50 and Fierce Local podcaster and career coach tackles ageism and sexism in the workplace

A

ccording to recent census estimates, nearly 11,000 people in the United States turn 50 ever y day, and many need support at this critical juncture in their lives – particularly women. “Ever yone faces ageism,” says Kamrin Huban, Barring ton-based podcaster and career coach, “ but women face a double whammy of ageism and sexism.” Kamrin Huban’s podcast, 50, Not Dead, recorded its first episode in April 2020 and launched its third season in January of this year. “The podcast is designed to give women a platform to say what it’s like to be 50 in our society, and there is no shortage of women interested in talking about this,” Huban says. “We talk about what they’re facing in their careers and what they need. From a physiological standpoint, as women go through menopause they just don’t [care what people think] as much as they did when they were younger, and many women find great freedom in that.” In 2017, after 20 years spent forging her own career path through the corporate world, Huban encountered a toxic manager who left her exhausted and humiliated, questioning her own worth and competence. “I watched her burn through women and I knew it would eventually be my turn,” Huban says, “ but I didn’t understand what it would feel like to be targeted like that.” MARCH 2024 | HeyRhody.com

This dynamic became a draining , relentless 18-month cycle of degradation that Huban met with continually greater attempts to prove her worth to someone who would never value her. Eventually, concerned friends and her husband no longer recognized her, and convinced her to break a pattern she couldn’t fix alone. “I cried the night before I resigned because I loved the work. I didn’t want to resign,” she explains. Huban spent months processing her experience with therapists and focusing on quality time with her daughter before she was ready to start the next chapter in her professional life. “ Throughout my career, I had the opportunity to work with some incredible leadership coaches and I always thought that someday, I’d become a coach myself,” she says. What happened next was a confluence of

10

timing Huban couldn’t deny. “Brown University began offering a career coaching certification; I applied and was accepted,” she says. She loved the experience immediately. “I wanted to help other women who had been destroyed by their jobs and could no longer see who they were. I wanted to show them that they are not worthless, but rather that the job wasn’t the right fit.” Huban received her certificate in March 2020 and because of the pandemic, found herself with unexpected down time that she used to network with people virtually. Before long she noticed a pattern. “I was hearing senior-level women with big jobs at big companies who, after the pandemic, said, ‘I may never work again. I may have to take a step down and take a massive pay cut.’ But the pandemic didn’t just happen to women over 50,”

says Huban. “I was working with vibrant, intelligent women with a lot to offer the world and I was afraid they’d get lost – that a lack of self-confidence would keep them from aiming high enough.” Huban once heard it said that the most invisible person on Earth is a mother in her 50s, which is a concept she rejects. “ When I turned 50, I was having more impact than I ever imagined,” she explains. “I feel more alive, more hopeful and more excited than I have in a really long time, and I want to help other women in their 50s stop questioning their talent, recognize their value, and make the big changes they’re dreaming of.” Learn about Kamrin Huban’s career coaching services at KamrinHuban.com and listen to her podcast at 50NotDead.com. Lessons from Rhode Island’s Free Ferry Experiment In partnership with The Public’s Radio • ThePublicsRadio.org • By Olivia Ebertz

A

s the sun sets over one of the final free ferries from Providence to Bristol, a group of three retirees, plus their younger friend are seated together, talking and laughing. They’re headed home after a Friday afternoon of drinking beer at Narragansett Brewer y on the East Side. Ben Warren said he’s taken the free ferr y a total of five times, round-trip. “Other trips, I’d walk down South Main Street and go to one of the restaurants. And I’d have lunch and then come back. And then we’d walk up through the East Side on Benefit Street,” he said. “ We’re all boaters. We’re all yachting types. So we love the water. And I wish this would continue year round.” He and his friends usually cycle together on the bike path between Bristol and Providence when the weather permits. If it weren’t for the ferr y, his friend Jim Flynn said they probably wouldn’t have traveled to Providence to hang out this December or Januar y. “Since we couldn’t ride we fig ured we’d come on the boat, go to the beer, and hang out together and ride it back. We’ve had a lot of fun with the ferr y that’s been running. If there was a consistent ser vice, I wouldn’t even mind paying ,” said Flynn. The men said their price tag would be $10 or $12 for a round trip ticket. But that amount of money wouldn’t be nearly enough to cover the cost of running the ferry. The state’s public transportation agency says each day the ferry ran, it spent about $100,000 on the ser vice and only averaged 274 passengers. By comparison, all RIPTA bus routes combined cost the state on average $366,605 per day, and daily ridership is 30,931 passenger trips. Although the ferr y ridership numbers sound low, John Flaherty, deputy director of the Providence-based transportation and planning think tank Grow Smart RI said that doesn’t mean the state should abandon the idea of expanding ferr y ser vice in the future. “I think that a ferr y ser vice could be much more practical going for ward in the state. But it really relies upon having a comprehensive public transit network in place in order for that to succeed,” he said.

