SPECIAL LECTURES

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 “HUMAN’S BEST FRIEND: THE RECIPROCAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMAN AND CANINE HEALTH” Drs. Libby Richards and Niwako Ogata It is known that pet dogs and their owners can reciprocally impact the health of one-another. It is thought that perceptions of pet attachment are related to owner health outcomes. In addition, increased physical activity, such as dog walking, can improve the physical and mental health of both dogs and their owners. This presentation will discuss dog walking research to date including human and canine impacts. Stewart Center, Eliza Fowler Hall | 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. (lecture), 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. (light reception in Robert L. Ringel Gallery) | 1 CE | Open to the public

Wellness Keynote |

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 “WORK LIFE LEADERSHIP: MANAGING SELF AND OTHERS”

Dr. Ellen Kossek Employee well-being and work-life issues matter for you as a leader. Leaders face three main work-life challenges: managing self, managing others, and managing organizations. You will learn about flexstyles, the different ways of managing work-life boundaries in a 24-7 digital age, and work-life supportive supervisor behaviors and why they matter. Perceptions of leaders’ work-life actions and behaviors are critical to create a culture of work-life support and well-being, which can improve productivity. PMU North Ballroom | 12:00 - 12:50 p.m. | 1 CE | Lunch available for purchase

Diversity Keynote |

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 “WHAT IS DIVERSITY… IN VETERINARY MEDICINE?” Dr. Jenifer Chatfield While many have focused on diversity and cultural issues in veterinary medicine as these concepts relate to client interactions and communication, few have addressed how these concepts impact effective communication and engagement between veterinarians themselves. Much has been made recently of the perceived lack of diversity within the veterinary profession, but these arguments tend to focus on a narrow definition of diversity limited largely to gender, ethnicity, and race. However, it is important to look further in order to remove some inherent impediments to effective medical collaboration and communication to enhance veterinary care. Through examination of some simple principles of veterinary medicine and the different medical approaches, one can raise awareness of diverse medical thought and leverage diverse experience and medical style to produce a more sophisticated ability to communicate with veterinary medical peers. PMU North Ballroom | 12:00 - 12:50 p.m. | 1 CE | Lunch available for purchase

Dr. Jack & Naomi Stockton Lecture |

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 “THE ROLE AND MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF MILITARY WORKING DOGS IN COMBAT”

Dr. Jim Giles Military working dogs (MWDs) are utilized in substantial numbers in current military operations and play a vital role in both protecting human lives and supporting miltary objectives. MWDs may incur severe injuries in performing their duty. Providing advanced medical and surgical care for MWDs in an austere environment is challenging and requires creating a “One Health Approach,” with substantial collaboration across veterinary and human echelons of medical care. Stewart Center, Loeb Playhouse | 4:30 - 5:20 p.m. | 1 CE PRELIMINARY PROGRAM | 5
