PROF. DR. MOHAMED AMIN EMBI Ph.D. (TESOL.) (Leeds), M.Ed. (TESOL.) (Leeds), Dip. Education (TESL) (UKM), B.A. Hons (First Class) (Brock, Canada)

Prof. Mohamed Amin is well-known in Malaysia as a professional educator, academic leader and innovator in teaching and learning especially in the area of e-Learning especially in the area of open educational resources (OER). He is the recipient of the distinguished ISESCO Science Laureate 2010 for his contributions in Technology (e-Learning). He is also the first recipient of the most prestigious National Academic Award 2006 for Teaching introduced by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. Prof. Mohamed Amin was born in Georgetown, Penang on 17 September 1963. His father was a Chief Clark at Penang Port Council and died when he was studying at Westland Primary School, Penang. After completing SPM in 1980 at Penang Free School, he left to Brock University, Canada to pursue his dream to become an educator. He was the first Bumiputra government sponsored student in Canada to obtain his degree with 1 st Class Honors (1986). Before joining the teaching profession, Mohamed Amin completed his Diploma in Education at the Faculty of Education, UKM with distinction in 1987. After teaching at a rural school in Sungai Acheh, Penang for four years, Mohamed Amin was appointed as a Tutor at the Faculty of Education, UKM in 1992 and left to continue his study at Leeds University, UK. He was the first Asian student to obtain M.Ed. TESOL with Distinction at the School of Education. Upon completing his Ph.D. in 1996 at the same university, Mohamed Amin returned to Malaysia and began his career as a lecturer at the Faculty of Education, UKM. Because of his scholarly work in the field of education, especially in the area of e-learning, he was promoted to the post of Associate Professor in 2000 and Professor in 2006. His professional expertise covers e-learning, ICT in education and learning strategies. He is an international academic figure in e-learning and is regularly invited to deliver keynote addresses in international conferences, to provide expert advice as consultant, and to serve several advisory bodies and committees. His expertise and experience in e-learning and higher eduction qualify him to be appointed as Member, Ministry of Higher Education, Critical Agenda Project for Higher Learning National Strategic Plan and Member, Accreditation Committee (Social & Humanities, 2007-2009; Social Science, 2009-2001), Malaysian Qualification Agency. He is also appointed by MQA as Panel Member (2009-2010), Academic Performace Audit for SEGI University College, Nilai International College, Sunway Univeristy College and HELP University College.

Career Prof. Mohamed Amin has been the Deputy Director (e-Learning), Centre for Academic Advancement since June 2007. Prior to the appointment, he served as the Head, Department of Educational Methodology and Practices, Faculty of Education, UKM since January 2006 until his new appointment. He was the Deputy Dean (Academic), Faculty of Education, from October 2000 – September 2003. His outstanding professional and leadersip skills were also demonstrated during his tenure as the Chaiman, Social Science Research Nich, UKM from 2006-2009. He has extensive experience in formulating and implementing strategies towards positioning social science research in UKM to become world’s 55 ranking (Social Science) in THES. Prof. Mohamed Amin has also secured several research and innovation funds, from both local and international agencies. Besides obtaining research grants from Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MOSTI) through IPRA and ScienceFund as well as Ministry of Higher Education through FRGS, he was also involved in the UNESCO Pariticipation Programme. He was the Chairman of the International Conference on Teaching & Learning, International Conference on Technology & Vocational Education, International Conference on Education for All organized by Malaysian Commission for UNESCO and served as a member of many local and international technical committees, including 5th Comparative Education Society of Asia Biennal Conference 2005, International Conference on e-Learning 2007 and 2009 as well as International Conference on. Publications & Supervision To disseminate research findings on e-learning, besides publishing more than 250 technical papers on teaching and learning especially on e-learning and language learning strategies.Prof Mohamed Amin has also published more than 25 books and 45 book chapters. He has also successfully supervised 22 Ph.D. and 45 Master students over the past 10 years and published more than 85 publications with them. Professional Services He is the first elected President of the Mobile Learning Association of Malaysia (2009-till present) and Charmain, Malaysian Public Universities e-Learning Council (2009 till present). He is also the Executive Editor of VirTEC Journal (2000-2003), Internet Journal of e-Learning and Teaching (2004-2006), Malaysian Journal of e-Learning (2007-2009) and ASEAN Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2009 till present). Because of his outstanding achievements and innovations in teaching and learning, Prof. Mohamed Amin is often invited by Malaysian public and private universities to share his expertise on innovative teaching & learning (UM, USM, UPM, UUM, UiTM, UMT, UTeM, UniSZA, MMU, INTI University College), Effecitve Supervision (USM, UniSZA), Publication (USIM, KUIS, USM, UniSZA), Research (USIM, UDM, USM, UniSZA) and e-Learning (MEIPTA, AKEPT, UiTM, UPM, USM, UTeM, UMT, UniKL, IIUM, UPNM, UUM, UniSZA, INTI University College, UNITEN, Akademi Percukaian Malaysia, EPT Training Institute, Politechnics, MRSM). He was appointed as Board of Studies/Academic Advisor for UTM, USM, UUM, UniSZA, IIUM, UTHM and KUIS. He was the external accessor for academic post for UUM, UiTM, UPSI, UniSZA, UMP, IIUM and UNITEN and external examiner for more than 35 postgraduate thesis from UPM, UM, USM, UTM, OUM, IIUM and UNIMAS. He is husband to Rohayati Haroun, a Managing Director; and father to Maryam (27), Ibrahim (25), Aishah (23), Fatimah (21), Abu Bakar (19), Khodijah (18) and Muhammad (17).
