Letter It’s human nature to get caught up in one’s own life and think our issues are the most important, making it appear that many people in this world have become selfish; that is often until something literally as earth shattering as the recent and devastating earthquake in Nepal. It has brought much of the community in Bahrain together with the sole aim to help. Like the rest of the world, the island’s many institutions, groups and individuals have worked hard to collect much needed supplies and funds for the victims, proving there is still so much good in this world. The earthquake has caused so much destruction that people living in Nepal are going to need continuous support. There are a number of charity events being held throughout Bahrain this month. Check out our Not to be Missed (Pg 10) for these and many other exciting events to keep you busy. While you’re at it, don’t miss our regular scoop of what’s new in the Kingdom. More power to LOCAL TALENT! Our art space this month showcases the work of a Bahraini illustrator. Read his ‘from struggles to the stars’ story on Pg 22. We brought back one of our old hits, ‘In the Spotlight’ which has been gaining considerable popularity; it’s encouraging to see emails pouring in from so many of our lovely readers in Bahrain – thank you for all the love!

It’s the last month of spring season and we’ve tried and showcased the best in Spring Fashion (Pgs 40 to 54). Ladies, while you’re prepping up your outer look, don’t forget to jazz up the insides too with the latest collections of sensual, gorgeous lingerie. Our travel contributor enjoys the beachy blues at Maldives this month (Pg 70). Plan your summer holiday to this awesome destination which offers visa-free access to almost every country. The world of technology is as dynamic as ever and two of Bahrain’s best telecom brands tell us what’s new (Pg 72)! Our Cars section introduces you to some of the best in the industry – if you’re looking to change your wheels go to Pg 110. Check out our Gastro pages (Pg 116) for the best brunches in Bahrain and don’t miss scanning the Nightlife (Pg 120) for happening parties in town – that’s what tinsel town is made of! Our Gastro section also features Ahsan, a student with learning disabilities living in Bahrain who launched his very own recipe book. We will be featuring some of his recipes in the coming months. Until we meet again – smile and compliment someone today. It will make you feel great too!

hanks so much to your proofreader or should I be more frank, lack of proofing – hahaha, what happened, did the office run out of coffee? Well, the error/s I spotted had me in fits – so if you need any help just let me know and I’ll drop my seven-year-old daughter as I’m sure she can do better.

Mr English Professor Mmmmm send your little darling along to us as we suspect she may have also acquired daddy’s little sarcastic streak – therefore she can write these letters – but don’t expect the brat, whoops, darling to be rewarded other than more work if she’s good! She can start today…

have to say I really enjoy your makeovers – the last one which finished earlier this year was amazing! I have to give your victims…err, participants credit for being so open about what they’ve had done. I bet they can’t thank you enough? But why don’t you do men, is it because we’re too perfect?

young talent Bahrain Confidential May 2015

This year, we decided to take a huge step in supporting young talent. After all, they are going to be ‘The Generation Of Tomorrow’. So we took to the streets to go hunting for those who had that X-Factor, the determination to be in the spotlight. Introducing to you, Chime J Rosaldes.

Myself

I am 12 years old, and I study at the Philippine School Bahrain. I love colouring, sketching, drawing and painting. When I’m not studying or being artistic, I’m probably reading a book, listening to music or playing the piano. Being able to draw and paint has helped me realise what I want to be. This is why I’m going to take up Fine Arts in college. I’m positive that this will further enhance my talent and will also help me go places.

Painting

I have had the honour of winning painting competitions at various places like the Lions Club, Riffa for 2 consecutive years (2014-2015) and have recently won 2nd place in the Toyota 9th Dream Car Painting Contest 2015. This has given me more confidence and the push I need to make my dreams a reality.

Real Life Mentor:

My father is my biggest mentor and my number one critic. He himself is a Fine Arts graduate and an artist by heart. Having an artist as a father is quite challenging but he pushes to bring out the best in me.

My Inspiration:

Beautiful artworks, paintings by famous artists and people whom I meet and interact with daily; they inspire me. My family, friends and my art teacher, Cathy Paje, never fail to motivate and support me in my endeavors.

If I Could Be Like Someone, I Would Be Like: I would like to be Pablo Picasso, a great artist. He inspires me with his colours and subjects. Like he once said, “Everything that you imagine is real”. With the success that

Chime J Rosaldes In The Spotlight I had my first painting exhibit at the British School Bahrain in 2012 and an international Art Exhibition in Muscat Sultanate of Oman in the same year. The journey so far has been a dream come true for me, especially when my painting was included in a coffee table book, “ART AS REALITY”, published by the Philippine Embassy in Oman.

20

I can achieve in the world of Arts, everything that I dreamed of, and imagined will gradually become a reality.

OF THE STORY

But you know what they say, ‘The shy always have a crazy talent on the inside that won’t

Leon Foxwings

When did you realise you were into illustration?

When I left high school, I knew I wanted my job to be primarily about drawing. I just didn't know what that job title was. There are many career paths in the arts. I thought, I'd fit as a graphic designer, but that didn't work for me. So, I thought I wanted to be a concept artist for gaming, and I taught myself everything that leaned towards gaming. I looked up what concept artists recommend, what skills they need, which books art universities teach their students from, and learned that. I also looked into every resource about illustration, available and the mentorship from the art scene here in Bahrain. In 2012, I realised I didn’t enjoy the gaming industry as much and that I was more cut out for illustration. What I never thought would happen is that I would love working as a fine artist too. So, a fine artist and an illustrator it is in a nutshell.

Your inspiration.

That's a tricky one. Because, I'd say I'm practically inspired by everything. I take it from stories, life, folklore, history, mythology, science, and psychology, literally everything. The issue isn't the lack of inspiration to create. It's people blocking their own creative flow.

23

art space Bahrain Confidential May 2015

How would you like to be remembered?

I actually don't know. I never thought about it before. I'd probably be very grateful just for being remembered. But what would really make me happy is if I could leave some form of a positive impact on you. By you I mean readers, viewers, or if you're in my life somehow.

