EMERALD CLUB EXUMA

Choosing a vacation spot is often overwhelming. The world is filled with picturesque beaches and tropical paradises, all eager to attract snowbirds looking to escape the dark chill of Canadian winters. That sense of burden can infect a vacation before it even begins, and complications can increase exponentially when we look to vacation with other families—taking our communities away with us. The logistics of organizing the location and coordination of a multi-family vacation are ultimately time-consuming, and time on a vacation comes at a premium. You want water sports, beaches, luxury fivestar dining, adventure, and golf on a world-class, Greg Norman-designed private course.

The most beautiful sights and scenes a tropical paradise has to offer.

In this issue, we are giving you exclusive access to four luxury homes (which back onto Norman’s course) in a gated tropical paradise that are just waiting to entertain and host you and your friends (and their kids, and their kids, and their friends) this winter. You have the opportunity to be among the first guests to enjoy the decadence of the Bahamas in these peerless units. The Great Exuma, Georgetown, Emerald Bay region is everything the luxury traveller could ever want in a location, and the gated community that houses these villas provides the optimum accommodations.

Exuma is indisputably one of the planet’s most spectacular locales. A magical collection of over 365 islands right along the Tropic of Cancer, the crown jewel of the Bahamas promises utopian cays, fresh seafood, a culture unto itself, and the most beautiful sights and scenes a tropical paradise has to offer.

Of course, the region is known for its infamous swimming pigs—non-indigenous guests just like you, who’ll swim up to boats to greet visitors as they make land.

This January, four brand-new villas will become available to rent, and trust us: They’ll be booked soon. Located in the Bahamas, these are massive new constructions that can house as many as twenty people, with access to the region’s most beautiful beaches and tropical waters, not to mention the infamous Thunderball Grotto from James Bond lore. Add to that world-famous locations like Bitter Guana Cay, where an endangered species of Bahamian rock iguanas roam the beaches; Allen Cay, a cluster of three uninhabited reef-traced islands at the north end of the Exumas; Starfish Beach, where the singular echinoderms will gleefully pose for pictures; or Compass Cay, where you can swim with nurse sharks.

EXUMA SELLS ITSELF;

it’s a postcard among postcards in one of the world’s most resplendent regions. But a trip is only as good as its accommodations, and these new homes are exceptional. The two-storey villas are straight out of a dream. Each features over 5,000 square feet of living space on pristine property with a pool. The first floors offer bright, spacious designs boasting restaurant-quality kitchens, dining rooms seating fourteen-plus, and multi-functional living rooms perfect for winding down with TV, video games, and respite after a long day of sun and fun. The first floor also has a beautiful master suite with a walk-in closet and full bath with his-and-hers sinks, perfect for accessibility for grandma and grandpa or some space for mum and dad.

The second floors promise six additional suites. Yes, you read that right: six! Each suite has its own full bathroom, while many feature walk-in

closets as well. There’s also a TV/family room area on the second floor, which allows for a quiet escape. Each room is bright and spacious, with elegant designs and clean lines, and views of the enticement of the tropics.

The current Airbnb listing for the owner’s completed properties gives you a preview of what to expect. One recent guest wrote, “Everything as advertised in the pictures, but maybe better!” How is that possible? Look at the pictures. Another guest championed their hosts by claiming, “This is our eighth year in the Bahamas and by far the best place!” No matter the size of your group, the time of year of your visit, or if you’re looking for activity or a sedentary stay, you’ll be in the best of hands.

Once you’ve luxuriated in the villas’ magnificence, the Bahamas offer you paradisiacal experiences like no other place on earth. Simply put: the attractions are seemingly endless. Close

Live the dream at Tall Timbers Resort

FROM ITS GORGEOUS TWO-STOREY GREAT ROOM TO ITS UPDATED CLASSIC BOATHOUSE, TALL TIMBERS IS A VERY SPECIAL PROPERTY THAT SHARES BOTH MODERN LUXURY AND A SENSE OF THE STORIED MUSKOKA RESORT TRADITION.

Listen carefully and you can hear it, floating faintly on the breeze: the distant sound of a clarinet playing soft jazz over the murmured beat of a dance band. This was Muskoka 100 years ago, one of the most fashionable and envied vacation destinations in eastern Canada and the northeastern U.S. That legacy has continued through the decades, and you can still feel it when you

visit Tall Timbers, a breathtaking, resort-like property on Lake Joseph.

The cottage may be thoroughly modern in every respect, but a reverence for the great Muskoka tradition runs through its heart, from its truly majestic, two-storey timber-frame great room, to its 17 cozy bedrooms (with 14+4 baths), classic two-slip Muskoka boathouse and private guesthouse.

FOR A VIRTUAL TOUR

The cottage may be thoroughly modern in every respect, but a reverence for the great Muskoka tradition runs through its heart

SCAN

The main cottage sprawls a roomy 12,000+ square feet on two levels, overlooking 380 feet of pristine Lake Joe shoreline. It’s perfect for multiple families or an extended family, for entertaining and weekend parties for a crowd of friends, or to operate as a charming B&B, short-term rental property, or – in the grand Muskoka tradition – as a luxury resort and inn. (In fact, the property is currently zoned for commercial use.)

