od creates human beings with myriad of differences, either personal or bloodline group. Individually, the differences are shown in the sex, face, complexion, and body posture. Each individual also has detailed natural differences, such as desires, hopes and goals, and intuitions even if they were born twins. The bloodline aspect creates various races, ethnic groups, nations, and languages that in turn form typical identity to recognize each other. Clothing also comes in various models, patterns and colors as well as food with thousand tastes, traditional houses and traditions that continue to prevail. In addition, human beings interact and communicate in various languages, accents or dialects that often sound unique to others' ears. They all become a rainbow in our life and an undeniable diversity, which makes our life full of colors. As part of life dynamics, life diversity, in addition to harmonious relations in

cultural and structural integrity, often leads to friction. It occurs usually when certain party is too aggressive in showing its differences in the neighborhood, even force others to follow and adjust its color. This is exacerbated by unfriendly communication pattern that the neighborhood often refuses and fights in classical ways to preserve its existence. World's history gives us lessons of the negative record of an individual, even a country that being different and wishing to be considered greater, richer, more famous and even feel more eligible and powerful through arrogance and cruelty that make them a few friends and a lot of enemies, less peaceful due to conflict intention with many rival locking their arms to target them for protection. To avoid useless friction, a call for peace is the most popular call in the world. The idea is as old as the life of human existence, since the time the first human being Adam, the conflict due to

Batu Hijau differences in choice and desire occurred between his sons Cain and Abel. Besides peace, we also hear calls for unity. In its simple definition, it is not a call for uniformity but a bond in common issues in synergy to the approved limits to create a better life order for all. Uniformity in certain community, such as clothes (uniform), flag or symbols, does not mean a self-distinction from others, but rather to an identity and discipline. In this sense, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) as our employer has set the work uniform regulation to wear with three sets of uniform a year and the type of clothes that is adjusted to the work area (CLA, 01 January 2013 - 31 December 2014, Article 43, work uniform, paragraph 1 and 2 p. 33), and of course, with significant financial value. Human history has proved that life has selected various beliefs that grow and develop, has accepted and maintained the good and useful ones, and has rejected the bad and destructive ones. Thus, it is the domain of where the believers can have a fair competition to offer the neighborhood

the truth and the goodness of their belief creatively. The call of wisdom, good lessons and scientific discussions are elegant and universal ways and the response to overacting attitude against ourselves, at least at equal matters, is not excessive while patience is excellence. In the norms, textual and practical, there is a sufficient room for conflict settlement which if it occurs - i.e. reconciliation in which relevant parties forgive each other and reform their commitment to respect each other, observe and perform their obligation to satisfy others' right and vice versa. The stronger our commitment the narrower the room for conflict. Any conflict only distinguishes those who still discriminate and are persistent to the neighborhood, will collect garbage of isms rejected by the history. On the other those who continue to reach their star through achievement and contribution will stand out. When we have to be different, it should be a position to defend the truth and spread it to the community albeit other people choose the other way [AMS].

Blake expressed his astonishment to the students who were taking the Orientation and Introduction to the Campus of Sumbawa University of Technology (RESPEK UTS 2013). The university is just less than three years old but the freshmen show a good command in English. "Learning English is important," said Blake. He called on the student to study hard and focus on their interest and surely better job opportunity than in PTNNT will widely open. "Job opportunity is not only in PTNNT; there are a lot more industries out there with vast and promising job opportunities," he added in response to a metallurgy student asking the opportunity at PTNNT. Blake also motivated the students. "I am just like you. I come from a small city in