A challenging illustration for the future. I'm working on a children's book I wrote. And I want to work on a mural. I love children's books, and I miss climbing scaffoldings. I miss it even if I'm scared of heights.

What's in store for 2015?

There will be more appearences of my work this year.

Visit Malja in Amwaj for your scoop of art and creativity!

What Happens When Urban Goes Corporate By Nadine Compton

Nadine Compton

Tucked away in a little corner on one of the Amwaj Islands, you can find a creative space called Malja. Calling itself a hub for contemporary artists, designers, and musicians, Malja is relatively new. Owned by Red Bull, the space is multi-purpose having a gallery, DJ's stage, recording studio and a small art/dance room inside.

W

hen I visited Malja, there was a group exhibit on called Urban Nest, which featured both local and expat artists from the regional urban art scene. The exhibition primarily consisted of photographs taken of the urban art scene in the Gulf region, but it also had a cubic installation, a watercolour painting, an illustration, and a few spray painted objects. Every photo that was on display was taken by, Melchior de Tinguy, who was actually born in Bahrain and raised abroad. According to his bio, he came back to exhibit a 2013 project and decided to stay and bring awareness to the growing creativity in the region. I wasn't able to pick out the titles of all of the photographs as they weren't properly labeled and I had to make educated guesses from the pamphlet I was handed. Hopefully, they’ll change this for upcoming exhibitions. Malja used to be a grocery store and on their website, they describe the building as a warehouse, so they really try to evoke an urban theme with their interiors. The curator was a great tour guide as she took me through the building and explained how the space works, all this while trying to deal with other issues. At the time of my visit, she was busy working on an art piece, but she took the time away from her work and I really appreciated that. Ultimately though, the space is still run by a corporation, who reminded you of that as soon as you walked through the door or wanted to get a drink (Red Bull). They were even setting up a half pipe outside in the adjacent parking lot. For some kind of eXtreme sports competition, I guess? I didn't even know people still did that. I thought we left skateboards behind in the '90s. But I get it, if you want funding and wider recognition for your work, you go to a big company. I still enjoyed the artwork and the concept behind Red

Bull Spaces. It has got a more youthful feel than Al-Riwaq Art Space and if I can get a ride back to the island, I'll be back. The Malja building is actually located in the old Alosra at Amwaj Islands. You can find it behind the Amwaj Management Office. Beyond that, I don’t have any better

directions to give you. The opening hours are from 12:00 to 8:00. B-Boy sessions occur every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, but you can attend workshops on music, art, and design. Book the studio for music recording, dance and art by emailing info@ maljabahrain.com.

* Please note that these are not the publisher’s opinions.

hospitality interview Bahrain Confidential May 2015

New & Innovative Leadership Stephen Daniel has 22 years of experience in Bahrain's hospitality industry and was recently appointed as Acting General Manager at the luxurious and unique Domain Hotel & Spa. He sits down with Bahrain Confidential to chat about his future plans. Rebecca Smith (RS): What are the biggest challenges you’ve had to face since coming on board? Stephen Daniel (SD): Being given a responsible role at a unique boutique hotel was something totally different and challenging. Getting into the Domain spirit, taking over leadership and running the entire show was very demanding. Though, I believe I’m fulfilling my responsibilities so far and will continue to be better in the days to come. Bahrain is a very challenging market for businesses as there is a lot of competition. If you need to stand out, you need to be different; and if you need to be different, you need to be on people’s minds. Our market penetration is strong in creating awareness to ensure people feel the brand's presence, not only as a hotel but also a luxury boutique marquee on the island. RS: When you started, was there a big change over in staff? Did you have to recruit new people? SD: No; we believe in our team which has been here even in the past. I didn’t see a reason to change anything. We’ve gelled together and are working towards a united goal which is making The Domain Hotel & Spa successful. RS: The Domain is a new name in the hospitality industry when compared to many others. What do you think people’s perceptions were before you started? SD: People had a different perception about welcoming a boutique hotel like the Domain as there wasn't one earlier to this. Though, people have accepted the trend and brand's presence in Bahrain which is a positive thing for us and encourages us to move forward. We believe 'we can do better'. The moment I walked in here, I knew I could carry the Domain flagship successfully, with the knowledge and experience I’ve got in the Kingdom and around the GCC. RS: Tell us more about the facilities at The Domain Hotel & Spa. SD: We have 63 ultra-modern suites and 68 rooms at the hotel. On the 34th floor are Le Domain 34 which serves South of France

Txoko Basque Lounge which is on the 36th floor also received recognition as the best night outlet in 2014. These are our fine dining restaurants. We also have Figs & Olives, an all day Italo-Lebanese restaurant and Cigar Lounge where guests can relax and have a good time, both on the 16th floor.

RS: One thing I love about The Domain Hotel

& Spa is Vie Lifestyle Lab. It offers a range of treatments that most places in Bahrain don’t. SD: We’ve witnessed growth from when the spa started to where we stand today. Our treatments and therapies are unique in Bahrain. For instance, the ‘Iyashi Dome’ treatment makes you burn 600 calories in just a 30-minute session! It’s one of our popular offerings and we have several others that guests love. In addition to visitors, we also have members who use our spa frequently and that number is increasing. We’re always looking at new initiatives. For instance, we recently started serving health food for our fitness conscious guests. We want them spend time at our spa and experience good results with us.

RS: You’ve been in the industry for a very long time now. How long?

SD: I’ve worked for 22 years in Bahrain's hospitality industry. I started small – took up a job as a room

boy at one of the hotels here. It was a tough journey, encouraging though. I’ve been to places where most would only imagine being and some wouldn’t want to be at. I’ve had some really good mentors along the way.

RS: What skill set does one need to get into hospitality, because it is a hard industry? SD: I wouldn’t say it’s a difficult industry. If you believe in yourself and are a team player then you’re good and it gets better as you grow. There is no substitute for hardwork and if you want to ahiceve your goals, you need to have a clear vision. RS: What is your greatest triumph to date, personal or career wise or both? SD: Giving this interview (smiles)! I feel energised about what I’ve contributed to the hospitality industry: what I can do for myself and upcoming talent. I’m always energised to give them that encouragement to boost their morale so they can become better hospitality leaders tomorrow.

devote my time to my family. We go out, watch a movie together or have dinner together. I spend quality time with them.

