alloween is over and we’re looking forward to the fireworks events going on this month. Of course, many poignant Remembrance events are taking place too, which are especially touching with so much unrest around the world.

We were delighted to hear that MK Food Bank did it! More than 102,000 cans of food laid in a line around Campbell Park is now officially a new Guinness world record. Local families can now continue to benefit from their much needed support this winter. Well done everyone. It’s a good time of year for some fundraising and fun. There’s Camphill MK’s Christmas jumper fun run on 2nd December in support of adults with learning disabilities. There’s also the ever-popular Willen Hospice Santa Dash on the 17th , so dust off your Santa suit.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window

once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. any of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially since we have had more time at home. But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.

hether you’re up for a run, a shuffle, or a walk, the event will raise vital funds for Camphill MK. The charity invites the community to dig out their finest Christmas jumpers and sign up for the fun, familyfriendly 1-mile or slightly longer 5K route. Both routes start and finish in the scenic Willen Park at Camphill MK. Entry fee starts from £10 and includes a special handmade medal created by residents in Camphill MK’s ceramic workshop. Refreshments will be made in the onsite vegetarian Café including warm drinks, soft drinks, and mince pies, which are available to purchase at the finish. A secure bag drop will also be provided. Schools and organisations can also hold their own ‘Jumper Jaunt’ to raise money for Camphill MK. To get involved, simply pick a date, tell your group to wear their Christmas jumpers on that date and take part in either a 1-mile or 5-km ‘jaunt’. They will not have to pay an entry fee to take part, but participants will be asked to either donate per person or raise funds through sponsorship. Every penny raised will contribute to sustaining the charitable community that provides support to adults with learning disabilities, as well as those who stand by them.

WILLEN HOSPICE

Why Sue is supporting Willen Hospice this Christmas

M

any Milton Keynes families will know someone who has been cared for by Willen Hospice. Providing free, specialist end-of-life care and services, the hospice only receives 15% of its running costs from ongoing NHS funding. The rest is met through fundraising – mostly the generosity and commitment of local supporters. This Christmas, MK resident Sue is sharing the story of her mum’s experience at the hospice to help raise vital donations. She’s passionate about making sure other local families get the same life-changing support her family did. “When my mum, Anne, died on Christmas Day in 2019, I thought Christmas would never be the same again,” says Sue. “The first sign of her illness was a sore tongue. Eventually, she was diagnosed with tongue cancer which progressed very quickly. We were trying to look after Mum at home, but Willen Hospice’s community team, Willen at Home, suggested it was time she moved to the In-Patient Unit. “While Mum was looked after at the hospice, we were cared for as well. We had time to spend with her without having to worry about all the day-today things that we might have worried about if she’d been at home. I had visited people at the hospice before and found it a beautiful environment, but it was particularly special at Christmas time. There were staff who wanted to work at Christmas. It just felt amazing to think that they were willing to give up their time with their family to help support everybody else. “Mum dying at the Hospice has meant that it’s an even more special place for my family and I now. It’s somewhere that we can come and think of Mum, and somewhere that I really feel her presence – we all do. Without generous donations from supporters, the hospice wouldn’t have been available for my mum and it wouldn’t have been available for anybody else who needed it. Mum was just one of many, many local people who have been cared for there.” To watch a video of Sue’s story and read more about Willen Hospice’s work at Christmas, visit www.willen-hospice.org.uk/appeal uk.

New community hub will improve support for patients, says hospice

new new palliative care community hub at Willen Hospice will improve care and quality of life for those who have a life-limiting condition and support their carers and loved ones. The new Hub provides an advice and support line, open 24 hours a day. The service will support patients both on discharge from hospital and at home and will enable Willen Hospice to reach a larger number of patients more quickly. The hospice is the only provider of specialist palliative nursing in Milton Keynes. “We know from experience that when we can intervene earlier and support someone needing palliative care, we can improve their quality of life,” says Willen at Home’s lead nurse Amy Malburn, who manages the hub. “Being involved at an earlier stage makes it much easier for us to identify when someone is in crisis.” Intervention can be as simple as listening to someone’s concerns and providing support. “It can be

Says Jackie Young, the hospice’s associate director of nursing: “This new way for our community to access expert help is of huge benefit to the city. Patients are now living longer through better care and access to treatment so they often require more complex care relating to longer-term treatment, which is why the new Palliative Care Community Hub is so crucial.” The hub is backed by the Bedford, Luton and Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning Group and has funding for the next 12 months. Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust! These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords

are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been

referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

INTERVIEW

‘I suffer from the same prejudices as everyone else does’

Pic: Decca Records

Damian Lewis is one of our best loved actors, but his current role sees him stepping out of the screen and onto the musical stage, as he realises a long held dream. As he prepares to visit the new city, he talks with Pulse’s Sammy Jones about swapping acting for truthful sounds. 14

T

he album, Mission Creep, was released to glowing reviews earlier this year. ‘It’s an album that is real and warm and moody,’ I say. “That’s nice, good... that is what we were hoping it would sound like,” Damian says, “I definitely wanted it to have that quite present feel – that you feel you are in the room with us.

November 2023 | MK Pulse Magazine | 32,000 Copies delivered every month door to door across Milton Keynes

INTERVIEW “We recorded on tape, we didn’t do it digitally, and I think a lot of those takes are actually live takes of me singing with the band on some of those songs. “It has got that ‘in the room’ feel – I wanted that sort of sense that you found us down the end of the bar, playing by the piano.” As an actor, that pedigree of his has long been assured. But as a musician new to the fold? That’s something different. Although in reality, music has always been a passion. Before finding fame as a thespian, Damian had busked his way through continental Europe. Music is in his veins, and you can hear the passion in the album. Nonetheless, might debuting his music feel more of a pressure than the acting? “Actually, the struggle is that I am an actor that’s well known,” he considers, “It might get people through the door out of curiosity, initially, but to answer your question in a slightly off centre way, being a well-known actor, once you’ve convinced people that it’s not rubbish, and it’s not cynical, that it’s genuine and authentic and musically and lyrically, dare I say it myself, strong and it holds up, then you’ve got to turn people into a consumer. That’s quite a difficult thing. “People might say, ‘Damian Lewis made Damian is aiming for an ‘an upbeat, bluesy, rock n roll singer songwriter type show’ an album, apparently it’s not bad,’ but actually getting people to take you seriously enough that they might go and buy it and someone’s hero because I played Dick Winters, like you as a musician instead of an actor? it’s a bit odd sitting in Milton Keynes having Dick That’s harder, yeah. A band of musical aces was assembled to breathe life into the sounds - many of them had worked with Smith in Kansas Smitty’s House Band. They are jazz players, too. It makes The Stables, founded by jazz royalty Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine, the perfect little gig haunt for his band, a fact not lost on Damian. “What a brilliant, brilliant legacy to have,” he says of the Danworth-Laine creation, “...you are right to point out that my band, although they play a lot of music, are jazzers. It gives that little inflection to the evening in a fun way.” Take your seat at the Wavendon venue and you’ll be met by ‘a really fun show’, Damian assures. “It’s not sombre, it’s not serious and it’s not moody, there are definitely some sombre balladic moments in there, but it is an upbeat, bluesy, rock n roll singer songwriter type show. It’s a fun hour and a half,” he suggests, “I hope you agree, or you’ll be going to the trade descriptions office!” > Damian Lewis plays The Stables at Wavendon on Monday, November 6. elling your property at auction can seem like a daunting prospect that should be left to professionals. However, it is becoming increasingly popular and can be a good option if you are looking for a quick sale, or the property you are trying to sell has issues which may put off traditional buyers, such as being run down, having title problems or being otherwise unmortgageable.

two. Potential buyers will bid on the property, and the highest bidder will be legally bound to purchase the property as long as the reserve price has been met.

