“If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” —Harry S. Truman (33rd President of the United States) “There are times when even the best manager is like the little boy with the big dog — waiting to see where the dog wants to go so he can take him there.” —Lee Iacocca (former president and CEO of Chrysler) “If a dog will not come to you after having looked you in the face, you should go home and examine your conscience.” —Woodrow Wilson (28th President of the United States) I am undeniably a dog lover. We recently adopted a puppy that was abandoned and found its way to a shelter. We already have a Bassett hound, named Sophia. As you would imagine, Sophia is not a high-energy dog, but she is very loving and also very calm. Sophia lost her sister Chloe recently — Chloe lived a good life to the age of 15 (105 in dog years). We believed that Sophia would benefit from a new dog family member. Over the past few weeks since the two have become siblings, it is remarkable to see how each is changing and learning from one another. Darby, the new puppy, is full of energy (and sharp baby teeth) when he isn’t sleeping. Darby is helping Sophia to accelerate her exercise, by necessity. She is playing and running around more. Darby, too, is gaining wisdom from her older sister — he is learning what is and what is not acceptable. Some light biting while frolicking is allowed, but there is a definite limit, after which Darby gets a light bite from Sophia. Over time, Darby will learn the ‘rules of dogs’. Since Darby was likely alone on his own in the woods in Northern Arizona before being found and taken to the dog shelter, he fears things – the barks of other dogs while on his walk, new people who come into our house, just to name a few. Sophia will teach Darby that these are normal comings and goings. He doesn’t have to be afraid. There are some interesting articles in this issue on the changing workforce. There is one on how to entice Millennials to enter the manufacturing field, and there is an article that asks “Is 70 the new 65?” with our US workforce often remaining in industry longer than they ever have. Darby and Sophia are your employees. One is the Millennial and one, though not a senior citizen, is older, and akin to one of your seasoned, established employees. Mentoring is not something that comes naturally to everyone. A mentor in the workplace is a person who provides guidance to a less-experienced employee, the mentee. A mentor is a role model who shares knowledge and advice to help the employee grow professionally. Mentors gain from the mentoring relationship, too.The opportunity to teach or advise others can increase the mentor’s confidence and own job satisfaction. The mentor is required to listen to the concerns of the employee and may develop a better understanding of employee issues and stronger communication skills. If the mentor is a supervisor, mentoring can improve her supervisory skills. I encourage you to seek out employees in your organization who you feel have the aptitude and the desire to mentor others. Help them gain the skills, with formal training, if necessary. It will clearly improve your organization. We will know the outcome of our Presidential election when we next go to print. Hmm. Until next issue, I wish you the best, and God Bless Our Troops!

NUNTMA Partners with Tech Colleges to Develop Apprenticeship Program for Skilled High-Tech Machinists Targeting a strong national demand for skilled machinists who can code and run CNC (computer numerical controlled) machines, the northern Utah chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association (NUNTMA) is launching Machine Utah, a program for apprentices who can earn pay and benefits while simultaneously completing their education and on-the-job training. Machine Utah, which starts in March, received a $150,000 grant from the Utah Cluster Acceleration Partnership (UCAP) program. Eligible participants, who have completed high school and are at least 18 years old, will receive 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours in technical education over a four-year period. NUNTMA is coordinating the program with at least a dozen Utah manufacturers who will be taking on new apprentices and many of whom have agreed to reimburse tuition costs for students. “There is a huge need for skilled machinists,” Maddie Dahl, NUNTMA chapter executive, explains. “This is an investment for both the Announcements Continued Page 8

and fabricating industry, said that he approached NUNTMA about establishing an apprenticeship program. “Skilled machinists are the lifeblood for manufacturers but the local labor pool of skilled workers has been tight,” Wardle added, “and we realized that many of us were competing to hire the same people.” Wardle explained that today’s machinists must understand computer code to operate the high-tech generation of CNC machines which cut and sculpt manufacturing materials, encompassing everything from metal to plastic and textiles and fabrics – skills that once were accomplished by hand. “The job options are virtually limitless,” he said, adding that machinists are needed in aerospace, medical, recreational, energy, mining and other industries. And, Wardle explained that STEM program students could use the apprenticeship as a stepping stone to further their education and become an engineer. Participants who complete the apprenticeship program will receive a journeyman’s certificate, which is issued by the U.S. Department of Labor and is valid wherever the individual decides to work in the country. In addition, students holding a journeyman’s certificate and 25 credit hours can receive an associate of applied science degree in apprenticeship from Weber State University. New apprentices likely will start at between $10 and $12 an hour.

individual and the company and a great opportunity for students to complete their college education without incurring student debt while gaining a successful career foothold in manufacturing.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that job opportunities for machinists across the country are growing at an average of at least six percent per year with a median annual pay of $41,510. In some job markets, such as the Midwest, machinists start out at double the minimum wage, and can command annual wages of up to $70,000 or more. Apprentices will have the flexibility to select the geographical area and companies they would like to work for during the program. Students likely will be expected to work 40hour weeks which also will accommodate their school schedules. For example, JD Machining will schedule two apprentices on an alternating basis, where they work a half day and go to classes the remaining half. “Ideally, we are looking for goal oriented students who are highly motivated and have a strong work ethic and who demonstrate mechanical aptitude, a love of technology and are interested in the high tech world of manufacturing,” Dahl said. As Skill Requirements Increase, More Manufacturing Jobs Go Unfilled Amid anxiety about the disappearance of factory jobs, thousands of them are going unfilled across the U.S. The number of open manufacturing jobs has been rising since 2009, and this year stands at the highest level in 15 years, according to Labor Department data. Factory work has evolved over the past 15 years or so as companies have invested in advanced machinery requiring new sets of skills. Many workers who were laid off in recent decades—as technology, globalization and recession wiped out lower-skilled roles—don’t have the skills to do today’s jobs. The mismatch poses a problem for the economy, stymieing the ability of businesses to increase production and weighing on growth, executives say. Gary Miller has observed manufacturing’s evolution firsthand. When he started at Ohio-based Kyocera SGS Precision Tools Inc. in 1989, it employed 550 production workers. Despite shedding half its workers, it now produces twice as much, thanks to higher-skilled employees and equipment such as computer-controlled machine tools, which cost as much as $500,000 each.