MARCH 2024 | HeyRhody.com

The state’s public transportation agency says each day the ferry ran, it spent about $100,000 on the service and only averaged 274 passengers

Flaherty says the success of the Bristol-Providence ferr y was bound to be limited. Statewide data show most people commute to Providence from places on the west side of Narragansett Bay, like War wick and Cranston. But the temporar y route only really benefited people commuting between Bristol and Providence. If the state did want to make a viable go at public ferr y ser vice, Flaherty said it would also need a more robust public bus system to transport people from ferr y docks to their final destinations. “ The ferr y gets you from one dock to another dock,” he said. “And if you don’t have that last leg , then people feel like, ‘Okay, well, they had a shuttle that dropped me in Kennedy Plaza, but then what ?’” In a press conference [Monday], the Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti said the state has no plans to restart the weekday Bristol-to-Providence ferry ser vice, even if it now thinks the bridge could be closed much longer than initially expected. Public transit advocates say the best option for lessening traffic during the remainder of

the westbound closure of the Washington Bridge is to get more people on RIPTA buses. “One bus can replace up to 40 cars, right ? So if we’re actually looking for the fastest way to move people across what’s left of the bridge, buses are by far our best bet,” said state Senator Meghan Kallman, of Pawtucket. Kallman says the state could help convince more people to take the bus if Rhode Island provided free RIPTA ser vice over the Washington Bridge until regular traffic is restored. In addition to temporar y RIPTA ser vice to ease congestion during the west-bound bridge closure, advocates like Kallman and Flaherty say besides preser ving current ser vice, the state should be focusing on, and funding , a long term plan it published that calls for the significant expansion of public transportation ser vices by 2040 – a plan that creates more rapid transit bus lanes and/or light rails, but also increases ferr y ser vice. Voices of the Bay: If the Shoe Fits Portsmouth’s foot sizing expert shares tips for finding the best fit By Nina Murphy

P

PROPER FIT: Medical studies show that 90 percent of people with foot pain and damage are wearing shoes too short and too wide. When I fit shoes, your foot is perfectly flat, not flat footed, just flat on the ground and the toes can function. I teach people to know the natural leng th and width of their feet. When shoes fit, legs are perfectly straight, knees are in a proper position. It’s like doing a handstand – all the fingers have to be extended to do that handstand. People’s feet are like that. If not, it blows out the knees and hips.

ortsmouth resident Richard Johnson has spent his career sizing his customers’ feet. If he had his way, ever yone would have their feet properly fitted for leng th and width, which he believes would reduce the number of plantar fasciitis surgeries and replacement procedures for hips and knees. Growing up in Brockton, MA, which was once known as Shoe City when it had close to 100 shoe manufacturing companies in operation, Johnson started working as an office boy for the King Size Co. shoe factor y as a teenager. He eventually made his way onto the showroom floor sizing customers with his trusted Brannock Device, a foot-measurement tool developed in 1923, which he has been using for 60 years. In 1964, Johnson opened A Proper Fit in Assonet, MA and relocated to Fall River in 2005. A devastating water leak in the building two years ago forced him to close his storefront, but he continues to fit long time customers by appointment in Portsmouth.

Johnson’s trusty Brannock Device

WIDTH M ATTER S: You have to know your width. Someone says, “I thought I was 8-wide,” and I fit them and they are actually 9.5-narrow. Look at models today – they are all bowlegged, which means the knees are not coming together and from there down to the ankles the legs are twisting out, which causes issues with knees and hips, varicose veins, and heel pain. This is a disaster and doctors aren’t doing anything to prevent it. LITTLE FEET: In 1970, the American Medical Association said it was okay for children to wear sneakers to school. Before, children could only wear sneakers for g ym class. Today you see little children wearing sneakers with Velcro straps. None of those sneakers fit properly. Why haven’t there been children’s shoe stores in the last 12-15 years? Why aren’t the

pediatricians concerned about this? Pediatricians used to watch children walk and if children “toed in,” the doctor would insert “cookies,” which are arch supports so as you were growing , you would start walking correctly. THE WALK : I have a customer tr y out different shoes and watch them walk. If I am satisfied, I show them their footprint and I start customizing the inside of the sneaker or shoe by using felt pads to create arch support which can be adjusted as their foot starts changing shape and the toes are stretching out. Why would a running shoe store not offer narrow running shoes ? There is no support in Crocs and Hokas, and foot doctors are allowing it to happen. I just want people to realize there is a natural solution for foot problems and pain.

