Pick Up this Series! By Danielle Feigenbaum

I laughed my ass off reading The Chocolate Lover’s Series by Tara Sivec. I may have even peed my pants a little reading them: Seduction and Snacks, Futures and Frostings and Troubles and Treats are three of the funniest books I have ever read. The perfect books to read this Valentines Day - they are all about chocolate and sex. You will not believe the things that come out of these character’s mouths, beyond hysterical. If you are reading the books in public, be prepared to get some strange looks since you will be snorting loudly. If you have a kindle you can download them at Amazon for $2.99 - $3.99 or get the books for $10.99 - $12.99, it’s worth every penny and then some. Enjoy! ■

How to Stop Slamming Doors A look at the love-hate relationship of tween discipline.

We have a rule in our house.

No slamming doors. Now try enforcing that with your full-fledged, hormonal tween daughter. My daughter, almost 13, can definitely be, shall we say, “dramatic.” Even keeled most of the time, it’s that last 10% that leaves me scratching my head. Especially when seemingly neutral conversations suddenly spiral into a quick turn on her heel, the STOMP, STOMP, STOMP up to her room, finally punctuated by a house-shaking door slam. The yelling and the stomping, I can take. The door slamming? No.

By Elissa Freeman

My husband and I laid down the law: slamming the door will result in its instantaneous removal. Over the course of one year, the slamming stopped. Until a few weeks ago. I’ll admit conditions were not great. We were just back from a wonderful week’s long vacation. We were all tired and cranky. A small tiff exploded out of nowhere and then… STOMP, STOMP, STOMP…SLAM! Not once, but twice. For effect, naturally. My husband and I looked at one another. Uh oh. “Go.” I said simply. “Do I have to?” he asked wearily. “Yes. You know what the experts say. Follow through.” With a heavy sigh he retrieved the hammer and screwdriver. As he went upstairs, I wondered if the door would actually come off, seeing as the hinges were painted over. After a tap, tap, tap, the deed was done. The door was off. I think we were all in shock. At first, my daughter found it quite amusing, even posting it on her facebook page with the caption: “Bye, bye door. Good work mom and dad.” Of course, I reposted it to the amusement of many friends who shared similar stories. After about two weeks, and threats of moving into her bathroom, we put the door back on. A wise friend once said: “adolescence is a disease that must run its course.” You’re telling me. ■

Sweets to Spice Up Your Life By Fifty Two Shades of Blue-ish author Karen S. Exkorn

Most women love Valentine’s Day because it’s all about love…and candy! We also tend to do one of two things with candy. A) Scarf it down while watching late night TV or B) Hide it away and nibble on it sparingly for the next six months. Why not try something new this year by using candy to spice up your sex life? Try these five ideas to help get you in the mood:

© WWW.ISTOCK.COM/ EYEWAVE

Hershey’s Kiss

York Peppermint Pattie

With your eyes closed, place a chocolate kiss in your mouth. Focus on the feeling of the smooth chocolate on your tongue. Slowly chew and swallow, enjoying all of the sensations and experience a sense of “mindfulness” which forces you to be“ in the moment” and is especially helpful in the bedroom!

This peppermint chocolate aphrodisiac has a powerful stimulant that enhances sexual pleasure. The cool scent has a warming effect on the blood, making it easier to experience sexual arousal. Inhaling the scent of peppermint can lead to erotic dreams among women.

Black Licorice Whips

Chocolove Bars

Chewing on bits of licorice root enhances the libido! Enjoy tasting and smelling your Black Licorice Whip (what you choose to do with the “whip” is a whole different story).

Experience the amorous effects of chocolate plus a dose of prose every chocolate bar comes with a poem inside. Plus, the antioxidants in the dark chocolate bars are great for promoting physical vitality and sexual vigor. ■

Candy Necklace There probably isn’t any scientific research behind why this sugary confection is an aphrodisiac, but if your lover nibbles at your necklace, that’s always a prelude to a romantic evening!