Sustainable mining In addition to motivation, Blake also shared his knowledge on global business dynamics. He asserted that essentially, mining has to bring shared benefits to the government, community and company. To make a sustainable mining, the company should have four pillars in building the integrity. First, it should have reliable, skilled, educated and experienced employees. Secondly, occupational safety with zero harm that means a company that neglect its OHS will have poor performance, and vice versa. Third, good environmental management and protection by meeting or exceeding the standards defined by the government. Fourth, to build good relations

with the government and local community. "Thus, the word harmony becomes the key to sustainable mining," added he. With regard to PTNNT's contribution, Blake explained that to date the company has contributed over US$3.2 billion to the state in the form of taxes, royalties and non-tax state revenues (PNBP). "About US$4.9 billion for employees' salary, goods and service procurement and community development programs," said he. Meanwhile UTS Rector Dr. H Zulkieflimansyah, MSc., who accompanied him called on the students to take advantages from the insight given and get motivated over the visit of PTNNT high rank official to the campus. After the lecture, Blake Rhode had a discussion with Sumbawa Regent and lines of Sumbawa leaders on PTNNT's current situation.

Elaine releases baby turtle at Maluk Beach (left) and visits Comdev Center Benete (right).

For example, agriculture sector. In addition to water supply for farming activity, Newmont provides the community with various modern farming techniques. "It is obvious that Newmont should become a partner for the community," said she. Thus, she considered Newmont's approach very good. An approach that really reaches all people's needs and it is very importance for Newmont's reputation globally. "Because, Newmont's presence at Batu Hijau is to hear the needs of the community around the mine," she said. She added that mining surely brings impacts to the nature, yet what the company gets from mining must bring benefits to the country and the people. Therefore, with simultaneous reclamation at Batu Hijau, the company shows its commitment to recovering the exploited land. She expects what Batu Hijau has done is followed by other mines. Elaine also appreciates the employees' commitment to work safety. Good safety performance is an achievement to be proud of for the sustainability of the mine in the future. It is of course the realization of leadership and good strategy to cope with challenges faced by Newmont global. Challenges like geo-political, environmental and social risks affect Newmont's profitability, progress and reputation. As such, strong Sustainability & External Relations (S&ER) is necessary to bring positive impact to Newmont success today and in the future. "Batu Hijau's success is very important for Newmont Global's reputation," asserted she. Meanwhile in a separate location, Country Manager Blake Rhodes expressed his gratitude and highly appreciated PTNNT Social Responsibility team on its performance to maintain Newmont's reputation.

Rokatenda Disaster

20-hour Trip for Humanitarian Mission

PTNNT FES Team coordinates once it arrives at the DISASTER ALERT COMMAND POST (top). The team provides humanitarian assistance for refugees (botom).

encana The disaster caused by the B eruption of Rokatenda mountain, which is located on Palue Island, SIKKA Subdistrict, East Nusa Tenggara, early August, has awakened our sense of humanity. The disaster took the lives of five people and damaged the locals' houses. More than 1000 people were forcefully evacuated away from the island to a number of nearest safe shelters to avoid more casualties. PTNNT management immediately responded upon hearing about the disaster news. It immediately coordinated with RI Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources (MEMR) in Jakarta and the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (NBDM). The coordination decided to send PTNNT's Disaster Alert special team to provide assistance for casualties and refugees of the disaster. "Since the disaster location is located very far away from the company's location and as a part of the National Disaster

Alert Team under MEMR, we are called for to provide necessary aids. Therefore, following coordination with DEMR, we decided to send a FES special team to Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara," said Wawan Syafwanuddin, PTNNT General Supervisor Fire Emergency Services. A team of six personnel departed in last 11 August to the shelter area. The team consisted of five PTNNT FES personnel and one ISOS Clinic Buin Batu paramedic. A number of FES members that were just recruited from around the mine area were also involved in the operation. "[Their involvement aims] to improve their knowledge, experience and the opportunity as well to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired all this time," he added. Syamsuddin was appointed as the team leader as he is one of PTNN'sT FES Senior Station Officers and is experienced in providing aids for casualties of natural disasters that occurred in Indonesia a few

