WATER SPORTS Canoeing

Canoeing is a water sport, usually practiced in a canoe, but is also practiced by kayak. It began to be an Olympic sport in 1936. The canoes were developed for thousands of years, especially by the natives of North America. The word is derived from the word Kenu, which is a type of canoe made from a tree trunk. The canoe was used for many years in the colonization of North America, Amazon and Polynesia.

Wakeboarding is a water sport played with a kind of snowboard pulled by a speedboat. It was developed in the United States. At first it was practiced with a surfboard. It can be practiced in the sea or river / lake, however, it requires many security measures.

Wakeboarding

Surfing is a water sport and is considered by many as an extreme sport. It is a difficult sport because there must be an adaptation to the waves, requiring a perfect balance between board and wave. No one knows its origin but it is said that it was first practiced by the Polynesians (Pacific Islanders), especially in Hawaii. Australia is the country with the largest number of world champions in the history of this sport.

WATER SPORTS

Besides the water sports mentioned before, which are practiced in the nature, there are many other water sports which would be difficult to list here and need their own spaces. So we are only going to mention two other: Diving and Water polo. Diving is a sport performed by plunging into the water from either a springboard or a platform. The diver can spring upward to obtain extra height in the dive, giving more time in the air to do somersaults and twists. Its origin dates from the ancient Greece. Water polo is a team sport similar to handball. The aim is to put the ball in the opposing goal. It was invented in the 19th century but it was already practiced in the 18th century, when it was called water rugby.

WATER GAMES

Traditional games are recreational activities that are intended to cover all the games that bring with them a memory of generations, of what our grandparents used to occupy their leisure time, experimentation and fun, to develop relationships with colleagues. The novelty factor, the willingness / total satisfaction and healthy competition is the most important aspects of these games. That is why the rules, although defined, are simple and the referees are also the players. Another feature of these games is that they are especially popular and emerge as result of their own people, their daily work and their customs, so they are different from region to region. Traditional games were made by using materials that resulted from daily tasks, children created their own games with the remains of materials that parents used in crafts. This is because most of the time, children accompanied their parents at work, because at that time there were no day care centers as today, so they had to occupy their time with something. Currently, television, technology and modern toys have changed children's play and the games that adults occupy their leisure time. The lack of road space and security that forced some of these habits has changed. In our region water games are practiced, especially during the holidays, in fishing villages. These games, without well-defined rules, are for example the fishing boat races, "Catch the greased pig", in which a pig covered with grease is thrown into the water and the person who manages to grasp the pig gets it, swimming competitions, and others. One of them, "The greasy stick", is common in many traditional festivals or summer parties, so we are going to describe it.

First, fishermen secure a round stick in the boat, as shown in the picture. This wooden stick, with about 6 feet long, is placed in the bow of the boat, or sideways.

After securely attached to the boat, the stick is rubbed with body fat called tallow. And even when the game is underway, the organizers have a small boat nearby, whether to help any participant who gets hurt, whether to put more fat on the stick.

Then the game begins: the boat is in the middle of the river and the rule is to take a flag that is placed on the tip of the greasy pole. Sometimes are used flags of various colors that correspond to different cash prizes. The game has to be done barefoot.

There are other games performed in the water. We are going to describe some of them now:

WATER GAMES BRAN

Description: two bowls, one with water, the other with bran and coins (six to ten). Each competitor has only one turn, the competitor plunges his head into the bowl with water, then he/she has to put it in the bowl with the bran, to try to catch the coins with his/her mouth. When the competitor takes his/her head out of the second bowl his/her turn finishes. The win is the competition that gets more coins.

THE TREASURE’S KEEPER The game lasts approximately 10 minutes and it is played with four or more players and a ball or float. One of the participants is chosen by draw to guard the treasure. This will be an object that floats. The most common is to use a float or a ball. All participants get themselves into the water and the guard lets the treasure float freely. From then on, he will try to catch someone to take his place as the keeper. All the other players try to get the treasure out of the water without the guard touching them. Players can pass the treasure to the others, but if one of them drops it he will become the new keeper. If someone manages to get the treasure of the water, he has to name another player to be a treasure keeper, along with the other one. The game ends when there are more keepers than players.

STONE SKIPPING This game lasts approximately 10 minutes, it is played with two or more players and flat stones. Along the coast each player seeks a few flat stones, not too large. Once the players have the stones, it is chosen an area where there are no bathers. One after the other, the players throw a stone into the sea. To make it bounce, the players must hold the stone between the thumb and the forefinger and throw it. Thrown this way, the stone bounces on the surface, reaching much further. At first it takes a little practice and it is best that the sea is calm. The object of the game is to see how many times a stone can be made to bounce before sinking.

WATER GAMES THE BIG FLIP

The game lasts about 5 minutes and it is played with two or more players. The players put themselves in pairs. One of them lies upside down and the other one place his feet on each side of his partner’s head. Each player grabs his partner by the ankles so that their bodies form a ring / circle. Very slowly, the player who is on top makes a tumble, dragging his companion and lifting it. Players advance by rotating the circle / hoop that they form; they can also make wheels of three players.

CARRY THE EWER The game lasts for approximately 5 minutes and it is played with three or more players. Players are grouped in threes and place themselves at the starting line. One player squats and folds his hands under the legs. At a signal, each of his team members grabs him by the arms and run with him in a predetermined direction. When one of the players says "change", another player becomes the ewer. Changes are made until everyone has been the ewer. The winning team is the one who gets further with the two changes or the team who arrives first at the finishing line.
