Winning big in 2024
In this month’s PSI Panel we continue our focus on the trends that the experts think we might see develop over the next twelve months. There are some recurring themes

redicting the future is not an easy game - hence the reason why I’ve not yet scooped the big Euromillions lottery money allowing me to drive off into the sunset in a fancy supercar. However, when you get a group of industry experts with plenty of years of experience behind them to pontificate on what the coming year might bring you do see patterns. For the last two months we’ve carried the thoughts of security insiders on the trends and technologies that will make up the sector’s 2024 schedule and the subjects you would expect to feature in their responses certainly do. Of course AI was going to be a biggie, along with the further adoption of edge technologies to ease the strain on bandwidths, and also the threats posed by cybersecurity on security systems. Most of the responses did have some focus on the area of connectivity which can come as no surprise. From the looming spectre of the upcoming (and well underway) move over to IP from PSTN lines in the UK, to the continued integration of technologies across the board, connectivity is now not only key to a successful installation, but largely expected. Anyone with children aged under 20 will know that for them there is no fathomable reason why all of their systems, from Playstations to mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets and cars cannot be linked in one form or another so that each separate technology can be accessed and integrated to work together. It’s a given for any youngster that you can play a game on a console using the Bluetooth controller connected to a smartphone, connected to mobile data while in a car playing the audio. That is the basic expectation of the next generation of domestic security buying customer that you will have to deal with in a few years. So, despite the many benefits of AI in improving the accuracy of analytic processes and the improvements in data handling through using edge technologies perhaps it is the simple connectivity and integration of systems that will have the major role going forward, but probably in the background, just because it is expected as a basic function doing its thing in the background. A bit like how we take electricity for granted but cite email or the internet as the most critical element of keeping a business operating. You don’t get either of them without power. With all of that in mind, here’s my prediction for the year ahead - connectivity and integration will be the bedrock of the security industry in 2024, but probably won’t get a lot of attention because they’re considered the most basic requirements of modern technology - just ask your kids. And that big lottery win is definitely coming my way this year.

Global recognition for UK alarm company
An alarm installer from the UK was recently presented with a global award at a dinner in Monaco. Wolverhamptonbased On Call Group was awarded the Open Globe Award at a five-star dinner attended by owners of alarm companies from throughout the world including Europe, The Middle East and Africa. The presentation was the culmination of four days of conference and banqueting in Monte Carlo organised by Johnson Controls International. The award recognises
the relationship with On Call Group and the company’s sales excellence. The award was presented to the CEO of On Call, Lee Hosking who was told his company had shown: “an outstanding level of commitment and customer service” and “an ability to overcome challenges.” The Open Globe Award was presented on behalf of Lei Schlitz, President of Global Products at Johnson Controls, who said: “Your outstanding sales performance ranks among the best of the best and your achievements place you among the top performers of the sales force in 2023.” Lee said he had been honoured to accept the award on behalf of his team of 90 employees who are based at the company’s Black Country headquarters and the sales teams and engineers working across the UK. He said: “The award came completely out of the blue and I was overjoyed to receive it on behalf of my business partner Michael Vry and all our hard-working staff. Our partnership with Johnson Controls is growing year on year and we are very grateful to be recognised in this way.”

The first four people to complete the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems; Shaun Wright, Daren Pool, Gary Flockton and John Watts recently had the honour of having their qualifications presented to them by EAL’s Managing Director Al Parkes and Dame Judith Hackitt DBE, Chair of the EAL board. When it was launched in 2020, the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Providing Electronic
Fire and Security Systems was an advancement in providing meaningful certification for the fire safety industry, but up until now, no one had successfully completed the experienced worker assessment. This is an important development for the fire safety industry as this qualification is simultaneously part of an apprenticeship in Northern Ireland and Wales, and provides a pathway for those who have experience of working in the fire sector, but did not have the chance to undertake an apprenticeship, to meet the same standard through use of this qualification as an Experienced Worker Assessment. Not only does it meet the requirements for industry recognition through the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) for a Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) Technician gold card, but also meets the baseline competency requirements as part of the review into individual competence following the tragedy at Grenfell led by Dame Judith Hackitt DBE. All four of these successful learners came through ZZEUS Training.

Decoder connects directly to a camera network using minimal cabling 3xLogic has launched the VH-DECODER-4K for setting up public view monitors or spot monitors, connecting directly to a camera network using minimal cabling. The VH-DECODER-4K converts digital data received from IP networks into video signals for display on a monitor. It decompresses the video data using the same standards as the encoder and restores the original quality and resolution of the video. he Serage SRDNC8FSAIW is an IP67 rated “turret” style 8MP dome. It is an enhanced version of their 5MP camera and is supplied with a 2.8mm wide angle lens with high sensitivity colour performance and active deterrence features. A wide range of mounting brackets and fixings are available for indoor and outdoor applications.

