Halloween (or maybe you call it All Hallows Eve, All Saints’ Day, All Souls’ Day, Hallowed End, Samhain, All Hallowtide, or even Hop-Tu-Naa) . What comes to mind when you think of the night of October 31? Gruesome urban legends? The horror film that still sends chills down your spine if someone just mentions the title? Co-eds dressed up as naughty nurses? Spells and curses? Werewolves? The witches that are said to haunt Salem? Or do you go old-school nostalgic and carve pumpkins and watch “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown?” However you celebrate on Halloween (or even throughout the whole month of October, for those of you who REALLY get into it), there’s no denying that it’s one of the “holidays” that offers the most potential for everything from revelry to terror. And we’re giving you a little taste of it all... 8 THEPULSEMAG.COM | OCT. 2011

Scary Legends By Jennifer Russo

“It was a dark and stormy night…” We’ve all heard it, whether it be huddled around the campfire in the middle of the woods as a boy/girl scout or at a sleepover with someone shining a flashlight under his chin for extra spook-value. Regardless of where or when it was, we all know about the poor sap who lost his hand in an accident and now has an unsightly hook in its place. We also know that he uses said hook to maul innocent teenagers making out in cars in the middle of the night…I mean, what else would he do with it? There are legends that have been passed down throughout time ~ like the 1950s cliché legend of the Hookman, or dolls that murder homeowners in the night, or the headless horseman riding around Sleepy Hollow lopping people’s heads off ~ capable of making your arm-hair stand on end and giving you a chill that resonates down your spine and makes even the most sensible of us a little wary of the dark. Here’s just a sampling of some of the tall tales that we’re almost sure are completely made up… One legend involves a teenager (big surprise!) who steps out of a car at night to relieve himself and doesn’t return; his girlfriend becomes worried. She suddenly hears a faint squeaking on the roof of the car. Terrified, she hits the gas and drives away only to look in her rearview mirror and see her boyfriend hanging from a tree. The squeaks on the roof had been his sneakers as he struggled to prop himself up. How about the old woman who was buried alive? Her husband begs to have her exhumed after having nightmares of her trying to claw her way out of her grave. When they dig her up, her nails are bent back and there are scratch marks on the inside of the coffin. Would you dare to look into a mirror and chant “Bloody Mary” ten times, knowing it will call the horribly disfigured Mary Worth who will jump through the mirror The Ring style and disfigure you as well? As ridiculous as the idea seems, I can’t say I would take the chance. The US doesn’t have the market on gruesome tales cornered. In Italy, there is a legend of the black ambulance, driven by a gang of gypsies who kidnap children and cut out their organs so they can sell them on the black market. In England, there were tales of the Button Boy whom a little girl kept saying she played with in the attic…a boy they later found murdered by his parents and walled up in the fireplace of the house. Japan may be known for having some of the strangest and scariest legends of all time…no wonder since some of the most bone-chilling horror flicks originated there. Kuchisake-onna translates to the “slit mouthed woman,” a woman who had been so beautiful that a jealous lover sliced her face from the corners of her mouth to each ear so no other man would look upon her. She is said to go around murdering children who hesitate to answer when she asks them if she is beautiful. Do you suppose that the Joker would be upset to know his trademark fashion statement is actually centuries old? Perhaps you prefer your eerie legends a bit more…local. Care to take a stroll through what has become known as the Spider Gates Cemetery in Leicester, MA? It is rumored that many people have fainted in fear after seeing ghosts or after spirits have brushed up against them as they’ve walked through the squeaky webbed gate. Another local legend claims that the ghosts of mistreated patients have been seen and their screams can still be heard at the site of the old Worcester State Hospital ~ once called Bloomingdale Asylum for the Mentally Insane ~ where several patients committed suicide. To learn more about these and other urban legends, check out the Encyclopedia of Urban Legends by Jan Brunvand. To plan a freaky tour of one of the most haunted states in the nation (lucky us), do your research here first: http:// theshadowlands.net/places.

What Gives You Nightmares? By Katey Khaos

Maybe you’re no longer scared of the monster under the bed, or the boogeyman in the closet, but that doesn’t make you fearless! In fact, the most popular fears are things and situations people experience frequently! The top five fears in America are (drum roll please): 1. Glossophobia: fear of speaking in public. 2. Ophidiophobia: fear of snakes. 3. Claustrophobia: the fear of confined spaces. 4. Acrophobia: fear of heights. 5. Arachnophobia: the fear of spiders.

Fear This! By Kristie Bartlett

Doctors define a phobia as “a constant, extreme or irrational fear of an animal, object, place or situation” that would not normally worry most people. Katey has told you what the Top 5 phobias in America are ~ but there are some even more bizarre ones out there ~ see if you’ve heard of (or experienced!) any of these: 1. Ablutophobia ~ Fear of bathing

What makes Pulse readers’ skin crawl? We surveyed fifty people, males and females ranging in age from 18-30. Of the fifty people, we found out that…

2. Pteronophobia ~ Fear of being tickled by feathers (I say don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it…it’s not like using the whole chicken!!)

The majority of fears held by those surveyed cannot be explained ~ the person never had a bad experience which evoked the fear. “I’m afraid of so many things, most of them are completely irrational. A good chunk of the irrational fears are things that would probably never happen in a million years,” says Corey St.Jean (age 22). “For example, my completely ridiculous fear that while at a restaurant, I’ll be enjoying my food and all of a sudden a car will smash through the wall.”

3. Gephyrophobia ~ Fear of bridges (This one I kind of understand, although I’m less afraid of the bridge and more afraid of the driving/falling off the bridge.)

More than half of people had arachnophobia. As Kitty Hansen (age 21) recalled, “I’ve always been terrified of spiders. I’ve gone into pet stores determined to take a spider out and hold it. When I get to the cage, I’m in tears.” Some feared inanimate objects over living things. “I’m afraid of balloons popping,” Casey Oar (age 24) admitted, “ and just hearing a balloon pop gives me an anxiety attack every time.” One of the most common fears was not tangible, but instead an abstract idea. “Honestly, I’m most afraid of disappointment,” Conor Cara (age 26) said, “It’s been a life long fear of not being good enough for people.” Nearly everyone surveyed mentioned death as both a fear and something they’ve come across in nightmares. Nick Konstantino (age 20) and Jenny Grady (age 21) agreed t h a t they fear losing someone close to them. As Nick points out, “[Fears] are taken to extremes in nightmares.” Dave Denton (age 21) recalled multiple nightmares where he lost close friends in graphic, horrifying manners. “[The nightmares] are extremely detailed, and it’s not something I can stop from happening.” What can be done to overcome these fears and avoid waking up in a cold sweat? Believe it or not, confronting the fear, or educating yourself on what gives you the creeps may be the solution!

4. Gynophobia ~ Fear of women (Now that’s just wrong!) 5. Arachibutyrophobia ~ Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of one’s mouth (My poodle suffers from this fear.) 6. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedalioph obia ~ Fear of long words (I wish my Editor suffered from this fear!) 7. Koumpounophobia ~ Fear of buttons (Hey, if I were a guy, I think I’d be more afraid of zippers!) 8. Nomophobia ~ Fear of being disconnected from the rest of the world if you don’t have contact through mobile phone (I live for being disconnected ~ technologically speaking ~ from the rest of the world…the peace, the quiet…so nope, this phobia doesn’t make sense to me.) 9. Papaphobia ~ Fear of the Pope (At the risk of putting my foot in my mouth, I shall not comment.) 10. Lutraphobia ~ Fear of otters (Uh, seriously? How do you even discover that you have an otter phobia???) 11. Peladophobia ~ Fear of bald people (If you’re bald, and you have this phobia… whaddya do?) 12. Scopophobia ~ Fear of being looked at (Well duh, if I’m having a bad hair day…) 13. Trichophobia ~ Fear of loose hairs (I’m not really afraid of loose hairs, but I wouldn’t mind if the boyfriend occasionally cleaned out the shower drain ~ the joy of dating a long-haired musician!!!) 14. Zemmiphobia ~ Fear of the great mole rat (I think mall rats are pretty scary, are they related? And again, how the hell do you find out that you’re afraid of these things????) 15. Globophobia ~ Fear of balloons (There’s a Pam Anderson joke in there somewhere, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.)

When the Pen Is... Scarier...…Than the Sword Three Authors Who Define the Horror Genre Stephen King and Charlaine Harris

Barker’s Best: A Servant Reviews His Master

Peeling Back the Masks We Wear

I would be willing to bet my collection of signed hardcover first editions that if asked to name the most brilliant horror/fiction writers ever, Clive Barker would be near the top ~ if not at the top ~ of your list.

By Craig Lindberg

By Jillian Locke

Most are familiar with Mr. Barker from his breakthrough horror movie, the 1986 classic Hellraiser.

