WORDS FROM THE

EDITOR W

hen summer melts into fall, children settle back into school and adults revise their goals to finish the year on a high note. In this reflective time of year, take time to enjoy the hiking trails and waterfront activities that Ontario has to offer. As the leaves begin to change, the picturesque backdrop is ideal for creating lasting memories with friends and family. Fall welcomes the returns of the fall real estate market which opens up new opportunities to buy, sell and invest. The investment community has had its eye on the Toronto market as it is growing and expanding with opportunities in most pockets. International investors are paying close attention to what is happening in the city. Toronto is the crown and glory of North America and has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. The recent crane index reported 120 cranes are in the air in Toronto. These cranes are building 10- to 80-storey high-rises for a mix of residential and commercial real estate projects. Toronto more than doubles the number of cranes in growing US cities, such as Seattle and Los Angeles, each coming in at 49. The incredible growth shows the confidence that the market has in Toronto. Toronto has reached the status of a Global city giving Canadian and International investors confidence in the Ontario real estate market. The units available to purchase vary in size, amenities and neighbourhood truly offering something for everyone.

A wristwatch isn’t simply a timepiece. It’s an affectation, an accessory, an appendage. The mode by which we document the inevitable march forward toward infinity defines our relationship to the weight of minutes, hours, days. Luxury watchmakers are craftspeople who take pride in knowing that they will be the guardian of your calendar, ensuring each moment is treasured in chronicle. Time is precious. It deserves attention.

1. ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL DAY-DATE 36 The iconic watchmaker’s latest is the descendant of the original waterproof 1926 Rolex Oyster and late '50s Swiss ingenuity which offered the first calendar wristwatch indicating the time, date and day – all notable from a guaranteed waterproof depth of 100 metres. This appendage of affluence is available in 18-ct yellow, white or Everose gold with singular dials and gem-set bezels. And, as a dividend for those with discerning tastes who invest and trust in Rolex, the latest offering from the world's most celebrated watchmaker is a new-generation movement entirely born of ingenuity and century-old attention to precision and perfection. This watch is the reason Rolex is synonymous with timepiece perfection. 2. FRÉDÉRIQUE CONSTANT DOUBLE HEART BEAT Since 1988, this Genevan manufacturer of luxury wristwatches has established itself as an industry force through elegance and acumen. This edition flaunts a delicate colimaçon decoration and 26 jewels are underscored by a rose gold-plated case with 40 diamonds and a convex sapphire crystal. The dial features a unique sunray decoration, eight applied diamonds, and three rose gold-plated indexes. 3. GRAND SEIKO SBGK005 Innovation knows no borders. The Grand Seiko was introduced in 1960, and the industry landscape hasn’t been the same. The SBGK005, from the Elegance Collection, features a power reserve of 72 hours and delivers an accuracy rate of +5 to -3 seconds a day. Its slim design is embellished by a blue Mt. Iwate pattern dial, and Zaratsu polished stainless steel cases highlighting its subtle curves.

4. TUDOR BLACK BAY P01 There is no metric for rarity. Luxury can’t be measured in numbers. But time can. Tudor’s latest in the Black Bay line exemplifies style and function. 42mm steel case, self-winding movement, 70 hours of life, winding crown, waterproof to 200m, an elegant black domed dial accentuated by a sapphire crystal, and completed with a satin finish. 5. GLASHÜTTE ORIGINAL SeaQ PANORAMA DATE The Glashütte name signifies excellence and precision in the craftsmanship of luxury timepieces. This edition's stainless steel, polished and satin-brushed case (waterproof up to 30 bar) with rotating bezel is accented by a sapphire glass back and a galvanic blue with sunray finish dial with Super-LumiNova for optimum visibility in all conditions, in all elements, at all depths. 6. CHOPARD HAPPY SPORT OVAL Time knows no gender, but Chopard does. The iconic watch and jewellery manufacturer has specialized in ladies' timepieces since 1860. Its Happy Sport collection epitomizes their specific, playful and innovative approach to its craft. This edition boasts twenty-seven jewels, with two sapphire crystals, white diamonds and coloured stones. Elegant, sophisticated, and timely. 7. BREITLING NAVITIMER AUTOMATIC 41 A casual relationship with time isn’t within an aviator’s purview. Since 1884, Breitling has outfitted discerning wrists ten, twenty, thirty-five thousand feet above the ground. Their Navitimer Automatic 41 takes pride in respecting a century of timepiece tradition and the demands of an astute market, powered by a COSC-certified chronometer, and coated with a luminescent material prominent in all lighting conditions.