What is the auction sale process? The auction house you have chosen will value the property and agree the reserve and guide price with you. Typically, the property will be entered into an auction around 4 weeks after instructing the auction house. This is to allow time for them to advertise the property and provide any potential buyers with the legal pack (see below) in advance of the auction.

• Title information for the property, • Results of standard searches, • Special conditions of sale, • Property information form and fittings & contents form • EPC, • Management pack (if the property is leasehold), and • Any other relevant documents.

any enquiries being raised after the auction. Any material defects or issues with the property must also be disclosed at this point. The buyer cannot withdraw from the purchase after this point without losing their deposit. Heald Solicitors are experienced at selling all types of properties at auction and would be happy to help. We are also happy to help with auction purchases including reviewing legal packs prior to the auction.

orn and raised in Milton Keynes, Chloe has been writing songs since she was eight and performing since she was 14. Now 20 and in her final year of a music degree, she is preparing to take her singing career to the next level. Chloe is now 20 and in her final year of a music degree at Leeds. Music is her career ambition and she has been performing in the city’s bars and clubs as a solo artist and latterly with university friends as her band members. “My music career has been a slow burner, for sure,” she says. “I love performing live but getting a full-time band is difficult at uni. Fortunately I’ve got four or five uni mates helping, which is a big thing.” Her career moved up several gears when, after uploading Have You Ever Been So High? to the BBC Introducing website, the song was picked for a show and has been streaming since late August. “That was awesome in terms of getting my career off the ground,” says Chloe. “It was so nice for me to know that someone who listens to music for a living thought that my music was worth playing on the radio.” At the last count, the number of times the song has streamed across the various channels - YouTube, Spotify, iTunes - has topped 10,000. “That makes me so happy,” she says.

‘My music career has been a slow burner, for sure’ Her debut single Have You Ever Felt So High? has hit 10,000 streams after being featured on the BBC Introducing radio show. Now Chloe Wilson’s music career is set to take off.

Plans to release a second single are, says Chloe, still under wraps. But she realises that for her career to develop the way she wants, she needs professional support. “I’m a bit of a control freak but I’m getting to a point in my career where I’m seeking some kind of management support.

A towering

success

This month we take a look at one of the new city's biggest successes – a firm that is reaching dizzying heights in every sense of the word, and a business that has left its mark here at the Museum. Sammy Jones discovered more about the Niftylift story from its chairman and founder, Roger Bowden.

N

iftylift is one of Europe’s largest mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) manufacturers and while the business is anchored in these parts, it operates worldwide. “We specialise in compact, low-weight articulating booms that offer maximum performance with minimal environmental impact,” Roger says, explaining his business in relatively simple terms. The name ‘Nifty’ has synonyms including ‘particularly good, skilful, or effective” and ‘attractive and stylish’ – which all perfectly sum up what Roger wants to achieve with every lift the company designs: “Combining the two names seemed the perfect solution,” Roger recalled. Before Niftylift, he ran an MEWP in Bedfordshire, but he didn’t feel the products were good enough, and so Roger decided to make and build his own. “After successfully manufacturing machines for the rental fleet, I realised I could sell them to other rental companies, and the idea for Niftylift was born.” The move to Milton Keynes from Bedfordshire wasn’t such a big leap geographically, but it made perfect business sense. “Milton Keynes is situated in the middle of the country and offers excellent transport links to the rest of the UK. In the past, it provided 20

opportunities for us to invest in the area by purchasing land and building the facilities we needed to grow and compete in the global marketplace,” Roger explained, “It is also a popular place to live, and we benefit from the growing talent pool that Milton Keynes offers. “In the future, we hope the new city will continue to support our desire to invest in the city so that we can continue to grow and sustain an ever-increasing Milton Keynes workforce.” Since that move here in 1988 the business has gone from strength to strength. Today it employs a worldwide staff force in excess of 600 people – 500 of those in Milton Keynes. In the mid-1990s Niftylift reached into the US market, which presented a massive opportunity for the company to increase sales growth. But there were challenges too: “There are cultural and technological differences to the European market and logistical challenges to selling into a large yet geographically distant market. We met these challenges by investing in local expertise with a US-based sales and distribution team and facilities to allow us to support our product range in the States and deliver the level of customer service they required.” What are the traits that keep Niftylift at the forefront of the industry in today’s bustling market?

The original Niftylift 120 back in 1985

Niftylift’s ‘Christmas tree’

“We offer market-leading reach performance from compact, low-weight chassis,” is the easy reply, “Their low weight allows Niftylift to use smaller, more efficient engines, and together with the development of greener options, such as Hybrid and All-Electric power sources, we are able to minimise the environmental impact. “Niftylift achieves this high performance by training and developing our highly skilled expert staff, adopting the latest computer design technology, and consistent investment in research and development.”

talented people who share the same drive to excel as your own, you can achieve amazing things as a team,” he says with certainty. In 2025 the company will mark its 40th anniversary, and plans are already being drawn up to celebrate in style. What giddy heights does Roger hope the company will have achieved in another four decades? “I hope we’ll still be doing what we do now The present day Niftylift HQ at Shenley Wood - employing talented local people to design and build the best MEWPs in the world and Roger considers a sustainable growth strategy, investing in the facilities, technology and that ongoing investment and a focus on resources they need to be able to do so.” innovation as all key cogs in Niftylift’s success. As someone who has attained huge success Roger’s impact in business hasn’t gone in the business world, what advice would unnoticed – he is the recipient of a Lifetime Roger offer to anyone who dreams of following Achievement Award and two Queen’s Awards his lead? for Enterprise. He certainly can’t have envisaged “Start with a good idea. Be prepared to work getting his hands on those when he was hard… very hard, and surround yourself with tinkering around in his first workspace - a the best people you can find! That and a bit of humble shed! luck and anything is possible,” he suggests. “I never dreamed we would achieve our The brand really is a big community player too success, but when you surround yourself with – putting itself at the heart of the community. “We understand the importance of Niftylift being a positive presence in this community. Our new headquarters in Shenley Wood is an excellent example of this – it is built to the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology) Excellent standard, with a very high environmental performance, and has been designed to complement its surroundings. “We also like to make Receiving the Queen’s Award seasonal additions to for Enterprise in 2013 our signage and flags to

