Important Dates RESIDENTS:

TRANSFERS: There is no charge to transfer your child between camps and swim lessons provided there is space available.

Mail-in, Fax-in & Dropoff March 24, 2015

NO REFUNDS OR CREDITS WILL BE ISSUED AFTER THE CAMP BEGINS. However, your satisfaction matters most to us and refunds or credits will be considered. Participants who are dissatisfied with a program for any reason must fill out a program evaluation prior to receiving a refund or credit so we can make the class better in the future. Credits and refunds will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the program supervisor.

CAMP & SWIM LESSONS REGISTRATION

Pre-registration is required for all Camps & Swim Lessons! • In-camp registrations will not be accepted. • Register early! Many camps fill before their start dates. • Camps may be cancelled if there is low enrollment. • All registrations are taken on a first come first serve basis. • Mail In & Fax In receipts will be mailed. We will not call you to confirm your registration.

WAITING LISTS

Waiting lists will be established if a program is full. If a space becomes available we will contact you. You will not be charged for the camp unless you are enrolled. If you wrote a check for several classes and you are put on the wait list, the remaining balance of your check will be automatically credited to your account for future use in our programs. If you would like a refund, please contact the contact the department at 650.780.7311.

RESIDENT STATUS

Any person with a home Redwood City mailing address is considered a resident. A Redwood City P.O. Box or business address will not be taken as proof of residency. A non-resident is someone who lives in another city.

CANCELLATIONS BY DEPARTMENT: If a camp or swim lesson is cancelled by the department, a full refund will be issued.

Refund Policy

CANCELLATIONS: Up until 2 weeks before the start date of each camp or swim lesson, you may cancel and receive a refund less $15 per swim lesson and $25 per camp. Cancellations made within the two week window will receive a department credit (less $15 per swim lesson and $25 per camp) which may be applied to any future Recreation Department activity.

Early Bird Discount THE MORE YOU BUY, THE MORE YOU SAVE!

Just look for the pink starburst next to the applicable camps in the Summer Camp Section. *Discounted camps include: Polliwog, Tiny Timbers, Mountaineers, Kaboom, High-5, Summer Adventures and Whatchamacallit. Refunds on camps will be for the actual value paid, less processing fees. There will be no discounts given on bridge care or post care programs associated with the selected camps. Discount is on the base price of the camp prior to the addition of administrative and nonresident fees.

Financial Assistance How to Read Our Camp Listings Payment plans are available to families who need a little extra time to pay in full. All summer camps and swim lessons listed in this guide are eligible for deferred payment. This will allow families to reserve their child’s spot NOW, but apply payment closer to the camp and/ or swim lesson start date. STRICT RULES APPLY.

PAYMENT PLAN RULES All summer camps and swim lessons within the guide are eligible. A non-refundable registration deposit of $25 PER CAMP/SWIM LESSON is required. This will allow you to reserve your child’s spot in a camp now, but defer payment until later. After Care

Some of our camps include the option for After Care. If you see the clock icon next to the camp description, there is after care available. After care options are listed with the associated camp’s description, as well as on PAGE 43.

Bridge Care

Some of our camps include the option for Bridge Care. Bridge care gives the opportunity for parents to piece together an AM and PM camp of their choice with Lunch Supervision from 12-1pm by our Staff. Children will be walked from their morning camp option to the Community Activities Building where they will eat lunch and play from 12-1pm. Children will then be walked to their afternoon camp choice by our staff. ONLY CAMPS WITH THE DESIGNATED BRIDGE NEXT THEM WILL QUALIFY FOR CARE. After Care

Camps with a clock icon next to them qualify for After Care. Our trustworthy staff will pick up campers from their PM camp and walk them to the Community Activities Building. Parents, please pick up your campers by 6:00pm. Please note, some of our camp providers provide their own after care. Those camps will have the post care listed with the camp description. Pair up an AM & PM Camp of your Choice, and We’ll Take Care of the Rest! Bridge Care is a way for you to customize a camp experience that fits your schedule and your child’s interests. Bridge Care gives the opportunity for parents to add an additional lunch hour to their half day camp OR piece together an AM and PM camp of their choice. Children will be walked from their morning camp option to the Community Activities Building where they will eat lunch and play from 12-1pm. Children will then be walked to their afternoon camp option by our staff. CAMPER SKATE SESSION! CAMP KABOOM ONLY

