COMMUNITY PROJECTS WITH GIVIT

Our In It Together campaign, together with GIVIT, has been helping rebuild communities. Taubmans has proudly supported GIVIT since 2020 by running a yearly campaign with proceeds going to GIVIT. GIVIT is a charitable foundation who has just over 4,600 charity organisations registered to receive support and donations. Taubmans has donated $515,000 to GIVIT since the annual In It Together campaigns began in 2020 and these funds have supported over 199 communities nationally. These donations have gone to the purchase of items like paint, lawnmowers, bedding, washing machines, local business vouchers and more. Donations of everyday items have an enormous impact on families recovering and rebuilding for a better future. Here are some of the community projects directly supported by funds raised from Taubmans’ In It

04

Together campaign for GIVIT. The 2021 – 2022 GIVIT campaign period supported the following: $2,262 worth of vouchers to help families get back on their feet after setbacks experienced from the flood disasters. 31 home appliances, worth over $30,000 including fridges, lawnmowers and washing machines. All for families who lost many of their essential appliances from recent natural disasters. 51 donations of computers and devices including iPads and laptops to help educate and connect vulnerable and disadvantaged Australians. Taubmans In It Together campaign with GIVIT is something we are truly proud of! Find out more about GIVIT and donate at www.givit.org.au.

THE BURLEIGH BEACH SHACK

BURLEIGH DREAM

The kitchen of beachside dreams! A collaboration with Coloursmith by Taubmans, kaboodle kitchen and Front Porch Properties. With kaboodle kitchen’s Paint Your Own Doors range, you can use your own paint and colour selection to personalise and complement your dream kitchen. Rachael Turner and her Front Porch Properties team transformed this kitchen as part of our collaboration with kaboodle kitchen’s Paint Your Own Doors range and Coloursmith by Taubmans. The Burleigh Beach Shack is in an idyllic location on the sunny and warm Gold Coast – located directly across the road from the beach, it is the perfect holiday home for this lucky family. Rachael transformed the home for the family with Donna Guyler from Donna Guyler Design.

08

The amazing kitchen island bench was crafted using kaboodle kitchen’s raw MDF multi-purpose board and bench dividers, as well as a kaboodle kitchen benchtop. The inspiration for the colour was taken from items like wall tiles and sentimental jewellery and the Coloursmith Reader brought this colour to life – landing on the colour titled Burleigh Dream. The bench was painted using Taubmans Water Based Enamel for a hard-wearing and durable finish. What a beautiful result.

METAL SURFACE RENOVATION WITH RUST GUARD

When you have the right products refreshing any metal surface at home can be a fun and satisfying DIY project. Mitch and Mark show us how! White Knight’s Rust Guardians, Mitch and Mark, were on a mission to help Australians preserve and protect the metal in their homes, starting by helping Australian mum, Kylie, revitalise her family’s home through a series of simple small projects. In a few easy steps, White Knight Rust Guard can effectively restore, maintain, protect and decorate metal surfaces.

homes, standing proudly though the harshest of weather conditions. However, over time, this can cause them to become eroded and damaged, leaving them looking a little worse for wear. Using White Knight Rust Guard, this Aussie icon can be rejuvenated and back to hoisting and hanging again in no time.

The last few years have been challenging for Kylie who has been attempting to renovate her family home. Unfortunately, her husband’s cancer diagnosis has seen him in and out of hospital, leaving the family feeling like he has missed out on a big part of the experience and making it difficult to upkeep several maintenance projects around the house. White Knight’s Rust Guardians, Mitch and Mark, stepped in to help with some maintenance projects.

The Hills Hoist The hills hoist is a staple in so many Australian

Next, priming can be accomplished in three quick steps using Rust Guard True Bite Primer for the hoist and the tables and SLS Etch Primer for the railing. After stirring, simply brush the primer over the metal surface and wait a few hours to dry before it’s ready

to paint.

