ability Savings Grant for low- and middle-class families from $3,500 to $4,000. This means that these families will now receive a grant of $4 for every $1 dollar contributed on the first $500 they contribute to their Registered Disability Savings Plans each year. This initiative is expected to cost the federal government $35 million per year.
Canadians have opened more than 100,000 Registered Disability Savings Plans since 2008. And, through the Canada Disability Savings Grant and the Canada Disability Savings Bond programs, the Harper Government has added more than $1 billion to their savings.
The Harper Government established Registered Disability Savings Plans in 2008, thanks to the vision of the late Jim Flaherty. These plans allow parents and the families of children with disabilities, and those children themselves as they grow up, to set aside money for the future in an account where it can grow with them, tax-free, until it’s needed.
“ Registered Disability Savings Plans help those who need financial security the most to generate significant savings,” said Mr. Harper. “And I believe that people with disabilities and their families know best how to use those savings to secure their futures.”
A re-elected Harper Government will also continue to work with the provinces and Canada’s financial institutions to improve the administration of the RDSP program, and to expand the range of investment options for RDSP holders.

Kelonwa Sikh Temple Car Show elowna Sikh Temple hosted its first annual car show on Saturday August 29, 2015. The cloudy and rainy weather did not stop participants from coming and showing off their incredible vehicles. One unique aspect of the show was that the participants did pay an entry

fee. Instead, they were asked to make a donation to the Food Bank. The cars were categorized into muscle, exotic, euro and imports and then judged by spectators. First place was Mason Kowbel and his 1993 BMW 318i. Second place was Jason Sekhon and 1987 Buick Grand National; completely
original, even the tires. The car only has 5000 kilometers. Third place was Ryan Upsdell Witherly and his highly modified 1995 Mazda Miata; Turbo Charged, nothing on this car is stock. Everyone’s Choice Car was a 2014 Mclaren P1 brought in by Matt August of August Motorsports Kelowna. This car was the show stopper, one of only four in all of Canada. This whole event would not have been possible without the organizers; Paramjit Patara, Param Lot, Surej Dhillon, Ricky Dhillon, and Garth Hanna. Other members of the community volunteered their time preparing warm tea and other refreshments for spectators and participants throughout the day. These men put in countless hours of planning for this event to happen and they are already excited to plan for a event next year. PAGE 7

urneet Dhaliwal had a breakout performance on behalf of the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team on Wednesday evening, powering the Cascades to a 2-1 exhibition victory over Simon Fraser University. Dhaliwal, a rookie forward out of Surrey, B.C., scored in the 25th and 54th minutes to stake the CIS No. 4-ranked hosts to a 2-0 lead at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Their NCAA Div. II foes cut the deficit in half on a Sophie D’Souza goal in the late going, but UFV hung on for the win.
“We saw today what a special attacking player she is,” Cascades head coach Rob Giesbrecht said of Dhaliwal. “It’s hard to put into words what she brings in the

She’s a very cunning player – she’s very difficult to mark, and she finds little pockets of space to be dangerous.” The Cascades opened the game with a great scoring chance, but Clan keeper Priya Sandhu came charging out and narrowly beat UFV’s Danica Kump to a through ball. At the other end of the pitch, SFU had a couple of great looks on a goalmouth scramble following a free kick, but saw one shot glance off the crossbar and another cleared off the line by Cascades defender Dayle Jeras. Dhaliwal notched her first goal as a Cascade off a Tristan Corneil corner, soaring to head the ball home. New centre opens for young families in Abbotsford

new resource has opened for parents of young children in Abbotsford. The Abbotsford Early Years Centre, located in the Sweeney Neighbourhood Centre adjacent to Abbotsford Senior Secondary, is a one-stop location for parents to find out information about learning, health and family services, including: childcare, parenting, child development, referrals for social supports, special needs services, early intervention therapies, and public health services. The new centre – one of 26 in BC – is coordinated through the Abbotsford Early Childhood Committee Partner’s Table (‘AECCPT’), working with the Abbotsford School District.

