WORDS FROM THE

EDITOR SUMMER HAS ARRIVED IN ONTARIO. After the long winter days, I could not be more grateful to feel the warmth of the summer sun. During the summer months, the streets of Oakville are transformed into beautiful liveable landscapes. There are more places to relax with extended sidewalks and stunning tree-lined boulevards. Be sure to come out this season, despite the construction, to support the amazing specialty shops and high-quality restaurants. Parking is free on weekends which is the perfect time to experience all that my favourite Canadian town has to offer. Oakville is the perfect place to work, live and play.

5 TIPS FOR

Summer Planning MOST IMPORTANT, DON’T WAIT! Want to do something fabulous for our planet? Plant a tree. Start with a good covering of mulch for your garden. It cools your roots, suppresses weeds, stores moisture and breaks down, adding humus to the soil. Keep the most comfortable part of your garden close to your back door. That’s your best escape route to sanity. Containers provide wonderful pops of colour wherever your garden needs a lift. (Like using cushions on your couch without having to change the upholstery). Never underestimate the value of a professional. The care and maintenance is worth the investment. ― Your Property Care Specialists

howy pieces are frowned upon – instead, the shooting star in living rooms and dining rooms is soft glamour, elegant, casual and unobtrusive. Features such as brass-coloured pedestals don’t just signal prestige, they also bring a warm glow into the home. Soft Glam focuses on high-quality statement furniture that can survive more than a single season. Braam’s Custom Cabinets have made their mark by incorporating old world craftsmanship techniques with new world innovations for 40 years. The business has grown from a home-based business to operating out of several locations. Their clients have access to three exquisite showrooms located in Oakville, London and Birmingham, Michigan. All of the custom cabinets are manufactured in their 47,000-square-foot facility in St. Thomas, Ontario. Clients are the heartbeat of this business and are always treated with the utmost respect. The entire design process ensures the client receives expert advice from our qualified designers, top quality craftsmanship and manufacturing, and exceptional service. Upon entry into the showroom, one of the senior designers will begin the customization process. The first step is to review ideas and options to ensure the final product meets the client’s expectations and lifestyle needs. Combining design and functionality is where Braam’s Custom Cabinets thrive. After the consultation, drawings are created and presented. Finally, revisions or changes are implemented before construction begins keeping the project in line with the client’s vision and budget. Our experienced designers work with builders and architects to keep the project on schedule.

Kemi, a professional designer for over 25 years, has a passion for old-fashioned craftsmanship and modern interior design. Kemi joined the Braam’s team to be able to work on exceptional interiors. She has worked on all aspects of design and has developed an understanding of the complete package of interiors. This knowledge allows her the ability to implement design flow across several rooms. She works closely with the client to go above and beyond expectations and delivering an exquisite finished product. For this project, Braam’s Custom Cabinets partnered with John Mandalfino of Hallmark Homes and design firm Studio H. Kemi worked in conjunction with Studio H to develop the concepts. The kitchen was a focal point for Kemi where she incorporated a contemporary feel and a slick design. When designing this dream kitchen, she employed walnut framing around the cabinetry, in a noir finish, creating a sophisticated look. The cabinets have slab doors with tab pulls for ease of opening and closing. The sink is a special feature that can be customized to individual needs. There are two sinks for efficiency when cooking or entertaining which is a compliment to the homeowner’s lifestyle. The pantry incorporates a pull-out feature for easy access to all pantry items. The countertops complete the design with clean and sleek porcelain.

The master ensuite is sleek and stylish with floating cabinets. Porcelain walls display a modern black and white pattern to attract the eye. The matching floor tiles are also porcelain. The light fixture was carefully selected to provide complimentary soft lighting for maximum comfort. The entire design team at Braam’s Custom Cabinets offer their clients custom cabinets with gorgeous aesthetic and functionality. Braam’s Custom Cabinets is proud to support Canadian workers and their communities. The owner, Peter Braam, remarks, “I am proud of the excellent work that Braam’s has completed for the past 40 years. I take the commitment of supporting our 80 staff seriously. As a family-owned business, we support local communities at every opportunity.” The projects that Braam’s Custom Cabinets participate in are successful due to their team approach and commitment to excellence. Together, with their clients and business partners, Braam’s Custom Cabinets are extremely proud of their accomplishments.

