This season, hundreds of musicians will compete for positions with the Colorado Symphony. It all begins with the audition, the toughest job interview in music.

ustin Bartels has lost track of the number of times he’s been through it: Is it 45? 50? Since his first attempt at age 21, he’s boarded dozens of planes, perfected long lists of works, learned to steady his nerves and his attitude as he goes through a ritual familiar to all symphonic musicians: The Audition. “The audition is basically a microcosm of what the job is,” says Bartels. “The repertoire list you learn for the audition is a good indication of what you’ll play in the job. You’re expected to perform and execute, to listen and take direction, as if you already know everything.” Bartels won his current job as Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony in 2008, after four attempts. The first time, as a young music student at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he didn’t make it past the first round. During another try in 2003, his mind was
elsewhere – on his new fellowship with the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami, where he’d met Myroslava Ivanchenko, the violin player who would become his wife. Back at Boettcher Concert Hall again in 2005, he advanced to the semi-finals but faced an unexpected obstacle: the dressing on a sub sandwich he’d had for lunch had irritated his mouth, a major handicap for a brass player. “I never realized the potential negative effect of eating an hour before my audition. But these are the kinds of things you learn,” he says. “I went through a cycle. At first I had this naïveté and basically no experience. The next time I was sort of apathetic. And the third time there was a physical factor. I learned that you have to be totally prepared – mentally, physically. You can’t do anything stupid. It’s something you have to take very seriously every time.”

The Columbus Symphony, where he recently won the position of Principal Trumpet, was cutting health benefits. His wife was seven months pregnant. This time, he had to nail it. “I didn’t know how badly I wanted it until I played the audition,” he says. But a few notes into an excerpt from Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, blowing from behind a screen that separated him from the small, expert audience, he realized he couldn’t breathe. “I hadn’t been to Colorado in a while. I wasn’t prepared for the altitude. I stopped deliberately, which I think was a surprise to the committee, but when I started again, it was fine,” he says. “The common thought among musicians is that you can’t make a mistake, but that isn’t true. They’re listening for all kinds of things: style, character, the quality of sound. Note perfection is just one part of it.” Two rounds and 48 hours later, Bartels was named Principal Trumpet for the Colorado Symphony. It was the kind of moment that propels professional musicians through years of intensive training, study, expense and sacrifice. Throughout the 2013/14 season, the Colorado Symphony will host dozens of players hoping to fill positions vacated by section changes and the retirement of a storied class of players, including cellists George Banks and Eric Bertoluzzi, violist Bobbie Hill, violinists Keith Howard and Gary Goble, and bassist Chet Hampson. On average, the Colorado Symphoy will field one hundred résumés for every opening, sent in
by professional musicians from around world. Of those, about sixty will fly to Denver, at their own expense, for the chance to perform for a panel of judges, including Music Director Andrew Litton, section leaders and senior members of the orchestra’s artistic committee. The audition process is purposely “blind” – players perform behind screens that conceal their appearance and identity; carpets on the floor obscure the sounds of players’ shoes on the stage, muting cues about gender, size and mobility. The question of who advances and who does not is answered in the ears, and minds, of the committee members. “The competition is the ultimate way we as an institution protect the artistic quality of our product, how we define and control the integrity of the people on our stage,” says Anthony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony. “The judges are listening for a complete musician, someone who is rhythmically impeccable, with perfect intonation, who plays in a stylistic manner consistent with the aesthetic of the composer and the excerpt. They must have knowledge of the repertoire, and what else is happening in the orchestra. You can only know some of these things by experience. We’re looking for a candidate who can respond to any challenges -- or curveballs -- all skills required to fit into an ensemble.” Winning a spot in the Colorado Symphony is not unlike earning a spot on a major sports team, adds Pierce. Musicians spend years perfecting their craft, most beginning as children, then

compete against the industry’s very best players. Success or failure is determined by one of the world’s fastest job interviews. Most last just ten minutes. Many musicians make dozens of attempts before landing the perfect position. Some never do. “There are more professional athletes in Denver than there are nationally auditioned professional musicians,” says Pierce. “The same people take our auditions as take the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra. There are only so many jobs out there. It’s a very exciting process, because we have a chance to identify someone who is possibly going to become a new member of the family, and you never know who it’s going to be.” Karl Fenner was already a member of the Colorado Symphony family in June 2012, when he took the most important audition of his career so far. He’d served in the bass section since October 2007, his first major job since dreams of playing professionally hatched at age 14. Like hundreds of others, he’d seen the post in The International Musician, the official news arm of the American Federation of Musicians, announcing that the Colorado Symphony was auditioning for Principal Bass. “All of the years of practicing, auditioning and performing inspired me to set my artistry to a higher level,” says Fenner. “I was ready to put myself on the line, to see how I would fare when I set myself against a pool of candidates and a

level of competition I hadn’t yet experienced.” Fenner spent six weeks working through a longer and more complicated list of audition excerpts he would be expected to play to perfection for a committee that included musicians he worked and played with every week. As the date drew near, Fenner purposely did not engage orchestra members he knew were involved with the audition process.