The Policaro Foundation’s annual community Track Day took place on May 28th, 2019. The popular Track Day provides the community with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with professional Motorsport race car drivers while raising funds for the SickKids fetal cardiac diagnosis and treatment centre. The proceeds help meet a critical need for the Labatt Family Heart Centre at SickKids by building capacity for Canada’s primary fetal cardiac diagnosis and treatment centre. The Foundation began in 2018 with the intention of raising $550,000 over 5 years. Track Day combines fun and rare opportunities for the community as the optimal way to raise funds and give back to their supporters. This year marked the second annual Track Day which raised an impressive $160,000. Francesco Policaro, CEO of Policaro Group remarked, “What an incredible day. We were beyond grateful that our community came out to support such a worthwhile cause.” He continued to express, “Our business was built on the foundation of community, and seeing the community support a cause so close to our hearts was truly amazing.” Track Day is a fun-filled day for families and community members that takes place at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The day offers many exhilarating attractions including the popular hot laps provided by Policaro Motorsport race car drivers. The vehicles have been modified from one seat to two to accommodate a passenger for the exciting ride along. Attendees ride along on a closed circuit in a Porsche GT3 Cup Car or a BMW M4 GT4. 30 | FALL 2019

The track accommodated up to 15 Go-Karts simultaneously - may the best driver win.

The Invidiata Team sponsored the 2019 Track Day. Caleb Invidiata attended the event and was thrilled to experience first hand the sharp driving skills of Policaro Motorsport professional driver Ethan Simioni. As a sponsor, The Invidiata Team enjoys giving back to the community and raising funds for the SickKids fetal cardiac diagnosis and treatment centre. When asked if he would return next year, Caleb enthusiastically remarked, “Absolutely, I can’t wait.”

THE FACILITY EXPANSION New opportunities for EarlyON Burlington BY TARA MacINTOSH

s

new parents, the life you once knew is forever changed. As you adjust to your new life, community support and resources are invaluable. ROCK is the lead for EarlyON centres in Burlington providing support to parents of young children in the Burlington community. ROCK opens its doors to help young families learn in a healthy and supportive environment.

THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM | 35

T

his

year, due in large part to a very generous $2,000,000 donation from the Warren Y. Soper Charitable Trust, ROCK is expanding. EarlyON Child and Family Centre is a program that allows parents and children to have a safe and comforting place to grow as a family. In a recent survey, over 70% of families say they are better equipped to deal with day-to-day challenges after receiving the support this program offers. The program, designed to support families through the early stages of learning and development, is funding provincially through the Ministry of Education and administered through the Region of Halton. Taking part in the EarlyON program allows families with young children to socialize together and lean on each other as their children play and interact together. EarlyON staff are Registered Early Childhood Educators. Once families arrive, the playtime, exploration and learning strengthens the relationships 36 | FALL 2019

between parents and children. 72% of parents express they understand their child or children better after having visited ROCK. The centre relieves the isolation new parents feel and provides a welcoming space to express concerns and work through the challenges of parenthood. The EarlyON Child and Family Centres at ROCK are drop-in with no required registration to accommodate flexible schedules. They have removed all barriers to entry to make the centre easily accessible for parents. Different ages require different stimulation and the centre is aware and responsive to these needs. ROCK’s EarlyON program offers a variety of learning environments, for example, sing-alongs, fitness programs and outdoor nature programs year round. The programs are designed to support early development and encourage exploration. In a 2018 survey, 94% of parents expressed their child has more opportunity to explore new environments and play with people from different backgrounds as a result of this program. As the children are interacting, the staff help the parents identify how their child is learning new skills and what activities are contributing to the growth and development of their child. As a result, 75% of parents stated they are more aware of what to expect from their child at his or her age and 77% feel more confident as a parent or caregiver.

ROCK and EarlyON Child and Family Centre has made an effort to be inclusive by targeting outreach programs for families in low-income areas, offering programs specific to sensitive and special needs, as well as provide programs that cater specifically to new fathers. They also offer partnership programs in the community to build collaborative relationships with like-minded community organizations and groups. The centre encourages children to socialize, play and learn while also providing parents with an education for those early childhood years.