Batu Hijau years ago, Wawan continued. The travel to reach the disaster location was not as easy as the team imagined. In order to reach Sikka Regency, the team had to drive from West Manggarai Regency to Sikka Regency for 20 hours. "We have to pass through four regencies to reach Maumere, Sikka Regency though hard road condition," Syamsuddin said. "Thanks God, we remained in good condition after travelling through a hard trip," he added. Immediately after arriving at Maumere, Sikka Regency Capital, the team coordinated with the ROKATENDA Mountain EMERGENCY ALERT COMMAND POST and erected MEMR & PTNNT DISASTER ALERT COMAND POST. Out of coordination with the EMERGENCY ALERT COMMAND POST and Regional Disaster Management Agency, PTNNT FES Team was requested to provide assistance

at the temporary shelter location only. It was due to very limited transportation facilities to PALUE Island where they had to use small boats for six hours and was quite risky to reach the island as Rokatenda Mountain kept on emitting hot cloud. During its operation at the shelter location, PTNNT FES Team carried out many activities, such as medical treatment, public toilet and kitchen facility construction, and providing entertainment for children refugees. "In addition to medical treatment and drug aid, we provide fund assistance of Rp50,000,000 that was directly received by Sikka Regional Secretary in the presence of local officials," Syamsuddin stated. He added that they were deeply grateful for the assistance that they provided and they expected that other companies could follow what PTNNT has demonstrated in efforts to help others who were in hardships. After a six-day humanitarian operation, PTNNT FES Team returned to Batu Hijau. The operation had become an additional record for the team that has been involved in similar operation for several times in Indonesia. Padang earthquakes, Taliwang and Jakarta floods, Bima and Jogja earthquakes, Kintamani Bali land slide, Merapi mountain Jogjakarta eruption, and some other natural disasters in the West Nusa Tenggara Province were natural disasters that PTNNT FES was involved in their management. Therefore, it is not surprising that Indonesian MEMR highly relies on the team in various natural disasters in Indonesia. "We have to be prepared to provide safe and quick responses according to our motto "Proud to Respond Safely & Quickly". Bravo FES PTNNT!

Voluntary Sustainable Work Force Program (SWP)

Increasing Eficiency and Effectivity

T

he global mining industry continues to struggle with volatile metal prices and steadily rising costs. In response to this environment, mining companies are making every effort to run their operations more efficiently and effectively for their long-term futures At PTNNT, we have implemented many measures over the past year to reduce our operational costs and improve productivity. In our efforts to be more efficient and effective and to manage costs in all areas, we have over the past several months, undertaken a thorough Organizational Review for purposes of streamlining our organization. As a result of the Organizational Review, in October and November 2013, PTNNT will implement the Sustainable Work Force Program (SWP) designed to create a more efficient organization through voluntary early retirement and resignations. This program is one of our measures to improve business efficiency and cost reduction of our operation. It is not a unilateral employment termination but a business efficiency effort program designed to reduce a number of PTNNT

employees through voluntary early retirement and resignations based upon age category “It is not a unilateral employment termination program. In this program, the employee will be able to volunteer for early retirement and a request to retire based on age category,” said Martiono Hadianto, PTNNT President Director. PTNNT is committed to ensuring that this voluntary process will be fair and transparent, that entitlements will be paid in compliance with all applicable laws and government regulations, and that attractive special incentives will be timely paid. “The Company is committed to ensuring that this voluntary process will be carried out fairly. Each employee participating in the SWP program will be provided with attractive and fair compensation package”, Martiono added. New Benete Bus Station Comes into Operation

T

he Benete bus station can no longer meet company requirements increas ingly. Such a limited capacity frequently interrupts traffic flow at the primary access road (PAR) even it potentially causes accidents. In addition, long vehicle queues from both directions commonly occur during certain hours. This situation has made Benete bus station is increasingly uncomfortable and potentially causes unsafe conditions. PTNNT General Supervisor Transportation Masra Jayadi stated that crowded traffic flow during certain hours or during dropping and picking up processes at the same points caused passenger accumulation and a long queue of buses that were about to leave and arrived at the station. "The bus station capacity is no longer adequate for existing vehicles," he said. To vercome the problem, the management has expanded the bus station area and equips it with toilets, bus shelters and pedestrian area. Currently, the station construction has been completed dan is ready to put into operation. "Only a few minor works are still under completion," he stated.

