HE 1949 PERUVIAN is honored and pleosed to dedicate this book to Dr. Costle M. Brown. Dr. Brown come to Peru in the fall of 1928. os Registrar and Associate Professor of Political Science. He wos mode Heod of the Deportment of HIStory and Social Sciences. in 1931. and chairman of the Social Science Division in 1946. Durmg August. 1939. he porticipoted in an international law conference at McGill University, Montreal. at the invitation of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He is the sponsor for the local International Relations Club and until this year sponsored the senior class. At present he is a member of the administrative policies committee, chairman ol the faculty meetings committee, and a member of the Nebraska state committee on education lor social work. He is post president olthe Peru unit of N E. A. Dr. Brown holds a bachelor's degree in politiool science from Denison University, Demson. Ohio, a master's degree in politico! science from Columbia Umversity, and Doctor of Jurisprudence from tho Univers1ty of Chicago. As an undergraduate, he spec~alized in languages and political science and while at high school he c:onsidcrcd a career as a concert violinist. The ballot, so famihar to Dr. Brown, was used by tha staff in choosing this dedication From letters and interviews oome these dediootory lines-is modest and self effacing. yet firm and courageous in defending the course which he thinks best for the students and the college- hos won the respect of his faculty colleagues and 1s a force to be reckoned with in clashes of opinions-is generous and helpful to students conbnuing their study in graduate school- tempers his counsel with the soundness of judgment that comes from rich experionce-inluses warmth and hfe into mcidcnls and courses wh1ch would otherwise be dry and hfcless w1thout h1s subtle humor- IS resourceful in constructing oases to illustrate pomls leadmg to clearer understandmg-is an outdoor sportsman W1th a poss1on for f~:~hing wllh rod and fly-has a fondness for dogs which causes stroys to follow h1m-<>njoys buckwheat and good e>gars-a dediootion to Dr. Brown for his semce to Peru and to the commonwealth of Nebraska.