Alight from the paved drive, and enter through bright double French doors to the roomy foyer; the great room rises just to your left. You might choose to warm your toes by the huge, granite-

lined fireplace (one of four wood-burning fireplaces in the cottage). Perhaps you’d prefer to sit by the window and drink in that amazing view, enjoy an intimate chat with a friend, or join in a lively conversation with a group. Or maybe just pull up a chair and listen to the grand piano being played in a cozy corner at the end of the room. There are so many ways to enjoy life in this room.

Next, make your way along the glazed breezeway, which runs along the lakeside elevation of the cottage, to the well-appointed chef’s kitchen. With its multiple islands and work areas, it’s big enough for several chefs (either

full-time or catering staff), or as a gourmet cook’s dream come true. The kitchen features an open pass-through, directly facing the view, that can seat kids for lunch or function as a station for servers or buffet guests. There’s also plenty of room for informal meals for up to six at the L-shaped island.

Down to the lower level, and you’ve found the grown-ups’ playroom: a generous space with two bars, wine cellar, room for a full-size pool table,

and multiple French doors that open out onto comfy seating on the shaded, granite-flagstone patio. On warm summer afternoons, you can open the doors fully to let in the lakeside breezes; on a rainy day, curl up by the big fireplace at the other end and watch the game.

As evening comes on, stroll past the main patio a few steps up to the firepit, and enjoy a drink and a chat as you watch the sun set through the pines. Or wander the other way towards the comfy guesthouse. With its own private living quarters,

screen porch and a wide verandah facing the view, it’s perfect for inlaws, or luxury accommodations for very special guests.

Now that you’re down by the water, stop and listen for a few minutes to the peaceful sound of water lapping against the shore. A few steps along, you’ll come to a clearing by the water that’s specially suited for swimming. At the foot of a small waterside patio with room for a couple of comfy Muskoka chairs, the lake is warm and shallow and the bottom is

smooth rock – a perfect spot for children to play safely, under the watchful eye of mum and dad.

Follow the path back along the water’s edge, and you’ll come to Tall Timbers’ classic update on over a hundred years of Muskoka history: the handsome two-slip Muskoka boathouse. On the more sheltered side is a wide dock, tailor-made for sitting and sunworshipping (and a cool, shaded dining area if you’d prefer!), with deeper water suitable for diving or landing a motorboat or float plane. On the far side, there’s a place to securely moor smaller boats such as canoes, sail-cats or Jet-skis. The upper level features still more dockside seating – you can’t beat the view from up here! – as well as a wet bar for outdoor entertaining (along with washrooms, a thoughtful addition).

Tall Timbers is all set for modernday Muskoka cottagers to enjoy the very special lifestyle it offers. The people – and perhaps the music, drifting across the water –may be different today than they were a hundred years ago, but here in the pines, the spirit is very much still there.

MUSKOKA’S FALL

A Super-Natural Spectacle

Muskoka is almost as famous for its breathtaking display of autumn colour as it is for its sparkling lakes and prowess as a vacation destination. But have you ever wondered just why Muskoka’s forests look so spectacular this time of year?

Photo: Rob Stimpson Photography
NORTH | FALL 2022 ■ 23

Muskoka is home to some of the world’s most vibrant fall colour displays – a dynamic palette of glowing golds, sunset oranges and crimson-reds, spread through the forest canopy as trees prepare for the shorter, colder days of winter. It’s little wonder that artists have attempted to capture its grandeur on canvas and film for over a century. But have you ever wondered why Muskoka is host to such a natural extravaganza of colour?

As cottagers, we know too well the shorter days of autumn: the morning chill that lingers longer with each day, or a cool breeze on an otherwise sunny afternoon. Shorter days and colder nights are noticed by more than just the human inhabitants of cottage country. They provide strong signals to the flora and fauna of the area to prepare for winter. Combined with the right assemblage of trees capable of producing a spectrum of colours, Muskoka’s lake-spotted landscape sets the stage for this super-natural display.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE DISPLAY

Tree species like sugar and red maples are the true stars of the fall colour exhibition, in part because their leaves contain a range of pigmented compounds. As the relative abundance of these elements vary throughout the year, they produce different leaf colours. Chlorophyll, the photosynthesizing compound within plant leaves, primarily reflects green light, while absorbing light along the blue and yellow-red part of the

Photo: Paul Madden Photography

spectrum. (What we see as a leaf’s colour is actually the light the leaf is predominantly reflecting, not absorbing.) Leaves also contain the compound anthocyanin, which reflects red light, and carotenoids, which reflect yellow and orange light.

In autumn, chlorophyll begins to break down, revealing the presence of these other compounds that are involved in late-season energy recovery by the tree. As fall progresses, the exact combinations of chlorophyll, anthocyanin and carotenoids vary among species and even individuals, creating a diverse spectrum of colours.