Looking from the outside in, national media outlets including Travel + Leisure, People, and The New York Times have all recently touted the charms of the smallest state, not to mention that Newport consistently tops lists of best places in the country to get married. Sometimes the best way to appreciate what you’ve got is to revisit it with a fresh set of eyes and immerse yourself like a traveler. Here, you’ll find a year of ideas, pairing places with things to do and where to stay. In most cases, you only need to park the car once, so you can explore by foot or public transportation, which only adds to the feel of being off on an adventure. We’ve aimed to include a range of price points and encourage researching year-round rates for the best fit for your budget. If we missed your favorite, please let us know by sending an email to marketing@heyrhody.com

Providence

THE BEATRICE

Events like Providence Restaurant Weeks and Rhode Island Brew Fest make January perfect for a city sleepover. There’s nothing like knowing that after a night on the town, a beautifully appointed room – with a heated toilet seat – awaits. Since its 2021 opening, The Beatrice has received praise from Condé Nast Traveler (ranked #6 Best Hotel in the Northeast) and on Tripadvisor (#1 hotel in the Providence market). Elegant first impressions aside, this boutique hotel is full of heart (named for the owner’s beloved mom) with thoughtful details at every turn. Rooms are contemporary and comfortable, and while there is a long list of amenities, guests are quick to gush about the Dyson hair dryers and bidets (with various settings). Enjoy an Italian meal at posh onsite Bellini Providence, before heading to the private Bellini Rooftop for craft cocktails backdropped by the skyline. Along with ongoing deals, look for pop-up specials that connect stays with popular attractions. TheBeatrice.com

Daffodils from Dusk to Dawn at Hotel Viking For decades, all-volunteer non-profit Newport In Bloom has encouraged the planting of daffodils around town, resulting in 1,350,000 flowers and Newport Daffodil Days. The nearly month-long jubilee includes Daffy Deals during Newport Restaurant Week, plus a calendar of everything from races to dog parades. Plant yourself smack-dab in the action at Hotel Viking. The landmark lodgings offer a mix of modern and quaint, starting with its impressive exterior. Enter to find the lobby bar, access to One Bellevue Restaurant, and Hill Market, a convenient mini-cafe. Pre-game photo ops in nearby flower fields with services at the awardwinning SpaFjör, and finish the day outside at the courtyard fire pit beneath strands of lights, before heading to your room. HOTEL VIKING

Stargazing and Quiet Luxury at Weekapaug Inn During summertime, Weekapaug Inn is a parade of color with lobster boils, sundresses, and yellow pool umbrellas, but in the thick of winter, it’s equally spectacular. Far from bright lights, after dark, the back lawn becomes a stargazer’s wonderland. Adirondack chairs are at the ready, and if you’re lucky, the firepit is ablaze and s’mores kits are nearby; on those special nights when the stars align, embark on a moonlit paddle on Quonochontaug Pond led by the resident naturalist. Back inside, a cozy bed fitted with luxury linens awaits. Spend days playing board games by the fireplace in common rooms, or on beach or birding expeditions, donning boots borrowed from the Hunter closet. The atmosphere extends to The Restaurant, where chef Andrew Brooks serves farm-to-table dishes (don’t skip the biscuits). This gem has been recognized as one of the “Best Hotels in the World” by Travel + Leisure and is part of the Relais & Châteaux group. WeekapaugInn.com

PERFECT PICNIC ADD-ON

Dinner, a Show, and Breakfast in Matunuck

22

In the South Kingstown village of Matunuck, expect to find the trappings of a beach town worth its weight in salt: a surf shop, beloved pub, bar that hosts live music, and places for ice cream, pizza, sandwiches, and coffee. Within a small radius, there is also the renowned Matunuck Oyster Bar, and equally acclaimed barn playhouse, Bill Hanney’s Theatre by the Sea. The former brings gastronomic tourists from NYC and the latter puts on Broadwaycaliber shows – starting up with May’s A Chorus Line. Until 2021, there was no place nearby to stay (and avoid the pitch-black drive home). Enter Admiral Dewey Inn, a 12-guestroom house, locally owned and operated. Each morning a continental breakfast is served in the dining room, and if you spend time in the parlor playing board games or LPs, you’re sure to run into travelers on the same culinary, theatrical, or seaside adventures. Turn Gaspee Days into a Weekend with Gregory Hill Boutique Vacation Cottages Rhode Islanders need not wait until July to celebrate the red, white, and blue, when there’s Pawtuxet Village in June. This charming riverside enclave gets festooned with a flag on every pole along Broad Street in preparation for Gaspee Days, a commemoration of the 1772 burning of the HMS Gaspee, considered the first violent act against the Crown by the colonists leading up to the American Revolution. Activities are planned around the clock and the entire area feels like a party. Booking a Gregory Hill Boutique Cottage ensures you don’t miss a beat – no need to fret about parking or a designated driver. Each cottage is styled in coastal-chic perfection, so live like a Nancy Meyers character as you lounge on a plump sofa prior to venturing to the farmers market before Saturday’s parade, or perhaps enjoy the Perfect Picnic add-on while witnessing Sunday’s Burning of the Gaspee at Pawtuxet Park. There is some sort of fete happening year-round in Wickford. Even if you don’t go just to shop and dine, or experience village-wide events like Daffodil Days (April), Wicked Weeks (October), or the Festival of Lights (December), chances are you’ve been to the Wickford Art Festival. Each July, Wilson Park becomes a fairgrounds of canopy tents where browsers can view the work of over 200 artists in a wide variety of mediums. While there’s plenty of food available at the festival, village restaurants are just a half-mile walk away – with everything from juice bars to cafes to waterfront dining. Nearby is the Blue Beach Motel, an underthe-radar spot along Post Road. All 21 rooms and suites have been completely renovated with a shoreline palette of aqua, white, and gray. DYE HOUSE