Garry Fehr named Director of new Agriculture Centre of Excellence at UFV By: Anne Russell
Dr. Garry Fehr has been named Director of the Agriculture Centre of Excellence (ACE) at the University of the Fraser Valley. Fehr is a faculty member of the Geography and the Environment department and will work with internal and external advisory committees while reporting to Dr. Adrienne Chan, Associate Vice President of Research, Engagement, and Graduate Studies. This is a three-year appointment in a newly established role. “Garry will be working with stakeholders to develop opportunities in the agriculture sector. We must think about agriculture in the broadest sense, beyond crops and livestock,” said Chan. “The stakeholders and partners will include municipal governments, industry, provincial and federal government agencies and departments, and Aboriginal organizations. We are very committed to linking our activities and plans in the area of agricultural education, programming, and research to the priorities and needs of our communities and partners. Garry has the relevant experience in community outreach through his private sector experience and his time as a faculty member at UFV. We are very pleased to have him in this role” UFV has been providing agricultural education programs for more than 40 years in the disciplines of horticulture, livestock, and integrated pest management. The new Agriculture Centre of Excellence has an expanded mandate of promoting and championing agricultural innovation in the areas of education, career development, research, and technology. The ACE will be a hub for agriculture in British Columbia by bringing together and sharing expertise from the university, the agricultural industry, and industry stakeholders. This multi-disciplinary approach will encourage participation in research and program development from a number of disciplines and academic departments, including agriculture, biology, business,
trades, geography, health, and social sciences. There are five broad areas of focus for the Agriculture Centre of Excellence: agribusiness and technology; food ingredients and value-added foods; sustainable production practices; skilled labour development and industry change; and rural entrepreneurship and agritourism. The centre will also work with the UFV Continuing Education department to facilitate the development of programming. Agriculture and the Environment has been identified as an area for program growth in the UFV Strategic Enrolment Management plan. Garry Fehr headshotFehr is looking forward to his new role and the opportunity for outreach it will provide. “This is a very exciting opportunity to shape the new Agriculture Centre of Excellence,” said Fehr. “As an interdisciplinary entity, the centre will provide UFV with excellent opportunities to engage students in applied research in a variety of areas. Some will be ‘big picture’ research projects about the future of agriculture and others will focus on the micro-details.” Fehr came to his academic career as a mature student, after having worked for 19 years in the construction and primary resources services sector throughout British Columbia. During this time, he also provided leadership for several humanitarian aid projects in Latin America and India. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Geography at Thompson Rivers University in 2003 and his PhD at the University of Guelph in 2008. He joined the Geography and the Environment department at UFV in 2007. The provincial government provided funding to help complete new Agriculture education facilities at the UFV Chilliwack campus at the Canada Education Park in 2013. At that time, it directed UFV to create an Agriculture Centre of Excellence. The new greenhouses and barn were officially opened by BC Premier Christy Clark in 2014. An internal steering committee was struck to develop a mandate for the new ACE. Fehr’s appointment as ACE director is the latest stage in the process of developing the centre. Diploma and certificate programs offered by the Agriculture department at UFV will continue to report to Dean of Applied and Technical Studies, John English. UFV also offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Agriculture Management, and there is a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in development.

Brief Introduction of “Ravi Kalra” Ravi Kalra is the one of the few individuals who has devoted his life for the welfare of the less privileged people and to protect our plant-mother Earth. Ravi Kalra was born and brought up in Delhi in a middle class family. He had completed his studies from the University of Delhi. His father retired as a Delhi Police Inspector. His father’s tough commando and soldier skills inspired Ravi Kalra to achieve the prestigious level 4th Dan black belt in Taekwondo Martial Arts in year 1987. Being an International Master Instructor and the President of Indian Amateur Taekwondo Federation, he has trained soldiers posted in several battalions. His activities had made him travel to 43 different countries to date. Ravi Kalra is a well-known Karma Yogi, social activist and environmentalist. In year 2008, he founded an NGO by the name of “The Earth Saviours Foundation” to look after poor, mentally disabled, wounded, deprived, HIV/AIDS patients, abandoned senior citizens and less privileged people. He offers them free shelter, food, medicine, and daily amenities. His NGO is registered under 80G Income Tax Exemption Act and is recognized by Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. Under the banner of his NGO, he runs an old age home, rehabilitation school for poor children, Nari Niketan to look after deprived females and a Rescue centre to look after mentally disabled people. He also has a Gaushala to look after stray cows. He is also known as the “No Honking Man of India.” He is the first one to trigger the never-ending “Do Not Honk” battle to educate drivers not to honk unnecessarily to control noise pollution.

He is a world record holder for wiping out “Horn Please” sign from over one lakh commercial vehicles. He is battling to save forests in India by filing PIL (Public Interest Litigation) in the Supreme Court of India for saving the forest and its habitats. Ravi Kaltra is also a proud Rotarian. Presently he is serving as the PresidentRotary club of Delhi Ridge. In the year 2012 Ravi Kalra was awarded the “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Prestigious Award” for excellence in selfless humanitarian service. By the grace of God, Ravi Kalra had holy baths in the three most gracious Maha Kumbh of the century. He had his first Maha Kumbh bath in the year 1998 at Haridwar, the second holy bath at Maha Kumbh in the year 2002 in Allahabad, and the third Maha Kumbh bath in the year 2012, also in Allahabad. Ravi Kalra has become one of the few spiritual non-priest Indians. So far he has cremated more than 4980 unidentified and unclaimed dead bodies at the electric cremation center for the divine souls to rest in peace in heaven. These are people who die during road/train accidents, found floating in Yamuna River, are half eaten by animals at ridges and drains, or have died in hospitals and road sites. These unidentified people were brought by the Police authorities at the cremation centre where Ravi Kalra offers his helping hand to perform their cremation with prayers and dignity. Ravi Kalra feeds almost 300 poor people every day. He has also pledged to donate his eyes, kidneys, heart valves, and other useful organs for people in need. He has pledged to donate his body for medical research. New provincial fund to help Syrian refugee settlement Recognizing the severity of the global humanitarian crisis in Syria, the Government of British Columbia is creating a $1-million readiness fund for Syrian refugees settling in B.C. The fund is a one-time investment intended to complement existing provincial and federal support services for refugees. The Province will work with settlement agencies, community groups and private sponsors to make sure these funds are used to achieve the best outcomes for these refugees. Specifically the funds will be used for: Counselling – trauma counselling through a range of psycho-social supports. “Groups of Five” private sponsorship supports – A “Group of Five” is made up of private citizens who come together to sponsor a refugee. These funds will assist these private sponsors to help navigate the refugee-sponsorship process. Community-level supports – help for local governments that will be settling Syrian refugees so there will be a welcoming community for these newcomers. Foreign Credential Recognition – many Syrians will arrive in Canada with work experience and credentials from their home country. Funds will be available for B.C.-based professional associations to quickly and fairly review and approve their foreign credentials so they can start working in B.C. Employer supports - funds to help businesses and existing immigrant settlement organizations employ, train and mentor Syrian refugees. These funds will also provide matching funds to employers who train and commit to hire a Syrian refugee.
