H E Peru Demonstration Hig h School p la ns to ca rry on a balanced program of activities. No o ne a c t i,·ity is al l(l\\·ecl to dominate to the exclusion of all othe rs a nd no grou p of s tude nts hav ing a particu la r in terest is ai iO\\·ed to m onopo lize the int e rest of the school. The High School has been ab le to m ai nt a in a hi gh standard of performance in va rio us acti,·ities as is e , ·idenced by th e yea r's record. In football its team met tea ms fro m equa l and larger ::;choo ls wi th credit. Five games were wo n, one \\·as tied, a nd t hree \\' e re lost. The baske t ball season \\·as a lso s uccessfu l. :'\line scheduled games were played, of w hich there \\·ere six victories for Peru. l n the M-I-. 1-K T ourna men t held in Peru o ur team \Yas bea ten in its fi rst game. v\ e had the dis tinction, hO\\·ever, o f being defeat ed b y the T ournament cha mpions a nd we held t hem to a closer sco re than did t he runners-up. Our boys did t heir most o utsta nding \\·o rk in basket ball at the State Tournament. Ha\·i ng been th e c up \\'in ners in Class "D" las t yea r, we were p ut in C lass "C" th is season. Our boys won their first three games by decisive ma rg ins : A lliance 19-8, Wakefield 18-9 , a nd Lexington 22-1 n. Th ey lost the last game to Tilden 8-13. I n the M -l- · -K Music a nd Dramatic cont es t, Peru won first place in its class in the contest of Girls ' G lee C lubs a nd in th e co ntest of One-Act Plays. Win ifred Pettit won firs t in v io lin solo a nd Mac Dunning took second in cornet solo. Our debate team won fifty per cent of its con tes ts, \\'lnmng from \\'ymore, Sterling and H olmesvill e, a nd losing to Beatrice , A uburn a nd Hum boldt. The tea m was made u p of t \\'O soph omores a nd one junior, two of \\·hom had not deba ted before. These facts make their success more nota ble and pred ict better success next year. In t he school year there rema in t\\'0 important e \·ents, th e Scholastic Contest a nd the Track Season . These can n ot he repo rted on, due to the fact that the Peru vian goes to press ahead of t h e cia tes of t hese scheclulecl e\·ents.

EARLY ELEMENTARY COUNCIL

HE p ur pos.e of t ~ e Earl y Eleme ntary Coun c!l is to pm ~1 ote a fee ling of social um ty among t he women ta long the Pnm ary a nd Kinderga rten cou rses. One of the a ims since its estab li s hm ent on th e campus has been to affiliate with the International Kind ergarten l nion and the Primary Council. This was acco mplished a t the beginn ing of the year . O ur representatives now have voting power in t he I. K. U. Convention. The Council in this way has not only secured u ni ty a nd professional feeling in itself as a unit, b ut a lso with the nat ion as a whole. O ur relationshi p gives us the ad va n tages o f comi ng m direct contact wit h new methods a nd p rocedures as wor ked o u t b y education leaders in ou r fi eld.

At Christmas t he Coun cil pe rformed th eir a nn ual c ustom o f carol singing about t he town with li gh ted ca nd les. In February the Early Elemen tary Council made a trip to O m a ha to see T ony Sarg's Marionette Dolls . The fi na nces of the Coun cil a re to be used as a Student Loan Fund for teachers in t he department who have ability a nd need help to conti nue their education . There has been a n increase in number of those t akin g Earl y Eleme nta ry work over last year. The fi gures a re 62 for last yea r as aga inst 85 for th is yea r. The Counci l feel greatly indebted to Miss M cCollum a nd Miss Zack for the success it has had t his yea r. The me mbers of this organization have e nj oyed the gain in fe llowship , tea m\\路ork , a nd spirit of helpfulness which has predomi nated t hruout the yea r.

Goldsmith of South western College, vVinfield , Kansas, spoke on " The Presen t Status of t he Heredity ve rsus Environment Controversy ." The in sta lla tio n ceremon ies ,,路ere carried out a t a dain ty four-course dinne r held in the domes t ic science dining rooms, wit h fifty me mbers a nd g uests present. The tab les were strew n \\路ith American Beauty roses a nd t he color scheme o f red a nd g reen was fur t her carried out wit h wh ite candles tied wi t h ribbons , a nd wit h hand -painted menu a nd progra m cards in the shape of th e fra ternity key. A week later t he fraternity brought to t he campus Dr. Ray m ond J. Pool of t he U ni ve rsity of 路eb raska, who gave an illustrated lecture on "M t. R an ie r National Pa rk." Page I 20