Mr. Miller, KSPT’s director of training, struggles to find technicians with the electrical and mechanical skills needed to maintain the complex machines. One electrical maintenance role went unfilled for over a year as he searched for someone with an associate’s or bachelor’s diploma, ideally in manufacturing engineering.“Back 15 years or so, the machines weren’t as sophisticated as they are now,” he said. Having that job unfilled put “a very big impact on our bottom line.” His problems are mirrored across the country. Openings for manufacturing jobs this year have averaged 353,000 a month, up from 311,000 in 2015 and 122,000 in 2009. As manufacturing has become more technology-driven, its share of managers and professionals has risen, according to the Labor Department. In 2000, 53% of manufacturing workers had no education past high school. By 2015, that share had fallen 9 percentage points, while the share with college or graduate degrees increased 8 points.

Research-intensive sectors, such as pharmaceutical or aerospace manufacturing, often seek candidates with science and engineering degrees. Other hard-to-fill roles are middle-skill positions, such as maintenance technician, that require education or training beyond high school, like an apprenticeship or a course at community college. Traditional skilled manufacturing jobs, such as die maker or welder, have been drawing an insufficient number of new recruits as the manufacturing industry shrank. The “upskilling” in the manufacturing sector mirrors a broader bias in

the economy toward more educated workers. In 2016, college-educated workers for the first time outnumbered workers with a high-school diploma or less, according to a study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce. Companies say education and training systems haven’t evolved alongside industry needs. As manufacturing lost jobs to technology and outsourcing, young people pursued college degrees or jobs in the growing services sector. Colleges and high schools reduced their focus on technical education. Eight in 10 manufacturing executives said the expanding skills gap will affect their ability to keep up with customer demand, according to a 2015 survey by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, an industry-backed nonprofit. It takes an average of 94 days to recruit for highly skilled roles such as scientist or engineer, and 70 days for skilled production workers, they found. That is despite a large pool of available labor. Between June 2015 and June 2016, there was an average of two unemployed manufacturing workers for each open position, according to the Labor Department. The fate of the 1,400 workers set to lose their jobs at Indiana’s Carrier plant illustrates the shift. After the Indianapolis manufacturer of gas furnaces and fan coils said it would move jobs to Mexico, Republican presidential nominee DonaldTrump made the plant a talking point on the campaign trail, promising to curb future outsourcing by imposing harsh tariffs and renegotiating trade deals. Some say there is a simple solution: pay more. “No one says, ‘We can’t find the workers we need even though we raised wages significantly,’” said Brad Markell, executive director of the AFL-CIO Industrial Union Council.

“If there’s a scarcity of something, you raise wages.” But companies say it isn’t that simple. Mr. Magee, at Akron Tool & Die, said he would lose a bidding war to bigger firms in his area, and it won’t solve the problem of too few skilled workers.Instead, he and others aim to lure a new generation through apprenticeships, field trips to factories, and partnerships with schools that highlight manufacturing’s innovative nature and career possibilities. But the opportunities aren’t even across the manufacturing landscape. Sectors with high-margin products, such as pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturing, can often afford to pay more than makers of more traditional manufactured goods such as heavy machinery. Those salary differentials were among the reasons Brandon Lamoncha, sales manager at family-owned Humtown Products, a Columbiana, Ohio, supplier to the metalcasting industry, lost one of his most gifted engineers—his brother. Unable to find a replacement with his brother’s computer-aided design skills, he is training one of his current employees in the software after his brother left for what he saw as a more exciting and lucrative role with a medical-device manufacturer. Mr. Lamoncha said he and his family were sad to see him leave but encouraged him to take the offer.“We’d love to keep you, but we can’t afford you,” they told him. “Never Let People Think They’re Owners If You Aren’t Willing To Let Them Own.” It’s not hard to see the appeal of the quote, attributed to education experts Steve Gruenert and Todd Whitaker. It sends the message that much of the job of the leader is to monitor the culture of an organization, but not to dictate it. The leader establishes a tone, draws the lines. But ultimately the organization is defined by the people who surround it—members, staffers, customers. It challenges leaders to be at once hands-on and hands-off. And that balancing act is trickier than it’s ever been. In recent years, the idea of strict top-down leadership has taken a beating, thanks to ROWEs, holacracies, remote staffing, and other structures designed to let employees take ownership of their duties. But Zappos’ high-profile experiment in employee self-management has struggled, Amazon’s online system of reviewing coworkers themselves led to some scrums, and distributed staffs require a lot of care and feeding. In the July issue of the Harvard Business Review, Zappos’ John Bunch and a trio of leadership scholars do A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

So however you arrange your staff structure, you’re still back to the same old question: How much do you step in and how much do you pull back when it comes to managing people? Harvard Business School’s Ethan Bernstein and management expert Niko Canner offer a few answers to that question by looking at why leaders lapse into the opposite of employee empowerment: micromanagement. In some ways, they write, new technology has made it easier to keep looking over everybody’s shoulders: “We start off trusting, but verifying, that people are clear about the desired outcomes and capable of delivering on them. But we’ve become so great at verifying, thanks to our “smart,” all-seeing workplaces, that the sponsor can observe the owner’s every move.” But the core enabler for micromanagement is not new-fangled technology but old-fashioned trust—and leadership. Too often, projects get derailed because leaders failed to clearly articulate what the goals of a project are, mutually understand its constraints, and provide enough oversight to give the employee to sense that the work has value. All of this puts pressure on leaders to be honest both with themselves and their employees about how much freedom they have. “Keep it real,” Canner and Bernstein advise. “Never let people think they’re owners if you aren’t willing to let them own. If you’re the real owner, say so, make clear that the team member’s role is to help you, and explain what kind of help you need.” The good news about all this is that the duty of leading an organization remains secure—however far away and self-empowered and self-directed workers are, somebody needs to set the tone about how work gets done and why that work is important.

Lockheed-Built NASA Probe Launches On Mission To Fetch Asteroid Sample

back to earth. In 2023, OSIRIS-REx will send a specially-built sample container back into the earth’s atmosphere at speeds topping 24,000 mph before parachuting in to land in the deserts of Utah.

A NASA probe built by C o l o r a d o - b a s e d Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. to collect sample from the asteroid Bennu launchedThursday evening from Cape Canaveral, Florida, starting a seven-year mission to bring back the first large sample from an asteroid.

The OSIRS-REx spacecraft itself will go a solar orbit a safe distance away from earth.

An Atlas V rocket, built and launched by Centennial-based United Launch Alliance, blasted off shortly after 5 p.m. in Denver and carried the $800 million robotic spacecraft into orbit on the first leg of its 509 million mile flight.