KIDDICTIONARY WORD:

(uh-MEW-sluss) adj : When a child has a thousand games, shelves filled with books, crayons, paints, crafts and toys yet there is “nothing to do.”

Love Thy Self

here are all sorts of people in this world with all sorts of needs. There are men who like women, men who like men, women who like women, women who like men and women, and women who like women and men, women who like women that look very much like men, and men who like men who look like women. But despite this abundance of relationship options, there is a growing faction of people who find themselves at various junctures in their life where they are compatible with NO ONE. And for many of them, the only option is to enter into a relationship with their own self Might seem odd, but for many it just makes sense. You know yourself. You’re used to your quirks. You never have to wonder what the other person’s thinking, because you know. You keep the same hours, you share a long history, you know the same people. You can even share clothes. And in this arrangement more than any other, you and your partner can live as cheaply as one. However, what about when it doesn’t work out? Breaking up with yourself is a painful and complex process. But when you and yourself can’t come to agreeable terms, and you’ve tried every available avenue to no avail, there’s nothing left to do, but end it and move on. When you break up with yourself you should let yourself down easy. Say something like, “It’s not me, it’s me!” Because in all likelihood you still care about yourself, but you’re just not right for each other. And you don’t want you to leave with a damaged self esteem. Reassure you that you and yourself can still be friends. In most instances it won’t be easy right away. When the break up is still fresh and emotions are still high it’s probably best not to see yourself for awhile. Certainly you should not succumb to temptation in this emotionally charged time if you receive a late-night booty call for yourself. You will certainly be tempted to go screw yourself. But be strong. Just remember the good times and accept that you gave the relationship your all, but it’s over. Give it time. You’ll get over yourself. ■

places we l❤ ve PHILADELPHIA By Samantha Feuss, Have Sippy Will Travel

Whether you have a day, weekend, or an entire week, you’ll run out of time long before running out of ways to spend a visit to Philadelphia - a city rife with some of our nation’s richest historical sites, museums, sculptures, gardens and more. Start your adventure with a tour of Independence Hall where George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army, the Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation were adopted, and the U. S. Constitution was drafted. Tours are free and a timed ticket is needed for entrance. Within walking distance, you’ll find the National Museum of American Jewish History, the African American Museum in Philadelphia and the Betsy Ross House. Next, explore the city’s magnificent artwork on a very uncommon canvas. What began as a way to reduce the city’s graffiti epidemic, an artist was hired to guide inner city youth to help beautify their community. Now, the Mural Arts Program is one of the largest of its kind, with more then 3,500 works created in 27 years and approximately 100 indoor and outdoor murals constructed each year. View the murals while biking, walking, or take a guided trolly tour of the city. All that touring is bound to make you hungry so why not indulge in one of the city’s namesake dishes, the Philly cheesesteak? Head to Pat’s King Of Steaks (www.patskingosteaks.com) or Geno’s Steaks (www.genosteaks.com) where these two rivals square off every day. While Pat’s owners invented the famed sandwich, Geno’s claims to do it better. Be warned - order fast, know what you want, 32

BETWEEN US By Kimberly Coleman

Mother - Daughter Abroad Two months ago, I experienced one of the best trips of my life when I spent four days and three nights in Paris, France with my mom. Mother/daughter getaways to Paris can be amazing… Especially if you keep the following tips in mind: ● Flexible travel schedule (especially if she’s retired)

● Consider mom when making your itinerary

As my mom said, “I don’t have any kids at home. Let me know what works best for you.” As a result, she was able to come up from Virginia so we could both leave for Paris from New York. The trip that was taking me more than a year to schedule with my husband came together within a few months, when we made the decision to make my mom as my traveling partner instead.

In my Paris “dream,” I imagined walking and biking through Paris. However, my mom can’t walk too long for extended periods of time due to medical reasons. As such, I figured out the Paris metro system so we would be able to stop within short distances of all the popular Paris attractions that we wanted to experience. We also both came up with our “must do” lists so we could experience things that were most important to each of us.