“The idea of going in and playing and advancing, without my colleagues knowing it was me, that was a major source of pride,” he says. “I wanted to go in and win completely on my own.” After two tension-filled days of competition against more than forty world-class players, Fenner won the job of Principal Bass. And the audition didn’t stop there: Like all new, nontenured members of the Colorado Symphony, Fenner faces a two-year, peer-led review process that will partly determine the shape of his career, and his future. “There’s an idea I repeat to myself and to my students: Never look at any audition as an endpoint,” Fenner says. “As important as auditions are, they’re just part of a larger process of growth and perseverance. I say, ‘I won Principal Bass of the Colorado Symphony on my 16th audition. But there were 14 I went to and didn’t win.’ Going to those improved the character of my playing. As you’re preparing for a career, a lot of emotional resilience is important. You have to be able to say that no matter what happens in those ten minutes, this is something you’re committed to until you’re successful.”

ANDREW LITTON, conductor Andrew Litton, Music Director of Norway’s Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Artistic Director of the Minnesota Orchestra’s Sommerfest, and Conductor Laureate of Britain’s Bournemouth Symphony, recently also became Music Director of the Colorado Symphony. He guest conducts the world’s leading orchestras and opera companies and has a discography of over 120 recordings with awards including America’s Grammy, France’s Diapason d’Or, and many British and other honors. First appointed Bergen Philharmonic Music Director in 2003, Litton will celebrate the orchestra’s 250th Anniversary in 2015. It is one of the world’s longest established orchestras. In recognition of Litton’s achievements with the Bergen Philharmonic, Norway’s King Harald knighted Litton with the Royal Order of Merit. Under Litton the Bergen Philharmonic has taken numerous tours, including debuts at the London BBC Proms and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, as well as appearances at Vienna’s Musikverein, Berlin’s Philharmonie, and New York’s Carnegie Hall - the capstone of its first American tour in 40 years. Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic record for the BIS and Hyperion labels, winning extraordinary critical acclaim for their Mendelssohn, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev series. Andrew Litton, a graduate of the Fieldston School, New York, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard in piano and conducting. BRANFORD MARSALIS, saxophone NEA Jazz Master, renowned Grammy Award®-winning saxophonist and Tony Award® nominee composer Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. Leader of one of the finest jazz quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after in the classical world by such acclaimed orchestras as the Chicago, Detroit, Düsseldorf, and North Carolina Symphonies and the New York Philharmonic. The New Orleans native was born into one of the city’s most distinguished musical families, which includes patriarch/pianist/educator Ellis and Branford’s siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason. Having gained initial acclaim through his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Marsalis also performed and recorded with jazz giants including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins. MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES BORODIN: Overture to Prince Igor Scored for 2 flutes and piccolo, oboes, clarinets and bassoons in pairs, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings. Duration is 10 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on March 12-14, 2010, with Peter Oundjian conducting. For much of his professional life, Alexander Borodin (1833 – 1887) taught chemistry. His spare time, however, was devoted to music, and students attested that he kept a piano in the chemistry lab so as to work on compositions when time permitted. Apparently, time between active experiments was highly limited, as Borodin completed all too few compositions, mostly songs, chamber music, and piano pieces. There are also two symphonies and one grand opera, the nationalistic spectacle Prince Igor, left unfinished when Borodin was felled by a heart attack. The story of Prince Igor might have ended there, were it not for the composer’s influential friends in the music world. Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov had been badgering him for years about completing the opera, and had had the sketches in his hands. Moreover, once when Rimsky and Alexander Glazunov had both come to visit, Borodin had sat down at the piano and improvised for them the intended overture. No one wrote it down at the time, but Glazunov, claiming he remembered it, sketched it out and ran it by Rimsky for his approval. Between them, they crafted the only overture to now bear Prince Igor’s name. The overture’s lyrically somber opening leads to heroic and exuberant passages, building at last to a triumphant conclusion. Throughout, there is much bass and woodwind color amidst the strings. It may not be in Borodin’s handwriting, but it is certainly his style.

