Traditional Beautiful Design

The month of love May 1 is the "Day of Love" here in the Czech Republic, but for us it's actually the entire month of love. First off, there's the Prague Fringe Festival kicking off on May 24th, and we love good live performance. For the second year, we're a sponsor we love it so much. Its your chance to see world class talent from the around the world performing theatre, caberet, comedy in more, with nearly 250 performances happening over just nine days. Best of all, it's affordable too - so try and see at least a few shows. We also love that it's all packed into the Mala Strana neighborhood, meaning you can literally walk from performance to performance and really make a day of it. We also chat with Steve Gove this month, the

RESIDENT WWW.PRAGUEVISITOR.EU D /praguevisitor

founder and director of Prague Fringe and find out how it's gone from humble beginnings to be the largest English language theatre event in the Czech Republic in it's 18 years. Speaking of aging gracefully, Naplavka market turns 10 years old this month, and if that's not enough reason to go by and visit, remember it's "Pink May' on the riverfront, which means of course the season for Rose wines. Last month in our sister publication The Prague Visitor, we wrote an article about some of our favorite Prague 1 breakfast restaurants (Full disclosure - a few were actually Prague 5 because of the side of the street they're on, but tourists don't know that). This month, we're actually taking that story

a bit further and telling you about our favorite breakfast restaurants across Prague. Of course, with over 6000 restaurants in Prague, there's no way to have a complete list of great places to start the day - but this is our list. Feel free to email us (editor@ praguevisitor.eu) and tell us what we've missed or give us suggestions. And while we're talking about food, we also go check out the Prague Street Food Festival. If you missed it last month, don't worry - there's a Street Food Jam happening this month , so head out to get your fill of great street food and live music. Enjoy your May!

Beauty and the Beast

PraguePig.com’s Sam Beckwith looks at the mean memes, missing persons and madcap criminals making news in the Czech Republic The abduction of Sofie Mikyšková was another shocking story but this time, at least, one with a happier ending. The five-year-old was snatched by two men on April 16th, outside her grandmother’s home in Uhříněves, a southeastern suburb of Prague. The police quickly appealed to the public for help finding not only Sofie but also her mother, who is forbidden from contacting her daughter. Within 24 hours, Sofie was found, with her mum, at the airport in Vienna. According to news site iDNES.cz, Sofie is in her grandmother’s care following a bitter breakup. Sofie’s father told iDNES.cz that his ex-wife suffers from a personality disorder. She, in turn, has accused him of child abuse.

Police Blotter

Two very different images dominated the Czech internet over the past month. For Emma Smetana, one of two Czech celebrities whose photo went viral recently, it was a month to forget. The attractive 31-year-old sings and acts but is probably best known for a four-year stint as news anchor on Nova, the country’s most-watched TV station, but now works for the decidedly more highbrow online news operation at DVTV. Smetana, who was raised in France, was in Paris at the time of the Notre-Dame fire. Moved by the sight of the burning cathedral, she posted a sadlooking photo of herself in front of the burning building on Instagram. Big mistake. The fateful selfie was widely ridiculed, and soon Photoshopped onto countless other historical tragedies: 9/11, the JFK assassination, the Hindenburg disaster… You get the picture. The meme spread with such speed and ferocity that Smetana’s DVTV colleagues began to question whether the mockery hadn’t spilled over into outright cyber-bullying. Online ridicule is familiar territory for President Miloš Zeman, the other famous Czech to get the meme treatment this month. In this case, the feeding frenzy began when presidential spokesman Jiří Ovčáček’s tweeted a

photo of Zeman riding a ghost train during their April 1st visit to Prague’s Matějská pouť funfair. The vaguely creepy image soon inspired a full-on Reddit Photoshop battle, won by an amazing Tales from the Crypt-themed creation by a user called Shashakeitup.

