BILBAO, SPAIN: Russia’s Artem Silchenko has dominated the penultimate stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving season in Bilbao, Spain, the capital city of the Basque Country. “My back armstand was great – I got one 10 – and I’m so happy,” said Silchenko after the event. Gary Hunt’s second-placed finish is enough for the Brit to take back the title that he relinquished to the Russian in 2013, saying “I’m so happy. I’ve had one slip-up in Portugal but I’ll forget about that. It’s been a wicked year and it’ll be a pleasure to dive in Mexico knowing the title is already secured. All the time I’ve been here I’ve been diving really well and then I missed my hardest dive in the second round today and I was kicking myself. When I was on the end of the platform for my last dive, I just told myself ‘imagine this is the last time you’ll ever get to do this dive’ and I was really happy with how it went.” Sunshine, heavy showers and a rumble or two of thunder above the already dramatic setting of the Guggenheim Museum made for a truly spectacular event that was witnessed by an unbelievably huge crowd of 52,000 enthusiastic spectators who lined the Nervión River underneath La Salve Bridge. As the season comes down to the wire and only the top five of the overall standings automatically qualifying for next year, the fight for vital ranking points is tight. England’s Blake Aldridge currently holds fifth place, but Jonathan Paredes is nipping at his heels and only 10 points behind (540pts) in sixth. Positions four to eight are all still fighting for one of the coveted top-five spots, which will be decided during the final competition of the 2014 season. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

TOKYO, JAPAN: Avex Group Holdings, Japan’s leading entertainment company, has launched ‘majotae’, a fine, natural hemp fabric brand. Products for next Spring/Summer are in development with Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd, the leading department store operator in Japan. The company says majotae’s quality is not only ideal for fine apparel, but has potential for other applications, such as furniture, décor fabric and medical uses. Commenting on the launch,

current expectations, the Oakley Future Sport Project is a disruptive glance into the future of sports performance technology, as told by legendary racing cyclist, Cadel Evans; surfing prodigy, Jack Robinson (above, left); and Olympic snowboarder, Scotty James (above, right) - three of Australia’s leading design experts and the brand that has a history of making things better, Oakley.

Shigekazu Takeuchi, Avex Group Holdings representative director, said, “This project to revive centuries-old hemp conveys to us today the culture and wisdom cherished in pre-modern Japan. It is with great joy for Avex to be a part of this significant project.” Hiroshi Ohnishi, president and CEO of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings, also commented saying, “I’m impressed not only by the quality of the fabric, but also by the vision of the project. Through our products, we hope to bring the spirit of majotae to the world.”

THE RENAULT-NISSAN ALLIANCE AND DAIMLER: A GROWING PARTNERSHIP Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the RenaultNissan Alliance, and Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, briefed the media about their companies’ expanding partnership at a press event earlier this month during the Paris Motor Show. The scope of the original cooperation launched in 2010 was initially limited to three projects mainly in Europe. Since then, the combined portfolio between the Alliance and Daimler has quadrupled to 12 major projects in Europe, Asia and North America. NEW AUDI TT SERIES Following the successful introduction of the Audi R8 LMS Cup in Asia, the company will launch the Audi Sport TT Cup in Germany next year as part of the DTM season. HAVE YOU EVER had an amazing event to go to? You have been looking forward to this night for such a long time and your excitement level is building. You have your dress all sorted out, it’s that perfect blue dress you have been eyeing off for some time now, such a magnificent colour, you are positive that everyone will not be able to take their eyes off you as you make your entrance. How could anyone not look and stare? This dress has been hanging in your bedroom for a few weeks now and you can barely take your eyes off it yourself. The only problem now is – accessories! Every pair of shoes you pick up is just that fraction wrong in shade, slightly green, or slightly too purple, it’s the same with the clutch bags. You have turned your city upside down, you have tried internet shopping, but you just can’t find the right shade. You can WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

always resort to wearing black or nude tones but it won’t give you the perfect look you were after. We spoke to American actress, Kristina Anapau, who went through this situation – here is how she handled it. “I had a red carpet event to go to, about four years ago, and I had the perfect dress and the perfect clutch and jewellery and I just figured that I could grab a pair of shoes out of my closet that would work, but it was the night of the event and I had something (shoes) that worked alright but I had another pair that would have been perfect if I could have just changed them to a different colour. “So, I experimented that evening – spraying them with regular spray paint and they looked great, but they started chipping and cracking. I made it through the red carpet fine and then about five minutes after that it was a disaster.”

The experience set Kristina’s mind into overdrive wondering if there was a product on the market where you could successfully transform the colour of a pair of shoes at a moment’s notice. Spending a lot of time trying to find a product that would do this was unsuccessful, so she took matters into her own hand – “I set out to find a chemist who could help me create something.” The first two chemists Kristina worked with had problems with the formula, they could either get the adhesion of the product correct or the durability, but never both together. But Kristina was determined and being persistent found another chemist who turned out to be a charm, “he was able to provide me with a really great product that could do everything I wanted.” And thus, Color It New, was born. “It’s a spray, it looks sort of like

a spray paint, but chemically it is a lot more complex. It has a lot more qualities of a dye than paint, but it does cover like paint, and you can change the colour of your shoes, handbags, belts, other accessories, and wallets, anything you want with no chipping, cracking or peeling. It is pretty revolutionary; I have never seen anything like it. We have worked for years to get it to be exactly where it is, to have a lot of adhesion and flexibility, it’s a dream. It’s a really amazing product.” The product is an aerosolized colorant that is the result of a technological process and is formulated specifically to bond with all types of shoe surfaces, including, but not limited to: leather, rubber, plastic, suede, canvas, and satin. It allows you to transform any pair of shoes into a custom-coloured pair that looks just as flawless and “brand new” as any new shoes you would find in a department store. Color it New comes in a wide array of fashion colours, with new colours debuting all the time! The entire process takes less than 15 minutes. No need for primers, second coats, or sealers. It’s quick drying and in less than an hour, you will be wearing your “new” shoes, bag, or belt - and feeling fantastic! Its mess free, anyone can do it and the kit comes with everything you need, from start to finish. It took four years and it required a lot of persistence, “There were some moments where I was completely disheartened, and I put the project down for quite some time. I really owe several of my close friends a lot because they didn’t stop bugging me about it and keep going with it.” But thanks to Kristina’s persistence and determination we can now all colour change our shoes and accessories at whim and at a lot less cost than buying new. Not only can we colour change them, we can personalise them – imagine – spots or stripes, or

a combination – whatever you can do with a spray can, you can do with this product – the

KING’S RANSOM WINERY is one of the most haunted places in America, with a long history of bizarre suicides. Six ghost hunters have been given the rare opportunity to conduct a paranormal investigation. What they discover terrifies them. The movie Altergeist is a paranormal thriller that was filmed at Korbel winery in Sonoma, California. Nestled amongst the redwoods, the grounds of the Korbel winery have been witness to some horrific tragedies. In the late 1800s a woman scrawled mad writings over the walls of the attic before taking her own life there. Many grounds keepers have experienced strange happenings in and around the house and refuse to approach it at night. There have been many other

possibilities and designs are endless. www.coloritnew.com

stories of tragic deaths in the area and orbs of light and the ‘white lady’ of the Korbel house have been seen moving through the forest at night – all became inspiration for the movie at Altergeist. The movie stars Kristina Anapau who plays the role of Theresa Augland, a movie producer, who takes a crew of film makers / ghost hunters to King’s Ransom winery in search of paranormal activity. Kristina spoke to Darren House to reveal what was appealing about the lead role in a ‘horror movie’, particularly when it was filmed on location at a haunted winery. “I had been asked to come and read for a different role than I ended up doing, and of course I liked the role but I liked the lead role more because of her (the character’s) determination and that she WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

is four months pregnant in the movie which I thought was really interesting. It gave an added level of the audience caring about the character when she was going through all this horrifying, terrifying stuff. She was running and having to face all these horrible things, I really liked that. “I went in to read for the part that they wanted and I had decided in my mind that I was going to change their minds without saying a word. I was going to just send them the message from my mind that I wanted to be Theresa and sure enough, two days later I got the call and they said ‘we don’t want you for the other role, but we would love to offer you the lead if you’re interested’. “It takes place at a haunted winery in Northern California, we shot on location at an actual haunted winery, and it was easy to get into character. We shot at night and the location was spectacular. “Tedi Sarafian was the writer/ director; it was such a pleasure to work with him. He is so great at writing and developing well rounded, strong characters, especially female characters. It was really wonderful to be able to portray one of his strong female characters and we had a great time on set.” As the movie progresses, longburied memories and deep-seated

fears bubble to the surface, the ghost hunters are terrified to learn that even the ghosts fear the truly sinister presence that has haunted the estate for generations.

Altergeist opens in cinemas on November 7and Kristina says “it will definitely keep audiences on the edges of their seats.” www.altergeistmovie.com

LILY HAS THE NUMBERS

I am enjoying the columns by Lily Serna. I used to watch her on television and she made the show fun. It was a show that could very easily have been really boring. Reading what she writes now I

see that it is her personality, she really is a fun person who gets out there and lives life in a fun way. I would still like to see her back on television in Letters and Numbers; let’s start a group to bring Lily back! Tiffany Payne Mudgeeraba, Queensland, AUSTRALIA

“WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD! What’s your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some don’t; but keep on dreamin’ - this is Hollywood. Always time to dream, so keep on dreamin’.” So said Pretty Woman character, Happy Man (played by Abdul Salaam El Razzac), and it’s something I’m thinking of as I head to Tinseltown. Everyone knows young hopefuls have flocked to the entertainment capital of the world since movies began, however I’ve become even more aware of this phenomenon since speaking to some of those very people and reporting their dreams, ambitions and struggles in prodijee. While moving to Los Angeles is exciting for those trying to make their mark in show business, there is trepidation in moving far away to another land with no income, little knowledge of the city, and in many cases, unable to speak English. There are a seemingly endless number of unsuccessful auditions, record company knockbacks and a million other people all trying out for the very same gig. All the while, the closest most get to a sound stage or recording studio is dreaming about it while waiting tables at a diner. While these temporary defeats may cause many to question the validity of their career choice, Australians such as Mel Gibson, Olivia NewtonJohn, Eric Bana, Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman made it in the toughest entertainment town in the world. Prodijee salutes those who follow their dreams, no matter what. To them we say, keep on dreamin.