The mission — called officially the Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer — is led by Dante Lauretta, a University of Arizona researcher. Lockheed Martin Martin Space Systems (LMSS) was the prime contractor designing and assembling the core spacecraft. The team won the nod from NASA in 2011 to do the mission as part of the space agency’s New Frontiers program. LMSS employs more than 4,000 people at its local headquarters campus. It has a long history of making planetary probes for NASA missions, including the Juno spacecraft orbiting Jupiter now, and the MAVEN spacecraft circling Mars.

The OSIRIS-REx probe, built in Jefferson County, is programmed to fly to Bennu in just under three years. It will circle Bennu, which is slightly larger than five football fields, and take readings of it with onboard instruments for several months, sending back data for researchers.

The company also drew on its history building the Stardust spacecraft, which gathered gases from a comet tail and return the samples to earth in 2006.

Then, it will extend a 10-foot-long arm and gather as much as 4.4 pounds of dirt, rocks and dust off Bennu’s surface and begin the journey

More than 200 LMSS employees had a direct hand in building OSIRISREx, the company says. Source: Denver Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Mountain region team is pictured below on this page. From the beginning, Star Metal Fluids LLC has been dedicated to providing the metalworking industry with the latest in technology to meet the demanding challenges and constant changes of today’s high-tech applications. Russ Kurzawski, founder and owner of the family owned company, says, “The experienced team at Star Metal Fluids learns about their customers’ unique applications and we find the best possible metalworking fluid to not just “meet your needs” but improve finishes, tolerances and part size.” He continued, “You won’t find the products we carry in a catalog — we specialize — so we can offer you the technical expertise and products you will find nowhere else. Our strong customer relationships, combined with tested and measurable product recommendations, have been the key to the company’s growth and success.” Russ gained his experience in the metalworking industry during his 11year tenure at Garrett Industr ial Supply, a division of Gar rett/ Allied Signal, with another 2-years at Kennametal. At Garret Supply, Russ started in the warehouse and progressed into sales

Jason Hicken, Sales Manager for Star Metal Fluids, says, “High-pressure coolant systems can provide important benefits, especially when working with difficult metals like superalloys, titanium and stainless steel. High-pressure coolant, typically operating at 1,000 psi or higher, works by applying the fluid directly to the point of cut with enough force to prevent vapor formation. The benefits include superior lubrication and cooling, less tool wear, higher cutting speeds and better chip control, resulting in less downtime and increased productivity.” In fact, one of Star Metal Fluids customers, a Fortune 1000 aerospace company, documented their savings when they switched to Star Metal Fluid’s products. “We reduced and in some cases eliminated 2nd operations, drastically cut down on hand finishing, reduced scrap, and saw improved tool life. In all, we estimated $2 million in savings with Star Metal Fluids products.”

and sales management. During his years in the corporate world, he saw a need for a company that specializes in serving the metalworking industry with MWF products, and founded Star Metal Fluids. Russ was born in the Baby Boomer generation, but his quest for not only adopting but also embracing new technology is more akin to the millennial generation (You could say he is a ‘Boomillenial’), and his entire team is comprised of this younger generation of Millennials. Russ is a passionate, driven entrepreneur and he invests into the business for continuous improvements, from the business systems, to the inventory and equipment, to customer and employee training, to the website – all to better service his customers. Russ is also a cancer survivor, and perhaps this accounts for some of his fervor and absolute dedication to excellence.

Russ has enormous respect for the Qualichem line of products, but he also recognizes that in the end he must meet the needs of all of the company’s customers. Russ says, “We offer our own branded Bosse metalworking fluids for customers who request a valued competitive option, and we have just added Chemetall line to our product portfolio.” Russ says the Chemetall line offers us additional metalworking fluids, products for cleaning, corrosion protection, and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing). These products include the trade names known to the industry such as Oxsilan®, Gardobond®, Ardrox® and Naftoseal®, to name a few, are used in the most diverse industry sectors from automotive to aerospace, and have played a leading role in shaping metal treatment.

Metalworking Fluids (MWF’s) Today, Star Metal Fluids is the largest distributor for the fine line of Qualichem products in the world (yes the entire world). Star Metal Fluids added the QualiChem line to their product portfolio nearly a decade ago, Russ says, “QualiChem employs a team of chemists that manufacture some of the best metalworking coolants in the world, and they continue to introduce new innovative technologies that benefit our customers.”

Customers who install a reverse osmosis water system typically see a 20-25% reduction in their water-miscible metalworking fluid costs. U.S. businesses added a solid 177,000 jobs in August, according to a private survey, suggesting that hiring remains healthy after two months

Payroll processor ADP said the job growth was driven by services firms such as retailers, financial services firms, and professional and business services, which includes higher-paying jobs like accountants, engineers and architects.

The steady hiring could help fuel stronger growth in the second half of this year. Growth slumped in the winter and spring, falling to an annual rate of just 1 percent.

Yet consumers are more confident and are spending at a healthy clip, likely encouraged by robust hiring and signs that wages are picking up. Consumer confidence reached an 11-month high in August, lifted by a brighter outlook on the job market. The ADP data cover only private businesses and often diverge from the official figures. Economists forecast that the government’s jobs report, to be released Friday, will show a gain of 180,000 jobs, according to data provider FactSet.The unemployment rate is forecast to fall to 4.8 percent.

Employers added 255,000 jobs in July and a robust 292,000 in June, which was the most in eight months. Most analysts expect that those healthy gains make it more likely the Federal Reserve will raise the short-term interest rate it controls by December. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, which helps compile the ADP report, pointed out in conference call with reporters that the government’s jobs data in August typically comes in low and then is revised higher. He predicts the upcoming report will show that roughly 150,000 jobs were added, but will later be revised in the following months to as high as 190,000. The low initial figure typically occurs because many companies report their hiring figures late to the government given low staff levels in August. The government also has difficulty seasonally adjusting the figures to reflect back-to-school hiring. Large companies added 70,000 jobs in August, the ADP report said, the most since February. Illinois Firms Buy 26 Acres In Westminster For Industrial Development Two Illinois-based real estate firms have acquired a 26-acre-parcel in Westminster with plans to build 324,000 square feet of industrial space. Conor Commercial Real Estate andWHI Real Estate Partners L.P. purchased the land, located at the southwest corner of West 120th Avenue and Huron Street, and will construct four speculative industrial buildings, dubbed the Park 12 Hundred Tech Center, there. One building will total 172,200 square feet, while two others will be 58,500 square feet each and the fourth will house 35,000 square feet. “Our committed partnership with WHI Real Estate and demonstrated experience throughout the country will support a seamless redevelopment process of this underutilized site into a desirable Class A property serving a growing number of businesses looking to maximize on the benefits that the northwest submarket has to offer,” said Sven Tustin, vice president of Conor Commercial Real Estate. Groundbreaking on the project is expected in March 2017, with completion scheduled in January 2018. The northwest market has a limited supply of industrial space, and demand for such space is high across metro Denver, which motivated the ConorWHI partnership to move on the project, Tustin said. A string of new industrial projects have been announced in the last month, totaling 1.4 million square feet of space, though Park 12 Hundred is the first of these located in the western half of the metro area. New projects by DCT Industrial, Majestic Realty Co. and The Opus Group announced in August are all located in Aurora.