ROCK is a resource for families and a place that is well regarded for parental support and guidance. In 2018, 17,000 visits were made to the centre by 23,000 unique families. ROCK remains a popular place for families in the community to learn and grow. As the word spreads regarding the success of our EarlyON programs, there is a need for more spaces to accommodate the growing demand. ROCK is growing to meet those needs. This year, due in large part to a very generous $2,000,000 donation from the Warren Y. Soper Charitable Trust, ROCK is expanding. The donation will directly contribute to building a new 20,000square-foot facility at the main Burlington location on the corner of Pearl Street and James Street. The additional space will provide a permanent home for the internationally Renowned Centre of Learning and Windz Institute, as well as allow more families access to the EarlyON Child and Family Centre, soon to be located in the same facility as other ROCK programs. Currently, the main EarlyOn centre has a capacity of only 25 children and 25 adults. The expansion will accommodate more families and community members as EarlyON will have the opportunity to run 2+ programs simultaneously. The new facility, located in a centralized downtown location, will be more accessible due to downtown bus routes. Having several ROCK programs and services co-located under the same roof will provide seamless access to children’s mental health resources for the whole community.

If you would like more information on how to get involved with our building, ROCK or the EarlyON program please contact Stephanie Wilsack at stephaniew@rockonline.ca. Drop by our facility any time to learn more about ROCK – the door is always open. THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM | 37

style An ‘elevation’ of Georgian Renovations:

and Taste

Stunning contrasts and elegant design – and décor choices that make these come to life: these elements make 2 Thomas Reid Road, in North Markham, Ontario, a sight to behold, not to mention a place of uncompromised luxury in which to live.

The team behind this 6,000 square-foot, 5-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home’s renovation comprises Gene Maida, Georgian Renovations’ president, and his coterie of award-winning architects, interior designers and decorators. Their stunning remodelling of some of the area’s most sought-after residences have put them on the map as

“the place to go” for homeowners seeking unparalleled charm and vision in the realization of their dreams. Set in Markham’s prestigious Victoria Square neighbourhood and surrounded by mature trees, the residence at 2 Thomas Reid Road needed to live up to its classy surroundings. Georgian Renovations exceeded this challenge. “Tempered grandeur” is the term Maida uses to describe the home. While these words’ combined use may seem surprising at first, a deeper look at the residence reveals they are à propos. Let’s step inside…

BY NICOLETTE LITTLE

Georgian takes ceilings to new heights

THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM | 41

kitchen The Kitchen

The entrance hall’s magnificence is superseded only by that of the combined kitchen and living area. Immediately upon entering this space, the visitor’s attention is drawn to a spectacular north-facing wall made up entirely of floor-to-ceiling windows, and interrupted only by centrally placed French glass doors. Here, residents and guests can gaze out over a backyard space that will soon contain the “must-have” accoutrements of a high-end lifestyle: a pool, cabana, hot tub and water features, as well as an outdoor kitchen, fire table and seating area under a gazebo.

ent r ance hall The Entrance Hall

A long, airy and well-lit entrance hall – flanked on each side by floor-to-ceiling white wood panelling, and boasting a floor laid with high-end grey-veined white porcelain – is made even more grand by the addition of a chandelier suspended from a high coffered ceiling. This hallway emanates lightness, class and elegance. Yet perhaps its most captivating feature is a commanding, dark, custom-designed oak door at the hall’s end. The use of stark contrasts in this space captures guests’ attention immediately upon their arrival at the home. It also belies the artistry that continues throughout the residence.

42 | FALL 2019

living room The Living Room

Georgian Renovations has decorated the living room space in a way that makes the most of this outdoor view. In the living area, plush grey couches encircle a gas fireplace. Family and guests alike, while chatting over appetizers and a glass of wine or with a coffee and book in hand, for example, can lounge beside the fire while also taking in this impressive backyard.

Maida notes that Georgian takes a “holistic approach” to the “elevation of clients’ style.” It makes sense, then, that the light airiness seen elsewhere in the home is continued in the kitchen, with its white and grey-veined Caesar stone-topped counters and island, and white and grey backsplash. This elegance does not come, however, at the expense of a well-appointed kitchen. According to Maida, “There’s more technology in this kitchen than in a car:” it has been engineered for a busy cook, boasting high-end appliances, recessed valance cabinet lighting, magic corner organization units, cutlery drawers, recycling units, a kitchen sink with four cutting boards, and more. In addition to the abovementioned spaces, bathrooms, staircases and a completed recreation room space that has been fitted as a private cinema – all speak to calibre of design and ingenuity one can expect of a Georgian Renovations project. A winding staircase takes visitors up through multiple landings, each adorned with large windows that look out over mature trees, while allowing natural light into the home. The ensuite bathroom is particularly magnificent. Fitted with a free-standing soaker tub, and best described as airy and