Missing in Prague Two of the month’s biggest stories involved missing persons. On the evening of Sunday, April 14th, motherof-two Zuzana Vizcardo Mravová left her home in Prague 3-Žižkov, supposedly to take a yoga class on Národní třída, and never returned. Complicating matters, the 37-year-old Slovak expat left without her phone, and had had her ID stolen a couple of days earlier. Vizcardo Mravová’s body was found three days later, following an extensive police search of the Divoká Šárka nature reserve in Prague 6-Liboc, more than 11 kilometers from where she was last seen alive. According to Blesk, Jan Štoček, one of the Czech police’s top homicide investigators, had been present at the search, prompting speculation that Vizcardo Mravová had been murdered. By Thursday, April 18th, however, the police had ruled out foul play, announcing that the body showed no visible signs of injury. At time of writing, no further information was available.

Thankfully, most cases that the Czech police deal with are far less serious. Here are a few of PraguePig.com’s favorites from the past month: Regional TV station Polar reported on an incident in Vřesina, near Ostrava, in which a cop crashed his police car in the woods. The police officer had been racing to the assistance of a colleague who had been trying to arrest a man for illegally burning fallen leaves outside his house. Police investigating a robbery in the former Hussite stronghold of Tábor, South Bohemia appealed to “experts from museums and [to] collectors” for information about a suitably oldschool weapon: a traditional wooden mace. Prague cops finally apprehended the man responsible for a peculiarly low-tech crime in Dolní Chabry, in which a man on a bicycle snatched 400,000 crowns in cash from a woman on a kick scooter. Sadly, the “cyclo-phantom” and his accomplices had already spent three-quarters of the stolen money. Police were called to a luxurious villa in Prague 7 after the owner returned home to find a Polishspeaking 67-year-old homeless man living it up on the premises. Over two days, the unwelcome guest had eaten everything in the fridge and was wearing the owner’s clothes—including a rather smart necktie—when the police arrived. Finally, cops were called after a trolleybus driver in the South Bohemian city of České Budějovice was spotted painting her toenails while driving. Predictably, the driver failed a subsequent drugs test. May 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Prague’s Street Food Haven By Sarah Jackson What do a dancer, a service manager at a forklift company, and some Town Hall employees have in common? They’re part of a team trying to expand the street food scene in Prague. Prague’s Street Food Festival was born in 2014 when a group of four foodies tried to put together a party where some of their friends could show off their cooking skills. They ended up rallying 30 food vendors for a festival that drew in 5,000 visitors. “It was the idea of one cook, and it just grew from there,” said Zuzana Menhartová, who has been on the team since its inception and does marketing and budgeting for the festival. Like everyone else on the team, working on the festival is a hobby for her, not a full-time job. When she’s not working on the festival, she works as brand manager and production manager in the new Town Hall in Prague 2. “It’s something that we do because we are friends, and we like people in gastronomy in Prague, and we would like to definitely support street food in the Czech Republic,” Menhartová said. The team has changed over the years but its mission is always the same: fill what its members see as a void in Prague’s culinary industry. “Czech cuisine is not too much about the street food,” Menhartová said. “In Asia or in London, for example, they are used to having something good on the street, but here we are used to having dumplings and meat and something that you are not eating on the street. … We would like to show people that you can buy something really special and very good on the street.”

To do this, the now six-person team organizes two outdoor festivals a year, one in spring and one in fall. On April 14, this year’s spring festival at Cross Club in Holešovice featured nearly 50 vendors whipping up everything from jerk chicken, fresh seafood and sliders to Peruvian empanadas, mini donuts and classic American barbecue. When curating their vendor selection, the team members rely on taste tests of vendors’ offerings to make sure quality is king. They also try to strike a balance between professional chefs and up-and-comers in the culinary industry. “We create a very good opportunity to somebody who would like to start with their own business in gastronomy to try it in our festival,” Menhartová said. One of her happiest moments from working on the team, in fact, is seeing amateur chefs from the inaugural festival running their own eateries now. Live music, DJs and even some children’s theater add to the atmosphere at the festivals, and the cogs and bolts of large decorative mechanical structures that dot the outdoor venue give it a steampunk feel. “We are not mainstream,” Menhartová said. “We are very punk.” Besides its function to carve out a space for street fare in Prague’s culinary canon, the festival is also designed to introduce visitors to foods — and people — that they may not otherwise have encountered. “It’s, in a very natural way, a very multicultural place, and I hope it’s something that can affect the whole of Prague,” Menhartová said. “To have dinner together, to have a lunch, is a perfect opportunity to be friends. It’s not important who is coming from

