Welcome to our third OPEN FOR BUSINESS

This is the third conference and exhibition COMBEbusiness has hosted in Ilfracombe and it really is the biggest and best with a packed programme. Today we are delighted to welcome distinguished guests hosting a Disability Confident event for employers ~ page 4. We also have a fantastic series of speakers and discussion panels where you can debate anything from UK and European Government investment to broadband, the global economy, extending the North Devon season and how to develop your business ~ page 6. We’ve also got free advice sessions and workshops on grants, market research, branding and print, social media profiles – you can even get a professional headshot photo for your Twitter or LinkedIn profile for just £19.95 ~ page 10. The Pavilion is bursting with high quality exhibitors from across the area – we’re full to capacity ~ page 12. And there’s free, open networking from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. We are thrilled to welcome participants, exhibitors and visitors from North Devon and beyond to enjoy Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe. We have become the foodie capital of the area – with three times winner of Best Tea Room in Devon Hele Corn Mill exhibiting – while Woolacombe has been voted Best Beach in the UK for the second year. Premier Inn is now investing £5 million in a new-build hotel in Ilfracombe, following the lead of Wetherspoons’ £3.4 million investment. We are also home to major manufacturers and some serious digital and professional businesses. OPEN FOR BUSINESS is about leveraging the success of North Devon businesses and promoting them as far and widely as possible. We hope you enjoy the day and make valuable connections.

EMPLOYMENT

We are delighted to welcome Justin Tomlinson, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Disabled People at the Department of Work and Pensions, to the first Disability Confident event hosted by Peter Heaton-Jones MP. We are also pleased to welcome organisations supporting this campaign: ➤➤ North Devon+ ➤➤ Petroc ➤➤ PLUSS ➤➤ St Loyes Foundation ➤➤ Westward Pathfinder ➤➤ Department of Work and Pensions Employers from across North Devon are welcome to meet the Minister and find out more about how Disability Confident can help their businesses tap into the wealth of skills and eagerness to work of disabled people.

Disability Confident – make it your business

Succeeding in business is your top priority. So finding the best people is essential. Being Disability Confident could help you discover someone your business just can’t do without. As an employer you can become Disability Confident by recruiting and retaining disabled people and people with health conditions for their skills and talent. Through Disability Confident, the Government is working with employers to: ➤➤ challenge attitudes towards disability ➤➤ increase understanding of disability ➤➤ remove barriers to disabled people and those with long-term health conditions in employment ➤➤ ensure that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfill their potential and realise their aspirations Over 6 million people (16%) of working age in the UK are disabled or have a health condition and the government is committed to halving the gap between the employment rates of disabled and non-disabled people. This means around 1 million more disabled people in work.

I am hosting my first Disability Confident event in Ilfracombe in association with COMBEbusiness and inviting local employers from across North Devon to come and hear how they can improve employment outcomes for disabled people, and how their business can really benefit as a result. CONFERENCE

10.30am: Presentation by Chris Garcia followed by panel discussion Our conference starts with the Chief Executive of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW LEP) giving an update on the LEP’s activities and initiatives regarding the regional economy and infrastructure. This will be followed by a panel session including Laurent Boon, BT Programme Director for Connecting Devon and Somerset, and Mike Matthews of North Devon Federation of Small Businesses. 11.30am: Marketing ~ offline and online Marketing is all online now, right? Not necessarily. Even though the internet is an important medium, print is still alive. If it sounds confusing, this session will help to give some perspective on the use of various marketing tools. Panellists will include Stuart Brocklehurst, Chief Executive of Applegate, and Duncan Casburn of Hashtag Marketing Solutions. 1.30pm: Beyond In Season ~ Desire to Aspire North Devon has so much going for it, so why does it struggle to succeed as a tourist destination? Martin Fletcher and his family have run three touring caravan parks and won National Caravan Park of the Year Award. Having sold two of the parks, Martin now devotes more of his time to mentoring and coaching for business and personal development. Martin’s session aims to give food for thought for those looking to develop their full business potential. 2.15pm: Beyond North Devon As the gloves come off for the European referendum campaign, it is a reminder of the impact that global events have on our local economy. Philip Milton has established North Devon’s leading wealth management company, managing over £110 million of client funds. If anyone knows what’s going on in the broader commercial world, it’s Philip Milton. 3.00pm: Streamlining Your Business Adam Saunders is the man from the ‘cloud’. He is the guy some of the largest companies and agencies in the world call on when looking to do anything serious on the internet. He started his first software company when he was just 16 years old and has built and sold more businesses over the years providing services and products in over 150 different countries. Adam will be sharing his experiences of building businesses in this keynote session. 4.00pm: OPEN FOR BUSINESS Awards In January, the OPEN FOR BUSINESS Awards were open for nominations. Following the announcement of the finalists, our closing session will name the winners of the six categories. The climax will be the announcement of the Business of the Year.

SPEAKERS

Read biographies of some of our speakers in the conference programme in the Landmark Theatre ~ visit our web site for more updates

Laurent Boon ~ BT Programme Director for Connecting Devon and Somerset

Connecting Devon and Somerset is the partnership between BT and the local authorities to deliver faster broadband to around 90% of premises in Devon and Somerset (building on the commercial programme of BT and other providers).

Stuart Brocklehurst ~ Chief Executive, Applegate

Stuart was appointed Chief Executive of Applegate in August 2014. He started his career at Barclays, with roles in Corporate Banking, Systems Planning and Strategy. As Head of E-Commerce Strategy he set the course which led Barclays to become the most successful UK bank online. In 2001 he was recruited by Visa International CEMEA as Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Commerce, responsible for e-commerce, mobile commerce, smartcards and other emerging technologies. Roles followed with Carbon Leadership, Amadeus IRT Group as well as that of nonexecutive director on the boards of several companies and Chairman of Octopus Apollo VCT2 plc. He has provided pro bono support to several charities including the Charities Aid Foundation West Africa, the Diocese of Exeter and Pilton House Trust.

Martin Fletcher

Martin Fletcher is a North Devon-based businessman, entrepreneur and a family man. In April 2000 Martin and his family chose to make a significant career move and relocate to Devon, when he and his wife purchased a touring caravan park. Considerable development was put into the park and business growth allowed the purchase of two more parks and a new caravan sales business in Cornwall. In 2009 Martin and his wife won the National Caravan Park of the Year Award. Since 2010, Martin has devoted more of his time to mentoring and coaching other people, usually on a one-to-one basis, both for business and personal development. With two of the parks and the franchised sales dealership now having been sold, there is more time for a new adventure with his new company aptly named ‘Aspirations and Perspective’. Martin always delivers a personalised approach to every individual and business with whom he works, and gains tremendous reward from assisting others who share a similar enthusiasm with a desire to drive change and a passion to see progress.