spacious, it allows the bather to luxuriate while enjoying an outdoor view of the trees’ rustling leaves. All spaces in 2 Thomas Reid Road share one thing in common: there is total attention to detail in the use of trim, wood panelling, archways and coffered ceilings – while each room, upon completion, has been fitted with the perfect décor to enhance the area. Indeed, Georgian Renovations is known for being a “merger of design practices,” as well as a “onestop shop,” when it comes to creating lavish spaces. As Maida continues, “In addition to designing and renovating your home, we take care of the drapery, textures, furniture. We do a complete transformation.” This has been immensely reassuring for clients who often have an idea of what they want in their dream home, but aren’t sure where to start. Beginning with a consultation with Georgian Renovations’ design team, and through weekly work-in-progress reports, clients such as 2 Thomas Reid Road’s owners feel that working with Maida’s team is like “seeing our dream house come to life before our eyes.” So, what will your dream home look like? How Edilka Anderson’s design vision revolutionized North American décor By Nicolette Little

W

hen Edilka Anderson met Carla Guzman in 2017, it was the beginning of a close friendship. Anderson, a mother of three, found herself on a journey to find new ways of creatively expressing her love for business and décor. “I wanted to feel good about waking up every day, and to rediscover my joy and passion,” she recalls. Guzman, on the other hand, who was a radio and television design personality and ran a major bridal show in Venezuela, moved back to Toronto after 21 years due to Venezuela’s intensifying political situation. Both women collaborated on high-end home design projects in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and found in each other someone who similarly wanted to “fulfill people’s dreams and passion for creating.”

When Anderson decided to bring European design house KARE’s (pronounced like the French word, carré, or, phonetically, car-ray) products to Toronto, Ontario, becoming the first ever North American franchisee for this sought-after German designer, she immediately invited Guzman to work for her. “We’re like sisters,” Anderson notes, continuing that “she was the very first person I called.”

N

ow, with access to over 5,000 high-end design products, which Anderson offers her eager GTA clientele, Anderson is watching KARE’s rapid expansion across the continent with pride: a Vancouver location opened this past June, while a Los Angeles store is set to welcome homeowners and designers in August. KARE Toronto’s success story is predicated on Anderson’s commitment to an artistic dream, her sustaining friendship with Guzman, and the even larger success of a reputed brand with global appeal.

Edilka Anderson & Carla Guzman KARE’s location on Toronto’s trendy Queen St. West hints at the fashionability of its designs. “Many of our pieces are statement pieces,” states Anderson, who notes that their clientele are “young at heart, have something to say, and want to say it through their home and space.” While KARE has “a curated selection” of products on display at the Queen West location, Guzman and Anderson emphasize they 48 | FALL 2019

have unlimited access to 1000s more online through their parent company in Munich: “There are so many chairs, for example, so many colours, and so many textures. KARE has funky, cool, high-end stuff, and this fits with the brand’s larger motto, which captures the joy of living.” The diversity of KARE’s over 5000 products also ensures there is something to suit everybody. “Sure, we do high-end commercial and residential projects in the downtown core,” Anderson states, “but we also design and decorate homes spanning the GTA. Our residential clients are typically high-end homeowners who are looking for unique Euroflair.”

clients, ensuring they are pleased with the proposed enhancements. Finally, Guzman and Anderson help clients select pieces based on this design plan, offering a special KARE discount, then order and install items. “There’s a psychological aspect to this work,” Guzman notes, continuing, “whether a client is moving to a new space, pursuing a lifestyle change, or simply wants newness, our job is to figure out the essence of their hopes and dreams, and realize it through their décor.”

A little about KARE’s parent company, which has a longer history as a key European design brand. Based in Munich, KARE boasts 100 locations, across 45 countries, worldwide. This company offers franchisees access to a panoply of design products, which store directors like Anderson then select based on the preferences of their home market: in this case, both Toronto and the GTA’s trendy and inspired, as well as more traditionally elegant crowds. KARE is associated with the utmost in quality, class and trendsetting in Europe – something North America’s market has

been quick to pick up on, given the store’s quick spread to other cities. For both designers and individual clients, KARE Toronto provides one-stop interior design, decorating and, if desired, installation support. “We take care of all aspects of the decorating process,” Anderson notes, “making sure that customers are supported throughout.” First, Anderson and Guzman meet individually with clients, developing a creative plan based on a client’s vision for their space or lifestyle. Then, Guzman and Anderson review this plan with