it’s common for pets to have chips implanted. But now as many as 50,000 people worldwide have decided to have them implanted in themselves for various uses, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Proponents cited by theWSJ touted the chips’ simplicity and efficiency: Because they’re implanted in a person’s body, they’re virtually impossible to lose. One person said he has multiple tags embedded in his arm. One opens his apartment door, another his office’s parking gate, and another contains business contact information, the report said. Other uses floated by the WSJ include holding important medical information the way some people have necklaces or bracelets with instructions for medical personnel, or holding identifying information that airline passengers can use to board flights.

OSHA Compliant Work Platforms

It’s that notion that RFID chips can be a secure identifier that has drawn some employers’ attention. Early last year, a Swedish office building gained some notoriety for offering to have employees who worked in the building tagged for easier entrance and to use various office functions, such as the photocopier, BBC News reported.

In that instance, employees were given a choice in the matter, but BBC News added that the project’s backers believe we’re not far from the day when such tagging will be mandatory for many people.

to schedule a launch as a primary payload aboard an Atlas 5 rocket in as little three months.

Over the years several state governments have addressed the issue of mandatory implants, and four of them — California, North Dakota, Oklahoma, andWisconsin — prohibit mandatory RFID chips, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The obvious fear that comes to mind with mandatory tagging is that the information accessible through the chips could fall into the wrong hands, but proponents have answers for that.

ULA Says It Could Accommodate Additional Atlas 5 Launch Next Year United Launch Alliance, which is trying to bolster its appeal to potential launch customers, said it has at least one spot open on its 2017 manifest for an Atlas 5 launch. The announcement was part of ULA’s unveiling of a new sales program known as RapidLaunch, which would allow satellite providers

Traditionally, scheduling an Atlas 5 for medium-class missions has taken two to three years, but ULA has been building a rocket at its plant in Decatur, Alabama without a customer in hand with the hopes of attracting new business. The final customization of the rocket would take place in those final three months. “To accommodate our RapidLaunch customers, we have added additional hardware to the production line, so that we can offer additional vehicles without an impact to our existing customers,” Kent Lietzau, ULA’s vice president of business development, said. “We have also moved customization for any particular launch to the last three months of production.” Tory Bruno, the chief executive officer of United Launch Alliance, first hinted at the RapidLaunch service in April 2015. Recently, Europe’s Arianespace launch-service provider said it might be able to add a supplemental heavy-lift Ariane 5 vehicle to its 2017 manifest if market conditions demand it. Both companies’ announcements come after two other commercial providers faced setbacks. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket suffered a failure during a static fire test Sept. 1 and Russia’s Proton rocket is expected to be grounded until about mid-November following a June anomaly. No Flying Tesla? That’s Because Electric Planes Are A Steeper Challenge Than Electric Cars Thousands of electric cars are on the road, with many more set to join them over the next few years. Electric planes? Not so much. There are several small, experimental aircraft out there — NASA is building an electricity-powered plane set for a test flight next year and a two-seat Airbus electric aircraft soared over the English Channel in 2015. But don’t expect an electric jet to fly hundreds of passengers anytime soon. Battery limitations all but rule that out. “A lot of the technical advances that happen start in smaller airplanes,” said Richard Anderson, director of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s flight research center and a professor of aerospace engineering. “There will be a market that stands for smaller, fully-electric airplanes.” The concept of using electric motors to power airplane systems dates back at least toWorldWar II, when the B-29 Superfortress bomber used electric motors to power its gun turrets.

32 • Sept / Oct

2016

Since then, other airplanes have replaced the ducts and hoses of hydraulic and pneumatic systems with electrical power to control such things as stabilizers and brakes. That can save significant weight and reduce fuel burn. Using electrical power to actually propel planes, however, is a more complicated challenge. In a conventional jet airplane, the engine sucks air in through its front, a compressor squeezes it, and fuel is sprayed in and lit, creating burning gases and forward thrust. Electric plane power is much simpler — batteries power an electric motor that spins a propeller. It’s more efficient, but involves far less thrust, which is why electric planes tend to be slow. Airbus’ two-seat electric plane could only go a maximum speed of about 136 miles per hour. A solar-powered plane that completed an aroundthe-world journey this summer had an average airspeed of 47 miles per hour. The plane, called Solar Impulse 2, had more than 17,000 solar cells that powered four electric motors. The payoff, however, could be a quieter, greener way to fly. According to a recent report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, aircraft were responsible for about 8% of the greenhouse gas emitted by the U.S. transportation sector in 2014. That compares to 23% for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and 61% for light-duty vehicles. “As technology progresses, I think we’ll see big strides in improvements in noise, direct operating costs, reduction in fossil fuel burning and reduction in emissions,” Anderson said of electric aircraft research. An electric plane gets its energy from batteries, generally lithium-ion. An example of that is NASA’s X-57, an experimental plane that will test how electric propulsion technology can improve performance. A team of NASA researchers and private industry professionals is converting an Italian-designed Tecnam twin-engine plane fuselage into an all-electric plane by swapping out the original piston engines for electric motors and switching to battery power. A later iteration of the plane, if it receives funding, would have a modified wing with 14 electric motors that would turn propellers to simulate a high-lift component, which would reduce the speed that’s normally needed to take off. The conversion is taking place at Scaled Composites’ Mojave headquarters. Prime contractor Empirical Systems Aerospace is from Oceano, Calif.; Electric Power Systems of City of Industry is developing the battery system; Santa Cruz electric aviation start-up Joby Aviation is working on the cruise motors; and San Luis Obispo company Xperimental is making the wing. The efficiency of electric power enables other design advances, said Sean Clarke, principal investigator for the X-57 project at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base. For example, the