With such expansion, he continued, the bus station capacity increases from 24 to 55 buses. The drop and pick- up areas are separated, such that passenger traffic is more orderly. In addition, safety fence is constructed for security and safety purposes. He stated that the additional bus shelter construction increases passenger comfort. It is because the main entrance and exit gates are separated. The entrance gate directly leads to old bus station and the exit gate is special for departing vehicles through the new bus station. "We expect that employees notice some alterations made at the bus station, such as the old bus station is made as an arrival bus station and the new bus station is made as a departure bus station," he explained. In addition to the alterations, a paved walkway is available for pedestrian comfort. Passengers are allowed to wait for the bus at the bus shelters only. "In relation to the bus station expansion, we expect that all employees comply with applicable rules for their comfort and safety," he asked.

Working Faster with Conveyor

s a catering services provider at Batu Hijau, Prasmanindo Boga Utama (PBU) must work fast and professional because thousands of pack meals must be delivered on time every day. To satisfy the requirement, PBU views that it is not enough to rely only on employees' labor work. Then, using supporting tools, such as a conveyor, is one of the options. According to PBU's Executive Chef Deddie Jangkar, packing the meals not only requires a lot of employees but is also time consuming. Therefore, PTNNT has installed a 12-m conveyor to facilitate and accelerate the process. "We have to supply 5500 pack meals for a day. By installing the conveyor, packing process is faster and practical," he said at Town site, Wednesday (04/09). PBU used to assign 12 employees for packing the meals. However, using the conveyor, it only needs 8. The process

starts at 09:00 a.m. and by 11.00 a.m. the meals are received by the clients. To ensure the best services in serving healthy, hygienic foods, PBU specifically employs four expatriates who are tasked to ensure the quality of foods made so that it is healthy and safe to consume. "That is the way PBU provides professional services through the best operations for the satisfaction for customers and clients," he said. A device called bhainmerrie, which serves as a heater, is used to maintain the quality of foods during the packing process. The foods are then put in a combro (a kind of plastic box) as a means to move foods that are ready to distribute," he said. Deddie said to date the company still heard complaints from several clients on the foods served. In response, he convinced clients that the foods served have

"However, please be advised that the foods we serve meet healthy, safe food standards," he said. As the selected partner for catering services, PBU will continue to provide and improve its professional services with healthy, safe foods." We have to sort out healthy and delicious foods," he said. Deddie added that healthy, safe foods are almost 90pct not delicious. It means

that being delicious may be dangerous for our health. For example, the habit of eating condiment (sambal) and curry (gulai), which has a lot of cooking oil, is clearly dangerous for those who suffer certain diseases. "They are indeed delicious but unhealthy," he said. Deddie's statement was echoed by PTNNT Supervisor Camp and Catering Muhamad Solahudin who said PBU indeed tried hard to satisfy client's need. However, it depends on the clients whether they will choose healthy, safe foods or only look for delicious ones.

urrently, PTNNT Environment Department team is preparing the ex-mine area reclamation as reclamation forest at Ujat, Tongoloka and Kanloka areas. Coconut net (coconet) installation at the areas is almost completed. The installed areas include catch bench, trims and slopes. Herman, Specialist Reclamation Forrest Revegetation, explained that cleared land reclamation is completed about 40% or 721.54 hectares, while the total of cleared land up to the 6th phase of the mine is 2,531.72 hectares since 2000. He added that the coconet installation is intended to reduce surface water flow speed on reclaimed slopes in order to control erosion. "Besides controlling erosion, coconet also functions as cocofeed catcher and holder during hydroseeding process," he stated. Local company can now produce coconet. "We used to get coconet from Bogor. Now we have easy access to get it from local supplier," said Herman. PTNNT progressively puts maximum efforts to conduct reclamation on cleared areas. Reclamation starts from cultivation of local vegetation seedlings to be planted as soon as possible on cleared areas to minimize environmental disturbance.