RS: What motivates you and where do you see yourself in the next ten years? SD: I believe that one's motivation is one's own self. When you have a vision and goal it creates a sense of self belief, personal strength and positive attitude which enable you to look beyond the present and give you a clear picture of the future. In the next ten years, I see myself running a group of hotels. I also aspire to educate youngsters, motivate them and make sure that the hospitality industry in Bahrain is booming.

RS: How do you keep your energy? SD: My family is my strength and even though there

RS: I kind of believe that one, which takes me to my last question: if we have a chain of Domains in the coming years, what would you like people to think of it? SD: I want people to know that the Domain Hotel & Spa is unique and one of its kind, delivers the highest level of service, and offers luxurious comfort levels which ensure a high percentage of guest satisfaction. We at the Domain Hotel & Spa are committed to this promise.

RS: Does your wife ever see you these days (chuckles)? SD: Oh yes, on Fridays (smiles)! Since I took up this responsible role at the Domain Hotel & Spa, there are days when I work for long hours. On Fridays, I

Wake Up With Make-up The Best Beauty Story There Is!

Everyday make-up is a thing of the past. The talk in town is all about permanent make-up. Permanent makeup does not smear, won’t come off and even better, it can last a lifetime. Bahrain Confidential speaks to Iro Smith, one of the oldest and most popular name in the permanent make-up industry. A certified, professional esthetician, make-up artist, permanent make-up artist as well as a permanent make-up trainer, Iro Smith, is known locally, regionally and internationally for her 25 years and growing passion in the field of permanent make-up. Iro is a visionary and is looking to set up a permanent make-up school in Bahrain very soon. She is the founder of the company IRO SMITH " Wake Up With Make-up" with branches in Greece and the Middle East.

Before After

Let’s run you through what this is all about. Permanent Make-up is the micro-implantation of colour into the skin of eyebrows, eyelines, liplines and more. The technique of applying permanent make-up has been medically developed and is ideal for everybody, especially athletes, people who tend to be allergic to conventional make-up, those who have had surgeries and want to cover scars. This entire process looks natural, never smudges and saves time. Iro Smith is also well-known for permanent make-up CORRECTIONS. So, if your eyebrows are a disaster, you know who to call.

Before

After

In a nutshell, Permanent make-up is perfect for: • The busy woman 'on the go' who wants to save time. • The active woman who wants to look fresh throughout her sports. • The woman with limited dexterity, or who has trouble seeing well. • The woman who is allergic to eye make-up, or who wears contact lenses, and has problemswith watery eyes and smearing make-up. • Breast cancer patients (aerola restorations). Some people may be worried about the safety of the procedure and reactions. Trust us, when we say this- All instruments and materials Iro uses are allergy-free and disposable. With the experience of having helped thousands of clients and more across the Middle East and around the world, we mean it when we tell you; she’s the best in the business. We had the privilege to see many written testimonials along with their before and after pictures. She has definitely transformed them! Get Summer-ready!

Prep-up your skin and hair care regimes with these easy tips before the heat wave sweeps the island. We all must know summers in Bahrain can be dreadful. It’s not just the heat but the humidity that takes its toll on us too. Though we can’t avoid it, we can definitely make small lifestyle changes and follow good body care routines to make sure we’re not affected. Bahrain Confidential’s beauty editor shares simple steps to get summer-ready!

Lifestyle Changes • Drink lots of liquids: Our skin and hair tend to get dehydrated quickly during summer. If you’ve got a desk job, take water-breaks every half hour. If you’re always in and out of meetings, keep a bottle of water handy and sip on the go. In addition, drink lots of fresh fruit and vegetable juices, and green tea. Water infused with lemons, cucumber, strawberries and the like are a great option too. • Avoid spicy, fatty food: Go slow on the spice this summer. Eating pungent food creates heat in the body which aggravates pimples, acne breakouts and other problems. Fatty foods make you feel sluggish so eat more fresh food – fruits, salads, nuts and seeds, steamed/baked protein. Fried foods are a no-no! • Be active: Summers can make you lethargic but the trick is to keep moving. If you have a desk job/are a homebody, try and walk in your office/ home after regular intervals. Choose a form of exercise that you enjoy – Zumba, jiu jitsu, kick-boxing – or just hit the road in your running shoes. Get ‘em happy hormones flowing!

Skin & Hair-care Regimes • Use sunscreen: Most of us ignore sun protection which is very dangerous; especially in this part of the world where the sun is extremely

60

strong. It can lead to severe skin damage, uneven pigmentation and even cause cancer. Make sure you apply the lotion to all exposed parts of your body – face and neck, hands and palms, and legs and feet (if you’re wearing open footwear). • Hair Oiling & Conditioning: Our hair gets dehydrated quicker during the summer and so regularly oiling your scalp is essential. When you wash your hair, use a good conditioner so your tresses are left nourished and moisturised. Try and comb your hair at least twice or thrice a day to boost blood circulation. • Make-up & Hair Styling: If you’re fashion conscious and use make-up or style your hair often, ensure you use good quality products. Don’t forget your make-up removal routine –cleanse, tone and moisturise. If you want to colour your hair, use ammonia-free, quality hair colour and go to a good parlour. Framesi Glamour is one of the better hair colours in the market, giving you over 50 shades when mixed and matched thus offering customised styling. Low on Ammonia and rich in coconut oil and conditioning cream, it moisturises hair and covers grays like no

other, while reducing damage to your roots. 18MEA, Vitamin E and C further nourishes your tresses, helping them against ageing and providing them with much needed anti oxidants. Mythos has a wide range of body care – face, hair, body, hands, and feet – products for all skin and hair types. Made from 100 per cent natural ingredients and without any conventional preservatives, it uses some of the most innovative formulae sure to make wonders for your skin and hair. Its product line-up includes sun screen lotions, moisturisers, conditioners, cleansing gels, hair masks, shower scrubs and more. Framesi Glamour and Mythos products are available at Jaffar Pharmacy, Hoora; Jaffar Pharmacy, Al Muksh (Budaiya Road); National Pharmacy, Sanad; Ruyan Pharmacy, Salmabad; Majeed Jaffar Pharmacy, Muharraq; Leena Pharmacy, Adliya & Atlas Pharmacy, Bani Jamra.