where. It’s only about if the meal is good or not.” Judging from attendance numbers, it’s safe to say the meals are pretty good. The crowd at this spring’s festival swelled to 10,000 hungry guests, roughly twice as many as there were at the festival’s debut just three years ago. For those looking to get a tasty slice of the action before the winter festival rolls around, the team hosts Street Food Jams in the meantime. About one-fourth of the size of the main festivals, the jams offer a more intimate space to try food from 10 to 12 vendors. Starting in May, you can expect to see one each month until the winter festival on Sept. 15 this year. “We’re trying to show people that Prague needs a place where it is possible to go regularly for street food,” Menhartová said. With such ease of access in mind, the team has drawn up plans to add a third festival to their routine: They hope to launch an outdoor winter street food festival in the future. “Very little in Prague is outside, in the outdoors,” Menhartová said. “People would like to go somewhere where they can meet their friends even in winter, so we would like to do something in the winter.” Regardless of how many festivals are in its repertoire, the team has high standards for every event it puts on. “The future is to keep the quality, to keep the atmosphere, to keep being authentic,” Menhartová said. “It is not a small goal.” May 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

Surviving Prague's Pollen

Allergy season is upon us - here's how to get through it There's no denying it, the Czech Republic during the spring is an amazing place to be. But outdoor activities like biking, camping, hiking or even just a day in the park can be miserable if you're an allergy sufferer. Itching and burning eyes, a persistent cold, constant sneezing and a stuffy nose, breathing complications, swelling and drowsiness … those represent the daily reality for patients suffering from pollen allergies. Some of the unpleasant symptoms can be improved by over-the-counter medication. However, if the complications persist, treatment by a specialist at an allergology practice should be a priority. Accurate diagnosis always translates to more effective treatment. For example, untreated hay fever (allergic rhinitis) without any supervision from a specialist can translate to allergic bronchitis accompanied by a cough and significant fatigue. Significant respiratory allergies can even lead to asthma attacks which can be life-threatening. The occurrence of allergies is always a reaction to an immune system disorder. Allergic symptoms can therefore surprise you unexpectedly at any point in your life when your organism is weakened. This is why allergology and immunology practices are often visited by patients in later adulthood despite the fact that they have never had any such problems before. Pollen allergies belong to the most common allergy types and represent a nuisance to sufferers approximately from the beginning of March until September. Most patients experience hypersensitivity to more types of pollen (or a combination of pollen and food allergies) and therefore often suffer from difficulties for several weeks or months throughout the entire pollen season. Traditional allergens manifest themselves at the onset of spring by tree pollen (blooming alder, birches, linden trees and more). The second half of the spring is associated with grass and grain (rye) pollen. At the peak of the summer and the onset of fall, allergies are most commonly triggered by herb pollen (wormwood, chamomile or plantain).

I sneeze, you sneeze, they sneeze…

Pollen allergies are most commonly characterized by an abundantly runny nose, abrupt sneezing attacks accompanied by a persistently congested nose, which cannot be cleared. Initial symptoms are then accompanied by itching (in the ears, throat and the mouth), watery eyes, burning and red eyes or eczematous rashes on the skin. Further, living with allergies has other undesirable symptoms including sleeping problems and fatigue which can greatly reduce the quality of life. The unpleasant symptoms explained earlier do not have to be all present at the same time. You

should consider a visit to a specialist when you start experiencing at least two of them. Patients suffering from seasonal allergies experience a quick onset of acute symptoms. In the case of year-round allergies, the most apparent symptom patients experience is the obstruction of the nasal passages.

