The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India is a premier institute in the country. Its research interests broadly encompass every area of modern astronomical and astrophysical research conducted at different centres of the Institute, such as, Kodaikanal and Kavalur in Tamil Nadu, Bangalore and Hanle in Ladakh (Jammu & Kashmir). The Ph.D Programme was set up in IIA only about 15 years ago, and about 50 Ph.D Scholars so far have been awarded the doctoral degree. Currently, 25 students are working on their Ph.D. Under the Faculty Improvement Programme, the IIA faculty has guided about 20 Ph.D candidates from various colleges, universities and institutions. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics has now signed an MOU with Pondicherry University on April 28, 2009 to start a joint Ph.D programme and to initiate academic collaborations in teaching and research. This MOU facilitates a mutually beneficial relationship, by which the faculty and students of the Pondicherry University will get opportunities to embark on research in challenging areas of astrophysics to unravel mysteries regarding formation and evolution of stars, galaxies and universe.
