Hi Folks, In 1957, Walter O’Malley was probably the most hated man in Brooklyn for moving the Brooklyn Dodgers to LA. He originally wanted “them bums” as the Dodgers were fondly known, out of Ebbets Field and into the Atlantic Yards area. He was blocked by Robert Moses, who wanted a stadium built in Queens for the Brooklyn Dodgers. As a result, O’Malley and the Dodgers left some of the most passionate fans in the dust. Now, here we are 55 years later and we finally have an arena for our very own Brooklyn team. The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID, only two blocks from the Barclays Center, is anticipating a new era of excitement and increased business activity in the North end of the BID. Go Brooklyn Nets! The Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID’s primary mission is to clean, beautify and market our commercial Avenue. This is achieved mostly through the promotion of events that strengthen our branding as a charming, yet exciting, area of mom and pop neighborhood stores, bars and restaurants. The BID has hosted and co-sponsored the Civic Council’s Halloween Parade, one of the largest kids’ events in New York City. The Brooklyn Pride Parade marches
down Fifth Avenue and we join in with Make Music NYC, bringing live music to every other block of the BID on the first day of summer. Last year, we brought over 35 events to Fifth Avenue to celebrate, sing and dance. Even though we are in the shadow of an 18,000 seat arena, the BID will work to maintain our small town welcoming atmosphere. I love Park Slope, that’s why I have been here for so long! about p park slope p Park Slope is a popular residential neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. While its boundaries have expanded over the years, many fix its border at Prospect Park West and Fourth Avenue along the east-west line and from Flatbush Avenue to the Prospect Expressway, along its north to south. Park Slope’s historic character accounts for a strong measure of its lasting appeal. Replete with row houses and brownstones, the neighborhood is distinguished for having the largest landmark district in Brooklyn and enjoys quiet, tree-lined streets with wide architectural variety. With its obvious local charm and intimate feel, this close knit neighborhood has become an enclave for families and is rich in resources for children of all ages. The neighborhood is equally well known for its diversity of families and residents. and boasts the second highest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) population in the City. Long known as an activist community, Park Slope has achieved national recognition as a place with a rich public life. The neighborhood, for instance, is the “Recycling Capital” of New York City with voluntary recycling programs an ongoing part of neighborhood life since the 1970’s. 3
It is also home to a thriving locallyowned business community. In fact, many of the business owners live in the neighborhood and enrich it with their community involvement. Park Slope’s commercial corridors are second to none and feature a number of excellent restaurants, bars, coffee houses, sidewalk cafes and shops that draw people from around the City. The neighborhood is also known for its many cultural institutions, with close access to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and the Central Library.

historic park slope p p The Old Stone House is known as a cultural hub to the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID, as well as a physical center (it lies approximately in the middle of the BID, which runs from Dean to 18th Street). Many are aware of the park’s significant role in the Battle of Brooklyn, but few are aware of its deep, rich baseball history. Believe it or not, The Old Stone House served as the original clubhouse of the team that was to become the Brooklyn Dodgers, when they played at the Washington Baseball Park (now J. J. Byrne Park and William Alexander Middle School). The first home game of the “Brooklyn Baseball Club” and the Grand Opening of Washington Park was Saturday, May
12, 1883 (they beat Trenton 13‑6). During 1883 they played in the minor leagues (“Inter‑State Association”) and won the Inter‑State championship. In 1884, they joined the major leagues as an expansion team in the old “American Association.” The original owner (and, for a couple of years, the manager) of the Brooklyn team was Charles H. Byrne. During their first season, he hired Charles H. Ebbets to work as a ticket taker at Washington Park. Ebbets gradually worked his way up in the organization, and took control of the team on Jan. 1, 1898, just a few hours before New York City annexed Brooklyn, and just 3 days before Byrne died. The rest, as they say, is history.