The Perfect Mantras To Stop ‘The Body Hate’ There is no one on the planet (yes we say that with so much confidence) that looks in the mirror and does not complain of what they see. It can be the little tummy that happened because of the delicious food you just could not resist, the podgy fingers, legs that probably are too skinny or probably not toned, really we can go on! It didn’t matter too much when we were kids, and then all of a sudden we are all grown up and eager to change every tiny problem in our body. It’s time people. “IT’S TIME TO STOP THE BODY HATE!” Over criticising your body is not going to get you anywhere. On the contrary, all the body bashing makes it harder to make a positive change for yourself. We are going to help you love your body every time you look in the mirror, starting now. Take post-its, write these down and stick them on your mirror. Choose what mantra you want to tell yourself each day. OR just learn them. Whichever way you prefer, these mantras are the first thing you need to show your body some love.

Why My Son Can Play As Much Xbox As He Wants

Craig Heslop

By Craig Heslop

M

y wife may be a little startled by this statement but I’m sure (I hope) that she will agree with my reasoning. Our son is almost two years of age and we frequently discuss our philosophies on such matters of bringing up a happy and healthy boy. As a coach for over one hundred students, I always have some parents chirping about their child’s computer addiction. As I listen to this almost daily rant, in my head I am thinking, “why does your kid spend his/her entire holiday on the computer?” Most parents are not mature enough to listen to my honest answer, so I usually keep it to myself. You see the modern parent is very sensitive and there nothing wrong about him/her or his/ her children. Growing up in the north-west of England, I was amongst one of the few lucky lads who still had both parents at home. My father was a busy man and would commute long distances every day. A sense of work ethic was inspired in me by a man who would work for twelve hours and then come home to help me with my homework, coach our football team or

complete his university degree until the late hours of the night. The point I am making is that he was a busy man. Despite all this, I had a father who was interested in his son and gave me the confidence to see life as an adventure. He never gave me a lecture about spending too much time on the PlayStation because he never had too. Playing computer games at home was never seen as a taboo as we did not rely upon it for fun. There was always something else to do. As a parent, we have to be careful with how often we say ‘no’. Restrict something and the demand goes through the roof. “Your iPad has been taken away for a week” = when I get that device back I’m going to get so high on it. The ‘Rat Park Heroin Experiment’ conducted in the late 1970s showed us that the biggest contributor to addiction was the environment. Psychologist, Bruce K Alexander made the conclusion that drugs don’t make one addicted to them. It’s the environment in which the person lives. The rats who had stimulation, fun

and social-interaction simply turned their noses up to opiates. Banning a computer is a plaster solution to a wound that needs sterilising and long-term stitching. This takes me back to the question of, ‘why’. My gut tells me that if a kid has an unhealthy relationship with technology, his/her life is unfulfilling and not stimulating enough. I don’t mean busy. I see children all the time who are busy. These kids have no time to breathe and end up being burned out. Nobody forces a child to play Minecraft for five uninterrupted hours. It’s their go-to when there is no one to play with or nothing to do that is challenging. Any child would rather be kicking ball with his old man than play playing Fifa on the Xbox. It may take some time for the lad to divorce his computer, but it will happen. Trust me, dads are way cooler. Playing a few hours of computer games each week is not going to kill anyone. It is part of growing up for some kids. Despite this, children will not remember the countless hours spent in front of the PlayStation. What

“As I listen to this almost daily rant, in my head I am thinking, “why does your kid spend his/her entire holiday on the computer?” they do remember for the rest of their lives are the priceless memories spent having fun with their family. Lead by example, fill your children with real confidence and start creating priceless memories!

recycleforBahrain # Melissa Nazareth finds out how the all plastic that’s choking our environment can be used for a greater cause.

What is the project about? The plastic recycling initiative was launched in 2011 by the Bahrain Association for Parents and Friends of the Disabled. Since then, they’ve been collecting plastic jars, bottle caps, bottles – water, juice, shampoo – and other such recyclables under the slogan, ‘Don’t throw it away…it can be used in some other way’. All proceeds are used to finance the purchase of wheelchairs and related equipment for children with disabilities.

Beautiful bouquets made by the children as part of an activity organised by the association

How should you address them?

The internationally accepted term is ‘Persons with Disability’ to show that they are persons first. NOT ‘Special People’ or ‘Disabled People’ or ‘Physically/Mentally Challenged People’ or ‘Handicapped People’.

How many wheelchairs have been purchased so far? After 3 years, the association has bought two chairs for a total of BD2,900. The cheapest wheelchair costs a whopping BD1,000! This year, they hope for better as more people have come together to support the cause.

66

Why are these wheelchairs so expensive? These are not your regular wheelchairs. They are custom made to the specifications of each child with disabilities. These children spend a lot of time sitting which can put the spine under pressure causing it to bend. The special wheelchair supports the spine.

Dr A Rahman S Ahmed, Vice President, Bahrain Association for Parents & Friends of the Disabled

Who makes these wheelchairs? There are a few companies in Bahrain who have come forward and one company in particular has strongly supported the cause - their team is present even when the Occupational Therapist meets each child for examination. She also decides the specifications for the chairs.

Who has participated so far? • Individuals and households in Bahrain • Companies and schools in Bahrain • The Royal Academy of Police

making a difference Bahrain Confidential May 2015

How can you volunteer? The association is looking out for: • Containers to be distributed to the various parties collaborating in this project. • A land or storage facility to collect and store the plastic materials received before they are transported to the factory. • A device or mechanism to crush or cut the plastic to save space.