When left outside in the elements, outdoor furniture is often quick to rust and weather. By using Rust Guard, Mitch and Mark were able to not only restore and protect these metal tables but also decorate them with a pop of colour to create a new modern look. Completing these projects is an easy four-step process: clean, treat, prime and topcoat! Mitch and Mark first cleaned and prepared the metal by using sandpaper and bristled brushes before treating the surface with Rust Guard Solvent to clean and degrease. This will ensure the paint properly

Finally, using Rust Guard Quick Dry Advanced Enamel as the topcoat, Mitch and Mark beautified the metal structures. Rust Guard Quick Dry Advanced Enamel is available in a wide range of stylish colours and shades, prioritising aesthetics as well as long-lasting protection, with an 8-year guarantee on the advanced enamel. This topcoat is also quick drying: getting the coats done quicker and more importantly, the job done quicker.

“SHINE IS NAMED AFTER A BEAUTIFUL, NATIVE HAWAIIAN GIRL IN HER YELLOW DRESS WHO PERSONIFIED LOVE, JOY AND FAMILY.”

COLOURS FROM HAWAII

Life’s most precious moments can indeed happen anytime, anywhere. Words by Kyle by Design (KBD). I am inspired by nature, the sky and the sea. Nature is the ultimate colour designer as the the tones you will discover when you truly observe are always perfect in tone, balance and proportion. When I listen to music, I see colour and it’s become one of my favourite ways to be inspired to design colour schemes. This KBD Constellation story was inspired by my time in Hawaii. The sky, the culture, the nature and family could provide endless inspiration and many future colour schemes. Designing “Constellation”, I am inspired by the Jack Johnson’s song “Constellations” which was written while he was surfing in California. In this song, Jack’s lyrics speak to a time when Jack’s father taught him about his knowledge of the sky and all its constellations. From what I gather, this song is about looking to the sky to remind us that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves and that we might not ever fully grasp.

16

My KBD designed colour Shine is named after a beautiful Native Hawaiian girl in her yellow dress who personified love, joy and family. Her mother is one of the most amazing Hawaiian dancers I have ever seen. My inspiration through the wallpaper collections at Urban Road and in collaboration with the Coloursmith app, I wanted to create a 3C colour scheme which creates a nurturing space to always feel the comfort and love of family. A place to return to after a long day and drift off into a calming surrounding. A place to relax, restore and reconnect. Constellation’s colour was derived through the Coloursmith app from the ocean at Magenta Beach on the Central Coast. It has a perfect balance of blue and green at its base which changes throughout the light of day or moonlight by night. Balancing Constellation with Cloud (neutral) and a touch of Shine (yellow), this room is a relaxing haven in a busy world.

COLOURS INSPIRED BY GRANDMOTHER ’S TREE

Nature offers the best colour palettes, and it’s simply amazing how nature’s colours can have a positive impact on us. Words by Kyle by Design (KBD). Grandmillenia is a dusty pink, inspired and extracted from the Grandmother Tree in Kariong, NSW. These colours tap into her ancient old wisdom and healing energy of the Grandmother. This gigantic Angophora is a towering and majestic tree which is considered sacred and holds great significance in Aboriginal culture. There is something truly sacred about this space that connects me to my Grandmother. As a child, my Grandmother provided me with a life lived in pure love. When she gave me her time and I was in her company, her focus was solely on me. She taught me how to cook, create and connect with people through her energy and love. When I visit the Grandmother Tree on the Central Coast of NSW, I connect to her loving energy through the natural landscape of this spiritual site.

18

Using the Coloursmith app, I am able to bring nature’s colours into this nurturing room. Grandmillenia, Kariong and Lizzy in this colour palette, there is sybiosis through the connection of a person and nature. Granmillenia is a heart-centred colour of the wisdom and love of the Grandmother. These colours create a contemporary influence on her classic feminine style. The bedroom interior includes original artwork “Grandmother” by Contemporary Indigenous artist Lizzy Stageman which by no coincidence compliments this colour. The Grandmother brings a source of wisdom, a safe harbour and acts as our confidant. This soft, calming room emulates this feminine space with layered colours that bring love and protection into a complex and challenging modern life.

INSPIRING MENTORSHIP THROUGH COLOUR

“MINOR ALTERATIONS TO ENCLOSE A ROOM OR REMOVE A WALL CAN CHANGE THE FORM AND FUNCTION OF A SPACE.”