What treatment options are available?

It is important to first free-up the airways which is best accomplished by using nasal sprays which contain substances which soothe the mucosa and therefore improve breathing. Over -the-counter medication is readily available and usually helps in reducing the swelling within the nose. However, it does not deal with the allergic reaction itself. It is therefore best to use sprays which aim to directly suppress the allergic reaction itself. In its severe form, standard nasal sprays with saltwater are insufficient and require the application of antiinflammatory topical nasal steroids. The symptoms of hay fever can be mitigated or entirely suppressed with the correct medication, particularly local or systemic in nature. The market here offers antihistamines (medication that suppresses allergic reactions) which are freely available. It is recommended that antihistamines are administered from the onset of allergic symptoms. They can be taken intermittently based on the extent and frequency of complications. The healing process should naturally include permanent avoidance of environments with increased pollen presence. At home, during the most critical season, you should keep your windows shut whenever you can (they can be equipped with

pollen filters/guards). Further, you should also wash your hair as often as possible. When outside, you should keep your head protected by wearing a hat or similar. A significant part of suppressing allergic symptoms is associated with the correct diet composition. Patients suffering from allergies should focus on strengthening the immunity. Each day, it is essential to include foods rich in minerals, antioxidants and trace elements which strengthen the body’s defenses. Increased consumption of vegetables and fruits (citrus fruits, spring onions or similar) will most certainly benefit your body.

Do not underestimate the spring sun

The summer is not the only season known to cause troubles – the spring sun rays can also be tricky. The sun in spring can be strong enough to cause a rash on more sensitive skin on the face or the chest. It is not rare to come across sunburns if you do not protect your skin sufficiently. These unpleasant skin reaction problems can be prevented by taking similar precautions like we do in the summer, i.e. by wearing sunglasses, using UVprotective sunscreen as well as covering your head. If the rays cause your skin trouble, you can soothe your skin with products that contain panthenol and have a moisturizing effect. Do you suffer from pollen allergies and want to speak to a specialist? Canadian Medical has specialists that are here to help. For more information or to book a visit, please call their call center on +420 235 360 133 or use their online booking form at canadian.cz. May 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

STEVE GOVE:

FOUNDING FRINGE CELEBRATING IT'S 18TH YEAR, WE CHAT WITH THE FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF PRAGUE FRINGE FESTIVAL

Photo and styling by @miraromaniv

When 29 year old Steve Gove arrived in Prague from Scotland in the Autumn of 1997, like many other expats at that time – he was aiming to enjoy a few years sightseeing and take in the culture of his newly adopted home. Little did he know that two decades later, he would be the proud Founder of the longestrunning and largest English-language theatre event in mainland Europe. Before relocating to Prague, Gove (a native of the North-East of Scotland) began his journey into the world of Fringe after leaving a secure teaching job for a summer position with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe - the mother Fringe from which over three hundred spin-off Fringe Festivals across the world have been launched. The Edinburgh Fringe is a veritable “who’s who” of stars who got their big-break as a result of performing in the Scottish capital, including the likes of Robin Williams, Susan Sarandon, Ricky Gervais, Rowan Atkinson, Alan Rickman, Graham Norton and Little Britain creators Matt Lucas and David Walliams. 28

