6 simple ideas for living happier in 2016 S

aving money and staying fit are traditional New Year’s resolutions, but overly packed schedules and the materialistic focus of modern day life are inspiring a new goal for many people: to live happier in 2016 and beyond.

“To make 2016 the happiest year ever, think about how you rest, eat and move,” says Matt Johnson, health and performance expert and president of On Target Living. “I am a believer that mental health is directly related to physical health. For most of human existence we have viewed the mind - the head - different from the physical body of the neck down. New research is showing they have everything to do with each other. If you want optimal physical health, you need optimal mental health and happiness. When people are happier they tend to improve all aspects of their life.” Johnson offers six surprisingly simple, yet profoundly effective ways to boost mood and overall happiness in the

new year: 1. Make sleep a priority Getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night is critical for the body to produce hormones that trigger happiness, explains Johnson.

outside of their sport that help them stay hungry, engaged and excited. Find things that help you create balance in your life.” Johnson suggests: * Don’t check email after 8 p.m.

“I am a big fan of always going to bed with a positive attitude,” he says. “If you go to bed angry, worried or stressed, that tends to come back the next day. Do what you can before bed to reset your mood. Read, take a bath, exercise or talk face-to-face. Try to avoid screen time.”

* Go on a date night or family night * Exercise at a time that fits your schedule * Walk during lunch

2. Make more time for family “Over the last 20 years, family time has vanished. Sporting events, projects, work and technology have swallowed this time,” says Johnson. “As the author of the cookbook Target to Table, I think family face-to-face time is the most important part of a healthy family relationship and happiness.” Johnson suggests planning family dinner two to three times a week. “When we start to eat dinner as a family in the home, our health and happiness will follow,” he notes. 3. Carve out whitespace Whitespace is time you dedicate to yourself to refresh, unplug and rejuvenate. This could be making time to do yoga, enjoy a hobby, read, meditate or take a bath.

“People who have hobbies and activities that give them balance tend to be happier,” Johnson says. “If your hobby is texting, checking social media or watching TV, this will set you up for a feeling of emptiness. These things are fine in short periods, but too much will take away what life is giving us.” 4. Achieve work-life balance With the expanse of the Internet and mobile commuting, workers are now connected more than ever before. But this connectedness can get out of control when answering emails 24/7, so work-life balance is important for overall happiness. “We all want to be successful, but with anything you need proper balance,” says Johnson. “If you look at professional athletes, the best ones try to find activities

* Schedule a massage once a month 5. Fuel happiness from within “I believe we have more behavior and mental health issues than we should, and a big part of this is the lack of proper nutrients,” says Johnson. “The most important nutrient when it comes to brain health and mood is omega-3s.” America is one of the most deficient countries when it comes to omega-3s, with an estimated 91 percent of people not getting enough. “The way that I encourage people to get omega-3s is Nordic Naturals orangeflavored Arctic Cod Liver Oil - it tastes like an orange oil drop,” Johnson says. “Adding Nordic Naturals cod liver oil to your diet can be a game changer for your mental health.” 6. Embrace gratitude Thinking of the things you are grateful for can have a dramatic effect on your satisfaction and overall happiness. Do this daily as you wake up or make it a conversation you have with your children right before bed. “Telling yourself you are grateful for your health, family, friends, job and life gives you that pat on the back we all need,” Johnson says. “I also think we don’t tell people how much we appreciate them until they are gone. I encourage everyone to write a handwritten letter to one person each year who made a huge impact in their life. They may not know or maybe you don’t tell them often enough. My last letter was to my Mom. She is the glue in our family.” [Image by ENV Photography]

8 Ways to Tackle Cold and Flu Season this Winter

J

ust how likely are you to come down with a cold or the flu this season? The U.S. routinely sees epidemic levels of the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and 36 states had already reported widespread activity by the end of last December. Each year, on average, 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu, according to the CDC Foundation, costing an estimated $10.4 billion a year in direct medical expenses and an additional $16.3 billion in lost earnings. But take heart - a regular case of flu usually resolves itself in three to seven days, though symptoms like a cough and fatigue may linger longer. Here are eight ways that make prioritizing winter wellness easier, and may help avoid colds and the flu this season (or to feel better if you’re already in the throes):

5

Get (and keep) moving: Staying active is a great way to avoid the cold and flu. Try fun physical activities like ice skating or go for a brisk walk. Regular exercise offers multiple benefits, like boosting your immune system, managing weight and taking care of your body.