electric motors’ smaller size and weight allowed engineers to experiment with a smaller wing and multiple engines for increased lift, said Matt Redifer, chief engineer for the X-57. The biggest hurdle for these projects is battery technology, particularly a battery’s specific energy, or the amount of energy it can store for a given amount of weight. Despite improvements, planes need a lot of lithium-ion batteries to achieve significant range. In electric cars, the main problem was the cost of the batteries, which is starting to come down. In planes, the biggest challenge is weight. The jet fuel capacity of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner is about 223,000 pounds, according to an airport planning document released in December. The estimated weight of a battery pack with equivalent energy would be 4.5 million pounds, Anderson said. The X-57’s battery system alone weighs about 800 pounds — close to the weight of the plane’s fuselage. The weight of the entire aircraft is 3,000 pounds. To mitigate this, Empirical Systems Aerospace decided to put the batteries in the fuselage rather than in the wings, said Philip Osterkamp, lead integration engineer for instrumentation systems on the X-57 at Empirical Systems Aerospace. Millennials’ technology expectations have been shaped by smartphones, Facebook and digital media – in other words, by easy and ubiquitous connectivity. It’s not surprising, then, that traditional manufacturing systems can seem as retro as waiting for dial-up internet to connect. And that’s bad for the manufacturing sector, because its skills gap is looming large. A joint study by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte Consulting projects a surge of nearly 3.5 million open manufacturing jobs created over the next decade. Some of the empty slots will come by way of retiring baby boomers, while others are related to new positions created as a result of natural business growth, the report found. What the report also predicts: As conditions stand now, 2 million of those jobs will go unfulfilled. In other words, the need for the manufacturing sector to appeal to Millennials – the generation typically defined as those born between 1981 and 1997 – is both critical and a very tall order. Indeed, manufacturing still has a negative image among younger generations, experts say. In a 2015 public perception of manufacturing study, also by The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, respondents ages 19 to 33 ranked manufacturing as their lowest preference in terms of potential career choices. Manufacturing’s image problem is complex and in, some aspects, based on false assumptions. But one real obstacle is that some manufacturing systems can seem antiquated, and it’s an issue that many manufacturers and related organizations are already addressing. Modern and accessible tech

Forward-looking companies and organizations in the manufacturing sector are working to update systems so they better align with the ease and accessibility of user experience so pervasive with personal technology. Traditional manufacturing platforms – for example, manufacturing execution systems and supply chain applications – are being redesigned with new mobile interfaces, cloud capabilities and modern-day dashboards to make what has historically been perceived as arcane into something far more friendly and familiar to a tech-savvy audience. “As Millennials move into the manufacturing environment, there’s a certain expectation that the technology they are interacting with will work the same as what they grew up with,” said Matt Wells, product general manager for automation software at GE Digital. “The entire generation expects that data will be available to them anytime, anywhere, even outside of the plant. If they need access to information, they don’t want to call someone; they want to pull out their phone and see what’s going on.” One way to gain traction with Millennials is to provide access to tools they want to use, not simply those required to do their jobs, Wells said. “Millennials want to work in organizations that are reflective of

and simulation to bring manufacturing platforms into a fully digital world. The bigger issue, he said, will be how analytics and other key performance indicators are presented to users in a way that fosters investigation of data and resolution of issues once identified.

Manufacturing UX on the go

Technology that enables instant experts

Meeting Millennials’ technology expectations will be a key component in the efforts to solve the manufacturing sector’s skills gap. User experience – mobility, in particular – are table stakes for the new generation accustomed to using their phones for everything, according to Stan Przybylinski, vice president of research with CIMdata, a PLM consultancy. Modern-day manufacturing systems need to be designed with mobile access in mind, and the user interface needs to reflect the different use case, from how information and tools are organized to touchscreen support along with new search capabilities, he said.

Redesigning manufacturing software in a way that promotes “instant skills” will also be important to Millennials and other incoming generations who expect to get up and running on software with minimal to no training, according to Swapan Jha, vice president go-to-market for the internet of things (IoT) solutions group at PTC. “Whether they’re working on the manufacturing floor or as a design engineer, they want information available when they want it on wherever they want it, be it desktop or iPad,” Jha said. “They also expect to be able to turn on the solution and use it right out of the box with no training.”

“Millennials want visual UIs, with even drag and drop being anachronistic for people who spend most of their time on mobile devices,” Przybylinski said. Yet just delivering a simple mobile app doesn’t go far enough, he contends. “People tend to think of mobile apps that are simple to use, but in the end, they are simple because they don’t do much,” he says. “The problems being addressed [by manufacturing] require complex user interaction.” Przybylinski envisions new user interfaces that thematically resemble the physical shop floor, and that offer augmented reality, virtual reality

Jay Flores, STEM ambassador at Rockwell Automation, couldn’t agree more. He recently came across an internet meme that sums up Millennials’ technology expectations for professional software: “A user interface is like a joke. If you have to explain it, it’s not a good one. “People expect a lot more intuitive interaction with machines because of touchscreens and the iPhone and iPad era,” he added. “They need to be able to understand quickly what it is they need to do.” Source: Tech Target A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Your ‘Top Shop” Precision Aerospace/Defense Manufacturer

For more than 3 decades, Missoula, Montana based CM Manufacturing has been supplying parts to one of the most demanding customers in the world, the US Department of Defense. They are experts in manufacturing high-strength steel and non-ferrous parts for aircraft, particularly landing gear parts. CM Manufacturing’s parts are installed on such fixed wing aircraft as the C-17, EA-6B, B1-B, F-15, F-16, F-18,A-10, B-2, SH-60B, T-38, F-35, C2-V and the KC-135. They understand the seriousness of what can happen to a $700 million aircraft (B-2) if one of their parts should fail on takeoff or landing. Ken Johnson, President of the company, says, “Our parts must be made perfectly every time. When they are delivered to our customers, there simply can’t be a defective part, as what we manufacture is mission critical to the aircraft it will be installed on.” In fact, CM Manufacturing has been a ‘Silver’ and ‘Gold’ supplier to Boeing for the past several years, and on their last report card, they had 0 rejects on 2436 parts supplied, with a 99.5% On-Time delivery score. Nearly a decade ago, the company certified to ISO and AS9100, where today they retain these certifications. Ken says that when they first certified, CM Manufacturing was one of very few machine shops in Montana to have these certifications. The team at CM Manufacturing, with an average tenure of ~10 years, works on a daily basis with extensive non-destructive testing requirements, chrome plated, cadmium plated and painted parts, and they are accustomed to working with all the major aircraft manufacturers specifications. Ken says that key to the company’s outstanding quality and on time ratings is the superior experienced team, most who have been with the company for many years. CM Manufacturing averages 250-300 individual contracts per year with the aerospace/ defense industry, and they manufacture more than 70,000 parts per year. Their parts range in size from ¼” to 14” in diameter. Ken’s parents Richard and Collette started CM Manufacturing 32 years ago, in 1984. Richard Started CM after retiring from the Air Force as a Lt. Col and Commander of Defense Command Agency Cleveland and program Manager for Cleveland Pneumatic. Once Ken earned his bachelor’s degree in Finance, he and his father in 1996 made the decision to partner in the company Richard had founded. In 2014, Ken became the majority owner of the business. Sadly, Richard passed away 2 years ago, and Ken is blessed to have had many years of mentorship with his father at the helm. Ken says that he utilizes Modern Machine Shop’s ‘Top Shops’ to benchmark his company against others in the industry. ‘Top Shops’ is a comprehensive benchmarking program for machine shops of all types and sizes. Using data from surveys completed by a number of machining businesses, ‘Top Shop’ identifies optimal shop floor practices as well A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