Classes taught by Society Skate Staff High five for already signing up for one of our summer camps! We’re now offering one hour skateboarding sessions with the awesome Society staff DURING camp hours! We’ll walk you over to our Mobile Skate Park, provide a skateboard and helmet and you’ll be ready to ride! Whether you’re just starting off with the basics or perfecting your kickflips and carve transitions, our skate session will keep you stoked about skateboarding this summer! Age 3-4yrs Campers will explore their imaginations each day with lots of fun-filled activities that center on each week’s theme. Activities may include games, story time, crafts, experiments, special guests, music, outdoor play and playground opportunities. Age 11-17 with The Leyla Beban Young Authors Foundation Is creative writing your passion? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our passion, too! The Leyla Beban Young Authors Foundation runs the $1,000 for 1,000 Words contest and publishes the winning works of middle and high school students for our journal, Bluefire. In this camp you will use prompts, exercises, and sample stories from Bluefire to create your own piece of 1000-word creative fiction. Class fee can be waived for qualified students.

Taught by professional firefighters, participants learn skills including: First Aid, CPR, exit drills, fire extinguisher use, disaster preparedness, and home safety. In addition to the practical skills they can use everyday, participants learn what its like to be a firefighter by extinguishing fire with fire hoses, proper lifting techniques for moving ladders and hose, hose management, and they even get to climb the 100 foot tall ladder! All activities are optional, but positive, encouraging attitudes are not. This is a great opportunity to explore a day in the life of a firefighter! Bring a bag lunch Monday-Thursday. Have a ton of fun as we whip up potions and experiment with all kinds of chemical reactions, including growing our own crystals, making sidewalk chalk, and learning the science of chromatography on a Mad Science Lab Coat we get to keep!! Mix it up as we experiment with molecular madness, radical reactions and “fizz”ical and chemical reactions. Discover what those crazy chemists are really up to in their laboratories! Then use everything you’ve learned to solve the Mad Science Mystery; even Sherlock couldn’t figure this one out!

Ages 5-12 Mad Science and NASA have teamed up to bring you the excitement and wonder of space in this new voyage of discovery. See the principles of thrust and propulsion at work as we explore the atmosphere on earth and beyond! Watch star dust burn, and journey through a galaxy as you investigate the life cycle of stars. Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse in this “mad” planetary tour. Age 5-12 A.B.A.T.T. instructors are trained in coaching youth sports and have rich baseball credentials. Instructors include young volunteers, high-school players, Division 1 college players, and even professional level baseball players.

with Coach Buck and Staff. Coach Buck is the woman’s Varsity Coach at Woodside Priory School Peninsula Basketball Club is hosting a full week of basketball Skill development training for beginning, intermediate, advanced and elite student athletes. The camp will focus on ball handling, shooting, defensive principals, understanding angles, footwork, on court strength and conditioning and competitive game play including 1 on 1, 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 games. Student athletes that attend this camp will get a high level of instruction, and gain knowledge from some of the top trainers and coaches along the Peninsula. At the end of the camp, student athletes should: have developed a higher basketball IQ, understand how to play the game the correct way, developed a growth mindset and developed positive relationships with their peers. Soccer Camps KIDZ LOVE SOCCER CAMPS (Age 4½-10) Spend a week enjoying the world’s most popular sport in a fun, recreational environment. Learn and practice soccer skills including: dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting and defense. Everyone is a winner as the week’s fun culminates in an ageappropriate “World Cup” tournament. All day campers will stay for lunch and more soccer fun in the afternoon. Each day we will reinforce the skills we learned by ending the day with a full soccer match. INDOOR FUTSAL CAMP

Age 7-14 with Soccer & Smiles Follow in the footsteps of Pele, Messi and Ronaldo! All of these players credit their superior soccer skills to Futsal! This camp will be a fun introduction to Futsal for players of all levels. Campers will be grouped according to their age and skill. We will dedicate the morning session to working on basic ball skills, individual skills, and Futsal concepts, and in the afternoon we’ll focus on teamwork and game situations- culminating in a full size game. Game situations are created that will improve skills, confidence and encourage teamwork all while having a ton of fun! Our coaches are well trained, licensed and will provide a camp that is fun and challenging at every level of play. To ensure proper training the coach to player ratio is 1: 10 or less. Why are there no Sports Camps on Red Morton Park Fields? As we put together our Summer Camp Guide, we anticipated that the replacement of the synthetic turf fields at Red Morton, with brand new turf, will be taking place from approximately mid-June through early September. We apologize that we had to place camps at other City facilities other than Red Morton Park. We are incredibly thankful for our strong partnership with the Redwood Ciity School District, as most of our programs will move to local school fields. Have a great Summer!

