2010 Annual Report

Because you stand with Planned Parenthood...

In 2010, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) served as a courageous advocate in the face of strident anti-choice extremism, brought sexual health information to some of the county’s most at-risk teenagers, and kept the doors of our health centers open for every single person who needed care. Indeed, despite an economic recession, despite a 15 percent increase in patient visits, and despite endless political attacks, PPNC stood strong thanks to friends like you. You stood with us in providing preventive health care to more than 13,000 community members, an increasing number of whom are uninsured and underinsured and in need of subsidized services. For too many of these individuals, Planned Parenthood isn’t just their source of reproductive health care, we are their only source of health care and medically-accurate information. You also stood with us in giving 35,000 young people and families in Nassau County the skills they need to make smart, safe and responsible decisions about their sexual health. Day after day, our educators are in classrooms and out on the street, talking about issues such as teen pregnancy prevention, HIV testing, self-esteem and healthy relationships. Equally important, you stood with us in speaking out in support of access to health care and medicallyaccurate sexuality education. This past year, in the face of distressing national election results and increased anti-choice extremism on the federal, state and local level, our grassroots organizing efforts were critically important in safeguarding our reproductive rights. Planned Parenthood is essential to the health and well-being of our community, caring for our women, men and teens and fighting for their rights with every tool we have. And people like you, in turn, are essential to making this work possible. We are so thankful that you chose to stand with Planned Parenthood in 2010— there is no doubt that your support made a real difference in the lives of our 40,000 clients.

MISSION Planned Parenthood of Nassau County seeks to empower individuals to make independent, informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives by providing access to medically-sound health care and educational services, and by promoting public policies to make those services available to all.

I stand with Planned Parenthood for...

In 2010, more than 13,000 people turned to Planned Parenthood of Nassau County for low-cost reproductive health care: women struggling with the basic necessities and unable to pay for their birth control pills; first-time moms with no health insurance and nowhere else to turn for prenatal care; college students who can barely afford tuition, let alone emergency contraception or GYN exams. All of these women, and many, many more, had a safe, affordable, compassionate place to turn to for health care thanks to the support of people like you.

• Increasing the dissemination of emergency contraception (EC) to prevent unintended pregnancy. Through funding from the New York State Department of Health, EC is available for free to all PPNC patients. Giving teenagers the skills they need to make safe, healthy decisions... helping parents talk to their kids about sex... reaching out to at-risk communities to promote sexual health... spreading the word about where to access family planning services—at PPNC, our educators do all of this work, and so much more, to ensure the health and well-being of everyone in our community. In 2010, thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, these efforts were successful in reaching more than 36,000 teens, families and professionals. Highlights include: • Launching a new program called Visiones Para Jovenes (Vision for Youth) to encourage Latino youth to delay sexual activity and prevent pregnancy. In its first year, Visiones provided evidence-based sexuality education, street outreach and other services to more than 5,000 youth, and was recognized by Planned Parenthood Federation of American with the Affiliate Excellence Award in Community Education. • Attending a Young Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C., during which four of our Teen Advocate Project (TAP) peer educators participated in workshops, networked with other peer groups and planned educational and organizing activities to conduct locally throughout the year. • Helping a group of Latino students from Hempstead High School and the Hispanic Counseling Center to create a bilingual Public Service Announcement (PSA) about teen pregnancy prevention. The PSA, called “Protect & Prevent/Protégé Y Previene,” was shown to more than 1,000 students and posted on-line. • Reaching out to at-risk women of color about the importance of HIV testing through the adult peer education program WOMEN (Women’s Outreach Motivation Education Network). The program was awarded a new grant from the New York State Department of Health to expand its scope to include additional education about the link between HIV and sexually transmitted infections. • Conducting a community outreach day in Hempstead to promote awareness about PPNC and encourage young people to come to us for reproductive health care. The TAP teens went door-to-door to hand out information on Planned Parenthood, HIV/AIDS, family communication and teen pregnancy prevention to local businesses, restaurants and community members, reaching 580 people in just one day.

At Planned Parenthood, we are in the unique position of not only providing health care and sexuality education, but leading the pro-choice charge to protect access to these critically-important programs and services. We are proud to work together with supporters like you to educate and mobilize more than 6,000 local activists, build relationships with government officials, and promote pro-choice, pro-family and prowoman polices and legislation locally, in the state and across the nation. Highlights include: • Advocating for health care reform that advances women’s health. Our supporters spoke out on this issue by attending Days of Action in Washington, D.C., lobbying our federal legislators, phone banking, writing letters-to-the-editor and sending emails. These efforts were successful in securing passage of legislation that expands Medicaid coverage of family planning services and ensures that women can access these services at their local Planned Parenthood health center. We were also able to defeat the Stupak amendment, which would have prohibited insurance coverage for abortion services altogether. • Celebrating the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by hosting an event featuring Aspen Baker, founder of the after-abortion talkline Exhale. This thoughtful, inspiring and provocative lecture was attended by more than 100 people and addressed questions of how we can use women’s stories about abortion to encourage understanding and ensure access. • Talking to our state legislators about legislation that would provide for cultural competence training for health care providers, as well as Medicaid funding for language interpretation services in health care settings. • Participating in a national Sex Ed Week of Action to empower young people to speak out in support of comprehensive sex education. Our Teen Advocate Project peer educators chalked attention-catching slogans and colorful pictures with prevention messages on the sidewalks in Hempstead and hosted a visibility event on the street in front of our health center holding signs that contained messages such as “Support Real Sex Ed.” • Organizing phone banks and sending emails to encourage our New York State representatives to support the Reproductive Health Act, which would strengthen New York State’s abortion laws and protect women’s reproductive health and rights. The bill was introduced for the first time in the Assembly, although it did not make it to the floor during the 2010 legislative session.