are for the environment must not always come from a company with big finance and great resources. A self-supporting community or individual may as well do it, and sometimes they demonstrate even better awareness than that of the companies'. Such awareness is shown by Maluk Surfing Skateboard Club - a group of young surfers caring for preservation of Maluk beach. "We care for Maluk beach because

that's where we live, play and set our dreams," said Raden Iponk - MSCC leader. He added that not everybody cares for the environment. That's why they are committed to implementing their action. "Who else would do it if not us," said Iponk, an enthusiast young man who can set an example for other young men in around Maluk beach. Beach clean up and coral reef conservation in Maluk beach are two activities

Iponk and friends often do. They have spent quite lot of money for that action. They have gone thru many failures and they do not expect much to receive assistance from the government or other private organizations around Maluk beach. "It's not easy but we'll keep trying to be independent," said Iponk. He hopes PTNNT can provide training on coral reef transplantation for MSCC members. Hopefully, MSCC's motto "My beautiful beach, your beautiful future" can be achieved in the near future.

Theoretical (classroom) and in-field (practice) training on oil spill handling in Benete bay.

he high activities of ships entering or exiting Benete dedicated port in West Sumbawa Regency triggers safety concerns of the area, such as oil spill into Benete waters. Moreover, to date PTNNT uses sea transportation to transport fuel, where spills may occur. During the opening of Oil Spill Management level-1 Training held at ex-messhall Benete, on Friday (23/8), Juvensius Goan, PTNNT Port Operations Manager, said well spill management is necessary to anticipate spill case on the sea. He added that when the management and oil spill management team are established, loading/unloading activities at Benete port would surely run smoothly and potential losses can be minimized. "No more delayed activity due to lack of knowledge on oil spill handling," said Juven. In addition, this preventive measure will also ensure preservation of marine flora and fauna around Benete bay. That is in line with PTNNT's principal commitment to environmental management. The Oil Spill Management Training - Level 1 was attended by 85 trainees from many departments within PTNNT. Training was divided into three levels, i.e. for operators, commanders and management. During the three-day training, partici-

pants got knowledge on government regulations on spill management, process and behaviors of oil in the water, and types of equipment and techniques used to handle spill. Theoretical materials were delivered in class for two days, followed by one-day infield practice training. "This field training is important to make participants familiar with situation so that they can make quick decisions and consideration," said Juven. One of the participants from Environmental Dept. found the training very useful. "Despite the fact that oil spill rarely occurs in Benete bay, I find this training very important to be conducted by the company and is useful, particularly when spill occurs in a big scale," said Dwi Putro Arivianto, PTNNT Environmental Ecology Supervisor. He added, in the particular activity the Environment Dept. assumes the role for taking oil spil samples and ensuring that the spilled area is cleaned up. The training was delivered by PERTAMINA TRAINING CENTER Sungai Gerong, South Sumatera that has experience and certification on the subject matter. Several PTNNT departments join the training including Port Operations, Process (Filter Plant), SHLP, Transport, and government offices (Transportation and Customs Office Benete).

nprocedural practices in giving disciplinary sanctions to subordinates are considered to be the source of conflict between the company and employees. In an effort to anticipate potential conflict, PTNNT Industrial Relations personnel are required to provide information more often to all senior staff in order to ensure favorable industrial relations. Agussalim, Industrial Relations General Supervisor, said many cases/practices in the field were not addressed according to CLA and applicable regulations due to CLA amendments and changes to the organizational structure within the company. In anticipation of the issue, the Human Resources Department holds a two-day workshop (21-22/08) on disciplinary sanction mechanisms at the Concentrator Training Center for 500 Frontline Supervisors up to Superintendents. "Apart from reminding the Frontline Supervisors on correct procedures, we also provide information on the mechanisms of coaching and counseling," said Agus during the workshop, Wednesday (21/08). Agus stressed out the importance of communication with subordinates. One should not wait until the situation becomes complicated to make an approach. "Supervisor's care is needed before serious violation is committed," said Agus. In order to have better understanding on company's disciplinary mechanisms, participants were required to conduct simulation on communication technique to subordinates on cases that had occurred and might occur in the future. During simulation, participants practiced what they had learned on several cases they faced. Meantime, new Supervisors could make it valuable experience to be implemented at the workplace. As for subordinates who have been indicated to have committed violation, Agus stressed out the need to make personal approaches first so that they can have their supervisor's attention. In other words, coaching should be attempted before imposing disciplinary actions. "When rules are to be reinforced, at least coaching and counseling must have been conducted by making notes in each meeting. The notes may become backups in determining appropriate disciplinary actions to be imposed," he said. Senior Foreman Hauling Dian Pitala said he was glad to join the workshop because he received new insights and experiences on communication techniques with subordinates. He hoped the training could continue so that the provisions set forth in the CLA can be implemented in an easier manner in the field. TRAINING Training Lifeguard