KARE Toronto has also recently collaborated with larger corporate clients. Earlier this year, they decorated the Hotel des Particuliers, a trendy hotel in the historical heart of Old Quebec City. Guzman and Anderson worked directly with designers on this project, and apparently “the hotel wanted to feature one of our newest statement pieces of the time, hologram mirrors, throughout.” KARE’s pieces have since been featured throughout this hotel’s marketing and promotional photos. Projects such as these have helped fuel the increasing North American demand for KARE. There is no end to KARE’s ability to ensure each client’s or designer’s needs are fulfilled. In fact, this brand has become synonymous with creativity, flair and class when it comes to home design and decoration in Canada. kare-toronto.com THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM | 49

LINDSAY RICE:

TORONTO TO THE TRACK WITH CANADA’S NEXT GREAT RACE CAR DRIVER BY MIKE SPRY For most drivers, our first car was a beater, a hand-me-down, a lemon; something discarded by a parent, an aunt, or an older sibling. It didn’t offer much in terms of style or status, but it represented something bigger: freedom, independence, escape. For most drivers, our first car was simply a vehicle – both literal and figurative – to something else, to somewhere else, to someone else. For most drivers, our first car was not about driving or affection for engineering or a gateway to a future behind the wheel.

56 | FALL 2019

THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM | 57

The Mississauga-born race car driver’s first car was the ride of most of our dreams. “A 2008 V6 Mustang, with the Pony Package,” she recalls. “I modified the car quite a bit over the years. Lowered suspension, Rotiform wheels, sound system…” It’s enough to break the nostalgic youthful hearts of those of us who boasted an ’86 Honda Civic Wagovan, a ’76 Volvo with unmatched doors, or a bright red ’89 Chevette our grandmother was too embarrassed to continue driving. But those of us in nana’s castoff Chevy did not have a future in racing on the road (and track) ahead of us.

Rice began racing cars later than most who turn to auto racing as a career, but she quickly made up for the lost time. On the first weekend of her career, in a Porsche 911 no less, Rice took four podiums. However, her need for speed found her as a youngster. At just 13 years of age, Rice knew that excellence in acceleration would be a big part of her life.

Photo: Scarfone Photo

means manual transmission, a raw car feel (in its handling and responses), and the ability to take corners nice and fast—hard suspension and low centre of gravity. Of course, it would be a sports car. Think Audi R8 (gated shifter, please!) or a Porsche 911 variant (perhaps an old modified 930).” But to the lay-driver, how do those choices differ from her competitive car? “I would say that it is the same. As a race car driver, you always want the raw feel of the car. This is why we sit in a bucket seat that is literally bolted to the car's body. This helps you to feel every movement the car makes, and how the car is reacting to your inputs in the pedals and steering wheel. The only thing I look for in a street car versus a race car is the

“I used to drive my Sea-Doo at the cottage really fast when I was 13 years old [which] got me addicted to speed. When I turned 15, I was allowed to drive my sister’s car around the block for 20 minutes or so a day. This is what got me hooked – driving fast on pavement. (Don't get me wrong, I still go fast on the Sea-Doo). Once I felt the power of sitting behind the wheel of a car, the rest was history.”

“I cannot stand when someone doesn't use their blinker,” she laughs. However, Rice finds “a lot of joy in my daily drives. Especially when there is no one on the road.” While her Audi sparks her competitive fire, it’s a 2016 Golf R named “Manuel” that gets her from points A to B. A discerning driver, she looks for a car that she can “feel connected to and in control of. That

Photo: Lenssen Photo

Four years into what appears to be a racing career without limits on either accomplishment or talent, Rice says what she loves most about driving is simple: the power, which she finds in her Audi RS3 LMS. With three career victories and eleven podiums, Rice is an explosive and talented driver. But how does she manage on the roads with the rest of us?

THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM | 59

radio for my tunes – and a key to start the car so no one steals it (my Audi RS3 LMS is turned on by a button).” The everyday driver also benefits greatly from the technology that is born of the racing circuits. “Many car manufacturers build race cars to get data for their newest car models coming out to the consumer market,” Rice adds. “The same goes for brake companies, tire companies, data acquisition companies, race apparel companies, etc. Racing is a great setting to get high-level data because the cars and gear we are in are being brought to their performance limit for extended periods of time. It really pushes the threshold of whatever components we are using.