recognise and celebrate events and occasions that matter to the community, something we receive a lot of positive feedback on, and our giant Christmas tree has become an essential part of Milton Keynes’ festive celebrations since we first displayed it in 2015,” Roger said. “We take great pleasure in doing these things for our staff, their families and our neighbours, and we also understand the importance of connecting with future generations.” Niftylift also offers a STEM program, working closely with schools in the area to promote STEM in the classroom.” At Milton Keynes Museum, work has started on its new gallery, which will tell the modern day history of the new city – and Niftylift has delivered the first interactive exhibit which is proving to be particularly popular with visitors. “People have questioned the inclusion of industries and businesses in a gallery about Milton Keynes but we think it is important to include the stories of where we spend so much of our lives and are essential for the local economy,” Museum director Bill Griffiths said. “To have an interactive exhibit, allowing visitors to operate a Niftylift, fits in with the rest of the Museum and is a really great attraction. We are grateful to Roger and his top team for tailor-making a Niftylift just for us.” Roger is every bit as thrilled for his business to be a part of the Museum’s offering as Bill is to have them there: “The idea for the MK Museum exhibit came from conversations with Bill, and we are very grateful to him for offering us the opportunity,” Roger said. “We see it as a natural extension of our STEM program and a way for us to reach a wider audience of young people. “We want to show future generations, via fun and engaging interactions, where an interest in STEM subjects can lead them - hopefully, to a successful, fulfilling career with Niftylift!” he added.

Milton Keynes Museum is one of the best interactive museums, a perfect outing for all ages, staffed by friendly volunteers, and highly recommended by visitors on TripAdvisor. OUTDOOR EVENTS

O

lney’s Dickens of a Christmas is a staple on the annual calendar – a one-day event that sees the town flooded with visitors. This year, the Victorian themed day falls on Sunday, December 3. Stallholders dress in the attire of the era and sell their wares in the Market Place and along the High Street with plenty of opportunity for you to seek out those stocking fillers, Crimbo gifts and treats. The Olney Centre will open its doors too, with craft fairs to tempt you. The old fashioned fair, street organ entertainers and Olney Brass Band will bring more colour and sounds to the day. At the Cowper & Newton Museum, the courtyard will be open to serve mulled wine, hot chocolate and tea and coffee (10am-4pm) and entertainment in the garden will run at midday, 2pm and 3pm. With the event proving such a hit, park and ride is a wise option for motorists – a service will run from Emberton Park and the Yardley Road Industrial Estate.

Olney will be having its usual Dickens of a Christmas on Sunday, December 3

Stanwick Lakes will celebrate Yule – The Festival of Mid Winter on Sunday, December 17, with ancient Viking and Pagan traditions at the fore, to mark the returning of the lights. Visitors will be able to explore a Viking camp, join in fireside Shamanic Drumming, take part in yule themed craft activities, and join with the torch lit lakeside procession and celebrations over in the outdoor theatre. Of course, you’ll be invited to feast too, with food and refreshments available. Festival of Mid Winter at Stanwick Lakes

It is the perfect place to shop from a parade of independent suppliers.

But with the cost of living hammering our finances, it’s simply not feasible to think that we can support Santa the way we used to. Gifts don’t have to be worth a fortune to be appreciated, and with some inventiveness you can ‘do’ Xmas on a tight budget. Remember, it’s not really that long ago that children were happy to receive a satsuma, some nuts and and some candy in their stocking! But seriously, no amount of Xmas day smiles is worth landing yourself in debt for. If you can’t afford it now, you won’t be able to afford it any easier when the bills arrive later on. But when you are shopping for gifts, never take the first price you see. Shop savvy and you can make great savings; use price comparison websites, make the most of store event days, and always zap the store card to get benefits, cash back or points. Non perishable foods can be bought gradually as part of the general weekly shop – have a Christmas food list and check in store to see when the deals are on to stock up on those seasonal choccies and boxes of nibbles. Team up with family, friends or neighbours and buy your booze in bulk – 25% off deals

44

can make quite the saving. And consider ‘own brands’ as opposed to those premium ones. You’ll be surprised by the quality on offer. Christmas decorations are sparkly and cool, but all too often, pricey! Instead, do a quick internet search for ways that kids can get creative with doilies and toilet roll tubes, coloured paper and glitter.

How about getting creative to make your own unique christmas decoration?

The decorations will be a fraction of the store prices and truly unique. And don’t forget that budget shops sell all you need to colour up your house and festive tree for less. And so to that tree; will you have a real one? A plastic one? Do you need one at all? Think carefully before your purchase – will you take a real fir with roots that can become an annual part of your seasonal festivities? If you buy a plastic one, you need to think long term – please don’t use it once and send it to landfill. At this time of year, many charity shops will bring out their selection of Christmas trees and decorations at affordable prices. Start your buying experience there and you’ll be helping great causes too. We love receiving a Christmas card; a personalised message spreading festive cheer is often more thoughtful than a gift, but it’s becoming an ever more costly annual expense – with the cost of a stamp now a whopping £1.25, the days when you could afford to visit the post box with an arm full of cards is long gone. There are still many ways to send Seasons Greetings - pick up the phone, drop a text or send an email. But however you do it, be sure to reach out to your nearest and dearest, and to those in your community who might otherwise spend the season alone. The gift of kindness is the best of all, and it’s free...

Merry and bright Where and when to enjoy the Christmas light switch-ons....

I

n Stony Stratford, the big Christmas switch-on is set for Saturday, December 2 and before the illuminations comes a full day of fun. Morris Dancers will be showing off their fancy footwork and jangling as they move with a range of styles and colourful costumes being shown off around the town during the day, and it is hoped that the impressive Stony Stratford Mummers will show out too. Take a ride in the High Street and the Market Square with the fun fair, and there will be live music at Watling Fest – providing local talents a platform in Market Square from late morning.

48

November 2023 | Pulse Magazine | Christmas in the City

Red Phoenix will be heading off on a walk around the town at 10.30am and weaving stories as she goes – join her for an entertaining stroll. It is hoped that Santa will stop off on the day to see you all, and if you are looking for festive treats, you would be wise to check out the stalls set up for business on the High Street. When darkness falls over the town, the lantern parade will meander down London Road onto the High Street and into the Market Square ready for the big countdown before the lights go on at 5pm. A good old carol sing song will round off the festive fun. Keep up to date on developments at stonylights.org

The centre:mk hosts its Santa Parade on Friday, November 17

Newport Pagnell’s annual illuminations go live on Saturday, November 25. The High Street will be closed to motorists, and for one day only traffic will be replaced by a street market – try your luck on the tombolas, purchase a cheeky treat to eat, stock up on handmade Crimbo pressies and support local charities as you go. Roads will be closed between 8am and 8pm. Don’t say you’ve not been warned! In addition, an afternoon of entertainment will begin at 1pm. For all the latest news visit FB: Newport Pagnell Christmas Lights Page. The lights will shine brightly at Delapré Abbey from Friday, December 1, when the historic Northampton site will hold a festive switch on in its 19th century stables. The free event will run between 4pm and 6pm and entry is free.

In Olney, the switch will be flicked on Thursday, November 23, but there are other events around the town to look forward to too; see elsewhere in this guide for more on the annual Dickens of a Christmas event (Dec 3), and local retailers will open their doors for late night shopping on Thursday, November 23 and Thursday, December 7. In St Peter and St Paul Church, the annual Christmas Tree Festival will run over the weekend of December 2 and 3.

