It’s been a pretty wild winter for weather! Only having one really bad cold snap has been a treat so far. I won’t say that calving has been a treat but it has without a doubt been a lot easier at the temperatures we have been having the last half of January and the start of February.

Bull sale season is here once again already and you will find several sales and places that sell privately advertised in this issue. The charolais advantage is alive and well. We consistently see it across all weights of cattle that the Char cross calves gather a premium. Right now those extra pounds Charolais calves provide and the premium they bring they are worth more than they ever have been. The World Charolais Congress Tour is making several stops in Manitoba this summer. Please feel free to check out any of the stops and for breeders that want to display at any of the stops reach out to the fellow breeders that are hosting. The Manitoba Charolais AGM will be hosted this year in Roblin. We will be doing a round of golf in the afternoon Texas scramble style with supper and the meeting to follow at mine and Candace’s yard north of town.

Hello everyone, After hearing a tremendous amount of positive feedback, the MJCA will continue with the Bull Sale Fundraising initiative for the next conference quadrennial. There many unique items offered in the past four years, which allowed for purchase/bidding by anyone, not just a niche group. Letters have been sent to all Manitoba Breeders, who consign to a Manitoba bull sale, informing them of this decision. We have also sent a copy of the cumulative sponsorship policy which outlines the donation guidelines. This policy enables the donor(s) of an item(s) to receive sponsorship recognition, in kind, for the value in which the item(s) sell(s). The total of all individual breeder donations will be added together, prior to the next Manitoba hosted conference, to equal that breeders’ cumulative sponsorship amount. Should anyone have questions, we encourage you to reach out to one of our board members. This will be the only MJCA sanctioned fundraiser this spring. There will be many MJCA members exhibiting at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, March 29 and 30 in Brandon. If you are in the area and have a chance, please pop by and check out the Charolais females on display.

COMMERCIAL BREEDER of the year Here at Munro Farms, Eric and Lavonne along with their son Darryl, his wife Terri and their 3 children Brad (14), Kyla (7) and Boyd (5) run a family farm, hiring help as needed. We run a herd of 300 cows and 15 Charolais bulls. All calves are backgrounded on the farm. Everyone is involved in the cattle operation having their own cows and tag color. Even before kindergarten each child is given a tag color and allowed to pick whatever heifer they want from the heifer pen. From there they can build that number up to 3 cows. They get to keep the proceeds, but their parents always keep their future education front and centre. We also keep in mind that we need present and future baler operators, so some sporty items are allowed. Consequently, Brad proudly owns his own quad and skidoo. Interest is high with bragging rights up for grabs as they constantly search the pens or pastures for their tag color. If you are the owner of cows around here expect to be summoned to help at any time. Especially calving season. It’s all hands-on deck. Kyla and Boyd have been feeding twins so long they are the ones giving me advice on how it should be done. Terri and Brad do most of the baling. A plugged baler or two, a little fire in Brad’s baler hasn’t deterred them from always trying to be a swath or two behind the combines. Our wives have both worked off the farm. Lavonne ran her own business in Kelwood for 20 years and also worked for Canada Post before retiring. Terri has worked for C.F.I.A for the past 18 years.
each year that were once bred Red Angus but for the last few years all are bred to Charolais bulls. Careful sire selection is essential and can only be accomplished by talking to the breeders. Heifer bulls with calving ease, growth potential plus performance are now available in the Charolais industry. Rather than selling in small groups or individually to different buyers, these calves are now finding their way into our top uniform packages. This amounts to a higher financial gain. We market our calves at Ste Rose Auction Mart around the first of March. We have dealt with Myles for years and he has buyers that know our calves. Our calves go into his show listing, and it is a really good program. (The show list provides the feature calves by owner, breed and weight that are selling in the up coming sale. Buyers across Canada access this list off the auction mart website). The calves are weighed off the truck and we take a pencil shrink. The calves are then sorted into uniform packages by weight. We can’t say enough about Myles for weighing each tag color separate, then blending them back together so we can get large uniform packages. These are some of the prices we received last year, 59 steers weighing 1023 sold for 2.46 bringing $2516 each, 45 steers weighing 899 sold for 2.5450 bringing $2288 each and 53 heifers weighing 812 sold for 2.37 bringing $ 1924 each.
Along with our cattle operation we farm 2000 acres of grain, some hay land plus some pastures. Darryl and I run this side of the operation as one. The first priority is to meet our feed needs. We grow 200 plus acres of silage corn each year. Custom forage harvesters are brought in and within a day or two the corn is in a pile. We bale some hay but most of our bale needs are met by silage baling oats or barley as needed each year. The Charolais thing started in the early 90’s when we planned to sell our small bunch of backgrounded calves at the Brandon Auction Mart. These calves were off Simmental cross cows bred back to a Hereford bull. Drillon Beaton who worked at the auction mart, came to the yard to view the calves after having been at our neighbors looking at his Charolais cross calves. He had several favorably comments about those calves and speculated on how well they would sell. When he walked in our pen his only comment was “well their nice and clean heh”. Thus began our long journey with Charolais bulls that has continued until today. Calving starts mid February with our 1500 lb mature cows bred to power bulls. Our goal is a 100-110 lb bull calf off these cows. 2nd calvers get easier calving bulls with a lighter birth weight. We retain 40 plus heifers

