Dry Skin?

D ry skin is commonly presented as rough to touch, scaling, flaking or peeling. In severe cases, it can be itchy with possible cracking.

Potential causes of dry skin include low humidity, frequent bathing or showering in hot water, harsh soaps or detergents, overexposure to sun, certain skin conditions (atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne), and certain medical conditions. When treating dry skin, the goal is to restore the skin’s moisture barrier function to prevent further moisture loss. In most cases, dry skin can respond to lifestyles changes such as the following. • • • • • • • •

Avoiding long hot showers or baths. Avoiding harsh perfumed soaps. Rubbing skin vigorously when drying, pat drying after bathing. Using bath products after a bath. Skin hydration is increased if products are applied to damp skin. Increasing humidity indoors. Wearing gloves, scarves, face masks outdoors in cold or windy weather. Avoiding caffeine and spices, as well as alcohol that may cause dehydration when consumed regularly in large amounts. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day.

If a therapeutic moisturizer is required, talk to you PURE Pharmacy pharmacist for over-the-counter moisturizing treatments that contain emollients, humectants, occlusives, and bath oils. •

• •

Emollients fill in spaces between the cells in the upper skin to make the skin feel smoother and softer. Examples include almond oil, lanolin, mineral oil, vitamin A and E -Humectants draw water from lower skin layers and the environment into the upper skin. They also retain water that is already present. Examples are glycerin, lactic acid, propylene glycol, and urea. Occlusives block the surface of the upper skin to prevent water loss. Examples are beeswax, cocoa butter, paraffin, petrolatum, and soybean oil. Bath oils provide a layer of oil on the skin that prevents moisture evaporation. Examples are coal tar, colloidal oatmeal, and paraffin.

Fortunately, dry skin is usually mild and can be treated effectively with moisturizing products. However, if your dry skin leads to dermatitis which causes red, itchy red skin, your PURE pharmacist may recommend medicinal treatments that may be appropriate. More serious skin conditions may require a visit to your doctor or a dermatologist. Doug Ma, BSc (Pharm) Vancouver Regional Pharmacy Manager, Pure Robson

LOSING a little GAINING a lot A s you embark on the road to fine tuning your health you may find that people around you change and certain preferences that

once seemed ideal may no longer resonate with you. From friends to food, your preferences will evolve as you do. It is a fantastic way to gauge and reflect on the habits you are creating. If a friend is to leave your circle, it may appear to be a loss if you focus on how their absence negatively affects or hurts you. It may seem like losing a job is catastrophic and that timing could not be worse. However, we are able to gain so much when we notice new doors opening as old ones close. Now that time and space allow new, more suitable experiences in, we have the chance to explore new opportunities that we may have not thought possible before. When you explore you discover so much about yourself, what actually matters to you, and what you are capable of. For example, if you have a sedentary circle of friends and feel inspired to try hiking, your friends may not be eager to accompany you. As you continue to grow your passion for the outdoors and activity, a new need is brewing that cannot be fulfilled by friends that do not share the same enthusiasm. As is the natural beauty of life, you will find new friends that nurture your new habits. Using this understanding of how beneficial change can be, we can embrace challenges as new experiences. When trying to create new healthier habits, remember that your environment supports who you are. Try to find those with likeminded interests so that can bounce energy and ideas back and forth as you elevate towards your desired goal. Follow your interests and passion, you will find all the tools you need. Whatever lifestyle change you are trying to make, you will have to face a couple of fears along the way but your journey is worth it. Opening yourself up to the unknown just might be the best thing that ever happened to you! Gloria Elizabeth Holistic Nutritionist, Pure Kitsilano

E C Z What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, it is a chronic (usually allergic) skin irritation that is characterized by skin inflammation. What are the symptoms of Eczema?

Symptoms can include redness, swelling, oozing, crusting, scaling & itchiness of the skin. The itchy, flaking rash may appear on the inner surface of elbows and knees, the backs of the upper arm, wrists, cheeks, scalp or eyelids. Constant itching is one of the biggest complaints. Due to the scratching and rubbing of the skin, bacterial infections are also common. How do I get Eczema? It is often associated with a family history of allergies, such as hay fever, asthma or food allergies like Celiac disease, but environmental factors may also trigger an outbreak!

allergies), and avoid contact as much as possible (quite often wheat, milk, shellfish, peanuts, food preservatives) Try organic foods instead. Get your digestion going (with enough water and fibre); good skin is also often a reflection of a good digestive system. Improve your circulation by exercising; sluggish skin, bloating, and puffiness may improve by moving. Avoid excess sugar Eat good fats (Omega acids) Make sure you drink enough fluids; dry, irritated skin can also be caused by dehydration The use of body and laundry soap (esp. perfumed) can irritate your skin. Choose fragrance-free laundry soap and body care products instead Oatmeal baths can help with the inflammation and will also soothe the itching. Wear 100% cotton clothing (preferably organic) and use it for towels and bedding (remember we spend about 6-8h a day in our beds!) Give yourself a dry skin exfoliation!

