GLOW

SKULLS

Ska-aficionados will be skanking for joy when rousing, influential Riverside, California ska-punk troupe, the Voodoo Glow Skulls take to the stage at Respectable Street Café in February. From what we hear, the Casillas Brothers, consisting of Frank (lead vocals,) Eddie (guitar,) and Jorge (bass,) are bringing along a three-horn section for this tour-- so we imagine the left-right fist punching on the dance floor will out of control. Together for a whooping sixteen years, The Skulls are one of ska’s preeminent bands; Sublime, No Doubt, and The Offspring owe their existence to the group’s boisterous revivalist sound. The Skulls dish out a ruckus mix of rock, punk, ska and hardcore, with a dash of Latin spice thrown in for seasoning (some of their songs are in Spanish,) that it has dubbed “California Street Music.” Its sound is engaging, propulsive and addictively celebratory, even for those who don’t dig ska much will find something they like about the Skulls sound. Catch them on Feb.18th at Respectable Street in West Palm Beach with Authority Zero, Skyfox and The Hard Richards. ~ Alex Rendon

SIX ISSUE PUREHONEY PARTY, INSPIRIT BENEFIT, FOUR AWESOME BANDS, TWO NEW + ONE GREAT ART SHOW A pair of Florida bands have undergone face-lifts with new names and new members, and both of them will play a well-stocked bill of hooky power-pop at Propaganda on Saturday, Feb. 25. Noah Kussack, of Orlando alternative act XOXO, returns with his new project The Passenger. It’s named after the famous Iggy Pop song, but the band’s sound, evidenced on the debut LP Here Today, Gone to Maui, hews closer to the melodic, streamlined pop-rock of the Get Up Kids and recent Green Day. The record’s slick, radiofriendly sound comes courtesy of Ed Rose, who has produced records for Appleseed Cast and the aforementioned Get Up Kids. “The mixes Ed did for these recordings inspired the whole band,” Kussack says. “This is the first recording I’ve ever been a part of that I could get behind 100 percent.” The Passenger will travel to Lake Worth to join North Atlantic Space Company. This is the new project from Chris Horgan and Steve Copeletti of local favorites Sweet Bronco, which has been on hiatus since bass player Jessica Glisson moved to Portland. North Atlantic Space Company has played only a few shows since its November debut at Fort Lauderdale’s Green Room, it doesn’t have any recordings at this time, and even the internet doesn’t know it exists (When you Google the band name, you’ll be prompted to search for “Atlantic Spice Company” instead, which I hear offers a delectable tarragon). Horgan says North Atlantic Space Company’s sound is more focused than Sweet Bronco on the perfect three-minute power-pop hit, conjuring memories of the Nuggets bands. John Ralston and The Dewars fill out this evening’s impressive lineup. Since 2000, Lake Worth-based nonprofit Inspirit has taken live music directly to people who can’t get out to experience it in Palm Beach County -- at places like rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes,Alzheimer’s day care centers, hospitals, children’s shelters, group homes, and mental health centers. Hundreds of musical acts, of all ages, sizes and musical genres, have since performed thousands of times -- at dozens of different local facilities -- for countless of the less fortunate area folks who range in age from 2 to 102. www.InspiritLive.org ~ John Thomason/Bill Meredith

THE SOUND OF FLORIDA DYING Continuing our ceaseless task highlighting Florida’s noteworthy record labels, we shift our attention slightly north this issue, up to the tourist trap town of Orlando, to spotlight Orlando- based label Florida’s Dying. Although Central Florida is best known for birthing the world’s most famous mouse, it’s actually a very musically fertile part of our state. Florida’s Dying founder Rich Evans was keen on that when he started the label in 2005 out of his girlfriend’s apartment. His intent was to gain Florida bands more notoriety, so with that in mind his first few releases were split singles-- featuring a Florida band on one side and a more recognizable national band on the other. Florida’s Dying’s first ever single was, naturally, from Evans own band, The Buttercups, with a French band he discovered on MySpace called The Creteens on the other. Evans quickly abandoned the split single concept however, because he says he found it to be “annoying.” Good thing he did, because Florida’s Dying has gone on to become a crucial hub for our state’s kindling fuzzy garage rock scene. Most notably Florida’s Dying was responsible for pressing Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys’ twisted surf rock debut LP No Seasons. Evans has also shown some love to Palm Beach bands as well. Last year he released unhinged psychedelic garage rock troupe Cop City Chill Pillars’ debut Held Hostage On Planet Chill. He calls CCCP “easily one of the best things going right now.” We tend to agree. VICE magazines Tony Rettman recently gave the band top spot on his “Anti-Music List Music List” writing-- “I hate to sound like a cliché machine (Too late! Am I right, people?), but no other record that came out of nowhere this year befuddled me as much as this’un. The band name, the cover, the sound… all the way down the line I felt mind fucked. It’s what the Shadow Ring would have sounded like in ‘97 if someone played Graham Lambkin a copy of Behind the Magnolia Curtain rather than the Extended Voices compilation on Odyssey. I’m sure you know exactly what I mean.“ Evans has since started two more labels. One called Total Punk which for now is a singles label that puts out two song singles with hand stamped covers. So far they have five releases (Midnite Snaxxx, Sleaze, Personal and the Pizzas, Outdoorsmen and Gary Wrong). He also started a Florida reissue label called Floridas Dead. The first release was a Roach Motel collection and next up is Broken Talent Look out for more eclectic Floridian bands to come out on Florida’s Dying this year. www.floridasdying.com ~ Alex Rendon

AGORABLES

SPREADS THE L O V E

As a tiny lad Agorables loved art, but dreamt of throwing blazing fastballs in the Majors. Well, one healthy dose of reality later he found himself at a local university eating loads of cheap delivery food and racking up plenty of student loans. After graduation he occupied his time with ant farming, people watching and an occasional pedicure or two, but even with all these wonderful things in his life he still seemed truly unfulfilled. With some closet “Art-ing” under his belt Agorables felt the world, or at least part of it, was ready for his creations. These creations range from shifty zombies, rude creatures, perverse monsters, to retro style watercolor tattoo flash. He dreams of someday doing killer handbills and cover art that make just a simple piece of paper worth saving, like the marvelous wonders of San Francisco’s “Family Dog” in the 60s. Agorables spreads the love of Art and the Strange on the web at agorables.com and Etsy.