6

Disinfect everything: It’s imperative that women clean makeup tools with cleaner, especially their lipsticks or lip balm. Disinfect your cell phones with a sanitizing wipe-remember that you’re constantly touching it and putting it to your face.

7 8

Use tissues when you sneeze or cough: Spare your loved ones from catching your germs. Be sure to equip each room in the house with a box of tissues.

Well-heeled: Tips for picking high heels that are better for your feet

F

ew relationships in a woman’s life are as love-hate as the one she has with her high heels. We love them because they look great and make legs appear longer and leaner, helping petite women appear taller and tall women statuesque. The hate, however, comes when the pain begins.

High heels are the No. 1 culprit of foot pain for women, according to an American Podiatric Medical Association survey. Nearly half of all women wear heels, and 71 percent of heel-wearers say those shoes hurt their feet, the APMA reports. “With many types of heels, like very high stilettos, foot pain is hard to avoid,” says Dr. Matthew G. Garoufalis, a podiatrist and immediate past president of the APMA. “But it is possible for women to find a happy mid-point between great looks and great pain.” The APMA offers some basic guidelines for choosing better-for-you heels: * Nearly half of heel-owners admit to wearing heels 3 inches or higher. That height, however, shifts body weight forward and puts great pressure on the ball of the foot and the toes. Avoid heels higher than 2 inches.

18 Pretty Pear Bride Magazine

* A high stiletto with a pointy, closed toe is the worst type of shoe for your feet. Instead, choose heels with a generous toe box area and extra cushioning at the front of the shoe. A slight heel or wedge encourages your arch to lift. * Consider wearing supportive shoes during your commute and changing into high heels after you arrive at the office. This will help minimize the time your feet spend in heels. * Kitten heels are a good-looking, foot-friendly option for heel wearers. With a heel height typically less than 1 inch, kitten heels deliver a bit of height without the pressure that higher heels can cause. * Be extra careful when wearing platforms or wedges, as these styles can compromise your balance and stability. Very high shoes may lead to ankle rolls and falls. Choose lower platforms and wedges that secure with ankle straps. * During warm weather, peep toes tempt women to show off pretty pedicures. Be aware, however, that peep toes can cause toes to slip forward or overlap, and may even push nail edges into skin, causing an ingrown toenail. * Visit the APMA’s website, www.apma.org, to review a list of podiatrist-approved women’s footwear that has earned the organization’s Seal of Acceptance. * If you experience persistent foot pain, see a podiatrist. Feet shouldn’t hurt all the time, and if they do it may indicate injury, irritation or illness. You can search for a podiatrist in your area by visiting the APMA website. Finally, even if you’re like the average American woman and own nine pairs of high heels, don’t wear them every day. Daily heel-wearing can cause the Achilles tendon (the strong tendon at the back of your ankle) to shrink, increasing your risk of an injury while doing activities in flat shoes, including exercise. “Treat heels like dessert,” Garoufalis says. “Don’t wear them all the time, just on special occasions.” [Image by ENV Photography] Pretty Pear Bride Magazine 19

5 tips for plus size brides looking for the perfect wedding gown 20 Pretty Pear Bride Magazine

n

There has been a shift in the overall fashion industry to include more plussize options for the curvier body

T

he average clothing size of women in the U.S. is 14, and according to The Knot.com’s 2012 Real Weddings Study, the average bride spends approximate $1,211 on her wedding dress which amounts to a $2.1 billion wedding dress market. With such a lucrative business opportunity, it is no wonder that designers have started paying closer attention to the plus-sized bride. Today’s plus-size gowns are not merely replicas of their smaller-sized siblings but rather dresses designed specifically for the curvier client with close attention to her specific needs.

carry a special line of bridal gowns two years ago after hearing the horror stories from so many brides who had difficulty trying on gowns. It now represents 15-20 percent of our business.” Marcinkus, Reed and Zeller all agree that there are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping for the dress: * Set a budget. Wedding gowns are expensive know what your absolute ceiling is before you even begin the search and don’t try on any gowns above your budget.