Prevent Accident and Know What to do

T

he word 'Lifeguard' may lead our mind to David Hasselhoff's Bay watch - a film portraying the life of American beach coast guards. This favorite film could just become world's box office. Not only depicting life guarding, the film is starred by many beautiful and sexy lifeguard girls. Ehmm‌. However, just drop Baywatch and let's talk about the lifeguard training conducted at the Townsite involving five PTNNT lifeguards assigned at Townsite swimming pool. Although not everyone knows the tasks of a lifeguard, the film would have given adequate overview of a lifeguard's tasks. "Lifeguard's role is to prevent accident from occurring and know what to do when accident happens," said Ronald Less, the Balanced Life program instructor. He added that during a serious accident, a lifeguard must know how to save one's life until medical team arrives to provide appropriate treatment. That is why before lifeguard training began, the first question given to all participants was whether they're aware of lifeguards' roles? "Most of them were not

sure about the question and hesitated to answer," said Ron who used to be a Duty Manager of a Recreation Center in Scotland, a facility responsible to train lifeguards and provide them with skills to become responsible lifeguards. Batu Hijau lifeguard training was conducted for six weeks. The lifeguards were trained how to provide responses during emergency and to save one's life from drowning. They were also trained to help swimmer to reach the other end of the pool and provide help after reaching the pool's side. In addition, the lifeguards were also tested to swim within a limited time. The result is two of five lifeguards passed the test. "We encourage those who failed to succeed," said Ron. Participants were also given scenarios to rescue a person with back-bone injury and help him get out of the pool without causing a more severe injury to the victim. "This lifeguard training must be held when you have swimming pool facility or located near water area. We can immediately and appropriately avoid further injury to the victim," said Ron.

Releasing Turtle at Sampar Beach, Lunyuk

T

he drop in the number of turtle population at the southern beach, especially at Lunyuk subdistrict drives concerns of the community on the extinction of these endangered animals. According to the locals, the low number of turtles landing in the area indicates the disturbance to the turtle habitat to hatch in the area. In response to the community members' concern, PTNNT management in cooperation with Community Self-Reliance Organization (NGO) KSM Mas Geranta established a hatchling facility around Sampar Goal beach, Lunyuk, in April. "To date, some 240 hawksbill turtle eggs and 230 green turtle eggs have been put into the hatchery program. Out of the eggs, 55 of them were hatched and directly released to the sea. Five of them were missing, and 5 were dead. The remaining 200 eggs have hatched," Wawan Irawansyah, KSM Mas Geranta chairperson, said. In addition to the hatchery program, to increase environmental care, on Wed.

(04/09) PTNNT and KSM Mas Geranta invited primary and junior high school students, and the community members of the Lunyuk subdistrict to release 76 turtle hatclings in the white sandy beach of Sampar Goal, Emang Lestari village, Lunyuk Sub-district. PTNNT CSR Manager Syarafuddin Jarot, the Head of Mining and Energy Office of Sumbawa Ir. A Rahim, several BKSDA Sumbawa staff, some PTNNT staff and teachers participated in the hatcling release program. Syarafuddin Jarot said the activity is part of PTNNT's programs to support the government programs, especially in green turtle conservation. "In the future, similar activity will be held since it is in line with PTNNT's value on care for the environment," Jarot said. He said that the turtle is the most unique animal in the world, because it will return to the place where it was hactched some 30-40 years later for laying eggs. He admitted that hatchery as one of method to conserve turtle is very hard to do, because out of hundreds and even thousands of hatched eggs, only 1 percent can survive to reach mature age and return to lay eggs. Therefore, he encouraged the local community to maintain Emang beach's cleanliness, to support the turtle habitat. It will attract tourists that in turn will increase the community's income. Meanwhile, the Office Head Ir. A Rahim appreciated PTNNT and other parties' efforts to conserve turtles. "We appreciate this turtle hatchlings release program to motivate young generation to be more caring for the environment," he said after the event.