Fatma Al-Ashmawi, Committee of Support & Guidance member at the Association

• Transportation to deliver the plastic materials to the storage facility or the factory. • Volunteers to print pamphlets to raise awareness about the project. • Personnel to manage the project. Others: • Educational help, for instance, those willing to offer transportation/car pools for children with disabilities who want a ride to school and don’t have the facilities, stationery, and others.

Who can avail of these services? • The Entertainment Centre, belonging to the association, will be launched soon in Salmaniya garden. It will offer a space where persons with disabilities can interact with persons without disabilities – any individual/ institution who wants to visit is welcome. • Summer Camps are held every year and last for usually four weeks where volunteers interact with children with disabilities, teach them fun things to do or just spend some quality time with them. This year, it will be held after Ramadan and the Eid holidays – any individual/institution willing to support is welcome. • Financial Support is always welcome.

As of now, Bahraini persons with disabilities are entitled to all services and support. Though, the association is trying to make the same, if not financial help, available to other nationalities.

What recent developments have taken place? • Though the project is still in its nascent stage, it has tremendous potential. Factories, especially aluminum ones have a lot of plastic waste that can be tapped. This will generate a monthly income of thousands of Bahraini

The container in front of the association's office near Isa Cultural Centre in Adliya where you can dump all your plastic

What is the broader role of the association? In addition to various activities and projects, the association also contributes toward formation of strategies for persons with disabilities in Bahrain, as per international standards. There are seven elements including education, health, infrastructure and financial stability. Educational rights have improved but health still remains a major issue. For instance, at health centres, there are cases where medical staff may not know how to deal with people with disabilities. al media. lution on soci rain, Join the revo ah B or ef cl cy Hashtag #re lBAH and share ia nt tag @confide cling ideas your recy with us.

dinars which means the association can buy one or two chairs every month. They are in talks with concerned companies who are waiting for their existing recycling contracts to end. • The Royal Academy of Police recently joined the list of participants and has promised to use its premises as a storage point for those who want to drop off the plastic they have collected. • At present, 39 schools are on the list of participants. • An individual recently contributed 20 plastic paint drums weighing a lot which contributed to more funds. nyone who holds a passport from a country with visa restrictions will understand the travails of last-minute travel plans. Being spontaneous is not an option when it takes you three to six weeks to obtain a visa in order to travel to the destination of your choice! This is where a destination such as the Maldives becomes your saving grace. With visa-free access for passport holders of almost every country, this beautiful archipelago of 1,190

islands is the ideal destination for a last minute getaway, and is literally a hop skip and jump away from Bahrain! With over 200 inhabited islands and 105 resorts, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation options, which range from uber luxurious five-star hotels to rustic family-run bed & breakfasts. We decided to go with heritage and history, and picked Kurumba Maldives. The resort started its operations in 1972, on what was then a small

uninhabited coconut plantation, became the first full-fledged resort in the Maldives, and is now one of the most exquisite in the region, offering 180 rooms from Pool Villas to Beach Bungalows, more dining options than you can wish for, and enough activities and excursions to keep you entertained for the duration of your trip. Waiting for us right as we emerged from immigration was the ever-smiling Russell, who was to be our Man Friday for the duration of our trip. At Kurumba, you get your own personal butler

s “With visa-free acces of for passport holders y, almost every countr elago this beautiful archip e of 1,190 islands is th a ideal destination for and last minute getaway, is literally a hop skip and jump away from Bahrain!” when you book one of the villas. Life, truly, in the lap of luxury! The ten-minute boat ride to the resort gave us our first glorious views of the gorgeous blue waters that the Maldives is known for. After a traditional welcome with flower garlands, check-in was a breeze and we were swiftly escorted to our home for the next few days: one of the 4 Presidential Pool Villas at the resort. The schedule for the next few days consisted exclusively of water-based activities: lounging around in the private pool in our villa, lazing on the beach, swimming in the gorgeous Indian Ocean, or enjoying one of the many excursions by boat. After all, the reason you come to the Maldives is to enjoy the magnificent blue!

Snorkelling in the deep blues!

Rafting away!

The indoor pool proved extremely handy for snorkeling lessons, delivered by our butler Russell. Kurumba is one of the premier snorkelling and diving resorts in the Maldives and has a dive centre that will equip you with the skills and gear for snorkelling and diving, which is an experience not to be missed. The islands’ house reef is rich with marine life frolicking amongst the coral growth. The Kurumba lagoon is a very reasonable 1 to 1.5 metres in depth and is surrounded by wave breakers, which reduce waves and currents for ideal snorkelling conditions. If snorkeling isn’t your cup of tea and you still want to take in the marine life, then opt for the glassbottom boat ride. These boats are fitted with glass panels at the bottom and you can enjoy the vibrant marine life as you glide over the reefs the variety of coral, the colourful fish, the stingrays and even turtles. The Sunset and Dolphin Discovery Cruise takes you further out to sea where you chase dolphins and the sunset. Set sail in the late afternoon, enjoy your drinks on board as you watch the super-smart creatures perform tricks and vie for your attention, and head back to the resort at dusk. The only worry you have while holidaying in the Maldives is squeezing in another hour of sunning yourself on the beach. A relaxing session at the spa

The Presidential Pool Villa Bedroom

would seem redundant, but it’s really not, and my session at Kurumba’s Veli Spa proved it. Set in the lush, green garden of the resort, the Spa incorporates traditional Maldivian therapies in its menu. Dhivehibeys, traditional and indigenous Maldivian herbal medicines and remedies that have been passed from generation to generation, make their way into various treatments and therapies. An unforgettable experience is the ‘Spa Under the Stars’: just lay under the night sky, surrounded by the Indian ocean, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves while you enjoy a massage, and feast on champagne and chocolate dipped fruits! To sum it all up, is that the sparkle of waves against the palette of an ocean sunset makes Kurumba the perfect backdrop for unforgettable moments. With its convenient location (just a 10-minute boat transfer from the airport or Malé), wide range of accommodation from Pool Villas to Beach Bungalows, and many dining venues and entertainment areas with a meandering pathway within lush tropical gardens, the resort is exquisite. This luxury comes with a very reasonable price tag as well. The Presidential Pool Villa (which I stayed at) starts from US$ 1108 (approximately BD400) per room per night, while Superior Rooms are available from US$394.30 (approximately BD150) per room per night. Both prices include breakfast and all taxes. For more info visit kurumba.com

