WELCOME TO THE NATION’S

BEST TOURNAMENT RESOURCE

Last year, Sports Planning Guide (SPG) released the debut Where2Play (W2P) guide with a focus on multipurpose facilities for soccer and lacrosse.

This edition, focusing on baseball and softball, once again showcases the journalism expertise of our team, profiling nearly 200 facilities that range in size for any tournament or event at destinations across North America.

SPG has been chronicling destinations and facilities in the annual edition of Sports Planning Guide in print as well as digital on SportsPlanningGuide.com for over 15 years. This resource has grown tremendously, with our 2024 guide clocking in at nearly 400 pages for the second straight year. That’s a lot of information and we’re proud to have become the nation’s leading resource for sports tournament planners.

W2P is the natural evolution of SPG’s services. By focusing on specific field and facility types,

we’re able to assist in further narrowing the selection process when comparing for one that would best fit your needs. These are tough decisions facing rights holders and governing bodies, and our aim is to make it easier.

We hope that you enjoy this second edition of W2P. We understand that often the demand for places to play outweighs the supply of facilities. While destinations across the United States, even the world, continue working to meet the demand by improving existing venues and building new ones, we stand ready to provide in-depth reporting to ensure our readers are covered and feeling more confident when making the right choice for tournaments and events.

Be safe and play well,

The State of Softball in the United States

SLOW-PITCH AND FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL ARE PUSHING FOR GROWTH IN THE U.S.

Softball has witnessed a decline in overall participation since 2018, but is that actually a determining factor of the sport’s popularity? While the short answer is a resounding “no,” there are a few issues that need to be addressed for the long-term health of the sport at multiple levels and age groups.

Fluctuating Participation Is Not an Indicator of Decline

While 2020 negatively impacted many sports, softball participation as a whole—slow-pitch and fast-pitch—had notably been on a slight decline already two years prior. However, Statista reported that since 2010, where the highest participation numbers were just shy of 11 million combined in the United States, numbers have actually fluctuated over the next ten years with the 2021 numbers showing fast-pitch in particular returning to the 2 million mark and steadily increasing. Slow-pitch softball on the other hand started to see a boost after 2021.

“The resilience of the slow-pitch softball community has been remarkable,” said Manuel T. Ferrero III, commissioner and founder of International Slow Pitch Softball. “Since 2021, we’ve seen a vibrant return to play, with participation levels rebounding and, in some areas, even exceeding pre-pandemic numbers. This resurgence is a testament to the passion that players, coaches and enthusiasts have [for the game].”

The return to regular play is an obvious part to play in any increase, but there has to be more to get young players back into both the slow-pitch and fast-pitch games. This is where convention and visitor bureaus (CVBs) are coming into play with more initiatives and events to pull in.

“[Quad Cities is] working with the state of Iowa on a sports marketing grant to help bolster a softball event in June of 2024, as this is one of the sports that we’d like to see grow

Where2Play Baseball and Softball 9

further in the area,” said Joan Kranovich, vice president and business growth and director at Sports Quad Cities. “Our tournament rights holders and directors are telling us that numbers are strong for travel teams, especially those from Chicago, wanting to play softball in the Quad Cities.”

Putting together big events or drawing in existing ones via a bidding process or other means can help draw big numbers for both participants and guests. The bigger the event, or the more you can host, the more that sport will draw—as will the destination(s). This is why CVBs are critically important to more than bringing in visitors to boost tourist numbers as their moves can also help grow an entire sport at a local, regional or even national level. Draw in the right planner and everything can take off.

What Are Some of the Issues Softball Is Facing?

As travel teams become more of the norm for girls’ softball, high school softball in particular continues to decline despite the sport being a staple in the

country for a long time. Determining factors are simple though, with a lack of funds in education to provide for high school softball programs, traveling teams become the more attractive option, but the out-of-pocket costs to parents increases by taking this route. If a family can’t afford for their child to play on a traveling team and the high school softball program is not receiving the funds it needs to thrive and provide adequate facilities and equipment for young women, then what other options do you have?

Schools will always put more funds towards programs that receive the highest amount of interest. If softball is not receiving enough funding, the answer here is to find ways to help provide more to local high schools in need. This often comes down to government decisions though, so it’s important to push officials to make the effort to provide better athletics for children.

For destinations that lack the weather to host more tournaments—be it a cold season or rainouts—facility numbers may not be able to keep up with the demand as playing days fluctuate.

For destinations in the Midwest and Northeast, this is a common concern.

Softball is also witnessing a lack of umpire numbers. However, fault for this concern doesn’t fall onto the sport or a lack of funding, but rather the parents of participating athletes. Speaking with David Rocha, owner and general manager of Fastpitch Nation Park, the game is growing and doing well, but softball is losing more umpires each year than the sport is gaining.

“[Softball has] a serious trend that will hinder growth and may force the game to get smaller over the coming years— that being a serious lack of qualified umpires,” said Rocha. “The primary reason umpires are leaving is out-ofcontrol parents that can make umpiring so unpleasant that they simply choose not to do it anymore. Those umpires that do stay are part of a smaller pool and hence supply and demand forces the price paid for umpiring services to rise quickly.”