While it may still feel like summer, the return of college students infuses a mix of fall and academia into the air. The city aims to impress with some kind of fest most ever y weekend – from seafood to veg to beer – and while the WaterFire 2024 schedule is TBD at press time, last September saw two full lightings. Downtown has many excellent hotels, but if you’re seeking a uniquely New England experience, head to the Olneyville area. Dye House is a boutique hotel and event space that takes its cue from its origins as a textile mill. Since opening in 2020, the owners have worked to be boosters of the neighborhood, connecting the dots for g uests to hyper-local activities, shops, and eats, including Wes’ Rib House, a beloved joint recently resuscitated. Love a good ghost story or want a tale of your own? Make a reservation at General Stanton Inn. Mindfully renovated and reopened in 2022, the grand yellow property is rich with history and has hosted notable guests since 1740, including being a “room where it happened” with Generals Washington and Lafayette, and a stop on the Underground Railroad. Visits must begin at the Tavern, where over a sumptuous meal with craft beers and specialty cocktails (save room for the skillet cookie with ice cream), servers are ready to dish about spectral encounters with The General, one of his young daughters, or the ghost cat. Cozy up in one of 15 well-appointed guest rooms, either updated Colonial spaces in the main house or deluxe coastal-themed rooms on the western side of the property, and consider sleeping with one eye open on spirit watch. Accommodation options include a room or suite at Hilltop Lodge, a tiny home, cottage, townhome, or cabin – each with their own amenities such as a fireplace and special views (water, forest, horses). Kathleen Flaherty

Sales Associate, Residential Properties & “The East Coast Rhody” “Love Where You Live” “Through resilience and perseverance, anything is possible.” No one knows this better than Kathleen Flaherty, whose life journey has been filled with many unexpected twists, turns, and challenges – all of which she has bravely faced with determination, versatility, and a commitment to community. A mother of four and a graduate from Johnson & Wales University, Kathleen has worn many hats in her career, from math interventionist, to real estate professional, to published author of children’s book An Octopus Named Mom. However, nine years ago, Kathleen suffered a traumatic brain injury that altered the course of her life forever. Her indomitable spirit saw her through, and she emerged stronger than ever, using the experience as a catalyst for personal growth – the perfect opportunity arising when she and her family moved to Barrington.

I’m excited to continue helping clients on their real estate journey while living life to the fullest and finding joy in the simple things. Rhode Island holds a special place in Kathleen’s heart. Growing up in Hog Island along the Narragansett Bay, you could say the ocean runs in her veins. Despite a background in education, Kathleen made the decision to pivot entirely to real estate, viewing her work as a way to “positively impact people’s lives, one transaction at a time.” Today, she is a full-time sales associate with RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES, member of the Greater Providence Board of Realtors, and has been recognized with the Circle of Excellence Gold Award. “I love the friendships and connections I’ve made with my clients while helping them,” says Kathleen, saying that it is her favorite part of the job. Kathleen has also garnered quite the digital presence through her Instagram account and persona, The East Coast Rhody (@theeastcoastrhody). This platform is a

true reflection of her unparalleled love for the Ocean State, through which she’s been supporting and promoting local businesses for the last six years in the form of thoughtful posts and stories. Unfortunately, Kathleen recently faced another formidable challenge – a serious back injury. Her days were filled with prolonged pain and, oftentimes, the inability to walk. But in true Kathleen Flaherty fashion, this did not slow her down one bit. She underwent not one but two major back surgeries, all while steadfastly fulfilling her role as both a devoted mother and dedicated real estate professional. This period of adversity only underscores Kathleen’s unwavering resilience, determination, and positivity. Kathleen continues to face every obstacle head-on, finding fulfillment in helping others navigate challenging times in their own lives. She finds joy in being an active member of the community, whether it’s in her personal life or professional role. “I wake up each morning with a heart full of

gratitude for my family, friends, clients, and my good health,” says Kathleen. Her commitment to community is a testament to her belief in the power of collaboration and mutual support, two things that were key in her own healing journey. To say Kathleen serves as a positive role model is an understatement. Her story continues to inspire those around her, not only as one of professional success, but a narrative woven with strength, family values, and deep appreciation for the local community. As for what’s next? “I’m excited to continue helping clients on their real estate journey,” says Kathleen, “while living life to the fullest and finding joy in the simple things.”

