FESTIVALGUIDE XXXXXX

CONTENTS

Festival Guide 2013 was brought to you in association with Bristol's Big Green Week

Welcome... ..to the 2014 festival guide. You may have heard people say that there are too many festivals around. Back in the ‘good old days’ there was Glastonbury, Reading and maybe a couple of others. Now it seems like there are ten-a-penny, and every weekend in the summer there is, somewhere in the UK, a green field covered in hipsters and their children nodding their heads to music played by men with beards wearing trilbys. But the fact is the dozens of new festivals that have sprung up in the last decade just offer more choice, and if you can’t find one that takes your fancy, then there’s probably something wrong with you. So whether you’re into indie, dance, heavy metal or folk music, whether you’re happiest seeing an outdoor Shakespeare play or lying back on the grass while hot air balloons fly overhead, there’s something for everyone in this guide. The ones in Bristol, or nearby, are marked “local event”. See www.bristolpost.co.uk for news of those as the summer goes on.

Price: Various. Web: www.hayfestival.com BEARDED THEORY Where: Catton Hall, South Derbyshire When: 22-25 May The Stranglers and UB40 headline this one, which won an award last year in the “small festival” category. You won’t need a beard to get in, by the way. Price: £87 for a weekend ticket. Web: www.beardedtheory.co.uk HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN Where: Globe at Hay, Hay-OnWye When: 22 May – 1 June The world’s largest Music and Philosophy festival (not that there is a huge amount of competition) returns with this year’s theme, Jaguarskills at Run to the Sun

‘Heresy, Truth and the Future’. Web: howthelightgetsin.iai.tv RUN TO THE SUN Where: Newquay View Resort, Trevelgue, Newquay When: May 23-26 Last year’s event was widely announced as the last, but the festival, which began way back in 1987, is now under new ownership and returns again this summer. JUNE

DON’T MISS WOMAD 2014 l YOU may notice some common themes

in many of the larger festivals listed in this guide, those being global corporations as sponsors, artists who’ve sold albums in the millions, other artists who just happen to have a new album out, and Paolo Nutini. If something in your soul cries out for a genuine alternative, then head to the Wiltshire countryside (Charlton Park near Malmesbury to be precise) and take in the joyful noise that is Womad. It’s the one festival that can claim to bring the world together, and this year’s line-up features artists from India, Korea, Iran, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Norway, Malaysia, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, Mali, Belarus and..Wales. You can walk in one direction to hear African drumming or a samba band, then retrace your steps to catch some Eastern European folk singing. With a musical offering so diverse, it’s hard to apply any generic terms but the one thing you can say is that it’s broadly music that brings a smile to your face. If you’re worried this all sounds a bit too niche, a bit too varied and strange well, may we redirect you to the V Festival where you can nod your head to mainstream indie rock to your heart’s content. But if you’re prepared to try something new, and engage with a festival that is genuinely for the whole family – thousands of parents have introduced their children to it, and they in turn have done the same with theirs – then why not give Womad a try. It’s not diversity for diversity’s sake, there are big names such as Brighton soul star Alice Russell, the amazingly funky Fat Freddy’s Drop, and legend Bobby Womack. Perhaps appropriately in the year the world remembers the horrors of the Rwandan genocide which tore the country apart 20 years ago, The Good Ones – a trio who survived the massacres – will be bringing their acoustic sound in the dialect of their capital Kigali to Womad. It truly is the world’s premier festival of any kind and sets a stage for some of music’s most promising young hopefuls and biggest stars alike. It’s as strong a line-up as you will see anywhere in the world and impressive even by Glastonbury’s own lofty standards.