When we first started buying Charolais bulls they were purchased from local breeders who sold out of the yard One sire group was Monte Carlo’s from High Mesa Charolais of Kelwood. These bulls laid the foundation to be built upon later. Breeders started having their own sales and things moved up to a new level when we started using Cougar Hill Hank genetics from Rolling D and High Bluff Stock Farm. Many sons and grandsons were purchased over the years and one 4-year-old full son of Hank’s walks in the bull pen today, after Carman dug to the bottom of his semen tank. Those Hank bulls have the bone structure, length and thickness to produce

those 1000lb. steers the order buyers paid premium prices for. Hank bulls have a awesome disposition that they passed on to their daughters along with a great udder. Merit sons from HTA Charolais fit right in our program. Winn Man Farms over the years contributed several genetics with Ali Trade and Stout bulls staying in the herd for years. From Steppler Farms came a Braxton son recommended by Andre to use on 2nd calvers. His steer calves were at the top of the pen year after year. Many of his daughters are still in the herd today. We have always said that we have to get a Braxton son for our cow herd but we still cannot afford one from the top of his pen. Darryl bought a Seminole at Andre’s that was in the bull battery for years before being pulled out and babied for another 2 years while he bred our late calvers at home. Three herd bulls finally got to him and ended his breeding career. At the Prairie Distinction Sale in Neepawa we bought a bull from Happy Haven. I’ve forgot his genetic background but around here he was known as “Kevin”. He was trouble free, quiet and bred like a king for years. But after the 2022 horrific spring breeding conditions he had to be culled. Other bulls we have used in the past are Zorro sons from Myre Land and Cattle. From Double P Stock Farms came another awesome Zorro son, bought at the Prairie Distinction Sale. Some of the mature herd bulls at the top of our bull pen today include a El Paso son from Steppler Farms. A Sundance son from White Meadows. From Crocus Valley Farms came a Winchester son with a little extra punch we use on 2nd calvers with great results. Darryl bought a Sparrows Braxton son at C2 Charolais that has worked extremely well on heifers. I have to admit one of our most prized possessions is a Winchester son bought at one of your latest breeders yard, North of Fifty Charolais. He’s been used extensively on heifers for the last 3 years. We help a few heifers each year to get the head out but as soon as that happens the comment is always the same,”we’re home” they just slide out. But where he really shines is the growth and performance in his calves. All calves off heifers have a “H” at the top of their tag and it is simply amazing to see some of those tags in a pot load of 1000 lb steers. When the smoke cleared after the 2022 breeding season, we ended up culling 5 of our older herd sires. Most were injured either from breeding or fighting at home in 2 feet of mud and water for over a month. We went on a hunt to replace these bulls, we bought a Triumph at Cline Cattle Company, a Brimner 188 at North of Fifty Charolais and a