The camera can be simply plugged into a PoE port or supplied with a separate 12v DC feed via the secondary power connector. Once online the camera can be found with standard network search tools or using a downloadable app referenced from the Serage website. IPv4 DHCP is on by default, so once the IP address is identified, the camera can be accessed with any of the major browsers. In
Serage – SRDNC8FSAIW this case the camera would not accept the initial simple default password given in the quick guide, but a reset switch is included beneath the SD card storage cover and using this restored the camera to its factory defaults. From there the camera restarted and the browser requested a new password be entered. A strong password is forced requiring a length between 8 and 16 and at least 2 types selected from case, numeric or special characters. An option is offered to help retrieve lost passwords by entering selected security question answers, or alternatively creating a Certificate of authorization. Once the new password is entered, the browser shows the cameras sub-stream image with tabs for the three stream types at the top left of the display. Icons at the bottom left allow the stream to be stopped and restarted, image stretch and full-screen display, Image capture, digital zoom, Audio level, Alarm indicator and deterrence lighting. At the top right, beneath main selections for Live, Playback, and Remote Setting are small icons to display the AI Alarm list or the camera’s Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation etc. When used with a Serage NVR, the password management is handled during the NVR setup process so simplifies the setup.
Menu options The camera’s browser “Remote Setting” icon takes you to the camera’s configuration display with the following top-level menu options: Channel: Live, Image Control, and Video Cover. Record: Encode, Record, and Capture. Event: Setup, Alarm, Event Push. AI: Setup, Recognition, Alarm, and Statistics. Network: General, Email, FTP, RTSP, DDNS, HTTPS, IP Filter. Device: Disk, Audio, and Cloud. System: General, Multi-User, Maintenance, and Information. Up to four rectangular privacy areas can be allocated. These can be resized to suit the scene.

Whilst the video can be viewed in colour 24/7, the camera can be set up on infra-red (IR) and turns to colour when motion is detected
The range of AI detection categories (11 options) include: Face, Human & Vehicle, Perimeter Intrusion, Line Crossing, Stationary Object, Cross Counting, Heat Map, Crowd Density, Queue Length, Licence Plate, and Rare Sound. Such features are of course processor and recording system dependant so should be selected appropriately. ONVIF profiles S, G, & T are supported. An auto-reboot feature is provided but is not on by default. Time and Date are by default set to a Windows NTP reference for GMT, but daylightsaving time must be configured.
Performance The 1/2.7” high sensitivity 8MP sensor provides highly detailed images with good colour rendition. The sensor is comprised of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels (16:9) and has a stated sensitivity of 0.007lux colour. The available specification sheet didn’t show an angle of view, but measurements suggest 100°H x 53°V. In addition to the Mainstream, a Sub stream of 1280 x 720, and a Mobile stream of 640 x 480 pixels can be selected. either side of the IR and then a red and a blue at the left and right side respectively. Monochrome mode is supported by the central infrared illuminator and the white lights are available to enhance colour performance at very low-light levels. This warm-white light with or without the flashing red & blue deterrence lighting can be used to alert and deter intruders to their detection and can be combined with audio warnings. The camera is supplied with two alarm sounds or up to three user defined sound files that can be uploaded to the device. Scheduling is used to control alarm timing. To improve lowlight sensitivity, the time exposure default is set to 1/8th second so some additional motion blur can be expected at the lowest levels. Exposure range is 1/5th to 1/20,000th second. The internal microphone allows sound recording to be made and can be used as a detection device if sound levels increase or fall below a threshold value or specific sounds are detected. The camera can accept Micro-SD cards of up to 256GB capacity for alarm / edge storage. Infrared illumination gives coverage of up to around 35 metres depending on conditions when on maximum setting and up to 30 metres for visible light. AI detected clips can be listed as snapshots shown by date and time allowing quick analysis and review of captured events. The cameras rtsp stream data command is provided on the relevant set-up page and this function can be inhibited or allowed with anonymous access (no password required). Extensive security and IP filtering commands provide network protection.