GLAZUNOV: Saxophone Concerto in E-flat major, Op. 109 The piece is scored for saxophone solo and string orchestra. Duration is 13 minutes. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony. Alexander Glazunov (1865 – 1936) was a flawed genius. It was his drunken conducting that ruined the premiere of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1, yet it was also he who saved the overture to Borodin’s Prince Igor from non-existence. As a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he oversaw the work of some of the most prominent members of Russia’s next generation, including Dmitri Shostakovich. As for Glazunov’s own music, it is vibrant, colorful, and varied. Thanks to spending his retirement years in Paris, it is also safely insulated from Soviet control. Only in Paris would a Russian-born composer have been inspired to write music for saxophones. Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto, dating from the last year of his life, is in one movement, rather than the usual three. However, tempo changes allow listeners to imagine the usual alternation of fast, slow, and fast tempos. Melodies may be introduced by the orchestra, but they are soon handed over to the saxophonist, who elaborates upon them, making even more of the base material. Long legato lines alternate with brisker, more nimble ones, drawing upon the diverse strengths of the solo instrument. By the final pages, Glazunov builds the music into almost fuguelike complexity, with the soloist and the orchestra each occupied with different melodic ideas at the same time. At publication, the concerto was dedicated to saxophone virtuoso Sigurd Raschèr, one of few saxophonists at that time who would have been able to manage its challenges. MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES WILLIAMS: Escapades from Catch Me If You Can for Saxophone and Orchestra In addition to the solo alto saxophone, the work is scored for 3 flutes (3rd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes (2nd doubling English horn), 3 clarinets (2nd and 3rd doubling bass clarinet), alto sax, 2 bassoons (2nd doubling contrabassoon), 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, piano (doubling celesta), and strings. This is the first performance by the Colorado Symphony. Escapades derives from the 2002 Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can, telling of Frank Abagnale Jr., a skilled and charming con man (played by Leonardo di Caprio), ever pursuing new adventures. In that context, Williams’ new title Escapades is ideally suited to the source material. Much of the film is set in the early 1960s, which composer John Williams (b. 1932) chose to evoke with soft jazz moods. Sometimes these are bluesy, at other, more nimble of expression, and regularly featuring prominent saxophone lines. Those characteristics led to a score readily adapted into a saxophone concerto. Its three movements allow for more substantial orchestral support than in the original film, though one still finds prominent use of jazzy percussion, especially the vibraphone. Its shimmery voice played a prominent role in much of ‘60s jazz, especially in the care of Lionel Hampton, and is ideal for evoking the scenes that Williams had in mind. The first movement, “Closing In,” is intended by Williams to represent the hunt by the FBI to solve the mystery of Frank and bring him to justice. In mood, it’s slinky, finger-snapping cool jazz, rather nocturnal in nature, though with passages of stronger intensity. “Reflections,” the second movement, brings out a bluesy, wistful atmosphere; Williams imagines this as capturing the spirit of Frank’s fractured family. Jaunty and energetic moods arrive for the final movement, “Joy Ride,” with Frank not just making off in a sporty stolen car but embarking on a large range of fraudulent adventures. Here one finds the most overtly virtuosic solo writing of the entire work. As a whole, the work captures the varied voices that an alto saxophone can express.

The last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on March 15-17, 2002, with Pavel Kogan conducting. Throughout his life, Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975) labored under a Soviet system that placed a premium on ideology. Western ideals were roundly rejected by those in power, and any artist or composer who did not publicly endorse the party line could expect to find his works suppressed. Shostakovich, as a teen-aged prodigy, had earned official accolades. However, reversals would follow; there were years when his works could not be performed in the Soviet Union, and when the composer himself narrowly escaped transportation to Siberia. On March 5, 1953, Stalin died. The Communist state did not immediately disappear, but the

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES autocrat’s absence made possible a measurably greater degree of free expression. Shostakovich began his Symphony No. 10 shortly after Stalin’s death, completing it that fall. With its premiere in Moscow December 17, 1953, audiences found that Shostakovich had produced a symphony imbued with intense emotion, alternately violent and eloquent, and none of it supportive of Soviet ideology. Structurally speaking, the work is unusual in that none of its movements bears a particularly slow tempo. In contrast to the long-enduring expectation that all symphonies should offer a restful pace for one of their central movements, Shostakovich instead opts for a near-continuous sense of tension. For a 20th century composer working under Stalin’s thumb, the mood of frenetic energy and dark irony is utterly a propos. The symphony’s first movement is nearly as long as the other three movements together. This movement also borrows a phrase from Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (heard on the clarinet). Later in the work, there is a four-note note motif of D-E-flat-C-B which musicologists like to point out represents the composer himself, since in old Germanic notation, the pitch E-flat is denoted as S, B is denoted as H, thus making these four notes the composer’s first initial and the first three letters of his last name. Shostakovich knew the old notation well, and cannot have combined these four pitches unintentionally. Thus, in musical terms, we have the old guard – Mahler – and the current guard – Shostakovich himself – rising above the darkness of the Stalin years. POPS BIOGRAPHIES SCOTT O’NEIL, resident conductor This is Scott O’Neil’s eighth season with the Colorado Symphony, and his third full season as resident conductor. O’Neil maintains a strong commitment to making music of the highest quality accessible to young audiences. He served as associate conductor for the Utah Symphony, which he joined in August 2000. O’Neil has guest conducted the Houston Symphony, Houston Youth Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Florida Philharmonic, Tulsa Philharmonic, Portland Symphony (Maine), the Lubbock Symphony, the Boise Philharmonic, the Salt Lake Symphony and the Columbus Symphony in Ohio. O’Neil studied piano performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory, served as the assistant conductor of the Eastman School Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Rice University, where he was the director of the Campanile Orchestra, a community/university orchestra. In 1999 he served as director of orchestras at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. In the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by the League of American Orchestras (LAO) to conduct an orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and advanced students from the University of Southern California in Synergy, a program created to promote young, contemporary composers. Also in the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by LAO to appear on the Conductor Preview with the Jacksonville Symphony. O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances on each of the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday Series.