PEPPA PIG IS a pre-school phenomenon. Created by animation studio, Astley Baker Davies, and distributed by Entertainment One, this adorable little cartoon character is loved by every young child. You will see Peppa Pig on a multitude of products as this pig, loved by one and all, sells products fast! Why does a product featuring a pig sell? Because the kids love it! So, the Cancer Council has collaborated with one of television’s most-loved pre-school characters to produce a new range of SPF50+ sunscreen. Why? Because Peppa Pig means fun, and in the eyes of children, everything they do has to be fun, so, applying sunscreen should be fun too. “We are very excited by the Peppa Pig range, and see it as a way to encourage more pre-school and primary school-aged children to use sunscreen to protect their skin,” said Neil Henney, Cancer Council Australia’s National Licensing Manager. Peppa fans will delight in seeing their favourite pink pig gracing the packages of Kids SPF 50+ 50ml Ezi Clip (RRP AU$9.95), Kids SPF 50+ 75ml Roll On (RRP AU$10.95), and Kids SPF 50+ 200ml Finger Spray (RRP

I LOVE THE warmer weather, sunshine, floaty dresses, shorts, open toe shoes with brightly painted toe nails, endless parties. So why do I have a *sad face*? Cellulite! According to statistics, 85 per cent of Australian women will show the physical signs of cellulite after the age of 18. Yes, I fall into this category. I know I should love my body, but I just can’t get over those dreaded dimples, and, I know I am not the only one. Founder of HebeBODY detox coffee scrubs, Cherylee Bennett, is on the war against the wobble and offers women and men an effective solution to what she coins, “body depresso.” It’s safe to say that most caffeine lovers drink their coffee. But Cherylee rubs it on her body. After suffering from a range of skin conditions since a young age, and with little or no results from today’s leading skincare brands, Cherylee sought to create the ultimate detox coffee scrub to help tone and nourish the skin, and reduce the appearance of cellulite. In 2004, with a recipe book in hand and a bathtub at her disposal, she concocted a formulation containing ground coffee beans and organic Coconut Oil. The unique mixture offered an effective solution to cellulite by toning the skin, improving elasticity, and reducing skin irritation and redness while exfoliating the epidermis, reducing water retention, stimulating blood flow and toning skin for a firmer and younger-looking appearance. Now manufactured locally in a reputable production facility, the HebeBODY scrub is shipped all around the world, providing consumers with an all-natural product full of organic ingredients, minerals and antioxidants. With a pleasant coffee and coconut scent, the Detox Body Scrub promises to indulge the skin, awaken the senses, and reveal a flawless complexion. Wanting to create a product

YOU GO FOR a run, work out at the gym, run around after the kids, the weather is hot – you sweat, perspire, or - back in the day, women were said to ‘glow’. Whatever you call it, this type of ‘sweat’ is brought on by physical exertion and a thermal reaction in your body occurring due to a rise of temperature and the perspiration released is a mix of salt and water. But there is another type of sweat, now termed ‘emotional’ or ‘stress’ sweat. It is the perspiration produced if you are faced with an emotionally charged situation. This type of sweat can come in faster and unexpectedly, leading to more stress and sweat which results in a stronger odour. Now, Nivea has recognised the differences and developed a solution – Nivea Stress Protect for men and women, a clinical strength anti-perspirant deodorant which provides advanced protection against stress sweat.

SARAH AND ADAM Williams were looking for a business opportunity where they could apply their passion for protecting the environment and found it with sustainable paper product company, Caboo. While researching Caboo, founded in Canada in 2012, Sarah and Adam discovered the product would fill a gap in Australia’s market which called for a sustainable, attractive and alternate option to recycled paper. The parents from Redland Bay, Queensland, who have two daughters, aged three and five, had their children in mind when choosing to launch the business in Australia. “We are environmentally conscientious and with two daughters we’re constantly thinking about what we can do to preserve the world they’ll grow up in, while also ensuring we can build a strong family business around them,” Sarah said. Caboo Australia was the perfect business for the couple, with the products, including toilet paper, tissues and kitchen paper towels made with 100 per cent bamboo and sugarcane. “Bamboo and sugarcane are sustainable options because the grasses can be harvested within two years, a much better option than trees, which take 30 years to regrow,” Adam said. In addition, bamboo’s natural rhizome (root) network protects soil from erosion and retains moisture, and bamboo can grow in environments with depleted soil and little water. In fact, it actually returns nutrients to the soil; improving degraded areas. Bamboo doesn’t require fertilizers, insecticides or pesticides. Sugarcane is much like bamboo, but with an added environmental bonus. The ‘bagasse’ – the dry fibrous

residue that remains after the extraction of juice from the crushed stalks – is what Caboo use to make their paper. Normally this bagasse is either disposed of or burned, meaning they are re-purposing what would otherwise be discarded. Recycling or processing a tree into tissue can use much more water and energy than the minimal processing necessary to turn bamboo and sugarcane into paper. With recycled paper, the raw material still needs to be cleaned, whitened, and converted back into the final product. There have also been widespread reports of BPA found in recycled tissue after de-inking and cleaning of recycled paper. “This makes bamboo and sugarcane a renewable resource while also having significant other benefits including Caboo products being grey water safe, won’t block pipes, are 100 percent biodegradable and are whitened without chlorine or bleach. “Most importantly, Caboo products are panda friendly because the type of bamboo used isn’t a food source for pandas.” While testing the products, Sarah and Adam were surprised by the softness. “We’ve used recycled toilet paper

and tissues in the past and the products have been quite rough,” Sarah said. “Caboo products aren’t recycled; however, they have even more environmental benefits than recycled paper with the softness being a major advantage.” Caboo is 100 percent biodegradable. Its fibres quickly dissolve back into the earth, so it’s safe for all disposal systems. Launching Caboo in August this year, Adam and Sarah have begun distributing products to local businesses including chemists and day care centres. “Our business is family focused, and we intend to keep it that way. We’re stocking the products at home and we’re a small team fielding enquiries and delivering the products,” Sarah said. www.caboopaper.com.au

Be a groomed man t’s the same for men as it is for women, if you wear it, care for it! We see more and more men caring for their skin with cleansers, toners, moisturisers and going to salons to have treatments done, but with the trend for big and long beards, men also need to care for their facial hair. Prehistoric man would maintain his beard using seashells, rocks and other ambiguous paraphernalia, but what do men do now? Daniel Mahony, founder of The Groomed Man Co (right), started growing facial hair 15 years ago. Whilst holidaying around the USA with a freshly grown beard, Daniel encountered a topical elixir which solved many problems associated with in-grown hairs, including itchiness, dryness and redness. Upon his return to Melbourne, Daniel realised there was a shortage of locally produced grooming products for bearded men and sought to fill the gap using his newly found knowledge of organic essential oils. Starting as a hobby, Daniel’s range of pure to botanical oils

roadtest BURT’S BEES 100 PER CENT NATURAL LIP CRAYONS: BURT’S BEES 100 per cent natural lip crayons deliver massively on a creamy matte finish offering huge moisturising content to your lips. The colour (I tried Napa Vineyard) is bright, much brighter than I thought a product from Burt’s Bees would be. Not that this is a bad thing, it was just very surprising to me. I found that the colour wasn’t overly long lasting, and it did transfer very easily, but for the benefit of the added moisture and lip care that this product provides I am more than happy to reapply as necessary. This cream is absorbed very quickly without any greasy residue so you can slip into your sandals straight away and head out the door. Not only do my feet appear soft and smooth, my toenails seem stronger and smoother – perfect for applying those bright nail polishes for summer. EVO HAIRCARE:

Luminous Tone Perfecting Treatment – 40ml RRP AU$67.99 - to help diminish the appearance of dark spots for vibrant, healthy-looking skin.

EVO HAS BROUGHT us salty dog cocktail beach spray and helmut light for the perfect ‘do’. Salty dog is a sea-esque mist that is designed to give your hair a salty beach based texture with a matt finish. Simply mist through damp hair and blow dry (or leave to dry naturally) for the perfect ‘tousled’ beach look. The texture this product gives is also great if you want your hair to have a bit more ‘oomph’ for an ‘up do’. Helmut light is a lighter than air hairspray that dries fast and I mean FAST, and holds strong, with a very natural look. While the salty dog and helmut light products are great on their own, I found by combining the two I could have that tousled beach look lasting all day and into the night. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

PANTENE PRO V DRY SHAMPOO VOLUME BOOSTER: WITH SO MANY dry shampoos on the market, one needs to be pretty good to stand out. Pantene Pro V has missed the mark in that area, however it was brilliant for a different purpose. This fresh and kind of fruity smelling product is an amazing styling product. If you have fine hair or super clean hair that needs a bit of grit to make it easier to work with, then this is amazing. The fine mist gives texture to the roots, giving the feel of a sea salt spray but much lighter. It doesn’t get the hair clean like shampoo but it will smell clean and give a small amount of volume. The volume isn’t the kind you would get with something like teasing or a volume

powder, just some lift at the roots. Going on virtually clear is also a bonus as it is undetectable, but I would definitely dispute the oil absorption claims, there was no absorption only additional weight. Definitely a-volume- boost product but not at all a make-hair-look-clean product. Affordably priced and very accessible this product perfect if your hair is super fine and flat after just being washed. A light spray of Pantene Pro V volume boost dry shampoo will come in amazingly handy and make styling hair so much easier.