The reality of AI in security Security system product marketing has been focusing on AI for a couple of years now, but what is the reality of the technology, who’s using it and why? We caught up with an expert to find out…
T
he security sector is very much like the consumer technology market in that it only takes one new development to come along and gain some traction and the whole industry then makes it a focus of its R&D. We saw this with the rush to higher resolution cameras, video doorbells and multi-sensor fire detectors. The latest “big thing” in the sector is AI, already gaining a strong reputation in the consumer market particularly in academia, but what is its role in security? Gerard Figols is the President of i-PRO EMEA, so sits at the top of a business that has seriously invested in AI. In fact, the company recently launched the X-series, a line of cameras that turn non-AI network cameras into AI smart devices. The new range also supports AI onsite learning of custom, user-defined objects with analytics. With support for up to nine AI applications, it is described as the most powerful AI camera to date from i-PRO as well as on the market. Therefore, Gerard is the ideal person for us to quiz about AI:

How has AI driven the direction of the security market? Before AI came into the security sector, we had developed analytics for CCTV but there was always the problem of the accuracy of the data. When you stop and think about it, the security industry is currently in a transformation phase like it was with the move from analogue to IP, the digitalisation of the security industry, when we went from a closed circuit to an open network. That change began in the 2000s and today we are experiencing the same shift with the AI era coming in. What people need to realise is that there are many uses for the information gained from a security camera, beyond security. Cameras are essentially data gathering devices and how you use this information and how beneficial it can be is very much dependent on the accuracy of the data. If the data is not accurate then the analytics cannot do its job. So, what AI is now doing is helping users to have much more accurate data and not just enhancing security but also improving the

operational efficiency of the business. We need to think of the units not as cameras but as IoT sensors and so, as such, a lot of companies like i-PRO are putting in additional investment into R&D with AI solutions. As a business we are very data driven and recognise the value of accurate information, which is why we now have more than 200 cameras with AI capabilities on the edge, whereas two years ago we had none. How easy is it to upgrade legacy systems to AI? This is an issue that we are very aware of. When technology evolves there is always a concern about what happens to the existing system that is in place. When cameras are already installed it means there has been a level of investment, so this is one of our priorities and remains at the forefront of our mind when we develop new technology. To address this we have launched a new range of cameras that converts three non-AI into AI capable units by running video through one of the new cameras. In this way all legacy systems can be easily upgraded with minimum investment with benefits that prove invaluable. Given that, how should installers promote AI to their customers? While the term AI has been used to market the technology to date, I think a more suitable name is deep learning. The advantage of AIled analytics is that the technology can learn for itself and improve the performance and efficiency of the analytics package. Without the AI element the analytics is just an algorithm

that will continue to perform in exactly the same way, doing the same job - not improving as it proceeds. With deep learning it can keep enhancing and improving the accuracy of the data being gathered. If your customers don’t get the correct data, then all the decisions they are going to make as a company are going to be wrong. That is a very strong message that installers can pass on to end users to help them understand, firstly the difference between AI and analytics and then also the benefits of deep learning. How easy is it to use and initiate AI camera functions? It is not difficult to start using deep learning. We have a number of applications that have been developed with partners to enable you to gain insights on the scene, depending on the number of pixels per metre or pixels per feet. We have a configuration tool that enable the installers to easily set up all of the cameras in a system, which is key because we understand time is money and the easier we can make it for the installer then the better the chance of success for the project. With the X-Series we are going one step further, implementing on-site learning applications. By providing the camera with a few images, it is able to subsequently detects this as a pattern, be it a dog, ambulance or a forklift truck and analysing the scene, the camera takes around ten minutes to learn and recognise what is in the scene. Furthermore, this on-site learning application can be spread out to any other i-PRO camera from the single camera in the same location or even different locations. This application is something that we launched recently to bring AI into physical security without the complexity of setup.

What are the benefits of having all the processing done at the edge? There are two reasons why edge technology is beneficial. Cameras capture all the information in the system so unless you do the processing at the edge you’ve got to transfer a massive amount of data to the central location meaning the bandwidth is going to be huge. The second point to consider is power consumption. If you have just one or two cameras the server can manage the work, but if you have hundreds of cameras you would need a lot of racks and servers to analyse all the data accurately. If you do the processing at the edge, you have one device focused on analysing and gathering data and you then just share the metadata or insights that you need to the central point. This saves bandwidth, power and time collectively making the whole project work more efficiently. So what are the genuine applications of AI? There are many applications that AI is being used for today - in fact I’m not aware of all of the installations because we have an open policy, meaning that we provide AI on our cameras and people can add applications by themselves. However, just to give an example of the type of use case we are seeing, one case study is with the Italian Police in the north of the country. They have implemented several of our cameras with AI on the edge for the purpose of motion detection and for vehicle and people counting helping them to analyse data and do forensic searches. They are also using the system for proactive purposes with a watchlist, all the while making sure that privacy concerns are addressed with i-PRO AI Privacy Guard. Another example is the Grimaldi Forum Monaco (GFM) Exhibition Centre that has around 100 multi-sensor and fisheye cameras with AI-based analytics to enhance visitor safety, protect priceless artworks and ensure a seamless and secure experience during high-profile events. Applications like scene change detection are implemented to make sure that nobody is taking artwork from site by recognising the pieces that should be there. The AI cameras are also being used to analyse trends such as crowding at certain times and also to help find lost persons using known factors such as clothing etc. Cameras