A dream built from the

wilderness LISCHKOFF REIMAGINES THE IMPOSSIBLE IN MUSKOKA BY BRIAN BAKER

34 | SUMMER 2019

THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM

It’s a picturesque setting: a tranquil lake view, rippled by the excitement of inner tubers riding the wakes of speedboats.

The water laps the shores, and perhaps, just maybe, there is a loon releasing its mournful call into the world.

And for those looking to design their dream homes in such a serene setting can look to Lischkoff Build.

There are brief moments where the ring lists into the water and an unbalanced body is flung like a ragdoll into the Muskoka lake.

It’s a surreal image that helps shed the tension of the city -- or even the bedroom communities around Toronto.

They’ll take any idea and run with it, often importing design items to the job site like exterior siding from British Columbia, or that special couch only found within the hidden confines of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

As they surface, the ripples have reached the shore and the placidness of the lake returns.

THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM

These can be childhood memories, or just memories being created as families head north.

And they take into consideration the current trends of energy efficiency and environmental impact, given the nature of Muskoka’s lakes. Given the lot size, they’ll run with a full post-and-beam design, replete with a modern flat roof, and keep the boreal forest intact around the lakefront property.

SUMMER 2019 | 35

Size, style and budget are key factors in working with the design. Every step of the process, from design to build, is customized, says partner Sam Hisey. “There aren’t a lot of true custom home builders out there, but we are definitely customer focused,” he says. “We’ll let you choose anything.” From genesis, the design concept will focus on the overall style, function and feel of the project. Full architectural details are preserved in the drawings, floorplans and three-dimensional renderings. Much like the loon knows all the good fishing spots on the lake, Lischkoff knows about the red-tape of local building regulations and they’ll budget accordingly. The construction team, helmed by Jim Lischkoff, is rife with committed tradespeople who will adapt to the environment given. That also means future projects in Toronto’s High Park neighbourhood and Oakville. “We do a lot of development on waterfronts and our designs are designed to make minimal impact on the water,” he says. There is a team lead that deals with the ground-up build, and then another who will handle all the furniture, drapery, lighting and décor elements. So, once the project is done, and the chance to listen to the quivering call of the loon, at dusk, has presented itself, clients can enjoy the natural beauty around them, all while basking in the glow of a design made by them. 36 | SUMMER 2019

Modern Luxury Landscaping:

Where Beauty Meets Function BY TARA MacINTOSH

Luxury landscaping weaves a kaleidoscope of colour and texture, resulting in personality, style and functionality in your outdoor space. This combination equates to relaxation and sustainability of your backyard oasis.

Creating a sustainable, landscaped backyard often includes a garden that produces an edible product. Spending time in the garden is time well spent for the whole family. Depending on the size of the backyard, choose between growing a variety of herbs or, for bigger spaces, fruits and vegetables. The excitement of eating food nurtured and grown by your family never gets old. In fact, it may become one of the most enjoyable summer activities your family engages in. Children will want to get in on this action as well. Give them their own section of the garden to grow their favourite vegetables. Irrigation systems have become an absolute necessity in luxury landscaping. Using natural resources, a modern system will reuse rain water and is designed for maximum absorption. Reducing the amount of water required to keep the plants fresh and healthy is great for the environment. Prolonging the life and health of your plant material is truly a worthwhile investment.