Not only do colours evoke emotions in us but they also have an impact on our mood and overall health and wellness. Words by Kyle by Design (KBD). I have been a designer and renovator of old houses that have lost their sparkle for most of my adult life. I have also worked professionally as a counsellor for The Raise Foundation for over 8 years, running high school mentoring programs. ln recent years, through my own journey of selfdiscovery, I realised that I am, at my true essence, an artist. This comes through my ability to create colour stories. One of my greatest pleasures in life is to take an old home and give it a new life when it has been forgotten or designed for a time which no longer suits our contemporary lifestyles. Often, just minor alterations to enclose a room or remove a wall can change the form and function of a space and give it a new life, which makes it relevant to our modern lifestyles. Older Australian homes are often built to a standard too difficult or too costly to replicate.

My colours have been created through the use of the Coloursmith app, taking inspiration from the natural landscape of the Munmorah National Park Lookout on the Central Coast of NSW. This is truly one of my most special places in the world. It has given me an understanding of self and has encouraged my own personal growth through the experience of being here. This is sacred Awabakal Country and I acknowledge the Awabakal people as the first peoples of this nation and respectfully acknowledge the Awabakal peoples of the land on which these colours have been inspired. It is my hope, in addition to this acknowledgement, that these colours inspire communities and individuals to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people of Australia by becoming a mentor through The Raise Foundation at www.raise.org.au.

Inspired by my work at The Raise Foundation, I have created a 3C palette which are called Raise, Mentor and Pure.

THE MUSIC AND COLOURS OF LAURA FRANK

“THE COLOURSMITH APP BY TAUBMANS ALLOWS ANYONE TO CHOOSE AND CREATE THEIR OWN PERSONALISED PAINT COLOURS AND COLOUR PALETTES FOR ALL PROJECTS BIG, AND SMALL.”

W A L K A L L D AY

Creativity comes in many different forms, and expressing ourselves through music, colour, design or any endeavour we are passionate about can be one of the most satisfying and fulfilling areas of life. Laura Frank’s story of music, design and colour shows creativity and passion in action. Country singer, Homesteader and DIY’er Laura Frank always dreamed of owning her own home. Growing up in the country, this dream was a challenge to attain as a freelance artist, so she made the decision to do it herself. Whilst watching a TV program on Netflix, the idea to build her own tiny house became a reality. The project quickly snowballed as she began to realise this home would not be big enough to house all her animals and music equipment. Five months later she was staring a 100 square metre home. The home cost $70,000 excluding land, and was built with as much recyclable, repurposed and free materials as they could source.

22

The alternative country singer’s new single ‘Simple Girl’ was written whilst her eco-friendly home was being built. The song depicts the laid-back lifestyle that Laura and her partner Nick have chosen for themselves. Whilst creating the album art, choosing Taubmans colours and paint was a “no-brainer”. The Coloursmith app by Taubmans allows anyone to choose and create their own paint colours for all projects big and small. The idea of designing colours with personal meanings behind them was an easy choice for Laura and Nick, as they loved the contrast and vibe each colour brought to the set. Instead of picking pre-existing colours from a store or a website this app stood out amongst others to help achieve the way they wanted each colour to have a “voice of its own”.

You can listen to Laura’s single ‘Simple Girl’ via the QR Code below.

TAUBMANS FOOTY CLUB RESCUE

We are proud to make a difference to Aussie communities by painting local club houses across Australia.

In the last edition, we met Darren from the Calamvale Leopards. We helped his club shine even brighter with a fresh coat of paint and a mural that the entire Calamvale community could be proud of.

Pulling off three projects over three months was a huge effort by all and one that the whole Taubmans team can be proud of.

Darwin

24

After seeing how much of a difference we made to the local community, we hit the road to be In It Together with local football clubs around the country.

When the Parramatta Eels headed to Darwin to play a home match, we packed up our tools and joined them with a visit to the Litchfield Bears Rugby League Club.

As part of our partnerships with the Parramatta Eels and Brisbane Lions, we found some local clubs in need of a bit of a love.

The Litchfield Bears are an integral part of the community and over two days, we gave the entire exterior of the club a repaint.