are not always being used for negative reasons such as finding criminals, you can use them to find people or groups that you have lost in a particular location as well as gathering data for business improvements. Logistics is another area benefitting from AI, especially in the “last mile” of any journey identifying products that are lost or using ANPR for container detection. There are many different applications for AI across different industries - with more coming to light every day. What does the future hold for AI in the security sector? I think AI adoption will keep growing and I’m fully convinced that in years to come it is going to be in the majority of security devices. I don’t know if this will be in the next two, five or ten years, but it will happen. Looking back at the transition from analogue to IP, in the early days people thought that analogue would remain as it was so established in the market, yet today I would guess that IP cameras are in the region of 90-95% of all the systems in place. This evolution took quite a long time, but I would expect that the move to AI will be much quicker. During this time AI devices will keep enhancing because the technology is also evolving, but for me the important question is not how many AI cameras and applications are going to be used, rather how AI is going to be used. A very fundamental issue with all of this is that AI needs to be used in an ethical way and is seen to be supporting and helping human rights rather than working against it. We must ensure that people are aware of the privacy applications of the technology by educating them because there has been adverse publicity about AI and I understand why that is happening, because sometimes AI has not been used in the right way. A transparent and ethical AI is important and it is down to manufacturers of AI devices to work responsibly and in a transparent way to make sure that people understand that AI is here to stay and it’s going to be used ethically to support everyone. It is understandable for people to have concerns, we’ve seen it in the past when something new comes along. With regulations and limitations on the use of the technology we can show that if used in the correct way, there are benefits for everyone in utilising AI.

What’s in store for 2024? (pt.2) Will it be a Happy New Year or an annus horribilis for the security industry in 2024? The PSI Panel continues the discussion from last month’s edition

ur usual topic for this time of year again continues on from the January edition as the PSI Panel of experts ponder for a second month what we have to look forward to in 2024. Have a read and see if you agree:
Jamie Barnfield – IDIS Europe Cybersecurity concerns will remain as international tensions mean there’s an elevated risk of statesponsored hacking. In December the UK parliament’s joint committee on national security strategy warned that an attack on critical infrastructure could occur at any moment, with catastrophic effects. As we head further into 2024, integrators should keep customers focused on cyber risks that maybe inherent in their video systems. Cameras and related devices are attractive targets for bad actors, and they can also allow infiltration into wider networks along with the risk of deep fakes and spoofing. Our partners have been reassured by our participation in rigorous and public ethical hacking event. These are likely to become more prevalent as manufacturers need to demonstrate

that their software and equipment have strong defences against multiple attack types. Cybersecurity is tightly related to NDAA compliance, which is now a globally recognised standard, especially for firms that want to do business with the US. We are seeing customers increasingly aware of the risks of using noncompliant video equipment or being associated with vendors with links to the PRC and reported “back doors”. Where there are good alternatives, end-users are voting with their purchasing choices. If 2023 was the year when AI entered the public mind, 2024 will see AI developing rapidly. In the security sector, AI video is not always a traditional sell as it can now tackle a range of operational challenges and deliver vital business intelligence, so there will be opportunities for integration to educate users around new uses and benefits and by collaborating with a wider range of stakeholders. Last year, we’ve seen how this can result in major contract wins, so we expect more of the same. And we’re likely to see manufacturers more responsive when it comes to developing new AI video functions, particularly if demand comes from sectors where they have a strong presence.

The key phrase for us in 2024 is integration. Not only has it opened doors to enhanced collaboration but also laid the foundation for a future where seamless blending of security and fire safety takes centre stage. In this respect, we refer to integration in its true sense. For how many installations truly embody the concept? The quest for a unified security solution, encompassing access control, visual verification, intruder alarms, and life safety. We identified a growing need for flexibility, innovation, and feature-rich solutions that go beyond functionality, but also considers the increasing importance of aesthetics and style. The need to create a welcoming entrance to a building with no compromise to security. Consider the residential market, high-rise, multi-dwelling apartment blocks require a balance to maintain a welcoming environment with expected security and convenience. Residents now assume access to technology that fits into their mobile lifestyle to respond instantly and make life easier. The industry must be ready to respond with a solution for access control, visual verification, intruder alarms, and life safety features to seamlessly coalesce into a unified system. This holistic approach is not only a response to the

