WILL NEW ENGLAND “BLOW IT”? SUPER BOWLS ARE ALWAYS FUN WHEN THERE IS A CONTROVERSY

There is no secret that I have no love for the New England Patriots. It’s either they are really good at football or really good at cheating and getting away with it. The National Football League is, always has been and probably always will be plagued with renegade coaches, out-of-control players and morally bankrupt organizations. Cheating has become the norm in most professional sports and those teams that we admire the most, we are most quick to forgive and/or look the other way. In the modern age of competition, it is indeed sad to see fans of a team give a pass to Ken Petty those who have to cheat in order to win. What does cheating really accomplish in the long run? Are you truly a champion if you had to cheat your way to the top? Whatever happened to sportsmanship? Whatever happened to the integrity of the game? I grew up in St. Louis and still, to this day, bleed red for the Cardinals. However, during the huge home run race of 1998, when both hometown hitter Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa (of the Cubs), crushed the nearly four decade home run record set by a steroid less New York Yankee named Roger Maris.

Revived after the strike shortened 1994 season, the crowds were back in the stadiums and in huge numbers. The home run race was the catalyst to the renewed interest in professional baseball. That race was closely watched, television ratings were high, and everyone thought baseball was back. Everything couldn’t be more wrong, and baseball, to this day, has changed the nature of professional competition for the worst. Honest hard work and determined practice has been replaced by blood doping, steroids, and anything else that would give someone that extra edge without working for it. It was only years later that the “Sultans Of Swing”, a baseball term of endearment for those who were home run hitters of extraordinary strength, were called before the US Congress to testify about steroid use in professional baseball. The resulting ‘slap on the wrist’ was less than assuring that this cheating behavior would cease forever. It didn’t. The scenario with Barry Bonds’ home run chase of McGwire’s “record” as well as Houston favorite homeboy Roger Clemmons alleged steroid use, exasperated the issue even further. Why do we applaud these things? We may have another New England Super Bowl victory this week, but at what cost? Everyone remembers Spygate where the Patriots were filming St. Louis Ram practices prior to Super Bowl XXXVI. The NFL is also to blame since they did nothing about it.

I don’t expect things to change if we as fans demand it to change. I’d rather be proud of my team that worked hard and overcame adversities, than be ashamed that my team had to cheat and steal to take away a win from a more deserving team. My Super Bowl prediction is this: The National Football League will discover that they have finally grown a pair and will decide that the New England Patriots will be banned from the post-season for the next ten years and that any other team found cheating (or team members beating their significant others) will face the same consequences. That should do it.

The Lion King JR. and The Lion King KIDS at this event. With creative choreography recreating iconic numbers like the “Circle of Life” and “I Just Can’t Wait to be King”, the students took the audience on a memorable journey through the Pride Lands of Africa during their performance. Appearing as young lion cub, Simba, was Scott Fonseka with Fernell Hogan taking on the role of Simba in his older years. Matthew Smith provided the voice of Simba’s father, Mufasa, while Chase Callahan acted as the wise lion. Rafiki - the one and only baboon, was played by Joi Pierre. The musical number also included Sarah Klein as young Nala, Gerra Gistand as Simba’s mother and Mufasa’s wife, Sarabi, and Sam Linda as the noble hornbill, Zazu. “The students from Theatre Under The Stars in Houston were the perfect group to launch The Lion King Experience with their performance of selections from The Lion King KIDS and The Lion King JR. at the Junior Theater Festival,” said Lauren Chapman, Disney Theatrical Group’s Resident Teaching Artist. “Their performance was filled with infectious joy and energy, as well as incredible dance technique and show stopping solos. These young professionals captivated the audience and proved what young artists are capable of when given the opportunity.” In addition to the New Works Showcase, the HSMT students also participated in the festival’s Adjudication where they performed a 15-minute piece from Disney’s High School Musical 2 JR. for a panel of distinguished theater professionals. The work must be seen and read, not as two separate acts, but as one.” ABOUT THE ARTIST Jamie Ellen Davis received her MFA from the University of Houston in 2014, with a concentration in drawing and printmaking. In the spring of 2008, she graduated from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in printmaking and book arts. In 2008 she was awarded the H. Peter Kahn Fellowship and in addition to numerous group exhibitions, Davis has had solo exhibitions at the University of Houston and The Ink Shop Printmaking Center in Ithaca, NY.

TRIBUTE TO MAE WEST FEBRUARY 11th 2pm-3pm HUNTSVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY The Huntsville Public Library will present Mary Anne Burkhalter’s “Tribute to Mae West” on Wednesday, February 11, from 2-3 p.m., in the Library’s Community Room. Ms. Burkhalter has portrayed Miss West across the country for over 20 years, bringing rare songs and material to the show, and takes great pride in keeping the comedienne’s work alive in her “Tribute to Mae West.” Her comedy carries over into the audience, as she employs a unique brand of walkaround humor and involves audience members in on-stage comedic skits. Mae West rose to international stardom, and in 1932 was the highest-paid woman in America. Ms. West was notorious for her snappy wit and controversial characters, and notable for writing all her own material. How fast can YOU go THE KOREAN MOON JARS from 69 to 290 ? by Rosanne Friedman