THE COLOUR THEORY SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION: WITH A NEW season rolling around, many companies are releasing new collections. It’s a beautiful time of year for makeup when fun colours come out and many looks turn much more fresh and fun. The Colour Theory collection is no different. A mix of earthy and brights’ work for any WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

occasion and are flattering on every skin tone. Within the line there is an eye shadow palette, lipsticks and nail polish. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the first two, having only taken issue with the polish. I found the polish quite streaky and the pigmentation to be inconsistent. The darks are definitely more pigmented than the light shades. Drying time was great but my polish did chip within a few hours making it virtually useless unless for a one day/night purpose, despite the long last claims. At $4 I believe there are other selections on the market that work better. The colours, however standout, being more earthy and spicy than usual at this time of year. The eye shadow was similar in that the pigmentation wasn’t consistent, however it was still very good. It’s overpriced at $10 for what you’re getting though, with so many other options available. The darks are definitely worth it but the light shades need to be packed on with a finger not brush. They also have quite bit of fallout but using fingers will help avoid this. Bendable shadows work well with each other to create any look day or night. I only had creasing issues after a long hard day, which would be expecting of anything. Definitely universal natural shades with a pop of fun colour, anyone of any age could use this palette. Speaking of fun colour, the lipstick is my favourite. Affordable at $6, it is creamy, pigmented and long wearing. I cannot fault this product I am a definitely fan, having had one before as a favourite. If you’re looking to try anything from this company, the lipstick would be my recommendation no matter what – it’s just as good as those higher end brands. I would suggest swatching however as the colour may alter slightly lighter/darker than appearance. Colour Theory really stands out in a large lipstick market as one of the best I have ever tried.

COVERGIRL BOMBSHELL VOLUME MASCARA: THE MASCARA MARKET is definitely a competitive market. With so many options out there a brand has to really stand out to be noticed. Covergirl has made some recent strides in the area and is now coming in with a new duel ended option. The Bombshell mascara combines two wands, one for extreme volume and the other for darkness. In regards to the first wand I believe it to be the same product as the LashBlast Volume. A cult favourite, it definitely separates my lashes and gives a decent amount of volume. I wouldn’t say it holds a curl for those of us with straight lashes, but not much does. The wand is also quite large and can be hard to use without transferring product. It happened to me every time. The second wand is more traditionally tapered with standard black mascara. Is it a necessity, probably not? Seeing as the Bombshell comes in black and very black as does the LashBlast you can save the trouble and simply buy

single wand mascara for the same result. It does give an amazing black appearance to the lashes but can also add crispness as well. It will also smudge around eyes if you are working in a fast paced environment. However there is no clumping, which for a layered product, can be tricky to master. At a price of $21.95, if you like two, then it’s no different than buying two affordable separates. The Bombshell is definitely a great option if you love very black lashes and are a fan of the LashBlast Volume range.

COVERGIRL BOMBSHELL SHINE SHADOW BY LASHBLAST: RECENTLY CREAM SHADOWS have become all the rage. While many brands are bringing out the typical pot and pen form, Covergirl have released a squeeze tube version. While the product may seem thick when being squeezed out it is actually a very thin cream consistency. This allows a small amount to go a very long way, giving a great amount for the cost of $11.95. The darker colours definitely carry more pigmentation than the light, these just turn to a translucent sparkle. They are slightly buildable, however this can make them harder to work with and have set for long wear. You must maintain control when

blending as to not spread further the lid area. The sparkle they give is beautiful and also adds glow to any shadow placed on top, if used as a base product. However again due to the consistency, it will crease and also fade. These shadows are beautiful on, specifically as a base, however will not last. It would all depend on what you’re doing and for how long. Something to try with the lighter colours is to also use as a cream highlight for the face if you have drier skin. With oily skin it would slip off but otherwise, if you love the dewy look, a small amount applied on the high points of the face gives a beautiful iridescent shimmer. I recommend these if you choose darker colours and aren’t looking for super long-wearing eye shadow or the lighter colours as a cream highlight for face; however in this popular market, I believe Covergirl did slightly miss the mark.

So in answer to the above, I say... I have been captivated by the magical powers of food ever since I was a young girl making pancakes in my grandmother’s kitchen. More than two decades later, I continue to be inspired by the simple pleasures that come from creating a meal for family, friends and distinguished guests. I became so fascinated with the amazing food that surrounded me in a restaurant where I was working, that I soon decided I was destined to create the food I had been serving. With a burning desire to cook and a longing to travel, I joined the Royal Australian Navy as a chef. My love for cooking soon transformed into a love for food and although they sound one and the same, I learnt that the two are very different. Cooking is one thing but creating culinary miracles with the world’s best produce and delicacies is a totally different experience. It was this new found passion for quality that had me secure a second job working under a Canadian chef, Joel, who showed me the other side of the food world that I had desperately been searching for. New exciting produce, fast paced dinner services, exciting new flavour combinations, simply put, a dream come true. The world became my culinary playground and I spent more and more time traveling to exotic destinations and immersing myself in different cultural influences and cooking techniques, experiencing everything from Christmas dinners in Cape Town and luxury yachts in Lebanon to teaching locals new culinary skills high in the Indian Himalayas. There was no doubt in my mind that cooking what was I was truly destined to do.

One day, whilst chatting with a friend, it all became quite clear; I would surrender my nomadic lifestyle and head back to Sydney to share my love and passion for food in a more intimate and bespoke manner. What started out as ‘Sarah French Personal Chef’ soon evolved into

“My love for cooking soon transformed into a love for food and although they sound one and the same, I learnt that the two are very different”

‘Sarah French Boutique Catering and Events’ and six years later it has transformed into the internationally renowned ‘Sydney’s Finest Boutique Catering And Events’. My initial dream to go solo had taken on a life of its own and I was now in a completely spell binding world of high end events, luxury yachts and the world’s best produce. Today you will find me and my internationally trained team of chefs cooking up a storm at exclusive corporate functions, elite private dinner parties, intimate weddings, and bespoke celebrity events. You may also find me cruising the Mediterranean or the South of France on a luxury Super Yacht creating world class cuisine for charter and private guests. Spending half of my year in Sydney and the other half in Europe, I feel quiet blessed and can honestly say that I have the best job in the world. Being inspired by tempestuous treats on a daily basis really lifts my spirit and ignites a passion in ways simply not possible without international travel. Nothing excites me more than introducing my guests to new and exciting foods and flavours, always amazing and sometimes a little weird but still wonderful! There really is no greater satisfaction than knowing that people who share my passion for food have appreciated my creations. I put my heart on the plate every time I cook and when people walk away with a culinary experience they never forget, it is truly a blessing in disguise.

Cocktails complements of VODKA O www.vodkao.com Entertainment complements of family and friends at a rowdy party. ollowing on from my great experience at Top Shelf, Melbourne’s Boutique Drinks festival, I was given the opportunity to try a new range of naturally crafted premixed Vodka cocktails. I jumped at the chance – firstly, I love Vodka (Vodka O holding a high place on my list of favourites) and secondly I love cocktails! The other enticement was that I was told that these New Age premixed cocktails were less sugary and fizzy. Firstly – a bit of the marketing blurb: “The Naturally crafted Vodka O premixed cocktails contain pure Vodka, carbonated filtered water, real fruit juices, fruit purees and spice flavours,” the company states. “They have no added colours or artificial flavours and

“The Strawberry, Cranberry and a touch of Basil had what I call a great party aroma – fruity and fun” have less sugar and fizz compared to other leading premixed drinks and ciders.” Great – but what do they taste like, you ask. Vodka O comes in four flavours and I was lucky enough to have the lot: First ring pull top opened was Pineapple, Cucumber & Mint. It smelled fresh and fruity and looked lovely and light in the glass.

that cranberry tartness which was offsetting the mellow strawberry sweetness and then there was that hint of basil – always there but not interfering - another winner for me. Half way through but still thirsty, I zip pulled the ring off the Pear with a hint of Vanilla. This one had a distinct pear aroma which preceded a pronounced pear flavour. The vanilla overtones made me think of dessert rather than party snacks, defining this one for me as being an ideal cocktail after hours, in a quiet, romantic atmosphere. I have reached the end, so it’s Apple, Ginger and Spice to polish off the night. Back to party aromas and a great crisp and light flavour. The apple fruit was subtle and a good cut of ginger highlighted the crisp apple, then a nice surprise ensued – a touch of spice after bite that was great. The verdict for Vodka O – Party On! Vodka O! Party On!

MELBOURNE BAND HUSKY THIS MONTH RELEASED ITS SECOND ALBUM – RUCKERS’S HILL – SOPHISTICATED RECORD THAT IS BOTH DELICATE AND TENDER, BUT ALSO HAS AN ENDEARING SIMPLICITY AND KEEN SENSE OF FUN.

husky THE SECOND HALF OF 2013 WAS A PERIOD OF FEVERISH SONG WRITING FOR HUSKY GAWENDA. THE RESULT OF THAT TIME OF INTENSE CREATIVITY IS RUCKERS HILL, THE SECOND ALBUM FOR THE MUCH LOVED BAND, HUSKY (HUSKY GAWENDA - GUITAR & VOCALS, GIDEON PREISS - KEYBOARDS, EVAN TWEEDIE – BASS, AND ARRON LIGHT – HUSKY’S NEW DRUMMER). HUSKY AND GIDEON SAT DOWN WITH DARREN HOUSE AND CAROL SHERIDAN TO TALK ABOUT THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF MAKING A RECORD.

hile the songs for Husky’s new album, Ruckers Hill, sometimes came in a rush, there were times when Husky Gawenda had to search for inspiration in the most unlikely places. He would walk around his local neighbourhood in Melbourne’s Collingwood and down to the Merri Creek recording snippets of ideas and poems and word plays on his phone. He even borrowed a 1970s Hermes portable typewriter from his father, to try and make the ideas come. At one stage he would drop into a Smith Street café every morning for coffee and while there he would read Leonard Cohen’s 1966 novel Beautiful Losers in tiny portions. The café had it in its bookshelf; he would take it out, read a page or two and put it back for the next morning. The record took a long time to make, through 2013 and into this year. There were those periods of intensely creative song writing but

W

there were also times when the writing came slowly. “The first album was hard but this was really hard. Albums are difficult to make” said Husky. “A lot of people have talked about the second album curse and stuff like that, but I don’t believe in that. I just think that albums are hard to make. The first album was hard and this album was hard.”

