e just got word that the canal is passable. That’s the good news.” The young Naval officer sweeps into the small room, fresh off the early morning phone call that sets the delivery in motion.

Eight men have been waiting for this information. As they waited, each remained dressed to face the cold nor’easter spinning off the coast. They knew they would be leaving this morning. They had simply been waiting to

learn if the first leg of their journey from Eastport to New York was south around Cape Charles or north, through the C&D Canal. The officer continues as the men solemnly shoulder their gear bags and move to the

door. “The bad news is that the storm is moving slowly. And the Russians are getting anxious.” The war has a way of bringing together diverse groups of people and putting them in unusual situations. This