SELECTING THE PERFECT PLACE AND TIME TO SEE FALL COLOURS

Determining the best place and time to witness Muskoka’s fall colours is certainly up for debate. Nonetheless, one predictor of the expected vibrancy is the number of sunny days leading into fall. Under sunny conditions, anthocyanin and carotenoids increase in abundance within the leaves, which yields the brightest and longest-lasting displays of colour. Conversely, cloudy days and precipitation tend to result in an earlier start to the colour change, as well as an overall duller and shorter display.

To further complicate the guessing game of timing peak colour, the growing conditions, stress level, and exposure of trees can impact their timing and intensity. For example, trees that are stressed due to water, insects or disease tend to change colour sooner and faster than the rest of the forest. (This can be a great indicator for cottage owners that a problem tree may soon be on the horizon.)

MUSKOKA IS HOME TO SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST VIBRANT FALL COLOUR DISPLAYS

WHAT COLOURS TO EXPECT FROM YOUR TREES

As you look out at the colours this fall, you will notice the shades of green produced by conifers like hemlock, pine or cedar; the browns of oak leaves; the golden yellows of tamarack (the only conifer to lose its needles), poplar, birch, beech and ash; as well as the the oranges and reds of maples. Together they form a backdrop of spectacular diversity that can brighten and fade by the day.

Muskoka Tree Solutions hopes that you find time to gather with friends and family this fall to share in this colourfilled farewell to the summer season. If you are interested in learning more about crafting your property’s palette of colours, check out muskokasolutions.com, or contact us at 705-388-TREE (8733) to arrange a consultation.

8 Ways to Guarantee They Love Your Gift

Tips on becoming the best gift giver in the world at least in the opinion of those you give gifts to.

You’ve been there; we all have. It’s an awkward experience that makes one cringe to ponder; that oh-so-familiar feeling of, “I appreciate the thought, but what the heck am I going to do with this gift?”

An estimated $15.2 billion per year is spent on unwanted, often wasted gifts in North America. To help provide a solution, Carly Caines and JD Sterne, former owners of First Wood Furnishings, conducted a research survey asking 55 people to rank gift characteristics from most to least meaningful when receiving a gift.

Consult this checklist before buying your next gift. The more times you can say “Yes,” the more likely your gift will be heartfelt and meaningful – not dramatized and discarded.

NORTH | FALL 2022 ■ 27

IS THIS GIFT SOMETHING THE RECIPIENT WILL FIND USEFUL?

It’s important to consider the practicality of your gift, in addition to its thoughtfulness. “The guilt fills me as the gift eventually makes its way into my chaotic storage closet, or sometimes even the garbage.” Am I the only one that feels this way? Or do you feel this way too?

WILL THIS GIFT AVOID ADDING CLUTTER TO THE RECIPIENT’S LIFE?

That chaotic closet I mentioned? Do your best to avoid contributing to that. Whether the destination is the garage or just a junk drawer, nobody needs more clutter. Consider what they might do with it after it becomes theirs.

IS THIS GIFT PERSONALIZED?

A thoughtful, personalized gift will always stand out. I’ll never forget the feeling I had when my partner gifted me a “time turner” necklace from the Harry Potter films. Even though the series wasn’t his thing, he took the time to think about my specific interests, and researched the personalized present. (P.S. Gentlemen, if your lady is into Harry Potter, this is the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.)

IS THIS GIFT SOMETHING THAT WILL LAST FOR YEARS?

I think you’ll agree, quality over quantity wins out every time. Especially while we’re being mindful of sustainability, a gift that will last is a gift worth giving. You’ve likely felt uneasy when the sweater a relative bought you was no longer part of your wardrobe because it tore in the wash.

Consider gifting an experience, such as theatre or concert tickets; memories last a lifetime.

28 ■ NORTH | FALL 2022

IS THIS GIFT SOMETHING THE RECIPIENT WOULD NORMALLY BUY FOR THEMSELVES?

During the survey, respondents often commented that they loved receiving gifts they wouldn’t usually splurge on for themselves. A spa retreat, or a nice dinner can be huge hits. We don’t often pamper ourselves, so it’s always a treat when someone does it for us.

IS THIS GIFT UNIQUE? ARE THEY LIKELY TO HAVE RECEIVED IT BEFORE?

Aim for something unique for your recipient – something you feel confident that nobody else would have ever given them. Unique gifts make it easy to recall who bought the gift, and will certainly make them think of you when they use it.

IS THIS GIFT ONE-OF-A-KIND?

While not essential, a one-of-akind gift will leave your gifted one feeling extra special. Try out shops like Etsy, where products are often handmade, so each one is truly one-of-a-kind. Local markets, art shows, or crafting pop-ups are also excellent resources if you’re looking to support your community while giving something unique and memorable.

IS THIS GIFT HIGH QUALITY?

As mentioned earlier, quality over quantity is always better. To avoid contributing to the massive amount of gift waste, spend the extra few dollars on something that will last. Even if it’s a high-quality jacket for your friend that may eventually go out of style, perhaps one day your friend’s daughter will start to wear it when she goes through her “vintage” phase.