As long as I can remember, Harris County has developed along Interstate “corridors” radiating out from Houston with two concentric “loops” connecting them. 610 and Sam Houston Beltway, the primary ways for Northsiders to get from the one side of the county to the other, are increasingly congested and dangerous loops. Commerce has become strangled and commuters downright stresses by this. Last Monday, taking my son to Kum-Do lesson on Rd., just south of Bart Pearston Pruitt Rayford, took me a full hour. Now, it shouldn’t take anyone 60 minutes to go 10 miles, 30 miles from downtown. Driving this area resembles a jig-saw puzzle map with missing pieces in the middle. The “missing pieces” are known as F1, F2, and G in SH99/ Grand Parkway terms. So, if you are finding yourself like me sometimes, frustrated with the traffic here, let me offer my “glass half full” perspective. The Grand Parkway is a $1.1 billion project of TxDoT and several other local agencies. It will be another example of how state and local governments here are meeting the growing area’s needs. According to Forbes, half of the U.S. 10 fastest growing counties are in Texas, and Montgomery is one of them. SH99’s completion in 2012 on the Westside has turned the focus on the stretches from 249 to 69 (or 59/Eastex as most call it). Its projected 38 miles and 120 bridges will include 4 lanes of scenic drive with intermittent access roads. Toll rates have yet to be announced, but we can rest assured it will ease traffic times and save fuel and emissions greatly. Zachry-Odebrecht Parkway Builders projects opening in late 2015, just in time for the openings of developments like Spring Commons and the Exxon-Mobil campus on I-45. They project a scenic section crossing Cypress and Spring Creeks and both branches of the San Jacinto Rivers while accessing numer-

ous new and existing housing developments. Did you experience horror of trying to evacuate in 2005 when Houston was projected to take a direct hit from Hurricane Rita? Our van overheated trying to go north on Kuykendahl as traffic snarled from cars that had overheated or ran out of gas in the 100+ degree heat. This is overdue. Two major factors used in figuring quality of life for an area are always infrastructure and roads. The completion of F1, F2, and G sections of the Grand Parkway will improve both in the Spring-Montgomery area. Stay calm and keep telling yourself, “We’re coming into the home stretch”. And say another, ”God bless the inventor of automotive air conditioning.” I’ll leave you with a well known chuckle as the temps begin to rise again here. The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford’s office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately. The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, ‘The Goldberg Air Conditioner’ on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg’s name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show: Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max.

This 400 year old form is called a Moon Jar and is made from white porcelain clay. It’s a mesmerizing shape that has been described as simple, spare, poetic and beautiful. It’s not perfectly round, but subtly asymmetrical, voluminous, it surrounds space in almost a spiritual way. Though it might seem to have been a meditation device, or have a sacred utility, it was used for practical household purposes such as food and drink storage. These forms caught the attention of Bernard Leach (1887-1979), a famous British potter credited for sharing Asian art with the west and Western art with the east, he saw them in Korea about a hundred years ago. By the end of the 19th century the British were the first foreigners Korea allowed into the country and the first with whom Korea established diplomatic relations. In 1935 on Leach’s second trip to Korea he brought a Moon Jar back to England with him, that Moon Jar is now at the British Museum. These Moon Jars have many things in common with Modernism, they both embrace Modernist principles of simplicity, truth to materials, form following function, and the idea that less is more.

Moon jars are from the Joseon Period (13921910), the jar at the Museum of Fine Art in Houston was made during the 18th century. They came from a time when the country was recovering from two different invasions and was finding its own national identity. . The craftspeople were anonymous, the construction of the pot reflected the clay from which it was formed. Where the top half was attached to the lower there is a line in the middle of the vessel that is evident and part of the spirit of the container. According to the thinkers of the time there is a life force that is in all natural objects. The asymmetry of the container caused by warping on the wheel or slumping in the kiln was not viewed as a deformity but rather nature expressing itself in the form. The white jar symbolizes the Confucian ideals of austerity, simplicity, and modesty. Imagine living with household objects whose beauty vibrates across cultures and centuries. According to the British Museum there are 20 remaining Moon Jars from the Joseon Dynasty now existing in the world, we have one on display every day in Houston at the Museum of Fine Arts. To add or remove users to lists, you must go to their profile; you cannot add or remove users from the Lists page. On a users profile, click on the gear icon drop down menu and select “Add to or Remove from Lists”. A pop-up menu will appear displaying all of your lists and you can check the lists you’d like to add the user to, or uncheck the lists you’d like to remove the user from. To view another users’ lists, go to their profile page and click on the gear icon drop-down menu and select Lists at the very bottom. If they have any public lists, they’ll appear here. To subscribe to one of their lists, click on the list you want and hit “Subscribe” in the upper right-hand corner. This list will now appear in your own lists page. You can view your customized List timelines by going to your lists page on your profile and clicking on the list you’d like to view. You can also view who has subscribed to your lists and members of each list on this page. To access the Lists page on Twitter’s mobile app, go to your profile, click the gear icon drop down menu and select Lists. HOUSTON, Texas – Alley Theatre Artistic Director Gregory Boyd announces the cast and creative team for As You Like It, the first play of 2015 in the “Alley Theatre @ UH” season. “All the world’s a stage” in this masterpiece about romance and mistaken identity. Elizabeth Bunch, Chris Hutchinson, James Black, Jeffrey Bean and Todd Waite lead the company in one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies. As You Like It traces the separate and intertwining journeys of Rosalind and Orlando, who have each been banished from their home and family. Independently, they each set out with a faithful friend and loyal servant and make their way through the Forest of Arden. Lovers discover lovers, fathers find daughters, brothers reclaim brothers, people are transformed and evil is converted in this delightful story of love. Alley Theatre Resident Company members Elizabeth Bunch as Rosalind, Chris Hutchinson as Orlando, and Todd Waite as Duke Frederick/Duke Ferdinand lead the cast. Owned and operated by New York transplants Amjad & Dimitra Khan, who moved to Texas from Queens, NY where Dimitra was born and raised, Euro Bakery & Café opened in December 2009. Dimitra’s dream was to open a New York style “hole in the wall” bakery. Euro Bakery started mainly as a bakery with some sandwiches and soups. When customers found out Dimitra was of Greek decent they began asking for Greek Food. Dimitra and Amjad decided to start adding Greek fare like PasNick Rama titsio, Filet Mignon and Chicken Souvlaki and Moussaka, to go along with their famous Pita Chips and Tzatziki sauce. Since they already had the Tzatziki sauce, Gyros were a natural for their next menu item. The hardest decision you will have walking into Euro Bakery is contemplating which dessert you are going to have out of their three cases as you enter this quaint little restaurant/bakery.