At centre:mk the annual Santa Parade is confirmed for Friday, November 17. Beginning at door 1 at 5.15pm, members from the cast of Cinderella - this year’s pantomime spectacular at Milton Keynes Theatre - will meet and greet families waiting to see Santa. The man in red will arrive at 5.30pm and a parade will wind its way down the length of the centre to Middleton Hall where the grotto will be declared open and the festivities will begin.

In Northampton, Delapré Abbey is inviting you to step into an illuminated woodland trail, with enchanting light installations and the brand-new trail that will lead you not just through the woodland, but the walled garden and the grounds. A fabulous way to light up your festive season, and there’s plenty of time to enjoy it too. Opening times: Friday, November 24 – Sunday, December 31 The Abbey will also be the setting for a Candlelit Tour allowing you to experience Christmas through the ages with a festive tipple and treats from the past included in the price. Shower, walk-in bath, or wet room? We can help you decide

bathroom. One option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower, this is suited to those with limited mobility and who struggle to step into a traditional bath. Slip-resistant shower trays are available in various sizes, and accessories like shower seats mean you can relax and let the water wash over you. Grab rails provide further safety and they come in a variety of modern designs, so they won’t make your bathroom feel clinical. However, some people still like having a bath to a shower so this is when we would recommend a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats (sometimes heated), quick fill and drain options and some even have jacuzzi functions to help ease aches and pains. The third option is a wet room which eliminates obstacles with slip-resistant flooring and a central drain, making them ideal for wheelchair users and caregivers however they can be more costly. It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose but at AHM Installations, we have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. We provide FREE quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look. At AHM we believe everyone should access to safe, affordable bathing so we’ll always find a bathing solution to meet your needs and your budget. our central heating boiler may be on the blink, a dripping tap is driving you to distraction or you need a new bathroom suite or gas safety check. At times like this you need a professional service from a qualified gas engineer or plumber. Able has built its reputation on delivering on its promises. The Milton Keynes based enterprise was set up in 2008 by senior engineer Matt Holtom. Since then, it has grown steadily setting high standards across a wide range of services from servicing boilers to fitting a wet room or tracking down a leak. Its client list includes some of the leading estate agents in Milton Keynes. Matt said: “Like us, estate agents want to give the best service. We will not compromise 54

We believe all our customers from homeowners to businesses deserve the very best service. “We understand how stressful it can be when there is a central heating breakdown so clients need to feel confident that they can put their trust in us. Everyone’s budgets are under pressure so even if the plumbing work is planned the customer still wants to know they are getting good value with no nasty surprises when they come to pay the bill.” The friendly team of qualified gas engineers, who have years of expertise in domestic and commercial heating and plumbing, can undertake a wide range of services. The costs of an extensive range of services are listed on the company’s website with a clear explanation. This includes gas safety and boiler checks, the annual service of a gas, oil or LPG boiler and the hourly rate for a plumber or domestic gas, Oftec oil or LPG engineer. Other services include commercial servicing and gas safety certificates. Warranties of up to 18 years are available on gas boilers. Matt said: “We’re not the cheapest – that’s intentional. We offer a quality service, but we believe in being transparent about our services. We have carefully selected all the items we carry on our vans with the aim of getting the job fixed as quickly as possible. “Sometimes there are unforeseen issues, but we talk through the options with customers.”

Meet Mr Khiani Consultant Cardiologist We speak to Mr Khiani to ask what you can expect when you come to see him at Saxon Clinic. If you have developed symptoms which concern you, or you are worried about your heart health, then don’t take any chances. By seeing a cardiologist, you can be sure your heart is healthy, or if there is a problem, they can provide treatment to get you on the mend. A first consultation involves taking a history and physical examination as well as an ECG (an electrical trace of your heart). Your cardiologist will then form a list of possible diagnoses and organise further investigations, such as an ultrasound of the heart (Echo) and 24 hour ECG monitor.

If you are worried, or would like to speak with Mr Khiani, please call 01908 036 525 and book an appointment.

After completing the investigations most patients can be reassured their heart is perfectly healthy, a proportion of patients will require medications to control their heart condition and a small proportion of patients will require surgery, often this is keyhole surgery performed as a day case procedure. 27899 2566 MKT ADT / 10.2023

Yes, your end of year dinners and pre-Christmas catch-ups should be styled with a side of sultry — lingerie looks and the brassiere being a highlight on the runways at Ferragamo, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni and more.

From the sheer dresses at Moschino and Bottega Veneta, to the models seen in sparkly/knitted pants at Miu Miu and Lanvin, it seems fashion’s It Girl is an exhibitionist! But if sheer dresses aren’t your thing? Try boudoir feathers, luxurious, well-placed ruffles, and corset or cup-detailing instead. Beyond showing off your bra through whispers of fabric, the look to achieve is Bombshell, through hourglass silhouettes that nip, tuck and make a trophy of the waist. It was moulded skirt suits at Versace, and neatly tailored bodies at Chanel and Louis Vuitton, so go slink yourself into something fitted. If buying new doesn’t send your pulse racing in a good way, rekindle things with your wardrobe at home. We’ve all got a belt we can wrap around our favourite dress or pair of flattering trousers. Health advice the RSPCA is itching to share with you! We love our pets very much, but we aren’t the only ones – parasites are just as enamoured with our puddy-tats and doggies too, and they can be quite the menace. Pulse’s Sammy Jones resisted the urge to scratch the itch as she found out more about how to keep the bugs at bay.

O

ur handsome boy Joseph was a wee kitten when we adopted him from the Milton Keynes & North Bucks (MK & NB) branch of the RSPCA. He had been started on treatment for fleas, but bringing him into the home meant that we bought his undesirables inside too, and his tummy was teeming with worms. Thankfully, the medication did the trick and he has been free of nasties for years now. It’s important to act promptly if you discover a problem with your pet and banish the bugs – but sadly, cases in Milton Keynes are on the rise. “Summer is typically thought of as peak flea season, but milder winters, along with central heating and carpeting, have led to more fleas and similar pests,” said Shirley Jones from the MK & NB branch of the RSPCA. “In the last couple of months alone we’ve rescued and rehabilitated several dozen cats and dogs suffering the consequences of untreated pests,” she told Pulse. Fleas are among the many parasites who live on the outside of an animal’s body, burrowing deep into the coat, and biting their skin. “There are different types of fleas depending on their host species, but they’re not always that picky,” Shirley said, “Often it is the cat flea 60