Try out shops like Etsy, where products are often handmade, so each one is truly one-of-a-kind.

ONE SPORT TO MULTI-SPORT:

How Sport Court Ontario is Changing Life at the Cottage

32 ■ NORTH | FALL 2022

Back in the day, both cottagers and folks with the property space would occasionally treat themselves to a tennis court – a real sign of success and class. But, inevitably, those courts would suffer the wear and tear of the Canadian climate or just go unused, as cottagers and their kids’ interests shifted to other recreations. But, when properly installed and maintained, a Sport Court can add spiritual and financial benefits to your property.

That’s all we do at Sport Court Ontario. We’re not occasional bathroom contractors, cottage road builders, driveway pavers, or dock installers. We do one thing, and we do it better than anyone: Sport Courts. For over two decades, we have dedicated ourselves to becoming the best provider of Sport Courts in Ontario. We offer our services both residentially and commercially. If you’ve played a match of tennis, a game of horse, or some ball hockey on a cottage or commercial court in Ontario, chances are you’ve been on a Sport Court. From Muskoka to Mississauga, the cottage or community centre, we’re on the ball all over the province to modernize and professionalize courts.

Take our recent clients, the Fullertons. When we first came upon them, my first question to them was, why did they want (or need) to refurbish their existing court? “The court had cracks in it from what we believe was caused by moisture. This was the second time that it happened, so we had fixed it once already,” they explained, a common occurrence with asphalt-based courts. We recommended a resurfacing and refurbishing from Sport Court Ontario, part of an international network of Sport Court subsidiaries and the only Sport Court experts in Ontario.

For over 20 years, my family and I have made Sport Court our life, our passion, and our commitment to our community.
BEFORE AFTER NORTH | FALL 2022 ■ 33

The size can vary to fit properties or landscapes; we offer 16 colours to choose from, custom playing lines, and a wide array of functionality (tennis nets, basketball nets, hockey boards, and of course, the latest rage: pickleball). We want you to be able to enjoy your court for any sport, not just tennis. Our courts are perfect for basketball, volleyball, badminton, inline skating, shuffleboard, lacrosse, soccer, and hockey – on the ice during the winter, and ball hockey in summer. We also install all the accessories, from lighting to ball containment fencing, and even refrigeration for rink conversion, which can maximize the usage of each project. Oh, and are you a Leafs fan? A Raptors fan? Are you “the North”? We can customize every court to match your fandom.

These aren’t the cracked asphalt courts besieged by weeds at your grandparents' place in the ’70s. These are modern surfaces built with state-ofthe-art materials, offering lateral forgiveness and shock absorption, which helps to prevent injuries and sore joints. They’re beautiful installations that fit each unique property, increasing value and saleability. And the best part: The installation only takes a few days! But you shouldn’t wait until the busy season; plan ahead to guarantee you can have your court installed for next summer, as we’re already booking into the spring.

The pandemic has changed how we use our properties, and we’ve seen a huge rise in demand. Families are looking to increase what their properties can offer, and entertain a younger generation of cottagers. A functional, multi-purpose, beautiful new court increases the way we can use our properties and enjoy the company of multiple generations. The installs come with a 15-year warranty from the industry leader in athletic performance surfaces.

When we redo or install a court, we build to the specifications and needs of each individual client.

34 ■ NORTH | FALL 2022

So how did the Fullertons feel about their resurfacing and refurbishing done by Sport Court Ontario? “They did an amazing job and did it quickly. The cost of putting in the Sport Court was actually cheaper than repairing the old tennis court. My children and grandchildren aren’t big tennis players but love basketball, hockey, and pickleball. Everyone in our family loves the new Sport Court!”

If you had told me 30 years ago I’d make my life in courts, I’d never have believed you. But here we are, twenty-plus years in, and I couldn’t be happier to provide opportunities for joy, exercise, and togetherness all over Ontario. I like to

think that our courts do a small part in bringing families together, in enriching their lives, and maybe even provide the surface for the spark that will foster a life-long love of tennis, or basketball, or hockey, or whatever activity our Sport Courts are used for.

Life is short. Get on the court! Contact our team to discuss your project 416-788-1798 or scan to learn more: For over 2 decades, we have dedicated ourselves to becoming the best provider of Sport Courts in Ontario. NORTH | FALL 2022 ■ 35

Driftwood has its own updated Muskoka room, with a sheltered upper deck warmed by a granite-faced, wood-burning fireplace. On the lower level you will find a generous-sized games room and an inviting and comfortable family room.

Each bedroom features its own unique view. And if five bedrooms isn’t enough to house all your guests during the fall months, the classic Muskoka boathouse has room for more. Driftwood is situated halfway between Port Carling – where you will find a lovely selection of restaurants year-round – and Rosseau, where you can have an experience of a lifetime any time of year by dining at the Crossroads Restaurant.