In honor of Halloween and the masks we don in celebration, I offer two very different, very talented story tellers, both of whom have explored the theme of peeling back our everyday masks to expose the gruesomeness beneath. First, the time-tested master: Stephen King. The 1989 psychological thriller The Dark Half walks the fine line between what the human mind can perceive as reality and the ghastly reality the book’s characters must embrace to survive. Thad Beaumont, writer and college professor, has come face to face with his worst fear ~ writer’s block. To overcome this debilitating obstacle, he creates his own mask by way of a pen name: George Stark. Behind the guise of Stark, Beaumont reinvents his writing career, transforming his cerebral fiction into a bloody horror show of homicidal torture. But his success comes with a price, and Beaumont is confronted with the other side of his “borrowed” mask...the real George Stark. A life-threatening tug-ofwar ensues, each man grappling to maintain his own separate identity by clawing fiercely to exist on the light side of the veil ~ while literally keeping his mask from melting away… Another character who is all too familiar with the concept of wearing a mask is Sookie Stackhouse, Charlaine Harris’s famed femme fatale from the novel (and HBO series of the same name) True Blood. The mask that Sookie bears is that of a stiff, nervous smile, her way of attempting to cloak from the world the bombardment of thoughts she receives by way of her telepathic gift…or curse, depending on the day. She acts as a selfless guide, almost a sage, to the supernatural community, heroically lending her psychic abilities in the midst of magical warfare. The beings at war ritually walk the fine line between the living and the dead in Bon Temps, Louisiana, showing their publically accepted countenances during the day, revealing their true faces when the sun has set and the moon is full… Perhaps this year, we should considering shedding our masks and dropping the disguises. Let the world see who we really are…but first, consider carefully: which would be more frightening ~ the façade or our true faces?!

But how many of you are aware that Hellraiser is an adaptation of his brilliant novella The Hellbound Heart? Clive Barker has written some of the most fearsome, truly gruesome stories to ever have been transferred from mind to paper ~ and he’s been doing it for over 30 years. Subjecting his loyal readers to some of the most horrific visions ever conceived, he simultaneously shows the exquisite beauty of these fantasies, creating a gorgeous nightmare, a world where you cover your eyes from the atrocities but always have your fingers slightly spread, peering from the safety of your hands to take them all in. Below is a “must-read” list of some of his most heinous, ghastly and downright scary literary works. Each, be it a short story, novella or full length novel, requires three things for maximum enjoyment…A night light, a strong constitution, and a perverse need to be scared senseless. 5. Hell’s Event (Books of Blood Volume 2): Hell is poised to take over the world if its champion can defeat the unknowing human rabble in, of all things, a road race. What makes this story terrifying is the realization by Hell’s unknowing nemesis along the race route of what exactly is at stake ~ as he watches his race mates gruesomely slain by an unknown force, knowing he must make a choice as the finish line approaches. 4. Dread (Books of Blood Volume 2): A college thesis involving the human condition is taken to extremes by a student obsessed with terror and how far people can be pushed by their fears. An experiment in sensory deprivation ends with maddening consequences for both the subject and the antagonist, who will unwittingly be brought face to face with his own interminable dread. 3. The Body Politic (Books of Blood 4/The Inhuman Condition): Charlie is experiencing strange dreams and visions, then awakens one night and witnesses his hands communicating with one another. Shortly after this disturbing revelation, a revolution ensues. “Right” frees “Left” (I’ll leave you to guess/find out how), and scurries away to raise support for their cause. This is one of the more fantastic/far-fetched stories from the master, but it does beg the question, “What if?” 2. The Hellbound Heart (novella): As groundbreaking as the Hellraiser film(s) it spawned, The Hellbound Heart is, quite simply, a nightmare put to paper and bound for all those brave enough to read it. The inevitable connection between pleasure and pain that most, and I stress most, ignore is brought to life in vivid detail. A gut-wrenching journey into a world of exotic pleasures and exquisite pain, the line between the two is blurred to torturous, delicious perfection by none other than Pinhead himself. 1. Rawhead Rex (Books of Blood Volume 3): This story has haunted me from the very first time I read it (I have read it many times since the first). An ancient beast, a king, is awakened from a forced hibernation, an imprisonment by lowly humans…and he is pissed off. The shear brutality of the main character ~ Rawhead ~ is what makes this story terrifying. His need for meat, especially “child meat,” is insatiable. No one is safe from his hunger or his vengeance. Women, children, all fall beneath the power…and teeth…of the mighty Rawhead Rex!

Meet Heather Langenkamp, A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Nancy Thompson One of the First Girls to Kick Evil’s Ass By Jillian Locke

At this year’s Rock and Shock, horror fans of all ages will have a chance to meet Heather Langenkamp, who played one of the most kick-ass, trail-blazing heroines in horror history ~ Nancy Thompson, Freddy Krueger’s arch nemesis. In 1984, the world came to know A Nightmare on Elm Street. We came to know the burned monster who terrorized teenagers in their sleep, we came to fear the clicking of the knifedfingered gloves and the sound of the haunting lullaby, “One two, Freddy’s coming for you…” But behind the menacing gloves and striped sweater, there was a fierce, determined, fearless girl who stood up to the ruthless killer when no one else would. Heather Langenkamp starred as Nancy Thompson, the bold teenager to whom fell the harrowing responsibility of fighting one of the most devastating slasher antagonists of all time. “Nancy is a very heroic figure in the history of film. She’s got a reputation of being a very special woman in the history of horror movies,” says Lankencamp. Eager to further explore Nancy’s legacy in the realm of horror, the ANOES star used her appearances at six horror conventions to ask fans what they thought of Nancy’s character, and how the courageous heroine had impacted their lives. “What we came to was a touching realization ~ Nancy’s character had been a touch stone for a lot of people who had difficulty in their lives as teenagers, and that they had always viewed her as a heroic person they could model themselves after.” Langenkamp turned these testimonials, as well as her own search for Nancy in the midst of Freddy mania, into the documentary I Am Nancy. “It was unexpected, but it ended up being a central point of the documentary ~ fans were really open about some incredibly painful struggles in their childhood. One fan even said that this movie helped him more than his psychiatrist.” Horror films provide a general escape from the ~ ironically ~ horrors of everyday life, and they also create a platform through which the audience can witness ~ and draw strength from ~ people facing their fears in order to survive. A Nightmare on Elm Street broke the slasher film mold by incorporating the unflinchingly gutsy Nancy, a young female protagonist who never backed down, who never succumbed to her fears and allowed Evil to triumph over her. She represented the remaining strength of her fallen friends, finally overcoming their collective fears that had been Freddy’s main life force: “I take back every bit of energy I ever gave you. You’re nothing. You’re sh*t.” Finally, a female triumphed, a female did not fall prey to the monster, a female became the heroine, not one of the body count. Although tremendously fun to watch ~ even decades after its release ~ with all its campy cult humor and gore ~ ANOES does carry a message: by taking back our power, we can overcome anything. Langenkamp shares that “We would ask people, ‘What’s your Freddy?’ Cancer, life traumas, terrible things that are happening; over and over again, people related to how Nancy has to battle Freddy in her dream world. It moved us a great deal, and we were really grateful to our fans to come forward with these really personal stories.” So with all of life’s pressures and seemingly insurmountable odds, maybe we should all take a cue from the teenage girl who grabbed her nightmare by the balls and brought her terrifying demon to his knees…and in the process, became part of horror film history. www.iamnancy.net/http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Am-NANCYDocumentary/98807161885 http://nightmareonelmstreetfilms.com www.rockandshock.com

Crank Those SCARY BANDS!!!! By Jillian Locke

Horror movies, demons, witches, vampires, werewolves, ghosts and ghouls…Jason, Michael, and Freddie impersonators roaming the streets… pranksters, diabolical trick-or-treaters, maybe even a few spirits roaming the earth in search of revenge… but who is providing the soundtrack to the most epically metal night of the year!?!?!??!???! Why, Pulse’s SCARIEST BANDS, of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First off, what makes a band scary? Is it the costumes or masks they wear, like Mushroomhead’s or Slipknot’s? Or how about the make-up and theatrics, like King Diamond, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Immortal, or Behemoth? Break out the gauntlets, the corpse paint, inverted crosses, pleather, platform boots, and epic metal ~ these bands provide an underworld-inspired fright-fest for the eyes and ears! Maybe you’re more into the handson horror show. If so, Bad Luck 13 would be at the top of the scariest bands list: fireballs, demolition, and destruction are their calling card. And then there’s always Gwar, the mutants from outer space who have a penchant for defiling the likes of George W. Bush, Michael Jackson, and Paris Hilton, all while spraying crazed audiences with their sticky-icky green space juice.

When spending an evening with these bands, come equipped with riot gear and ponchos, in that order. If you’re into the dark realms and the purest of pure evil, let’s take a hop, skip and a jump over to Norway and sling a few back with Mayhem. Hell, let’s invite Burzum into the mix and warm ourselves by a HUGE bonfire… imagine if Mayhem and Burzum had a metal baby? THAT would be the scariest band on earth! And of course, let’s not forget the grand daddies of taking music and personas to the edge and challenging the status quo ~ Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper. One of the founding fathers of metal, the boys from Birmingham brought themes of horror and the occult to the main stage while modern day metalheads were learning how to walk and scream. Alice Cooper took the occult imagery to the next level, crafting terrifically bizarre and horror-inspired stage shows, taking the shockfactor and showmanship of metal to heights that would transform the arena of rock n’ roll. Whatever your favorite scariest band may be, CRANK IT with pride this Halloween!

Horror Films ~

To Produce or Not To Produce, That Is the Question! By Tim Branch

Here’s a rundown of some horror films ~ or at least the concepts thereof ~ currently languishing in that suspended state of animation called Development Hell. There’s a good chance that eventually some of these films/flicks will make it to the theaters ~ and that others will be completely buried and forgotten. Any bets on which will be given the breath of life?

