FCE Players Dedicate Time and Knowledge for a good cause FC Edmonton players will hang up their cleats for an afternoon and will pick up whistles and act as referees as 60 young soccer players from Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School in Edmonton’s inner city and St. Albert’s U12 (boys and girls age 10/11) Impact Soccer program will participate in a fun Mini Nations Soccer Tournament

on Friday, June 7th at Clarke Stadium. Players will represent 10 countries in a series of fun scrimmages to promote community awareness, sportsmanship and the spirit of giving. “This is just another opportunity for FC Edmonton to connect with Edmonton’s ever-growing soccer community,”

said assistant coach Jeff Paulus. “We’re already refereeing for Tim Adam’s Free Footie program so we’re very familiar with the kids from Mother Teresa and the lads are really looking forward to helping out with the Mini Nations Soccer Tournament.” “On a personal note…go France!” he added.

Donations will be collected for Mother Teresa School’s clothing and food banks as well as donations of soccer equipment for the Free Footie Soccer League. This is an initiative of “The Giving Tree” Donation Drive – put on by Richard S. Fowler Catholic Junior High School in St. Albert.

A4 Eddies Earn Second Win at home versus Atlanta Silverbacks

Photo Credit: Tony Lewis Edmonton, Alberta (May 12, 2013) – The stadium was ready and so were the 1,161 fans, it just looked like it took the home team a few minutes to get into the game against the Atlanta Silverbacks Sunday at Clarke Stadium. Within the first five minutes it was the ‘Backs who came on strong. Striker Pedro Mendes managed a header from close range but directed it wide of the near post. Atlanta kept coming and in the 13th minute, they had another great chance when a low cross came through the box in front of Lance Parker but no Silverbacks player was able to get a boot on it. In the 23rd minute, it was the Eddies turn to take over the game. Michael Cox was chasing down a through ball but before he could get there, Atlanta ‘keeper Joe Nasco handled the ball outside of the area and was shown a straight Red. Lance Laing stepped up to take the free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and hit a blistering left-footed shot that struck the bar. The Eddies kept up the pressure and it was Daryl Fordyce with the next good opportunity. The striker managed to get a quality shot off through the Atlanta defender but substitute ‘keeper Eric Ati made an athletic save to keep it even. Fordyce got a second opportunity in the 41st and this time buried the Lance Laing ball with a diving header to make it 1-0 for the home side. And they weren’t done there. Another mistake by an Atlanta ‘keeper allowed

Cox to get on the end of a bouncing ball and the striker made no mistake, firing it into the empty net, making it 2-0 going into the half. “We played like it was Christmas and not Mother’s Day,” said Atlanta coach Brian Haynes. “We were giving away gifts out there.” “It took us until the 31st minute before we got a shot on target and I’m not happy,” FCE coach Colin Miller said at halftime. “We’ve improved in the last 10 minutes but even at 10 men there are still some Atlanta players who are free and are getting the ball at times. I want to get a good result here and move up the league and I want the players to learn to be absolutely ruthless here.” With visions of second place dancing through their minds, the Eddies came out strong. It took five minutes for Robert Garrett to run up the left side and cross a ball into Cox who chested the ball expertly and bicycled it over Ati for a 3-0 lead, Cox’s second of the game. Massimo Mirabelli came on for Shaun Saiko and nearly increased the FC Edmonton lead right away but his close range shot just missed the top of the net. In the 79th minute, it was Parker’s turn. The Eddies’ ‘keeper made two point blank saves within 15 seconds to keep the lead at three and the home team hung on for the win, moving them into fourth going into the bye week. Next up for FC Edmonton is a home game on May 26 versus the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

