Add some sparkle. Bold accessories can transform your look entirely, allowing you to wear that little black dress to more than one party. For a timeless silhouette, pair a sleek strapless dress with oversized earrings that sparkle. A little black dress is the perfect look for a statement necklace. Just don't pair large earrings with an oversized necklace. Pick one or the other and you'll be ready to dazzle. Add a little glamour. Planning to attend a special soiree? Up your beauty routine with a darker evening look. Pair a daring red lipstick with a thin stroke of dark eyeliner. Keep your eyelashes dark and the rest of your look minimal to draw all eyes in the room. Keep locks classic. This year's blockbuster movies caught the attention of celebrities and fashionistas with their glamorous hairstyles. Get the look, without appearing too retro, by using styling gel to work short hair into sculpted finger waves. Those with longer hair should sweep it up into a loose knot and add a thin headband. Give your nails some shine. Beautiful bracelets and rings will draw attention to your hands. Keep them looking beautiful with a fresh manicure and the right shade of polish. A perfect manicure will also set off the one holiday accessory everyone must have - a cute clutch. Bring beauty tools along. When you pack your clutch for a night of celebrating, make sure to include the necessities. Stay shine-free and party picture ready with pressed powder. Also include a small toothbrush and a travel sized toothpaste. Slip in a concealer, color for your lips and a small comb for quick touch-ups and you're ready to go out and celebrate the season.

for any event this holiday season!

America’s first state domestic violence coalition, extending a lifeline to more than 3 million victims and their children

Setting out for a family road trip? While your destination promises memorable fun, simply “getting there” can be stressful. In fact, 97 percent of parents dread spending more than an hour in the car with their kids, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by BabyCenter.com on behalf of VTech, a maker of electronic learning products for children. “Most problems parents face while traveling with their kids stem from boredom,” says psychologist Dr. Helen Boehm. “Kids are engaged during their school day where their minds are constantly active and soaking up knowledge. But the learning doesn’t have to stop in the car.” To keep the boredom at bay and make family travel more enjoyable, try these fun tips on your next family road trip: • Teach by observation: Look for landmarks along the way and discuss their history and importance. If the trip allows, stop at sites such as museums and aquariums. Look for license plates and talk about what each person knows about the state. Make a list of all the license plates spotted. • Incorporate learning toys: Learning toys are a great way to help children stay mentally sharp during vacations, while also allowing them to explore and have fun. Look for educational, developmental toys which offer interactive game play and learning fun on such subjects as reading, math, social studies and science. • Take time for rest stops: A quick break can alleviate the choruses of, “Are we there yet?” and also allow for teachable moments. If there are parks or nature walks along the way, kids can look for animals, collect interesting plants, leaves and stones and try to identify them. • Pack a boredom bag: Parents can keep kids engaged with a fully stocked “boredom bag,” complete with books on their favorite subjects. A small notebook and pencil is great for drawing and lets kids explore their creative side. Pack small craft items like pipe cleaners and construction paper. Or use flashcards to introduce them to a variety of new topics, such as letters, numbers, colors and animals. With some simple planning and prep, parents don’t have to dread road trips and can enjoy not just the destination, but the journey as well.

Classic Comfort Food

Blue Cheese Potatoes Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 6

16 ounces small potatoes, halved 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 8 ounces bacon, cooked and crumbled 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup crumbled blue cheese Preheat oven to 400°F. In baking dish, toss potatoes with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until potatoes are tender. While potatoes are baking, mix bacon and cheeses in small dish and set aside. When potatoes are cooked, remove from oven and sprinkle with bacon and cheese mixture. Return to oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until cheese is melted. 12

What if your craving for comfort food comes on a busy weeknight? Cut time, not corners. You need something with little preparation and delicious flavor. Here's all it takes to make your next meal in no time: • Make potatoes the star of your next quick, gourmet meal. How about no peeling, no washing, and delicious flavor? Look for potato varieties bred to grow smaller. These baby potatoes are the perfect size for quick cooking. Their thin skin does not required peeling, and they are pre-washed for your convenience. • Use prepared and fresh ingredients for your homemade meals. For example, you can create a stir-fry with frozen, grilled chicken breast and precut vegetables from the salad bar. Instead of rice, serve with potatoes mashed, buttered or topped with your favorite ingredients for a perfectly wellrounded meal. • When you cook, double your favorite recipes and freeze half for quick meals later in the week. While you're warming up the weeknight dinner, make a comforting side dish with quickcooking potatoes. You'll have dinner on the table in under 30 minutes. With a little planning and quick-cooking ingredients, you're just minutes away from your favorite steaming, hot dish. So, put on those pajamas, find your favorite blanket and prepare to dig in to savory dishes like Blue Cheese Potatoes. After all, any good comfort dish should have at least a bit of cheese, butter or bacon.

