TECHNOLOGY CLASSES AT PRINCETON PUBLIC LIBRARY Spring, 2013


PRINCETON PUBLIC LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY CLASSES SPRING, 2013

Princeton Public Library offers a variety of computer courses for the public. No registration required, unless otherwise indicated. Seating is first come, first seated and is limited. The second session for our two-part classes will be reserved for students who attended the first session. Class descriptions are online at www.princetonlibrary.org (click on Attend, then Technology). Classes are in the second floor Technology Center, unless otherwise indicated. Skill Levels Novice: Student has no prior computer experience. Basic: Student knows how to turn on a computer, operate a mouse and launch software. Intermediate: In addition to basic skills, user can navigate various websites, multiple tabs, understand email applications, and download documents, music and photos. Advanced: Student needs to have specific knowledge which is indicated in the class description.

Want to try out our iMacs, but don’t know where to begin? Members of the Princeton Macintosh Users Group will be available to offer tips, tricks, and answers to all of your Apple product questions. iPad 101

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 7-8:30 p.m. For those with a new iPad or who just want to see what the hype is all about, this class, taught by Mac specialist Caitlin Trought, covers what the device can do, its basic operation and some fun apps. Skill Level: Basic

New! Tools to Create Infographics

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 6:30-8:30 p.m. In this two-hour session, John LeMasney shows you how to make interesting, sharable graphics that help you make your point. We’ll look at some examples of great infographics, recreate one or two, and then use what you learned to make an original personal infographic. Skill Level: Intermediate

Google Drive: Online Storage Made Easy

Thursday, Feb. 21, 7-8:30 p.m. Join Lynette Young, digital media expert, as she demonstrates Google Drive, an application that allows you to store your files on Google’s servers, or “in the cloud”. With Google Drive you can access your online files from anywhere, can work with your colleagues in real time, share documents and add comments. Skill Level: Basic Lynette Young

Saturday, Feb. 23, 10-11:30 a.m. Mac specialist, Caitlin Trought covers the basics of starting up a Mac, navigating the desktop and hard drive, and some of the settings. Skill level: Basic

Downloading eBooks

Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2-3 p.m. Learn how you to use eLibraryNJ and Axis360, the library’s free digital e-book collections. Bring your own digital e-reader or mobile device for hands-on help. Participants must have an active library card to use the digital collection. Axis 360 is a digital media platform that works with a free e-reader application called Blio. Skill Level: Basic


Microsoft Excel for Beginners

Session 1: Wednesday, March 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Session 2: Wednesday, March 13, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Become familiar with Microsoft Excel 2007 with training expert Sharon Bancroft. This two-part course includes formatting cells and sheets, adding icons to the Quick Access Toolbar, filling a series of data, creating formulas and charts, sorting and filtering in tables, linking cells, using functions and repeating cells and working with header and footers. Skill Level: Basic

New! Career Resources @ PPL

Thursday, March 7, 10-11 a.m. Public libraries are not only a great place to start your job search but a destination throughout the process. Learn about the resources that Princeton Public Library and other New Jersey public libraries offer and utilize them each step of the way. The session will identify the best resources for resume and cover letter templates, online study tutorials for skill building, software tutorials, identifying job openings, researching the company before the interview and more. This session will demonstrate how to access the variety of databases available to you with the goal of making your job search a great success! Skill Level: Basic

Learning for Life @ Your Library

Friday, March 8, 11 a.m. to noon Whether your interests are in literature, philosophy, math, language, music, art, or elsewhere, Princeton Public Library offers many resources to guide you in your quest for knowledge. This class will cover online sites, our collections, and library services for lifelong learners. Skill Level: Basic

Wordpress Camp for Beginner Bloggers

Session 1: Monday, March 11, 7-8:30 p.m. Session 2: Monday, March 18, 7-8:30 p.m. Interested in creating your own blog? In this two-part course, social media and technology expert, John LeMasney will teach how to start and manage a blog for free through WrodPress. Prior web design experience is not needed.

iPhoto for Beginners

Tuesday, March 12, 1-2:30 p.m. You’ve taken lots of terrific photos, but how do you know how to manage and share these memories in the digital age? In this basic introduction to iPhoto, you’ll learn how to move digital images from your camera or phone to your Mac, do some simple editing and share your photos. Skill Level: Basic

Thursday, March 14, 9:30-11 a.m. Advertising and marketing can get your business noticed, but it can also cost a lot of money. Getting publicity is usually free! Learn some basic techniques to spreading the word about your business or non-profit organization from press release writing to strategies for connecting with the local media. Skill Level: Basic