Ten-men Eddies allow a goal on second penalty of the game and lose 1-0 EDMONTON, Ab. (May 26, 2013) – The Eddies came into Sunday’s game against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers with second place as an attainable goal. It was the visiting Strikers who came out the stronger side however and put FC Edmonton under pressure early. Keeper Lance Parker was forced into making two big saves from close range within the first 15 minutes. In the 19th minute, the Eddies’ stingy backline lost an important piece when Carlyle Mitchell went down in the box with no one around him. The Trinidad & Tobago international was forced into an early substitution and Adrian LeRoy came on to replace him at centre-back. In the 26th minute, the game was turned on its head. Parker was deemed to have taken down Stefan Dimitrov in the box and the referee went straight to her pocket and pulled out a Red card. John Smits came in to replace Parker in goal and the second-year Eddies’ first action of the season was to face Dimitrov’s penalty. Smits guessed wrong but was still able to make the save with his trailing leg to keep his 10-men squad even at 0-0. The penalty seemed to wake up the home team and they put the Strikers under pressure for the last 15 minutes of the half.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net however and the score remained 0-0 at halftime. It was Dimitrov once again in the 65th who got the first good chance of the second half. After receiving a pass in front of goal, he let a shot go and Smits came up with yet another big save. Just minutes later, Shaun Saiko had a clear shot but pulled it just wide of the near post. In the 68thminute, captain Albert Watson, in his first game of the season, left a leg in and took down the Strikers attacker in the box. The visitors were awarded their second penalty of the match and this time Carlos Salazar was able to beat Smits to make it 1-0. The Eddies had one last chance to tie it up in the 85th when Daryl Fordyce set up Eddie Edward for a shot but the defender couldn’t keep the ball down and it sailed over the net. “We can blame officials all day long but at the end of the day, we didn’t make the most of our opportunities,” coach Colin Miller said after the game. “It’s disappointing but there were some positives that we can take from the game and move on.” Next up for FC Edmonton is a match at home against 2012 NASL Champions the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

CanMNT Update: Miller & Roster Canada out in Edmonton, his new hometown, where he is currently Head Coach at NASL side FC Edmonton. “It’s an exciting game for me as it’s in my home city,” said Miller. “During my playing years fans in Edmonton offered tremendous support to the Canada team and we hope they will be out in full force to turn it into ‘Fortress Commonwealth’ on match day.” The Canada v Costa Rica match will be televised nationally on all four Sportsnet regional networks (20.00 ET / 17.00 PT). The camp in Edmonton is part of Canada’s continued preparations for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup to take place in USA in July.

Photo Credit: Tony Lewis Colin Miller has been appointed as the Interim Head Coach for Canada’s upcoming Men’s International Friendly against Costa Rica at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, AB on 28 May. Miller has previously acted as Interim Head Coach for the MNT during a spell in 2003/2004 and recently took charge of the team during a January 2013 camp in USA. Canada rebounded from an opening loss to Denmark during the January camp to earn a 0:0 draw away to USA in Houston, TX. “I’m the proudest man in Canada, once again,” said Miller. “We will be hoping to build on the positive way we finished our last camp together with a result away to USA, and also looking to build on the good work that Tony Fonseca did with the team during the recent camp in Qatar.” Miller is also looking forward to leading

Canada has announced its 18-player roster for the upcoming Men’s International Friendly against Costa Rica on 28 May (18.00 local kickoff) at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, AB. Canada’s roster selection for the friendly features a mix of European-based players with a sizeable contingent from MLS clubs as well. Edmonton natives Tosaint Ricketts and Randy Edwini-Bonsu have been named to the squad for Canada’s first match in Alberta since 2008. Toronto FC and former Canada U-20 midfielder Jonathan Osorio has earned his first call-up to an MNT camp. Doneil Henry and Samuel Piette have earned recalls to the senior team after featuring for Canada at February’s CONCACAF U-20 Championship. “The match against Costa Rica will be a great challenge for this young group,” said Interim Head Coach Colin Miller. “Hopefully some of these young lads will rise to the occasion and stake a claim for a place at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. “We are playing at home and we know that means we need to be positive - and I will certainly encourage the boys to be positive. We will not sit