“They are tough because you don’t have many shots in life to make records. You might make one record in your career, we have made two, and we might make a couple more, who knows? You want it to be great and to create something that you think is great, is hard. There is a lot of stuff that goes into it, from the initial writing phase to getting the

band sounding great before you go into the studio, all of the steps that it takes to create a piece of work is hard,” added Gideon When asked what the hardest thing about making the their second record was, Husky responded, “I think the hardest thing was just getting to the point where we had a bunch of songs that we wanted to represent us at this point, the right songs, and that was maybe a little bit harder than on the last one. “On the first record, we were going from nothing to something whereas this time, we had a bit of a sound that people considered the Husky sound, and we also had a sound that we considered our sound, so it was difficult to know what the next step was. “You want it to be different, (but) you don’t want it to be completely different, you want it to be a progression. In the end, it naturally is a progression, you don’t have to force that, it’s going to be different because everything has changed.” But having written a lot of songs, not everything can make it to the album, a song might be

great, but it just might not fit in with the other tracks chosen, so how does a band decide on which songs make it and which ones are cut? Gideon responded, “We dealt with that a lot on this record. We wrote a lot of songs for this album, a lot more than the first album and the concept of the album, or the consistency throughout the album, was constantly changing. “That was part of what was difficult, trying to find those songs that created a sound, a complete and defined record. What that meant also was a lot of songs that, on their own, were really great songs - in fact, some of my favourite songs that Husk had written - we had to let go of because they didn’t fit in to the songs that represent us now.” The record, named after a spot in Northcote, Melbourne, was recorded in several Melbourne and Sydney studios, as well as at Husky’s home in Collingwood and at the tranquil and inspiring Echidna Studios on Melbourne’s semi-rural fringe. “It was a simple studio, in WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

“A lot of really great songs - in fact, some of my favourite songs that Husk had written - we had to let go of because they didn’t fit in to what was going to be the songs that represent us now” a beautiful spot in the hills overlooking the Yarra Valley, with Fella the dog and two goats roaming around the garden,” explained Husky. “We dreamed the record into life out there.’’ Having laid down the tracks,

there can always be the temptation to over-tweak the mix, something Husky said the band had previously experienced. “We had that experience on our first record, in that case we didn’t have a label or any sort of team

around us, we were doing it in isolation all ourselves, so it was even harder to know when it was done. There were no deadlines, all we knew is that we were making a record and it could be finished any time. As the person making it, you never ever feel like it’s absolutely finished. We are also perfectionists, and especially for perfectionists, you are never going to get to a point where you think it is perfect. But you have to know when it’s time to let it go and send it onto the mixer.” Gideon, Evan and Husky and later, Arron - worked on the songs, refining and deepening their sound and their resonance. The feel of Ruckers Hill came from playing live so often and always wanting the show to be bigger and better and bolder. “We wanted songs that would take the show to another level.” Ruckers Hill is a sophisticated record that is both delicate and tender, but also has an endearing simplicity and keen sense of fun. At a base level, it is great to sing along with. At a critical level, it is a record that advances Husky’s song writing and the band’s musicianship to dynamic new levels. The band’s first album was layered but this one is much more stripped back. “I think we have a tendency to overload our songs with layers and textures and parts, we are often going the other way, trying to really find the beauty and the magic of the song so that it’s not about all the flowery things. “We have done that a bit on this album, a little bit more than on the last album probably. It probably has fewer layers at times and it creates something a little bit more direct for the listener and possibly immediate and I like that about it. I like the way that our first album was layered, but I do like that about the new record.” Gideon is also the band’s producer and admits that sometimes the lines of being band member and producer can blur. “We do everything on the record,

including writing, performing, producing and organising everything, so, yes, the lines can get blurred, but I think ultimately, we take on all those extra responsibilities because that’s what we want, we love that. I guess you have got to be accountable, so you find a way to make those decisions. Sometimes that means leaning on other people as well and asking advice from other people, but we find a way to make those calls, we do it together.” Many artists have influenced

Husky’s style, such as America, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and he was introduced to these by his parents when he was young. “It was played in our homes and I thought it was cool. I always thought America was cool, I always thought all the folk artists and the great singer song writers that they played were cool, I always loved The Beatles. “A lot of those bands are bands that I still love, I still listen to them and I am constantly finding new WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

things about their music that I really love. We were lucky to grow up on that stuff. “It’s funny, I thought a lot of things about my parents, my dad in particular - maybe it’s a father/son thing - I don’t think it anymore, but growing up, I thought a lot of things about him were not cool. But not the music, he was into good music.” Husky and Gideon are looking forward to touring Ruckers Hill, in what will be their biggest Australian tour ever but admit that it will be a bit daunting. “Having not toured for a while, well not much anyway, it’s – well, you are not road hardened. We spent a lot of time touring the first record and you get used to it, you get hardened, you get into the groove. It’s a little bit daunting but mostly it’s exciting. Having new songs to play is always great. “On top of that, I feel that these songs are really good ones to play live, they feel good to sing and they feel good to play. There is some more upbeat material on this album that I don’t think we really have ever had before which is also really nice for the dynamic of a live show. I’m looking forward WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

to that,” said Husky. Ruckers Hill was mixed by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Band of Horses) except for the single I’m Not Coming Back, which was mixed by Peter Katis (The National), while a clutch of

songs were co-produced over many sessions with storied Sydney producer, Wayne Connolly.

Husky – Ruckers Hill is out now through Liberation. Saint Joan is the album’s second single. www.liberation.com.au

healthy living A golden spice that packs a health punch f you like cooking Indian inspired dishes, you may have used a gold coloured spice known as turmeric. Used commonly to add flavour to curries and salads, it can also be used as a means of preserving food or utilised as colour dye. But did you know that turmeric has been consumed for medicinal purposes in India and China for centuries? More than 4000 scientific and scholarly articles have demonstrated the multitude of health-promoting benefits the spice can provide, and these benefits are centred on the active ingredient in turmeric known as curcumin. One of the most impressive health benefits of curcumin is its ability to reduce inflammation commonly associated with arthritis and other disease states. Other benefits of curcumin include the lowering of bad LDL cholesterol in our bodies, the suppression of certain symptoms associated with Type 2 diabetes, and the support of our immune system through antioxidant effects. This is significant for Australians as, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, some of the most prevalent conditions throughout the population include those of a cardiovascular, osteoarthritic, and diabetic nature. One hurdle in benefiting from turmeric ingestion is curcumin’s poor absorbtion into the body. In fact, one of the key challenges most commonly faced by researchers is how to ensure that curcumin is absorbed properly in order to provide the most

significant therapeutic benefits. Because of the recognised benefits of this spice, scientists have persevered and found a solution. In an Australian first, a new method of manufacturing turmeric has led to a highly bioavailable product, which allows curcumin to be absorbed into the body up to 27 times the normal rate. In this way, the anti-inflammatory power of the otherwise traditional Indian spice is maximised, allowing the ingredients to assist in the reduction of inflammation

in the body. This is great news for the 28 per cent of Australians who suffer from arthritis. While we commonly see arthritis as a condition that affects the older age brackets of our population, the truth is arthritis affects many younger people as well. In fact, a study conducted in 2011 demonstrated that 15 per cent of the total population that made up the 16-34 age brackets were affected by arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. The prevalence of the condition did not differ between males and females, and the three most commonly reported arthritic afflictions were back pain problems, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. In the future, Theracurmin may potentially assist in reducing inflammation associated with arthritis for Australians of all ages.

be your best How to power through your day like a champion hen was the last time you felt like you were operating at optimum capacity and with full energy levels? If you have been feeling tired or fatigued lately, you may be suffering from low levels of Ubiquinol in your body. Ubiquinol, the active, antioxidant form of CoQ10 that is found naturally in the cells of our bodies including the heart and the liver, helps to provide energy for them to function effectively as well as helps soak up oxidative stress and free radicals. Ubiquinol is the active of two unique forms of CoQ10, the other being Ubiquinone, which is the inactive form. While both forms of CoQ10 have been shown to assist in supporting energy production, it has been demonstrated that Ubiquinol is the more effective of the two. The benefits of Ubiquinol vary. Not only has it been shown that it helps to maintain a healthy heart and vascular system, it also assists in powering your cells by helping them to convert energy, may support healthy LDL cholesterol levels in healthy people, and is essential for antioxidant protection (the compounds that help fight free radical damages and other nasties). While these benefits are all promising, there is some not so good news as well. Studies have shown that as we age, the natural levels of CoQ10 in our body decreases beginning at around the age of 30. In addition, the older we get, the harder it becomes to convert Ubiquinone to Ubiquinol, which is the form it is required in to help power our cells. While Ubiquinol is found in foods such as spinach, sardines,

and red meat, the quantities required to replace the natural levels of it in our bodies from these foods is substantial, and well outside the daily recommended intake for adults. CoQ10 has been the focus of 1000 of scientific studies over the years. Most recently, Japanese scientists have established that Ubiquinol in its stable and active

form will help support energy production. Following ten years of research these scientists have developed Ubiquinol in a form that is easily bioavailable and stable, now available in Australia. Since then, a number of significant studies around Ubiquinol have produced varying results. For example, a study in 2013 demonstrated that supplementation of Ubiquinol into the daily diet of athletes enhanced the peak power production in their bodies. Another study working with patients suffering from heart failure demonstrated the effectiveness of Ubiquinol in comparison to the non-active form of CoQ10 known as Ubiquinone. It was demonstrated that those taking Ubiquinol actually

ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S BEST MOTOR RACING EVENTS, THE SHANNONS NATIONALS, WRAPPED UP THE YEAR AT THE PHILLIP ISLAND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT. WORDS/PHOTOS: ANDREW BROWNE ound seven of the Shannon’s Nationals was held recently at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, a 4.4km track famous for hosting great racing events like the Moto GP and the V8 Supercars. The Shannon’s Nationals has a range of racing categories such as the Dial Before You Dig Australian Super Six Touring Car Series, Kerrick Sports Sedan Series, Kuhmo Tyres Australian V8 Touring Cars, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Radical Australia Cup, Australian Formula 3 Championship, Australian Sports Racer Series and the Australian Superkarts. the championship. Seven drivers in the 2014 championship were classed as rookies and all of them had something to prove as they competed for Australian motorsports oldest continually awarded prize - the CAMS Gold Star. In race one Simon Hodge grabbed the victory, while

penalties were handed out to Chris Anthony - who had a rear wing height infringement and had to start at the back of the grid in race two. Race two was a battle between Ben Gersekowski and Simon Hodge. Simon just clipped the right rear tyre of Gersekowski’s F3 and lost a bit of his front wing,

which made a lot of impact on the downforce and cost him the race. Gersekowski took victory, while Chelsea Angelo won the national class and was second outright in race two. Simon Hodge won race three and the victory for the weekend overall. The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series was impressive to watch. Sports Sedans are the fastest cars with roofs in Australia, with 800hp V8s or rotary engines, lightweight cars with big wings and big tyres, and, well, you get the idea! Darren Hossack won race one and started on pole position for race two. Race two was redflagged only a few seconds after the green flag was dropped following a three- car accident involving the championship contenders, Hossack, Steven Tamasi and Tony Ricciardello. As a result, race two was declared a no result. Race three had more thrilling racing with speeds in excess of 180km/h, which is 5km/h faster than a V8 supercar. Thomas Randle won the race, while Michael Robinson won the weekend overall. The Dial Before Your Dig Australian Super Six Touring Cars Series featured a grid of 29 cars. This series is entertaining, with the traditional Holden versus Ford battle thrilling the crowd. Gavin Ross held a narrow championship lead, and increased this with a win in race one. The Fords pushed hard trying to compete against the Holdens, with some Ford drivers pushing too hard, resulting in a lot of driving off-roading. Ross went on to break the lap record during his clean sweep of the weekend. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

dining out A gastronomic wonderland that doesn’t break the bank Dined by New Shanghai - Third floor, Emporium Centre - Shop 323, Lonsdale St Melbourne +61 3 9994 9386 www.newshanghai.com.au rodijee was invited to experience Asian cuisine sensations at the recently opened New Shanghai restaurant in Melbourne’s latest and possibly greatest designer fashion precinct – Emporium. Nestled into a prominent position in the corner of Emporium’s main restaurant locale, New Shanghai looked and smelt inviting. Passing the dumpling preparation area, which is on show to all, gave me a confidence in the standard and dedication used to create our meal. The surgical masked chefs busily toying with dumpling dough made it look so easy to make these little wonders. As we were shown to our table, I tried to take in as many patrons’ dinners as I could for reference to the menu later. The one I made particular note of was braised beef served on noodle soup that two young ladies were happily engrossed in. Our waiter, Marvin, showed us to our table and then introduced us to the manager, Jerry. They ran this fine restaurant in an efficient welcoming manner that made everyone comfortable as well as ensuring all our needs were met at the right time. I left the choice of fare to Marvin, who quickly qualified what items were to our palate. The entrees were three platters of dumplings:

• New Shanghai pan fried pork bun – a great alternative to regular dumplings and the pan frying of the tasty pastry wrapped pork added that lovely smoky taste and aroma. • Prawn wonton tossed with peanut butter, red chilli oil and spice – wow! These were spectacular. Not your usual ingredients but they all worked together so well. I will be

• Rainbow beef (deep fried shredded beef tossed with sweet and sour sauce). All of us agreed that this was the standout main of the night. Full of flavour and prepared in a manner that made it shine as a true New Shanghai favourite. Don’t be swayed by the term “sweet and sour”, as this dish

in no way resembled the Sweet and Sour sauces of the 70s.

• Deep fried crispy skin chicken with special garlic and chilli sauce. If you are a fan of Asian style crispy skin dishes then this is a must. The chicken was moist and tender and the skin true to the menu description. The garlic and chilli sauce was simple yet perfect to the dish. After having my fill, I scanned the menu to see if other proteins were treated in the same manner. I am happy to say the part of my next visit to New Shanghai will be to try the crispy skin king prawns. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Marvin also provided a perfect accompaniment to refresh the palate – steamed seasonal vegetables consisting of tiny tender bok choy and luscious mushrooms, served with oyster sauce. This was fit for an emperor. As you can imagine, we were all well and truly satisfied by now, but Marvin insisted we try a little bit of a dessert that he assured me we would love. OK, Marvin was right, a beautiful bowl of shaved ice with traditional seasonal fruits and a touch of ice cream ensured a fitting end to a beautiful dinner. Every fruit just popped with flavour and the shaved ice refreshed and prepared your mouth for the next spoonful The New Shanghai is great! I can highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys fine Asian cuisine. Believe it or not – this gastronomic wonderland can be enjoyed without breaking the bank; in fact, I will go as far to say that it is exceptionally good value.

KATE PECK IT SOUNDS LIKE A DREAM JOB, BUT BEING AMBASSADOR FOR THE AUSTRALIAN MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX AT PHILLIP ISLAND ISN’T ALL ABOUT LOOKING GLAM, COCKTAILS AND SHAKING HANDS. KATE PECK IS A TELEVISION PRESENTER, MODEL, NATIONAL YOUTH AMBASSADOR FOR MYER AND LOVER OF EXTREME SPORTS. SHE HAS GRACED CATWALKS IN LONDON, DUBAI AND TOKYO FOR LUXURY BRANDS, INTERVIEWED WORLD-CLASS MUSIC ACTS AND HOSTED RED CARPET EVENTS. KATE HAD JUST LANDED IN MELBOURNE, AFTER A MUCH DELAYED FLIGHT FROM SYDNEY, AND SAT DOWN WITH DARREN HOUSE TO DISCUSS HER ROLE AS AMBASSADOR FOR THE AUSTRALIAN MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX 2014 AND HER HECTIC LIFESTYLE, JUST PRIOR TO HER HEADING DOWN TO PHILLIP ISLAND FOR THE WEEKEND.

IS THIS A TYPICAL DAY IN YOUR LIFE WHERE YOU FLY INTERSTATE AND YOU HAVE TO GET ANOTHER FLIGHT TO BAIRNSDALE? It kind of has become a typical day for me, not the Bairnsdale part, but the back and forth to Melbourne and Sydney, Myer keeps me pretty busy doing that sort of stuff. And coming down for press for the MotoGP as well, there is just so much to do, but it’s great because Melbourne and Sydney are so close. It takes longer to get to the airport half the time than it does to fly between the two cities. Things have become really busy in the past year to year and a half, this is now becoming fairly typical.

mum are very big into their bikes and travelling, I think I found my passion for motor cycles via them much to my mother’s horror! It’s a passion of mine, unfortunately, and I can’t change that. That’s why this is such a perfect opportunity for me and because I was already in the Grand Prix family from being the face of Formula 1, it just seemed like a no-brainer.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? I am from Melbourne but I have lived in Sydney for six years on and off, I went to school in Caulfield. It’s always really nice to come down to Melbourne because I get to see my Mum and brother and family, any excuse will do and I am down here like a flash. PART OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THIS ROLE IS THAT YOU HAVE A BIKE LICENCE. Yes, that was no problem, because I have had my bike licence for about six years. My dad and step WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING TO GO ON THE BACK OF MICK DOOHAN’S BIKE? Yes, I already got to do that.

It was just unbelievable. It’s insane; you just don’t even know what to do with yourself. You are just hanging on for dear life, because if you let go, or just even loosen your grip, that it’s, you are just thrown off the track and into shrubbery. It’s a really proper terrifying experience but it is so thrilling. It gives you an understanding of what the riders go through when they do so many laps all around the world and why they have to go through so much training. It is defying the laws of nature – how they do their turning, their braking, everything about it is quite amazing. It was a pretty special little event for me. YOU HAVE BEEN SPONSORED BY HARLEY AND ARE NOW BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP WITH BMW, BUT HOW DID YOU GET INTO RIDING THESE BIG BIKES? They (Harley) were fantastic, a really nice crew, but I really want to do the adventure side of motorcycle riding. I started on a scooter and then my dad said, “We are going to Africa, we would love you to come, but you have to learn how to ride a much larger motorcycle.” So, I had to learn how to ride a bike in about a month and then just take off in Africa with all my gear on the

back, into chaos and mayhem that is driving in Africa on a really large bike. From a 100cc scooter to a 650cc endure bike – it was a bit of a step up. HOW LONG WAS THAT TRIP? It was just over two months. It was awesome and I was over there doing some charity work at the same time, everything about that trip was fantastic. The culture is so bizarre and everyone over there is so interesting and the different cultures within South Africa and Namibia and Botswana as well, it was a really cool trip. That started my passion for motorcycles – I was sold – it’s me – and now it’s become this obsession that I can’t get rid of. A MOTOR BIKE TREK THROUGH SOUTH AFRICA IS NOT PROBABLY SOMETHING YOU WOULD ASSOCIATE WITH MODELLING. No, it would be quite confusing to people who see me and think, ‘she is a model, but she is also on MTV, but she is also associated WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

with adventure and motorcycles,’ so I am a little bit of a mixed bag, but it’s nice to have variety in life. Currently I am somehow managing to balance it all, it’s working for the time being, but who knows, maybe one might take over and I will have to drop something, but so far, so good. IF ONE WAS TO TAKE OVER, DO YOU HAVE A PREFERENCE AS TO WHICH IT WOULD BE?