Planting native plants makes great sense. They not only compliment your space, they also help sustain life for insects and small animals. Native plants allow for innovative design as they use out-of-the-box materials such as grasses, shrubs and some flowers native to the land. Using native plants is a huge compliment to Mother Nature as the birds, bees and smaller animals, local to the area, benefit from the ability to pollinate and feed in their natural environment. Herbs will grow in any space that is big enough to hold a box. Choose herbs used most often for garnish and flavour, then move on to more daring seeds. Canadians notoriously slow to self-congratulation. We lack the loud red, white, and blue of our cousins to the south – perhaps in direct and necessary contrast. As a result, we tend to take our standing and accomplishments for granted. Fittingly, at the centre of our humbleness – literally, figuratively, spiritually, economically, and culturally – is a cosmopolis that produces excellence born of diversity that rivals any region in the world, whether on ice, rinks, tracks, and rivers the world over. The GTA is a unique experiment – a blending of the urban and rural within a multiplicity of cultures. Its rich composition breeds a competitive spirit informed by its resources and spirit. And vicariously, we all get to indulge in the dreams of a few, to the pride and delight of many. When athletes like Greg Westlake, Phylicia George, Renata Fast, and Adam van Koeverden wear the maple leaf and grace podiums at home and abroad, they do so as a result of our cultural and personal investment in the riches of a region. They are what happens when the great experiment is a success, and their successes are our pride. The GTA does not just breed athletic excellence; it informs its accomplishment, its character, and its abundance. What follows is not a celebration of four competitors, but rather the celebration of four very different stories that could only begin in and around Toronto. SUMMER 2019 | 45

GEORGE

By indulging in those opportunities, George found herself craving competition, which took her to the University of Connecticut. “It was all about competition. In Canada, they [universities] don’t offer full athletic scholarships. And I have lots of brothers and sisters, so I knew getting the scholarship would be helpful to my family […] and helped me to be a better athlete and made me more of the athlete that I am today.”

A True Ontarian Double Threat

Canada is an exercise in the endurance of extremes, of polarity. Summer and Winter, French and English, east and west, Atlantic and Pacific, urban and rural, Leafs and Habs. In the GTA in particular that duality is ever-present, notably in our mercurial seasons. Our summers rival the humidity of tropical climes, while our winters offer the brutality of long sub-zero stretches. That duplicity informs our character, a pride worn on our toques, evident in our mythology. And though it runs in our veins, rarely does it present itself with the wonder and accomplishment of Phylicia George – a two-sport, two-Olympic, two-season athlete who both embodies and embraces the very best of the GTA’s binary nature. George is a rare breed, a two-sport star who has represented Canada across the globe, notably in the Summer Olympics in hurdling and the Winter Olympics in the two-woman bobsleigh – taking home the Bronze (with Kallie Humphries) in the latter event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. One is left to wonder why a region like the GTA, so blessed by bifurcation, does not produce more two-season competitors – then quickly we are humbled by the realization of the extreme sacrifice that’s required to compete in just one sport, let alone at a world-class level.

But while at UConn, in Storrs, Connecticut, George missed the variegation that inspired her to compete in the first place. “The biggest thing I missed was the diversity. I have a Caribbean background. [At home] I’m able to get that food if I want to and [engage in] different cultures.” George has represented Canada all over the globe, in both World Championships and Olympics, both proud of home and in awe of the experiences her competitive spirit and country afford her. “Everywhere else is so cool. You go to the places, and it’s awesome, but then you also realize, ‘Wow. We have an amazing country, and we have so much available to us.’ We’re the greatest country in the world, I genuinely believe that. The more I travel, the more I appreciate it. When people find out that I’m Canadian, they’re welcoming. I’m definitely very aware of the fact that I’m Canadian when I am outside of Canada.” But this two-sport star has a singular focus: “Tunnel vision,” George says. “Laser focus towards Tokyo,” the 2020 Summer Olympics.

So if our natural dichotomies inspired George, how did they help her realize her accomplishments? Multiplicity was pervasive in George’s evolution as an athlete. “The education system [in Ontario] was really great,” says George. “I went to a Catholic school, where there was access to a bunch of things to play. So I played basketball, volleyball, [and many other sports] when I was in high school – [there were so many] opportunities for extracurricular activities.” Photo: COC/Mark Blinch

Home is Where Family Is The narrative in sport is often simply an exercise in vicariousness – nose pressed to the glass at Scotiabank Arena praying the Leafs return to glory; in a sea of fans in Jurassic Park willing the Raptors to new heights; watching Vladimir Guerrero Jr. elicit memories of his dad, memories of ‘92 and ‘93. Most of us are content to sit on the sidelines. But without those who aspire to greatness, we’d have no sideline upon which to sit.