ALWAYS MAKE TIME FOR LAKE TIME

FROM EMERGENCY CARE TO CANCER TO HEART DISEASE:

Ore-defined. Alongside the technological advances we witness every day, our present technology is, simultaneously, slowly deteriorating. Why, then, can we upgrade our daily devices en mass, when life-saving medical equipment remains technologically stagnant for nearly two decades? Think about it: if you were to walk in to the office tomorrow, and each computer had been

important documents, securely store files, and communicate coherently with colleagues would prove challenging under the best of circumstances. That’s not even taking into account the extra time wasted awaiting the ever-so familiar Microsoft ding that occurs when, after what feels like a century, the computer finally finishes starting up. I don’t miss those early 2000s cube computer days.

We at West Parry Sound Health Centre rely solely (90%) on philanthropic, generous donors to keep our hospital reliable, efficient, and as up-to-date as possible. In certain scenarios, mere minutes of diagnostic assessment can determine whether a patient lives or dies. And when we’re working with technology that is seventeen years old, the minutes can add up, risking sometimes fatal impacts. As such, it is imperative to ensure the Parry Sound community is protected, by upgrading our equipment at West Parry Sound Health Centre as soon as possible: ideally, by 2023.

And it all starts with you. You don’t need to be a medical professional. You have the power to save lives.

Contributing funds to West Parry Sound Health Centre’s urgent need for upgraded diagnostic equipment is truly a noble pursuit. After all of the challenges medical workers have faced over the last few years, outdated equipment should not be something that should be holding us back from helping our community to the absolute best of our ability. It’s an imperative factor that directly contributes to our ability to diagnose and assess health ailments quickly and accurately.

Incredibly, the provincial government’s funding does not cover the costs of medical equipment upgrades.

This helps toward preventing tumour progression, cancers, heart disease, and ultimately keeping the Parry Sound community safer, healthier, and thriving.

I am beyond grateful to be working as the Manager of Laboratory Services and Medical Imaging here in Parry Sound. We may be a smaller town, but we’re certainly a mighty one as well. Enriched with performing arts, heritage sites, stunning trails, and excitable weather patterns, our community has proven to be resilient, compassionate, and truly one-of-a-kind. As such, we here in Parry Sound are facing population growth more rapidly than usual. Since the pandemic, an abundance of people from larger cities like Toronto have been embracing smaller town culture. We welcome everyone in our expanding community; it’s the best place to live, work, and play. However, this population increase has put higher demands on the hospital and its amenities. While we hope our newcomers embrace the philanthropic nature of

the Parry Sound community, we could use the help from Ontarians far and wide to aid in our mission: to provide the best possible healthcare to our residents and visitors alike.

Due to the pressure on West Parry Sound Health Centre’s aging diagnostic equipment, as well as our growing community, we need your help now more than ever. At the hospital, we strive to ensure the quickest results possible between testing and diagnosis. As we’ve all become well aware of during the recent pandemic, speed and precision are the keys to making effective treatment decisions. There’s nothing more traumatic than to have yourself or your loved one receive a life-threatening diagnosis. Something I find is always reassuring is being able to provide our patients with the most accurate results, giving our physicians the opportunity to share the best case scenario: “We’ve caught this early.” Proper diagnostic equipment will make saying that phrase a significantly more frequent part of the

job for my team and our medical team. Additionally, our aim is providing patient relief in their most difficult hours. If you or someone you love were suffering, you would want to know that you were receiving the best care possible with the latest technology.

A healthier community is a happier community. After the last few years and their strain on the healthcare system, your medical workers could use a fresh start. Help us help you, your neighbours, your friends, your fellow Ontarians. I love nothing more than watching our town rally together to fund each other’s healthcare where the government will not. It’s genuinely inspiring to witness, but it’s still not quite enough. By financially contributing to our journey of updating our diagnostic technology, you’re directly helping to save lives. You’re helping

a grandmother stay strong enough to nurture a relationship with her newest grandson, or a father recover quickly enough to give his daughter away at her wedding. You’re helping a teenager receive the life-changing treatment that will allow her to attend her high school prom, when she never thought that would have been possible. You’re bettering Ontario, and helping healthcare workers help others.

Whether you’re a former patient who wants to ensure others are well taken care of too, a kind-hearted activist who wants to better their community, or you have a birthday you’d like to collect donations for, we need your help. No donation is too small. With our goal of upgrading our equipment by the end of the year, a donation to West Parry Sound Health Centre also makes for a generous holiday season gift of goodwill. I want to thank the charitable philanthropists of Ontario who have already contributed to our cause. It’s an honour to work in this field, but it’s even more of an honour to serve this community.

A healthier community is a happier community.

Create with confidence

The Cutter’s Edge design team gives

clients the confidence to create beautiful homes that reflect their style. With a custom millwork shop at their disposal, the team can design one-of-a-kind furniture and cabinetry to fit any room. This ability, unique to The Cutter’s Edge, results in spaces that stand the test of time and are flexible enough to be styled in fresh new ways as seasons and fashions change.