“There has been a shift in the overall fashion industry to include more plus-size options for the curvier body - with many retailers and designers providing better options for the plus-size client, bridal gowns was a natural progression in this trend. Additionally, television has played a major role in the bridal industry with shows such as ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ and ‘Amsale Girls’,” says Natalie Reed, academic department director for the fashion programs at The Art Institute of Indianapolis.

* Know your body shape. If you’re bottom-heavy try an A-line gown. Apple-shapes look best in empire waists or ballgowns while top-heavy brides with hour glass figures tend to look their best in a trumpet silhouette.

Andrea Marcinkus, program coordinator for the fashion programs at The Illinois Institute of Art Schaumburg, shares, “Any designer’s biggest challenge is to make the bride look great on her special day; a well-designed dress should hide any flaws - this means brides of all shapes and sizes need to be guided on what looks best for her frame. That said, for off-the-shelf designs, designers need to be especially conscious that plus-sized garments are graded differently - plus sized women have a different bust-waist-hip ratio. “

* Be flexible. While you may already have a silhouette in mind or on hand, trust your consultant and try on gowns that you may not have considered when you saw them on the rack or online - they may actually work.

Numerous retailers now offer plus-size bridal gowns including one of the largest bridal gown retailers, David’s Bridals and the bridal Mecca Kleinfelds. But there are also smaller retailers who offer a larger selection for the curvier bride. Alicia Zeller, whose family owns Unique Boutique and Bridal, is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in fashion and retail management at The Art Institute of Indianapolis. She explains “We decided to

* Size is just a number. Bridal gowns are notorious for being made much smaller than daily wear. If the number will affect how you feel about the gown, ask the consultant not to mention the size.

Choose the right fabrics. Keep in mind that thicker fabrics tend to work better on curves as they smooth things out. If you’re fuller busted, avoid heavy beadery in the bodice as it will draw attention to that area. Remember that you can always add cap sleeves to a strapless gown to help streamline the look. No matter a bride’s shape and size, the one piece of advice all experts agree on is confidence. If the bride has confidence and feels beautiful in her gown, she radiates that feeling. My husband & I had a spectacular fairy talethemed wedding in January of 2014 at Timberline Lodge on Oregon’s Mt Hood – and we loved our photos. But one thing we regretted after the fact was not taking more time out of the day for some leisurely photos of just the two of us in the gorgeous natural setting surrounding our venue. (We were too busy

So when our one year anniversary came around, and my talented photographer friend Lauren Zurchin just happened to be passing through the Portland area at the same time, we took the opportunity for a fun anniversary photo shoot in the forests of Mt Hood. We found a parking lot adjacent to the Pacific Crest Trail not too far from Timberline Lodge, I changed back into my wedding dress between cars, and we hiked into the snow for a super fun shoot. It was a wonderful chance to relive the joy of our wedding, and capture some really fun, unique images that we didn’t get on our big day. Lauren even brought along some smoke bombs, sparklers, and remote flash to create some very fun effects – giving us a woodsy, fairy tale feeling (which we loved & reflected the theme from our wedding a year earlier).

Favorite detail of the wedding: We both really loved the cake and cookies from Art of Cake. Gloria went above and beyond. Although it hasn’t been asked, our favourite moment of the day was when we were introduced as Mr. and Mrs. heading into the reception. “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” was blaring and everyone was clapping and cheering. We both felt so much love in that moment, from the people who mean so much to us. We still talk about that a year later.

Best advice for plus size brides: Do your research and ensure the stores you visit for your wedding gown have positive reviews from other plus sized brides and has a good selection. At Durand Bridal, they were very knowledgeable and put me in 5 gowns that were all beautiful and flattering on my 5’ frame. At the first store I went to, I had to browse the aisles and was told more than once that “they didn’t have my size” in the dress I was interested in.
