Welcome Invitation from the Chair and the Artistic Director

W

elcome to The Princeton Festival’s 2015 Season, celebrating the performing arts. Each June, The Princeton Festival presents a variety of events featuring outstanding professional and emerging artists. The Festival strives for artistic discovery, innovation and excellence. The mix varies each year and includes orchestral and chamber music, recitals, jazz concerts, musical theater, dance, world music, a piano competition and opera. Another component of the Festival is education for audiences of all ages. In this realm we offer an extensive public lecture series at several venues in the Princeton area together with educational initiatives that reach underserved communities. Over the past eleven years The Princeton Festival has grown in stature and recognition and has received four awards from the National Endowment for the Arts. Every May and June, about 250 professional artists and seasonal production staff descend on Princeton to work for the Festival. These artists come from all corners of the United States and occasionally from abroad. Their residency ranges from two days to two months depending on their role. Many of our artists stay with private hosts, who enjoy being at the center of the Festival’s creative team. The Festival is now attracting audiences from beyond the tri-state area, with patrons from as far away as Florida and Oregon. We hope that you will share in our vision to build a multi-dimensional summer arts festival right here in Princeton. The Princeton Festival thanks all of you who have supported us in enriching the greater Princeton community for the past ten years. If you would like to join our team of dedicated donors and volunteers, please write to us at info@princetonfestival.org or call (609) 759-0379. We hope you will enjoy this program. Musical Synopsis An eclectic group of sixth graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyperallergic speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. With an engaging, tuneful score by William Finn and a sweet, funny book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee causes audiences to fall in love, both with the show itself and its “perspicacious,”“jocular,” and “effervescent” spellers.

olfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro has something for everyone: screwball comedy, a touching love story, and uplifting moral sentiment. The opera is an adaptation of Beaumarchais’ 1784 play that humorously attacks aristocratic privilege in pre-revolutionary Europe. Mozart’s music vividly illustrates the characters’ emotions and relationships and The Marriage of Figaro remains one of the most endearing works in the operatic repertory.

Please join us for a “Meet the Artists” reception following the opening performance in the McCarter West Lobby on June 13. June 13: This performance will end at approximately 11pm. June 21 and June 28: These performances will end at approximately 6:30pm.

Opera Synopsis ACT I

It is the wedding day of the servants Figaro and Susanna. Susanna is wary of their chamber’s proximity to the Count’s rooms; she believes the Count wants her. Figaro swears to outsmart the Count. Marcellina and Bartolo reveal that Figaro owes Marcellina money and must marry her if he cannot repay. The pageboy Cherubino laments that he is to be sent away because the Count caught him with the gardener’s daughter, Barbarina. Cherubino adores all the palace women, especially the Countess. Hearing the Count approach, he hides and overhears the Count woo Susanna. The Count hides when music master Basilio approaches. As the chamber occupants are revealed, chaos ensues. Figaro enters reminding the Count that he vowed to abolish the tradition of the master’s right to sleep with peasant girls on their wedding night. The Count declares that Cherubino is to be sent to the army.

ACT II

The Countess mourns her husband’s fading affections. Figaro and Susanna explain their plan to trick the Count into believing that the Countess has a lover and to disguise Cherubino so he can stay at the palace. Susanna disguises Cherubino as a girl. The Count arrives and Cherubino hides in the dressing room. Sure that his wife is concealing a lover, the Count leaves with her to find tools to open the door. Susanna frees Cherubino, who flees. The Count and Countess return to find only Susanna. Figaro joins them; Antonio the gardener enters, furious that someone trampled the flowers. Figaro pretends that it was he, but Antonio produces a paper he found: Cherubino’s army commission. Figaro asserts that he brought the document back to have it sealed. Marcellina, Bartolo, and Don Basilio burst in with the marriage contract for Marcellina and Figaro; Figaro’s plans are thrown into confusion.