60 | FALL 2019

The automotive industry and motorsports in general have been traditionally geared towards men. But as she drives through glass ceilings, Rice sees changes approaching quickly in her rear-view mirror: “In the past five to ten years, car manufacturers have aimed their marketing more towards females than ever before [and] starting to understand their market. Being a female in car racing over the past four years has brought so many amazing women to my ‘doorstep’, telling me how much they have wanted to get behind the wheel on the track, but haven’t. This has opened my eyes to just how many women are out there interested in automotive and motorsport but haven’t taken those steps yet.”

Photo: Sharp Strategies

Photo: Lenssen Photo

There is also a fantastic marketing side to racing because it is unlike many sports out there. Attendees of race weekends can actually come up to the team trailer and sit in my Audi RS3 LMS race car, engage with me, see me before and after the races, etc. It is very interactive, so this gives a lot of interaction with consumer products, experiences, and opportunities. And what can’t she live without, on the track and on the highway? “Tires.”

Photo: Lenssen Photo

So how do others follow in Rice’s tread marks? “I do understand that it’s a little tricky to get into motorsport, but buying a sports car is probably your first step to getting on track! I run the Ladies Track Experience out at Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit and I can say that the women who I have been instructing have almost all been first-timers on track, and are absolutely fantastic at performance driving. I believe it’s just about breaking those mental barriers of what we can/can’t do and getting yourself out there.”

SHEZ MEHRA COMES HOME AND TAKES OVER OUR EARS BY DC RUTHERFORD

64 | FALL 2019

TURNING BRANDING ALL THE WAY UP

Shez Mehra is the embodiment of the contemporary Canadian dream. New to Canada as a 10-year-old, by the time he was 13 he was fully engrossed in his new home’s culture. At 13, Shez got into collecting vinyl and immersed himself in hip hop and DJ culture. He began playing Toronto’s hottest clubs before he could even legally get into them, all the while getting a business degree from the University of Guelph. His love for music took him around the globe and back, DJ’ing at the world’s best venues, and for the music industry’s biggest acts. He was Drake’s original DJ. He played at the Playboy Mansion. He had everything a DJ could want, and he was only 25. And he gave it all up to build more. At 25 he proposed to his high school sweetheart and began a new chapter as one of Canada’s most inspired and singular marketing voices. He launched The 194 Group, a company dedicated to entertainment and booking. But, despite his success – and as he had done with his DJ career – he transformed and adapted to engage in, and adapt to, new challenges. The 194 Group pivoted into producing not just events but building brand experiences. “I was [DJing] in places where they didn’t even speak English,” recalls Mehra. “But they could sing the lyrics of an English song. And I was able to influence them and control them

THEINVIDIATACOLLECTION.COM | 65

through sound. That’s when I started really thinking about how music truly is a universal language. And we began asking the question: Do you know what your brand sounds like?” Then and there, the idea for Audio Branding was born. But was the market ready to invest in reaching clients and customers auditorily? “Unfortunately, I couldn’t extract any revenue out of that vertical, and it was really tough to get marketers to understand what the hell I was talking about. But in my mind, if you can influence people and physiology and behavior [with music], clearly it can resonate with brands trying to do the same thing.”

THERE’S A REALLY UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY RIGHT NOW FOR BRANDS TO

Years later, the rest of us caught up with Mehra and The 194 Group. “All of a sudden, it was as though the industry woke up and said, LEND THEMSELVES ‘Maybe we should consider one of our five senses as part of our marketing.’ There’s a really unique opportunity right now for brands to lend themselves TO SOUND. to sound. Traditionally, a brand and branding are completely aesthetic with a visual identity.” The initiative recently was awarded a Cannes Lion Award (for creative communications, advertising, and marketing fields) for their work with Telus and Cossette. But, as with all things Shez Mehra engages in, it didn’t end there. He expanded the philosophy into the service industry. Raina is a B2B music solution unlike any other for the retail, fitness, and hospitality industries, with clients such as Public Hotel and Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City, Surfcomber in Miami, and restaurants like Reyna On King, Rad Pizza, and Mexicue. “Three years ago we were having an expensive lunch at a hotel, and the music was completely off-brand and clashing with the atmosphere; we were all asking: How does this make any sense? We started researching the space, analyzing the solution that background music service providers offered. And we realized they’re all the same.” Poor curation and infrequent updates were adversely affecting businesses. Raina is not a playlist service; it’s a virtual DJ, a platform of seamlessly blended mixes, crafted by humans and powered by technology. With the understanding that each space is unique, Raina works with businesses to craft their custom sound identity. It’s updated daily, so no two days

66 | FALL 2019

are ever the same, and caters to individuality. Again, Mehra refused to rest on his laurels. He added a non-profit initiative to his audio-centric collective. Born of the experience a close friend had with his dying father, and their ability to grieve and heal and love through the power of music, “Thank You Music is a platform for music lovers and musicians to share their experiences with music as a healing power and positive energy [...] It’s a way to give people a platform to share their stories.” Though in the early stages, Thank You Music promises to be a powerful vehicle to use the connections Mehra has made in his travels and career in order to further their mission of bringing sound to the forefront of your lives and businesses. We’re sure you’ll hear about it.