Alyssa Findley, MD, FAAD, FACMS Board Certified, Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeon & Dermatologist

Dr. Alyssa Findley’s story is one of passion, expertise, and a deep-rooted commitment to patient well-being. Her practice, FINDLEY DERMATOLOGY, is focused on patientcentered dermatological care, providing Mohs micrographic and reconstructive surgery for skin cancer, as well as surgical and cosmetic dermatology. Dr. Findley’s legacy is not only in the lives she transforms through her surgical expertise but in the paradigm shift she represents – where empathy and precision converge. Mohs, renowned for its effectiveness in treating various skin cancers, combines surgical expertise, pathology, and reconstructive artistry into a single visit. Offering the highest chance for a cure by visualizing all tissue margins and providing real-time microscopic examination of the tissue, it minimizes the removal of normal

skin, resulting in more favorable functional and cosmetic results. Patients leave surgery cancer-free and with the lowest likelihood for recurrence. Dr. Findley’s expertise extends beyond routine cases, as she is one of the few surgeons in the region with fellowship training to perform complex reconstruction and Mohs for melanoma. “As a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, I am dedicated to educating my patients about the importance of selecting a surgeon with the proper training to perform this procedure. By completing a rigorous surgical fellowship in Mohs surgery, cutaneous oncology, and complex reconstruction, a surgeon gains the instruction and expertise to ensure an optimal outcome and recovery for their patients,” says Dr. Findley, who holds an MD from Tufts University School of Medicine. She has performed thousands

of Mohs surgery procedures over the past decade, giving her ample experience to care for her patients in the best possible manner. Dr. Findley has completed an internal medicine internship, dermatology residency, and fellowship-level training, and is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) and member of other state and national medical associations. She is dual board certified by the American Board of Dermatology in both general dermatology and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery. At the heart of Dr. Findley’s practice is a commitment to patient-centered care. Embracing a philosophy that extends beyond clinical procedures, she operates under local anesthesia, ensuring the comfort of her patients while cultivating an environment conducive to forming personal connections. “My staff and I are afforded the opportunity to really get to know our patients. I hit the jackpot when I chose my profession. The chance to build long-term relationships with my patients and engage in work I’m passionate about brings me endless fulfillment.” Whether the patient needs skin cancer surgery, benign lesion removal, or a cosmetic procedure, the goal is always to safely achieve the most optimal outcome. When it comes to minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, Dr. Findley helps patients achieve a well-rested, refreshed look. “When patients feel confident in their skin, it really shines through. Whether they’re looking for a subtle enhancement or a complete rejuvenation, we offer a wide range of procedures, including Botox, Dysport, dermal fillers, PRP, microneedling, chemical peels, and more,” says Dr. Findley. Even for those who don’t have any pressing cosmetic or skin concerns, Dr. Findley recommends scheduling a full-body skin exam performed by a board-certified dermatologist to potentially detect and diagnose skin cancer or other issues the patient may otherwise believe are harmless. Dr. Findley’s extensive training, patientcentric approach, and unwavering dedication make her the trusted choice for comprehensive and effective care.

Despite the turbulent environment created by the pandemic – personnel shortages, supply chain disruption, transportation limitations, and more – Aspects, Inc. prevailed. “We had the very best year of sales in the history of the company,” Trisha says proudly. On any given day, she can be found juggling multiple agenda items at once: sales, operation, accounting, personnel, marketing, research, and design. Trisha thrives in this setting, known for her gogetter attitude, solution-oriented approach, and lead-by-example mentality. “One of my favorite aspects of my job is that every day I wear many hats,” says Trisha, who is invested in every part of the manufacturing process, from concept to product. “I decided many years ago that it was imperative that we remain true to our roots and keep all of our manufacturing in the United States,” explains Trisha. She is proud to share that Aspects, Inc. continues to craft all of their feeders right here in Little Rhody.