Multi-Sport Camps SKYHAWKS MULTI-SPORT

Age 7-12 with BIAC staff This camp will explore the inner harbor of Redwood City, while learning the basics of water safety, kayaking, outrigger paddling, and stand up paddling. Each day participants and their instructors will paddle to a different destination around the Harbor learning about the conservation and ecology of Redwood City, while having fun paddling. On Friday, campers will enjoy Kayak and Standup Paddle Board Relay Races, and a potluck barbecue at the BIAC. Price includes Camp T-shirt, goodies and a certificate with group photo. LIFEGUARDS & SWIM INSTRUCTORS

JUNIOR GOLF CAMP

Age 5-14yrs with Emerald Hills Golf Staff Camp starts at 9:00 but you can drop off as early as 8:45! Orientation will be on Monday at 9:00am, and this is an opportunity for us to get to know the campers and for the campers to learn camp rules and expectations and meet their counselors. Throughout the camp they will be taught the skills of putting, chipping, bunker shots, driving and midrange game. We will take them into our driving range where they will be able to fine tune their swings. We believe the best way for young golfers to learn is by allowing them to play on a real golf course, as opposed to just a driving range. At the same time we can also teach them golf etiquette which is very important to use on a golf course. Hot Lunch is served daily for all campers and snacks will be provided at aftercare. Bring your own equipment or rent clubs at Emerald Hills Golf Course. Age 5-9 For more information, please visit www.skyhawks.com Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes by teaching proper technique to refine essential skills of the game. Golf is a challenging and lifelong sport, so young athletes need proper focus on the fundamentals of form, swinging, putting, and body positioning. To assist in this training, Skyhawks has adopted the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) system as its curriculum. SNAG utilizes a set of equipment designed for beginning golfers, including oversized plastic club heads and “mini tennis balls” to help build confidence and to have fun. Developed by PGA professionals, SNAG is specifically designed for the entry-level player; SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can make an easy and effective transition onto the golf course. No need to bring your own clubs--all equipment is provided. Please apply sunscreen prior to arrival at camp. Also, please send snacks and adequate supplies of water. Only adults on approved check-out list will be permitted to pick up camper at the end of the day.

Entering 7th-11th grades Calling all adventure seekers! If you’re looking for a fast-paced, engaging, trip-based camp you’ve come to the right place! Our Summer Teen Adventure camp provides week after week of exciting trips and activities that will engage even the most seasoned day-camper. Each week, campers will visit new places and seek new ways to challenge themselves with trips and activities designed especially for the ‘tween’ and beyond. Summer Adventure Weeks are geared toward teens that have completed the 6th through the 10th grade. Each trip will begin and end at the Red Morton Community Center. Most trips will depart at 10:00am and return by 4:00pm. Extended Care is available through the Red Morton Teen Center for an additional fee.

Leadership in Training (L.I.T.)

A certificate of completion will be given to all participants at L.I.T. Appreciation Event. The Leadership in Training program will be broken up into four two week sessions, each at $75 per session. Applications must be picked up at the Red Morton Community Center, located at 1120 Roosevelt Avenue or the Sandpiper Community Center located at 797 Redwood Shores Parkway after April 1, 2015. Applications are due by 5:00pm, April 17, 2015 and interviews will be held from May 11th though May 22nd. This is a competitive process. All applicants must provide a written application and the most qualified will be asked to interview for the available positions. A mandatory training will be held 6/15-6/19. Applicants must have prior swim experience and have an interest in working with young children. Throughout the summer you will… • Participate in Team Building and Personal Skills Training • Work with the Redwood City Lifeguard team • Assist with Swim Lessons along side a Certified Lifeguard • Gain valuable Lifeguard Experience • Learn about rescue equipment, techniques, and water safety • Assist in Pool Maintenance & Facility Cleaning • Have a lot of Fun!