AMBITION, ASCENSION, AND THE AFFLUENCE OF AUTOMOTIVE IMAGINATION

2019/20 LUXURY AUTOMOTIVE BUYING GUIDE

I

BY MIKE SPRY

t has been a long and winding road for the car. Flemish missionary Ferdinand Verbiest designed a steam-powered model in China in the 17th century – but it didn’t carry passengers. In the 18th century, Frenchman Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built a steam-powered artillery tractor – but it offered more futility than utility. In the 19th century, ingenuity moved to England and North America, where varying attempts at steam and internal combustion celebrated ingenuity, if not practicality. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen was the first consumer automobile in Europe, beginning the German manufacturer’s legacy as one of Europe’s finest cars, and the Ford Model-T christened the American automotive landscape in 1906. And the world was never the same.

What every car has in common – from Verbiest onwards – is aspiration, the drive to achieve something great. But even once utility is achieved, aspiration persists. This is why we have classes of cars – built by ambition, designed by ingenuity, and crafted for discernment. When these qualities meet, when dream and reality are informed by desire, our roads are blessed not just by the feats of invention, but by the affluence of imagination. In these pages, you’ll find the latest culmination of our finest ambitions. Whether it’s the Volvo XC60 Luxury Crossover SUV, Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered, 2019 Audi e-tron, 2019 Maserati Levante SUV, 2019 Porsche Panamera 4 Sport Turismo, 2020 Cadillac XT6, or 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC SUV, each vehicle in this feature is born of ambition – both by manufacturer and consumer alike. Our desires propel these automotive giants to impossible heights. We reap the benefits of own imaginations. We drive our dreams. Open the door to possibility, to adventure, to ingenuity. Open the door to your next ambition.

THE REVOLUTION OF THE SHOOTING-BRAKE

T

he shooting-brake is a style of automobile that is part tradition, part modernity, revels in utility, and celebrates the needs of the 21st-century car owner. The original was a horse-drawn carriage, that carried gamesmen, their wares, their trappings, and their rewards of sport. But far from being an anachronism, the part SUV part coupe has evolved into the ideal car for the demands of the contemporary driver. And with those demands come expectations of ingenuity, of style, of function, and sophistication. The 2019 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo satiates those expectations. The Panamera Sport Turismo has come to define the shooting-brake’s evolution. This particular revolution, like all movements, is born of want, desire, and demand; forged in the pedigree of a German automotive icon, the engineering of one of the world’s foremost manufacturers, and the ingenuity and imagination that can only come from Porsche. The Panamera 4 Sport Turismo is offered with the standard 330-hp turbocharged V-6, a twin-turbo V-6 that achieves 457 horsepower in the E-Hybrid, or a 677-hp

The unmistakably, most powerful car in its class. The power and feats of engineering are complemented by a stylish and functional interior, with all the trappings and cargo space one could need for a shooting-break. Originally introduced to showrooms and highways in 2010, the latest

offering from the second generation of the Panamera has evolved in its elegance and substance and is now the stylistic realization of a nearly peerless model in a select marketplace. The 2019 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is not just the realization of the shooting-brake revolution, but rather a movement unto itself: a luxury hybrid that aspires to the principles of a sedan, the utility of an SUV, and the style of a racing coupe.

AUDI E-TRON

TEST DRIVE THE FUTURE, I TODAY

n 1910, Audi’s first automobile rolled off German production lines. The Audi Type A Sport-Phaeton boasted a four-cylinder, 4-stroke engine that topped out at 75 kilometres-an-hour. Prideful of the accomplishment, but unsatisfied with stasis, after producing 175 Type As, it was replaced just a year later by the Type B—with a slightly better design and performance. That kind of drive for automotive excellence is exemplified by a century of wondering: What’s next? A hundred years later, Audi is still pushing the limits of automotive engineering, and its assembly lines still pride themselves on producing some of the world’s most exceptional luxury automobiles. The 2019 Audi e-tron is the ultimate in eco-automotive technology and

hat sound you just heard emanate from the breath of the collective automotive industry was an exhalant sigh: Attention Acura MDXs, Audi Q7s, BMW X5s, and Volvo XC90s; you’re going to have to share the road because there’s a new competitor in the three-row crossover SUV market, and it’s a Caddy. After making its debut at the North American International Auto Show this past January in Detroit, Cadillac’s latest model is finally ready to debut in your driveway.

