Ayrshire Digest

Director’s Column By Donna Mertz, Director at Large Good Day Mates! In January of this year, I had the opportunity to attend Australia’s International Dairy Week as a U.S. Ayrshire Breeders’ Association representative in the USLGE booth. For those who may not know, USLGE stands for the United States Livestock Genetics Export and is a government program that benefits many livestock breed associations. One of the tasks of the representative is to hand out promotional materials and pedigree information to participants and attendees throughout the activity. The thumb drives that we hand out carry our Blue Book information, Ayrshire Year Book and other promotional materials. I admit I was worried prior to attending this event. Would I know all the pertinent information that breeders would ask? Would I be able to be of benefit in promoting U.S. Ayrshire genetics internationally? My very first day there put my mind at ease. No matter where you travel, the language of the Ayrshire is a universal one. I had the opportunity to talk to World Ayrshire Federation President Greg Edmonds and Australia Ayrshire Federation President Mike Hentschke that first day. You know what? Whether you are at a show in the U.S. or anywhere in the world, it makes no difference as the same concerns of profitability, genetics, animal welfare and the public’s perception of farming are at the forefront of conversations. Walking through the barns is no different from our shows either. Breeders are excited to talk about their cattle and breeding as passionately as we are. As I spent another day in the ‘Land Down Under,’ I began to understand what USLGE and trips such as this one mean for the Average Joe or Average Jane Ayrshire Breeder. When I arrived, my mind set was…I don’t export embryos and have had one bull go into stud, so how does this program benefit me? Two days in, I realized that every breeder benefits! The more Ayrshire semen that is exported (demanded internationally) the more bulls that can and will be sampled in the U.S. which gives all breeders more choices and opportunities (greater supply of Ayrshire genetics to choose from). While on the trip, we learned that the Ayrshire breed has become the THIRD largest breed for World Wide Sires behind Holstein and Jersey in terms of export sales in 2016. During the Ayrshire show itself, the influence and power of U.S. Ayrshire genetics showed. The premier sire was Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette-ET, and he was also the sire of Rockvale Burdette Prim, the Intermediate, Senior and Grand Champion. Of the 92 Ayrshires exhibited, over one third were sired by U.S. bulls. It was also wonderful to observe history being made when, for the first time in IDW history, an Ayrshire was named Intermediate All-Breeds Supreme Champion. During the IDW Elite Ayrshire Sale, an animal of U.S. genetics topped the sale. Several years ago, Burdette embryos out of Stillmore BBBK Klassy, EX-94 2E, topped this same sale. A Riggins granddaughter from Klassy topped this year’s sale. Even after being on the ABA Board for several years and hearing the reports on USLGE, it all became very “real” to me on this trip. I cannot advocate enough for this important program because it truly does benefit ALL breeders.

Hi-View Farms

ith three kids, an 80-cow dairy, and a commitment to community involvement, Brian and Kristi Dinderman of Hi-Ayr-View Farm are used to being pulled in many directions. However, with family teamwork and the utilization of the programs offered to them by breed associations, the Dindermans have maintained a high standard of success with their operation, located in Orangeville, Illinois. The Dindermans’ milking herd consists of about 30 Ayrshires, 30 Holsteins and 11 Guernseys. An impressive 12 of those Ayrshires are scored Excellent, with an Ayrshire RHA of 20,153M 3.9% 798F 3.2% 636P. Like many mixed-breed herds, the current farm was started as a blend of Brian’s parents’ Guernsey herd, and Kristi’s parents’ Ayrshire and Holstein herd. Kristi cites the hardiness, calving ease, hoof health, reproduction efficiency and milk quality as the many reasons Ayrshires have earned their place in their barn. The cows are kept between a tie stall and free stall barn, and are on pasture as much as possible. They are fed grain and hay in the barn, and silage and haylage is fed outside. Their SCC on all breeds was 68,000 in 2016. Currently, the only “employees” on the farm are Brian and Kristi and their three