Each project starts with a meeting with the client to best understand the vision for their home, room or piece of furniture. As the design process continues, their team establishes a collaborative working relationship ensuring the homeowner loves every aspect of the final result.

When working on the Timber Dream project (pictured on the first page and below), the clients required a complete lake house interior design plan that perfectly balanced modern comforts, relaxed Muskoka style, and old-world charm. Every detail, from the furniture to the paint, was carefully selected to reflect the homeowner’s design style and extended family requirements.

“Design is not just about how it looks but more importantly how it makes you feel.” Lindsay Cowan, designer
Pictured from left: Nadine, Lindsay, Jackie and Robin (seated)

Imagining how your space might look with a new furniture suite is a challenge many homeowners face when redecorating a room or, even worse, starting from scratch.

The Cutter’s Edge takes a lot of the guesswork out of these crucial decisions by setting up vignettes of living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms in their 26,000 square feet of showroom space divided between their Huntsville and Nipissing locations. As you turn each corner, you will see their furniture styled as it will look in your home.

The knowledgeable design staff at both showrooms are there to help you sort through fabric swatches and stain colours and help you make all the design decisions that will make your new purchase your own.

“Layering textures and pattern adds a luxurious, warm feel to any space and is my favourite part of a project.” Jackie Wilson, designer

Kitchen designer Nadine Michel brings a fresh eye and dynamic energy that propels projects throughout the design process. The custom design for a Cutter’s Edge client (pictured) is a stunning example of her ability to create inspiring and truly one-of-a-kind kitchens.

Warm wood tones, gold accents and tailored pendants add a glamorous flair to this contemporary space. The contrast provided by the rich charcoal cabinetry makes the design pop, while the mirrored bar and white backsplash keep the space bright and light.

Aalto Dining Table

“The planning process should be fun! It is a joy to learn a client’s style and create a space that is tailored to them.” Nadine Michel, designer

Since the beginning of Covid, the Muskoka market has witnessed a massive influx of new buyers; the market has been so hot that anything associated with the waterfront has been considered a good investment. But what happens when Covid becomes a distant memory? Does the mosquito-infested swamp at the end of a 10km seasonal road still sound like a good investment?

As these shifts begin, we will all be quickly reminded of the fundamentals in real estate. You know the old saying – the cliché that everyone knows, but some have forgotten about during the Covid era: Location, Location, Location.

I spent an entire day at a cottage for sale in Port Sandfield on Lake Joseph. I explored the area and all its unique amenities. Here’s a taste of what life looks like, living in perfectly located Port Sandfield.

My day starts by grabbing my gym bag and heading down to the dock. I’m going to take the paddleboard and go over to the Lake Joe club for a workout. The convenience of this property is that it’s located right across the lake from the Club, and only takes a few minutes to paddle over. When I leave early, I can take a direct route straight from the cottage dock to the dock at the Water’s Edge Wine Bar and Grill, where it’s a short jaunt to the Shock Fitness gym!

This outdoor gym is for those who love experiencing fitness in the beauty of cottage country. The gym features great personal trainers, as well as massage therapy; the staff is always super supportive and the whole place has a friendly vibe. And there’s great scenery, with multiple views of Lake Joe to enjoy while you are working out. As a world-class destination, the Lake Joseph Club also has all of the other essential activities like tennis, golf, kids’ programs, and dining at the Water’s Edge Wine Bar and club house. All of this is only a paddleboard away.

This pristine cottage in Port Sandfield features
700 feet of prime Lake Joe waterfront, and minutes to every kind of amenity an active lifestyle demands. Could you fit it all in one day?
NORTH | FALL 2022 ■ 69

After a great workout and a brief paddle back to the dock, I cool off and freshen up with a quick swim in the clearest water in all of Muskoka, followed up by spending a little time soaking up the sun on the large dock. This property has the most amazing private beach, with 700 feet of beautiful hard-packed sand and a dock that would rival a small resort.

It’s only noon and I’ve already been paddleboarding, had an amazing workout and a leisurely swim on a gorgeous private beach; now it’s time to refuel with some local eats. Although this cottage has a charming eat-in kitchen for cooking all of your favourite meals, I decide to go for a short walk, just over the scenic bridge, and hit up Silverstream Farms for one of their famous summertime sandwiches.

Visiting Silverstream Farms is a summertime tradition in this area. Whether you are just boating through Port Sandfield and want to grab one of their famous deli sandwiches, homemade blueberry donuts or you already cottage in the area, it’s nice to be able to take advantage of this super convenient micro grocery store. Grab ice cream with the kids, fresh produce or get fresh goodies like the Muskoka blueberry donut straight from the oven (mentioned again, because it’s that good)!

After lunch, I walk around to check out some of the local boutiques in the area. Port Sandfield is such a small village that if you’re driving through and happen to blink, you might miss these little gems. I personally recommend visiting the retail shop in the Port Sandfield marina. They have some beautiful boats on display right inside the retail shop, and you can even see fish in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Joe, as you explore their great inventory and pick up some summer essentials.

