The International

CAR-Symposium in Germany

The international CAR-Symposium has a history of 16 years tradition in Germany and a broad reputation within the European Car industry events. Every year, the congress welcomes over 120 company partner, attracting nearly 1200 participants and 60 journalists with recent developments, chances and challenges of the automotive future mobility. The list of high leveled Keynote-Speakers is as long as the tradition of the German CAR-Symposium itself. The close relation to the University of Duisburg-Essen -with its more than 80 engineering chairs as one of the biggest engineering faculties in Germany - brings together the extensive knowledge of science and industry.

In 2015, the International CAR Symposium found the way to China for the first time. With growing success, the event continues to bring together the Germanand the Chinese Automotive industry every year. The specialist conference is always organized close to the well-known Chinese Motor Show in Beijing or Shanghai. It therefore keeps you up-to-date at an appropriate time and place.

Beijing Auto:

China stays on track and enforces New Energy Vehicles Ferdinand Dudenhöffer1

The Chinese market presents itself much more stable than many people expected. Its currently slower growth makes China better predictable. As far as the forecasts from April 2016 are concerned, Chinas gross domestic product will grow by 6.5 % this year (see Fig. 1). Compared to the recent years, it’s a reduction, but economists have already expected it and have been prepared. So the forecast is not really surprising. Only India – a similar populous nation – is currently growing faster than China. Besides, the total world will have to cope with much less economic growth (3.5 %), as well as the Euro-Area (1.5 %). Even worse is the situation in nearly stagnating or even shrinking economies like Japan, Russia and Brazil.

At the same time, with a car density of 73 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, the Chinese car market is far from being saturated. Sustained economic growth in combination with an unsatured car market will result in an ongoing growth pattern of car sales in 2016 and 2017 – even if its amount will be smaller but better predictable. China’s share of the world’s car market will raise to around 26 % in 2016 and 27 % in 2017. Thereby, China is already the biggest car market worldwide with a successive growing distance to the other big car markets. Growth seems to be stable and predictable. Therefore, car manufacturers and suppliers will extend theirs production capacities in the coming years.

Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Dudenhöffer is director of the CAR-institute at the University of Duisburg-Essen as well as leader of the Chair for Business Administration and Automotive Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The Chinese will therefore show a lot of self-confidence at the Auto China which is – to our mind – the most important automobile fair worldwide. This new assertiveness is also getting strengthens by the increasing importance of Chinese car manufacturer. During the first months of the year, its market share has increased to 46 percent. Particularly large increases were achieved by the SUV and MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicles), i.e. vans. Vans are gaining in popularity because motorization in rural areas and outskirts is growing faster than within mega cites. And vans enjoy most attractiveness in outskirts. That is where people live together in extended family groups- with parents and grandparents- so the level of interest for up to seven seat options is approximately higher. The MPV market segment remains securely in the hands of Chinese brands. Of importance within the new markets and the outskirts are not only the seven seat options but also the price. Both together- multipurpose vehicle to low prices- will continuously push the motorization also through the general taxation of the central government. The significant reduction in the tax for vehicles with engines less than a capacity of 1.6 liters has given Chinese automotive manufacturer a boost which further gains market share in the future.

Fig. 2 shows that under a predictable environment in China, nearly 21 million passenger cars (exactly: 20,970,000) will be sold in 2016. This is an increase of 922,000 units compared to the previous year. During the first three month of the year, 5.45 million cars were sold in China. This is a raise of 9.4 % compared to the previous year. We forecast the automotive market to continue to grow in the coming months, nevertheless the speed slows down. In addition, China remains the pioneer within world-car-business. In no country in the world, car sales will rise as much as in China in 2016. The forecast shown in fig. 2 is on the conservative side. Also for the following years we can expect ongoing growth. Up to now, there is no indication for a significant slowdown of economic growth, despite of an overheating Chinese real estate sector. Until now, the politically “prescribed” growth of the Chinese economy has been working without any crisis, unlike before many predicted. Considering the current monetary policy of the ECB in the Euro-Area, one gets the impression that a real estate bubble, a stock market slump, or a further banking crisis are more likely to occur in Europe.