At the Mountains of Madness Director: Guillermo del Toro

Motel Hell The original followed a farmer who would kidnap and bury unsuspecting travelers up to their necks in his garden and keep them alive until they’re ready to be picked and made into his famous beef jerky.

Based on a tale by H.P. Lovecraft, the film would detail a gruesome discovery made during the 1930s by a scientific expedition to the South Pole, which hints at the true origin of mankind having come from elder gods...They soon realize that during this discover they may have also accidentally awakened prehistoric creatures.

Phantasm 5 Director: Don Coscarelli It’s said that the plot will continue with the Tall Man still traveling from town to town turning the dead into his own army and using his deadly spheres against anyone who opposes him. Mike, who is developing psychic powers, and his brother try to stop him.

Race With the Devil Director: Chris Moore No official plot yet, but the original told the story of a group of vacationers as they stumble across a cult of satanist. Once they report them to the authorities all the evidence vanishes and the vacationers are forced to return to their business, but now they’ve got the cult following them.

Rosemary’s Baby on maneuvers. Cooper’s story of werewolves in the woods is met with skepticism until the soldiers return to the now-destroyed farmhouse and discover evidence that something strange indeed went on. They discover a soldier from Capt. Ryan’s special ops team (who were mentioned in the first film, but never seen), who explains that his company was also slaughtered by werewolves and have become werewolves in this film.

Fatal Frame No official plot yet, but the game followed a girl, armed with an antique camera that’s able to capture and damage ghosts, who travels to a haunted mansion in search of her missing brother.

Battle Royale No official plot yet, but the original was set in Japan, where violence among the youth have sky-rocketed, leaving the government to create a program dubbed “Battle Royale”, in which a class of 40 + jr. high students are sent to a remote island to battle each other, with only one expected to survive.

Candyman 4 Set in New England in an all-girls college where a professor is the descendant of Candyman, yet she doesn’t know who or what he is.

Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat Director: Rob Green Pvt. Laurence Cooper (survivor of first film) is picked up by a team of American soldiers who are

14 THEPULSEMAG.COM | OCT. 2011

Friday the 13th 2 No official plot yet, but it will likely take place sometime after the events of the first film.

House of Re-Animator Director: Stuart Gordon Ignoring the previous three films, the story focuses on a “Bush-like president” who dies in office and his staff covertly brings in Dr. Herbert West to reanimate him. Infection No official plot yet, but the original followed the problematic staff at a rundown and isolated hospital, where a mysterious infection among the patients is revealed to have a supernatural origin.

No official plot yet, but the original told the story of a young couple who move into a New York apartment ~ where the woman becomes mysteriously pregnant and soon discovers that her neighbors are a part of a coven of witches and her husband has allowed her to be impregnated by the devil in exchange for a successful career.

The Bad Seed Director: Eli Roth No official plot yet, but the original was about a seemingly perfect daughter, who turns to killing.

The Changeling No official plot yet, but the original was about a man, who tries to solve the mystery behind the mysterious happenings in his new home.

Worst Case Scenario Director: Richard Raaphorst The story tells of a fictional FIFA World Cup Finale between Germany and Netherlands. When the team from Germany loses, they send out a zombie invasion as revenge. A small group of friends flees from the nationwide madness to a North Sea island where a horde of Wehrmacht zombies wait. For more details on each of these projects, head to www.upcominghorrormovies.com/tags/ movie-tags/dead-projects.

ENTERTAINMENT

Ventriloquist Jeff Dunham Brings His Irrepressible Cast of Characters to the DCU Center with “Controlled Chaos” By Tim Branch Ventriloquist Jeff Dunham is a very funny person. Well, let me take that back. Ventriloquist Jeff Dunham is many very funny…people, as is evidenced by the tremendous popularity of the many dummies (shhh, don’t tell them we used that word!) he’s created to share the stage with him. There’s Peanut, furry, out of control, and just a bit off his rocker, Walter, who’s perpetually grumpy, Bubba J, the NASCAR-lovin’ redneck, and Achmed the Dead Terrorist, who manages to bumble his way into our hearts with his bumbling, harmless ways. Jeff Dunham is also a very multi-talented person. Not only does he create, craft, and bring his “posse” to life (and how DOES he keep his mouth from moving when it’s their turn to talk, which they make sure it is quite often) onstage all around the world, he’s also a comic, a frequent guest on shows like “The Tonight Show” and “Late Night with David Letterman,” a Comedy Central phenomenon, a producer, a writer (if you haven’t already read it, you’ve GOT to pick up his 2010 autobiography All By My Selves: Walter, Peanut, Achmed and Me), and much, much more… He’s also a very nice person ~ despite being in the middle of a major tour, Jeff took the time to answer a few questions about himself (despite protestations from Peanut et al that all the questions should focus on them…sorry, guys!)…proving that he’s not just funny when he’s got scripted material, he’s also just plain funny off the cuff, too. Who…or what…makes you laugh? Lewis Black, “The Simpsons,” “South Park,” and any dog in a superhero outfit. Forbes named you to its list of “Most Powerful Entertainers” two years running ~ what does “powerful” mean to you in that context? Well, I’ve been an Apple and Macintosh fan since the first Mac commercial in 1984, and one of

their slogans used to be “The Most Powerful Macintosh, Ever.” So, I guess it means I’m a really kick-ass computer… At least for six months until the next one comes out. Are there topics that you consider too taboo to touch, or is it all in how you present them to an audience? The comedy adage says that tragedy plus time equals comedy… But it’s not a formula that will ever apply in tragedies such as 9/11, the Shuttle disasters, loss of life by soldiers, law enforcement, firefighters… Humor can play a part in dealing with grief and learning to move on in life, but a comic must have a keen sense of what to joke about and what not to. So yes, I draw a line for myself in many subjects. You’ve been to a host of European countries ~ is there one country that you’re dying to visit so that you can create a character based on a “native?” I’ve already been there, done a show, and the little guy is currently in my head ~ “percolating,” if you will. So my answer is, “Oui.” Any plans to write another book? Yes. But what exactly that book is right now, I have no idea. It was a process that I loathed and loved all at the same time. For more on Jeff, please visit www.jeffdunham.com. And don’t miss Jeff and his cast of characters when they land at the DCU Center on Friday, October 21!

Black Tide Rolls Back In With Post Mortem By Craig Lindberg Phenoms, upstarts, punks…call them what you will, the members of Black Tide have been touring the world and playing their style of rock for arena and stadium crowds alike for close to five years, opening for the likes of Bullet For My Valentine, Static X and the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy. Black Tide’s latest effort for Interscope Records, Post Mortem, shows off the chops of a band who was often written off as just a gimmick due to their young age when they were first signed to Atlantic Records ~ all were just teenagers, and in fact the original drummer, Winder Marin, was replaced to keep the youthful image of the band intact when labels started to take interest. Post Mortem shows a darker, more mature side of the band whose debut release, Light from Above, showcased screaming guitars, shrill vocals and had a heavy arena rock vibe. “We tried to get away from the high-pitched 80s sound we originally started out with,” says bassist Zack Sandler. “We’ve been exposed to so many great bands of the past couple years, it’s hard not to be influenced by one or more of them.” Post Mortem is heavier in just about every conceivable way. The guitar tone

is crunchier, the songs are laden with more breakdowns than hooks while still remaining catchy, the lyrics are coming from a deeper place and even the artwork and imagery of the album differ greatly from their previous effort. Zack shares, “We’ve done a lot of growing up and most of it’s been on the road, away from everything we were familiar with. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s tough too. The first album we wrote about the things we thought we knew, this album we wrote about some of the things we never wanted to know.” Zack also let on that he is a huge fan of horror movies. “The original Nightmare on Elm Street films scared the hell out of me. You knew it couldn’t be real, but it didn’t seem to matter, I was always a little bit afraid to fall asleep.” When asked about the Nightmare remake, Zack replies, “I didn’t hate it as much as others seemed to. I mean it wasn’t even close to being as scary as the original, but if you’re going to remake a movie that good, then the remake can’t completely suck.” Black Tide can be found on the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival touring the states as we speak. Ryan Staples and The Two-Hour Mic Check By Joshua Lyford

Ryan Staples is a twenty-five year old writer and stand-up comedian from Worcester. He is also the smiling face behind the regular stand-up event ‘Two Hour Mic Check’ at Beatnik’s. Staples went to school at Burncoat High. He says that he got into comedy by way of finding a fun way “…to pass the time at night. We would hang around, riding our bikes. Then we would head inside and just watch old stand-up and ‘Saturday Night Live.’” He was initially influenced by the more slapstick comedy of that era, particularly the more exuberant characters brought to life by Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and Dana Carvey. He would later come to admire those whom he describes as “…real masters of the craft,” such as Louis CK, Patton Oswalt, Jerry Seinfeld, George Carlin and Richard Pryor. Staples went on to become an electronics tech in the Navy. He would eventually write two books ~ the novel The Angel with the Crayons and the novella Hi Jim. Staples also produced his own live comedy album, which clocked in at just under an hour, aptly named “F**k You Ryan Staples, you tried to do an hour and you only did 54 minutes.”