With entertaining a big part of cottage life, it’s rare to find a property that offers privacy, great views, space to entertain, and that is still close to town if you forget something. With guests arriving for the weekend, I head into Port Carling’s LCBO, an enjoyable fiveminute drive, along a smooth asphalt road to stock up. You just can’t beat the convenience. There’s even an EMS (paramedic) station and a fire station just minutes away from this incredible Peninsula Road address. This is definitely not one of those inconvenient cottage locations where you’re afraid to forget something. You can make it to the hardware store, clothing shops, the pharmacy, post office and great restaurants, all within a very short drive to the trendy and growing town of Port Carling.

70 ■ NORTH | FALL 2022

By the time I get back from Port Carling, the weather conditions are pretty much perfect for a little tour on the Seadoo. I decide to get out on the water and head north on Lake Joe to do a little sightseeing. Less than ten minutes later, I find myself surrounded by a cluster of islands that look so pristine and perfect that I decide to stop and put on my diving mask to take a look at what lies beneath these crystal-clear waters. Taking a different route home, I cut through the Joe River into Lake Rosseau, before landing right back at the dock on Lake Joe. It’s amazing to have two premier lakes to choose from, only seconds after leaving the dock.

Now back at the cottage with enough time before my guests arrive (mostly by boat), I warm up in the hot tub, which is perched brilliantly at the edge of Lake Joe, and enjoy the gorgeous view. I spend the rest of the evening chilling on the dock with friends and family and watch the sunset before heading up to the main cottage for a proper summer barbecue feast.

That’s what I consider a day well spent cottaging in Muskoka. Combine this with 700 feet of beautiful beach, sandy shoreline and big boat access via the three-slip dock, the local conveniences of Port Sandfield and Port Carling, and you’ve got the perfect property to experience the best of what Muskoka offers.

Most

brokerages advise you to put your property into the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system, in order to get it in front of the greatest number of prospective buyers possible. But when it comes to Muskoka property – especially in the current market – that may not be the best, or even most desirable, route for you.

Cayman Marshall has a better way to market your property, which not only ensures that only serious, wellqualified buyers view your property, but allows you to maintain your privacy and avoid the stress and hustle of listing with MLS.

With a Cayman Marshall exclusive listing, your property will only be visible to members of our proprietary database. Personal viewing appointments are only scheduled after our agents have taken prospective buyers through a careful pre-screening process.

Our system works equally well for buyers. Rather than enduring the “feeding frenzy,” panic-bidding and sometimes, disappointment that accompanies desirable MLS properties, you have the assurance of knowing the property is only being seen by serious, well-qualified prospects like you, and managed exclusively through Cayman Marshall’s offices.

The success of our system speaks for itself: since last August, we’ve sold well over $133 million in exclusive sales alone. Allow us to show you the better way to sell your Muskoka property!

GREAT ROOMS

or many cottagers, their favourite room in the house is the great room. Looking out those big windows at the sun glinting off the water, hanging out with the family in the evening, or just stretching out for an afternoon nap – it’s the place we all tend to gravitate to. Tary Roossien and Meredith Parsons, principals with Cassis Design Studio, offer the following advice for making your great room not just great, but cozy too.

WHERE DO I START?

Most great rooms or large living areas have room for more than one function, so start by asking yourself what you want the room to include. A comfy space for everyone to relax by the fire? A place for playing Monopoly for hours? A quiet reading nook? Do you have existing furnishings or favourite pieces that you want to put in the space?

THE PERFECT BACKDROP

The colour of the walls is very important for establishing mood – generally speaking, a neutral setting makes the perfect backdrop for favourite colours or textures. (Relying on accessories like pillows, throws and décor pieces to layer in texture and colour makes it easier to change with the seasons or when you want to update your space.) Tary’s go-to favourite shades for walls include Chantilly Lace, a pure crisp warm white; Balboa Mist, with its misty undertone of grey; and Collingwood, a timeless, warm greige (all shades by Benjamin Moore).

Accent walls add personality and are a great way to define a smaller focal area or to create

design interest. Consider Naval, a muted navy; Urbane Bronze, a rich chocolate, Mossy Oak, a delicious creamy sage (both Sherwin Williams); or Wrought Iron, a complex off-black (Benjamin Moore).

IT’S ALL IN THE PLANNING

It’s good practice to sketch a plan on paper to help establish the flow of your space, positioning the various centres you would like to create. Measure the dimensions of your room and the placement of windows, doors and any other special features. Measure any existing furniture you have as well.

Establish the room’s main focal point – this is its foundational, or anchor, space. For most great rooms, this will be the fireplace, but it could also be a great view or even the TV (or a combination).

BUILD YOUR FOUNDATION

Define the boundaries of the anchor space by adding a large, plush rug. This adds a sense of human scale, and helps organize the room logically and visually.

NEXT, PLAN OUT YOUR SEATING.

These foundational pieces are the most important ones in the room, so they tend to be the most substantial. Sectionals are a great choice, simply because they are so versatile and can be customized to fit the configurations of your seating area.

Another option is to place two matching sofas facing each other, either perpendicular to the fireplace or in an ell-shape, or a sofa facing two chairs.