• quick appointments • warm rooms and real robes • 3-D images with Tomosynthesis, the best technology available

Wake up and work out: Do you start your morning with a healthy dose of exercise? The time you begin your workout matters more than you may think. A study shows that those who work out before eating in the morning burned approximately 20 percent more than those who wait until after breakfast. Rev up your metabolism: Allow a little extra time in your morning to rev up your metabolism. A short, 20 minute weight lifting session can get your blood pumping and help you burn calories throughout the day. Make time for breakfast: Never skip breakfast - not only will that deplete your energy, but it can also negatively impact your health. In fact, recent studies show that those who opt out of breakfast time are at a 27 percent higher risk of having a heart attack. The same study also finds that those who eat breakfast are likely to be healthier eaters overall. This is especially important for children as they develop habits over time. Create a checklist: Think of your entire day as a series of small goals and write them down in the morning or the night before. Then cross out tasks as you complete them. Not only will you reduce stress from having a better visual of your family's day, you will feel more productive as you progress through your list. Shake up the morning: Get out that blender and toss in healthy foods. Breakfast smoothies and shakes are a fast way to get the essential nutrients to jumpstart your day. Plus, they're easy to pour, and they're mobile - throw in a straw and sip while you walk. Recruit your children to help, and let them have fun mixing up their own tasty creation with fresh fruit like pineapple, banana and blueberries. Amp up your shake with nutritious additions, such as chia seeds, natural peanut butter or granola. Pause: Before you leave the house, take one minute to breathe. Feel good you ate breakfast and warmed up your body with exercise. And don't forget to take your to-do list with you. You never know what opportunities the day will inspire.

Math understanding is key to success for girls An epidemic is sweeping the nation. Girls are at a disadvantage when it comes to success in math and science, and the future does not look bright if parents don’t act now. In the next 10 years, 80 percent of all jobs will require technical skills, according to Labor Department statistics. And jobs in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields are expected to grow twice as fast as all jobs. But currently, the ratio of boys to girls enrolled in STEM courses is a staggering 6 to 1, putting girls at a severe disadvantage to excel in these fields in the future.

Hope-Buddy

STEM jobs require strong mathematical aptitude. So when it comes to your daughter’s math classes, these statistics should motivate you not to let her off the hook. From design to computer science, studying math now means enjoying a world of professional options later. How do you steer your daughters toward classes that can help them develop the skills and interests necessary to pursue these careers? • Find math role models: Leverage your own professional network to educate your daughters about these fields. Do you have a friend who works in math, science or engineering? Ask her to talk to your kids about her job, what she studied in school, and how math applies to her everyday work and life. This discussion can be a great inspiration. • Take a field trip: Show girls that math can be fun through weekend field trips. Visit a science museum or take a tour of an architecturally impressive building to learn how it was designed.

Take your daughter’s interests into account to plan outings that will spark a deeper interest in real world mathematical applications. • Be musical: When you’re listening to your favorite tunes, don’t forget that music and mathematics go hand-in-hand. Understanding the fundamental principles of music may help your daughter strengthen her visuospatial reasoning and succeed in her math courses. In a study published by “Nature,” the science journal, students improved their mathematics test scores significantly after several months of musical training. Encourage her to join the school band or take piano lessons. In today’s economy, having a solid mathematical foundation is becoming increasingly important. So don’t let historical gender imbalances in these fields hold your daughters back. With a little encouragement, getting girls hooked on math can be easy as pi.

To a foster child searching for answers, a Mentor makes all the difference.

Recycling is crucial to running a green home. It’s also an easy and effective way to reduce your weekly contribution to the local landfill. Here are some helpful insights into common recycling questions: • What cardboard is recyclable? All cardboard boxes except waxed can be recycled. In some communities, cardboard includes cereal, pasta or other food boxes. If possible, remove adhesive labels and tape prior to placing it in the recycling bin, as glue can interfere with the pulping process. Recycle the non-greasy portion of pizza boxes and discard the rest with the trash. • Is wet newspaper recyclable? Paper fibers can only hold so much moisture. If wet paper arrives at the recycling facility, it may not absorb the chemicals needed to process the paper fibers into new products. Try to keep recycle-ready paper indoors until pick-up day. • Should you remove plastic bottle caps and wine corks? Corks should be reused or thrown in the trash. Remove plastic caps so you can crush the plastic bottles, making it easy to fit more into the bin. Some caps are recyclable, but recycling centers often discard non-recyclable caps as trash. • Can you recycle items that contained chemicals? Yes, as long as they’re completely empty. An exception is motor oil, because residual oil can interfere with plastics recycling. • How do you recycle batteries and electronics? Many municipalities are now recycling electronics. And some department stores, such as Best Buy, have takeback programs. Visit www.Call2Recycle.org to find your nearest battery take-back location. • Where do recyclables go? After curbside pick-up, recyclables go to an interim processor called a materials recovery facility. There, they are sorted by machine and by hand using a conveyor belt. Separated recyclables are sent to a processing plant to be made into new products. • What happens to waste that’s not recycled? While some materials may be sent to landfills, the preferred option is an Energy-from-Waste facility, which offers a safe, technologically advanced means of waste disposal that generates clean, renewable energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and recycles metal left over in household waste. Environmental stewardship starts at home. We must all take steps to educate ourselves on recycling.