DEBRA L’HEUREUX Certified Matchmaker

310 Maple Avenue Suite L05-A, Barrington, 401-289-0900 GetReadyToDate.com

JENNIFER JONES RASHLEIGH Artist/Owner

“I’m in love, I’m in love and I don’t care who knows it,” says the character Buddy in the delightful 2003 movie Elf. It’s a joyous moment in the film and the impression one gets from the radiating smile of Debra L’Heureux. “I was hit by Cupid’s arrow at 49 and found the love of my life,” she beams. This profound feeling caused Debra to leave her longtime job in academia to become a matchmaker and start a company which she named GET READY TO DATE. Along with a knack for connecting people, Debra has solid creds – she received her certification from the Matchmaking Institute and is a graduate of the Relationship Coaching Institute. On her Get Ready to Date website she keeps a blog and a Dear Debra page with the kinds of dating do’s and don’ts you don’t get from an app. “My clients say I have a discerning and passionate heart and am a consummate romantic. I possess the

tenacious resolve of a headhunter to introduce clients to their next great love,” she says. Debra’s process begins with a complimentary consultation. “I create what I call a second chance for love blueprint. I interview clients who have decided that finding love is a top priority in their life. I comb New England to find quality matches that clients would not find on their own.” While nothing gives this matchmaker more joy than finding new love for widows, she works with any clients over 40 and the demand for her services is clear, as many singles looking for love have visited her Barrington office. “It’s never too late to dream a new dream and have the courage to love again,” says Debra before citing a favorite quote: “If it’s not mad passionate love, it’s a waste of time. There are too many mediocre things in life and love should not be one of them!”

hen East Side homeowner Leah Pisari came across the trending interior hashtag “museum bookstore,” it resonated, giving a name to her own predilection toward styling bookcases, composing galler y walls, and furnishing spaces with tactile materials and graphic punch. Indeed, the home she shares with her husband Ed and their two pets since March 2020, is skillfully outfitted with storied heirlooms, art work, and trinkets. “I have traditional elements like the green couch and the dining room table, while mixing in the mid-centur y console and eclectic decorating ,” says Pisari.

Raised in North Kingstown, Pisari left the state for Maryland to earn her Master of Fine Arts, then lived and worked in New York City. When she landed a job at her undergrad alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, as a visual media specialist at the Harrington School, she knew she wanted to live in Providence – particularly the East Side – for its walkability and access to cafes and downtown. “We viewed three or four places, fell in love with our home, and got it right in time,” she recalls. “We bought the condo weeks before the COVID shutdown! We closed on March 1.”

Going Places

A trio of Rhody entrepreneurs turning hobbies into side-hustles By Ruthie Wood

R

hode Island has a histor y of food trucks reaching all the way back to 1872, and in recent years, food truck catering for bites, meals, or desserts has been a booming trend for events along with outdoor markets. But the trucks don’t have to be just for food. Three women – Gianna Grande, Jill Lucena, and Chelsea Smith – are among those capitalizing on convenience by turning hobbies – and sometimes vehicles – into their livelihoods.

Photos courtesy of (clockwise) Boho Bead Bar, Biscotti Bar, and Sea Smith Candle Co.

ITALIAN COOKIES Gianna Grande’s micro version of a dessert truck is a peddler cart named The Biscotti Bar. The idea was born out of a love of the family tradition of baking over a dozen different kinds of cookies and crafting the assortment into trays around the holidays. “Biscotti means twice baked. It is baked once in a loaf, then sliced, and baked again on its side.” Pistachio, almond, and oatmeal chocolate chip are her best-selling flavors, but the bar also offers other types of Italian cookies to choose from – including wine biscuits – a Grande favorite; all are baked with help from her mother and sister. Hosts can order a personalized Italian cookie bar and have cookie bags as party favors. North Providence, TheBiscottiBar.square.site

After 20 years of handcrafting jewelry from sea glass to upcycled materials, Jill Lucena created Boho Bead Bar in July of 2023 to share the experience of “working with color and blending materials to create unique, meaningful pieces,” she explains. The bead bar – an eight-footlong table with Lucena at the helm, crafting bracelets on the spot – allows individuals to design their own bracelet, from wire to beads, and watch it be made in under three minutes via a bead spinner. It’s a chance to have “family and friends laughing and creating together,” Lucena says, and at the end of the night, all guests receive a signature bracelet designed by the host to commemorate the special event. Cumberland, BohoBeadBar.wixsite.com/boho

For her winter wedding , Chelsea Smith wanted candles to set the ambiance, but struggled to find a non-toxic, long-burning candle, so she made her own from soy wax and essential oils, filling vintage mason jars. Before long , she turned her hobby into Sea Smith Candle Co.; more recently, she and her husband transformed a horse trailer into a traveling candle cart allowing Smith to visit local markets and events. Pouring is not done on-site but party hosts can work with Smith to select or customize fragrances in advance. “Love Spell and Crème Brulee are probably two of my most popular,” says Smith, who offers that her candle cart can be a fun element at bridal and baby showers. A