that jumps onto our dogs and we humans can be bitten by fleas too. You may see fleas or their droppings in your pet’s coat, and small red areas which are the bites or evidence of scratching done by your pet in response to the bites.” Fleas are small and brown, and at between just 1mm and 2mm long they can be difficult to spot – but their droppings and the affected areas afflicted by bites are easier to locate. And if you run a flea comb through the coat, you’ll catch the little blighters in the comb teeth. ‘It’s important to seek treatment as soon as you discover a problem, to prevent prolonged, more severe issues,” Shirley said. And with a single flea capable of laying 50 eggs a day, it won’t take long before they are having a party on your pet. Yuk. “The good news is flea treatment normally covers all of the different types of fleas.” Flea allergy is the most common cause of skin disease in cats. When cats with a flea allergy are bitten the reaction means the whole skin becomes irritated and itchy which leads to the poor feline licking, scratching and biting at the skin. The result is sore, scabby and even ulcerated skin which can be very painful and a cycle of irritation and scratching becomes the norm. Once a cat has developed a flea allergy they will remain sensitive to any flea bites and could suffer from a nasty flare-up if they get bitten. “A high-quality prescription flea treatment is essential, and all animals in the home should be treated simultaneously,” Shirley said, “At the same time, use a house spray to ensure furnishings are free from fleas and eggs.” But fleas aren’t the only pest to consider – mites are microscopic parasites, and there are two types to beware of; burrowing and surface mites. The former causes cases of scabies, also known as sarcoptic mange. It’s highly contagious and causes intense itching. Animals will constantly scratch, resulting in scabs, self-trauma and hair loss. Two pups – Double and Decker - left abandoned in a new city bus stop in the summer were both suffering from the condition. “The terrier pups were only around four weeks old and when they were found by a member of the public they were in an awful state,” Shirley said, “They had terrible sarcoptic mange which had left lots of bald spots on their bodies.”

The good news is that as nasty as these parasitic menaces are, they can be banished with prompt action, so do as a flea would, and jump to it!”

This thriving business is well known to trades people, but an open day promises to catch the eye of locals who live and work nearby. What lies behind the doors of Hardware For You’s warehouse might come as a surprise to people who live and work in Newport Pagnell. But things are about to change. This is not one of those companies that simply sells one line of products. Sue said: “I source all the products and like to get something totally different. I am not in to doing cheap and cheerful. arly November is the best time for autumn colour in the garden. Strong winds loosened tree stakes and ties and these needed to be checked. Damage to the bark of some ornamental and fruit trees was found. Bare-root trees and roses are now available and should be stood in water before planting - liberally sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi on them to encourage plant growth. The rows of salad greens were covered by plastic cloches, which have saved them from damage by heavy rain. They are providing additions to the school’s meals. A large root of rhubarb was dug up, divided and planted elsewhere, leaving room for two short rows of broad beans, Aquadulce Claudia, to be fitted in, and a row of garlic cloves pressed in firmly, after a mulch of fresh compost has been added. In spite of a poor show this summer, I am sowing sweet peas one cm deep in pots of fresh, multipurpose compost. Pelargoniums and fuchsias, potted up from the garden, must be kept frost-free in the greenhouse or in a cool, light room. Continuing to feed the birds and keeping the birdbath topped up is an important routine. What happened to Bonfire Night? Ralph Westmoreland

MK CITY COUNCIL

Milton Keynes at the forefront of innovation

M

ilton Keynes is a world-renowned smart city that is at the forefront of ground-breaking new technologies. Milton Keynes City Council has been working with local partners and organisations to solidify this position, and we’ve got some exciting updates which I wanted to share with you below.

ideas and provides potential for new high-tech, high-skill jobs. A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, and we expect that passengers will be able to use the self-driving shuttles from as early as October 2024. More information on expected routes will be published on our website soon.

Trialling self-driving shuttles

Some of the fastest electric vehicle (EV) chargers have been installed in Central Milton Keynes, which means motorists can get an 80% charge in just 20 minutes. The City Council has been working with BP Pulse to install rapid chargers across the centre, with there being 25 new chargers for residents and visitors to use. Milton Keynes has one of the biggest and fastest charging networks in the country and will continue to improve our EV infrastructure. We’ve recently secured funding to add over a hundred chargers in residential areas where there is less off-street parking, and we hope that this will help residents who are wanting to make the switch to electric.

Milton Keynes City Council and its partners have secured almost £2m in funding to deliver new state-of-the-art driverless shuttles into the city. This means that residents will soon be able to use autonomous vehicles that vary in size, with anything from a oneseater up to the size of a bus. The project will allow us to install the connectivity and other infrastructure necessary for self-driving shuttles, as well as robotic and drone-based services to operate safely. We’ve teamed up with Smart City Consultancy and other partners to deliver the scheme, which will be used to trial the technology before it could be rolled out across the country. The City Council is committed to exploring new forms of sustainable transport so local people can benefit, as well as helping other cities around the world learn how to be greener places to live and work. Demandresponsive, autonomous vehicles can help to reduce congestion, and create a cleaner environment so it’s an exciting trial to lead on. The trial will also attract global organisations who want to test these 68

B

ournemouth hard rock mob South of Salem visit the new city (Nov 1) as part of their Samhain Supernova tour, kickstarting a monstrously busy month for the venue. It’s SoS’s first headline stint, and support will come from She Burns Red. The Professionals (Nov 2) made their debut at the end of the ‘70s, formed by Paul Cook and Steve Jones following the end of the band that changed a generation, the Sex Pistols. Three years later and The Professionals were over too, and it would be 2015 before their resurrection. The band released its first new material in 2017, on an album which had key players queuing up to take part; Billy Duffy, Mick Jones, Duff McKagan and Phil Collen all left their mark on that release. A second studio album, SNAFU, followed in 2021. Now with Tom Spencer in place of Steve Jones it’s musical busines as usual. Yorkshire’s thrash quartet Evile have a new album out, and the tour to support The Unknown pulls into the Wolverton haunt on November 3, and when they ship out Bristol’s punking, garage alt-hardcore sorts The St. Pierre Snake Invasion – who released their third genre-busting long-player Galore back in April - slide into position. Kosheen (Nov 4), one of the UK’s booming electronic music showstoppers who gifted us Hide U, are celebrating 25 years of music making with a tasty tour pulling the very best out of their career of musical gems. With Starsailor, James Walsh (Nov 5) has supported artists including The Rolling Stones, The Police, The Killers and U2. 70

Starsailor’s most recent elpee was issued in 2017, but when not working with the band, James has cultivated a nice career as a solo singer-songwriter and has written with the superb Suzanne Vega, Professor Green, Eliza Doolittle and Melanie C. Not content to leave it there, this powerhouse of creativity has turned his hand to movie soundtracks too. Oh, and earlier this year he issued a new release, Coming Good. This Craufurd date comes just before Starsailor start their new tour in the Netherlands to mark the 20th anniversary of their second, lauded Gold-certified album, Silence is Easy, which spawned singles including the Twin Atlantic - Nov 13 title track and Four To The Floor.

The Professionals - Nov 2

The Clause - Nov 15

Want a pop fact, pop-pickers? Silence is Easy was also the last album produced by Phil Spector. Well, he worked on a couple of numbers, at least. Brooklyn’s melodic punkers Worriers launch their co-headline tour with Paws in the Keynes (Nov 6), five years since their last visit to these shores. They come bearing new produce too; 12-track elpee Trust Your Gut was cut loose in September.