I have done modelling for quite a while, I feel like I have kind of ticked that box to a degree and I am only just getting into the adventure motor cycle side, there is a lot of potential there. I also love MTV and the music side, the pop culture side as well, so it’s a tricky one. I currently cannot tell you what my preference is. HOW DID YOU FIND THE TRANSITION FROM MODEL

TO TELEVISION PRESENTER? I am comfortable in front of the camera, a lot more work goes into being a television presenter than a model I have found. To work for MTV, I have to be across everything, I have to be across music, pop culture, and film, everything that goes on in the MTV world. There is a lot to do and it’s definitely a challenge in that aspect, but otherwise I think it was a pretty natural transition going from one camera – still, to a rolling camera. It helps being on Foxtel as opposed to free to air as with Foxtel you can kind of slide under the radar a little bit. YOU HAVE A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT IN THE STUDIO, OR AN EVENING WITH MYER BUT AT PHILLIP ISLAND YOU GET BLOWN ALL OVER THE PLACE, IT MIGHT RAIN, BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO LOOK GLAM. You just have to roll with the punches and pray for the best sometimes. I am not quite sure what to expect down there, but I am hoping for good weather and it’s a great environment to be in. There is such a good energy and everyone is there to celebrate the same thing, everyone is really into bikes; they are passionate about them and everyone is on the same level. It’s very relaxed down there, nobody is pretentious and it’s just a really nice environment to be in. YOU ARE PROBABLY THE FIRST PERSON TO BE THE AMBASSADOR FOR BOTH THE BIKES AND THE CARS, SO YOU HAVE A BIT OF AN IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT?

“It would be quite confusing to people who see me and think, ‘she is a model, but she is also on MTV, but she is also associated with adventure and motorcycles” Yes, in that aspect I know what we are talking about and what media we are dealing with and just how the days play out and which international guests we need to welcome and take care of and what the events are going to be

like. I understand how fast paced it is going to be as well, but this one might not be quite as fast paced as Formula 1, that is really full on. WHAT WAS the FORMULA 1 GIG LIKE? That was the start of my career, my television career and my career in the media, that was the platform that I needed to take everything to the next level and to get recognition from the people I needed to be recognised by, including MTV. Without that gig I wouldn’t have got MTV, without MTV I wouldn’t have got everything else I have been doing. It was a real learning experience too because I had never done anything like that before and it was full on. There was a lot I had to learn about Formula 1 and dealing with the media and all kind of international guests and brands, there is a lot to take in. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

Because it is such a global event there are a lot of eyes watching you so you need to tread very carefully. I think I did ok, I really enjoyed myself. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT MYER. I am an ambassador for Myer, and it involves hosting lots of their fabulous events like store openings and when guests come into town to promote brands – the Spring racing carnival as well – I judge fashions on the field which is really exciting. I will be there for all four of the cup days which is great, I will be taking part in the spring, summer and autumn fashion launches too – I will walk the runway for those shows which is always fabulous with Chris (Smith) and Jen (Hawkins) on the runways. I love doing catwalk; I am right in my element. CAN YOU GIVE ME THREE TIPS FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? 1. Persistence pays. 2. Be prepared to work hard – nothing comes easy these days. 3. Remain positive and don’t let ego get in the way of anything. WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

During this time, she performed the works of leading choreographers, while steadily increasing her duties as a rehearsal mistress and choreographer. In 2006, drawing on her extensive training in contemporary East-Indian dance, Neelanthi signed on to perform the role of Oceanne for Cirque du Soleil’s Dralion. She was appointed Dance Captain for the show and gained valuable experience coaching and training acrobats, actors, and dancers. But a role like this does not come overnight; it was years after applying to Cirque du Soleil that she took up a performing role within the company. “I was surprised to get the call three years later, that came out of the blue, but as I learned a bit more about the company over the years I realized that my story was not unique. There had even been people who received calls ten years

Saltimbanco, leading the team as Working in contemporary dance for so many years you end up wearing a lot of hats, you end up coaching and teaching and collaborating and promoting. I ran my own productions and projects and I even founded a small dance company in Montreal and had learned that aspect, that management side of the business as well as continuing education over the years and mentorship with other dance companies with company managers and learning that administrative and logistical side. “I began as an assistant and then I took over. I was able to learn the show, grow close to the artists and the structure of Cirque du Soleil which is quite unique. When I took over I felt that I had the information necessary to handle the huge job that it is.” The cast of TOTEM comprises the Artistic Director through the end 45 performing artists from 16 of 2012, and after a few months at countries—Belarus, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, the head of Michael Jackson THE Germany, Italy, Japan, Moldova, IMMORTAL World Tour, Neelanthi joined TOTEM, where she continues Mongolia, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

United Kingdom and United States. A lot of different languages are spoken and the performers come from very different training backgrounds. There are traditional circus artists, Olympic athletes, musicians, singers, dancers, actors and clowns who all have very specific training methodology. How does an artistic director work with such a diverse group? “My job is to maintain that quality, make sure that the original creator’s intent is being honoured and respected with integrity, and then, with the artists I am working with, I want to keep them inspired and motivated whilst constantly allowing them to grow and evolve as artists within the structure of the show. It’s a balancing act. Practically, I am onstage with them during training, I watch shows and take notes and work with the artists. There are a lot of logistical and administrative duties in collaboration with our headquarters in Montreal, so I spend time in the office. All of those different backgrounds are all mashed together in one tent and we have to create a show out of that and we have to make sure that the experience the audience gets is a very high quality and seamless show every night.” Training and performing involves a gruelling schedule and is very rough on the body. While the performers are highly trained and incredibly fit, accidents can and do happen, but there are no understudies – every performer is on stage every night. “There are no extra performers but some of the artists will have alternate roles or they will rotate within. They can add an element that night or switch off and rotate into a more difficult position, but every single one of them is on stage. We also have an act in reserve, it WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

is with the same artists who are already doing something in the show, and they will have to do an additional duty. It’s quite a welloiled machine now; Cirque has been doing this for a long time.” Written and directed by Robert Lepage, TOTEM is a fascinating look at the evolution of mankind, tracing our incredible journey from our original amphibian state to our ultimate quest for flight. Along the way, it also explores our dreams and infinite potential, and the ties that bind us both to our collective animal origins and to the species that share the planet with us. The visual environment of TOTEM is an organic world, a marsh lined with reeds near an island (the stage), on which images are projected. The images are drawn from nature and were shot for the production in various parts of the world, including Iceland, Hawaii

and Guatemala. Even the images of boiling lava were filmed by Image Content Designer, Pedro Pires. Through the magic of these moving images it becomes a virtual swamp, a river source, a marsh, a lake, an ocean, a volcanic island, a pond and a starry sky. The production focusses on extremely high skill sets and very unique acts, and allows the audience to feel very much a part of it. Neelanthi has been with TOTEM since November last year. As with directors of other Cirque du Soleil shows, she was chosen for the role based on her qualifications and the specifics of the style of production. Of her role within the Cirque family, Neelanthi said, “I was given TOTEM and I am really happy, it is a very unique show, it is a very musical show, it is a very colourful and happy show.”

london calling No matter what you want to see or do, London delivers his summer in London has been a delight; perfect weather, outdoor swimming, fine food and endless theatre. VIRAL was the title of the production I was blessed to work on over this summer, under the guidance of the spirited director Joel Scott of Goat & Monkey Productions (he is also one of the co-founders of Punchdrunk Productions – read all about that company in Prodijee #21). We - as a company – created an immersive theatrical event, we devised and developed through various workshops for six solid weeks in order to create a truly epic, one of a kind piece of theatre. Twenty-five of us aged between 17-26 worked with Joel Scott (right). A further 75 actors worked with three other directors. More than 900 audience members experienced this theatrical event that culminated in a chilling finale of a one hundred strong company of actors exploding with anger, it was a truly exhilarating experience for all. Working on VIRAL I met and worked with some exceptionally talented and fun individuals, from the effusive director Joel Scott to the likes of the British actress Ellie Hope Herdman (far right, top), who stars in the film The Beat Beneath My Feat, which debuts at the much acclaimed Raindance Film Festival next month. Now, by the end of this production and a grueling yet fun six weeks, I was craving some time away from London, but to my surprise, it turned out I didn’t need to leave London to get it… To escape the hustle and bustle I just needed to head to Harrow –

let’s face it, when the sun is out there is no better place to be. The Grim’s Dyke Hotel (far right, middle), is a delightful place, full of grandeur, beauty and set in 40 acres of manicured gardens, ponds and woodland. Built in 1872 and once home to W.S Gilbert of Gilbert & Sullivan, the opera legend. It now operates as a hotel and is sometimes used as a filming location, some classics that have been shot here include The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and also Dr Who. utter beauty of the gardens and hotel itself. At only £99 a night – when booking in advance – including a three-course dinner and their award winning breakfast for two people this place is a MUST and an absolute bargain. The dining experiences in the Gilbert Dining Room are exceptional, everything from their beautifully baked breads to their petit fours are prepared in their kitchens from scratch, all of the highest quality and unreservedly delicious. So you too can have your own Downton Abbey experience for very little expense. Through the year, the Grim’s Dyke has some incredible events. All December the hotel carries a Christmas theme, from cracker pulling Murder Mystery Dinners to Carol singing – there is fun to be had by the whole family. I only had one evening here but it was all I needed to feel truly refreshed and ‘away from it all’. I will be returning SOON! I am now back in London and moving to a much quicker beat. Last night I saw Ballyturk, starring Cillian Murphy at the National; tonight I am seeing the legend that is Lenny Kravitz (bottom) over at the Roundhouse and the following week Australia’s very own Caroline Reid, aka Pam Ann (top, left). London glams up and down rainers are not something you normally would expect to see on the runway, but at London Fashion Week anything goes, including Burberry Prorsum’s trainers in bright jigsaw colours. This year’s fashion trends could not be put into any one box, just about every box was ticked. Bright colours, massive textures and patterns adorned the runways. There were clutch bags the shape of giant pencil cases personalised with leather stickers and pleated skirts. Bermuda shorts and big slouchy hats made an appearance along with some 60’s power psychadelia prints. New rope adornment peps up the ever favourite

nautical trend and you can expect to be seeing a lot of striped polo necks hit the stores soon. The denim jacket never goes out of fashion, in one form or another, this year’s parade had them nipped in at the waist and showing a pop of colour with bright Perspex collars. Laser-cut leather was also on show with the leather hat set to become a cult buy, but if teamed correctly, you will be able to make a fashion statement with leather track pants. There was underwear on the outside, underwear on the inside and underwear… well… non-existent, really. The whole week has been very reminiscent of the 60s with massive focus on big bold patterns, bright colours and a lot of sheer feminine fabrics and lines.

