Sotogrande is the largest privately owned residential development in Andalusia. It is composed of a 20 km2 stretch of land from the Mediterranean Sea into the hills of Sierra Almenara, providing contrasting views and beautiful landscapes. Sotogrande was masterminded in 1962 by philanthropist Joseph Rafael McMicking. He wanted to create a community where people from all over the world could thrive and pursue an active, healthy lifestyle embracing the unique opportunities of Sotogrande’s special coastal location.
Sotogrande is divided into zones which make it easy to find your way around from the port all the way to La Reserva. SOTOGRANDE COSTA: Kings and Queens: Found in the lower part of Sotogrande, known as the Kings and Queens, where all the streets are named after Spanish kings and queens, A and B Zones: are also found on the Costa side and they consist of beautiful tree-lined streets and stunning villas in all different price ranges. In this area, all street names start with either A or B respectively. Sotogrande Alto: Crossing the freeway are the C and D zones then up to the F-zone and ending the at Almenra Hotel the G-zone Above the N340 is the geographically larger part of Sotogrande, featuring rolling hills, wooded areas and villas with incredible sea, golf and country views. This area also has some incredible apartments to offer, some breathtaking penthouses and waterfront townhouses along the river. Sotogrande is truly a one of a kind experience, unique in its location and amenities it has to offer. Yet it has something for everyone whether your passion is polo, sailing, golf, or just lounging on one of the fabulous beaches. The Village: Nestled between the lower and upper parts of Sotogrande we find a charming little Spanish town called Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro, affectionately known by locals as the “Pueblo” or “Village”. This is also where we find a number of supermarkets, including Supercor, which is the gourmet market of Corte Ingles. There is also a Mercadona, a Lidl and there’s even an Iceland Overseas where English customers can find all their favourite foods from back home. In addition, there are mechanics, hair dressers, beauty salons, dentists, lawyers, language schools, real estate offices, lawyers, flower shops, vets, gyms, pharmacies, wine shops, furniture shops, clothing shops, hardware shops, etc. For some delicious cakes and afternoon tea, we’d highly recommend Pane & Cioccolato or Okay for some fresh bread and a great breakfast.

THE BEACH
- SOTOGRANDE’S HAS 4 STUNNING BEACHES... PLAYA GUADALQUITON: A 5km beach in front of a private estate between Sotogrande and Alcaidesa. This beach is very isolated and one of the quietest in Andalucia. Its name comes from the small river that crosses the beach. The estate boasts the last cork-oak trees (alcornoques) which grow adjacent to the Mediterranean sea in Europe. Access on foot is from the Playa Torrecarboneria to the west and Playa Sotogrande to the east.
PLAYA SOTOGRANDE: The
beach that fronts the estate and is 2km long, situated close to the Guadiaro river estuary and natural protected area. The only car access is by the road that runs to the beach from Paseo del Parque to the west of the urbanization (36.27284,-5.283608). Parking is difficult on summer weekends. The Sotogrande Beach Club fronts the beach -(you can get day membership). Pedestrian access is possible from the urbanization. To the west is Playa Guadalquiton, while the East end is backed by the River Guadiaro estuary protected wetlands. The river can be crossed in summer at the beach or via the road bridge 200m inland. An older name of this beach is Borondo.
PLAYA PASEO DEL MAR: A small beach, 1km long, between the mouth of the Sotogrande marina and the Guadairo river. Triangular shaped, it is reasonably popular in the summer. This beach fronts the Paseo del Mar section of the urbanizations and the Octagon Beach Club, where day membership is available. Parking is difficult here in the summer. Facilities include a shower, toilets and lifeguard huts, a chiringuito and watersports centre. (36.288235,-5.274146) In the summer a free service water taxi takes visitors to the beach from the other side of the marina opposite Ke bar. Operating hours summer 11.30 to 15.00 and 16.00 to 19.00 Mon to Sat.
TORREGUADIARO BEACH: This semi-urban beach lies between the village of Torreguadiaro and Sotogrande port to the East. It is about 1.3km long and gets quite busy - parking is limited in the Marina. The best car access is from the old N-340a West of the village at km134, with a tarmac car park (36.297712,-5.271978) near the 16th-century watchtower (Torre Vigias). The chiringuito, sunbeds, showers and lifeguard posts are towards the village end of the beach. There is also access to the west end from the Sotogrande port, with steps over the retaining wall. This beach is also known as Playa de las Conchas SMALL COVE: To the east of Torreguadiaro, near the Milas de Plata Hotel,
is a small cove which cannot be seen from the road. Some parking is available by the Hotel Milla de Plata (36.306013,-5.262344) and a steep path leads down to the cove. This beach is surprisingly quiet even in the summer, and has no facilities, although the trees behind the beach offer shade. On the headland above (East side) the beach are some ruins of a Guardia Civil barracks.