Lenore DiLeo-Berner was born in Queens, NY and raised in Smithtown, NY. She graduated Cornell University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science. In 2006, Ms. Berner accepted the position of Principal at William Alexander Middle School 51. She has brought to MS 51 her love of science, the arts, and collaboration to enhance this great school’s curriculum and vibrant community. Since her tenure, the school has earned an “A” in progress reports for four consecutive years, a “Well-Developed” on Quality Review and improved state and Regents exam scores. She is proud of the programs she has instituted, which inspire so many of her students.
Alice & Michael Halkias are the owners of Grand Prospect Hall, best known for promising to “make your dreams come true” in their famous TV ads. Mr. Halkias was born in the US, grew up in Syria and Greece during WWII and returned to the States in 1966. After working in bakeries, he became a successful real estate developer in Pittsburgh, where he met and married his now business partner Alice. They purchased what became Grand Prospect Hall (sans “Grand”) in 1981, when it was but an abandoned, leaky version of its future glory. Today, the ornate ballroom and banquet area host everything from weddings of all cultures to business functions and proms.
Captain Michael Ameri comes to Park Slope via Queens, where he served as the Commanding Officer of Patrol (Queens North Anti-Crime Unit) and Commanding Officer of Queens Vice Enforcement. He recently joined the 78th Precinct as Commanding Officer, covering Park Slope (including Prospect Park and the eastern side of the Gowanus Canal.) He has a strong sense of the community, with a commitment to safety and improving the quality of life for its residents. When he is not working, Captain Ameri enjoys spending time with his 10-year-old son and rooting for his favorite team, the New York Jets.
Since 1991, Marya Warshaw has been the Executive/Artistic Director of BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange (formerly The Gowanus Arts Exchange). Marya danced as a child at the Center for Modern Dance Education, in NJ, studied at The Cunningham School, with June Finch and developed her first performing space Chichicastenango with dear friend Susan Bodine. She attended Bard College on a full Performing Arts Scholarship in theater & dance and has done graduate work in Arts Management at NYU, Gallatin Division. Marya lives with her wife Jane-Cole Raftery, dog and cat in Park Slope where she is a long time resident and raised her two sons.

Benchmark is located in an off-the-beatenpath space behind Loki Bar, on Second Street near Fifth Avenue. The amazing history of the site includes once serving as an Ice House and way station for goods that came through the Gowanus Canal via underground tunnels! History aside, neighbors come to Benchmark for its warm atmosphere and “New American” cuisine, made from pasture-raised animals and locally-grown produce. The hearty menu focuses on steaks, duck breast, seafood and burgers. Don’t forget to check out their sizable brunch menu on weekends!
The average New Yorker does not have a backyard to relax in for the warmer months. But, recently, Fifth Avenue was lucky to get its own Backyard, complete with delicious food and drinks. The outdoor space is obviously the star attraction, but it’s also a great place for brunch and small plate meals any time of year. Their simple, delicious menu includes slider sandwiches like Pulled Pork and Fig & Blue Cheese with a selection of beer, wine and bubbly. They also have an original cocktail menu with fresh, seasonal ingredients and local spirits. No backyard? Then Backyard is the next best thing.
The Chip Shop is a little bit of England, in the heart of Brooklyn. Anglophiles will feel right at home with their staple dish of deep fried cod and chips (fries for us North Americans.) But their Macaroni & Cheese and pies (Steak & Onion, Wild Mushroom, Beef Shepherds) are just as satisfying and delicious. Make sure to leave a lot of room for dessert. The Chip Shop is world famous for its deep fried Mars Bars, Twinkies, Snickers and even a double-battered Atkins Diet Bar! Wash your meal down with an English Ale or hard cider and you’ve got a little slice of heaven (or at least London), right here in Park Slope.
Aperitivo will remind you of a beautiful Paris bistro, but with simple, delicious Italian and American dishes. Regulars enjoy the relaxed environment, outdoor sidewalk seating, cocktails and brunch. But this little corner restaurant is also host to an amazing series of monthly (often sold out) dinners, focused on meal and drink pairings (Bourbon and BBQ, Crab and local beers, Scottish cuisine and whisky)! And If you like Aperitivo, don’t forget to check out their 7th Avenue outpost (Sotto Voce). They also cater events and own the Alta Voce catering space (318 Fifth Avenue).