They’ve been evolving over the last few years, especially as the industry has embraced hybrid and remote working. They’ve also been making their mark with organisations that are dealing with managing multiple sites. The unified platforms bring together both aspects of physical security, like access control, intruder detection and CCTV, which deals with who is moving in, out of and around organisations, and cyber security like securing access to data and systems. The latter, dealing with what information is being accessed, by whom and where it’s going. Moving forward, there will be more integration of systems and components, including all supplementary aspects of security, like hardware, environmental controls and building management. The point is to take a more holistic view of security and make it easier for security teams to manage all aspects in a seamless way, having that single interface that deals with everything from monitoring through to managing access control rights, and adjusting access control tactics. While not a new trend, it is one that will keep developing this year.

We envision a future where security systems are not isolated entities but components of a dynamic, adaptive network that constantly evolves to meet emerging threats. This supports ways that we can deliver more than a cost-driven approach but also focus on differentiation and value addition. The benefits of security can be felt across a site, from health and safety to site maintenance to car park management. All benefitting from real-time data analysis to allow a coordinated and instant response should an issue occur. To be effective, we must continue to open our industry to the understanding of continuous learning and training, embracing smart products and services and enabling the most capable and compliant design, installation, maintenance and monitoring.
John Coleman – CSL We expect the security industry to undergo some major technological and policy changes in 2024. This includes the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). The CRA has been making headlines since its approval in 2023, and it is expected to continue to be a major topic of discussion in 2024. The CRA is designed to improve the security of the EU’s critical infrastructure, and it will require businesses to take a more proactive approach to cybersecurity. UK businesses trading overseas will need to be sure that all product requirements, data collection and protection in place are compliant with the country they are trading in. Another major change will be the move to the post-PSTN nation. The UK is in the process of switching off its old PSTN network, to be completed by the end of 2025. BT will begin their rollout across regions this year and it will have a significant impact across ALL industries.

For the simple reason that we get to choose our own destiny and stock the products that we feel are right for the UK market, rather than global products that don’t quite fit. Plus, writing our own software allows us to create solutions for customers, such as maintenance and retail loss prevention software, that other people can’t do because they’re dictated to by major manufacturers and their global business strategies. We’ve developed our own products and brands because we want to be able to do the things that customers are
We’ve developed software for retailers and large installers for maintenance, but one of the most recent pieces of software that we wrote for forecourts. It’s an ANPR solution called ForeCaught that prevents ‘bilking’ or fuel theft. Within seconds we’ve checked the number plate against a blacklist, we poll databases such as the DVLA, check tax and MOT status, the make/model/colour of the vehicle. This is matched against the image that we’ve captured, and the system flags up any anomalies to the cashier at the petrol station enabling them to decide on pump authorisation. Rather than trying to recover losses, ForeCaught prevents the crime from happening and it’s available to the trade now. So, you’re not in a price battle with other distributors? No, we compete on value not price. Other distributors are fighting to win the same customers with the same products, they can’t offer lower purchase prices, so they offer rebates on spend. Then, in order to remain profitable, they’re cutting back on services or increasing costs in other areas. We’re not in that market, so while we may lose out if installers want specific brands, we’re not

sacrificing profit and services in a bid to win business. You stock everything from cables and clips through to server cabinets, how do you decide what to supply? We hold the products that everybody wants, such as an eyeball camera, but there are niche products that we supply based on specific challenges and problems that our customers have experienced. For example, if you want to upgrade a legacy CCTV system to IP but not all in one go, we have hybrid DVRs that can handle up to eight megapixels (4K) over co-ax and can also record IP network cameras as well. Solutions like that allow for easy migration rather than a total rip and replace, which means our installers can win more business without sacrificing their profits. We also have a device called IP Mule which allows for IP signals to be sent over co-ax and we’ve got standard wireless and IP wireless solutions as well, which extend existing systems easily. We put a lot of time and attention into the development of unique products that help installers to win jobs effortlessly and maintain great profits. Why is 2024 going to be a good year for System Q? For several reasons, we’ve made some quite big changes to the company and our approach to the market. We’ve created a clearer range of products and we have invested in a brand-new website, but I think the main reason we’ll have a good year is because we continue to offer what installers want and need to win profitable business.