& 8 AMAZING BEACH BAR (CHIRINGUITOS) In Spanish - Chiringuito translates to open air restaurant which is exactly what there are! These summer restaurant/ bars open June to September . After which they are packed away for another year. The specialise in fresh fish, usually that day´s catch cooked on a BBQ made in an old fishing boat. AN EXQUISITE EVENTS VENUE CORTIJO LOS CANOS - SOTOGANDE Over 2000 years ago the Romans were fighting the Carthaginians and rebellious Spanish. One of the settlements was called Barbesula, now called Sotogrande on the River Guadiaro. Historians believe that Romans were drinking clean fresh water from the well that is still in Cortijo Los Canos. The two carved inscriptions on the portal to the Cortijo were originally part of the main gateway to Barbesula 2000 years ago. The finest example of a restored Spanish Cortijo between Cadiz and Malaga. San Roque first opened it´s doors in 1991 and quickly became the golf resort of choice in Sotogrande, designed by Dave Thomas the Old Course along with Valderrama and Real Club de Sotogrande became known as the golden triangle of golf. In 1997, during the Ryder Cup held in neighbouring Valderrama, San Roque hosted both the European and American teams and their families and to this day the plaques with the players´ names remain by the door to the suites they occupied. The first event under the club´s belt was the European Tour Qualifying School Finals in 1993, Ryder Cup 1997, held exclusively on the Old Course until 2003. Many players who have since become household names received their tour card at San Roque such as Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose to name a few. “See you in November in San Roque” became a catch phrase for those in the business as the Q School finals were held for a further 13 years at the club with the exception of 3 years in between where the finals were held in Catalunya. In 2003, San Roque opened a further 18 holes and so the New Course was born. The course designed by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros is a perfect contrast to the Old as it is extremely different in design, yet presents the same challenges as its older sister. In 2005 the Old Course hosted the Spanish Open which was eventually won by Peter Hanson after a play off with fellow Swede Peter Gustafsson. The tournament returned in 2006, this time on the New Course with Niclas Fasth winning. It is fair to say that The San Roque Club holds a place in the heart of many a European Tour professional. The club continues to welcome elite players from across the globe who come to take advantage of the outstanding conditions before important tournaments. As for amateurs, the two courses offer some of the most beautiful holes they will ever play. It´s not only professionals who enjoy San Roque as thousands of amateurs will testify each year. Although Sotogrande has polo throughout the year, summer is really the season when the teams from all over the world arrive in Sotogrande to compete in the various Polo tournaments. Have a wonderful summer of Polo which is open to the public and most games have free entry.
SANTA MARIA POLO:
As every year, the international Polo tournament is once again the essential summer event in Sotogrande and the Costa del Sol. Organized by the Santa María Polo Club in its extensive facilities of the Pines and Iron bridge, this tournament brings to Spain the best Polo players in the world, who will compete from July 25 to September 1 to achieve the victory of their teams. This event, which brings together thousands of visitors, is part of the Grand Slam of the world pole, next to the US open in Palm Beach, the British Open and Palermo, in Argentina. The nine fields of Santa María Polo Club are located in three different places: Los Pinos, Río Sotogrande and Puente de Hierro. Santa María Polo Club also has facilities for events located in different playing areas. For this reason the Club has the infrastructure and the resources necessary to provide an integral service that is adaptable to all needs in a unique location for the organization of private and corporative events and celebrations. Los Pinos fields are our main fields and the venue of the International Polo Tournament and the Spring Polo Season. With its special preparation and care the fields are ready to host an intense polo calendar in any adverse weather conditions. Rio Sotogrande fields receive the Medium Goal level in the International Polo Tournament among others in the fall, spring and summer polo seasons. Puente de Hierro fields I and II are usually reserved for the low goal International Polo Tournament and other tournaments of this level in winter and spring. The field 3 is used for practice.

OUT AND ABOUT WALKING AROUND "FINCA LA ALCAIDESA" is a country estate, property of the Junta de Andalucía is one of the area best kept secrets, bordering the Northeast of Pinar del Rey. It is an unique area close to Sotogrande, the Los Alcornocales Natural Park and Gibraltar. In the park which there are fantastic accommodations and a wealth of ecotourism activities. Take a walk in the unspoilt natural environment with its tremendous diversity of flora and fauna. PINAR DEL REY -SAN ROQUE Pinar del Rey is a suburban park spanning 338 hectares at the heart of the local region. This unique forest paradise has an intriguing story that began in 1800 when the Spanish Navy planted trees to supply timber for warships. Today, Pinar del Rey and the Alcornocales Natural Park are the natural lungs of the Campo de Gibraltar area.

The Forge is a wonderful country restaurant that has been beautifully converted from a 200 year old house, set in the foothills of Casares with stunning sea views and just a short drive from the coast and the town of Estepona. The owners, Mike and Athene Forge, have been running restaurants on the Costa del Sol for over 30 years. In 1994 they moved inland and opened Finca el Forjador in the countryside of Casares. The beginning of El Estrecho Rugby Club can be traced back to 2010 when a group of friends, who were rugby fans, decided to establish the club with the objective of promoting rugby as a sport within the county Campo de Gibraltar, creating a rugby academy and joining the Federation of Rugby Leagues in all its categories.

After the foundation took place and in its first season, the club joined the Federated League of Andalucía with a senior team and an under-14 team. In its second season, 2010-2011, the club already had 70 registered players. Soon enough, good results were achieved as the senior rugby team reached the play-offs in the 2010- 2011,20112012,2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons. Thanks to the development of our sports project, the club has managed to affiliate 8 junior teams formed of players aged 4 to 18. We are currently the third club in Andalucía with the biggest number of licenses in junior leagues, and we have around 250 federated players in total.