dozen or so years ago, Little Compton-based Taylor Johnston was the full-time horticulturist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Legendary style photographer Bill Cunningham was in town, photographing people in their environment for his weekly column in the New York Times Style section, and he snapped a photo of Johnston, wearing what she calls “a big-box store wardrobe.” When she saw the published photo, she felt embarrassed. “I was not putting any effort into how I looked,” she explains. “It really made me want to do something about the problem of women’s workwear.” Gamine, founded in 2014, is an apparel company focused on outfitting women who work in a variety of industries where clothing gets dirty, worn-out, and tattered quickly and easily. Think gardeners, farmers, or even set designers – women like Johnston, who work hard and get dirty. “Ten years ago, workwear companies such as Carhartt didn’t make clothing for women,” she says. “Women’s body types can be difficult. But just because we get dirty when we work, that doesn’t mean we don’t want attractive, well-designed, quality garments.” The term “gamine,” Johnston explains, is a French word that roughly translates to a woman with a boyish or mischievous charm. Having sewn things her whole life, some encouragement led to experimenting. She cut patterns and made a few samples. When she wore a pair of jeans that she’d made and was asked about them, she knew she was onto something. “I realized I could leverage some resources. I could carve out a niche and solve some problems about women’s workwear.” So the gardener and nursery-woman added clothing designer and small business owner to her resume. But the practicality of making stylish workwear for women

also offered Johnston another opportunity. “It’s about celebrating vintage textiles that tell the story of the American worker,” she explains. Lots of investigating led to great finds, including an American-based company that she says makes the softest, most rugged gear out of hemp and organic cotton. “It’s important for us to feel like we’re contributing to the idea of workwear rather than making mere reproductions.” Explore the Gamine website and you’ll find stylish, well-crafted but practical, useful garments. Dungarees, one of the most popular items, are fitted and built to last. There are bibs and coveralls, shorts, sweaters, work shirts and more. Most items retail under $200. You can picture yourself wearing them to work as well as to a leisurely Sunday brunch, which was the whole idea, Johnston says. Where and how Gamine will grow isn’t something Johnston, who’s 41, thinks a lot about. She sees the different hats she wears as extremely complementary and the processes as organic. They are about crafting, designing, cultivating, exploring, and celebrating values, whether it’s the heritage of a plant or a thread or a process. Her inspiration is all around her, including her farm. “Rhode Island is a central, inspiring force in all that I do,” she says. She and Gamine are here to stay. 3988 Main Road, Tiverton (shop by appointment); GamineWorkwear.com MARCH 2024 | HeyRhody.com

Rhody Beer Crawl at Your Doorstep Entrepreneur crafts subscription box to encourage sampling local brews By Abbie Lahmers

R

hode Island’s growing craft beer scene isn’t quite as small as it used to be – and thanks to a new deliver y ser vice, soon it will be more connected than ever. “ The spark for BrewBox ignited during my travels, particularly a beer tour in Belgium, where my curiosity and appreciation for craft beer flourished,” shares beer enthusiast Bruno DaCosta. Seeking a way to curate a brewer y pilgrimage of sorts without the journey, he created the state’s first beer subscription box, set to kick off in April. For subscribers, the process is simple : sign up by choosing a preferred plan, available in boxes of six, 12, or 16 cans, and then browsing the monthly roster of ales and lagers, which are delivered right to your doorstep. A growing list of partners so far includes Apponaug Brewing , Narragansett Beer, and Shaidzon Beer Co., and DaCosta aims to have 10 when BrewBox launches. “Parallel to my love for craft beer, the communal aspect of traveling deeply resonated with me,” says DaCosta, who’s equally passionate about collaborating with local businesses, providing an outlet for them to expand their exposure and reach, getting cans into the hands of customers who may have never ventured out to their brick-and-mortar. “BrewBox seeks not only to offer a diverse beer experience but also to build a community. Through events and interactions with breweries, subscribers can connect with like-minded enthusiasts, fostering and enhancing the vibrant craft beer community in Rhode Island.” And once subscribers find their new fave brew, the Ocean State is small enough that it’s easy to motor over and see what else is on tap! Visit GetBrewBox.com for updates and to subscribe in the spring. MARCH 2024 | HeyRhody.com

The Reincarnation of OT

Forme r s p e ake asy propr i etor ta ke s h i s pop ular Portug uese-fusion fare to B arring ton By Gina Mastrostefano

I

n its first iteration, Oxford Tavern, affectionately known as OT, was an intimate speakeasy that operated with limited hours, and guests could only find out the menu the day of via a Facebook post – a true IYKYK situation. The East Providence tavern built a loyal clientele over the years while serving up some of the East Bay’s most unique dishes, and allowed patrons to get up close and personal while they watched their food prepared in front of them at the bar. Seating was tight, but chef and owner Alan Manchester was serving up big flavor in his dishes. The move to Barrington has introduced a larger floor plan and an even larger menu, while maintaining a cool and cozy atmosphere. As we made our way down Maple Avenue to visit the new location, venturing deeper into the sleepy neighborhood, we spotted the warm glow of Oxford Tavern, where it now occupies the old Billy’s location. Inside, the dining room was bustling, and locals filled the bar, enjoying cocktails and college basketball on the TV.