PRAGUE RESIDENT | May 2019

Originally formed in the late 1940s as a spin-off event of the city’s main (and rather formal) annual festival, the concept underpinning all Fringes around the world is quite simple – alternative arts presented in an accessible format with minimal censorship. The work on display can include theatre, comedy, performance art, spoken-word, installations, readings, magic, kids shows and much, much, more. a sense of (without sounding too cliché) being part of a real family atmosphere, a sense of community.” Says Gove. The Edinburgh Fringe meant so much to Gove, in fact, that he would spend his free-time flying back from his new home in Prague to work at the festival each August. Eventually he thought to himself “We should have something like this here”. And why not? With established Fringe Festivals in many major cities all over the globe – Gove thought perhaps launching a Fringe-inspired festival in Prague wasn’t such a bad idea. There was definitely a hole in the Prague market, Gove felt, with very little English-speaking theatre on

offer in the city, other than ballet or opera, the options for tourists were limited to black-light theatre and marionette shows. Young Czechs were all speaking English and a rising number of expats were moving here from the UK, USA, Australia and countries across Europe, Gove began to sketch out plans for the ‘Prague English Language International Theatre Festival’. “Such a snappy title” jokes Gove! It wasn’t long before he thought – “why don’t we simplify this and just start a fringe festival, whereby we can have an open arts event, anyone can apply and it’ll be a really interesting mix of genre and work from countries from around the world.” And so the Prague Fringe concept was born. Full of ambition and excitement, Gove and his co-founders (Angus Coull, a fellow Scot, and Carole Wears from Newcastle, England who Gove had met working at an Edinburgh Fringe venue) publicly announced the launch of the new Prague Fringe at a press conference at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2001. This statement put Prague Fringe on the map as

the first Fringe Festival in mainland Europe and one of only thirty around the globe at that time. “We held the press conference at the Pivo Café, was which was Edinburgh’s Czech bar and we announced it to a handful of Scottish press.” It wasn’t until Gove left the press conference that the realisation dawned on him the pressure was now on, and reality soon hit as the planning of the inaugural Prague Fringe got underway. Getting performers to come all the way to Prague was a task in itself, but ensuring they’d have an audience was just as challenging. Back in the days of internet cafes and dial-up connections and with the beginning of the inaugural festival upon them and the first performance about to begin, they hadn’t sold a single ticket to that show, or any other performance in the entire festival, for that matter. “We thought ‘What the hell have we done?! This is going be a complete disaster’”. Panic stricken, Gove and his colleagues’ anxieties were put to rest as an eager customer appeared. “This guy ran up to us and said, ‘are there any tickets left?!’” And we grabbed him, sold him a ticket, the first performance started, and the rest is history.” One ticket culminated in around 400 attendances in 2002, at this stage the team weren’t sure if these were good numbers or not, but the fact that they had managed to pull off the five-day event at all, was a huge success as far as they were concerned. What was clear however, was that people were coming from all over the world to attend the event, and international visitors to the Fringe still make up a core percentage of the overall attendees. Gove recalls an Australian couple who the fringe team met one year when handing out flyers on the Charles Bridge who were delighted to discover the city had a Fringe. They ended up seeing six shows that year before flying back to Australia. Two years later they came back with two friends and have been returning to the city for Prague’s Fringe ever since. This sense of community built before, during and after the festival is unlike any

Despite the size of the festival, which nowadays is a significant player alongside other annual events in the city, there’s still a feeling of “togetherness” as Gove put it This is what Fringe does best; build and foster relationships between people from all over the world to celebrate a compilation of theatre, arts and comedy. Gove described one venue in particular which captures the quintessential Fringe setting - the pop-up theatre in the basement of the Golden Key Hotel which at a squeeze, can accommodate about 20 audience members per performance. “You’ll recognise some people sitting next to you, maybe you’ll recognise people you saw at the show an hour ago. Not to mention after the show you’d wander down to a bar later to see the people you were sitting with and ask them how they liked the show.” “Whether you’re a technician or an artist, a tourist travelling from Australia, a member of the volunteer box-office team, or someone that just walked out of their apartment in Malá Strana, there’s a sense of it being everyone’s event, everyone’s in it together. And that’s a beautiful thing to witness unfolding day by day.” What’s even better is the range of work presented on the eight intimate stages on which the festival takes place. Each year brings around 50 companies from all over the world to showcase their performances on stage. Gove mentions one artist in particular, Henry Naylor (writer of the Bafta award-winning British satirical series Spitting Image), whose exceptional work has earned him five-star reviews round the world, and Prague Fringe Awards for three consecutive years. In 2018, Naylor brought “Games by Henry Naylor” to Prague Fringe, which told the story of a young fencer in the 30’s who was denied entry into the Olympics because of her Jewish ethnicity. Gove cited Naylor as an incredibly exciting writer and is looking forward to his brand-new production premiering at this year’s

