THANKS FOR CHECKING OUT THE 2014 EDITION OF THE LADY PROJECT SUMMER GUIDE! Hey, Lady! We are so excited to launch our second annual Summer Guide! This guide is filled with fun gifts hand-picked by our members for your next wedding gift, Baby Shower or just because. In the pages, you’ll find our members’ favorite tips on how to make it the best summer in your city. What I love most about our Summer & Holidays Guides is that they are made by the members, for the members. Mihaela and Sarah did an amazing job working with other members to make this guide come to life. They set up photoshoots with make up artists, models and stylists, while other members wrote articles on their specialities. Lady Project is all about collaboration-- and this
guide is a wonderful example of what can happen when amazing ladies team up to make something awesome. Rhode Island kicks it up a notch in the summer time- from taking a day trip to Block Island to happy hours at The Hot Club and clam cakes and chowder at Iggy’s. We hope the tips in our guide help you explore our little state and make some new favorites this summer. Since last summer’s guide, Lady Project has expanded into two new cities- Boston and New Haven! We’re so excited to integrate our new chapters into our Summer Guide and showcase what’s happening in those amazing cities.
We have a fantastic summer planned here in Providencefrom day trips to Block Island and summer nights at Hot Club, Lady Project is busy planning events in Newport, a fun shopping event and more ways how we can showcase our amazing members. SHARED AGRICULTURE, SHARED COMMUNITY For
many years, I debated the merits of using a community supported agriculture program, or CSA, as my main source of produce. The organic produce offerings at our local chain supermarket were sparse, and I just wasn’t able to make it to a nearby farmers’ market often enough. Conversely, I had friends that would tell me that though their farm share was generally a good investment, they would regularly receive items they either didn’t know what to do with or didn’t like. Sometimes an entire week’s share might consist of a
bushel of a singular item, like lettuce, broccoli rabe, or parsnips— and who wants that? My farmer friend and her husband solved this problem for me when they started a unique CSA program from their farm in Middletown, RI — Garman Organic Farm, LLC. What won me over to their program was the flexibility. Each week we could select what items we wanted from an online form listing what produce would be available. This was a huge selling point for me. I’d get a bag full of farm fresh organic produce each week and I could select exactly what I’d receive if I wanted to! Each week, the participants in the CSA met in a central location to receive delivery of our share. The first week was especially exciting as we eagerly awaited our bags, chatting the whole time about what we were planning to do with our produce. Our fees included an insulated reusable zippered bag with an icepack to make sure everything stayed chilled and
fresh until we could get it home. It felt a little like Christmas when farmer Jim Garman arrived and handed us our bags heavy with the week’s bounty. We’d find that some weeks there would even be one of the Garmans’ favorite recipes included with our produce, which was particularly useful the week I decided to try the fava beans without ever having prepared them before! It’s awesome knowing not only that I’m supporting a local business and that my money is going directly to the farmer growing my food, but that I also get to become part of a community of people passionate about their food and where it’s coming from. The term “CSA” is so commonplace now that we tend to forget what the individual letters stand for. The Garmans definitely emphasized the community aspect of CSA with their program, and encouraged us all to share our experiences with the produce we got each week. They maintain a Facebook group

How did you two meet? What’s your background- career, where you grew up, school?
We first met in 2000 as freshmen at Montserrat College of
Art (Beverly, MA), Danielle transferred after her first year to Northeastern University to pursue her degree in Photography and Business and Ellen stayed on to complete her training in Graphic Design and Letterpress. We reconnected after graduation and bonded over our mutual love of parties, paper, and making things with our hands. How did you come up with your name, Champagne & Ink?
Champagne & Ink is the literal and figurative representation
of what our business is about. Champagne for the celebration and Ink is our dominant medium. Our business has two parts, styling and Letterpress and two owners, so we wanted a name that reflected that. What is your typical day on the job?