20 THEPULSEMAG.COM | OCT. 2011

The Two-Hour Mic Check night of standup runs every third Thursday of each month. Staples says that the event was inspired by his desire to “…let people know that there are great comics coming out of Worcester and the area.” It is a way for local and broad-area talent to network, which, Staples says, is a “… huge part of being a comedian. Comedy is incestuous and you are always performing with other comedians and becoming friends with them.” The event began last October and has been gaining momentum with each passing month. Staples chooses the performers by gut and friendship, always bringing on his favorite guys from all over New England ~ like Matt Kona, Will Noonan, Dave McDonough, Alingon Mitra, Erick Levi, Matt Aromando and his area stand-up brethren, Sean Connolly and Dan Smith. Staples shares that the community is “…super tight-knit, everyone is looking out for each other.” The Two Hour Mic Check starts promptly at eight and is always free. Make sure to get there early as shows are stretched to standing room only each month. So head to Beatnik’s on Park Ave on the third Thursday of every month and support Worcester comedy.

Music Worcester Presents The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China By Shelly Aucoin

What is destined to become one of the city’s signature events will be held in Worcester’s Canal District on Sunday, October 30th, beginning at 8pm. Dubbed Canalloween,” this evening of fun will be hosted by establishments in the District; most of the venues are on Water Street, with a few scattered on neighboring streets. Halloween is now the second most celebrated holiday in the US, coming in right after Christmas, and it was time for Worcester County to come up with a great Halloween party ~ and thus Canalloween was born! Imagine one neighborhood with about a dozen Halloween parties all going on at the same time ~ costumes, friends, music, and more ~ and you get the vibe of Canalloween ~ a [Fun] Nightmare on Water Street! Sponsors of the event include Coors Light Beer, Guinness and Wachusett; in addition, the newly renovated Canal Lofts are a sponsor along with radio stations WCRN, WXLO, The Pike, and Oldies 98.5. The presenting media sponsor is Pulse magazine. In the future, organizers hope to include an afternoon kids’ event and a parade in the early evening. For more information and a list of participating clubs, visit www.canalloween.com. Since the government created it in 1950, the National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China (NAPRC) has toured over forty countries and won nearly as many awards along the way. Now they’re coming to amaze and entertain at the oldest music festival in the United States. Ms. Zhang Hong, General Director of the Company, explains that they are in such great demand in their home hall that it was not previously possible to tour the U.S. The performers combine complex choreography, acrobatics, Chinese King Fu, contortion, plate spinning, juggling and ballet in their breathtaking act. As if that weren’t enough, beautiful girls in elaborate costumes seal the deal. These lovely ladies perform aerial tricks like tossing their partners thirty feet into the air and juggling nine balls at a time while they ascend and descend an unsupported ladder. Performing dazzling somersaults, tumbling through hoops, and balancing are the least of their talents ~ you will absolutely amazed by the “Peacock’s Spreading Tail” where twenty-four people pose on just two bicycles. “Of the many great acrobatics companies from China, [we] are indeed the greatest acrobatic company in the world,” says Zhang Hong. Artistic Director Ms. Sun Lili will choreograph the 2011 tour in collaboration with Ms. Hong. “Our collective experience and expertise in all elements of Chinese Acrobatics were the genesis for this new and thrilling program,” explains Ms. Hong. “All of the acts have been received by sensational audience response.” Brilliant colors, masterful lighting, traditional Chinese music and a unique art form combine to create a show you won’t soon forget. Audiences around the world have been brought from the edges of their chairs to cheer on their feet as the troupe seems to defy gravity and the limits of the human body alike. You’ll have to see it to believe it. Join the fun at the 152nd Annual Worcester Music Festival on Friday, November 4th at 8:00 PM. The performance will take place in Mechanic’s Hall, located at 321 Main Street in Worcester. Tickets are $46, $43; students $20 advance/$15 at the door. Insigniya By Bruce Elliot

Extra! Extra! Three time-traveling, superhuman musical prodigies have landed in our fair state with a two-pronged mission: to spread music of self-empowerment and forge a new era of sonic exploration. They call themselves Insigniya, and they’re here to enlighten us with what they label funk fusion livetronica, but you’ll just call mindblowing ecstasy. The members of Insigniya have, thus far, managed to pass themselves off as mere Massachusetts mortals. They are: Dan Searl ~ guitar, guitar synthesizer, Jake Fletcher ~ bass, synthesizers, and Josh Weinberg ~ drums, samples/sequencing. One day while Dan and Josh were hanging with mutual friends in the fall of 2009, Dan called out, “Does anyone here play an instrument?” Josh answered, the two started jamming, and they completed the sonic picture some months later when Jake arrived on bass. With influences from Miles Davis to Coltrane, Wayne Krantz Trio, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Lotus, and Cream, Insigniya began spreading its own brand of astonishing progressive-fusion to the masses. And their grooves are funkier than the men’s room at Fenway on free burrito night during extra innings. Yeah man, that’s funky, and the festival circuit is eating them up “Josh went to a few festivals, had an awesome time at all of them…and most importantly experienced a scene where Insigniya’s music could thrive and flourish... From this, we reached out to festivals we wanted to play, which has led to the band being on the bill for 11 festivals around the northeast in the 2011 season.” Attend one, and you’ll experience “a party, a great time, a transcendental experience, good people, joy, ever-improving light shows, dancing, and raging,” explains Josh. With an upcoming east coast tour, live DVD, and plans to release a studio album in December, Insignia’s musical mission will soon be accomplished. For more, including tour and festival dates, visit www.insigniya.com or like them at www.facebook.com/insigniya.music.

Eye Witness’s A Pleasant Tomorrow

Hit the Bus By Jennifer Russo

By Bruce Elliot

They say that sometimes an idea just hits you out of nowhere… well, the opposite happened to David Garden when he accidentally hit a bus on his way to work one day. Don’t worry, no one got hurt (except maybe his car), but a band name was born for a couple of guys who can pretty much play it all and sing it all. This duo plays all the local bars, weddings, private parties and charitable events and has a song list that includes everything from Neil Diamond to Oasis to Johnny Cash. According to David, their songs include everything from 50s classics to current chart toppers. “The two of us don’t take ourselves too seriously. We have an eclectic mix of songs that a wide range of people can enjoy.” I asked David why two young guys would want to bust out the oldies and what makes them want to do covers in general. “Covering songs is easier because the hits have already been written for us…songs are timeless. If it’s got a good hook it shouldn’t matter when it was written.” His favorite songs to play include “Run Around Sue” by Dion & the Belmonts ~ “For some reason it always gets people singin’ and dancin’!” ~ “The Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show because it shows off their vocal range and “Charlie on the MTA” ~ “A true classic – it might be the oldest song we play, but everyone knows the words and there is a lot of table thumping going on.” These light-hearted guys just want to have a good time and show their audience the same. Last year for Halloween they dressed up as the Blues Brothers while rocking out a show in Grafton. Playing together since 2009, David and his band-mate Eric Yanaway boast beautifully harmonized vocals and the ability between them to play acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica, various percussion instruments and even ukulele! They sometimes hire a drummer for larger events to heighten the energy level (if that’s possible!) even more. Old or young, if you want a great night out listening to your favorite songs and soaking up a ton of energy from the audience and band alike, get to one of these guys’ shows ~ but please don’t hit a bus in the excitement of trying to get there. Check out Hit the Bus when they play the Westender in Marlboro on Nov. 23rd and “Like” them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/hit-the-bus. Need some great wedding entertainment? Shoot them an e-mail at: gord002003@yahoo.com

Eye Witness, a politically charged, socially conscious folk duo from West Boylston, has something to say ~ and the voice to say it. Their latest CD, A Pleasant Tomorrow, an ironic title considering the weighty material, runs as cold, dark, and deep as the Atlantic, but their message is delivered with such passion and conviction that it cannot be ignored. Principal songwriter, lead vocalist, and guitarist Milo proposed to multiinstrumentalist wife Rainy during a gig at Ralph’s in Worcester back in 2008. Together they have created one of the quirkiest, most charming and original musical acts to come out of the Worcester area in many years. Eye Witness is Dylan meets The Velvet Underground, but with a healthy mix of blues and the Irish punk attitude of The Dropkick Murphys. The CD opens strongly with “Which Side Are You On,” a classic union song written by Florence Reese, the wife of a union organizer in 1931. Milo’s haunting voice and guitar blend well with Rainy’s percussion and backing vocals. Their minimalist approach lends a timeless quality to each song. “No More” and “You Can Run” point out the futility of war and the hypocrisy of nationalism and militaristic pride. Many songs have the weight of death hanging upon them. “Black Crow Blues” is a first person love letter from a dying man to his young bride. “The Alpha Male is Dead” questions leaders controlled by greed and profit at the expense of our planet and its people. ON CD Oh No Fiasco’s SelfTitled Album By Jim Gold

Knoxville, Tennessee band Oh No Fiasco’s self-titled debut delivers on their boisterous promise of an electro dance, rock and roll sonic adventure. Band mates Lindsey Stamey (vocals), Seth Rowlette (guitar), Thomas Boyd (bass), Cameron Cunningham (keys) and Colin Cunningham (drums) have been extensively touring the south, and are now bringing their hardcore and discoinspired anthems to concert-goers catching them on tour with Alien Ant Farm. They are better known for their explosive live show, but their album is a good (if short) sampling of their unique brand of alternative dance rock. Though only seven songs long, Oh No Fiasco’s debut gives you a good sense of their novel musical style. Formed from two broken-up Knoxville bands, their diverse sound holds appeal for both those who came to rock and for those who came to dance. It’s hard to avoid drawing parallels to Paramore (a fellow Tennessee band), but Oh No Fiasco’s music is poppier with

more synth influences. For a perfect example, check out the track “I Have to Know.” Singer Stamey’s polished and emotional vocals tie together the various ingredients, and you can

hear elements of some of the bands they count as influences throughout the disc. Fans of Muse, Mew, Circa Survive, Massive Attack, and Of Montreal should find plenty to like in Oh No Fiasco’s freshman album. Check out Oh No Fiasco on tour throughout the country, and online at www.ohnofiasco.com, www.facebook.com/ohnofiascomusic and www.myspace.com/ohnofiasco.