festival entitled “Crime Story by Henry Naylor”. Although it can be a gamble, financially and artistically, Gove noted the artists’ experience of bringing a show to Prague can be an incredibly valuable one. “Many of the artist can end up taking a piece of work that they have trialled in Prague to festivals in Scotland and Australia, so it’s a breeding ground for new talent as well as a place where awardwinning, celebrated writers, like Naylor, can hone their new work.” So what does the future hold for Prague Fringe? With the 20th anniversary fast approaching, it is now one of the longest-running Fringes in the world. But rather than trying to expand the event year on year and grow the festival into a huge, city-wide event as many Fringes have done around the world (including Edinburgh which is now the world’s largest arts event), Gove and his team have a different aim - to keep the event boutique, to retain the unique family atmosphere, and focus on continuing to improve the festival for all involved, and to continue to bring ground-breaking, award-winning and genre-bending theatre, comedy, cabaret and more to Prague for years to come. When asked what he believes are the reasons behind the enduring success of the Fringe, Gove explains “It’s due to a number of things; the beauty and lure of Prague - for artists, visitors, and international team members alike, the intimacy and communityfeel of the event, and the dedication of core members of the team and Fringe partners and supporters, many of whom have been involved since the festival began all those years ago. Long live Fringe!” The 18th Prague Fringe takes place from Friday 24th May - Saturday 1st June 2019, full programme and tickets on sale now via www.fringe.cz. Prague’s nine day extravaganza of English-language theatre, comedy, cabaret and more. Fringe festivals find their roots in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1947, a small, bold group of theatre companies decided to crash the Edinburgh International Festival and perform in the surrounding areas. These artists were driven to build a community where all types of audiences and performers were welcome. This spirit remains at the heart of the worldwide Fringe community today. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has grown from those eight initial companies to thousands of performances over a three-week period and now it’s gone global. There are Fringe festivals from Perth, Australia to Paris, France; from Bergen, Norway to Brighton, England. Prague joined the landscape in 2002, with this year marking the 18th annual Prague Fringe Festival.

Creative World Inspires By Sarah Jackson

Prague’s Creative World truly is a world unto itself. The event space and hands-on craft hub takes pages from the books of “Alice in Wonderland,” herbalism and Mother Nature, to name a few of its influences. Creative World has existed in name for approximately ten years, selling “creative packs,” project kits with all the necessary materials for guests to assemble crafts like birdhouses, decorative masks and magic lanterns. However, the company has only had its physical space in Holešovice for the past year. (It also previously had an address in Zličín but its owners, high school friends-turned-business partners Helena Neumannová and Milena Krčálová, decided to move shop to Holešovice to have a bigger space.) In that time, the new location has allowed Neumannová and Krčálová to expand the breadth of Creative World’s services. Thanks to this bigger brick-and-mortar space, Creative World now also offers an event space, a café and a DIY room where guests can make everything from origami and wooden catch-alls to lavender sugar scrubs. But Creative World’s physical space isn’t limited to its two-story space at Přívozní 937/3. A vital part of the business comes from a field in Chodouň, about 30 miles outside of Prague. This is where the company sources the organic lavender that goes into many of its products, from the refreshing lavender lemonade sold at its café to the potpourri sachets visitors can make downstairs in the DIY room. Neumannová and Krčálová have long had an interest in learning about the natural world, so incorporating lavender into Creative World’s offerings seemed like a fitting way to pass along this fascination. (Neumannová, for example, inherited her appreciation for nature from her grandmother, who would always tell her, “more herbs, more health.”) On site in Holešovice, Creative World’s most popular service is its event space. Named the Birthday House, the 1000-square meter space actually accommodates everything from birthday parties for kids to conferences and team-building workshops for employers. If you’re looking to plan a party, some popular choices at the moment are hippie- or “Star Wars”-themed parties, and most parties feature some kind of interactive game, such as a treasure hunt, that encourages kids to observe the world around them and engage all of their senses. Located on the upper floor, the Birthday House is an open concept space but is divided into themed areas; visitors can explore the cheery Flower Zone with its outsized wreath of roses, or peruse the whimsical Wonderland corner modeled after “Alice