Texas-born owner Sean Patterson has created a little slice of home, deep in the heart of Brooklyn. Since 2003, they’ve been serving up Tex-Mex favorites in both Cobble Hill (218 Court Street) and Fifth Avenue. Grab a cold beer, margarita or house-infused tequila (Jalapeño and Serrano/Ancho Chile/ Cinnamon and more.) Start with a round of Chipoltle BBQ wings, or try some authentic chalupas/tacos, enchiladas and fajitas. The menu also includes Chicken Fried Steak, BBQ Baby Back Ribs and catfish. Don’t forget brunch (weekdays too)! Nothing starts the day off right like a breakfast taco.
Caramello, which opened in mid-2012, is a welcome addition to Fifth Avenue. Owner Nicole Grippo is a fourth-generation gelato maker, from Little Italy by way of Vancouver. The café serves an outstanding range of coffees and other hot and cold drinks, homemade pies, pastries and savories. But the standout is the luscious, homemade, gelato and sorbetti, crafted with local ingredients and respectful of Italian tradition, with a distinctly Brooklyn sense of whimsy. Dozens of flavors range from seasonal berry and salted caramel to Rocher (like the bon bons) and Marscapone. Delizioso!
“DR. TUCKER’S 59, CURES COUGHS, COLDS: FOR ALL PAIN.” This mural at Sidecar was a pleasant discovery that appeared when its owners, John and Bart DeCoursy, rebuilt the space into a fabulous dining scene. Regulars come for the cocktails and fried chicken. But crowds also love the Cubano (marinated roast pork, ham, swiss, pickles on toasted ciabatta-chayote slaw, plantain chips) and Brandade, which were featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Sidecar is a rare spot that is open for lunch, brunch and dinner. Drop by and see what the buzz is about!
Has Beans is a neighborhood staple, although they originally began in San Francisco, California in 1976. Now located on the Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets, the fresh roasted coffee has been perking up locals since 2004. They serve a range of locally baked goods, pizzas, quiche and many Vegan-friendly options. In addition to coffee, there is a selection of teas, blended drinks (with and without caffeine) and other refreshments, including wine and beer. Need Wi-Fi and a place to print your document? Has Beans has it all.

Chef Dale Talde, of Bravo’s “Top Chef” fame, has followed-up the success of his first Park Slope outpost (Talde) with the Brooklyn version of the movie “Roadhouse.” If you are looking for a place with cold beer, a pool table and, well, pork, this is your new home! The menu also includes fried chicken, burgers tater tots, and more. Since opening in mid-August, Pork Slope has generated plenty of buzz in the neighborhood, as well as in the fickle NYC food blog world. In fact, the restaurant debuted at number 5 in the Grub Street restaurant power rankings in its very first week!
Beauty Bar might be a familiar name to those who have visited their famous outpost in Manhattan (231 East 14th Street). Their new Fifth Avenue bar opened in March of 2012 in half of the former Ozzie’s Coffee space and, to say the least, their arrival has brought quite a bit of glitz to this formerly quiet block. Beauty Bar is known for its kitschy mix of retro beauty shopchic and dive bar atmosphere. But, as the name suggests, Martinis and Manicures are available Wednesday through Saturday, 6-11 pm. That’s right, sip a cocktail and have your nails done!
Ginger’s Bar is a hub for Park Slope’s sizable lesbian community. It plays a key role in the neighborhood’s annual “Brooklyn Pride” event and is a great place for a beer, a game of pool or a night of dancing. Despite the category “lesbian bar”, though, Ginger’s is welcoming to everyone. Park Slope loves Ginger’s for its role in social activism and unpretentious vibe, but we think that the real star might actually be the Juke Box! Regulars also swear by its great karaoke scene. It’s a spot for everything one associates with a comfortable neighborhood bar.
What seems like a quiet, unassuming corner of Union Street and Fifth Avenue is actually a hotbed of music, entertainment and indoor bocce. Union Hall has been home to some of the best musical acts in the area for years, and its comedy, karaoke and burlesque shows draw rave reviews. Not up for a show? Don’t worry, Union Hall’s ground floor bar serves up beer and bocce (there are two full courts right in the bar!) and the menu includes a wide range of interesting choices, from the Thigh Master (chicken thigh sandwich) to a Stinky BKLYN Cheese Plate.

Since 1901, when Wolf Fleisher came to America to start his own butcher business, Fleisher’s has been known for its quality meats and good customer service. Its original Kingston, NY location is a popular shop with a strong, dedicated following. Now locals are thankful Fleisher’s expanded to Fifth Avenue. What sets them apart? In 1895, Cassel Goorin began selling highquality, American-made hats in Pittsburgh, PA. His sons (the Goorin Brothers) moved the business to San Francisco and today, Cassel’s great grandson heads the company, which recently opened an outpost on Park Slope’s Fifth Avenue. Goorin Brothers discovered what Park Slope residents already knew: we love hats. Drop by and try on one of their latest, stylish, seasonal creations. Make sure to wear your lid before heading out to dinner or a stroll along Fifth or through Washington Park.
Fifth Avenue is host to a large number of cafes populated by locals, using their laptops, tablets and smart phones while sipping caffeinated beverages. The dominant computer brand found in these cafes is Apple, which is probably why Fifth Avenue recently became home to one of Dr. Brendan’s Mac repair shops, part of a growing local empire here in NYC.