Dream On, Dreamer’s Heartbound By Bruce Elliot

As the camera pans downward on the idyllic opening scene of David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, we begin to glimpse something dark, dangerous, and downright sinister lurking just below the innocent surface. This is the affect one feels while listening to the six-piece Australian metalcore band Dream On, Dreamer’s debut CD, Heartbound. Four Aussies, with a German lead singer and American drummer, have somehow managed to produce a sonic pallet that is at once majestic and beautiful, shadowy and frightening. Perhaps it’s the band’s diverse personalities which help generate such a dynamic soundscape. German exchange student Marcel Gadacz’s soaring tenor blends nicely with aggressive Aussie guitarists Callan Orr and Luke Domic’s hardcore scales. Fellow Aussie keyboardist Daniel Jungwirth adds drama and splendor, while the thunderous rhythm section of Michael McLeod and American drummer Aaron Fiocca supplies a welcome punch to the midsection. The familiar scream and growl of the hardcore genre is

always so close at hand that I found myself checking the liner notes to see if a demonically possessed Linda Blair was in the line-up ~ minus the pea soup. Strong tracks include the debut single

“Downfall,” which has already gained over 10,000 downloads and packs all the wallop of an Imperial Death Star. The dramatic confessional “Blinded” simply comes clean. “I was too blind to see, too scared to leave / I was everything I never ever wanted to be.” For more on the meteoric Dream On, Dreamer, including tour dates, news, and how to own a copy of Heartbound, visit www.dreamondreamerband.com .

~ can move effortlessly amongst artists as different as XTC, Godsmack, Jeff Beck, Alice in Chains, and icons of progressive 70s fusion), instead intertwining into an invigorating array of musical designs. Acoustic finger style guitar and neo-folk sounds mingle seamlessly with screeching electric licks, pop vocal rock, electric-synth rhythms, and hard driving guitar solos. Reddy’s latest not only offers the new, but also looks to the past, offering re-mastered tracks from two of his previous solo offerings. Blue collar tunes and sing-a-long drinking ballads from Drinking Songs for the Working Class and a collection of pure instrumental tracks from Sonification ~ showcasing Reddy’s talent as a solo guitarist ~ appear alongside the six new songs. Reddy tours regularly throughout New England, so be sure to check out www.chrisreddy.com for dates, CD purchase information, and a healthy sampling of MP3s.

GOT GAME? They Drew First Blood, Not Me! By Tom Hodgson

Prepare to Defend Against the Zombie Horde! Dead Block Is Here! SHOCKING! HORRIFIC! AWESOME!!! By Tim Branch Digital Reality and developer Candygun Games’ zombie defense game, Dead Block, shambled onto Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system for Microsoft on July 6th, and onto PlayStation®Network on July 20th ~ and the reviews are in! Dead Block is an engaging, campy and humor-filled title that mixes zombie killing with tactical defense strategies, letting players defend their territory by discovering new weapons to strategically rock ‘n trap the invading zombie horde!

The 1980s were an eclectic time. Thankfully, I was too young to understand what Member’s Only, parachute pants, and Jordache were and walked away remembering the finer things. With Ninja Turtles, Domino Rally, Nerf, Super Soaker, Ghostbusters, and Mario bed sheets (which I may or may not still use), I had it made. But there was nothing I owned that got more use than my Ziploc bag filled to the brim with plastic army figurines. The rifleman, the rocket guy, the poor bastard with one grenade, and all the “eh eh ehs” and “kahpcchhh” noises that accompanied them as we stormed the ant hill will resonate with me until I’m six feet under.

Set in the U.S. during the idyllic 1950s, Dead Block takes players to a simpler time when a gallon of gas cost a few pennies, the “golden age” of cinema was in full swing, and that new (and apparently insanely evil) craze called rock ‘n roll swept the nation ~ and caused an apocalyptic musical plague to turn the deceased into the walking dead! As one of three survivors of the shuffling zombie onslaught ~ Boy Scout Mike Bacon, construction worker Jack Foster, and no-nonsense meter maid Foxy Jones, each equipped with his/her own unique “Smart Bomb” attack ~ players

Toy Soldiers: Cold War on Xbox Live pays homage to all those afternoons spent being a boy. It is similar in design to Toy Story, where a largerthan-life design delivers you to a place steeped in smiles and memories. The battle against Communism takes place on cleverly-designed bureaus and beds, surrounded by shelves adorned with Lava Lamps and Rubik’s cubes. The game is a tower defense hybrid, allowing you to control the armaments you deploy. A set number of spots are designated for turrets on each map, the management of which will either liberate you from the Russians or lead you to drinking a lot of cheap vodka in their rule. While you can leave battlements to their designated abilities, alternating waves of enemies will often require careful and hasty redistribution of your weapons to accommodate their varied attack styles. Aside from the assortment of turrets, each map offers a unique batterypowered toy you can operate. From tanks to helicopters, they allow for momentary Reagan justice all over the USSR. The jacked up attack, however, comes at the cost of viciously fleeting battery life. Leave it off its charger for too long and you can consider yourself grounded from it for the rest of the level. The light-hearted nostalgia of the design is complimented perfectly by a very accessible arcadey style of play. Hop on a turret and mow down waves of Commie scum to accumulate your multiplier. The higher your successive slaughter rate climbs, the more amply you are rewarded. The ultimate is the Commando Action Figure, the plastic Rambo incarnate which drops from the sky in its packaging dual-wielding a machine gun and rocket launcher, with over-the-top 80s action movie catchphrases to boot. Often times though you’re stuck with a camera system which implements angles with the quality of VHS, which in a Blu-ray era of games feels as dated as the action figures. Slow and clunky controls sometimes overwhelm your overhead perspective as you roam the map constricted by the hidden barriers. But for $15, you’d currently be hard-pressed to find a title more worthy of your money on Xbox Live. With co-op options, varying difficulties, and multiple game modes to conquer, crushing comrades hasn’t been this enjoyable since Rocky beat Drago. It’s a great way to waste away an afternoon and reminisce while doing it about all those years ago you were on your bedroom floor doing the same thing.

will fortify their area by boarding up windows and setting a variety of unique unlockable traps, collecting items and power-ups, taking on zombies oneon-many with a variety of upgradeable weapons, and even rocking them to shreds with awesome guitar power! “We’re a huge fan of zombies, but we’re even bigger fans of finding the most creative ways of disposing of the undead buggers,” said Balazs Horvath, Director of Publishing of Digital Reality. “Dead Block has been a dream project of ours, and we’re elated to finally unleash it upon the world.” Team up with three of your buddies and drop-in/drop-out of play for the most addictive co-op zombie thrashing experience ever with Dead Block. HALLOWEEN

Should There Be an Age Limit? By Michael Walsh

Halloween gives us an opportunity to express our inner selves and our inner fantasies (take that as you will) through extravagant clothing choices and, when called for, a generous dose of colored corn syrup. In past years, I myself have been fortunate enough to pull off costumes ranging from Peter Pan to Otto Rocket and the wildly popular Keith Stone (in 2010). While in college, it’s pretty much anything goes on All Hallows’ Eve. But upon graduation, we are faced with many difficult decisions ~ including how to spend the final night of October now that it’s no longer cool to ring doorbells and hold out a pillowcase (for the greedy amongst us) or a plastic pumpkin pail. The problem is that there are no strict guidelines, no laws, for Halloween. Once you hit 21, you can spend the night at a bar trying to get that slutty Alice to come see your Wonderland, or you can turn out all the lights outside your house and scare the crap out of the neighborhood kids by jumping out at them when their little ghostie and princessy selves come a-knockin’ for treats (bonus points if you can get a wee goblin to wet itself). Some adults throw Halloween parties. This is dangerous territory ~ a difficult line to walk, between lame and scary, fun and embarrassing. Do you show really horrific horror films and risk grossing out half your guests? Do you have a costume contest and hope for not too many aging Britney Spears or guys who still think dressing up as Borat is hilarious? Or do you skip any sort of theme whatsoever and just reminisce about how much fun Halloween used to be when you ran around in “Scream” masks? So, I ask, is there an appropriate age to stop dressing up and carve a giant “L” into your Jack-o-lantern? Some people are just born “over it” and are the Halloween equivalent to Christmas’s Ebeneezer Scrooge. Costumes never held any appeal, and neither did having their parents drag them from house to house for absurdly tiny candy bars that Mom inevitably seized, fearing them poisoned or hiding a razor blade. For others, that age hit in the middle of high school when they got to be “too cool.” I feel sorry for these people. They missed out on all the slutty outfits, bar hopping and toilet paper tossing that every young adult should experience…well, except the pranks that ultimately involved disappointed parents opening their door to see you ~ accompanied by two adults dressed very convincingly as cops ~ but not celebrating the holiday. For some, that age may never come. They will avoid that maturity like a young Jamie Lee Curtis sprinting from the menacing Michael Myers. Women will spend money on Daisy Duke costumes that would be better spent on a Planet Fitness memberships. Men will dress up like Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas in 300, oblivious to the fact that they look much more like John Candy in his heyday (Daisy, meet John). Costume or not, though, we should all enjoy Halloween, so I will leave you with this final thought: though werewolves, vampires, and zombies may be scary in their own right, there is nothing more horrifying than hearing a knock at your door and opening it to reveal your demon of a Philosophy professor sporting a French maid’s costume.