Wella at London Fashion Week BACKSTAGE AT LONDON FASHION WEEK WITH EUGENE SOULEIMAN, GLOBAL CREATIVE DIRECTOR, WELLA PROFESSIONALS CREATING THE HAIR LOOK FOR ANTONIO BERARDI S/S ‘15

The look: Tough Romance

Get the look:

The hair look at the Antonio Berardi S/S ’15 show was a beautiful exercise in blended textures, with a hint of Japanesque. “I took my inspiration from the beautiful fabrics and themes in the collection, where Antonio had mixed Kimono style florals with Military sharpness, said Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Wella Professionals. “I wanted to interpret these qualities via the hair, so I created a sleek, graphic panel through the top of the head which was completely flat and shiny, then blended this with a loose, looped ponytail at the back of the head. “To add a hint of romance, just before the show, I teased out pieces of hair to give a soft, floaty effect which dramatically caught the light and added graceful movement as the girls walked down the catwalk.”

1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner

2. Rough dry the hair by blasting with a blow dryer, then spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz on the roots and blast again to get a textured lift 3. Next, run straightening irons through the hair, this will give a sharper, graphic quality to the hair as well as the heat drawing out any remaining moisture. 4. Section out the top middle panel of hair, then starting from the back of the crown, spray Wella Professionals Super Set hair spray close to the roots, then pull back with a fine tooth comb, making sure you keep the tension in place.

5. Once the entire panel has been sprayed and is pulled back, dry the hair with a diffuser to create a perfectly flat finish. Clip in place.

• Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray •Wella Professionals Super Set Finishing Spray

6. Brush the remaining hair with a soft bristle brush to create lightness, then gather the hair back in to a loose, low pony tail. Tie with elastic, then loop the pony tail over itself and tie again.

Wella Professionals is available in professional salons across the world. For more information, visit www. wella.com.

7. Next, secure the top loop to the head, which will create a soft, rolled finish to the side sections.

The animal and floral prints bring natural voluptuousness from exotic locations, while the navy stripes and the deep blue’s allude to the brightness of spots lapped by crystal-clear water. Details return throughout the collection, adding a dash of personality to each swimsuit series with multicoloured stones in the straps, rings that accentuate the nude effect and metallic pieces that adorn the more minimalist designs. In the lingerie, the combinations of lace with print or satin silk and the optical effects that reveal the skin beneath make summer 2015 one of the brand’s most sensual.

n Australia, the tradition of Halloween is starting to become an annual event – previously ignored here – more and more we are celebrating a tradition that most of us don’t really understand. So, what is Halloween and where has it come from? Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain which was a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival frequently involved bonfires as it was believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which also then attracted bats. The history of Halloween has evolved with more and more countries embracing the holiday

I

and participating in activities such as trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting ‘haunted houses’ and carving jack-olanterns. The event has become much less about ghosts and ghouls and the sombre pagan ritual to a day of merriment and celebration with costumes and

lollies being a major part of the festivities. But love it or hate it, if you have children, as this event is gaining popularity in Australia, it is going to be more and more difficult to tell your children ‘no’ when they ask to go to a party or to go trickor-treating.

So, why not embrace it, get in on the fun. Join in with the children as they dress up as their favourite character and fill their bags and baskets with lollies. Throw away your inhibitions and objections and just kick back and have some fun. But when you have those children, who have probably been on sugar highs, all tucked up for the night, why not have your own celebration. Invite your friends around, light up the bonfire (if you are in an area that allows this of course) and use this date as an excuse for a party. Make sure you have those pumpkins carved out nice and early, they do take quite a while to do. Light candles inside each of them to create spooky atmosphere. Fake spiders webs are available at craft and party stores (unless you have plenty of your own real ones) to drape around. Food, well, that’s easy – barbeque sausages on

the bonfire – or just finger food – dips etc – it can be as simple or special as you like. But what about drinks? Drinks are always a good way to add to a theme. Here are some suggestions for drinks using Rosso Antico and Amaro Montenegro. The Amaro Montenegro has an intense, citrusy flavour and is full of delightful herb aromas that give it its unique and unmistakable character. It displays early botanical scents of orange peel, fresh not dried coriander, red cherry, and pekoe tea cucumber. Rosso Antico is a lightly fortified wine with the appeal of simplicity and elegance. It is great when poured neat or on ice with a slice of orange or lemon but it is also a perfect base for creating unique and unforgettable cocktails.

just sayin’ Be it small, bulbous or flabby, keep your butt out of my face... m I a prude? Ihope not, I tend to think I’m not, I feel that there is always a place for a bit of raunchiness, a bit of flirting, a bit of… well, anything really. I so desperately wanted my column this month to be something positive, something happy or even fun, but this has been playing on my mind for quite a while now, so I am back on my soap box – whinging if you like. I have come to the end of my tether with the butt, booty, ass, bottom, whatever you want to call it, it’s everywhere! We all have one; they are a very important part of our anatomy. Some are big, some are small, some are flat, some are bulbous, some are taught and some are flabby, but whatever shape or size they are, they are ours. Many a woman looks at a guy as he walks in front of her, eyeing off tight buns, but even more men admire the curvaceous bottom of a lovely lady in a nice pair of jeans or a tight pencil skirt. Many ladies even put a bit more of a wiggle into their walk when they are wearing something just that little bit more bottom defining and sexy – attraction – that’s what it’s all about. None of this offends me, it’s a bit of fun, a bit of sexiness and a bit of flirting – what does offend me is turning on my television and having an almost full screen shot of someone’s butt right in my face! I am talking twerking, booty dancing, bootylicious – whatever you want to call it – I am sick and tired of it. What makes someone think that I want their butt in my face when I turn on the television, or when I log onto Facebook and someone has put up their latest selfie of

A

their butt? I used to think that the people who were constantly taking off their clothes and showing their ‘bits’ were insecure, lacking in talent and finding that their only ‘plus’ was their naked or partially naked body. But now, some of the

‘super celebrities’ – Beyonce and Nicki Minaj – are having butt-off competitions. Now, these are people who I don’t for one minute think lack talent, but I have to wonder what it is that makes them think parading their asses around is what everyone wants to see. Personally, if I am going to one of their concerts, I am paying money to hear them sing, see them perform, but my version of performing is not watching them wiggle their butts around. The now infamous twerking by Miley Cyrus, that was scandalous at the time, is now just accepted, but she now seems to think that it is appropriate to turn up at events

“What offends me is turning on my television and having an almost full screen shot of someone’s butt right in my face! I am talking twerking, booty dancing, bootylicious – whatever you want to call it”

wearing pasties… I don’t understand it. Yes, there is the shock factor that many celebrities like to deal in, but this is just getting plain ridiculous if you ask me. If I was the one inviting Miley to my event and she turned up like that she would be shown the door straight away. After her recent behaviour and dress code, I wouldn’t even invite her in the first place. Miley isn’t the only one, Pink and

others seem to think performing wearing a pastie is acceptable, and it certainly draws attention, there is no denying that, but does it help them sell their music? Who knows, it does however keep their name out there, but I would have thought their talent would, or should, do that on its own. My main issue with all of this is our children. What are they seeing when the television is turned on?

It’s not like you can avoid it, it’s all over the news, and morning programs, afternoon programs, everywhere, and you can’t hide it from the kids. What does it teach our young girls? Acceptable behaviour? Not in my books! What does it teach our young boys? This is how girls should dress? This is what women are – sex objects that are available all the time? I go back to the question of me being a prude. After more thought, if this is the way the world is going – where this is acceptable – then I am happy to be called a prude – bring back the art of seduction, flirting and a little tease when it comes to sex, but when it comes to singing, dancing and performing, bring back talent only. Tell me what your thoughts would be if your three-year-old comes and shows you the dance she has just seen on television – “look what I have learnt to do” – and you look and see your child twerking!

MARIO ANDRETTI IN PART 2 OF OUR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MARIO ANDRETTI, THE RACING GREAT TELLS PRODIJEE’S DARREN HOUSE ABOUT WINNING THE INDIANAPOLIS 500, HIS TOUGHEST OPPONENT, AND SURVIVING A TRIPLE BACKFLIP AT 360KM/H.