Figure 3 shows how precautious – or conservative – our prediction for the next 5 years is. Whereas Chinese car sales soared during the first turbo-growth phases by 39 % p.a. and 34 % p.a. respectively, annual growth in the “new normal” has moderated to 12 % p.a. Our chart predicts a conservative but stable annual growth rate of 4% for the coming years till 2020. In 2020, 28 % of all new automobiles sold worldwide will find a new owner in China. In spite of a significant slowdown, China still pulls away from the rest of the world. Among other things, this development makes clear that the significance of the Chinese auto fair – Auto China – is to rise further unstoppably.

China pushes EVs In the year 2015 worldwide sales of EV (electric vehicles: Battery electric and plug-in hybrid) reached 650,000 units. Roughly, 51 % of all the EV (including Plug-in-Hybrid Vehicles) sold last year where purchased by Chinese customers. The main reason for this is the subsidies policy conducted by the government. Currently, China is in the process of improving the local air quality in its mega cities drastically. Thus, EVs are unalterable. And as one positive side effect of these measures, China tries to instrumentalize EVs for its industrial policy.

The market for electric cars in China itself is very fragmented. As far as BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) are concerned, our research led to the following range of car manufactures, sorted by theirs sales volumes in 2015: Top 5 BEV sales in China 1. Zotye (around 25,000 BEV-sales) 2. Kandi (around 20,000 BEV-sales) 3. BAIC (around 18,000 BEV-sales) 4. BYD (around 11,000 BEV-sales) 5. JAC (around 9,000 BEV-sales)

A large proportion of them are sub-small cars with electric transmission. From the DaimlerBYD-brand Denza, as far as our research is concerned, around 2,900 units have been sold in 2015. The competition in the very important field E-Mobility in China is not yet decided and remains thrilling. Conclusion: Beijing Auto sets trends The Automobile Fair in China will set trends again. In 2015, the Chinese manufacturers underlined their important role by showing inexpensive SUVs and Vans. In 2016, this trend is expected to be continued

and at the same time, supported by a stable market development in China, the expansion of premium cars will be kept up. Thereby, the Electric car could play a key role in China.

excellently and synergistically complements the company’s existing product portfolio. ZF TRW is a leading developer and producer of active and passive safety systems and serves all major vehicle manufacturers with an established footprint that includes facilities worldwide. In early 2016, ZF TRW opened a new crash sled section of its Anting Technical Centre – underlining its commitment to investment in China. The inclusion of the latest model Servo Sled, the fourth crash laboratory within the company’s global footprint, will be located at its state-of-the-art research and development facility in Anting. The 66,000 square meter facility, ZF TRW’s largest technical center worldwide, employs more than 1,200 engineering, research, and technical staff and was officially opened in June 2014. It was designed and built to house more than 20 scientific testing labs supporting all of ZF TRW’s primary businesses including driver assist systems, braking, steering, occupant safety and electronics. The center supports vehicle manufacturers in bringing advanced safety systems to the Chinese market and the broader Asia Pacific region. Norbert Kagerer, global vice president, Occupant Safety Systems Engineering, commented:

“Our OSS testing and validation program is a crucial part of research and development and the overall business strategy. We are immensely proud to be opening our fourth crash laboratory worldwide, here in this state-of-the-art research and development facility. Having the sled locally in Anting will provide strong support for our future growth in China; we can work even more closely with domestic and international OEMs – testing specifically for the Chinese market.” “Our goal to localize engineering, testing and component manufacture in China along with the fitment of our advanced technology in this market progresses a step closer today. Establishing crash sled capability extends our comprehensive offering of safety systems engineering, and represents a major milestone in our global OSS footprint.” This latest equipment provides advanced frontal crash testing with a static pitch and yaw reproducing realistic 3D crash simulations, exceeding US NCAP requirements for Oblique Moving Deformable Barrier (OMDB) at 90kph. Side impact testing can reproduce load cases compliant with Moving Deformable Barrier requirements for IIHS, US NCAP, Euro NCAP, C NCAP and UN R95.

The Occupant Safety Systems Business Unit of the Active & Passive Safety Technology Division is located in Alfdorf, Germany. This is where airbag prototypes are produced and tested, for instance.