children, Alaina, 10, and twins Amery and Aidan, 8. The Dindermans are strong believers in the REWARDS program offered by the US Ayrshire Association. “It is a great program that bundles many programs that we utilize for a greatly discounted price,” said Kristi. “We find the value in classification cost, free registrations under four months and reduced transfer costs.” The reduced transfer fee is an especially attractive facet of the program due to the numerous animals the Dindermans market every year. In addition to the Ayrshire REWARDS program, they utilize the TPE program offered by the American Guernsey Association, as well as milk testing, routine classification, showing and consigning to sales. While many breeders may consider these “extra” or unnecessary to the operation of their herd, the Dindermans consider them essential to achieving their goals. “We like to have nicepedigreed animals and these programs help us to achieve that,” said Brian. The Dindermans also appreciate that these programs help them to “grade” their animals and aid them in their marketing. Lactation information, appraisal scores and show placings help to fill out a pedigree and make an animal more attractive to a potential buyer.

Marketing cattle is especially important to Hi-Ayr-View Farm. The Dindermans have sold many animals that have gone on to do well for their new owners, which in turn makes their future consignments all the more valuable. One notable success story from 2016 was HiAyr-View Duckys Dream VG-87, who was purchased by the Kruse family from the Iowa Extravaganza spring sale last year. Dream went on to be Reserve Junior All-American and Nominated All-American Junior ThreeYear-Old for the Kruse family. In addition to the Iowa sale, the Dindermans are again planning to consign to the Wisconsin Ayrshire Sale and the National Ayrshire Convention Sale in 2017. In 2016, they consigned animals to sales in Iowa, Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin and to the National Convention for a total of nine head. They also sell privately; and have sold Guernseys successfully as well, including the Junior Champion of the 2016 Kentucky National Show and Sale. It’s no wonder the Dindermans are successful at marketing their animals, as they have a great pool of genetics to choose from. One of their favorites, Hi-Ayr-View Burdette Andie EX-93 is currently on their flush program. Andie was the Grand Champion of the Southern National the first year the Dindermans attended, 2015. Another favorite

6

is Hi-Ayr-View Prime Marroon 5-ET EX-91, who won the World Dairy Expo International Futurity and was Nominated All-American in 2016. The bloodlines run deep, as Andie is out of an EX-92 Harmony and Marroon 5 comes from an EX-91 Kelly. The Dindermans’ show and sale ring success owes a lot to a tried-and-true breeding program. “We look for bulls that have proven pedigrees and good cow families,” said Kristi. “With both breeds we want a cow that can compete in the show ring but also is profitable in production.” Bulls currently in use are Reagan, Roush, Distinction, Alaska, Gentleman, Burdette, Predator and Bravo (Potter x Dreamer x Masterpiece), a bull they recently collected themselves. Besides staying very involved in programs and events, the Dindermans participate in numerous roles in other organizations. Kristi is the Vice President of the Illinois Ayrshire Association and the National Youth Committee, is on the Illinois Milk Promotion Board and is a delegate for Midwest Dairy. Brian is a board member for the American Guernsey Association and the county Holstein board, and a director of the Illinois Guernsey Association. Brian and Kristi also both teach a class at Highland Community College; Brian teaches the AI course and Kristi teaches Dairy Evaluation and coaches the judging team, who took home first place in Ayrshires at Louisville under her expertise. When asked about balancing their busy lives, Kristi says, “It is difficult! We try to make weekends family time.” She also recommends having a good support group of family and friends. This was especially crucial in December 2008, when the twins were born, and the Dindermans spent six months

March/April 2017

travelling back and forth to the NICU an hour away. Kristi’s mom began milking full time and siblings and friends stepped in to ensure chores were done and Brian and Kristi could spend ample time with their newborns. Brian and Kristi purchased the farm outright from Kristi’s parents in 2007, after about a year of 50% partnership. “We couldn’t have asked for the transition to go any better,” says Kristi. Although her parents had moved into town and were no longer financially involved, they still routinely helped out around the farm, especially through the birth of the twins in 2008. Kristi has some good

advice for making a family transition as smooth as theirs: “Bring in a financial planner or someone similar that can help come up with a plan that both parties agree to. Then, set a timeline and stick to it.” An outside mediator can prevent the process from becoming too emotional or personal, Brian advises. “It takes respect and open minds from both sides for the plan to go well.” Although they currently don’t have any long-term succession plans in place, the Cont. on pg. 13