While upholding their tradition of offering an impressive amount of specials, Oxford Tavern has cultivated a permanent menu since their move, which I would lovingly describe as Portug uese-American gastropub fare. With about a dozen craft cocktails to choose from, my partner went with an Oxford Manhattan, and I had the Spicy Pineap ple Marg that was complete with a fresh pineapple garnish and a tajin rim. Right out of the gate, we enjoyed one of the most unique starters I’ve had to date, and I love a creative appetizer – the Fried Spaghetti Sticks are tossed in a spicy seasoning , and served with

fresh bread and olive oil. We admittedly went a bit overboard on the apps, trying the Portuguese-Style Egg Rolls, two flavors of wings (the Mozambique and the Thai), and lastly the Hickory Smoked Bacon-Wrapped Scallops, deep fried and bursting at the seams. All of the above were spicy, shimmering , and savory. I also ordered a bowl of the chef ’s special soup of the day: a seafood medley chowder that was overflowing with lobster, clams, and baby shrimp, garnished with corn and potato chunks. For our main course, my boyfriend settled on the Rib-Eye Steak, and much like how his eyes tend to be bigger than his stomach, this steak was bigger than his head – though we’re not the type to complain about too much food! I went with our server’s suggestion, the Pan-Fried Veal Cutlet Parmesan. The veal was cooked to

perfection with a light breading and smothered in a tang y red tomato sauce and cheese. As you could probably guess, we were too full for dessert, but we got to enjoy some facetime with Manchester, who has been the brains behind the operation since its early days in East Providence. In typical Rhody fashion, we chatted about our mutual connections and six degrees of separation across the state, including my dad, a former customer in EP. While these days Manchester spends more time “behind the curtain,” he has more room to devise great things for Oxford Tavern.

Food News By Ken Abrams

The return of a Providence BBQ institution Originally established in 1973, Wes’ Rib House reopened in late January under new ownership with minimal fanfare as word leaked out on social media that the beloved rib joint was back in business. The new ownership team from the Crisp Restaurant Group also operates Providence Coal Fired Pizza. In addition to their famous ribs, the menu includes Southern fried chicken, vegan pulled pork, and fried catfish. “Wes’ was known for great food for a long time and we want to keep that tradition going,” says Aaron Jaehnig, an operating partner among those leading Wes’ 2.0. “We peeled the menu back to basics for now – straightforward family-style classic barbecue. We’re going to run a lot of specials and bring back crowd favorites as time goes on.” Jaehnig is also booking music and comedy in the renovated upstairs listening room. “We’re trying to ease the pain of Dusk closing,” he notes, with many former employees of the venue joining the Wes’ team. Live entertainment is scheduled for Thursdays through Sundays for now, with expanded offerings going forward. Providence, WesRibHouse.com

New Newport eatery is a blast from the past A new hangout with a retro atmosphere is taking over the space formerly occupied by Celtica Public House. Restaurateur Scott Kirmil, chef Joey Piotti, and the team at Inked Restaurant Group are opening The Quencher, named after a legendary dive bar in Boston that Kirmil and his wife once frequented. “ We wanted to create a cozy bar that has good food,” says Kirmil. “Some of our favorite spots are these places that surprise you when they come out with amazing food. closed a while back. It’s a good barroom name, we wanted to keep that going.” “The menu features Italian bar food, including pizza, pasta made from scratch, and shareable bar snacks like fried smelts, arancini, and crispy polpette,” says Kirmil. “The vibe is ‘50s and ’60s style, old-school rock and roll music, rockabilly, and doowop.” The Quencher will have regular entertainment including karaoke, comedy, and outdoor music on the waterview roof deck overlooking Newport Harbor. After taking a break in 2023, Narragansett Restaurant Week returns this spring, running March 2229. Now in its 13th year, it’s one of the longest running restaurant weeks in the state. “I’m hearing a lot of enthusiasm about the week,” says Peg Fradette of the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce. “Our kickoff party is Thursday, March 21 with about 1015 restaurants participating at The Towers in Narragansett. There will be food samples, drinks, and live music.” Expect to enjoy offerings from popular eateries like George’s of Galilee, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Coast Guard House, and other favorites. “ Winter can be a really difficult time for our restaurants. We are so lucky to have them stay open and viable,” says Fradette. During the off-season months before Easter, the week of dining specials gives restaurants a boost and generates excitement for local foodies. “There’s something special about holding it at The Towers, seeing the ocean as we come out of winter and welcome spring. It’s very charming , warm, and inviting ; it has a special vibe. People return year after year.” NarragansettCOC.com Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