Pread Um (Suk Bong) – Hanwha Vision Europe At Hanwha Vision, we have long predicted that the combination of AI and cameras would take video far from its roots in surveillance to the very heart of business operations, where data insights and forecasting become possible through deep real-time event and post-incident analysis. In the same way that AI is transforming other industries, AI’s impact on electronic security - and video surveillance in particular - will be profound in 2024. Over the next twelve months, we can expect to see wider adoption of AI and video, particularly ‘at the edge’, where it offers time and cost savings by reducing network bandwidth and server infrastructure requirements. As a result, I also envision more investment in the cloud as organisations deploy AI and realise how well the cloud complements its functionality. Cybersecurity will - and must - remain at the top of the boardroom agenda. The introduction of the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and Network and Information Security Directive 2nd Edition (NIS2) provide further impetus, were it needed, for organisations to work with manufacturers that not only comply with the legislation but also possess accreditations such as ISO 27001, and design and build products with cybersecurity at their core. Building on this, which companies leaders choose to do business with will increasingly depend on more than product specification and price alone. We see increasing user insistence on National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) compliance, and this is backed up by research we undertook which revealed that security managers expect, and would welcome, similar legislation to the NDAA in Europe. Users and installers are, therefore, more focused on working with responsible manufacturers. Finally, in the wake of COP28 and growing environmental pressures, I would expect sustainability to start becoming a condition of doing business. Indeed, new environmental reporting requirements for businesses to be introduced in 2024 will require users of video technology to consider the sustainability of the products they use more closely.
Recently Openreach hit a record number of PSTN lines upgraded in a week (90,000), at this rate, we can estimate 5 million lines will be upgraded in 2024 which could cause disruptions to thousands of businesses. Businesses will need to upgrade their systems, and many remain unaware of the switch-off. In addition to these talking points, we expect other trends to shape the security industry in 2024 including: the increasing use of AI in security, the growth of the IoT, the increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks and the process of converting PSTN – are large enterprises aware and ready for a long rollout process? Overall, the security industry is expected to be a dynamic and challenging environment in 2024. Businesses will need to stay up to date on the latest trends and technologies to protect themselves from cyber threats and ensure business continuity.

It has been well documented that the UK is facing its biggest skills shortage for a generation, with a talent gap across a range of 33

together raising standards professions. And the construction industry, as a key economic driver, has been particularly hit hard. From our perspective, the biggest issue is that people have no long-term experience and a lack of engineers understanding the specific disciplines of the industry. Instead being trained as ‘multi-disciplined’ which often does not suit the intricacy of design in security and fire safety. To counter this, we have employed team members even from outside the industry so that we can train and work with them to understand the unique intricacies of our sector. Working between our departments to see what is involved from specification and design, through sales and technical to monitoring and maintenance. And we remain committed as we have done from day one of our establishment to an annual apprenticeship programme to encourage jobspecific skills, this is both in our engineering team and across our administration and sales teams. This has proven its value time and again, with the majority of our apprentices being kept and promoted by Amthal, even to senior management positions. Most recently Reece Paprotny who joined us as an apprentice was named our Commercial Director.

Are there any common requests from customers that give you problems? One common challenge we often encounter involves customers requesting immediate onsite presence, sometimes expecting us to start work instantly! While we always aim to accommodate urgent needs, such tight timelines can be challenging to meet, especially when it comes to providing thoughtful designs and specifications. Balancing the urgency of our customers with the need for careful planning is crucial to ensuring the quality and effectiveness of our fire and security solutions. Another common request that can pose challenges is when customers ask for extensive system modifications or installations within a very limited budget. There are definite instances where customers’ expectations may exceed what can be realistically achieved within the allocated budget. This often requires open communication and collaboration to find a balance between their needs and financial constraints. It perhaps introduces the concept of a phased works programme, one that is scalable to achieve the objectives. Of course, we understand at the moment, especially for Facility Managers who are cost, time and resource-stretched that we need to align as much as we can to support their needs.
And it’s doing so carefully with a planned strategy and realistic timescale to deliver effective and reliable fire and security systems with minimal disruption. What is the security industry’s biggest myth? One of the persistent myths in the security and fire industry is the belief that once a system is installed, it can operate indefinitely without any need for updates, maintenance, or reassessment. I still find this astounding that it is believed! In reality, we know technology evolves, and threats are becoming more sophisticated over time, not only in the physical sense but we must also not ignore the challenges of cybercrime. Regular maintenance, updates, and periodic reassessment of security and fire systems are crucial to ensuring their continued effectiveness. This proactive approach not only helps identify and address potential issues before they escalate but also ensures that the systems remain compliant with the latest industry standards and regulations. It also allows for the incorporation of new technologies and features that can enhance the overall performance and capabilities of the systems, providing clients with the most advanced and secure solutions available. The idea that a one-time installation provides everlasting security leads to complacency, leaving systems vulnerable to new risks and challenges. Security and fire safety cannot be a tick box and completed activity. A proactive and ongoing approach to system maintenance and upgrades is essential for keeping pace with emerging threats and maintaining the highest standards of safety and security. And not least to comply with evolving legislation, especially in fire safety. What advice would you give to a younger version of yourself? Kindness makes you the most beautiful person in the world. No matter what you look like, believe in yourself. Approach the world with a smile and open mind and make a difference in people’s lives. Will England ever win the football World Cup again? We live in hope! I think we have as good a chance now as we have ever had but it’s about the performance on the day. If you won £25,000 what would you do with it? My wife and I would probably use the money to go on a long holiday around America. Hire an RV and drive to all the places we want to visit. So much to see and do and to experience the real “American Dream.”