James Walsh - Nov 5

Songwriter and guitarist Jonah Matranga – aka onelinedrawing (Nov 7) – will push a mix of material from past projects - don’t pop to the bar or you might just miss his re-imagined cover of Beyonce’s Irreplaceable. The same night, the venue will be hosting Faith No More man Roddy Bottum – turn the page for much more about that. London’s Deadletter have been selling out venues all over and tickets for The Craufurd show are running low – jump on now, or sit at home and miss out. Another show guaranteed to sell-out is the return of Dreadzone (Nov 10) celebrating three decades of Dread, or as Clash Magazine reckons, ‘a feast of bass heavy dubwise danceability.’ Back in the 1990s, as frontman with Wolfsbane, Blaze Bayley enjoyed some particularly memorable shows at The Pitz where the Tamworth terrors always went down a storm. Later, Bayley jumped ship to Iron Maiden, before embarking on a solo career. Today, he manages working with ‘Bane (the band played an enthusiastic date at The Craufurd in 2022) with his own solo work, and it’s that which brings him back (Nov 11). 2023 has been quite the year for Blaze, who suffered a heart attack in the spring. It’s great that he can see out the year back where he should be – on the stage. Tickets to see Twin Atlantic (Nov 13) sold out the day they went on sale, and small surprise – the band recently seen supporting Muse purposely chose to get up close with

Pet Needs - Nov 21

their fans with a string of intimate shows – and the Craufurd bagged the first date. Brummie-based indie rock and rollers The Clause (Nov 15) have ‘60s swagger, an 80s groove and a 90s attack style,’ apparently. They’ll be escaping the office environment to deliver it directly to our inboxes. Erm, we mean earboxes... L.A power trio Sasquatch (Nov 17) are, by their own admission, ‘an institution among fuzz heads and those willing to groove.’ If you’ve not shuffled their way previously – hop online now and maybe check out the release Fever Fantasy, and then go take a ticket for the show. Howlin’ Skulls will support. Want to hear the hits of The Specials and Madness in one place on the same night? 2-Tone and Ska hits will fall like rain with the arrival of Special Kinda Madness (Nov 18) before The Members (Nov 19) arrive to mark 45 years (count ‘em) since the release of their anthem, The Sound of the Suburbs. When that was released, the punk players infiltrated a chart otherwise bustling with soppy love songs and naff dance tracks. It spent four months in the charts and shifted 250,000 copies, outselling their contemporaries like The Clash, The Damned and Generation X. Pet Needs (Nov 21) will bring fractured party music, The New Roses (Nov 22) will play classic rock for you as part of their Sweet Poison tour, The Hara return (Nov 23) on their Survival Mode tour, The Total Stone Roses (Nov 24) will bang the drums, and Conflict (the first band we ever saw live at the long defunct Countapoint) will bring anarcho-punk to town on November 25. Flat Party (Nov 27) and Hollywood party rock-n-rollers The Bites (Nov 28) will roll through before Uli Jon Roth, who found fame back in the 1970s as the lead guitarist with the Scorpions, plays his last show of 2023. Uli spent five years with the German rockers before going on to influence generations of younger players; huge names including Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett and Billy Corgan – no surprise he is seen as one of the great innovators in his genre. And breathe... we did say it was a bumper month for music. > Click to thecraufurdarms.com and get mitts on tickets pronto.

Man on Man on music

uring the depressingly bleak pandemic lockdowns, longtime musicians Roddy Bottum and Joey Holman didn’t start yoga, go running or bake bread – they travelled from New York to California to care for Roddy’s ailing mother. During that protracted journey they did what comes naturally to this pair of creatives – and penned new material. The couple wrote a selection of new-love songs all about tender infatuation, allconsuming lust and the excitement of a full future together. They called themselves Man on Man. “It’s so fun,” they cooed in content unison, “to be gay,” their own birds-and-bees ode to joy. Now they are back with more on the pop-powered Provincetown. If their debut represented the start of their relationship, this follow-up represents its steady maturation. For Bottum, a veteran of big-time rock bands including Faith No More, Holman represented the first time he felt fully embraced by a

collaborator, that he didn’t have to scream for his ideas to be heard. For Holman, meanwhile, it’s Bottum’s ability to reduce thorny ideas, whether lyrically or musically or emotionally, into more digestible notions that makes the difference. More than a project, this union might come with a dollop of playfulness, but confuse it with a joke band and you’ll be wide of the mark.

As the PR says, ‘Provincetown is not only the sound of Man on Man stepping fully into their shared lives and shared band, but also into their role as two singing seers of a current American concern—the ability to exist as yourself, to love who you love how you love them, with self-respect and dignity intact. And, of course, to have fun doing it.’ > Grab tickets at thecraufurdarms.com

Film Reviews by Jordan Adcock

THE

OLD OAK

FILM OF THE MONTH - Star Rating: 3.5/5

Ken Loach, despite what controversies his personal opinions may cause, remains a veteran filmmaker capable of creating considerable onscreen empathy as he highlights societal injustices and how they turn people against each other. Loach’s latest, The Old Oak is suitably hard-hitting and resolutely unglamorous, even if it struggles to match the cultural impact of his earlier film I, Daniel Blake. It’s 2016 and The Old Oak pub is run down and run by TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner), a kindly if slightly timid soul who helps out the refugees from Syria brought into town, especially budding photographer Yara (Ebla Mari). His plans to reopen a neglected part of his pub brings him into conflict with long-time patrons who think he’s abandoning them for outsiders, whose arrival is already resented by many.

As you can probably tell, Loach isn’t afraid to go political, addressing sentiments such as ‘charity begins at home’ and not outright dismissing the genuine concerns it may stem from. The scale and stakes are very personal but though the conflict isn’t subtle, it’s also far from simple, and Loach and writer Paul Laverty don’t offer easy answers or resolutions; it’s much more satisfying to watch unfold than most of what Hollywood calls entertainment. TJ is a rather standard main character for Loach’s films and the script makes a few leaps throughout, which can be forgiven for the quietly hard-hitting drama it earns and underlying unease in every scene, backed by gripping acting from a cast that’s made more convincing by Loach not casting name actors. ✪

THE GREAT ESCAPER

DUMB MONEY

THE CREATOR Star Rating: 2/5

Star Rating: 1.5/5

Excellent performances from both Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson make The Great Escaper worth seeing. It’s based on the true story of D-Day veteran Bernard Jordan, who “broke out” of his nursing home to reach Normandy and the 70th anniversary commemorations by himself, while his wife Irene covers for him. While both have their secrets, traumas and life together to remember, there’s nothing too upsetting or indeed unpredictable here. In some ways it’s a shame the film doesn’t lean harder into the reflective drama, very sensitively delivered by Caine and Jackson with an understated cheekiness. The film’s at its least convincing when it tries to go more light-hearted, perhaps in search of broader audience appeal. ✪

In one of the quicker turnarounds from true story to big screen, Dumb Money retells how individual investors, rallied by the WallStreetBets subreddit, sent American games retailer GameStop’s stock to stratospheric heights in early 2021. In the process, they countered actual Wall Street’s hedge fund firms who deliberately short sold companies to boost their own bottom lines. The jam-packed main cast led by Paul Dano make this an energetic and well-paced watch. Yet by aiming to be crudely funny and shocking in the vein of The Wolf of Wall Street or The Big Short, it undermines its own ‘us versus them’ dynamic, specifically by trying to have its cast be loud, quippy and larger-than-life characters while also being supposedly ordinary people against the arrogant, hedonistic money-makers. ✪