Here are some of the questions and answers from sitting down with this delightful couple: Nick: Where did the inspiration for your recipes come from? Euro Bakery & Cafe: The recipes we use are family recipes with Dimitra’s twist on

them. Dimitra loves to cook and bake and is addicted to the Food Network cooking shows. We moved to Texas and all the baked goods we could find here in the area tasted very commercial and processed, like Costco, Sam’s and the super markets. We could not find the quality & ingredients that we were used to in all the small New York bakeries we were used to visiting. Nick: Since desserts are what made you all famous, my favorite dessert here is the Galaktoboureko, Tell us what that is and also what are your best selling desserts? Euro Bakery & Cafe: The Galaktoboureko is layers of phyllo filled with a creamy semolina pudding between the phyllo layers and soaked in honey syrup. We sold over 200 whole ones Thanksgiving week; it is as authentic as you can get down here. We have excellent Baklava and traditional Greek Cookies like Kourambiedes (Greek Almond) Koulourakia (Greek Butter), Melomakarouna (Greek Honey Dipped). We also do many Italian Cookies like you will find in NY, Italian Rainbow Cookies, Butter Cookies, Jam Filled, Chocolate filled, Florentines and Italian Amaretti to name a few. We have a strong following on our Chocolate Decadence cake and our Apple Pie is made with a Shortbread cookie top. Napoleans (traditional, apricot and raspberry) and my famous lemon bars and fudge covered brownies to name a few best sellers. Nick: Do you do special occasions cakes? Euro Bakery & Cafe: Yes, we are known for all of our chocolate cakes, people say the photo by John Wade Chocolate Decadence (Layers of our rich chocolate cake, filled with French chocolate buttercream, iced with chocolate ganache with the side dipped in chocolate sprinkles) is the best they have ever eaten. Euro Bakery & Cafe: It is an icy frothy drink made with lots of Belgian Chocolate shavings, ice, and a little milk, topped with whipped cream. We take a 15lb European chocolate bar and shave it off by hand; you will not find Hershey bars anywhere near this establishment. Available in four flavors: Euro (which is semi-sweet and dark chocolate mixed), Dark, White and Mocha. Our Frozen Hot Chocolate truly tastes like you are drinking a fine imported chocolate bar and is such a great summer dessert. It is out of this world! Nick: I love mom and pop restaurants because the quality is usually better, and it seems you take pride in what you serve here. Tell me a little about that. Euro Bakery & Cafe: Everything here is made from scratch with the highest quality ingredients we can find, eggs, butter, flour; i.e. ”real food”. We eat everything here, our kids eat here and we tell our cooks/chefs if you are not comfortable feeding the food you are about to serve to your own family, don’t serve it to our guests. We even have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options on our lunch menu. Nick: I just had your Piekies for the first time, and they are delicious and so original. Please tell us in your words what a Piekie is and how did you come up with it? Euro Bakery & Cafe: Pickies crumble like a cookie but is filled like a pie. It’s my latest mini dessert invention since the cronut and

cake pop became so popular. The Pieckie {Pronounced - Pie Key) has a crust of buttery goodness that holds delicious fillings like almond apricot, raspberry cheesecake, and the chocolate fudge. We serve it up warm in a perfectly portioned individual size...that is if you can stop at one. I got the idea one day when I was at the restaurant craving two of my favorite desserts - a cookie and a pie, and I love that I can get my pie and cookie fix in one dessert. The Pikies have been available at the restaurant since Thanksgiving and have become one of the most popular items on the menu, often selling out.