YOU BROUGHT SOME UNIQUELY AMERICAN RACING TECHNIQUES TO F1. In road racing you set up a car by having everything square, but in oval racing, because you only turn one way, you apply cross weight and stagger on the car. That was something thing that I did in Formula One. Every circuit has a couple of corners that you can throw away, and some key corners where, if you get it right, you can really gain a lot of time, that is what I would set up for. I would work with my rear stagger and cross weights, but the cross-weight was not something that you could determine by putting the car on the scales and saying, “Okay, we are going to do 30lbs across the back”. I had to do it by feel, so during practise I would come in and I would ask Colin (Chapman) to do what I wanted and he would put it on the scales and say, “Oh it’s all wrong” and I would say, ‘No, no, no, don’t touch it!’ (laughs). And it worked for me. I think I had an advantage in that respect. YOU WON THE INDY 500 IN 1969. That was a very unlikely race (for WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

me to win) because the car that I was driving was not the car that we intended to race. Our main effort was with a four-wheel-drive Lotus, a very technically-advanced car with some good aerodynamic pieces on it, but it was under-designed and we started having some suspension failures. I was setting some records in practise and the right rear wheel just sheared off and I crashed heavily. There was a fire and it

destroyed the car. The team ran three cars - two with Colin Chapman and one with me and STP – and they decided to withdraw all three cars. I was left with the car that we had started the season with (but at least) I had just come away from a win in California with that car. We only had one day to practise and I put it on the front row. In the race I was competitive

and although I had overheating problems, the thing stayed together and I went on to win it. It was strange, because the years before, especially in 1966, ‘67, I had so much of an advantage with the car. I was on pole but then I had mechanical issues. Had I finished those races, those could have been two of my easiest wins anywhere. But ‘69 was such an unlikely situation because I had so many problems in practise and here we go and win it. You just don’t know. There were times later on, like in 1987, where I dominated that whole month. I was quickest every day of practise that I was on the track. I was quickest in qualifying and I led almost every lap in the race, but with 23 laps to go a valve spring broke, so go figure. DID YOU GO INTO THOSE OTHER RACES THINKING VICTORY WAS ALMOST CERTAIN, OR DID YOU HAVE NAGGING DOUBTS ABOUT RELIABILITY? The reliability factor was always in the back of your mind, especially in those days. Nowadays, the engines are only run at about 95 per cent of their potential because of the rules. Formula 1 is the same way because they are limited in the revs. In those days we extracted every

Going into this particular race, my engineer was Adrian Newey, who of course now, is with Red Bull in Formula 1, and even then I considered him to be the best ever. I felt so, so confident that I figured, ‘Today, they have to beat me’, I knew I had them all covered, and I did. I had a one-lap lead with 23 laps to go. The engine mechanics are always screaming at you, “Keep the revs

down, keep the revs down”, so I thought, ‘Okay, now I have a big lead, I am keeping the revs down’, and that’s what did me in (laughs). The engine designer, Mario Illien (Ilmor Engineering), said that I was running a rev range with bad harmonics – in other words, if I had have run 600 revs more, the chances are I would have gone to the end and won the damn thing. RACED AGAINST? Each decade there were one or two drivers who were a big thorn in my side - it was never just one individual - and it’s the usual suspects, the ones who did all the winning. When I broke into Indy Cars, AJ Foyt was the yardstick and when I broke into Formula 1, there was Jackie Stewart, but along the way there was always somebody else. The biggest satisfaction that I derived came in the first two Formula One races that I won Jackie Stewart finished second, and I thought it couldn’t be any better than that because I considered him to be the best at the time. And it was the same thing with Foyt. That is how you measure yourself. But as you go on, there are many others that come along. At that top level, there is a lot of talent that you have to deal with. YOU DROVE FOR PAUL NEWMAN. WHAT WAS HE LIKE? Paul Newman was an incredible human being, from every stand point. As the team owner, he was so incredibly supportive and passionate

about the sport. A lot of people would think he had just a superficial involvement (but) it was nothing like that. It was the opposite. I take some credit for bringing him into sport at that level, and I spent the last 12 years of my career driving for him, so we developed a friendship that was so precious to me. I have nothing but really good things to say about him. Every memory is a good one. He was a good, good man.

Enjoying retirement from racing, with a Ferrari at the Andretti Winery.

HOW DID YOU BRING HIM INTO INDY CAR? He was an owner in the CanAm series and he had wanted me to drive for him, even when I was driving Formula 1, but I could never find the time. By the early ‘80s, CanAm had pretty much gone by the wayside (so) when I came out of Formula 1, I thought he could be a great team owner in Indy Cars. I had also developed a friendship with Carl Haas, who was the Lola importer in the United States. He was also in the CanAm series and I figured maybe I could marry those two guys because that would make a formidable team, and I was able to accomplish that. That was great for me because from that point on, until the end of my career, I won 18 Indy Car races for them. YOU RACED AGAINST MANY FAMILY MEMBERS. That was one of the best moments of my career because I raced against both of my sons, Michael and Jeff, and my nephew, John. I also had Michael with me in the Newman Haas team, and we had so many podiums together. We started on the front row 10 or 12 times, which was an incredible experience. One year in Milwaukee, it was an all Andretti podium – Michael won, John came second and I finished third. I’M GUESSING THERE WERE NO FAMILY FAVOURS. I remember very clearly the first time that Michael made a competitive pass on me. We were at the Grand Prix in New York, at the Meadowlands. It was a street

We touched wheels a bit and I was somewhat upset, and then all of a sudden I said, “Oh gosh, that’s my boy” (laughs). It was sort of a double-edged sword but I was happy for him. Then, in 1986 in Portland, Oregon, we had the closest finish ever – 0.007sec

and I won, but Michael should have won. He had fuel pick-up problems on the last lap and I nudged him at the finish by about three inches (laughs). He was pissed off about it but he came around after a while because it was Father’s Day and he said, “Oh well, happy Father’s Day”. The thing that was good about us WWW.PRODIJEE.COM

being teammates was that we were totally honest with one another, not all my teammates were like that. That was great. It was good for my career towards the end, because I felt I was measuring myself up against the best. Michael was a really good driver. As good as I have ever raced against. WAS IT HARD TO COME TO THE REALISATION THAT YOU NEEDED TO STOP RACING? That was really tough. I love driving so much and I didn’t want to stop but I knew that it had to come to an end and the decision had to be made. My biggest fear was to overstay - I have seen some of my colleagues stay too long and become uncompetitive. I figure when you retire, that is what you are remembered for and I didn’t want to do that. I was fortunate enough to have stretched my career until age 54 but I felt I was competitive. I didn’t win a race in my last year but I won a race the year before, and I still felt that I had something in me, but I didn’t want to test it to that point. WERE YOUR LAST FEW LAPS AT LAGUNA SECA EMOTIONAL, OR DID YOU THINK

ONLY OF IT AFTER YOU STOPPED? It was a very emotional weekend for me because I didn’t want to be thinking, ‘Okay, this is my last race’, so I just tried to stay in denial because I didn’t want to be that depressed. But the decision was made. Even my wife said, “Why didn’t we discuss it?” and I probably should have, but I didn’t. I just wanted to make that decision myself, and then I had second thoughts - I really did. When I stepped out of the cockpit, I felt that maybe I shouldn’t have (retired) but

as more time went on, the happier I was with the decision because the memories of my career are totally positive. And the good thing was, I was able to race another three times at LeMans, which was good, and now I drive the two-seater car (promotional Indy Car). TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT THE ELITE LEVEL, YOU HAVE TO BE VERY SELFISH. HOW DID THAT AFFECT FAMILY LIFE? You had to have a lot of support around you and I have been very fortunate with my wife (Dee Ann),

we’ve done around the world have been in-conjunction with races, and I never heard any nagging from her. Stability of family life was very important to me.

she was as solid as a rock. She was very unselfish and she knew this was the only way that I could be happy. I was the selfish one; I was satisfying myself with my career. We sacrificed vacations - all the travels

DID YOUR CAREER COST YOU TIME WITH YOUR KIDS? Yes. I spent as much time (with them) as I could - I had them travelling with me all over the world at different times and so we did the best we could to keep it all together, and we did. When Michael was just a young lad, about six or seven years of age, the school teacher asked him, “What does your dad do for a living?”, and he said, “He goes to the airport and makes bread”. The reason he said that was because he used to ask me, “Hey Dad, what are you doing, where are you going?” I replied, “I’m going to the airport, I got to go make the bread (laughs)”.

BEING A DARE DEVIL, HOW IS LIFE IN RETIREMENT? There was a time when I had to condition myself to that fact that I don’t have to be so disciplined on the night before the race. Many times when I was racing, the night before you had to leave a party at 8 o’clock when everybody was beginning to have fun, and I thought someday I won’t have to do that. When it came to that point, I wished I didn’t have to stay at the parties (laughs), so there was a lot of readjustment from me. I drove for so many years and I became so used to things - life took shape and then it changed so dramatically. It took me a while to get used to it. IN 2003, AT AGE 63, YOU RETURNED TO THE INDIANAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY AND CAME CLOSE TO LOSING YOUR LIFE. One of Michael’s drivers, Tony

Kaanan, suffered a hairline fracture of the wrist in the race before Indy practise was about to start and so there was a question as to whether he could qualify the car – there was no question that he could race it because he had three weeks recovery time, and so my son, Michael, was wrestling with the idea of who would he get to qualify the car. My daughter (Barbra) said casually to Michael, “Why don’t you have Dad to do it?” Michael then looked over to me and said, “Dad, what do you think,” and I said, “Well, if we do a proper test and evaluation, certainly I’ll do it.” There was an open test and I felt right in my zone immediately. After just two runs I was right up to speed and everything felt normal – I have done so many miles at Indy. We learned a lot and at the end of the day, when I slip streamed, I was quickest at somewhere around the 225-227mph (362-365km/h) range, and so I wanted to go out and put a big lap on the board by getting a good tow. On the last run of the day I went behind Kenny Brack, and going into turn one he exploded the engine and crashed very heavily. I was only a second or two behind him and when I arrived on the scene, there was (debris) all over the place. A chunk of the safe wall, the energy absorbing walls that had just been installed, was right in the middle of the racetrack and I thought, ‘Okay, I’ll hit it, it will be no big thing’ because it is like styrofoam (but) when I hit it, it just launched the car – I did three flips backwards. According to the telemetry, I was doing 222mph (357km/h), so I started flying like an F16. It didn’t look very good from where I was watching it, but I got real lucky – we landed on the wheels and I only had a few bumps here and there. DO YOU GET TIME TO THINK ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING DURING THOSE BACKFLIPS? The only thing you are thinking is, ‘I wonder if it is really going to hurt when you finally hit something, (laughs) because I knew it was

going to land somewhere – I just didn’t know where. But it happens in a nanosecond - everything happens so quickly, but I thought I could really be hurt on this one. WHAT WERE YOUR IMMEDIATE THOUGHTS WHEN THE CAR CAME TO A REST AND YOU WERE OKAY? You thank the man upstairs. I am religious enough to do that. Something like that is strictly luck – it could have gone a different way - it could have slammed me against the wall – so many things could have happened differently but they didn’t, so it’s one of those things where you think you have dodged another bullet. I dodged quite a few of them in my life. I take nothing for granted. I know how fortunate I have been. I figured maybe this is the one, but it wasn’t.