Dangerous Prepaid Single Add-on, Multiple Services

Zain Bahrain recently launched a first-of-its-kind prepaid package in the Kingdom. Mohammed Mahroon

L

ast year, Zain Bahrain’s series of strategically created bill board ads took the island by surprise. The telecom operator’s done it again – this time with Dangerous Prepaid, a package offering a wide range of services – free calls to Batelco, VIVA and Zain, unlimited 4G data usage, free international calls and a whole lot more for just BD1 per week! “It’s a single add-on offering all the features customers are looking for,” says Mohammed Mahroon, Marketing Expert at Zain Bahrain. “Previously with Zain and currently with other mobile operators in the Kingdom, customers go through the hassle of subscribing to several individual add-ons for data, voice and calls; Dangerous Prepaid makes customers’ lives easier.”

competition in Bahrain is really intense. There are new offers being rolled out every other day and you see a lot of price wars in the market. At the end of the day, the most creative operator wins the race. We always try to be different and Dangerous Prepaid is a classic example of this.” Zain’s claims to creativity and uniqueness are backed by their operating style. If you enter their office in Seef, you’ll know what we’re talking about; it’s spacious, colourful, well-lit and informal (yet professional!) – just the

Zain Bahrain recently launched its new state-ofthe-art network which offers super-fast download speeds and stronger coverage as well as superior calling experience using the HD Voice along with the latest 4G LTE technology allowing customers faster

We know the package is cost effective for the subscriber, but what about the company? “We conducted an extensive study before launching this product,” says Ahmed Haqiqi, Marketing Specialist at Zain Bahrain. “We have a check list including technical, marketing and other aspects and have ensured that this package will be profitable for the company too.”

Customer Service & Creativity The duo believe that this new product is in line with Zain Bahrain’s aim to constantly enhance customer experience by launching a series of user-friendly and exciting offers and services. When asked about the challenges they faced, Mohammed Mahroon says, “The

Money Grows On Trees! Angela McDonough, Managing Director at Star Global Investments discusses smart ways to use your money.

T

he first time we saw Angela McDonough, we sensed she wasn’t a run of the mill corporate executive; though she was wearing what could pass off as formal, day wear, she flaunted a hair style that effortlessly catches the eye and carried a tote with an artsy print. A gentle but steady handshake later, we began talking and that’s when we confirmed our

76

impression about the investment specialist with over two decades of experience in European properties – France, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Germany, Belgium and others. Angela started working at the age of 18 and cut her teeth at a British government office. A passion for growth and the willingness to learn led her up the

ladder quicker than others. “I always liked helping and supporting people,” she said. She worked on social issues like substance abuse and economic ones like unemployment. She also had to research on capital growth, construction, property, manufacturing, retail and other sectors to compare the UK with other countries and track its growth. She believes this experience proved to be a strong foundation for her career.

investment Bahrain Confidential May 2015

“I never thought I’d get into property consulting,” she said. “My husband and I were always interested in investing in property but that was from a purely personal point of view.” So what did Angela actually want to do? “I thought I’d become a Fashion designer! I love the arts, especially fashion and music and I truly believe you can make any dream come true so who knows maybe some of my clothing designs will make the runway yet! I’ve spent the majority of my life helping people connect with their dreams and which often involves them

reaching a financial goal whether that be to build a retirement fund, a successful business or just to own that special holiday home abroad. If I can help then I will. Angela moved to the Middle East 5 years ago but before that she had gained some personal experience in investing in foreign markets. One day she was sitting by the poolside on holiday and got chatting to some holidaymakers who were getting a pretty raw deal from a developer whom they’d purchased through. She decided to represent this group of property owners and approached the developer to try and find some solutions. The solution put forward involved Angela selling some properties which would free up some cash for the developer and in doing so they would offer her a commission! The rest is history. She already had a

property investment company in the UK so adding this new division was a great platform. Angela is now in the process of setting up a branch of this company in Bahrain so that she can offer her services more widely. She will have an office and real estate shop but in the meantime, she is very happy to meet people with view to helping them any which way she can. She believes that too many people are just saving their money but not making it work for them and that is primarily because they don’t understand enough about the investment markets. Angela is here to educate people and help them make better informed decisions so that they can eventually reach their goals.

Investment 101 – by Angela McDonough There are two sets of people, high net-worth and those trying to get there. Jewellery The trick here is cutting out the middle-men, this would apply to everything, right? For instance; a pair of diamond ear-rings has passed through many hands before reaching the final destination and as such have a huge mark-up. So, buy your gems at source (if you can) then get your local jewellery factory to custom make a pair of ear-rings and you will get the same product (or better if designed especially for you) for half the price. You also want to think about which gems are most precious and right now the supply of tanzanite is drying up so that would be a gem worth investing in. Property The most successful people in the world have large property portfolios’. If you’re starting out, you must invest safely. Go for growth zones and reputable developers. Right now the Eurozone is really hot for investors because the euro is the weakest it has been for 13years. This effectively means you can buy a property a 2 bedroom property instead of a one bedroom for the same cost, so we are talking tens of thousands that can be saved due to the currency exchange alone. Add these substantial currency gains to a guaranteed rental from good developers and capital growth then some more currency gains if you sell when the euro is strong again and you are well on your way to living the dream!!!!

Letter From Bahrain

John Ridley reminisces about the shipping forecast.

John R Ridley

when my mother popped into my room on her way to bed, removing the radio from under the sheets. Many years later, the pirate radio stations gone, and during the early days of my BBC career, I was often at work in the studio control room. As we broadcast the shipping forecast, once again, I could picture the distant sea farers listening to us as they plotted their course through the seas. Later in my career, living and working for the BBC on remote, windswept islands, from Shetland to The Hebrides, I too would come to depend upon the shipping forecast; my work, often involving the charter of a fishing boat or light aircraft, was governed by the weather forecast for the next 24 hours.