Crowd Favorite from R & G McDonald Livestock, a Triumph and a Three Theives from High Bluff Stock Farm. There is no way the above-mentioned bulls bred all our cows. Over the years many other genetics available in Manitoba were purchased and they run deep in our herd. I’m going to drift into the weeds and fire a shot or two at the early years of breeding Charolais. This is not intended for anyone in particular but more for exposing the growing pains of the Charolais industry and how it impacted the average commercial cattle producer. Extreme birth weights and those big brain-dead calves that had no desire to stand, suck or even live showed up away to often. I lamented to a neighbor about the hard calving and his reply was “after you’ve calved a 1000 it gets easier”. But the absolute most dreaded sight to see in a newborn calf was the “limp tongue”, 2” to 4” of tongue hanging out the side of it’s mouth, completely limp and totally useless. One or two of these would show up each year. Deep in the bowels of the Charolais genetic pool lurked this monster gene that raised its ugly head every now and then. Countless hours were spent trying to get that calf to hold and suck a teat. Bottle feeding was next to impossible. Even in the backgrounding pen they would stand with their tongue hanging out the side of their mouth. Believe me this was the only time you were amused by this defect. Eventually this problem disappeared from our herd. Years later we were talking to a retired breeder we had bought bulls from about the limp tongue, and he said that he had a few of those too. Over time the breeders began to moderate the birth weight to the point where it is now fine tuned to your specific needs. When it came to calf vigor the breeders took this head on. They found genetics with amazing calf vigor at birth and bred it into their herds. We see calves now that are a few minutes old, slopping wet and already their mouth is in a sucking motion, and they are swinging their heads looking for something to suck. Come back in 15 minutes and more often than not they are up sucking. It just warms your soul. One of the reasons they suck so quickly are the udders on these young Charolais cows. They truly are trouble free and user friendly. We feel the Charolais industry is well positioned to supply whatever type of bull you are looking for. Power bulls with moderate birth weight are commonplace. Bulls with calving ease, available for pasture

COMMERCIAL BREEDER of the year - continued calving, breeding 2nd calvers or using on those Angus herds. Also available are bulls that can be used successfully on heifers with great results. The common theme that stands out is growth and performance. Horns have all but been eliminated. Maternal instincts, calf vigor, great genetics in red or white and sound udders are second to none in the industry. In the last 30 years the cattle industry has been hit by almost everything imaginable. First it was Cool then B.S.E. followed by T.B. testing if you were in the”zone”. Droughts and floods became common. Why there are any cattle left in Manitoba after the spring of 2022 is truly amazing. Every producer has a list of horror stories that would nearly turn your hair grey over night. I personally said as the last cow finally got loaded to go the Alonsa Community Pasture from a corral built on a public road that they were not coming back. Mine were going straight to the Ste Rose Auction mart from the pasture in the fall. Take out day fell on Friday instead of Wednesday and I still claim that’s the only reason they are still here. But through it all those Charolais calves kept selling at the top of the sale. Order buyers bidding on those calves long after the ring is empty truly makes it all worth while. To sell a pot load of 1000 lb uniform steers takes outstanding genetics. Every breeder we have bought from should take pride in what they have accomplished because some of the genetics in that bunch of steers “are yours”. It is truly a great honor to receive this award and be recognized for the hard work and dedication it takes to stay in the cattle business, and we Thank You.

Press Release – MB Youth Beef Round Up – January 15th, 2024 Youth Beef Round Up would like to congratulate our 2023 Scholarship Recipients – Lainie Muir, Emily Speers and Allie Lavich. LAINIE MUIR OF GLENELLA, MB Lainie is currently attending the University of Saskatchewan taking a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Soil Science). Lainie is currently the Manitoba Director on the Canadian Junior Angus Association. In August, Lainie attended the American Angus Association LEAD conference in Modesto, California on behalf of the Canadian Angus Juniors. EMILY SPEERS OF ALEXANDER, MB Emily is currently attending Assiniboine Community College taking a diploma in Agribusiness. Emily likes to work with youth and help them with clipping and grooming. ALLIE LAVICH OF CARBERRY, MB Allie is currently attending Assiniboine Community College taking a diploma in Agribusiness. PROTOCOLS, PEOPLE AND FACILITIES LEAD TO A.I. SUCCESS