Westlake truly believes in the notion of “home”, of community. “Home is where family is,” he contends. “All of my siblings and parents live in Oakville. I bought a house here last summer and love being back in Oakville. I have used all the resources in this area to become the athlete and person I am today. I have been so active in this community for a long time now. So many people from the GTA have helped me over the years. Teachers, coaches, doctors, community leaders all help give me that sense of community and ‘home’.” As athletes such as Westlake travel the world competing, and people learn they’re from Ontario, reactions are as we might expect. “As Canadians we get a lot of love from people all over the world. People just assume we are friendly and have good intentions. Playing for Team Canada and having the opportunity to wear the maple leaf on lots of my clothes, travel bags and equipment has definitely been an ice breaker over the years while travelling.” Westlake has used the resources afforded him to become a world-class athlete and understands the importance of building the next generation of competitors from the GTA that has been so good to him. Giving back to the community, whether through War Amps, the Matt Cook Foundation, or other charitable causes, inform that sense of community. “The GTA is a great place to be involved in community initiatives. There are so many great grassroots programs for kids. I’ve lived in Toronto, Mississauga, and now Oakville and there are so many different great organizations doing amazing work to help

people in their community. I enjoy how simple it is to get involved.” Ambassadorship is asked of many athletes, but few embrace its responsibility and privilege as fully as Westlake does. “It is easy for me to be a spokesperson for Paralympic sport on an international level. I view myself as a very lucky person to be able to play the game I’ve loved since I was born. I get to use my status as a hockey player to do charity work, travel the world, and have some great experiences.” But whether in Torino, Pyeongchang, Sochi, Marlborough, Goyang, Ostrava, or Hamar realizing his dreams, the simplicity of home always calls. “I am most excited these days to get home and go for a walk along the lakeshore with my girlfriend Catherine and my dog Bailey. Then pick one of our favourite restaurants downtown Oakville and go for a nice meal.”

Greg Westlake gives us a reason to grace the sidelines, bleachers, and benches. Westlake is blessed with an unparalleled competitive spirit and the support of a family, community, and region. Westlake has reached heights many of us could not possibly conceive of in our wildest fantasies. He’s a three-time Paralympic Games’ medalist and five-time World Championship medalist in Para ice hockey. Westlake has achieved at levels that defy inspiration, and veer into the fantastical.

A Name Born for Our National Sport

There’s nothing as quintessentially Canadian as hockey. Sure, it’s a trope, a stereotype – a humble winter nation outfitted in plaid and skates. But the truth is, our affection for the sport is inescapable. Our love for it is our birthright, and nearly every kid from Oakville, Hamilton, or Burlington dreams of donning the maple leaf on the world’s biggest rinks. But dreams are just that – fantasy. And most of us settle for the sidelines and live vicariously through those who wear the red and white for us. “When you’re a kid, and you’re watching the Olympic opening ceremonies – it’s so grand,” says Renata Fast, an Olympian, collegiate champ, and Canadian Women’s Hockey League star. “It’s so amazing. And growing up I remember sitting on my parents’ bed with my older brother when they announced Canada was coming into the stadium.” Just a few years later, Fast herself was walking into the stadium, some other hopeful child in a bedroom in Hamilton aspiring to the dream Fast had realized. Fast, (has there ever been a better surname for hockey?), epitomizes the fantasy born on rinks in Oakville, Milton, and the GTA – Ontarians who grew up on the sport, committed to participating in its lore. Born in Hamilton in the same hospital as her whole family, the youngest of four siblings, Fast lived the atypical Canadian childhood. Her parents gave her every opportunity to try every sport she wanted to, but while her friends and family engaged with sport recreationally, Fast found a more competitive spirit.

