open S N E D GAR in aid of Phyllis

Tuckwell

We hope you will enjoy visiting the gardens, which are all privately owned, and take away inspiration and ideas to use in your own garden. From small unique cottage corners to larger gardens with space to explore, we’ve got something to interest everyone. Our own garden at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice is also opening and we will be welcoming visitors on the 14th July to enjoy our own green space, and chat to our volunteer gardeners who give up their time to keep it looking its best (further information on page 11). We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our garden owners who have worked so hard preparing their gardens ready for us and for kindly sharing them with visitors to support Phyllis Tuckwell. Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care provides supportive and end of life care to patients and their families living with an advanced or terminal illness across West Surrey and North East Hampshire. All of our care is provided free of charge to patients and their families, but as the NHS/Government only cover 20% of our costs we rely heavily on our fantastic community to help us raise over £20,000 every single day. By visiting our Open Gardens you will be supporting Phyllis Tuckwell, enabling us to continue providing our services to the local community – thank you! Everyone is welcome, so please come along and enjoy the gardens. If you would like more information or fancy joining our Open Gardens 2019, then please see details on the inside back page of this brochure.

Thank you

Tips

when visiting the open gardens

Leave only footprints

n e d r a G e In th

Walk around the garden ticking each thing below and see if you can find them all!

Mind your step!

Remember to take any rubbish with you and leave the garden as you found it on arrival.

Steps, uneven paths and plants across the walkway are aspects of most gardens, so please take care when walking around the gardens and keep to the main paths where possible.

Photography If you see something you like and want to take a quick photo, don’t forget to ask the garden owner for permission beforehand.

Time for a cuppa

Parking

Many gardens will be offering tea, coffee and if you’re lucky cake(!), so make sure you take some spare change with you, all proceeds from refreshments will go to Phyllis Tuckwell.

Parking may be limited at some gardens, especially if it’s busy, so please plan ahead and car share if you are visiting with friends and family.

Dogs If you’ve got a four-legged friend you want to bring with you, check for the dog symbol underneath each garden description in the brochure to see if the open garden is happy to allow dogs. Don’t forget dogs need to be kept on a lead at all times and no mess left behind!

4

Toilets Toilets will not be available at most gardens so please bear this in mind before you visit.

Many of us use gardening as a therapy to relax after a hard day or a long week, and at Phyllis Tuckwell we are always exploring new ways to bring our patients innovative therapies to improve their wellbeing and to help them relax.

nd Sunday 22 July 2-6pm

That’s why we’ve introduced Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) sessions to our range of Occupational Therapy services!

16 Hurtmore Chase, Hurtmore, Godalming, GU7 2RT Mrs Ann Bellamy

Led by Lisi Pilgrem, Occupational Therapist at Phyllis Tuckwell, the sessions are designed for those patients who enjoy nature or gardening, but due to their illness find it hard to continue to take part in these activities. The sessions enable normalisation, support patients with managing their symptoms and give them the chance to get away from their illness. Many patients may have lost muscle strength and mobility, resulting in reduced independence and the need for a carer for everyday tasks, so making a planter to take home for themselves or to give to a loved one is therefore hugely beneficial to them and very special for those receiving it.

A secluded medium sized (approx quarter acre) garden comprised mainly of a large lawn divided into discrete areas by shrubs, trees and flowerbeds with a high degree of colour. On the bungalow side of the lawn there is a patio area with hanging baskets, troughs and planted pots with fuchsias being a speciality. In the opposite corner there is a shaded arbour bordered by hostas.

Admission: £4 (children free)

From Godalming follow signs to Charterhouse & continue about a quarter of a mile beyond Charterhouse School. Or from A3 take Norney, Shackleford & Hurtmore turn off & proceed east for half a mile.

Research shows that gardening, or spending time surrounded by nature, can reduce stress levels and improve wellbeing - and since introducing STH at Phyllis Tuckwell we have seen how it has helped reduce our patients’ stress levels, increased their self-esteem, restored energy levels and improved their quality of life. Entwined with our STH we also have a beautiful garden at our Hospice in Farnham, which is maintained by a wonderful team of volunteer gardeners and which can be enjoyed by our patients, and their carers and families. We will be opening the garden on Saturday 14th July as part of our Open Gardens 2018, and we would love to invite you to come and visit, from 11am-3pm. You can meet our volunteer gardeners and tea, coffee and cakes will be available. For more information about the Phyllis Tuckwell garden opening please turn to page 11 of this brochure. 13