● Build some “unscheduled” time into your plan

● Value this one-onone time

I have had many While we primarily special moments visited the cultural and memories with attractions of Paris, my mom over my some of my best lifetime. It exceeded memories were the my expectations. We unplanned ones. A long, laughed together. We leisurely outdoor dinner just enjoyed Paris with at La Fregate (www. one another. Je suis lefregateparis.com) reconnaissant. (I am was one such treat. We grateful.) happened to discover this restaurant gem on our way back from one To read more about our Paris adventures, click of the museums. here. ■

us your questions Got a question for Andrew? Send are in desperate to beth@rolemommy.com if you ! need of an organizing overhaul

Get Organized!

Q + A with organization guru Andrew Mellen

Q: A:

Dear Andrew, I am getting so stressed out about filing my taxes. I have all these receipts and no idea which ones I need to save and which ones I can finally throw out. Please help me de-clutter my finances in time for tax day! Sincerely, Drowning in Paper, New Rochelle, NY

I feel your pain. As a rule, there are only six (6) kinds of receipts that you need to keep -- but please consult with your tax professional before you discard anything.

● Capital improvements to a piece of real estate you own. These may be added to your cost basis when selling to reduce any taxable profit you may show. ● Major purchases, such as appliances, equipment, etc. If you ever want to call the manufacturer for technical support, go online within the first 30 days of ownership and register your purchase. They may demand proof of purchase when you first call in and if you haven’t registered, you may need to fax or email them your receipt at that time. ● Service and repairs to either your home or vehicle. A full record of service performed will put you in a better position to negotiate if you can show the care with which you’ve maintained these assets while in your possession. 36

l

A Role Mommy Magazine l Love Yourself 2013

● Tax-deductible expenses. These are expenses that will be reflected on your tax return, either on a Schedule C or other form. ● Reimbursable expenses. These are purchases that you made on behalf of someone else or are otherwise entitled to submit to an employer, client or friend to recapture your expenses. ● Items you are not yet committed to keeping and may return to the store. After the window has closed for these purchases to BE returned, unless the item also falls under one of the above categories, shred it—because you now own the item. ■ Andrew Mellen is a professional organizer and #1 best-selling author of Unstuff Your Life! (Penguin, 2010). Frequently called, “The Most Organized Man in America,” he leads workshops nationwide with clients ranging from Fortune 500 CEOs and the U.S. Dept. of Education to overwhelmed parents everywhere.

Why did you decide to create the book, Seductive Tables for Two?

Getting to Know...

Moll Anderson Just in time for Valentine’s Day, author Moll Anderson shares insider tips from her new book, Seductive Tables for Two. by Danielle Feigenbaum

I decided several years ago at the age of 45 that when I found my perfect mate and was finally in a happy, healthy and very romantic relationship that I wanted everyone to experience what that’s all about. I knew that I needed to share my secrets! My past, my choices in life and all that I went through has brought me to a place of gratefulness and a belief that I went through it all so that I could help other people. People get bound and stuck in the past and I was for many years, but then I heard a great saying by Gary Zukav. Gary said “ Give up the belief that the past could be any different than it was.” It blew my mind and it was totally freeing for me and was a statement that catapulted me to let go of my hurt, take responsibility for my own happiness’ an simply LIVE! My relationships that did not work were part of my journey of growth, love and forgiveness. Believe it or not forgiving others was simple, forgiving myself was the part that got freed with Gary’s statement. So I decided to start writing and my first book was Change Your Home Change Your Life it was a peek into my life and the brand I was about to build. For The Seductive Home and the new book Seductive Tables For Two I knew that I needed to start in a way that could speak to our cry for romance in our relationships. I haven’t told my whole story yet and I will someday, but in the meantime I want to inspire people to live in the moment and experience true romance. projectyou