And that’s what she did. Fast starred at Clarkson University, and in her second year helped the Golden Knights win the school’s first NCAA Championship. From there she went on to compete for the Hockey Canada’s National Women’s Development Team and the Women’s National Team. In 2018, in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Fast realized every Canadian’s dream of representing their country in the Winter Olympics, winning the Silver medal in a hard-fought shootout with archrival Team USA. Sport affords the unique privilege of being able to see the world while representing a nation. But to Fast, Ontario is home. And bringing the sport home, to provide the resources that built her career to a new generation, is a responsibility she takes very seriously. “When I was a young girl,” she explains, “Becky Keller and Cheryl Pounder [Canadian Olympians] would put on a camp. My mom enrolled me and my sister and one of my good friends. I remember going out on the ice with them just learning from that. I need to do something to give back because there was so much support when I was at the Olympics and specifically, from [the hockey community.] That’s how I started my camp.” The Renata Fast Hockey Camp celebrates its second summer this year in Burlington, with Fast in the Keller and Pounder role, returning home to foster dreams.

“I just fell in love with it,” she says of hockey. “[And] I just played because I loved it. I like having fun… I’m competitive. I didn’t really think that much of it [beyond fun] until High School and then things got a little more serious when I realized that I could get a scholarship, and then once I got a

After the Podium(s) Adam van Koeverden’s bio reads like a record book: Four Olympic medals over four Games, eight World Championship medals, and three World Records in kayaking, including two that fell to… Adam van Koeverden. He won the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s premiere athlete in 2004. He was Canada’s flagbearer at the 2008 games’ opening ceremonies (and the closing ceremony in Athens). He’s competed on nearly every body of water the planet has offered to competitive kayaking. But what happens when it becomes time to let the next generation strive for their dreams?

“The transition from competitive sport has been challenging, but I’ve enjoyed that challenge of staying in one place. Before I retired I was travelling eight months out of the year. But having a favorite coffee shop, a trail route, and a running club that I belong to and a group of friends that I see regularly at local events – that’s not been part of the challenge. That’s been part of the plus of staying home and being part of a great community like Milton.” Milton, Ontario is an oasis of nature that has timelessly withstood the GTA’s inevitable urban expansion. Despite being at the epicentre of Canada’s most populous region, Milton offers a bucolic comfort that makes it unique. Embraced by the Niagara Escarpment and Bruce Trail, Milton has eased van Koeverden’s transition by offering resources active bodies crave and amenities that foster a social foundation. “We’re a product of choices that we make,” he says. “The biggest choice we make as an adult is where you’re going to live. When I was considering where I wanted to live, I knew that I couldn’t live without access to great parks and conservation areas, and facing the reality of being a retiring athlete, I needed to be able to afford a house. That’s why I chose Milton, because there’s growth potential, it’s affordable and has the proximity to awesome trails for mountain biking and my dog. That’s the dream for me.” Dreams evolve, but they are forever informed by home. “The first time I ever tried kayaking was in Rockwood, just north of Milton, at a summer camp. I was sitting in a boat thinking, ‘This is pretty cool. I like

this kind of exercise, just paddling around the lake.’”Having realized the ultimate dreams of sport, van Koeverden has found a new focus for his reverie: politics. He will run for the Liberal Party of Canada in the fall 2019 federal election, in the Milton riding. “I really enjoyed representing my country. I’ve always enjoyed and gotten a lot out of standing up for things that I believe in. I had the luxury of doing quite a lot of great community and charity work. Purposefully engaged in something and with people who are similarly motivated is the most rewarding thing. When I started thinking about what I wanted to do next, I kept coming across a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King: ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others.’” So how does world-class kayaking prepare one for the world of politics? “Kayaking was cold and repetitive, and knocking on doors for the last six months have been cold and lonely and repetitive,” laughs van Koeverden. “But instead of 10,000 strokes a day, I knock on 200 doors a day, sometimes 500. I meet my neighbour and talk about issues, about positive politics. That’s what being a good neighbour and good advocate for the community is all about.”