as operational and business metrics that define world-class competitiveness in discrete parts manufacturing. Companies ranging from small job shops to large manufacturing operations can see how they compare against the country’s leading machining businesses, which enables them to make sound decisions to emulate those identified as top-performing operations. Not only does the benchmarking data serve as a baseline “report card” for them, but it eliminates the need for shop executives to rely on gut feelings as a method of identifying and prioritizing improvement efforts. Using their criteria, CM Manufacturing is a ‘Top Shop’. One criterion evaluates median spindle uptime – it says that 66% is the norm for ‘Top Shops’ compared to 54 percent for other surveyed shops. CM Manufacturing’s median spindle uptime exceeds 85% (it operates 2 shifts), well above the benchmark for even the best-in-class companies. Other metrics evaluated are profit margin, and quote to book ratio, to name a few, and CM Manufacturing measures favorably on these criteria. Ken says, “When you operate your business as a ‘Top Shop’, every aspect of your business must utilize these principles, and this applies to the wages you pay your superior employees so that they remain with you. At CM Manufacturing, we pay competitive wages to our team, and this is just one of the many reasons our team has a tenure of 10 years on average.” Best in class machine shops purchase the best machine tools that enable their business to keep the spindles turning. Ken says, “While we do machine aluminum parts, most often we are machining high-strength steel and non-ferrous parts (300M Steel, stainless, forgings, Inconel, copper, bronze, PH-30 and Delrin), with extensive non-destructive testing requirements, chrome plated, cadmium plated, and painted parts, and this means that we need some of the most rigid, reliable high end machine tools in the industry.” CM Manufacturing’s machine tools of choice are the Mazak line. Since 1998, every machine they have purchased is a Mazak. Ken says that when the company first started up, they purchased some entry-level machines, but given the nature of the parts they manufacture, “We needed more machine”. Today, CM Manufacturing has 5 Mazak lathes, with a machining diameter up to 16.54” and maximum machining length of 48.233”, and they have 5-axis machining capabilities with their Mazak Integrex J 400 Multi-tasking machine. In just the past year and a half, they replaced 2 of their aging Fadal machines with 2 new Mazak VCN-530C (Vertical Machining Centers) with Renishaw tool touch probing capabilities. The VCN-530C is designed to process large parts or several small work pieces in a single setup. Ken says that the new Mazak VCN-530’s offer the rigidity needed for the aerospace and defense parts his team machines. “Hands down, our Mazak VCNs offer superior speeds, feeds and accuracy, and with preventive maintenance provided by Smith Machinery, the dealer for our Mazak machines, we eliminate crashes and downtimes – a key factor in running our business as best-in-class.” Ken and his team also value the knowledgeable and service-oriented staff they get with Smith Machinery, including their Sales Engineer, Klaus Lassig, who was formerly a machine shop owner himself. Being in the somewhat remote area in Montana, superior service to keep CM Manufacturing’s machines up and running is key to their business. Klaus says, “During the sales process, I included Renishaw probes in the proposals for the two Mazak VCN530C Vertical Mills. I felt this would be a great addition and they would benefit from using the advanced capabilities of the machine. When some of their

machinists were hesitant about the probes, I offered to allow them to try the probe on one of their machines for a couple of months, with the option of us taking it back if they didn’t like it. As it turned out, before the end of the second day of training, and seeing the benefits of the probe, they said “We’re probably going to need to get the Renishaw probe on the other machine”. Since then they’ve wondered how they got by without this in the past.” Ken says that the company is seeing 25% improvement in their machining time with the Mazak VCN 530-C machines. “The biggest area for improvement in machining parts is in making them faster, thereby decreasing the single largest cost, that of labor.” He continued, “The Mazak machine tools we’ve been buying from Smith Machinery for the past years are helping us to continue to compete, particularly in times when machine shops are sacrificing margins to win business.” CM Manufacturing believes in giving back, and they want to see manufacturing continue to thrive in the United States. Ken says, “When we purchase new machinery, we donate our older machine tools to Missoula College.” Want to live in Missoula, Montana, and work for a ‘Top Shop’ in manufacturing? Nestled in the Northern Rockies of Montana, surrounded by seven wilderness areas and at the confluence of three rivers, Missoula is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. You can kayak, raft or tube through downtown or take a relaxing hike in 60,000 acres of wilderness. Missoula is known for its blue-ribbon trout fishing and spectacular natural beauty. CM Manufacturing is growing, and they are always looking for superior machinists. They are also seeking manufacturers reps to help diversify their customer base. Contact CM Manufacturing at (406) 543-4450, email them at cmma@cmman.com or visit their website at cmman.com. If you are looking for a ‘Top Shop’ to manufacture your high precision parts, you should definitely contact CM Manufacturing. Is 70 the New 65? Why Americans Are Working Longer Age 65 has long been considered the traditional retirement age, and not coincidentally is also the age of Medicare eligibility. According to recent statistics, the percentage of Americans 65 and older who are still in the labor force has risen to nearly 20%, the highest level since before Medicare was established in 1965. More than 9 million Americans aged 65 and older are working — a record number that is expected to rise in the coming decades, largely because of demographic and economic shifts. The first baby boomers have started to file for Medicare, and about 8,000 boomers will turn 65 each day until 2030. The U.S. economy is now dominated by service industries, which means there are plenty of employment opportunities that are less physically demanding. In addition, boomers enjoy better health and greater vitality than previous generations. Economic Necessity U.S. employers have largely replaced traditional pensions with retirement savings accounts such as 401(k) plans, which are funded primarily by employee contributions. Unfortunately, many workers have not saved enough money to retire comfortably. In fact, nearly half of today’s retirees depend on Social Security for more than half of their income. Considering that the average benefit for retired workers is $1,341 per month in 2016, it’s apparent that some people must work as long as they can just to cover basic living expenses.4 Retirement Reality Check It’s not only workers of little means who are delaying retirement past age 65. Americans with plenty of financial resources are making the same decision. Of course, many baby boomers continue to work because they are highly satisfied with their careers or want to stay active and socially engaged. But others are anxious about the future and worried that their savings won’t last. Many would-be retirees see an opportunity to strengthen their financial positions before they give up a regular salary and employer-provided health and retirement benefits. Health Is Wealth Improvements in modern medicine and longer life expectancies are generally welcome developments, but they also increase the odds that retirees could outlive their assets. The life expectancy for a man who turns 65 today is 5.5 years longer than it was for a man who turned 65 in 1970. A woman’s life expectancy increased by three years over the same period. The expectation of high future health-care costs is also a major concern of prospective retirees. By one estimate, a typical 65-year-old married couple might spend $259,000 to cover their out-of-pocket health-care costs in retirement.