Our friends at KOTK productions have managed to outdo even themselves on this one,” says IWRESTLEDABEARONCE’s Steven Bradley. “We are all HUGE horror movie fans, particularly old-school cheesy fun horror fans, so this project has definitely been the most insane and enjoyable undertaking in the history of our band.” IWRESTLEDABEARONCE will also participate in signings, panels and other appearances at Rock And Shock, along with the convention’s other featured guests ~ including Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Bill Moseley, Lance Henriksen, Gary Busey, Jake Busey, Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery, Ace Frehley, Roddy Piper, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, Bill Moseley, Derek Mears, Tim Thomerson, Miko Hughes and many more. Tickets for Rock And Shock are available at: www. rockandshock.com/tickets.htm. About A Beary Scary Movie IWABO are part of one of the most f**ked up, crazy-ass twisted mother**king fantastical adventures that has ever been told in the history of metal. Something monstrous and mentally deranged from the ‘80s hair metal scene has been sent straight from hell to shred through their “experimental” metal flesh and leave their bodies ~ not to mention today’s metal scene ~ bloody, battered, and torn apart. Steven, Mikey, John, Krysta, and Ricky are in the fight of their lives as they face the insane bloodthirsty flesh fiend known as Shreddy. Watch as Shreddy slaughters each member one by one while they sleep. The only limits are those of the insane minds of IWABO. Can they make it out of this bizarre and gruesome tale alive? Will IWABO continue or will they perish at the hands of this madman? Only those brave enough to watch A Beary Scary Movie will find out....

HESHER

The Anarchic Black Comedy Comes to DVD and Blu-Ray Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) leads the dark comedy in the title role, an unconventional loner who hates the world and everyone in it and is more interested in starting fires than in finding a job. Also starring Rainn Wilson (TV’s “The Office”), Devon Brochu (In the Valley of Elah) and Oscar® winner Natalie Portman (Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Black Swan, 2010), this dark comedymeets-fairy tale, directed by Spencer Susser, was a film festival favorite ~ both an Official Selection of South by Southwest and a nominee for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2010. Hailed as a “…delectably anarchic black comedy….refreshingly original” (New York Post) and a “…strange and twisted heavy metal meditation on grief” by screenrant.com, the film features the music of Metallica and Motorhead ~ plus pornography and burning sh*t to the ground; these are a few of Hesher’s favorite things, things he brings into the lives of TJ (Brochu) and his father Paul (Wilson) when he takes up residence in the garage…uninvited. Grief stricken by the loss of TJ’s mother in a car accident, Paul can’t muster the strength to evict the strange squatter and soon the longhaired, tattooed, rusty-van owning Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher’s anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and helps them embrace life once more. DVD & BLU-RAY SPECIAL FEATURES* Deleted Scenes Outtakes Cast & Crew Interviews Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s “hitRECord” “Air Traffic” Shot Montage Sketch Gallery (drawings featured in the film)

*Subject to change Head to hesherthemovie.com for more on the film, youtube.com/watch?v=wRfiUfv9NWY to see the official trailer… and urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hesher for some great definitions of the word “hesher!”

Hector Aguilar, Jr. Creates Horror Masks Like No Other By Alex Kantarelis

Horror nerds would love a job like this. Worcester’s Hector Aguilar, Jr. spends his days working on highly detailed display masks for a variety of clients, including businesses and private collectors. His designs dominated the Halloween Outlet 2011 product line, and most recently he’s been working with Trick or Treat Studios on their 2013 line. Aguilar explains that creating masks as detailed and horrific as his can be an exhaustingly complicated and tedious process. The artist spends countless hours designing, sculpting, and painting each mask. It all starts with a slab of clay and an idea. Aguilar perfectly sculpts the clay into the shape he needs, and uses the sculpture to create a mold. The molding process is similar to making a Jello mold, but with Latex instead. After removing the latex from the mold, the final step is painting, which is where the mask really comes to life (or, death, depending on how gory things get!). Aguilar got into things a few years ago, when he was studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. “I got into it kind of by accident,” he remembered. The final project in his sculpting class was to create a fantasy head. Aguilar’s creative mind took off, and it was then that he realized he had a knack for this type of art. The next logical step was to attend Tom Savini’s school in Pennsylvania. For those of you who don’t know, Tom Savini is considered to be the grandfather of special effects make-up and did the effects for Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow, Friday the 13th and about every other gory movie you can think of ~ and he has

acted in almost all of them as well (remember “Sex Machine” from From Dusk ‘Til Dawn? That’s Savini!). Without him, a lot of movies would have been a lot more boring. Under Savini’s watch, Aguilar learned all the details of high detail Latex work and sculpting, and discovered that it wasn’t just a walk in the park. “I didn’t realize how tough this profession really is,” he said. But the being in that environment taught him how to work hard for himself, and motivated him to start his own business when he got home. “I had an interview for Sears and I didn’t want to do that so I blew it off and spent the day putting together a portfolio.” It was that first portfolio that landed him a job with Worcester’s Halloween Outlet, which kept him busy for a full year. One thing Aguilar enjoys about his profession is the fact that special degrees and certifications are not required: “This is probably one of the only businesses where you can become a wealthy by just being great. You don’t need a piece of paper saying you went to some school,” he said. When he’s not creating his art, he is spreading the wealth by teaching classes in Worcester and Fitchburg at the art museums of each city. For people interested in learning how to create their own masks and sculptures, get in contact with either of the museums. DINING & ENTERTAINING

By Bernie Whitmore Why are there so few dining alternatives in West Boylston? It’s not for lack of effort...several attempts to succeed at 185 West Boylston Street alone have failed in the past few years. And now a new contender, The Mill, has thrown its hat into the ring with a menu of American Comfort, Italian-American and ~ a welcome surprise ~ smokehouse entrees.

The Mill Restaurant and Lounge 185 West Boylston St. West Boylston 774-261-8585 www.themill185.com

When one enters The Mill, the dominant features are a large bar and lounge area. Satellite dining rooms open onto it and provide intimate areas for enjoying a meal. The overall interior design is shades of caramel and the walls are hung with contrasting artwork. We arrived at The Mill early one evening when the weather was still warm and were easily convinced to sit on the front deck. After introducing herself, Stephanie took our drink orders and fielded questions about the menu. She explained that they’d added a big smoker out back in the kitchen. Stephanie immediately impressed me as knowledgeable and proud of The Mill. We were off to a very good start. Our dining began with The Mill’s Smoked Salmon, an appetizer my dining companion and I decided to share. The menu described it as smoke-baked and it turned out to be a long, narrow fillet served with crunchy coleslaw. A glaze of smoky flavor locked in the salmon’s flavor and juices; the tender meat flaked apart as we attacked both ends of the filet. It came with a mayonnaise-based remoulade sauce, but I’m a purist when it comes to these things ~ unless a condiment is outrageously exceptional, I prefer to enjoy my meal without saucy amplification. The remoulade was not exceptional; the salmon was. Mulling over the American Comfort part of the menu, my friend couldn’t make a decision. Steak tips? Meatloaf? Shepard’s pie [sic]? Stephanie recommended

38 THEPULSEMAG.COM | OCT. 2011

their Shepard’s Pie and raved about it ‘til I asked if it were worthy of a throwdown with the famous restaurant up the street. “Throwdown? We’d win!” she exclaimed. My friend decided to find out for himself.

Shepherd’s pie is a dish the Irish invented to use leftover mutton and, no surprise, potatoes. The Mill uses a modern approach and layers garlic mashed potatoes over ground beef over peas and corn. It comes piping hot in an oval baking dish topped with crossed asparagus spears. Bring on the competition! With just the right amount of pepper it was seasoned correctly and should be perfect in the approaching cooler months. My entrée, Andouille & Chicken Combo, took me deeper into The Mill’s smokehouse fare. If you’ve ever had jambalaya, in all likelihood you’ve had andouille sausage ~ it’s spicy and meant to be smoked and it was, on this dish, the star attraction. The boneless breast of chicken had mild smoky flavor but was overshadowed by the little pot of spicy baked beans. Based upon the beans’ Kansas City-style barbeque sauce, I’d return to The Mill to try their Pulled Pork or Rack of Ribs plates. We finished by sharing a wedge of The Mill’s own Chocolate Fantasy Cake. Thick chocolate mousse topped a layer of moist chocolate cake, all drizzled with white chocolate sauce. For those fond of gooey, chocolatey richness, order the Fantasy and don’t share! It was that good. From start to finish, I’m pulling for The Mill Restaurant. Their service staff is upbeat and engaged; the menu has a lot of basic fare but is peppered with some unusual items that set them apart. In short, there are plenty of reasons for a return visit.