Artificial Insemination (A.I.) is an investment in the future of your beef cattle herd. The ability to use semen from a genetically superior sire, synchronize your females and have more calves born earlier in the breeding season while adding uniformity to your calf crop all add up to additional dollars in your pocket. But, how can you make sure you are maximizing the return on your investment? In most cases, the success of your A.I. project comes down to three things: protocols, people and facilities. PROTOCOLS First and foremost, having the protocols in place to not only synchronize the females in your herd, but to ensure the females you do synchronize are good candidates for A.I., will help you achieve the results you desire. There are a few basic rules of thumb used to ensure females are good candidates for A.I. CRITERIA FOR SYNCHRONIZING HEIFERS: › Should have achieved 60-65% of mature body weight › Minimum of 50% should have a reproductive tract score of ≥ 4 at six weeks before breeding If you don’t have a veterinarian in your area that offers reproductive tract scoring, don’t panic! You can achieve the same thing by visually observing heifers for heat in the weeks and months leading up to breeding. You want to observe at least 50% are cycling six weeks prior to breeding. CRITERIA FOR SYNCHRONIZING COWS: › Body condition score of ≥ 5 at calving › Group should average a postpartum interval of ≥ 40 days at the beginning of the protocol › Each cow should be a minimum of 21 days postpartum at the time of Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® insertion › Low incidence of calving difficulty The next thing you need to consider is what synchronization protocol will you use. Research suggests some protocols perform better than others, but just because research says it’s the best protocol, doesn’t necessarily make it the best protocol for your operation. Ask yourself three questions before choosing a synchronization protocol: › How many times am I willing to put the female through the chute? › How much am I willing to spend on synchronization drugs? › What are my expectations for results? Once you know the answers to these questions you can objectively analyze which synchronization program is the best fit for your operation. No matter what the research or experts tell you, the best protocol for your operation is one that aligns with your goals. It’s the protocol you are 100% confident you can perform perfectly from start to finish. PEOPLE Hand in hand with having the proper protocols in place is having people in place to ensure the protocols are carried out correctly. Synchronization protocol compliance means the right cow gets the right shot (or CIDR insertion/removal, MGA, etc.) on the right day or at the right hour. Following the chosen protocol also means utilizing proper dosage and handling of the synchronization drugs. Here, education is key. If your whole crew

understands why each step of the program is important and why timing is crucial to its success, then there will be more buy-in and everyone will take ownership of the program. Proper cattle handling is also an important part of a successful A.I. project. Most synchronization protocols require 3-4 trips through the chute. When it comes to gathering, sorting and getting cattle through the A.I. barn, nothing is worse than having people there who don’t believe in what you are doing. Additionally, an A.I. project is no place for a hot shot, instead choose a flag whip or sorting stick. Small changes in how you handle cattle can lead to big differences in the stress level of both the cows and your cowboy crew. If your cowboy crew is excited about A.I. day, they are calmer, more patient and easier on cattle. Less people with more experience and patience will yield better results almost every time. FACILITIES The final piece of the puzzle when it comes to a successful A.I. project is facilities. As I already mentioned synchronization protocols can require several trips through the chute, so good facilities are important, but there is no need to recreate your entire corral system or panic if you don’t think yours measures up. If you have questions about your facility design, visit with your local A.I. professional. Most have several years of experience under their belts and have seen successful A.I. projects happen with many different set-ups. Your technician may suggest minor changes to your facilities to help handle the females in a safe, low stress and efficient manner. Many will be able to provide you with a portable breeding barn on A.I. day to make things go even more smoothly; this means if you have some pens to hold the females and sort into (if needed) and an alleyway, then you are in business. Don’t let a lack of facilities hold you back from a project either. Again, visit with your technician. There are several options for portable corral and chute systems that can make your dream of synchronizing and breeding females on pasture a reality. Some technicians even have those set-ups available for you to use during your project. Having the proper protocols, people and facilities in place will help you realize the maximum return on your investment in your next A.I. project. Don’t let it overwhelm you though. Put in place protocols that work best for your operation, surround yourself with people that support the project and consider small facility redesigns that can help make things flow smoothly. Most of all, if you have any questions, make sure to reach out to your local A.I. professional. They have lots of experience to draw on and are committed to your success.