Some athletes go into media, coaching or venture into a new industry, new challenges. But for many, they begin by simply going home. Adam van Koeverden is no different.

Water,

Is Taught By Thirst

W

riter, conservationist, and icon Joan Didion’s relationship with water is well documented, and few contemporary artists can lay claim to such a lifelong relationship with our most vital element. In her seminal environmentalist essay “Holy Water” Didion opines, “My own reverence for water has always taken the form of this constant meditation upon where the water is, of an obsessive interest not in the politics of water but in the waterworks themselves, in the movement of water through aqueducts and siphons and pumps and forebays and afterbays and weirs and drains, in plumbing on the grand scale.” The author’s adoration is unmistakable in her prose, it’s poetry mirroring water’s ebb and flow, grace and transparency. One can’t help but be reminded of Didion’s relationship with water when confronted by the works of GTA artist Meaghan Ogilvie, whose own relationship with nature has led to the creation of works that engage with water visually the way Didion’s do textually; with unfettered affection, grace, and the utmost respect. As Ogilive herself writes, “The images I create are intimate interactions between people and nature. Nature is the inspiration behind my work and over the past ten years my focus has been on water—understanding both the beauty and plight of our relationship to it.”

W

hile Didion’s artistic interaction with water tends to be at a distance, Ogilvie wants us to literally get in the water, to experience its every sensation, to revere its playfulness. “Water is life – it’s as simple as that,” says Ogilvie, whose first memory of water may have scared most. “My first memory of water was almost drowning at my family’s pool party. Although I was scared, I remember being fascinated as I looked up to the surface and saw the light come through and the sounds become muffled and muted.” This memory is both prominent and evident in Ogilvie’s work, which places its audience directly within the reverie of water’s power, beauty, and all-encompassing nature.

Ogilvie’s

work is

ambitious

“I want people to explore their own role in these interactions and use the images as a way to spread awareness of environmental issues, as well as encourage a love for the ocean and waterways.” This sentiment has provided an artistic foundation that has seen her celebrated in being shortlisted for the Sony World Award, awarded residencies at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and the Tahsis Art Gallery in Vancouver, and being included

in numerous prominent collections, collectives, commissions, and projects all over the world. Ogilvie’s work is ambitious. Her understanding and affection for conservationism has a deft touch, much like water itself, and asks that we reassociate ourselves with water’s intricacy and emotionality, as well as its utility. “Our connection with water runs much deeper than just washing the dishes and taking a shower. It nourishes, heals, and supports all living things. I think we’ve come so far removed from understanding that. My work is an attempt to re-connect some of what we’ve lost.” The contrast of Didion and Ogilive’s work is not simply rooted in water. Ogilive’s chosen form was the result of textual and artefactual engagement. “I was about ten years old [...] my grandparents had a stack of National Geographic magazines that I loved. My family didn’t have money to travel, so I lived vicariously through the stories and images. They had a huge impact on me. I promised myself I would become a photographer so I too could travel, adventure, constantly learn and inspire others to do the same.”

gilive’s affection for water is palpable, both in her work and conversation. Both reveal and revel in its wonder, its mystery, and its singular essentialness, as during a trip to Pulau, where “it was like Avatar underwater. There were the most incredible and alien-like creatures underwater. Things I never imagined existed.”

“Nature is the

inspiration

behind my work and

over the past

ten years

my focus

has been on

water”

A conversation with Ogilivie begs a trip to the ocean, a dip in a lake, the rush of a spring river’s dissipating floe— submersion and release. “There is so much that I love about water. I love that it never stands still and is constantly changing shape. It is so beautiful as a subject to photograph. I love that it makes me feel so free and curious. When I’m in it, I feel like I’m home and when I’m away from it I feel a longing to get back to it. Words are not enough to tell the depth of meaning I attach to the happiness I feel when I’m in it or on it. Swimming has never been just a physical activity for me. It goes much deeper than physicality — it’s an experience of the spirit and heart. It makes me feel whole and balanced, but what I love most is its ability to connect everything. Through my work, I’ve been connected to people and places all over the world and I’m so grateful for these experiences.”