Lloyd Machin

Newton, IA Director Candidate – District 3 Lloyd Machin grew up on a dairy farm where his family had Holstein cows until he purchased his first Ayrshire from Lawrence VanderWerff in 1963 for a 4-H project. He later purchased March/April 2017

nine more heifers from Lawrence. Upon high school graduation, he served in the Army for two years then returned home and started his own herd. Lloyd and Dianna were married in 1969, and they rented a small farm south of Kellogg. They purchased their current farm in 1973. They have two sons, Eric and Ed, and a daughter Elaina, who passed away seven years ago. Eric and his wife, Chris, have three children, Tyler, age 11, and twins, Andrew and Alyssa, age 8. Eric lives on the farm and helps with the daily operations and the building of their new parlor. Ed and his wife, Meggan, live a few miles south of Newton and have two children, Ethan, age 13, and Ella, age 11, who come on weekends to help take care of the cows and to help on the new parlor. All the grandkids are very interested in 4-H and are getting involved with the record keeping part of the dairy. Machin has never owned a cow of another breed, and all the cows are registered. The herd consists of 110 cows and about the same

number of heifers. All bull calves are kept until they are off milk then sent to a feed lot in northeast Iowa. The farm is all crop ground without pasture, so the cattle are in dry lots, and everything is fed to the cows and heifers. Lloyd has been a lifetime member of the ABA since 1969. He has served on the ABA Board of Directors for the past three years and served on the Breed Improvement Committee. He is a member of the Iowa State Ayrshire Club. He was president of Jasper County DHIA for six years back when there were over 100 dairies in the county (now there are only two herds). Registrations and transfers are the backbone of the ABA. In today’s dairy climate, what can we do to increase the value of the registration to make Registered Ayrshires a value-added commodity? Creek - Registrations are the reason for our Association. We are charged with recording Cont. on pg. 12

11

Cand. cont. from pg. 11

the parentage of our animals and preserving the integrity of the breed. Our registration papers are the evidence of our efforts. We need breeders to value the registrations and appreciate the necessity to record changes in ownership to keep our records complete and accurate. There used to be a significant difference in the value of an animal that had a registration certificate vs one that did not. Unfortunately, that difference has diminished. The Association needs to renew our efforts to make dairymen and breeders appreciate the value of being able to track the generations of animals that have established our breed and understand the increased value that documentation represents. Fenton - Registration papers are a road map of the breed – where we have been and where we are going. Using ABA programs can and will add value to Registered Ayrshires. Keeping registrations and transfers updated is a major step in breeding superior Ayrshire cows for the future. Gillette – The health traits of the Ayrshire cow fit well into the herd profile. My cows are in a large free-stall herd, go through the parlor every day, and are almost never sick. Hazeltine - We can help farmers and breeders understand that registrations pay for themselves, by way of greater dollar sales through auctions and/or private treaty sales . Machin - Registrations and transfers are the main source of income for ABA. To increase each, we must be able to deliver a cow that people can see that without papers is not worth nearly as much money. As we know, there have been a lot of Ayrshires sold in the last 12 months where the registration paper did not go with the cows. That is sad, as these cows will be lost to the breed forever. It is a fact of life in today’s world. This is why we must prove that the Ayrshire cow is worth more with the registration certificate and transfer than without. Valentine - In today’s market, all breeds, large or small, are struggling with owners needing to cut costs where they are able. I believe it is important to show the value that these cattle already carry over non-registered cattle. We need to remind breeders of the many avenues to market them from calf sales, national sales and privately to youth. I believe that dairy farmers are in this for the love of the cow as much as the love of the business. Being able to track those pedigrees and trace the lineage is just as valuable in this age, where the number of farms is in decline, as is the marketability of groups and individuals. What can we do as an Association to