Bosch – Flexidome NDE-3503-AL Part of the Bosch Flexidome IP 3000i IR range, this fixed dome camera is impact resistant to IK10 with IP66 protection rating and has a 1/2.9” 5MP CMOS sensor, 3.2 to 10mm motorised lens and a range of “Essential” video analytic functions. It has a diameter of 137mm and height of 122.5mm. It has an operating temperature of -30°C to +50°C. Review: A very capable dome camera with a wide range of configuration options. Score: 8.5/10
i-PRO – WV-S71300-F3 The i-PRO WV-S71300-F3 camera is described as an internal IP44 mini box camera with overall dimensions of 102(w) x 48(H) x 21(D) mm. It has a clear protective cover that increases the dimension by approximately 1.5mm per side. Review: A very compact camera whose appearance does not stand out, making it ideal for locations where overt security is not desired. Score: 8.5/10
Uniview – IPC2325EBR5-DPZ Promoted as a 5MP WDR Starlight Varifocal IP67 network bullet camera, the unit is based on a 1/ 2.7” sensor with a 2.7 to 13.5mm auto-focus motorized zoom lens giving a horizontal angle of view from 93.28° to 28.56°. Review: A versatile solidly built external bullet camera with a wide range of configuration settings. The security settings allow the camera to be suitably locked-down but the lack of a forced “strong” password is a concern; perhaps a future firmware update will remedy this. Score: 8/10
AVA – DOME W-4K-30 The AVA dome is an NDAA compliant vandal resistant (IK10) day /night IP66 dome for indoor or outdoor use with 4K imaging, built-in microphones and edge analytics. The dome uses Cloud connectivity to provide simple set-up and management. Review: A well-engineered dome with impressive analytics capabilities and straightforward secure connectivity. Ideal for diverse or centralised systems with flexible notifications that can be received and managed from anywhere with available internet access. Score: 8.5/10

Hikvision – ColorVu DS-2CD2087G2-LU This IP67, 8MP bullet camera is from the Hikvision ColorVu range. It is designed for 24-hour colour imagery with warm-white visible LED illumination support for zero light scenes. A wide 2.8mm lens version is standard with 4mm and 6mm options. Review: An extremely sensitive 8MP high-resolution camera with advanced detection capabilities, 24-hour colour capability and a wide range of security features. Score: 9/10
Serage – SRDNC5FW Dome The Serage SRDNC5FW from G-TEC is an IP66 ‘Turret’ style 5MP dome with a fixed 2.8mm lens. It is based around a 1/2.7” high sensitivity sensor coupled with an F1.0 lens to give good colour images in low light. Visible and infrared illumination is built in, and a microphone provides audio. AI based video and audio detection is included. Review: A very good all-round performance from this compact dome camera. Excellent colour image quality in very low light levels and flexible detection and analytic capabilities. Score: 8.5/10
Oncam – C-12 Indoor This internal 360° view camera designed for ceiling or wall mounting, is based on a 12MP sensor and provides a fisheye image with a wide range of configuration options. Review: A very powerful compact fisheye view camera compatible with a wide range of video management systems with simplicity of installation and good support documentation. Score:
Dahua – TiOC 2.0 The DH-IPC-HDW3549H-AS-PV-S3 is a 5MP full-colour fixed-focal eyeball WizSense network camera. It is the latest in the company’s TiOC (three- in-one camera) line which integrates 24/7 full-colour monitoring, active deterrence and AI into one solution. Review: A very capable Eyeball style dome that has a wide range of features to help detect and deter intruders, with extensive cyber security settings. When used with the Dahua Smart NVR, the camera supports intelligent search capabilities. Score: 8.5/10
Wisenet – PNM-C7083RVD The PNM-C7083RVD multi-directional camera is a dual dome device that provides two 2MP views that can be individually set to suit locations while requiring only one network lead. The cameras provide AI object classification analytics and low light operation. They are IP66 & NEMA4X environmentally rated with an IK10 impact protection rating. Review: An impressive and very flexible dual camera unit that is easy to install, configure and maintain. Score: 9/10