It’s fitting that The Creator, a sci-fi epic of humans co-existing and warring with AI after a nuclear detonation, should be directed by Gareth Edwards – he can handle huge scope and digital effects, shown by his Godzilla and the Star Wars spin-off Rogue One, but the human element’s artificial and unconvincing. The Creator’s no exception, despite featuring a sergeant on the run with an AI simulant girl who has the power to end the war. For all the film’s visual intricacies, the worldbuilding is strangely vague, the main characters bland and the plot repetitively moving from one futuristic shootout to the next. Look out for Ralph Ineson and his distinctive gravelly voice, distractingly miscast as the hard-nosed American general – the film around him is hardly absorbing. ✪

Just stick to watching the first two Expendables films, where the concept of bringing together 80s and 90s action stars in a fun ensemble still carried some novelty and charm. This fourth film, nearly ten years after the third instalment, is less expendable than just plain desperate. The hollowed-out main cast goes through the weary motions, adding 50 Cent and Megan Fox where Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis used to appear. Even Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham’s back and forth feels forced before Stallone makes an early exit, leaving Statham as the main hero against your typical militant bad guys. The fights are plenty but aren’t inspired enough to excite, accompanied by weird editing, cartoonish CGI and lame excuses for humour. This series shouldn’t have come out of retirement. ✪

he O’Hara household was in turmoil. Boxes of belongings, with nowhere to go, littered the house. The dogs were permanently confused, as was I. Moving home isn’t supposed to be this complicated, perplexing and frustrating, surely? Panic mode had been engaged due to an abrupt chain collapse. We were suddenly up a water course without a propulsion device, and those waters were choppy. It felt like white water rafting, blindfolded while riding in a dinghy slavered in grease. In addition, the water was corrosive hydrochloric acid. It wasn’t a great feeling. We needed to secure a fresh purchaser to replace the original who was now bereft of their own buyer and consequently lacking any financial ability to continue. There was a looming possibility that everything would need to be unpacked so as to return the house to a presentable condition. This was a task that was, at best, rather unappealing, causing a couple of questions: where do all the flattened empty cardboard boxes go, and would it result in our being overwhelmed by the foaming devils swamping our slippery raft?

As it happened, a substantially cheaper, bigger property, with an extra bedroom, became our new target. In the event, a new offer was secured and everything looks fine. The vendor of the original house we were aiming to buy had promptly withdrew the second he heard we had hit an obstacle. As we had anticipated that may be his reaction, we had immediately arranged to view possible replacements. As it happened, a substantially cheaper, bigger property, with an extra bedroom, became our new target. This time around, we had a First Time Buyer, along with conditions written into the sale to ensure a speedy conclusion. The original vendor seemed to have misread the housing market because they relisted their property £3,000 up from the initial listing that had attracted us. Probably as

a result of having been spoken to by their estate agent – who may have spotted that our own property had quickly re-sold after a price adjustment – the vendor then re-offered their property to us at £5,000 lower than we had originally negotiated (£10,000 lower than it re-entered the market). We declined their approach, telling them that with the reduction they were still more expensive than the property with that extra bedroom and greater space. They immediately reduced their listing to what we had rejected, but it was too late – we had seen better and cheaper. Interestingly, were it not for his knee-jerk reaction, there is a distinct possibility that after the hiccup we experienced, we would very probably have blindly stuck with the original deal. He would have realised £5,000 more than he was now asking, having completed instead of currently sitting on an unsold property languishing on the housing market. The happy thing is that we get a bigger house with an extra bedroom (a study for me!), more space, and all for nearly £10,000 less than were prepared to pay right up to the point when he reacted the way he did. Will we be pleased by the end? Watch this space! Phil O’Hara

THEATRE

n o s a J h it w s le g Gadgets and gig Morbid history, marvellous music and giggles galore. Pulse’s Sammy Jones takes a stroll through November’s on stage attractions...

W

e’ll start with a little reminder that Carabosse Theatre has continuing performances of Bram Stoker’s Dracula at Stantonbury Theatre until November 4. It is being described as a ‘sensory feast’ and it’s one that has a cast of class, and a whole host of clever people adding further value – ‘Count’ them: MK Women’s Choir, Act Out/ Act Up Drama Group, illusionist David Penn and MK College Art Students taking care of a ‘pop up’ Gallery Exhibition. Later in the month, Stantonbury has a gruesome sing-song with Wolverton Gilbert & Sullivan Society taking you back to the dark alleyways of Victorian London, and the Old Time Music Hall of the East End, with all eyes on the working girls and fellas who lived there. ‘With a mix of rousing songs, comedy and pathos, the show gives a strident and powerful voice to Jack the Ripper’s victims,’ promise the creatives. Given the subject matter, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn this isn’t a show for little people. At The Stables, funny gal Rosie Jones rocks up with Triple Threat (Nov 2), which will see her ponder whether she is ‘a national treasure, a little prick, or somewhere in between!’ Unapologetic cheekiness, nonsensical fun and unadulterated JOY is to be expected.

Having delivered the goods in the West End performing in the musical My Fair Lady, Stephen K Amos is back with more funnies in Oxymoron (Nov 4). Hurry if you want to bag a seat. There weren’t too many left at the time of writing... And be quick if you fancy spending the evening with Jason Byrne in The Ironic Bionic Man (Nov 16). If ever there was a fitting title... “I’m full of fecking gadgets,” laughs the 51-year-old, explaining the name of his new show, “At this stage in my life, I have ironically become bionic. I have six stents in my heart, I’ve got a wonky eye, it used to turn in when I was a kid so they fixed it and my dad used to call it my bionic eye, and had cartilage taken out of my knee because I ripped it on the toilet.” And, to coin a phrase made famous by another funny fella, there’s more... “My left arm was dislocated fully in Australia. I’ve got staples on my lungs and my balls don’t work anymore because I got the snip as well.” The Ironic Bionic Man is Jason’s most personal stand-up show to date - partly down to that material about his own health and mortality, but it’s also because he talks about his beloved father, Paddy, who died just before the pandemic. Milton Keynes Theatre has programmed a couple of classics before we get near to the panto season, starting with Jesus Christ Superstar (Oct 30-Nov 4) Set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas, this delivery reflects the rock roots

that defined a generation, with songs including I Don’t Know How to Love Him and Superstar. Then comes the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King and I (Nov 7-11). This reboot has won four Tony Awards, including for Best Musical and Best Revival, and the score is superb. One of my earliest – and best – theatre memories was watching Yul Brynner in the role of The King on the London stage. You won’t get Yul, but you will still get a sublime show. Welsh National Opera returns with Ainadamar (Nov 16) and La traviata (Nov 18) as part of their annual visit here. Ainadamar, Arabic for ‘Fountain of Tears’, is the ancient well near Granada where the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca – labelled by the Falangist militia as a ‘homosexual socialist’ – was brutally executed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Golijov’s twice-Grammy-winning opera reimagines Lorca’s life through a flashback of memories by his muse and collaborator, the actress Margarita Xirgu. Take your seat for an emotive and dazzling kaleidoscope of music, dance and theatre, where flamenco meets opera. Sung in Spanish, with English surtitles. So that’s Ainadamar explained, and Verdi’s timeless classic La traviata is a heart-wrenching tale of thwarted love, scandal and self-sacrifice. And they say that Eastenders has it all going on! Liza Goddard, Matthew Kelly and Simon Shepperd start in Noises Off (Nov 21-25), following the on and offstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble through the fictional farce, Nothing On. At odds with that title, there most certainly is plenty going on in theatre-land this month!