encourage Ayrshire breeders to utilize the tools available to them to improve the genetic and production potential of our breed? Creek - Encouraging the use of all tools available to breeders is an ongoing task. There have been discussions and articles about all of the tools available to us, and we need to continue to make note of these opportunities. At the winter board and committee meetings, an informative program was presented that showed many of the web pages and links that breeders can use to find information on both males and females from most of the countries around the world. There are links on the Ayrshire website that can lead you to many hours of information. Just one click will lead you to comparisons that you may not have expected were available to you. We also need to constantly publicize and promote the changes and improvements that the board and committees add to our existing programs so our members are aware of these changes. If time permits in convention or even state meeting schedules, it might be fun for everyone to practice some internet searches to see all of the data that is there for your use. Fenton - Using the Ayrshire Blue Book is an excellent tool for breeders. It gives production and type summaries for bulls, cows and heifers. Gillette - There are many tools to improve production. We have more AI sires, sexed semen, genomics, and feeding and TMRs have improved greatly in the last few years. This is a subject I’m very interested in. I have written two “Director Remarks” columns in the July/August, 2016 and March/April, 2015 issues of the Ayrshire Digest on this topic. Hazeltine - We have many tools available for use. By registering and classifying (especially second lactation cows) we are able to use that data to improve the Ayrshire breed. In addition, by using genomic data it raises the bar a bit and speeds up the process for young sire usage. Improved production, fat, and protein will start to get outside breeders to take a second look at the Ayrshire breed. Machin - When it comes to the tools for breed improvement, the two at the top of the list are production testing and classification. In order to increase milk production, we must use production testing in order to select “the best of the best” in young sires. Type is a must to keep the cows alive and well in order to produce milk for more than one or two years. This is where classification is needed in order to find the sires that have the ability to pass on their genes. Valentine - I am very excited about a study that West Virginia University is putting

together. They are coming up with some great numbers on the efficiency of Ayrshires. They are using data they have collected as well as data from breeders. It is sometimes hard to see the rewards that the tools we have available can offer. I think that being as transparent as possible and teaching breeders about the tools that are available to them can help. Anything from a webinar, encouraging states to have a speaker at conventions or annual meetings, a bi-weekly email or social media post explaining or encouraging could go a long way toward filling in the gaps. What ideas do you have to encourage youth and young breeders to expand the Ayrshire breed? Creek - We always need to support and promote our youth, as we all know they are the future. We need to be pleasant, encouraging and supportive when a young person approaches us with questions, comments and concerns about Ayrshires, our Association and opportunities. Lease calves, support 4-H and FFA project programs and judging programs. We host judging workshops yearly and we feel it has been a very positive opportunity to show many young people, that have never encountered Ayrshires, the great qualities of our breed. We have been working with a college intern programs for seven years. It is a wonderful experience for us and the student, and it is also a fantastic way to expose someone who has never worked with an Ayrshire. One non-Ayrshire student is now an Ayrshire breeder. Do not take for granted any young person’s interest and passion as you never know what may develop. Fenton – Ayrshire youth and young breeders have many opportunities through the youth programs offered by the ABA. I would encourage youth to check the ABA website or contact the ABA office for details about these programs. Ayrshires offer many qualities for you in the show ring, in the milk bucket and in the bank where you can see the difference Ayrshires can make for you. Gillette – I think the youth program is growing with many showing at our shows. I have donated calves to several youth. As Chairman of the Promotion Committee, I’m working on two promotional materials to grow the breed. Another project to expand the breed is working with West Virginia University. Several members have donated two animals to WVU to expand their herd. I have been working with Ben Walsh of the University to improve their Ayrshire herd. The University has received Ayrshire Foundation grant money

to work on a research project to study feed efficiency in Holsteins versus Ayrshires. If this project proves that the Ayrshire cow is more efficient, this would be powerful information to promote the breed. Hazeltine – First, we as a dairy industry have to find and help young people who want to dedicate their lives to dairy. With that being said, if we as breeders can follow up with buyers from private treaty or auction sales. Developing new friendships will go a long way in helping establish a love for the Ayrshire breed. Machin - As we know young people are the future, and without them it will all come to an end. In this day and age, it is difficult, as we have seen all ends of agriculture have been tough. To get more youth involved with dairy and the breed, we must prove that good money can be made with the Ayrshire cow. We, as the older generations, are ones who must deliver the cow in order to have them interested. Valentine – In the last few years, I have seen an increase in the amount of Ayrshire owners maybe not the number of cattle, but the number of people that own one or two. I optimistically hope that as they see the wonderful qualities of our cattle, the quantity will increase. I think that the fact that components are at their most