Check for allergies (also food

The best time to dry skin exfoliate is the morning before you shower; brushing off the dead skin cells before starting the day off. It also improves the lymph and blood circulation and thus decreases puffiness. All you need is a soft, natural bristle brush. Start at your feet, brushing in small circles

towards your heart. Use only light pressure and avoid broken or very thin skin (face and inner thighs) or skin rashes. After your legs, move to your arms. Start brushing from your fingertips and again toward your heart. Brush your back from the top down toward your stomach, then start showering. Herbal Remedies that can help your skin heal from inflammation and help with dry skin

Omega-3 acids (evening primrose oil or fish oil) have excellent antiinflammatory properties. Milk thistle can help detoxify your body, thus stop inflammation. Oil of Oregano Oil of Oregano has excellent antibacterial and antiviral properties. Consuming 2-4 drops daily can help from the inside out, or applying the oil topically can help with surface irritations. Turmeric (also used as a spice) has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. Probiotics (Lactobacillus and Bifidus bacteria) help deal with your digestive tract and thus decrease inflammation inside your body. Zinc is an element that seems to be deficient in eczema patients Aloe when applied topically is soothing for itching, irritated skin. Sweet Almond Oil is a rich antiinflammatory oil for use on the outside. Witch Hazel helps sooth the itching and can help close small wounds. Homeopathic Remedies There are many different remedies available for eczema,

dry & irritated skin; a few are mentioned below:

Antimonium is great for people with thick, cracked skin. Usually, the itching gets worse from warmth and sun exposure. Arsenicum is used for people who are anxious, restless, very neat & orderly. Skin is usually dry, itches & burns intensely, and scratching makes it worse. Calc. Carb. is ideal for people with eczema & cracking skin that is worse in winter time. Calendula can be used for people with irritated skin that has tendency to get infected. Topical application is soothing and can ease inflammation and prevent infections. What’s in Your

One day, while lying in the bath with nothing in particular to do, I grabbed the bottle and started reading the label. “This bath will gently cleanse your skin, helping to leave it feeling soft and smooth.” Sounds good! I went on to read the ingredients; Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Sodium Chloride, Parfum, Glycol Stearate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Formaldehyde, Polyquaternium-7, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Sodium Hydroxide. Quite a cocktail of chemicals. And then my warning sensors went off. Below the ingredients was a boldly printed warning advising to “Avoid getting into eyes.” If this soap is so great for the skin, why should it be so harmful to the eyes? I thought I’d investigate. But it is not just in bubble bath that one finds chemicals harmful to the skin. They are also in toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream and cleansers. In trying to find products that do not contain these harmful chemicals I visited supermarkets, pharmacies, and health food stores. Surprisingly, almost all of them had a lot of chemicals in them. However, it

is possible to find alternatives; you just need to check the ingredients label carefully Your skin is part of your body’s largest organ - your skin is a living, breathing organ that is constantly renewing itself. You wouldn’t expose an organ like your heart to harsh chemicals, so why your skin? You probably didn’t even know that many of the skin care products you use every day have harsh chemicals that erode your skin. Are you aware that the cosmetics industry in North America is a big business with 50 billion in sales each year? Lots of them claim how good the products are at rejuvenating the skin by reducing wrinkles, lines and working anti-aging etc. But do you really know what the ingredients are in these products? Health Canada does maintain a “Cosmetic Hotlist” specifying ingredients that are not permitted in cosmetics or are subject to certain restrictions. But the list does not have the same authority as legislated regulations and several ingredients that are banned from use in cosmetics in Europe.

Bubble Bath?

Dibutyl phthalate, for example, are not on the hotlist. The US have laws where it is mandatory for companies to provide a label with ingredients, but only chemists understand their purpose and dermatologist their problems. It seems that a large percentage of the population is suffering adverse consequences when using products containing many harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients. Companies selling cosmetics and personal care products, hiding controversial or dangerous ingredients under the label of “trade secrets. Because of intense competition in the industry, if a company believes it uses an ingredient that is relatively new to the industry or make their products unique, it can petition the FDA (or in Canada, Health Canada) to prevent disclosure of that ingredient by granting trade secret status. It is that easy! This spells delight for the company and disaster for you! In North America literally thousands of people are suffering from adverse effects when using Bob Mehr, BSc (Pharm) CEO, Pure Integrative Pharmacy

cosmetic products and most people don’t associate burning sensations, reddening of the skin or pimples, rashes with a cosmetic product they are using. People simply discontinue using the product but seldom report it to the FDA or Health Canada. Many chemicals used in cosmetics never cause signs of toxicity on the skin, but contain potent systemic toxins. What can you do to protect yourself and your family? Read all labels and learn to decipher some of the chemical jargon. An explanation of many chemicals that are hazardous and dangerous your skin and health can be found online. Understanding the long-term effects of these chemicals and which products contain them is the first step in avoiding disastrous results for you and your loved ones. If nothing else, this information will make you a more informed consumer, one aware of the potential risks. Most importantly...it could save your life!
