She was first elected to the BC Legislature in 1996 and by 2001 where she held several executive positions such as Minister of Education, Minister of Children and Families and Deputy Premier. In 2011, Premier Clark got back into families to make life better for families.

It’s based on low taxes, fewer regulations and smaller government. At the heart of the BC Jobs Plan is Premier Christy Clark’s focused plan for developing BC’s vast reserves of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). LNG could generate thousands of jobs, and help fund our children’s education and lead to lower taxes. At a time when multiculturalism was not in vogue, it was the NDP that stood up and advocated against racism and discrimination. Unlike today, fighting against racism was not politically popular but the NDP stood side by side with the ethnic minority community because it was the right thing to do. It is for this reason, first and foremost, that I chose to join the NDP to further develop my political involvement. I was elected to the BC Provincial Legislature in 1996. It was in this electoral cycle that British Columbians elected Chinese-Canadians as Members of the Legislative Assembly for the first time. I was also selected to serve in Cabinet and became the first Chinese Canadian Cabinet Minister in the history of BC. This year marks my 20th anniversary in public life. All were included on the leaked emails revealing backroom discussions about the committee’s final report. It is clear from the emails that part of the role of the committee was to redirect blame for the problems at Burnaby Hospital away from the Liberal government. It also appears part of the motivation was to rig the process so that any hospital development would take place on the current grounds, which would allow the government to sell off the Willingdon lands – which were purchased for use in health care – as part of the Liberal government’s fire sale of public assets - a desperate attempt to balance the provincial budget before next year’s election. It is also troubling that several of the emails were sent to the Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid and MLA Harry Bloy’s personal email accounts, and those of political staffers working in government; personal emails are not subject to searches under Freedom of Information legislation, so using those addresses may be one way of avoiding oversight. The minister claims this was an oversight, but it’s troubling nonetheless. While some members of the committee participated in good faith, the people of Burnaby can’t trust a process that was so completely manipulated by Liberal operatives who have obviously put the needs of health care in Burnaby a distant second to their own partisan political needs. With the report already more than a month overdue, we challenge the minister to release it immediately so the residents of Burnaby can see the results of this fixed process. VK

What we know as the foundational assets of a developed country that we have today could crumble in no time if we do not devise an effective means for a more sustainable environment for collective growth. The ever widening income gap needs to be disrupted to provide more opportunities for social mobility. These are the promises of Adrian Dix and the BC NDP. A more equal society and a secure social welfare system are pivotal to step forward to a better society. The journey beyond the May election will be unencumbered. The HST system plunged the province into the pit of federal debt on top of a heap of uncertainty from the post-subprime mortgage economic recession. Nevertheless, Dix’s philosophy and policy direction embodied in his everyday practice of those values have allowed me to see the characters of leaders such as Chamlong and Lula. With the history of these leaders as our witness, Dix’s government will pay off all the debt and safely sail against the violent currents of the world economic recession to build a collectively prosperous liberal democratic province that we envision. This May, we hope to see a government that changes for the better taking a practical step towards an all prospering community. VK

I have always believed in being proactive in the communities in which I serve. o far, I’ve knocked on the doors of more than 10,000 voters. It’s my experience that most people are pleasantly surprised to meet a politician on their doorstep and welcome the opportunity to talk about issues that affect their daily lives.

There’s the university graduate who has three minimum wage jobs to pay off a crushing student debt. There’s the young mother who quit a good job because she can’t find affordable childcare. There’s the senior who is able to stay in his own home only because his granddaughter moved in with him – so she could go to SFU. And, there are the small business owners whose businesses have suffered since the HST was imposed. It seems to me that voters are looking for some recognition by their political representatives of the reality of their lives. They see through grandiose promises and are repulsed by personal attacks. By contrast, Adrian Dix has vowed to run a positive election campaign with “change for the better: one practical step at a time”. I’m proud to be part of his team. Education and skills training are our number one priority. New Democrats will re-institute a tax on banks and use that money for needs-based student grants – so more young British Columbians can get the education they need. And we will roll-back corporate tax cuts to 2008 levels, so we can free up carbon tax revenue to pay for important infrastructure like transit, as well as other environmental initiatives. These are real solutions that will benefit all British Columbians. And they are resonating on the doorstep. 46

While living in China I firsthandedly witnessed the effects that unmonitored industry and resource extraction have on a landscape and people in the name of “progress”. In my view, under this governing body Canada was beginning to replicate the negative idealisms that were prominent in China. But when I see petitions rarely garnering change, and activism making an initial impact only to be snuffed out by media and repetition, I felt there was no other method to involve myself.