in Wonderland,” complete with an giant tea cup and

Creative World strives to have a little something for

playing cards hanging from the ceiling. The café completes the upper floor, serving up dishes like veal cutlets, cream of spinach soup, omelets and more. If you’re feeling more hungry than creative, you can always drop by the café for a nice lunch without making any crafts while you’re there. Downstairs, in the DIY room, guests have free reign to make crafts from wood, paper, herbs and more. For kids, there are ample play areas here, with small play houses, sandboxes and bubbles galore. Downstairs also offers Nintendo Lab, where children can assemble cardboard creations such as a piano or fishing pole which can then function by incorporating a Nintendo game system. In addition to its creative packs and DIY room, the company also tries to help guests get their creative juices flowing by offering two or three workshops each month. In April, for example, visitors could register for the “Spring Trail” workshop. Designed in honor of Easter, the hands-on experience featured activities like Easter egg decorating and making a chocolate lamb. Although events like the “Spring Trail” workshop are usually marketed more towards children,

everyone. “We basically say from zero to 99 years old, we have a program for you,” said Alex Williamson, the company’s public relations representative. “The main thing is just to forget about your stressful life and maybe to create something on your own. Stop thinking about other things, and let’s create something from A to Z.” In the future, Neumannová and Krčálová would like to open a park and a lavender spa as they continue their mission of bringing people closer to nature. Whether guests plan a party in advance or simply stop by on the spur of the moment to make some crafts, Creative World is all about offering guests a taste of both education and entertainment through its distinctive brand of “smart fun.” “We look a lot into creativity but also education,” Williamson said. “The aim of Creative World is that every single visitor is happy, and they do something which they can take home, as well as learning something and understanding about nature.” May 2019 | PRAGUE RESIDENT

FILMED in prague Prague through the lens of directors who have shot here. For more, follow filmedinprague on Instagram.

BY Bektash Musa G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) tells the story of an elite military unit of special operatives known as the G.I Joe working to take down an evil organization lead by a notorious arms dealer. With stars like Channing Tatum from 21 Jump Street and Ray Park from Star Wars: Phantom Menace, it doesn’t get more action packed than this. What’s great about these movies is their ability to take you all over the world to exotic locations you’ve either never been to or heard of, just like the James Bond 42

franchise. One of those locations happens to be right in the heart of Old Town in Prague. In a scene with Marlon Wayans (who plays Ripcord in the film) about midway through the film, Prague’s very own Danube House can be seen in the background. More specifically, right behind Wayans is the back exterior of the building. Fun fact, the design of the building is modeled after the shape of a similar office complex called the Chilehaus in Hamburg, Germany. Built in the 1920 by German architect Fritz Hoger, the style of both buildings is of Brick Expressionism, a variant of expressionist architecture popular in the early 20th century. Interestingly, most of the cast members had

little knowledge of G.I Joe before filming, except for Dennis Quaid’s (Who plays General Hawk in the film) son whose fascination of the franchise convinced him to take on the role. Other cast members like Ray Park (who plays Snake Eyes in the film) had fond childhood members of playing with G.I Joe action figures. Park recalled having a Snake Eyes action figure as a kid, little did he know he’d grow up to play the samurai-wielding ninja himself decades later. The Danube House can be found right outside the Florenc Metro stop in Prague 1.