REAL ESTATE MINUTE Real estate investing is a wise decision and continues to gain momentum each year. Historically, holding your real estate over time instead of selling your real estate was a clever and profitable decision. If you have yet to invest in real estate, today is the perfect time to add real estate into your long-term investment plans and goals. The GTA has many successful locations which, using historical sales trends, predict a rise in future values. The investor can analyze the value of the property versus the lease ability to determine the cost to carry the property versus the income a tenancy will provide. As your real estate partners, we can also project the future value of the property, and rental income, based on historical sales data. This exercise will determine the areas with the highest growth potential and thus the areas that will offer the greatest return on

investment. We’ve provided some sampling of the Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga and Toronto areas to show the average price from 10 years ago, the current price and the predicted price 10 years into the future. Using a 20% deposit and 80% financing, this ratio will help the investor realize the return based on cash investment and equity gained over a 10-year period. To view our investment strategies and calculations, please visit us online at our new website,

We would be happy to meet with you to privately discuss your real estate investment strategies and future wealth creation. Yours truly Christopher Invidiata

PAVING THE WAY TO SUCCESS

2019/20 Private School Guide By Mike Spry

When we were kids, education was easier – it was based on geography and legacy. Draw a radius around your home, and whatever school falls within is yours. And maybe it was your parents’ and theirs, and theirs. It’s how we met our friends, made lifelong connections, and lay the foundation for college and beyond. Schools were how we choose where to live, where to invest in our children and our collective futures. And perhaps we are victims of the success of that structure, of generations of communities investing and reinvesting in the locality of education. Because from those institutions came ingenuity and innovation, ambition and evolution. So as we reap the rewards of the way it was, it’s important that we

consider what has arrived: A diversity of educational choices that fold into a multiplicity of life paths. Schools now are able to offer educations tailored not to geography or tradition, but rather the needs of your children – specialization that caters to your child’s interests and strengths, affords and attends to their challenges. This generation, more than any other, is being offered the opportunity and privilege to be more prepared for the world than any generation has ever known. Athletics, STEM programs, arts, academics, friendships and communities are abounding within the walls of Southern Ontario’s most prominent private schools.

goes beyond traditional expectations of education

Dearcroft Montessori School GRADES: Preschool – 8 • GENDER: Coeducational LIVING: Day

For over 50 years Dearcroft Montessori School, one of Canada’s original Montessori institutions, has been cultivating the most creative, learned, and ambitious toddler, preschool, elementary and junior high cohorts in Ontario. Situated in the lush beauty of a historic estate in Oakville, a stone’s throw from Lake Ontario, the town centre, and the region’s affordance of nature, Dearcroft Montessori School offers more than just an education – it offers a foundation upon which to build a life. Maria Montessori was a pioneer. Italy’s first female doctor “developed a unique ‘scientific pedagogy’ known as the Montessori Method” which has been employed in thousands of schools for over a century all around

the world. It is Montessori’s pedagogical approach, and its evolution, that sets Dearcoft apart from other private and public school options for your children.

A Montessori institution goes beyond traditional expectations of education, and “consciously designs social communities and educational experiences that cultivate the child’s sense of self-awareness and empathy. Montessori learning environments allow for the respect and celebration of the individual spirit within people of all ages.” Through this credo, students are empowered to become and understand all facets of responsibility,

and citizenship, in addition to scholastic goals and expectations. Montessori classrooms are functional and malleable apparatuses devoted to providing a diverse and involved approach to learning, promising “individualized, childcentred programs, enriched programming tailored to meet the needs of each student; multi-age environments; low student-teacher ratios; hands-on; experiential learning; individual and small group lessons and

enriched music and French programming.” Beyond academic pursuits, Dearcroft – within the Montessori spirit – offers students engagement in extracurricular arts, music, language, athletics, and travel programming. A Montessori school is not simply brick and mortar, nor is it the sum of pedagogical pursuits and educational expectation. It is a home, a place where those who have experienced the Montessori mission can find comfort and community, even years after graduation. It is where your child will take their first steps to truly finding themselves.