back and wait for Costa Rica to come after us. Miller, who is currently also serving as the Head Coach for NASL side FC Edmonton, noted that it would be a special homecoming for both Ricketts and Edwini-Bonsu who will be in contention to make their first hometown appearance for the Men’s National Team. “It’s a special occasion for any player to play a national team game in their home city,” said Miller. “I know they’ll both be very excited by the game.” The Canada-Costa Rica friendly in Edmonton is part of Canada’s continued preparations for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup to take place in July. Canada will kick-off the tournament on 7 July against Martinique in Pasadena, CA; will then travel to Seattle, WA for an 11 July fixture against Mexico; and will then close-out the group stage with a match against Panama in Denver, CO on 14 July. CHANGE TO ORIGINAL ROSTER: It was annonced on Friday 24 May that defender Nik Ledgerwood and midfielder Daniel Haber would be joining the Canada squad in Edmonton. It was also annoucned that defender Nana Attakora has withdrawn from the camp due to injury. Ledgerwood, a Canada MNT regular in recent years, and a native of Lethbridge, Alberta will be looking to make his senior debut in his home province. Haber, meanwhile has earned his first callup into the Canadian system. The 21-year-old Toronto native played NCAA soccer for Cornell University where he was named Ivy League player of the Year; and was a first-team All-American. Haber currently plays his club football with Maccabi Haifa FC in Israel.

A Salute To Fathers Behind every FC Edmonton player, coach and staff member, there’s a supportive and loving Father. The Eddies salute all the Soccer Dad’s out there and invite them to come out and watch their Son’s in action on July 16 as we take on the Carolina RailHawks at Clarke Stadium! Michael Nonni Q: Tell us a little about your dad.... A: My Dad was born and raised in Vancouver - he literally came from nothing, worked his way up. He was a soccer player and got drafted by the Whitecaps in the old NASL - tried out in the US and California before he decided to throw his hat into the business world. Q: What was his involvement like in your development as a soccer player? A: He taught me everything I know about the game and had a ball at my feet since I was three-yearsold. My dad was the one that woke up early to drive me to every practice and has always been my biggest believer and supporter. Q: Living in Vancouver, he must have come out for the Amway game... A: Of course! He came out to the game in Vancouver with about 30 others - a mixture of family and friends. He watches all the other games on TV when he can. He’s always been a big soccer fan of mine and in general. Q: What is the best memory you have of your Dad? A: When he took me over to Europe - he was an assistant coach on my school team. We went to Spain and sharing those moments with him - going to see the likes of Barcelona and other teams - is something that I’ll always have and are some of my best memories of my Dad.

shock to the family and we sorely miss him. He was quite a character - a coal miner ever since leaving school and was the instigator of us moving to Vancouver in 1975. He worked in a steel factory until he retired. He loved golf and the occasional beer, it has to be said, fanatical Glasgow Rangers supporter. Loved his family and his wife and was very proud of his grand-kids. Q: Do you have a specific memory of your Dad in your soccer career? A: I came on as a sub against the Seattle Sounders when I was 17 and playing for the Toronto Blizzards. He was in the crowd when I brought down Peter Ward in the box for a penalty kick. I remember looking over to the crowd and I could see my dad taking on all the 30,000 fans around him, insisting that it was never a penalty. Q: Now you have a family of our own - can you share what it’s like being a Dad? A: Fantastic - absolutely fantastic! I have a son, Ryan, and a daughter, Sarah. Both Maria, my wife, and I are very proud of our kids. When it comes to our kids, it’s nothing but the best for them - we are supporting them all the time. Ryan is very intelligent and wants to become a lawyer one day. Sarah is a great soccer player and hopes to get a scholarship to continue playing in University. Mallan Roberts Q: Can you share a little about your Dad? A: My Dad is... well he’s my role model, my hero. He brought me here when I was 8 and raised me by himself. He was working and struggled a bit, but he did everything he could to support me. Q: How did your Dad support you at the beginning of your soccer career?