Hot & Now By Paul Giorgio The Shrewsbury Street Area Merchants Association will host its second annual OktoberFest on Sunday, October 9 ~ the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend ~ at 6pm. Several of Shrewsbury Street’s restaurants will be cooking up German food for the occasion and there will be lots of music. Come down to Shrewsbury Street and let Schwarze Schafe, an authentic German Oom Pah band who will be performing at various venues along the street, entertain you; if you’ve never seen this band perform in their period customers, you’re in for a real treat ~ nothing goes better with German food than Bavarian music. Last year, over 1,000 people came down to Shrewsbury Street for one of the only OktoberFests in the area; several of the restaurants hosted outdoor parties featuring Oktoberfest beers produced by Wachusett, Harpoon and Sam Adam Breweries, and although some of the establishments usually feature Italian food, they had no problem serving up delicious knockwurst, potato salad, sauerkraut and soft pretzels. To find a list of restaurants participating this year, visit www.ShrewsburystreetOktoberfest.com. Sponsors for the event include Leominster Credit Union (located on Shrewsbury Street) and Atlas Distributors, who distribute Wachusett, Harpoon and Sam Adams beers. Among the media sponsors are WCRN, WXLO, The Pike, and Oldies 98.5 as well as Pulse magazine and TasteWorcester.com.

MOVIN’ ON UP. Joey’s Bar and Grille, a fixture on Worcester’s Mill Street, will be moving to 344 Chandler Street in the space that once housed The Struck . Owners Joey and Erin Rovezzi hope to have their new and larger restaurant open by late October. Joey’s has a lively bar scene and great food. With the opening of Joey’s, the West Side of Worcester is finally getting more of the restaurants it deserves. We reported last month that Café Espresso is also moving to Chandler Street. It will be diagonally opposite the new Joey’s Bar & Grille. SPEAKING OF CHANDLER STREET. Worcester House of Pizza has taken over the space that was occupied for a brief time by the Firewood Café at 222 Chandler Street. This primo location is near Clark and Worcester State University. MAI TAI OPENS. Mai Tai opened in the middle of September on Worcester’s Green Street in the heart of the Canal District. They offer a limited menu of Chinese appetizers and sushi. JUST LIKE SHANGRI LA. A new oasis of dining will open shortly in downtown Worcester. Shangri La, a Chinese restaurant featuring Szechuan and Cantonese cooking as well as a full sushi bar, will open in the space that housed Ping’s Garden for over twenty years. Owner Eric Giang hopes to have the renovations completed for a November opening. Giang and his partner own Peach Garden in Quincy and C.J. Cuisine in Randolph. In addition to food, they will offer a full bar, DJs and karaoke. WORCESTER RUNS ON DUNKIN. Word has it that John Battista, owner of most of the Dunkin Donut franchises in Central MA, recently purchased the former Edward Buick building on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street. Our spies tell us that he is planning to open an upscale Italian restaurant and pizzeria. Plans call for him to import a large wood-fired pizza oven from Italy. The new restaurant will be directly across the street from VIA. IN OTHER SHREWSBURY STREET NEWS. The Parkway Diner, which has undergone extensive renovations and is now called the Parkway Restaurant & Bar, will be offering outdoor dining. The dining room has been completely redone and numerous large flat screens have been added. FINDING HOLDEN. Ethan’s Family Restaurant recently opened in the space that housed La Bussola and, before that, The Jefferson House. The eatery is owned by Johnson Joseph, who also serves as chef. The menu is American and family-friendly. 86 86ed. 86 Winter Street an American Bistro ~ located at 65 Water Street in Worcester’s Canal District ~ closed in the middle of September. No further information was available. NEW MENU AT THE RHINO. Chef Mark Hawley has changed the menu at Shrewsbury Street’s Flying Rhino Café. His semi -annual change includes a few healthy items ~ “Woo Food” ~ collaborated upon by three last year medical students. These are healthy alternatives on the menu, including some older grains like brown and black rice and faro as starches. Additionally, there will be more seasonal items. Entrees include short ribs with red wine sauce over butternut orzo, sirloin au poivre, veal osso bucco over mushroom risotto, and a Statler chicken breast over faro.

Voodoo Tiki Tequila

Unleash Your Inner Zombie This Halloween By Rick Garner

Muertos Vivientos (“The Living Dead”) is a tequila take on the classic 1934 Zombie recipe.

Candy-inspired cocktail it would be these folks, but the response was actually quite positive.

It’s earned the tag line “Don’t Bury Me. I’m Not Done Drinking Yet…”

The first thing you’ll notice is the aroma of cotton candy from the combination of 100% blue agave, all natural Blue Dragon Blue Raspberry and Kiwi Infused Tequila and real cotton candy. The presentation featuring two glasses ~ and the guest getting to pour the cocktail over Cotton Candy and ice ~ is a fun and visually appealing touch.

This amazing and mind numbing elixir is the tequila equivalent of the famous Zombie Cocktail made of fruit juices, liqueurs, and various rums, so named for its perceived effects upon the drinker. The legendary cocktail was invented in 1934 by Ernest Raymond BeaumontGannt of Hollywood ~ famously known as Don the Beachcomber. It was popularized soon afterwards at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Legend has it that Donn Beach originally concocted the Zombie to help a hung-over customer get through a business meeting. He returned several days later to complain that he had been turned into a zombie for his entire trip. Its smooth, fruity taste works to conceal its extremely high alcoholic content. Don the Beachcomber restaurants reportedly limited their customers to “Only Two Zombies Per Customer” ~ only adding to the dangerous allure and mystique. Anything with such a sexy and mythic history such as the Zombie Cocktail is just begging for a tequila update. However, Donn Beach was very cautious with the recipes of his original cocktails. His instructions for his bartenders contained coded references to ingredients, the contents of which were only known to him. Not so with Muertos Vivientos. The complete recipe, and Donn’s original recipe, are reveled below.

M

Now the cocktail is certainly sweet ~ Hello, it has “Cotton Candy” in the name ~ but this is not a cheap tequila masked with flavor. This is ultra premium Voodoo Tiki Infused Tequila 100% Blue Agave, all natural with no artificial colors. The smell aids in capturing the cotton candy sensibility in your mouth; when the liquid hits your lips you will feel as if you are eating liquid Cotton Candy…and then wait for the images of the grand old carnival/freak days to kick in!

PS ~ Insanely dangerous rides and fixed carnival games optional.

OODOO TIKI CARNIVAL COTTON CANDY 1.5 oz Voodoo Tiki Blue Dragon Blue Raspberry and Kiwi Infused Tequila 1 oz Vanilla Syrup 1.5 oz Club Soda 1/2 Cup by Volume Cotton Candy

UERTOS VIVIENTOS, THE LIVING DEAD 2 Ounces Voodoo Tiki Añejo Tequila 1 Ounce Fresh Lime Juice 2 Ounces grapefruit Juice 1 Ounce Falernum 3/4 Ounce Cherry Herring or Maraschino Liqueur 4 drops Pomegranate Syrup 2 Dash of Angostura Bitters Step One: Combine all ingredients in a highball glass and shake with ice. Step Two: (optional) Place a 1/2 lime flipped inside out on top. Add 1/2 ounce high proof Demerera Rum. Ignite. Serve flaming.

Combine the liquid ingredients in a small cocktail shaker and stir ~ do not shake ~ gently so as not to lose the carbonation. Fill a bowl glass, such as a red wine glass with ice, leaving about a 1/2 inch at the top for the cotton candy, which should be place to be above the rim of the glass as pictured. Include a straw down the center to appear like a cotton candy stick. Serve allowing the recipient to pour the liquids over the cotton candy and ice.

SPORTS & FITNESS

Heart of the Matter:

Worcester Native Finds Passion in CrossFit AC By Kim Dunbar Dino Patramanis has never been the biggest guy, but that’s never stopped him from achieving his dreams. “It’s all about how much passion you have and what’s in your heart,” said Patramanis, owner of CrossFit AC in Auburn. The 27-year-old Worcester native has a track record of following his own advice: at 17, he left high school to play professional soccer in Italy, earning his GED along the way. After playing in Italy for five years, Patramanis worked as a personal trainer and spent time teaching kids at IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida. It was here that Patramanis discovered CrossFit, a strength and conditioning workout that includes all aspects of fitness like agility, speed and endurance. “I became addicted,” said Patramanis. “CrossFit is popular because it’s filled with variety. Working out at a regular gym, people do the same thing over and over and they don’t notice any changes in the body. They plateau because the body doesn’t change after it gets used to doing something. It doesn’t challenge you the way CrossFit does.” Patramanis said CrossFit is for those who have trouble getting motivated at regular gyms because “…it’s a different workout every single day” and scalable to individual abilities. “You do what you can do,” he said. “Like anything in life, if you don’t put work in, you won’t get anything out of it. You get what you put in.”