Reasons to Work Longer A major advantage of remaining employed is that you may be able to keep contributing to workplace retirement accounts instead of taking withdrawals. You could also take advantage of catch-up contributions to retirement plans

(available to those who are age 50 and older) to help boost your savings and retirement income. The same thinking could apply to Social Security benefits, which many people may claim as soon as they stop working. Eligibility for the full Social Security retirement benefit ranges from age 66 to 67 (depending on birth year). If you delay claiming Social Security past full retirement age, your benefit would grow by about 8% each year, up to age 70. In theory, Social Security benefit calculations are actuarially neutral. In other words, if you live an “average” lifespan, you should receive the same lifetime Social Security income regardless of when you begin collecting benefits. However, if you are relatively healthy, you might consider the possibility that you and/or your spouse could live well beyond that “break-even” point. Delaying Social Security benefits is one way to help ensure thousands of dollars in additional income every year for the rest of your life. Demographic Dilemma With so many baby boomers nearing retirement age and younger generations choosing to have fewer children, some people have predicted that the aging population could result in declining labor force participation and lower economic growth. If so, it follows that the U.S. economy stands to benefit if a larger pool of skilled, educated, and experienced workers remain in the workforce longer than their predecessors. Recent studies have found that working may reduce age-related declines in cognitive function and improve overall health.Yet it wouldn’t be wise for anyone to count on the ability to work indefinitely.About half of retirees left the workforce earlier than expected in 2015, and health problems were a commonly cited reason. In a perfect world, the decision to retire would always be a matter of

House Approves Changes in Workforce Education Funding A bill intended to streamline and add flexibility to the way federal funds for apprenticeships and other workforce training programs are distributed passed the U.S. House of Representatives last month. If the bill succeeds, the amount of federal workforce funding under the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act would not significantly change: $1.13 billion in 2017, increasing incrementally to $1.21 billion by 2022. But the Perkins funding formula will. The National Manufacturers Association (NAM) supported the bill, sending a letter in its favor signed by 500 of its member companies. According to NAM, the bill “strengthens the use of industry-recognized credentials in educational programs to align with employers’ needs, putting it in harmony with the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. It also promotes work-based learning and allows funds to be used towards the purchase of needed manufacturing equipment, as well as certification exams upon completion of training.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Research Shows Annual Nationwide Events Foster Positive Perceptions of Industry October 7 marks the fifth annual Manufacturing DaySM when thousands of manufacturers will again host students, teachers, parents, job seekers and community leaders at open houses, plant tours and educational sessions to showcase modern manufacturing technology and the cool jobs available. It is a chance for students to see the diverse career options that are innovative, impactful and durable. As the old idiom goes, “Seeing is believing,” and that is the guiding principle behind Manufacturing Day. It was created in response to a dire need in America: The industry today faces a major shortage of skilled workers. An estimated two million manufacturing jobs will go unfilled over the next decade due to companies’ inability to find talent with the required skills. Several leading industry organizations determined five years ago the best way to combat this malady and reverse negative misperceptions people may have about manufacturing jobs and careers is to literally show “up close and personal” the exciting kind of work that takes place in plants across the U.S. Participation grows every year. In 2015, more than 2,600 live events were held attended by more than 225,000 students and 55,000 parents, educators, job seekers and other influentials. Impressive numbers, without a doubt. But, did “seeing” actually make these groups “believers”? Data Shows Theory Works

Research reveals the theory behind Manufacturing Day works. For the first time, participants were polled about their experience. A new Deloitte perception survey developed in collaboration with The Manufacturing Institute was distributed to the more than 2,500 manufacturing hosts to gather data from attendees. The results are dramatic: 81 percent of student respondents are more convinced manufacturing provides careers that are both interesting and rewarding 71 percent of student respondents are more likely to tell friends, family, parents or colleagues about manufacturing 93 percent of educators are more convinced manufacturing provides careers that are interesting and rewarding 90 percent of educators indicated they are more likely to encourage students to pursue a career in manufacturing “These findings significantly reinforce the value of Manufacturing Day,” according to Michelle Drew Rodriguez, manufacturing leader, Center for Industry Insights, at Deloitte. “For those truly exposed to modern day manufacturing, perceptions do change and, based on that, we will move the needle to better fill the skills gap that challenges so many companies today.” Drew Rodriguez explained that as a professional services firm, Deloitte talks to senior level executives every day and for them finding top talent is a top-of-mind, critical issue. It’s one reason why Deloitte has partnered with The Manufacturing Institute for a number of years to help tackle the problem.