Depending on the size of your sofa(s), balance the arrangement with the addition of one or two armchairs; if you use just one, opt for an oversize version. Swivel chairs are a really useful option, especially in a large, open room, as they have the ability to swivel and address any area of the room. Finish with a coffee table, side or end tables, and perhaps an ottoman or one or more poufs, for putting your feet up or extra seating.

SUPPLEMENTARY SPACES

Once you’ve set up your anchor seating, chances are you’ll have a lot of extra room around the sides. This is where you will add smaller-scale, multi-function spaces to make your great room even more inviting!

Find a corner outside the large seating space – one that entices you to come sit down and chill out for a minute, have a coffee, read a book or get caught up in the latest gossip rags. Think of it as a mini-version of the large seating group: two chairs, end table, floor or table lamp, pillows, poufs and/or a soft throw. Often this becomes the most favourite hangout of all.

Another popular supplemental space is a games table: four chairs arranged around a square table, perfect for a puzzle or a game of cards.

LIGHTING

Lighting is incredibly important in any room, but especially in a great room. Keep in mind that most great rooms, with their big windows, will be very bright during the day, but need a lot of lighting at night.

A big chandelier is an effective way to add a statement to your entire great room and further define your foundation seating area, but it’s usually not enough on its own. Add intimacy with table lamps (ambient lighting), whether to illuminate small seating areas, or to add extra lighting in your main seating area. Finally, use task lighting to light specific areas. A floor lamp is an effective way to illuminate book pages for a reader; sconces can add supplemental lighting along the walls.

FINISHING TOUCHES

It’s the final touches that give your spaces personality and make a room your own. Fill the room with coziness, layering pillows and throws throughout the spaces, especially in soft materials like alpaca, faux fur, lambswool and cashmere wool blend.

Large-scale artwork adds instant character and interest to a room; no room should be without it.

Layering in natural elements, wood pieces in various finishes, greenery (real or faux), pottery clay vases or stone elements work to neutralize, calm and warm any design.

104 ■ NORTH | FALL 2022

Note how texture and natural materials add warmth and coziness to this room.

A rustic-style console table placed on a wall behind the sofa provides a surface for supplemental lighting and fills an empty space without crowding. Above it, a large framed map used as artwork adds visual presence to the grouping.

Even a boathouse can have a mini-great room! In this example, the view is the focal point, so the main seating area orients towards it. A dining table grouping and small desk and chair form separate centres to break up the space. Coordinated pillows and throws, along with lots of natural textures, add coziness to the room.

NORTH | FALL 2022 ■ 105

In this multi-function, open concept space, rugs help to define different centres. It’s a perfect example of how useful a swivel chair can be in a large room: this one (foreground) can be turned towards the fire for a quiet read, turned to the right to join in a conversation with folks sitting on the sectional, or faced forward to catch up on TV.

It doesn’t take a lot of elements to make a cozy, polished-feeling centre. Here, a comfy chair (upholstered in a nubbly bouclé fabric), pillow, and side table are all you need for a perch where you can warm your toes by the fire, catch up on your reading or simply relax and drink in the view.

DESIGN TIPS

FOR CREATING GREAT ROOMS

1 | RUGS

The use of rugs is the easiest and most effective way to define space while creating a warm welcoming feeling. Large rugs work best in large spaces.

Tip: In most cases, your rug shows best when it extends 12-18 inches beyond the front legs of your furnishings.

2 | SCALE MATTERS

In large rooms, fewer larger pieces are almost always preferable to a lot of smaller pieces. Opt for pieces that are oversized in length, with fewer but larger seat and back cushions.

Tip: Depending on your sofa size, layer two 22- to 24-inch back pillows; a second layer of two 18- to 20-inch pillows in a contrasting fabric; then top with two lumbar pillows, 16- to 18 by 20 inches.

3 | MAINTAIN A FLOW

For comfort and to make navigating around the room easier, leave plenty of room to maintain smooth traffic flow between and through each furniture grouping.

Tip: For the most efficient traffic flow between centres, leave a minimum of 18-24 inches, ideally 30-36 inches.

4 | THE PERFECT BALANCE

When too many visually heavy things are on one side of the room, the entire space looks unbalanced; try to keep both sides fairly evenly matched.

Tip: Sofas tend to take up quite a bit of visual space; balance them with two upholstered club or swivel chairs, or even another sofa.

5 | DEFINE ZONES WITH A SOFA TABLE

Another option for creating multiple seating areas is to section off a large living space with a floating sofa or sectional in the middle of the room, and place a sofa table behind it.

Tip: Your sofa table should be at least half the length of your sofa, and should be lower than the sofa back pillows.

6 | THE FINE ART OF ARTWORK

Large pieces work best in a large space; a collage of smaller pieces grouped together to fill one space also works very well – try a collection of mirrors, photos or an eclectic group of complementary art pieces.

Tip: Consider adding a console, games table or desk against the wall under artwork; it’s a great way to dress up an empty wall space.