44 THEPULSEMAG.COM | OCT. 2011

Patramanis, who left the Sunshine State to pursue his Bachelor’s degree in Health Science from Worcester State, graduated in May 2010 and opened CrossFit AC last February with the help of his dad, Perry, a trainer with more than 36 years of experience, and his best friend, Nick Tomasetta. Patramanis takes pride in knowing CrossFit AC is more of an everyday gym where people come to train, not compete with each other. “Don’t be intimidated,” he said. “Me, Nick and my dad, we’re here for you. We want you to be happy and get what you want out of it. We take it to heart. It’s more than a job.” For Patramanis, who sometimes spends 18 hours a day working at the gym, it’s a lifestyle. “If you want a good workout, this is the place to be,” he said. “I’ve tried all workouts, and I’ll never go back to anything else.” Even though Patramanis has exceeded his initial goals with CrossFit AC ~ classes and membership have increased so much that he purchased a bigger space in Millbury which will open this winter ~ the trainer is still a student himself. “I’m always pushing myself to do more,” he said. “I’m struggling and huffing and puffing just like the person next to me. Everyone’s human.” The rest is passion and heart. For more information, check out http://crossfit-ac.com.

Haunted Shred-O-Rama Not for the Faint of Heart By Craig Linberg

Ah, October ~ and the chance to write about two of my favorite things: Halloween and myself (in no particular order, of course). Most of you reading this column month to month probably go to your gym or studio of choice somewhat regularly. Said gym or studio probably offers indoor cycling classes commonly known as “Spinning” ~ a fun, moderately challenging, predictable workout experience. This is not that class. Haunted Shred-O-Rama™ is the spawn of my two great loves, fitness and scary movies. An experienced group exercise instructor, I am always looking for ways to keep things challenging and interesting. I struggled with that from time to time because of what’s considered “acceptable” …and then one day a voice inside me said, “Hey dummy, you own the place…do what you want!” And so I did. Shredder is the Optimal Performance Center’s clever name for indoor cycling; Haunted Shred-O-Rama™ is my version of Shredder. It combines my passion for heavy music, horror movies and just a touch of self-aggrandizing. The music is always heavy, driving, motivating…seamlessly mixed with movie sound bytes and a couple of other surprises along the way. Each mix even has its own unique name and theme like “Shriek Fest Scare-A-Go-Go,” a faster, sprint style ride, and “Sunset on Planet X,” a high-tension grind that challenges your strength as well as your endurance. Then there’s the 42” HD monitor centered between two revolving, multi-colored club lights synced to the beat of the music. The monitor plays movie trailers from classic…and not so classic…horror and sci-fi films from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Some of the material can be a little, shall we say, risqué, but is there as entertainment or art, if you will, and a distraction from the tortures of the actual ride…which I conduct in a homemade thermal skeleton shirt, face mask and gloves. Originally worn as an intimidation tool, the outfit became a symbol of what can be achieved once you put perceived comfort levels aside. If I can complete the ride in this get up, then you have nothing to complain about in your tank tops and t-shirts.

All the flash and Barnum-esque hoopla aside, what truly separates Haunted Shred-O-Rama™ and Shredder from other indoor cycling classes is the workout. “I’ve taken many spin classes in the past and Shredder is by far the most challenging,” says OPC member Christa Rebidue. “The music and lights set a dark and sinister mood, while Craig takes you on a ride that pushes you to the limit. It is a ride like no other!” As a wise man once said, “There’s a big difference between what you want to do and what you can do…you are here to do the latter.”

ART & CULTURE

The Gravestone Girls By Tine Roycroft

The Gravestone Girls are more than your typical gals ~ they’re sassy, educated artisans who share a deep respect for history and a great sense of adventure. Their idea of a perfect day includes passing time in cemeteries and “keeping the dead alive.” “We create artwork using the images carved on gravestones,” explains Worcester’s Brenda Sullivan. With her faithful friends and fellow headstone honeys ~ Maggie White and Melissa Anderson ~ Sullivan finds both gorgeous and downright spooky cemetery design work and uses them (without harming them) to create rubbings, castings, magnets and much more. “Nothing says ‘Happy Birthday’ or ‘Merry Christmas’ like a gravestone!” Sullivan laughs as she reminisces on how the Gravestone Girls came to be. “The three of us would bring home these fantastic rubbings from cemeteries and then we started making them into pieces of art. So people started receiving them as gifts. And they caught on!” After piquing the interest of friends and family, the trio was inspired to take part in local craft shows. For over 15 years now, the Girls have been doing what they love and teaching the masses along the way. “We’re educators too,” Sullivan, who received her Art History education at Assumption College, explains. “I give public presentations about cemetery art, history and symbolism: why we have these particular images on the gravestones, why cemeteries look the way they do, why the gravestones are shaped and colored the way they are, and so forth.” According to Sullivan, one of the many perks of her job is

48 THEPULSEMAG.COM | OCT. 2011

discovering the fascinating (and sometimes terrifying) stories behind each stone. For example, on a recent trip to Northhampton, she found a headstone for a brother and sister who had both been struck by lightning. “A lot of the time, information on how the person died is put there right on the stone. It can be a nod to the tragedy and the loss of life, but it’s a warning of our mortality, too,” Sullivan says. “’We’ve found people crushed by houses, killed by falling trees, and people who have fallen off of bridges.” Sullivan’s interest in cemeteries began in her childhood when her mother and grandmother took her along when they tended to their family burial plot. The older women would be planting flowers and trimming weeds while the little girl would be running through the rows of stones with pieces of paper, looking for fancy symbols from which to create rubbings. “I think my mother taught me about rubbings primarily to keep me out of her hair,” Sullivan says. And although Sullivan and the Gravestone Girls might be older now, they have no intention of ever straying from their beloved graveyards or the stories and art they find there. For more info, go to www.gravestonegirls.com.

Suki’s Dareware Dare to Make a

Statement This Halloween...and Beyond! By Katey Khaos

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to start planning some killer parties ~ and what’s the most important element? The outfit, of course! Instead of buying an overexpensive, generic sexy-something-or-other, why not look sexy and stylish with a piece from Suki’s Dareware collection? Webster, MA’s Suki Jones, the sole creator of Suki’s Dareware, has taken the desire for original design to a whole new level! Since 2006, Jones has been creating and designing clothing that she says, “...best showcases women who are comfortable with their sexuality and want original designs not easily forgotten.” Each piece is not only thought up and designed by Jones herself, but also hand-crafted as well, making each Dareware piece 100% original ~ you won’t find anyone else rockin’ the same design as you, which is a hard guarantee to make nowadays! Jones’ designs cater to all sorts of occasions; think unique wedding gowns, club attire, fetish wear, costumes, and even everyday statement pieces. Why the vast range? Jones’ mission for her designs is to “...make the world a sexier place, one outfit at a time.”

Suki’s Dareware has been featured in numerous clubs as well as at countless fashions shows: “I enjoy seeing more and more of my work in the clubs when I do my fashion shows and I am looking forward to getting more of my work into local boutiques,” Jones explains. Speaking of boutiques, how much would it cost to own a piece of this awesome clothing? It depends on a few things, including style, materials, and time. Keeping that in mind, Jones does her best to keep her prices reasonable. “Great and original fashion should not belong solely to the ultra-rich,” she says. For more information about Suki’s Dareware and to check out more photos of her work, check out www.myspace.com/sukisdareware or www.facebook.com/sukisdareware!

COLLEGE

Co-Author of Bestselling Book FREAKONOMICS Comes to Worcester! By Cristal Steuer Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime? You can find the answers to those questions and a whole lot more in the popular book series FREAKONOMICS and SUPERFREAKONOMICS. One of the co-authors, Steven Levitt, will be in town this month to give the 46th Annual Hanify-Howland Memorial Lecture at the College of the Holy Cross. “I’m embarrassed to admit it, but the only reason we wrote Freakonomics was because the publisher offered us too much money to refuse,” shares Levitt. “We didn’t think for a second anyone would want to read it. We were shocked.” Shocked, indeed. FREAKONOMICS hit the bestseller lists on its first day in print and has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. The book demonstrates different economic theories. “Most of what we do is pretty simple, but we start by asking different questions, or looking at problems differently,” shares Levitt. “There is no reason that anyone else couldn’t do the same thing. But if we fail at that goal, we hope to at least entertain.” The theory that surprised him the most? “Without a doubt it was the linkage between legalized abortion in the 1970s and the decline in crime in the 1990s. It is a theory that makes sense and is supported by reams of evidence, but it is so jarring and counter-intuitive that it is hard to wrap one’s head around,” explains Levitt.

His books get a lot of praise, but they also have their critics. “I’ve been heavily criticized for arguing that child car seats don’t work any better than adult seat belts in protecting kids,” he says. “The evidence is overwhelmingly in my favor on that one, but no one seems to care about the evidence.” Even though the book series has taken off, Levitt’s first job is teaching. He is an economics professor at the University of Chicago. “On the first day of class I tell my students they are adults and it is their choice whether they want to come to class, or do the readings,” he explains. “I also invite them to surf the internet while I lecture...I figure if I can’t give good enough lectures that they want to pay attention, I’m not doing my job.” In 2004, he was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, which recognizes the most influential economist in America under the age of 40. More recently, he was named one of Time magazine’s “100 People Who Shape Our World.” No stranger to Massachusetts, Levitt did his undergrad work at Harvard and received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. “In a decade in and around Boston, I never had a car. I always took the subway,” he remembers. The lecture will be held October 6 at 8 p.m. in the Hogan Campus Center Ballroom at Holy Cross. It is free and open to the public.