There is no typical day for us! Since we launched in January
2014 there have been so many moving parts to our business that it keeps us going in all sorts of directions. On any given day you can find us at our computers drafting press releases, filing sales tax reports, researching for an upcoming project or designing for the current ones. Sometimes we’re sprawled out on the floor or a table somewhere sketching or creating projects for ourselves or clients, or some days we’re outside scouting new locations or just getting inspired by what is happening in the community.
Who’s your ideal/dream client?
Our dream client is a hip, discerning couple with a vision;
people who give us their initial ideas and then give us the room to run with them. We love people who seek one of a kind items and appreciate that everything thing we do is done 100% exclusively for them. What do you love about working in RI?
We’re both transplants to Aquidneck Island, Danielle from
Boston and Ellen from NH, and we just love how much AQ has to offer, from organic farms, to gorgeous beaches, stately mansions, and small businesses opening up all over the place. For a small island the community is continually reinventing itself while staying true to what makes it a landmark and we feel that is what makes it such a special place to live and work.
What do you love about Lady Project?
We love the Lady Project for the excitement all the ladies
have for each other. It’s so easy for women to become competitive, or just downright nasty to each other in the work place, so it is truly amazing to have a professional outlet like the Lady Project where women can gather and toss around ideas and goals without feeling pressure or judgment from those around them. Likewise, no business runs in a bubble, you’re always going to need a lawyer, an accountant, a designer, a sales person, etc. etc. and with the Lady Project being open to all kinds of professions we have the opportunity to seek advice, hire or trade work, or just grab a drink with someone in a completely different profession. Where do you see your business in 5 years?
Our goal for our first year is to open a studio space where
we can stretch our wings, and have a cozy spot to meet clients and show them how we make the magic happen. In 5 years we hope to have our own line of ready to order paper suites: save the dates, invitations, thank you cards, note cards, etc. so that clients have a selection of pre-designed work to choose from.

To the Graduates, A Letter BY SHENAYE THOMAS
Dear Graduate, It’s the big day. You’re sitting in your seat, euphoria pulsing through your veins. You hear the slight echo of a speech being given. What are they saying anyway? You see the flash of a camera. You hear the faint screams of proud parents in the audience. You finally did it. After a long four years with nothing but blood, sweat, and tears (there were lots of those), you did it. You’re awakened out of your stupor as your row is told to stand. It’s your turn to cross the stage and make your final exit. You turn around to see selfies being taken, best friends hugging, and little kids asking if it’s over yet. You reach the front of the line. You hand the announcer your name card, making sure he pronounces it oh-so-perfectly. You hear the first syllables of your name as you cross the stage. You hear an uproar of cheers and screams behind you. It all feels so surreal. Is this really happening? You find your way back to your seat, not remembering how you got there. This is the most exciting day of your life. You’ve crossed the stage (without falling) and received your diploma. But why do you still feel those little butterflies? The worst is over right? Your mind begins to wander. What happens now? Should you go home? Take a few weeks off? Find a job? Move across the country? What about your career? You’re supposed to have it all figured out. “What are you doing after college?” You can hear all the questions buzzing around. What are you doing, you wonder. You haven’t really given it much thought. You were just hoping things would, you know, just happen.
But life isn’t like college. It’s a big, bad world full of rules and bills to pay. It’s a constant rat race against the debt collecting in your pocket. At least that what your parents make it seem like. But this is your big day. You’re not supposed to be worrying about these things. But you can’t help but flicker back to those thoughts about what you’re going to do next. You realize you have no idea what comes next. And you know what, that is 100 percent okay. I want to let you in on a little secret. No one really knows for sure what they’re going to do next. Plans change. Dreams change. People change. It’s not the destination that matters, its the process, the journey that gets you there. So what if you don’t work in some big, top notch company right out of college. Maybe you dream of teaching others how to snorkel through the Great Barrier Reef. Or you want to be the next Oprah and host talk shows that really help. Maybe you just want to paint, and sell your art in a small store. I guess my biggest advice to you—to us—is to not let the pressure of the world keep you from going on your journey. Don’t follow someone else’s journey just to seem more successful. As cheesy as it sounds, follow your dreams, that deep feeling you have within you. Walk across that stage knowing that whatever you do next, you’re gonna freakin’ love! And most of all, enjoy every single minute of it. To all of us graduates, congratulations. We did it! And to all of the future graduates, you’re next. It’s not about the destination, but the journey.