Q: Would you like to share a little bit about your Dad?

A: He took me to my first try-out. He told me it was going to be a dentist appointment. Next thing you know he stopped at a field and handed me my boots and the rest is history. I’m surprised I never picked up on it when he packed my boots! Q: So your Dad must be a pretty big fan!

A: Unfortunately my Dad passed away a year last January after an 18 day battle with cancer. It was a

Australia and other family members. He doesn’t come to the games, but watches on TV and does what he can with his work schedule. Q: Any specific memories stand out with you and your Dad? A: Coming here from Africa - it was tough being so young and being far away from what I’ve known before. He didn’t show any weakness and every time I was crying, he just kept smiling and telling me everything will turn out. Rocky DeLuca (FCE Front Office Staff Member) Q: Tell us what it’s like being a Dad... A: It’s an incredible experience - I have 3 boys, an 11-year-old, a 3-year-old and one who passed away last August. It’s just an incredible experience seeing your kids grow up and become people! Q: You have a very special story with Madden - would you like to share? A: Madden’s first birthday is coming up in June. Madden was born with a bad heart and had a lot of issues before passing away in August. To help with the grieving process for myself and my family, we’ve set up a foundation in his name for people to show their support and also to give back to the Stollery that helped us out so much. Q: How do you support your boys when it comes to playing soccer? A: I’ve coached one of my sons since he was 4-years-old. You try to teach them the game, but at the end of the day you just want them to have fun and that’s the biggest lesson for them. Q: Your family has some pretty big soccer connections in the city - want to tell us a little about your Dad? A: My Dad came from Italy and has always been passionate about the game. My 3 bothers have all been involved in the sport and what I’m doing with my kids is exactly what my Dad did with me. He encouraged me to do my best in soccer, but to always have fun - that was always the main focus in our family.

Eric Fath (Tom Fath’s Son - President of M31 Design) Q: Start off by telling us a little about your dad…. A: My dad is co-owner with his brother Dave, of the Fath Group of companies. He was born and raised in Edmonton and has been a part of the business community in Edmonton for a long time. He’s a big supporter of everything in Edmonton and I’m constantly finding out about all the new projects. He has so many things going on, but he always finds time to help us out. Q: What sort of support has your dad provided to you throughout your life? Career? A: He’s my best friend, my mentor, my boss and of course my dad! We spend a huge about of time together and he’s always there for me when I need it most. The number of times he’s saved the FC Edmonton game production is extraordinary. He’s always a phone call away and he’s always willing to help before and after the game. I’m going to buy him a pair of gloves for Father’s Day - he’s our cable wrapper and proud of it! Q: Is there a specific memory that stands out between you and your dad? A: When I was 4 or 5 years old, he’s always been taking me out to the plant and showing me all the equipment and driving around. I think it’s a pretty good memory for him as well.

CanWNT Roster Announced for June USA Friendly

Photo Credit: CSA Canada WNT has announced its 18-player roster for the Sunday 2 June (16.30 local kick-off) Women’s International Friendly against USA at BMO Field in Toronto. The squad features 14 players who were part of Canada’s bronze-medal-winning roster at London 2012. In addition to the Olympic group, youngsters Kadeisha Buchanan, Tiffany Cameron and Ashley Lawrence continue to keep their places in the senior team after previous involvement with the side early in 2013. Rachel Quon, a 21-year-old defender for Chicago Red Stars in NWSL, has earned her first call-up to a Canada camp. Striker Melissa Tancredi rejoins the group for the first time since the team won its Olympic bronze medal against France in August 2012. Of the 18 players named to the squad 10 featured in the Olympic semi-final between Canada and USA on 6 August 2012 in Manchester, UK. “It was important for us to bring in a blend of youth and experience for this game,” said Head Coach John Herdman. “We feel we have a good blend of players that have experience playing against USA – but we are also sticking to our task of preparing for the future.” Canada v USA, ‘The Rematch, June 2nd at BMO Field The Canada-USA match at BMO Field sold out on the first day of public on-sale and Herdman is looking to Canadian supporters to give the team a taste of the passionate home support it is anticipating at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. “The fans are going to play a massive part in the game,” said Herdman. “We will be playing in front of packed house and all of the pressure that goes with that. It’s important for this group of players, particularly the young ones, to get a real sense of the support we are looking forward to in 2015. “We know the crowd will be in full voice and