Given the epic urban sprawl of Canada’s economic and cultural centre, it’s difficult to imagine a vibrant and spacious oasis within Toronto’s concrete jungle. Fortunately, Havergal College prides itself on such imagination, and so among the hustle and bustle of an international cosmopolis, you’ll find the beautiful 22-acre Havergal College campus. But celebrity and aesthetic do not build generations of excellence. That comes from 125 years of a unique understanding of the privilege and responsibility of educating young women. As Havergal’s Executive Director of Strategic Enrollment Management, Maggie Houston-White, notes: “We know how to motivate girls (which is different than how you motivate boys). Even our athletic coaches are trained in this way. Being in an all-girls school means that you continuously have female role models all around you. The Captain of the Chess team is a girl. The Captain of the Soccer team is a girl. The Captain of the Robotics team is a girl. It allows you to see that you can be anything that you want. And the girls grow up here not even realizing that it’s just the way that it is. It gives them the confidence so when they leave here, they don’t question anything. They just do.”

MacLachlan College understands that, at its core, the decision between private and public schools comes down to choice – the choice of how parents wish to design and cultivate their childrens’ learning experiences and shape their futures. At MacLachlan, your child will have the benefit of smaller class sizes, increased attention and home-school communication to ensure progress. MacLachlan is “a highly-engaged school community that fosters a climate of achievement and love of learning.” Essential to that credo is the notion of community itself, an integral part of the school’s programming – both

locally and globally. MacLachlan students interact and engage with diverse communities and pursue initiatives in order to enrich their life experience. Students may also participate in cultural engagement trips to Kenya, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba. And, as a Round Square candidate school, the opportunities for international experiences are even greater. In order to keep up with an ever-evolving pedagogical and technological landscape, MacLachlan has a dedicated curriculum focused on innovation and technology. Their 40 years of educating the minds of tomorrow make them keenly aware of how quickly the world changes, and pride themselves in updating and enhancing all facets of their pedagogy and technology. Beyond prominence and experience, MacLachlan prides itself on a holistic approach to education. Their approach is one that considers the whole student and understands the challenges that await them beyond their MacLachlan years. A commitment to “innovation, global mindedness, health and wellness and real-world connection to student learning” impacts each child’s evolution as both people and students. Walden International School GRADES: PK - 8 • GENDER: Coeducational • LIVING: Day

Henry David Thoreau’s seminal text Walden; or, Life in the Woods inspired the name of Walden International School. He once wrote: “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Confident advancement and the International Baccalaureate programme are the foundations upon which the institution has been built. This coming Fall, the Walden International School will open its second campus in Ontario, on the site of the former Glenburnie School, and continue its tradition of preparing your children for success in the modern world.

In the challenging realities of the present-day economy, education is at the forefront of parents’ concerns. Private schools offer their students what public schools are unable to: smaller class sizes with individualized attention to each and every child’s unique needs; the budgetary flexibility to build the most qualified faculties; and freedom from the role of legislative mandates that do not necessarily have the students’ best interests at heart. Furthermore, Walden includes Service Learning within the tenets of its pedagogy. They believe it to be an essential part of the development of, “student confidence and leadership skills, teaches students the importance of giving, and inspires the commitment to social justice”

in building not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the community of today. Also within those tenets are the understanding and promotion of the roles of technology and innovation, and how they can contribute to critical thinking skills essential in the successes of the modern student. Walden sees wellness as essential to the learning experience, providing students with mindfulness, believing the whole body participates in an education. They are given a voice and responsibility, where the “classroom becomes a forum for collaboration and discovery.” This philosophy is born of Walden’s investment and membership in the world-renowned International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. Walden students are challenged to excel in their studies and individual development to realize personal and academic achievement.