Thursday, March 14, 2-3 p.m. Learn how you to use eLibraryNJ and One Click Digital, the library’s free digital audiobook collections. Bring your own digital audio device for hands-on help. Participants must have an active library card to use the digital collection. Skill Level: Basic


New! Zinio: Explore the World of Digital Magazines

Friday, March 15, 1-2 p.m. Come learn about Zinio, the newest way to access magazines. Our Zinio collection offers a downloadable selection of 71 popular titles such as Consumer Reports, Newsweek, and National Geographic that you can read on your computer or device. We offer a variety of subject areas including health, home, science and technology, news, cooking, parenting and crafts. Current issues, anytime, anywhere! No due dates! We will also talk about what is available in our print collection and how to access magazines through our subscription databases. You must have a Princeton Public Library card to access Zinio. Please bring your laptop or device if possible. Skill Level: Basic

Video Chatting with Google Hangout

Wednesday, March 20, 7-8:30 p.m. Digital media expert Lynette Young provides an overview of Google’s new video-chatting service that allows users to talk face-to-face from a computer, tablet, or smartphone, as well as host online meetings with up to ten people. Skill Level: Intermediate

iPhone 101

Thursday, March 21, 7-8:30 p.m. Learn the basics of your new iPhone from making phone calls as well as texting, taking pictures, downloading apps, and more! This class will also be helpful to new owners of the iPad since the Operating System on the iPhone and iPad are the same. Skill Level: Basic

Intro to Apple iWork

Saturday, March 23, 10-11:30 a.m. Join Mac expert Caitlin Trought as she demonstrates iWork for Mac. You will learn to easily create and design beautiful documents, spreadsheets and presentations for your school or work-related activities. Skill level: Intermediate

Advanced iPhoto: Maximize Your Memories

Tuesday, March 26, 1-2:30 p.m. You’ve learned the basics of using iPhoto, and are inspired to learn more! In this class, we will explore some of iPhoto’s more powerful features, including the advanced editing tools, slideshow-iTunes integration, and face recognition. During a portion of the class time, students will be able to practice their new skills, so bring some photos! Skill Level: Intermediate

New! iMovie for Beginners

Monday, April 8, 7-8:30 p.m. Wondering what to do with all of those video memories that you know you could be enjoying more? Are they trapped on your phone, camera or sd card? This class will introduce the beginner to Apple’s iMovie application and will cover topics such as importing movie files, organizing your clips and simple editing. Skill Level: Basic

New! Ten Things to Know About Your Android Tablet

Tuesday, April 9, 7-8:30 p.m. In this session, technologist, John LeMasney will walk you through the basics of your Android tablet. He’ll show you how to navigate, share his favorite applications, talk about some differences between Android and Apple, and other tips for everyday use and efficiency. Skill Level: Basic

Session 1: Monday, April 15, 3-4 p.m. Session 2: Monday, April 22, 3-4 p.m. This two-part course will introduce the novice computer user to basic computer terminology, navigating the desktop, and opening and using software. Students will also become familiar with searching the internet and improve basic search strategies. Students may bring their laptops to use during the course. Tuesday, April 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Have you seen those beautiful posters that visualize and demonstrate statistics in fun and elegant ways? Those are called infographics, and you can make them with some time, practice, and free design tools. In this two hour session, John LeMasney shows you how to make interesting, sharable graphics that help you make your point. Wednesday, April 17, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Easily create professional PowerPoint presentations taught by Microsoft Office instructor, Sharon Bancroft. Learn to create professional presentation including adding and arranging slides and become familiar with editing objects and pictures. Learn to enhance presentations with themes and to create a slide show. Skill Level: Basic

New! Let’s Pin! Learn to Use Pinterest

Thursday, April 18, 10-11:30 a.m. We’ll take a look at the 3rd most popular social network (after Facebook and Twitter) that is more addicting than any magazine or website. Pinterest is a virtual collection of inspiration boards that you create, moderate and share. Collect recipes, plan your dream living room, curate a vintage clothing collection, and so much more! In this class we’ll go through basic steps of creating an account and how to add pins to build your Pinterest page. Come see what the buzz is all about! Skill Level: Basic

Friday, April 26, 10-11 a.m. Have you ever thought about listing your items on eBay but don’t know where to start? This class will take you through all the steps: opening an account, researching price points, and listing your item. We will also discuss some tips for photography and descriptions. Join the fun!