“I’m an island person at heart; my love of the sea has been inherited by my son.”

I

’m sure it’s a very British thing, like many others; I grew up with it, and it’s remained a part of my life; the opening music for the late night broadcast, “Sailing By”, composed by Ronald Binge, remains evocative to this day. Broadcast on BBC Radio 4 early every morning, and last thing at night - in a gentle, quite tone as everyone, or at least those in the comfort of their homes, settled down to sleep. I am, as British readers will know, referring to the shipping forecast. As a young boy, the names of shipping areas, Viking, Cromarty, Forth, Tyne, Dogger, Lundy, Fair Isle, Southeast Iceland, conjured up images of fishermen huddled in the

78

bridge of their ships, drinking hot chocolate, as their vessels were battered by force ten gales. These were the days of the offshore radio stations, broadcasting from ships in the North and Irish Seas; the pirate radio stations, especially Radio North Sea and Radio Caroline, were popular with those of us who, at the time, where in our late teens and twenties. In stormy weather, from the comfort of our bedrooms, we listened to the radio presenters doing their best to play records as the ships were battered by storms - on a couple of occasions the ships sank. I would often go to sleep with my transistor radio under the bed clothes, listing through headphones; I’d vaguely stir

Even today, whether I’m in the UK, Bahrain, Rome, or travelling, I still love to listen to the shipping forecast, usually on the internet - rather than the far more nostalgic long wave broadcast fading in and out. The shipping forecast takes me back to a simpler time, and reminds me that I’ve spent most of my life living next to the sea or on islands, from Shetland to Bahrain, and Masirah; I’m an island person at heart; my love of the sea has been inherited by my son.

CAR NEWS Hyundai at the 2015 Seoul Motor Show Hyundai Motor Company celebrated its presence at the 2015 Seoul Motor Show with the world premiere of an all-new design concept, the ‘Enduro’ lifestyle urban crossover utility vehicle (CUV). Additional debuting models included a high-performance coupe concept, the RM15, and the company’s first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, the Sonata PHEV.

The R

M15

The ‘Enduro’ CUV

Making its global debut at the show, the ‘Enduro’ lifestyle urban crossover utility vehicle (CUV) concept’s name is derived from ‘Endurance.’ This dynamic model visually combines a SUV look with rally motorcycle. Its C-pillars are fitted with a unique aerodynamic air-blade to reduce drag and the sideskirts incorporate step bars for easier loading or unloading of the roof rack. Inside Enduro, the cabin is styled with the same enthusiasm and passion as the exterior. Small details of the interior are exploited to reinforce the Enduro’s sporty and upbeat image. The design of the trunk turns it into a durable, flexible space, with versatile drawer-style compartments that can safely accommodate a broad range of lifestyle sports equipment.

The RM15

Its core structure is based on an aluminum space frame, clothed in light, stiff body panels formed in carbonfibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) – together achieving a significant weight saving compared to a conventional all-steel vehicle. The body panels are painted in the signature colours of the company’s ‘N’ brand (pale blue, black, red and Hyundai mid-blue). The RM 15 is powered by the brand’s Theta 2.0-liter T-GDI engine generating 300 ps at 6,000 rpm and accelerating from 0-100 km in just 4.7 seconds.

The Sonata PHEV

The Volvo XC90

The All New Volvo XC90

The Volvo flagship model is the most anticipated SUV from Volvo with class leading innovative features, lowest emissions and outstanding performance. The Volvo XC90 is the new face of Volvo. Designed for demanding audiences, the new XC90 is the embodiment of contemporary Swedish design clubbed with the latest technology features, exceptional comfort experience and Volvo’s pioneering Safety technology. This modern SUV from Volvo is scheduled to launch soon in Bahrain.

The company’s first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, the Sonata PHEV has all-electric range of up to 38.4 km, farther than any other midsize PHEV salon. The 50 kW-electric motor is 32 per cent more powerful than the motor in the regular Sonata Hybrid and allows EV operation at higher speeds.

The Volvo XC90 has already received prestigious awards including the renowned Red Dot ‘Best of the Best’ Product Design Award and the ‘Connected Car of the Year’ Award in 2014 by 01net.com in France. Motorcity has also announced a special offer on the entire Volvo range applicable to all the Golf Challenge tournament participants, the Royal Golf Club staff and members. The All-new Cayenne GTS

P

orsche Centre Bahrain, Behbehani Bros celebrated the arrival of the all-new Porsche Cayenne GTS in the Kingdom. Also on show and welcomed to the country for the first time is the thrilling entry-level Cayenne featuring a powerful 3.6-litre V6 engine.

accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds when equipped with the Sport Chrono Package. These figures are 0.5 and 0.6 seconds faster than in the previous model. The car reaches a top speed of 262 km/h. As standard it has a sports exhaust system, which provides the resonant GTS sound!

With a sporting bloodline which can be traced back to the legendary 904 Carrera GTS of 1963, the Cayenne GTS extends Porsche’s unrivalled heritage of automotive excellence further into the modern era. Representing the brand’s latest developments in evolving racing technology from the track to the road, the Cayenne GTS exemplifies the three letter title reserved for Porsche’s most sporty models. The very same DNA is clear to see in the new entry-level Cayenne which boasts a more efficient power unit, reducing consumption, as well as an even more comprehensive selection of standard features. Boasting a 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine that is configured as a sports engine, and a chassis that makes the GTS the most agile of Cayenne models, it wears its GTS badge with pride and conviction. Not only does the engine contribute to this, so does the Porsche Active Suspension Management system with its sporty tuning and ride height lowered by 24 mm with the standard steel suspension – or by 20 mm with the optional air suspension. The Cayenne GTS

The sporting characteristics are also apparent in the car’s interior with eight-way electrically adjustable GTS sports seats in leather/Alcantara upholstery featuring GTS lettering on the headrests fitted as standard. The interior GTS package is optionally available in carmine red or rhodium silver with the rev counter face, decorative stitching, headrest lettering and safety belts in contrasting colour. The stylish interior of the Cayenne GTS

The new Cayenne base model features a 3.6-litre V6 naturally aspirated engine, which delivers 300 hp, taking the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package. This results in a 0.2 seconds improvement from the previous incarnation while at 230 km/h, the top speed matches the level of the previous model. Like all new Cayenne models it benefits from the general efficiency measures, such as coasting, Auto Stop/Start function and thermal management, as a result fuel consumption drops by 0.7 l/100 km to 9.2 l/100 km.