nderstanding the importance of social responsibility in Batu Hijau, is not only enforced by PTNNT, but also other PTNNT's business partners. PT TRAKINDO UTAMA is one of the companies that understand the importance of the company's social responsibility. In cooperating with PTNNT, PT. Trakindo Batu Hijau conducted community and environment health programs by conducting clean-up day in villages around Batu Hijau mine. "All companies, including PTNNT, TRAKINDO, are committed to prioritizing employees' health and safety. At the same time those companies pay attention and try their best to assist the community around the mine in improving their health and environmental cleanliness in line with the company's effort on the community social responsibility," said Andreas Sugi Duli, PT TRAKINDO UTAMA CAR Rental

Store Manager. To conduct the program, PT. Trakindo Utama via Rental and Used Department assigned one 305C Mini Excavator including the operator for 9 days (8-16/7) to conduct several activities, such as maintaining the damaged and blocked drainage at Pasir Putih village. The blocked drainage possibly induced malaria and dengue for the community around the mine. "The drainage maintenance toward Maluk beach as the last connecting point is expected to reduce malaria and dengue potentiality," Andreas said. TRAKINDO also built roads and new drainage at Pasir Putih village starting from the settlement area toward the graveyard area. The footpath, which used to be swampy and muddy, has now turned into appropriate and good road that may accommodate motorcycles and light vehicles.

Shortly after the wife left the check up room, the husband asked worriedly. Husband: "So what did the doctor say?" Wife: "He said I do not suffer from any diseases. It is only a light stress. ining. Just mentioning that word will make us think about a hot, dry, dusty, noisy area with forest and any other things that are part of mine area atmosphere and panorama. In principle, it is far from enjoyable and dreamy life. Such illustration also occurred to me. PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) a world class mining company is respected for its care to environmental, social and community area around mine. However, for me it is an unforgettable experience to be hired as one of PTNNT's employees. I thought I will develop into a rough individual, as rough as mining area and stressed as stressed as the multicultural community there. A green scenery was displayed when the first time I disembarked from Lion Air that took me to Sumbawa land. Green, just like Indonesian emerald spreading across the island. Not far from Selaparang Airport, now Lombok International Airport, a boat named Boat Tenggara I was waiting at Kayangan Jetty to take me across the open sea to Benete Jetty. It was the first time I set foot in PTNNT. Well, my friend might be right that I am not suitable to mine area since I always praise metropolis and the glamorous life of big city. Yet, time passes by and I have to move on without waiting any longer for a determination in my heart; go forward and get the new experience in life. A stony and dusty road with new thing I saw; animals that should have lay down in their pen were still at large running the road my bus took. Aah, those cows and goats crossed the road calmly amid the traffic. What a scenery! A row of camps and housing lined neatly in certain cluster type. Yet, they all new and foreign to me. The bus took thirty minutes from Benete. Wow, another surprise! The restoration I visited was very clean and cosy with various aroma and taste of food served. Its international standard capacity convinced me. My guess was right. Multicultural [community] does exist in PTNNT. [People from] Sabang to Merauke, East-West Asia, Middle East- Africa, Europe-America, Australia and other parts of the world, all gathered here. I was amazed, as amazed as peaceful song from bird perching on the powerlines, all ethnics, races and religions show their unpretentious tolerance. Yeah, Townsite they named it. A place to live for family at PTNNT mine area.