And this debut offers everything that the expectations of the Cadillac brand suggest: innovation, ingenuity, and respect – for tradition, for its loyal drivers, and for their loved ones. And more. Besides the Cadillac name, the XT6’s power-folding third-row seat and remote fold-down for its secondrow seat set a new standard for functionality and design in the crossover SUV market. Full connectivity partnered with a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot means the 2020 XT6 enters 2020 fully prepared for the digital age. The new Cadillac is the ultimate balance between the convictions of an icon with the contemporary amenities of a century-old tradition of automotive excellence. The style of the XT6 is born of a giant’s imagination and nostalgia. hat comes to mind when we think of Mercedes-Benz? The iconic three-pointed star logo? The Formula 1 excellence of Juan Manuel Fangio, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, and Nico Rosberg? Over one hundred years of innovation? Thirteen starring roles in James Bond films? Its prominent place in pop culture fantasy? In real-world dreams?

Arguably – more than anything – Mercedes-Benz elicits notions of automotive excellence. Perhaps no other automobile that has been blessed with the opportunity to grace our driveways, highways, and raceways has become more synonymous with our very ideal of what a vehicle should be. And, as such, it should be no surprise that the GLA 250 4MATIC SUV fits perfectly within that ethos. The Mercedes-Benz entrant in the crossover SUV market has been among the best in its class since it entered the race. Not a surprise, given its Mercedes-Benz pedigree. Insurance & Climate Change Why has my Insurance gone up? Have you recently received your home insurance and noticed a significant rate increase? Did you contact your Insurance Broker to help you understand why? Homes in more rural settings with no hydrants and only fire hall protection, are at a greater risk for fire damage. If your home is close to a body of water or on flat low lying land, there is a higher risk for surface water entering the home. These factors can adversely affect your rates. Climate change has had a significant impact on insurance rates. Insurance Companies are facing challenges, which are a direct result of climate change with rising water levels, an increased number of wildfires, hailstorms, windstorms and rainstorms. As a result of increased claims costs, home insurance rates have risen. Wild fires, such as those that burned out of control in Fort McMurray, across Northern Alberta and into Saskatchewan before being extinguished in 2016, or in British Columbia in 2017 and 2018 caused over $10 billion in damages at great cost to the Insurance Industry as a whole. The May 4th 2018 windstorm that impacted Ontario and Quebec generated insurance costs in excess of $410 million. Ice storms, such as the one in 2013, that impacted Ontario, cost the city of Toronto alone over $106 million. Ice damage to docks and boat houses or residences located on the water is also on the rise. Despite these and other similar large fire losses, water is now the leading cause of claims for Insurers. Sudden rainstorms which drop a large volume of water over a very short time span or following an extended dry spell result in a rapid accumulation of surface water as storm drains meet their capacity and dry ground is unable to absorb the water fast enough. Prolonged rainfall that causes rivers and lakes to rise generate more water damage. 1.800.661.1518 | danlawrie.com/Signature

Water claims caused by heavy rainfall in 2013 in Toronto alone, exceeded $850 million. Ontario and Quebec experienced more record breaking flooding during the spring of 2019. Surface water that enters your home through doors, window wells, or balconies may cause significant damage to finished basements, walls, floors and appliances. Average costs for water damage in a basement for the lean up and sterilization alone to prevent mould may be upwards of $30,000. Furnishings and other contents may require cleaning or replacement. Speak to your insurance broker to ensure you have no gaps in your coverage and to discuss loss mitigation steps that could prevent potential claims and, in some instances, help to reduce your premium. Confirm that you have coverage for waste water (commonly referred to as Sewer Backup), and Overland Water coverage, wherever possible. Some, but not all, markets are also able to offer coverage for ice damage. Be sure to ask your broker or agent what your policy includes coverage for and what is excluded. The installation of sump pumps, sewer backflow valves and water leak detection systems, can help to prevent or reduce water damage in your home and may qualify you for additional discounts on your home insurance. We, at Lawrie Insurance Group, welcome the opportunity to further discuss your Insurance needs along with more ideas on how to best protect your home and family from climate change related issues.