Is your husband spoiled by the amazing food and embracing that. It’s a journey still! displays, or does he still appreciate it? The photographs in the book are stunning; do I sure hope my husband Charlie feels spoiled! I can tell you that he truly appreciates everything that I do for him you need to be creative to replicate these looks? and I in turn appreciate everything that he does for me. It’s mutual admiration and a beautiful case for being “Of Like Mind” in a relationship. We both have had relationships that did not work. For Charlie, his ex-wife, who I adore by the way, is a beautiful, warm and wonderful human being. They were just really different people and they absolutely had to meet, marry and create three beautiful, now grown children. I am grateful too for my beautiful son Michael and all the relationships that brought me to this place in life. I have so much fun and find such pleasure in creating food and doing little things for my husband like meeting at the door with a drink in my hand. Oh, and by the way, I have my own company, travel and a very busy schedule and this book helps women and men realize that it doesn’t take a lot of time to show someone that you care and that they are special. The idea is to just do what you are able to do.

What’s your secret to staying healthy, but enjoying yourself? Well, I wish that I had it all under control so I could write the perfect “Seductive Dieting” lifestyle book! Ha ha. I believe in moderation; it’s key to anything in life, except romance. I struggle with loving to work out! I keep saying it and waiting to really feel it. Truth is that after I’m finished on the treadmill, I do love the feeling so I’m 38

l

A Role Mommy Magazine l Love Yourself 2013

I want people to inspired by the photographs and to create their version of these ideas. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune. I what you to use what you have: your grandmothers china mixed with a couple new plates you love or things you find at a flea market or your favorite store. I also tell people to go on scavenger hunts in their own homes. You can’t believe how differently things look when you are trying to find something that works even at the last minute. I get my greatest inspiration when I’m doing a table at the last minute because I’m not over thinking and I’m just going for it. I use scarves and remnants of fabric for tablecloths, rocks glasses for vases, shot glasses for votive’s, leaves from my yard and fruit from the kitchen. The sky is the limit because it’s your table, your interlude and your knowledge of your partner that makes it perfect.

What is the one most important thing to remember when setting a romantic table? That anytime you create a “Seductive Table For Two” that you create it from your heart for that special someone you love! So that makes it at that moment THE most important table you will ever create in your life! We don’t know how much time we have on this earth, we never know when it will be the last time we ever see each other and we need to be kind, loving, forgiving and seductive always to the one you love. ■

Set the Mood

BETWEEN US

By Elizabeth Mascali and Dawn Sandomeno

The gals at PartyBlu Prints, Inc. used Moll Anderson’s book Seductive Tables For Two as their inspiration and guide to getting it right. See how they transformed her tips and ideas (using mostly items from our home) into a romantic rendezvous right under their own roof. Once you have created your table for two, it’s easy to make a monthly reservation to celebrate each other!

PartyBluPrintsBlog.com

Flowers We selected roses and tulips in two different shades of purple from our local flower shop to add a special touch and pop of color to the table. We loved pairing the passion-filled and beautiful rose and the fun and flirty tulip to symbolize two different sides of every romance. Lighting We incorporated candlelight by constructing our own candlesticks using mirrored candlesticks as the base and topping with opalescent globe votives. Nothing sets a mood like candlelight, so dim or turn off the lights and ignite those flames. Color We purchased this bright & sexy blue table at a discount store for just $99 and made it the center of attention. Fabric We layered black & ivory and blue pillows, a black table runner (it’s a pashmina), shimmery silver cloth napkins and a white fur area rug to incorporate layers of fabric in the space. Music Music is essential to the mood of any party – especially a party for two. Compile a music mix of your loved ones’ favorite songs – make sure to include some songs containing your love letter “messaging” in the lyrics. Present the love letter CD as a gift and enjoy listening to it all night long. Later, upload it to your tech and relive the romance every time you listen to it. ■
