Electric motors move the world, we move electric motors.

Electric motors move the world, we move electric motors. “I call it CRP – courtesy, reliability, precision. I believe in this, and the loyalty of our customers confirms that I am not alone. We make sure that the customer receives the order as early as possible. We have our own transport, which is a big plus for the customer, because we are able to react flexibly. From this point of view, the immediate markets are best for us. 95 % of our customers are in Germany, but we also want to get into new markets. We would like soon to establish cooperation with partners in for example USA, France, Sweden, but who knows what the future will bring.” Read more on page 12

Courtesy, reliability, precision

Vladimir Olmr, owner of the company Sopo, was in 2011 nominated for an award in the competition Businessman of the Year, organised by Ernst and Young in cooperation with the leading digital news server iDnes.cz. The following interview took place during this occasion.

How do you view the willingness to confront risks and how do you cope with uncertainty in life in general? I am prepared to take risks, but it depends on what. I take chances in that I go ahead with some things when I dont have certainty that it will bear fruit. I rely on my intuition, which usually proves reliable rather than ending in disappointment. At the beginning we took a lot of risks, for example when we decided to end cooperation with a client who accounted for 70% of our turnover. Such decisions are sometimes necessary, as it allows the person and business to move forward. What is the most difficult problem you have to confront during development of your business? The worst aspects of business are those which you are not able to influence. For example when the cost of copper rises steeply, or when the Crown exchange rate changes, bureaucracy, these are the things that bother me. For all the rest I am personally responsible.

Where possible we transfer any savings in manpower to new production and products. This is also one of the reasons for cooperation with the Czech Technical University.

Wherever I have some influence, I don‘t complain. What success do you have in securing financial backing for your investment goals? The biggest investor is the family. I also managed to persuade banks that what we are doing has a future and everything I ever promised has been realised. In addition we managed to get financial subsidies of 6 million crowns for training employees, we have approved a project to the value of 9 million for new information technology, where we got 50% of the total cost of the project, and also the project Inovace, where we likewise obtained 50% of the total cost (10M) for technical facilities for producing stator segments using our technology. Another project is Control and optimisation of processes in the business, on which we are cooperating with ČVUT (Czech Technical University in Prague) and we have high expectations for this. What are your plans for growth of your business? The two main aims for the next three years include support of a new project „segment winding“, which already has independent production space and dedicated technical facilities. We would like to realise this with a minimal increase in employees. And the second aim is improving efficiency and expansion of current products. Where possible we would transfer any savings in manpower to new production and products. This is also one of the reasons for cooperation with the Czech Technical University. How do you think that you can distinguish yourself from the competition? I call it „CRP“ - courtesy, reliability, precision. I believe in this, and the loyalty of our customers confirms that I am not alone. We make sure that the customer receives the order as early as 13

The crisis has had some effect on our profits, but it is necessary to be able to react to this. Here we work together as family, friends, and half the neighborhood, and I cant allow that this would have some impact on them. possible. We have our own transport, which is a big plus for the customer, because we are able to react flexibly. From this point of view, the immediate markets are best for us. 95% of our customers are in Germany, but we also want to get into new markets. and half the neighborhood, and I cant allow that this would have some impact on them. We still have capacity to increase production and at the same time we are able to lower running costs and improve productivity of work. As long as the economy is not struck by another significant upheaval, we are able from the present time to achieve 10 to 20% annual growth over the next five years. What factors determine the way you manage growth in your company? We have to monitor trends and react to them. Just now we are focusing mainly on mobility, alternative resources and stators with split segments. What is your business vision? I still want our company to stay as a mid-size company with 200 to 250 employees. I would like to preserve the notion that customers have the feeling that they are our only customer, to whom we dedicate our services, that we are here for them and we will react quickly and flexibly to their requirements. For exactly this reason we are putting together a high performance world information system. Regarding employees, the company has a very low turn around which I would like to maintain and am very proud of this. And provided people know this, then they will stay. Good and faithful employees are the greatest asset of any company.

What are the unique characteristics of your products? We are unique in that we produce rotors and stators as components of electric motors and not complete electric motors. We produce them very efficiently, using the best technology. We have now introduced new equipment which is solely ours, and this is a big step forward, as we are thus no longer dependent on foreign technology. We manage to produce segmented stators without high initial investment, with a maximum proportion of performance slots and with an unlimited number of parallel wires.

What do you see as the roots of your current and future success? They are the people, a functioning happy family, praise and recognition from friends, people who have achieved something, or for example the director of the the apprentice school, who say to you „Hey, you’ve done well“. And also that I am sitting here and taking part in this competition.

How has the ecomic crisis manifested itself in your business? Off course the crisis has had some effect on our profits, but it is necessary to be able to react to this. Here we work together as family, friends,

What does the term businessman mean to you? Responsibility. To people, family, employees, to customers.. when it goes well, it is a real pleasure.

14

How do you recharge your batteries? I try to keep every weekend free and prefer active holidays. Mainly in the hills, hiking and recently I have taken to cycling.
