SCIENCE, SCHOLARSHIP, AND SHARKS. Russell’s love for the ocean has led to impressive credentials. Awarded two URI Coastal Fellowships, he worked with Professor Graham Forrester restoring endangered corals in the Caribbean. He received the Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that took him to NOAA’s Office of Habitat Conservation and Restoration in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Awarded a Goldwater Scholarship, the most prestigious undergraduate award offered for students in the STEM disciplines—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, Russell’s current research involves analyzing satellite tag data of tiger sharks. Next up: graduate school and plans to continue research as a college professor. RUSSELL DAUKSIS—North Kingstown, RI, Class of 2013. Major: Marine Biology.

Scuba diving class at URI came in handy sooner than Sarah expected. After becoming a certified diver, she received a National Science Foundation Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship to monitor fish populations at a restored coral reef in the British Virgin Islands. A recipient of the prestigious Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Sarah interned at the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook, located on her beloved Jersey shore. Treasurer of the URI Marine Science Society and a member of the URI Wildlife Society, she also studied abroad at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. Her ideal career? Analyzing human impact on marine environments.