The call to action here is for people to let the children play and enjoy their limited time in the spotlight with their teams—win or lose. These athletic experiences, minus the aggro shouting at officials, can help them grow into adulthood with communication and teamwork skills, healthier bodies and minds and a stronger ability to adapt to change, among other important qualities.

Softball’s Push for Changes and Improvements Highlight a Healthy Future

Slow-pitch and fast-pitch softball are still among the most popular sports in the United States. However, if we wish for the game to grow, there’s certainly plenty to change and improve upon. The fact that we’re aware is critical. We’re already seeing efforts being made by CVBs, local communities, tournament planners and more.

For the love of the game, it’s important to make the effort to signify to schools, officials and others that softball is critically important and that its future relies on the concerted efforts of a whole, not just a few—be it to speak up for the game or calm down for the players. W2P

Baseball is Still the Classic Youth Sport of America

AMERICA’S PASTIME EYES GROWTH WITH MORE DIVERSITY AND THE HARD WORK OF COMMUNITIES

The sport of baseball and its variations date back to the 18th century, going from a makeshift backyard school game to maintaining some of the most profitable leagues in the world today. What about the amateur game? Kids from the age of 6 to adults in their 40s are most commonly participating in baseball on a daily basis—seasonal restrictions excluded.

When it specifically comes to youth, baseball is always right near the top of the list of most-popular sports. Whether it be T-ball, machine pitch, little league or high school baseball, kids love to be involved at an early age. Not only does baseball allow kids to be active, but it provides an opportunity for them to learn what it is like to work together as a team and work towards a goal. However, how has America’s Pastime fared over the past decade?

Baseball Is Still a Go-to Sport

According to a report from Statista, the number of youth participating in baseball hit a record low, predictably due to Covid, with 12.2 percent in the group aged 6-12 involved regularly. In 2021, the number grew to 12.6 percent and is only expected to grow more as the country moves forward postpandemic. Though that slight increase wasn’t as big a leap forward as initially expected, many convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) and sports commissions have remained positive, with some reporting great comebacks.

“The 2021 season at the Meijer Sports Complex [was] a complete success, proving that sports tourism is leading the comeback of our regional tourism economy,” said Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC). “The return of more baseball and

“The return of more baseball and softball tournaments, especially those that attract travel teams, is a bellwether of more positive change to come in the sports tourism industry.”

softball tournaments, especially those that attract travel teams, is a bellwether of more positive change to come in the sports tourism industry.”

The return of baseball after a brief decline in play has clearly been immense for the sports tourism industry as a whole, and has only increased in the years since.

This wasn’t the first time there was a dip in youth baseball participation though. A whopping 16.5 percent of all youth participated in baseball in 2008 before a steep decline to 12.2 percent just four years later in 2012, but this can be chalked up to the economic collapse of ‘08. When life gets in the way, the numbers prove that baseball will make a comeback one way or another, from communities to travel teams and more.

Tournament Play Is Key to Baseball’s Success

With baseball rising from its lowest number of participants in recent years, including a 20-percent increase over the past three years in African-American communities alone—signifying a healthy ascent for diversity and inclusionism— tournament play is still what creates and sustains success for baseball planners nationwide. With players and families arriving to destinations from neighboring towns and across state

lines, the sports tourism industry booms when baseball tournaments are hosted.

“[Lubbock, Texas, has] been good the last three or four years with baseball,” said Eric Launer, sports sales manager at Visit Lubbock. “Tournaments keep getting bigger and better and it keeps expanding. The majority of the youth tournaments we run sell out. From our point-of-view, we’re looking for tournaments to bring people in from outside of town.”

Not only do baseball tournaments enhance the sports tourism industry, but tournaments improve young players across the board. Tournaments result in more games played, allowing players to consistently receive more reps, more innings played and new competition to face. Additionally, the family aspect is a factor that can’t be matched across other sports. Summertournament hours away from home provide kids with bonding moments and lifelong lessons from their family, coaches, peers and competition.

The sports tourism industry dominates with baseball tournaments year-round, but when it comes to the youth, the memories of the extended weekend baseball tournaments will be what is remembered for years down the road.

Baseball’s Tireless Efforts Will Lead to Bigger and Better Outcomes

As the baseball industry grows, the outcomes will only lead to bigger and better opportunities in the future. As Minnesota’s local Fox 21 News reported, the cost of youth sports on a monthly basis is in the $700- to $1,000-dollar range. With families willing to continue to pour their money into youth sports, it only leads to a bigger budget for the sports tourism industry.

“I think [baseball] is going to continue to get bigger,” said Launer. “[Baseball] is a sport that’s always been popular and I think it’s going to continue to get more popular.”

While navigating the post-pandemic landscape of the baseball industry may be trying at times, the pivotal efforts from CVBs, sports commissions and facility operators around the country provide the best atmosphere and most luxurious playing levels. Getting volunteers, umpires and a passionate community behind the growth of baseball is what will lead to the sustained success of the sport. Baseball remains one of the hottest sports in the country, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room to grow in the upcoming years. W 2 P