MOTORING

Build your dreams ADAM TUDOR-LANE reviews the electric BVD Atto 3

I

n the ever-evolving world of electric vehicles, a Chinese giant named BYD, which stands for ‘Build Your Dreams,’ has made it to UK shores. BYD is one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers and has sold nearly 200,000 EVs each month in the first half of 2023 alone. With 600,000 employees, including 50,000 engineers, BYD’s commitment to innovation is pretty clear. Their first assault on the UK market is in the form of the Atto 3, a compact-to-medium-sized electric crossover. Think Kia Niro EV, smaller than a VW ID.4 but larger than a Peugeot e-2008. Starting at £37,000 for the ‘Active’ model, with the ‘Comfort’ at £500 more, and the rangetopping ‘Design’ at £39,695, the Atto 3 is keenly priced. While the Atto 3’s exterior may not be groundbreaking, its electric identity is evident with a blanked-out grille, full-width front and rear lighting, and metallic rear side panels. Inside, vibrant colours and playful design elements target a younger audience. And despite its size, the cabin offers ample space, with a 440-litre boot.

Performance-wise, the Atto 3 accelerates smoothly, reaching 0-62 mph in 7.3 seconds. It handles UK roads comfortably, though the brakes lack modulation ending up feeling rather digital – on, or off. All models are powered by the same 60.4 kWh battery, which provides up to 260 miles of range, and it comes with a heat pump as standard which will help increase efficiency in our chilly winter months. In terms of pricing and features, it competes well against established rivals. BYD’s “blade battery” is a stand-out feature, it uses a cell-to-pack design that maximizes usable battery content. This approach allows the Atto 3 to use a less energy-dense chemistry, saving costs, enhancing durability, and reducing environmental impact. Additionally, the Atto 3 integrates the motor, power electronics, charger, AC-DC inverter, DC-DC converter, and battery management system into a single unit, reducing weight and complexity. So the BYD Atto 3 may not boast the most eye-catching exterior, but it offers a compelling package. Its unassuming design conceals a funky and spacious cabin, making it a practical choice for families. While it doesn’t lead in battery capacity or range, it strikes a balance that is more than enough for most drivers. High levels of standard kit further distinguish it from rivals. The question now is whether the British market will embrace the BYD Atto 3. Historically, the UK has welcomed foreign

FACTS AT A GLANCE Top Speed: 99 MPH Performance: 0-62 in 7.3 seconds Battery size: 60.4 kWh Range: Up to 260 miles manufacturers, like Toyota and Kia, before they gained wider recognition. Flavour of the Times - It’s that Gunpowder, Treason and Plot time of year! Scorpio time, beginning with Mars and Mercury both close to the sun in that sign. It’s a striking symbolic image of unseen undercurrents with potentially far-reaching consequences: Guy Fawkes and his gang deep in the bowels of the Parliament building, moving barrels around, seeking to overthrow the existing order. Perhaps we should expect nefarious deeds this month too, carried out in secret, in the dark, eventually coming to light? By all accounts, things are on the move again this month. Pluto is direct and Saturn joins it now so there is bound to be progress of a sort: things coming to light that have been kept under wraps.

Too clever by half? You may think you’ve got things well worked out in your head, you may feel you understand the deep, dark and Machiavellian manipulations of others, but there is a good chance that you’ve got it wrong. There’s many a twist in a cat’s tail and you could be caught out by circumstances not being quite what you thought they were.

You are not good at clarity and structure, preferring to go with the flow, but as Saturn turns in your favour this month you may find that turning your back on past events becomes easier. You can start to plan ahead a little. There are still issues to work through and your emotions may feel deep but Venus and Neptune working together will help you handle this.

Mercury moves into Sagittarius this month which may cause many folk to go out and hit people with their theories about the world wide conspiracy (you know: the one that isn’t really a conspiracy at all!) There’s a whiff of fundamentalism in the air so try hard not to berate people who may not agree with your own personal ‘truth’.

You will want to ‘get stuff done’ in your usual busy way, but it’s the wrong time of year for you to achieve this. This month is intense emotionally, and while you would rather blast your way past this, you probably should ease your foot off the accelerator and take your time. It’s probably a good idea to appreciate that others do not have your energy, so understanding that is key.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21

You will need to have your feet firmly planted on the ground this month. There is a lot of hidden issues that are starting to bubble up, perhaps in your closest relationships, so I would tend to slow down and deal with things as they occur one by one. It won’t be easy but my hunch is that most of what occurs is resolvable. Not easily but it is do-able.

Have you learnt the harsh lessons of earlier this year? Pluto has turned to direct motion so at last you can move cautiously forward. There is still clearing up work to be done for the real growth to occur but now is a time for absolute honesty, particularly with yourself. Delusions can be laid to rest so that you can see yourself in the cold light of day.

People may say that you are always full of airy, fairy ideas and maybe there is some truth in that, but this month may make you aware that many of these are born of the passion inside you for a better world. You may feel more intensely emotional than usual, and you may find it harder than to hang onto your habitual, rather detached rationality.

Venus moves out of Virgo into Libra on 6th, which will ease health matters and other everyday concerns. At least you will feel you can communicate your feelings a bit better. Nonetheless, it’s all a bit intense out there so your breezy, friendly disposition may not be appreciated by everybody. Look out for folk who are in need of a bit of reassurance!

You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year. Not much action for Virgos this month, although you will feel supported by Saturn going direct again in Pisces. This will allow you to resume restructuring your life, bringing it under more control. Less is probably more, so you may experience more benefit from doing less better. Pay attention to family and people around you. Your advice is almost always sound.

LIBRA September 24 – October 23

Venus arrives in your sign early on in the month and is there all month, so that should feel pleasant in a number of ways. Finances and investments may look up or at least come under some control. In the background, though, it’s a violently unfair world out there so fighting for justice and human rights may be something you may wish to get involved with.

Chart readings with me start at £67 and last for an hour on Zoom or Skype. Please go to www.astroguidance.co.uk for more details and to book a session. Scorpio squares up to Leo this month bringing an unwelcome intensity to your life when you would rather be enjoying yourself. You have Mars, Mercury and the Sun all together in the sign of Scorpio, so I would say walk towards it, embrace it, play with it. Who knows, things might turn sexy for you, either in the real world or online!.

Pluto is moving forward now so some intractable issues, perhaps involving children, are potentially solvable now in a way they seemed not to be before! A love interest is probably not going anywhere so it may just drift out of your life. On the other hand, there is some creative potential this month, so perhaps a new hobby or interest may appear for you.