right behind us.” Canada will also open the doors to its training session on Thursday 30 May, ahead of the soldout Canada-USA Rematch in Toronto. More than an opportunity for fans to get an insider look at how Head Coach John Herdman and his side prepare for the friendly, the session will feature the unveiling of a new Umbro Canada Soccer kit through a special presentation. “It’s an opportunity for young players to see their heroes up-close and personal,” said Herdman. “It will be a great window into the preparation that goes on at the top level and the type of environment we try create for our national teams.” The Canada-USA match itself on Sunday 2 June will be broadcast live coast-to-coast in Canada on all four Sportnset regional networks (16.30 ET / 13.30 PT). Fans will be able to follow build-up video coverage to the match on CanadaSoccerTV beginning on Monday 27 May. A11 NY Cosmos show off New Look The New York Cosmos announced today that Nike will be the team’s official kit supplier for the 2013 NASL fall season. The attached jersey designs have been created by Nike in conjunction with the Cosmos. When the Cosmos return to the field at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium on Aug. 3 for the first time in nearly 30 years, they will sport the same colors and iconic logo as previously adorned by soccer legends Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto during the 70s and 80s. “Nike is undoubtedly one of the top sports apparel companies in the world,” Cosmos COO Erik Stover said. “We’re excited to enter into partnership with Nike and join their global soccer family. This is a significant step in our return to competitive soccer and we look forward to growing our long-term partnership.” The Cosmos’ primary kit for the NASL 2013 fall season features a white shirt with green crewneck collar, numbers and letters, plus white shorts with a green stripe and number. The secondary kit features a similar design with the green and white reversed. Both designs will be worn with white socks.

“Nike Soccer is proud and honored to partner with the New York Cosmos to provide innovative performance and training products to the coaches and players of the Club,” Nike Soccer’s General Manager for North America, Mark Seneker said. The Cosmos jerseys will be available for pre-order from www.NYCosmos.com/shop beginning in June. The jerseys will also be sold during all Cosmos home games at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium this fall. The Cosmos return to the playing field for the first time in nearly 30 years on Aug. 3 at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium when they face their old rivals, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Ottawa Fury Unveils new Logo After receiving more than 1,000 000 submissions during a 5-day online logo selection campaign, Ottawa Fury FC President John Pugh unveiled the North American Soccer League club’s official logo on Saturday afternoon. “The fans’ input has been invaluable and we responded to their comments,” said Pugh. “We are pleased with the logo as the centerpiece of our re-branding.” The official Ottawa Fury FC crest was one of the three logos voted on during the selection campaign back in early April. After the results and feedback were reviewed some minor changes were made to this crest, which will now become the centerpiece of the Fury FC brand.

The crest has a tradition soccer shield design housing the name Ottawa Fury FC as well as a flame that will serve as a symbol of club. Acclaimed creative agency Downstream Design and Technology work closely with the Fury FC staff and OSEG partners on the final logo design and overall branding of the Fury FC brand. The Fury FC logo was unveiled in a special presentation during halftime of the UEFA Champions League final match at the Berryman Pub. Fans who have purchased their Priority Registration Number (PRNs), the Bytown Boys Supporters Club and OSEG staff, were on hand for the second major announcement of the week for Fury FC. On Thursday afternoon, Fury FC appointed Marc Dos Santos as the first head coach in franchise history.