March/April 2017

important right now will also help. Dairymen and women of today have to be dedicated to success, and very business minded to succeed. If we can get the hard numbers in front of them on efficiency, components, longevity and hardiness, I believe we have a big future. As for the youth, we all know that the way things were done in the past is not the way these kids are doing it. Being open minded and forward thinking in regards to what will motivate Ayrshire youth is going to be necessary to keep them engaged. Social media and technology are our keys to getting them excited about our contests and history. I was surprised at the meetings this past month by the amount of current youth registering animals. The difference in that number and the number that are actively participating is a large one. I hope that with continued adult support and more state interaction we can encourage more activity from our young members. I would like to thank you for your support. As always, please contact any of your directors with questions or concerns as we are here to make this association work for everyone.

Dindermans cont. from pg. 7

Dindermans will continue to utilize breed programs to enhance the quality of their herd. In addition, they are researching potential changes to increase cow comfort and become more labor efficient. When asked how they would encourage young producers to participate in breed programs and events, the Dindermans answered honestly that it depends on the goals and type of operation one has. However, “we feel the REWARDS program will benefit all producers, whether you are production or type oriented.” The passion for the breed is also a driving force at Hi-Ayr-View. “We have found that [programs have] been beneficial, from putting animals in sales and shows, not only to benefit and promote our herd, but also to promote the breed.” Thanks to a great work ethic, family teamwork, community involvement and a commitment to improvement, the Hi View prefix continues to cast a shining light on the Ayrshire cow.

I’m planning to flush one of my cows and would like to use a couple different sires. Can I use semen from two different bulls in the same flush? It is possible to flush a cow or use IVF with semen from two different bulls; however before you do it, you should contact the ABA office to have the combination checked to be sure that it will be possible to determine the sire of the offspring. The DNA profile for

Ask the ABA

the donor dam will need to be checked by the lab with the profiles for the prospective sires to verify that a sire verification can be made. This checking takes a few days, so don’t wait until the day before you are going to breed the donor dam. For example, if a cow was bred with semen from Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette-ET and one of his sons such 7 Oaks Burdette Alaska, the DNA profiles might be very similar making sire qualification very

difficult. The parents do not have to be related for there to be profiles that make qualification of the parentage a problem. Preplanning is the best method to ensure parentage verification. Making sure that the dam has been tested and then having the sire combination checked will prevent problems in registering the offspring.

A Note of Thanks: A huge thank you to the US Ayrshire Breeders’ Association and breeders for the invitation to judge your Southern National Show. It was a great honor, and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Credit must go to the breeders for displaying a wonderful line-up and to the show committee for a very well run show. The classes had outstanding quality and depth throughout, which made my task very enjoyable. As a judge, it’s great to have so much quality to work with. At the end of the day, all championship line-ups had what I was looking for: quality bone and refinement with power, strength with good locomotion, and udders in the milk classes that are well attached and full of milk. All of the animals I had to work with had this, and could simply win anywhere around the globe. When you see this, you know that the Ayrshire breed is on the move in the US. Well done to all the exhibitors! For those who traveled long distances, thanks for the effort to make the show very memorable for me. It was good to catch up with a few faces I had met in the past and to meet some new people. Unfortunately it was home time for all after judging. Lorraine and I were treated so well after the show, and we are forever grateful to Becky, Lynn and Neal for their wonderful hospitality. Riding a Tennessee Walking Horse and going the Grand Ole Opry was amazing, and they are life-long memories. Thank you once again, and I hope to come back one day to judge at another show. Let’s hope the milk prices increase further so life on the farm can be easier worldwide. ~ Sincerely, Selwyn Donald, New Zealand