The entry level Cayenne and the sporty Cayenne GTS are available for order as of now, their basic retail prices in Bahrain are BD28,300 and BD38,500 respectively.

Stories Of A Trailing Spouse Connect with the city you live in, says Maria Sorger.

Maria Sorger

I bit into my freshly baked, warm Man’oushe – every mouthful loaded with childhood memories – and relished the moment. Dubai is indeed a melting pot of cultures; it is these small pleasures that remind the expats in the city of how there a little bit of each of their countries in the Dubai metropolis; if you walk along the streets of Bur Dubai the aroma of spices and curries assail your senses; when you visit the souk in Deira you find shawarmas and kebabs being sold as fresh, ready-to-go, street food. I finished my delicious Manoushe and felt very content, full and happy – happy to have re-lived, in a foreign land, a wonderful experience that took me back to my roots. Wherever your travels take you, try to discover and experience unique and special moments that will connect you to the city you live in by creating a personal story, something that you will cherish long after you leave the place.

D

ubai is often referred to as the city of ‘glitz and glamour’, of ‘tall towers and luxurious buildings’, where people are busy shuttling from work to conferences and back home, wishing at times they could stretch the day to more than 24 hours. But like every major city or town in the world there is another side that visitors or even residents don’t always see or experience – it is the side that opens its heart and soul to tell you a personal story, to touch you with a unique experience. I recently visited Dubai and on my way to the Sheikh Zayed Road metro station, I noticed a number of restaurants on the side street – which are probably catering to the thousands of people working in the tall business towers there. These little eateries, dotted along one of the busiest thoroughfares in the

114

UAE, serve an array of culinary fare. With my innate curiosity I walked to one side street , in search of a ‘coffee to go’and there in front of me was a sign that said ‘Man’oushe Street’ (for those not familiar with the Man’oushe, it is a Lebanese breakfast food consisting of flat dough with thyme or cheese topping and baked in the oven like a pizza). Resistance was futile as the humble – and calorie laden – Man’oushe is my absolute favorite breakfast item - I grew up on this stuff. I quickly ordered and sat down on one of the tables outside. A restaurant nearby serving Arabic breakfast had Fairuz – the famous Lebanese singer – blaring from loudspeakers as waiters set up tables and prepared shishas in the small courtyard. If it would not be for the Emirates Towers jutting out right in front of my eyes this could have been a scene from my home country Lebanon.

PAUL’s Mille-feuille Collection The all-new Mille-feuille collection by the fantastic French restaurant owes its name to the large number of pure butter pastry layers used in its fabrication. Imagine an ultra-fresh pastry produced daily in the workshops. It has gotten our mouths watering already, considering how each one in our office has a sweet tooth! History for us fellas! The pastry cream of Mille-feuille was most likely invented in the Middle Ages, and appeared in a recipe book for the first time in 1691. In some European countries, the Mille-feuille is named ‘Napoléon’, which is a reference to the town of Naples from where it originated. PAUL’s Mille-feuille has earned its reputation for excellence by choosing its square shape and using the authentic recipe, which will remain a closely guarded secret, thus ensuring its uniqueness. Now the exciting part is that new variations have been created to pay homage to the must-have dessert. PAUL mille-feuilles now comes in many flavours and colours! A collection of 5 new flavours is now available: Pistachio Raspberry, Mango Coco, Apple Vanilla, Passion Fruit and chocolate or Pistachio and Gianduja Chocolate, in addition to the classic Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry mille-feuilles. Treat yourselves to this deliciousness!

Ingredients: • 480gms flour • 4tsp baking soda • 60gms butter • 100gms sugar • 2 eggs • Approximately 1 ½ cups milk For the egg wash: • 1 egg beaten mixed with ½ cup milk

What’s cooking with AHSAN? is a cook book of favourite recipes. Ahsan who lives in Bahrain has learning disabilities but that doesn’t stop him from following his dreams! Bake these elegant ENGLISH SCONES from his recipe book, for your high tea and serve them with fresh mascarpone and jelly!

Preparation: • Sieve flour and baking soda together. Cream butter and sugar. • Add eggs to creamed mixture and beat until well combined. • Add the milk and flour stirring gently until dough forms • Knead lightly on a floured board. Don’t over-knead or the dough will toughen. Roll the dough to approximately 2cm thick and cut out 5 rounds with a pastry cutter • Brush with egg wash • Bake at 200 degrees centigrade for approximately 15 minutes. Thank you, Kay King, coach for students with learning disabilities, for making Ahsan’s dream a reality. Support autism by buying Ahsan’s book at Jashanmal stores/The Bookcase, Budaiya for BD5 only.

Horoscopes GEMINI: 21 May - 21 June

Last Word Vrooommmm – we’ve done it once again! We’ve put ourselves on the map thanks to yet another successful Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix.

There’s nothing like a dose of high-octane burn, is there? Especially if you’re a car and racing enthusiast; it’s a totally different feeling, watching international racers, zooming across the track in high-tech sports cars, wanting to emulate them. Though, we need to remember, real racers are found on the track – not on the road! Everyone’s been raving about the new traffic rules. Wonder how many of us are actually making an effort to follow them; follow them, not because we don’t want to pay a heavy fine or spend the night in jail, but because it’s the right thing to do. Integrity! It’s all about doing what’s correct even when no one’s watching. The past year has seen numerous accidents and some, really horrible. Loss of property is one thing, but loss of life…well, even more than the victim, it’s the people left behind that have to ‘bear the brunt’! And if you break the rules, probably, just probably, you deserved it. But what about that someone who happened to be driving beside you or the person crossing the road who wasn’t at fault? Rules are made to broken, yes, but not on when you’re on the road. Stay safe!

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