Please RSVP to Maddie Dahl, NUNTMA Chapter Executive, Ph: 801.337.7097, Email: chapterexec@nuntma.org Skills Gap Studies Offer Insights One of those joint initiatives is Deloitte’s Skills Gap studies. The current report highlights the impact of the skills gap and offers recommendations on how to help remedy it, which provides further credence to the benefits gained from Manufacturing Day programs. For example, 82 percent of executives responding to the Skills Gap survey indicate they believe the gap will impact their ability to meet customer demand. More than three-quarters (78 percent) believe it will impact their ability to implement new technologies and increase productivity. Large numbers also report the lack of skilled workers hurts the ability to provide effective customer service (cited by 69 percent) and decreases the ability to innovate and develop new products (62 percent). The Skills Gap study also addresses the industry perception problem. Citing the Public Perception of Manufacturing research The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte conducted over the years, the report notes that “while Americans consider manufacturing among one of the most important domestic industries for maintaining a strong national economy, they rank it low as a career choice for themselves.” The study continues to say,

“Moreover, only 37 percent of respondents indicated they would encourage their children to pursue a manufacturing career.” Yet, here’s the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. According to the report, “Interestingly, those with high industry familiarity tend to have more favorable perceptions, and they are twice as likely (emphasis added) as those with no familiarity to encourage their children to pursue a manufacturing career.” This data aligns with a study done in collaboration with Skills USA, Educational Research of America, and The Manufacturing Institute, which found that 64 percent of students identified personal experiences as having the greatest influence over their career decisions. Engagement is Essential One conclusion the Public Perception report makes is “manufacturers need to engage people through community, educational and government programs in order to improve the perception of the U.S. manufacturing industry.” That statement captures the mission of Manufacturing Day. And, as the results of the survey of participants strongly demonstrate, changing perceptions through this initiative has become a tangible measurement. When these findings were first announced, Carroll Thomas, director of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, said, “It is powerful to see that our collective efforts are making a difference in educating the public about manufacturing and its rewarding careers, and how manufacturers are connecting with the next generation workforce.” For students participating in Manufacturing Day, seeing really is believing – believing that their futures can be bright with a career in manufacturing. Metro Denver’s Advanced Industries Show Strong Growth Tech jobs in data processing, hosting and related services saw the highest percentage of growth in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood area, according to a comprehensive report released last month by the Brookings Institute. The report looked in-depth at trends in America’s advanced industries from 2013 to 2015.Advanced industries, as defined in the report, are those that conduct extensive research & development (R&D) and that employ a disproportionately level of high-tech, highly-skilled workers. Architectural, engineering and related service made up 19.8 percent of advanced industry jobs in metro Denver in 2015. “With manufacturing exports depressed by a global economic slowdown and a strong dollar and a world oil and gas glut depressing the energy sector, a digital and technology services boom took center stage as the main engine of advanced industries’ growth,” the report says. Nationally, it found the U.S. is heavily reliant on just seven industries — three in advanced auto manufacturing and four in high-tech digital services. The seven industries are: Motor vehicle parts. Motor vehicles. Motor vehicle body & trailers. Computer systems design. Web search and internet publishings . Software products Data processing and hosting. There were a total of 146,826 advanced industry jobs in metro Denver, with those jobs accounting for 10.4 percent of all jobs in 2015. That’s a growth of 4.3 percent during the 2013-2015 time period. The five industries with the highest percentage of growth were: Data processing, hosting & related services, 8.2 percent growth, 4.7 percent of advanced industry jobs in 2015. Management, scientific and technical consulting services, 7.3 percent growth, 12 percent of advanced industry jobs in 2015. Computer systems design and related services, 6.2 percent growth, 21.1 percent of advanced industry jobs in 2015. Oil and gas extraction, 4.7 percent growth, 5 percent of advanced industry jobs in 2015. (That figure is despite the major oil and gas downturn in the last two years). Oshkosh Unveils 30mm Chaingun JLTV For Army Recon After a summer of speculation and anticipation, truck maker Oshkosh is rolling out the much-awaited upgunned variant of its Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, meant to scout ahead of Army infantry. While Oshkosh didn’t confirm or deny they were going for the Army’s Light Reconnaissance Vehicle requirement with this upgrade, it’s an extremely open secret. Adding a 30 mm chaingun to JLTV — much bigger than the normal 12.7 mm machinegun — fixes the biggest shortfall the vehicle had for the LRV mission.

The Army and Marines have long planned to purchase over 50,000 JLTVs to replace vulnerable Humvees and cumbersome and often road-bound MRAPs. Originally, though, they were just going to be armed with .50 caliber (12.7 mm) heavy machineguns, 7.62 mm light machineguns, grenade launchers, and maybe anti-tank missiles, basically the same mix as the Humvee. Fitting a 30mm chaingun — normally used on Apache attack helicopters — onto a relatively small truck is a big deal. The extra range and firepower allows commanders to employ the vehicle much more aggressively — for example, as a forward scout moving out fast and well ahead of the main force. Originally, the Army planned to buy a new vehicle for the LRV requirement. The

service looked at a range of lightweight, lightly armored trucks, including armed versions of its Ground Mobility Vehicle troop transport. (GMV was called the Ultra-Light Combat Vehicle until the Army renamed it — confusingly, because the term Ground Mobility Vehicle is also used for a different Special Operations truck). But budget considerations, as usual, cramped the Army’s style. So the service decided to use the already-in-production Joint Light Tactical Vehicle instead and just make JLTV meet the LRV specs as well as possible — most importantly, by adding the 30 mm gun. There are still some tradeoffs. The JLTV is heavier than the purpose-built LRV would have been, so it can’t be air-dropped onto the battlefield. That’s a big deal for the 82nd Airborne Division, but not for the vast majority of the Army. On the upside, the heavier JLTV is better protected, particularly because it’s designed from the tires up to survive roadside bombs. The JLTV is also more cramped, with room for one less scout trooper than the original LRV requirement, but the Army has said it can work around that. Oshkosh is releasing its first photos of a JLTV equipped with a 30 mm cannon and will be showing off the vehicle at the Baltimore convention of the powerful National Guard Association of the United States, where Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley and other defense leaders are scheduled to speak. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Vestas reported a record volume of global orders in 2015, a year in which U.S. and Canada sales surged to $3.5 billion from $270 million in 2012. And it looks like there’s a lot more in the pipeline for Vestas. In April, the company joined Xcel Energy in announcing plans to build a 300-turbine, 600-megawatt wind farm in Colorado that is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. Then in June came word that Vestas would supply 1,000 wind turbines to MidAmerican Energy, the Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary, for a proposed 2,000-megawatt wind farm in Iowa.

A new federal report confirms what might have been apparent already: Vestas Wind Systems is on a roll in the United States.

That deal covers supplying and commissioning the wind turbines, with a five-year service agreement that could go out to 10 years.

The Danish wind-turbine manufacturing company, which supplies the U.S. market from four factories in Colorado, accounted for 2,870 of the 8,598 megawatts of wind power installed in the United States last year, according to the Department of Energy’s “2015 Wind Technologies Market Report,” released last month.