ACT III

Susanna declares to the Count that she will submit to him in return for a dowry to pay Figaro’s debt so they can marry. Realizing the trickery, the Count becomes angry. The Count summons the lawyer Don Curzio, hoping to force Figaro to marry Marcellina. It is suddenly revealed that Figaro is Marcellina and Bartolo’s long-lost son. All except the Count are delighted. The Countess has Susanna write a note to the Count, suggesting they meet in the garden. A group of peasant girls come to pay tribute to the Countess; a familiar face is with them: Cherubino, still disguised as a girl. He is unmasked and Barbarina asks the Count for permission to marry Cherubino. Wedding festivities commence and the note is passed to the Count.

ACT IV

Figaro finds Barbarina in the garden worrying about losing the pin the Count asked her to return to Susanna as a sign that he understands her note. Figaro hides. Susanna and the Countess enter, disguised as each other. Knowing that Figaro is there, Susanna sings of anticipating love, causing Figaro to wonder. Cherubino arrives and flirts with the woman he believes is Susanna. Not recognizing his wife, the Count breaks it up and leads the supposed Susanna

Opera Synopsis away. Figaro realizes the trick and pretends to pledge his love to the supposed Countess. Susanna is shocked, but learns of the prank and forgives him. Continuing the charade, they allow the Count to find them and he becomes angry. The Countess reveals herself. Realizing his mistake, the Count begs forgiveness, and all rejoice.

Lecture Series All lectures are free and open to the public. Mozart 1784–1786 and Le Nozze di Figaro Catherine Sprague, historian, Mozart expert and pianist Mozart achieved tremendous success in Vienna during 1784–1786, when he produced a masterpiece every two weeks and took risks such as producing Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) even though the play on which it was based was banned in France and Austria. Images of life in Vienna during this period and excerpts of Mozart’s compositions provide context for how 18th century listeners understood this music. Catherine Sprague’s book “Mozart’s Salzburg Years” will be published by Pendragon Press this year. Tuesday, June 2 at 7pm Princeton Public Library This lecture is co-sponsored by the Princeton Public Library. Figaro, A New Opera Hero Marianne Grey, Princeton University Art Museum Docent The later part of the eighteenth century was a period of great change— politics, social order and customs were all turned upside down. In particular, old notions about marriage for profit and prestige were replaced by the idea of romantic love, which was reflected in the world of opera where the stories began to be concerned with real people as in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. Marianne Grey, a popular lecturer on art and its relation to history, will transport you back to the atmosphere of this age through portraits, cartoons, genre paintings and architectural designs of the time. Thursday, June 4, 7pm Lawrence Library This lecture is co-sponsored by the Lawrence Library. Thursday, June 25, 7:30pm Princeton Public Library A Marriage of Music and Mayhem: Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro Timothy Urban, Professor of Music, Rider University A variegated tapestry of sexual intrigue, deception, class conflict and, ultimately, forgiveness: that is the story woven together by Mozart’s music in his most frequently performed opera, Le Nozze di Figaro. With infinite variety, Mozart crafted music that depicts, with subtle nuance, the wide range of human emotions lying behind the story. Timothy Urban, Professor of Music, singer, and instrumentalist, has been a popular lecturer on Princeton Festival operas for the last eight years, greatly enhancing all opera-goers’ understanding and enjoyment of the performance. Saturday, June 6 at 2pm West Windsor Library This lecture is co-sponsored by the West Windsor Library. Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30pm Princeton Public Library

Lecture Series The Technology of Le Nozze di Figaro Mark Schubin, historian and engineer specializing in opera media technology Last October the Metropolitan Opera transmitted Le Nozze di Figaro live to more than 2000 cinemas worldwide in addition to being available in homes via TV, radio, recordings, downloads, and streams. But what technologies were available in 1786, when this opera premiered in Vienna? You will be amazed to learn what stage and home-media technologies did exist then. Mark Schubin is an Emmy-winning engineer and historian specializing in opera media technology and is the engineer in charge of the Metropolitan Opera media department. Monday, June 15 at 7:30pm