Batu Hijau Townsite! A small area surrounded by wilderness and green hills making it a natural residence that is very suitable to live in. If I get sick, SOS is ready to give medical treatment for anybody. If I am not feeling fit, Balanced Life is ready to help me to relieve and build my strained muscle. When you want to go shopping, Commissary and Katala are ready with various kinds of daily needs. When you want to transfer money and the like, you just walk to the ATM center and nearest Bank at the Townsite. Anything! It is one-spot living! Yeah.. Townsite it is. Outdoor activities can also be enjoyed by Townsite community to keep them physically and mentally healthy such as tracking, biking, jogging and pleasure to hills designed for such purposes. Tracking or hiking area and jogging area are available. We can also go to the natural beaches around the mine. Maluk beach, Rantung beach, Lawar beach, Yoyo beach, Tropical beach and of course there are still many other white sandy beaches waiting for Townsite community members to visit. Townsite is like a place to 'treat' family community. Rough and work pressure at mine area will be neutralized with these condition and situation. Passive life is beyond the assumption when I see further about daily life in Townsite. Staying idle and do nothing seem to be "forbidden" at Townsite. It is because being passive means reducing various opportunities available. Multiple activities are hosted and managed so well by Townsite community. Working hand in hand and being in the same boat have brought special color and motives to the Townsite people. In every event and festivity, those who present always show harmony in relationship. Bazaars, celebrations, contests, training, religious observances, fund risings, exhibitions and tens of events make Townsite colorful like a rainbow at a small town in a forest filled with joy. A rainbow of prayers, thoughts, efforts and good will expressed in every event for a shared intention to make Townsite a rainbow of life. A rainbow of hope for the next generations. Those events of rainbow-like bring all elements of Townsite community to gather, socialize and exchange ideas and add the colors of the rainbow with innovations and new creation for a better peaceful life at Townsite. There is no discrimination to everyone whether they come from Sabang, Merauke, East Asia, West Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe, America, Australia and other parts of the world. The rainbow at Townsite stands under one flag, "brotherhood". World Green Day was a collaboration hosted at Townsite integrating parents, children, schools and the committee. The fund and activities came from Townsite for Townsite. The residents, without any interest, tried to make Townsite a great place to live and dwell. In addition, the residents got benefits from the event by visiting available stands, such as body painting, bouncing area, planting area, performance stage, food and beverage, as a means to educate young generations in order that they keep on "greening" Townsite

Batu Hijau and surrounding areas by planting trees and keep their environment clean. An exclamation expressed in the event, "Let's make this country green! If not us, who else?" Splendid, a universal hope for this country that needs everyone's concern and commitment at all times to the sustainability of the world in general and Townsite in particular. We bear no power at all to purify our heart except keeping on devoting ourselves to the one God. The most looked forward agenda before the sacrificial day was "Hajj Pilgrimage Practice". Spontaneous little hajj pilgrims appeared at Townsite wearing Umroh uniform and saying Toyyibah recitation, "Labbaikallahumma labbaik‌" in soft voices that filled the air along with the ongoing hajj pilgrimage practice. They were the little hajj pilgrims of Buin Batu School. They demonstrated a manifestation of devotion to God the Great Creator. Behind PTNNT exploration and mining operation, the little generations have a dream of satisfying the dreams of their parents who are PTNNT employees that hopefully they can be 'the summoned ones' to do hajj pilgrimage to the holy land [of Mecca] someday. Indeed, the practice presented a touching view and made everyone proud. In addition, a quite sophisticated information and educational technology contributed another 'color' to the Townsite. Educational backwardness will never happen. The school that is adopting teaching-learning acculturation with various available curriculums, such as: IB World, National-Indonesian and Cambridge curriculums, and ISO certified, is not a nonsense when the school is highlighted as the best school and is frequently visited by various educational level in Sumbawa and its surroundings. Indeed, Townsite community has presented the best efforts through its colorful life. The community's warm hugs and humble smiles right from the depth in their heart have made the Townsite as the most human cluster type settlement on earth. The colors of Townsite are always impressive in the heart of anyone visits it.