How did Batchbook get started? What was the vision at the beginning and what is the vision now? Batchbook started with a few geeky parents who decided to build a tech company that would help entrepreneurs (including ourselves) achieve work/life balance. The original vision was world domination. We’ve since refined it as enabling a world economy dominated by businesses that are passionate about life and work. We’ve seen Batchbook and Batchaus - any other names for Batchbook? How did they come about? The company is BatchBlue, the CRM product is Batchbook and the office is the BatchHaus. “Batch” is a tech term for creating efficiencies with scale. Blue is for the Ocean State and because we are water bugs. And once we got going on a batch naming roll, we just went with it. Next is the BatchYacht. What’s a typical Monday like at Batchbook? What about a Friday? Mondays are meeting days. We laugh and make to-do lists. Wednesdays are NO meeting days. We laugh and mark things off to-do lists. Fridays are fun days. We laugh and celebrate the things we got done. There is a lot of laughing. And eating and drinking. Some doing. :) Describe Batchbook’s personality. Any quirks? Silly characteristics? Our personality is very diverse. We have debates on the sinusoidal rhythm of our metrics and whether the new Dallas show is as good as the old. You can either find us at the vegan restaurants or out on the farm hunting deer. We walk, bike, kayak, motorcycle and drive the largest trucks known to man to work. We have babies a lot. Diverse as the group is, we share a love of life and learning from each other.
What makes RI the best home for Batchbook? RI is a marvelous place to live and work. It is a very creative community full of interesting people very quietly doing revolutionary things. It’s got the hustle and excitement of a big city, but with an “everybody knows your name” small town feeling. It’s a good place to be the big fish in a small pond, yet the small state in a big world. What’s something you’re looking to (A) change at Batchbook, (B) continue doing at Batchbook, and (C) would like to start doing at Batchbook? As we grow we are working to keep sharing some of our old traditions with the new folks, like our official office drink the Pimmtini from the founding conversation at the now defunct Nat Porter’s Inn in Warren. We also love to try new things, whether it is a new feature in our app or a visiting masseuse in the office. Our VP of Strategy works as hard on getting new food trucks to the office as she does on our business metrics. And she makes a heavenly granola. Money and scheduling no object: what would the Batchbook team do this weekend? Vacation? Fancy dinner? Movie night in the office? If money was no object, we would fly the entire team here, take the BatchYacht down to the BatchHaus Keys (our VP of Marketing’s house in Key West) and spend a week learning the science behind underwater wine aging while debating the superiority of Maine vs. Caribbean lobsters. What is your favorite part about being a PVD Lady Project member? The people, always the people. We have met some amazing and incredibly diverse women through the PVD Lady Project events. There is nothing more beneficial to the work we are doing than taking our heads out of it every once in a while to hear the inspirational things other people are doing. PVD Lady Project events are a wonderful mix of education and fun, which are two of our favorite things. In the short time we’ve been involved we’ve already made some great connections with really talented local women that we might not have met otherwise.

We spent a Saturday afternoon going from one spot to another on Westminster and trying the different eateries in that area (The Eddy's - Bodega Malase単a - Flan y Ajo - AS220 - Gracie's)... it was so much fun and there are new places now too. 48 Hour Film Project Providence Festival is a three night film festival in July. Every year, 50+ teams from all over Rhode Island compete in to make a film in just 48 hours.