The intercom is designed for 4G networks but is also compatible with 2G and 3G networks. Review: A well-engineered flexible and expandable 4G based intercom system that can be managed through a variety of local and remote methods. Score: 8.5/10
Pyronix – Home Control DoorbellCam kit A smart HD video doorbell and wireless chime kit that allows users to receive real-time alerts from the front door and stay connected to home; never missing a visitor or delivery again. The DoorbellCam has an inbuilt mic and speaker for two-way contact. Review: This easy to set up and straightforward to use video doorbell kit would be a great addition to any smart home system or simply to provide more functionality at an entrance way. Score: 8/10
Ajax – KeyPad TouchScreen The KeyPad TouchScreen Jeweller is an indoor unit compatible with Hub 2 and Hub Hybrid controller variants (with firmware OS Malevich 2.16.1 or higher) and the Rex 2 range extender. The 480 x 854 pixel 5” display with capacitive touchscreen is woken by proximity or pressing any part of the display area. Review: A very simple to install and manage enhanced addition to the Ajax range. Gives increased user flexibility and control. Score: 9/10
Eaton – i-on10 KP The i-on Compact Security System is a Grade 2 wired intrusion detection panel with 10 zones and up to 10 users and 4 keypads. It is promoted as being suitable for simple, entry-level burglar alarm systems to protect homes and small commercial installations. Review: A straightforward and engineer friendly grade 2 wired alarm system with a wide range of configuration options and simplicity of installation. Good documentation is supplied with the product. Score: 9/10
CSL – MiniAir 2 MiniAir 2 is a single-path signalling solution that utilises a 4G/LTE-M path to signal an alarm from a protected premises to an ARC. It comes with a standby SIM as a backup to safeguard the system, if the active SIM fails. Review: The product overall is great. It is a perfect solution to the PSTN switch over/off as it means that existing systems that rely solely on PSTN signalling can continue to do so without the expense of upgrading the customers control equipment. With a choice of EN Grade 2 wired or wireless connectivity, wall or ceiling mounting, and a choice of detection technologies including dual element, quad element or dual technology sensing, Capture suits a wide variety of security environments. Review: The ease of connection with a range of switchable, built-in EOL resistor values simplifies the installation process. The potential for device branding will likely be appealing to independent installers. Score: 9/10
Netgear – GS305E The GS305E is a 5-port Gigabit Smart managed SOHO switch at an unmanaged switch price. It is from the 300 range that includes 8-port and PoE+ variants. They include flexible VLAN, QoS and IGMP Snooping features with local and remote management. Review: A well-engineered low-cost managed network switch with high bandwidth, good security features and simple local and remote management capability. Score: 9/10
Ruijie – Reyee Ruijie Reyee devices are part of a range of network products. We reviewed the RG-EG105G-P Router, the RG-ES206GC-P Managed Network Switch and the RGRAP2200(E) Access Point. Review: This is an impressive range of cloudmanaged network products that can be used to build well documented secure networks for security or office systems. Ease of remote access and system management simplifies long term support Score: 9/10
Dnake – IPK03 kit The IPK03 is a video intercom kit comprising the E216 7” capacitive touch screen internal monitor and an S212 door station. Both items can be PoE or 12v powered and use wired network connections for communication. Review: A very easily configured networked video door entry system that can be used as a simple video intercom or expanded with multiple door readers and displays, and remote connectivity. Score: 8.5/10
2N – IP Verso 2.0 This updated 2N product maintains compatibility with the original Verso range but provides upgraded features including a wide dynamic range HD camera and with extended capabilities due to the use of the ARTPEC-7 processor produced by parent company Axis. Review: This is a highly flexible system with wide ranging capabilities and facilities. Score: 8/10

Alan Kent, who has over 10 years’ experience in the architectural ironmongery field, will be working with ERA clients in the south of the UK.He will be sharing product expertise and supporting customers to offer a variety of quality ERA products, from its decorative Fab&Fix range to its smart security solution – TouchKey. Alan will be on hand with market advice and guidance to identify new sales opportunities for ERA customers, including new ERA products that will strengthen their portfolio.
Peter Greener Irisity has appointed Peter Greener as Sales Director, UK and Ireland to lead Irisity’s expansion in the region, a key market for the business as it builds a global network of users, resellers and partners. Peter started his security career with Norbain Security and spent many years with open platform VMS provider Milestone Systems, most recently as Key Account Manager, Northern Europe. “I am excited to be leading Irisity’s expansion in the UK and Ireland”, said Peter. “These markets have traditionally led the way in adopting video surveillance technology, so I am keen to build on growing interest in AI and analytics through Irisity’s IRIS+ AI Open Video Platform.”