Taubmans Brand Manager Avin Jandu says, “Making these projects even more special was

This was a huge collaboration with over 20 of the Eels staff joining us on day two to help complete the

project. Once the painting was done, it was over to the Eels players who put on a memorable coaching clinic for over 200 kids. Despite the torrential rain, the kids had a ball and will be talking about this for years to come.

Kenmore From one bear to another. This time in a different state and with a different footy code. We headed to the heartland of Brisbane to visit the Kenmore Bears. In this project, we created an entire new visual identity for the club. Using Coloursmith, we created bespoke club colours that were used across the interior and exterior of the club. Our giant mural of their Kenmore Bear is impossible to miss as you drive down the hill into the carpark of the club.

Kenmore Bears club president Rod Lake says, “No words can describe the heartfelt thanks for our members and players. We are a strong club with great members but our lack of facilities is something that has hurt us for many years. We are now proud to have visiting clubs come to our facility and we have a spring in our step as we show them around. Then there is the Bear, what can we say about the Bear? It’s such a striking in-your-face statement that you are at Kenmore and we are the “Bears”.

received national broadcast coverage through TV and print.

We followed Junior on his journey back to the club and surprised him with an epic mural, helping to immortalise one of their greats.

Parramatta Eels captain Junior Paulo says, “It was a bit emotional thinking about all the memories rushing back from when I was a kid out on the field. It means a lot to give back to the club that means so much to me.”

We made quite the impression not just on the Cabramatta community but the media, as we

We captured each of these journeys to show that we are In It Together with the community.

TAUBMANS - THE SECRET OF TRADE PAINTERS

Whether you’re working on a big or small project, choosing the right products for the job is the key for lasting and beautiful results. Who would have thought of the terrible winter and spring we had across Australia in 2022? It seemed to never stop raining, flooding and generally causing terrible conditions not just for a great Aussie lifestyle but for our great Aussie houses. July had slightly higher on-average temperatures but had 2.5% above-average rainfall across Australia as a whole that has been causing problems, although most of this was in Queensland and NSW’s coastal areas. Queensland, however, had the highest rain on record since 1990. What does this mean for painting though? It doesn’t mean your paint goes further as the rain dilutes it. It means that exterior paint washes away with the rain. So, many of us were left with our “much-more-pleasant-weatherwise” inside jobs to do. You can worry about outside later.

28

Rain means moisture, and can quickly cause mould. Black mould forms not only in bathrooms and wet areas but everywhere: bedrooms, kitchens, lounge rooms and even the inside of your exterior walls as the moisture carries around the home. Choosing a paint that clearly states on the front of pack that it protects, blocks or stops mould and mildew is a must now. In particular, problem areas where water stains or mould keep coming back, a good stain blocker should be applied first followed by a couple of top coats. This will help keep back any problem areas and will help to protect the finish during 2023’s rain.

“CHOOSING A PAINT THAT PROTECTS, BLOCKS OR STOPS MOULD AND MILDEW IS A MUST.” For your top coat, depending on the budget and house, Taubmans EASYCOAT is a great choice with it’s Microban technology and mould, mildew and fungi protection. EASYCOAT is also low VOC and it’s approved by Sensitive Choice for asthma and allergy sufferers so even better for families and kids. It’s a great all-rounder.

Another option is Taubmans Endure. It costs a bit more but it’s worth every penny. It protects homes against mould and mildew but with its Advanced Nanoguard Technology, it allows you to scrub away and clean every day marks like dirt and sticky finger marks. Endure is also approved by Sensitive Choice and unlike other paints, it has a lifetime guarantee against blistering, peeling and flaking.

For repaint, wash down any walls with sugarsoap or bleach. Then use a good prep like Taubmans 3 in 1 Prep once it’s dry. This will work a treat. However, if the mould is there already, and it’s particularly bad, the new Taubmans Advanced Adhesion and Mould Blocker is perfect for the job. It works in high humidity areas and blocks mould stains and future growth. It’s also water based, you can do the job and paint over fast.

60% MAIN COLOUR

3C GUIDE: THE 60-30-10 RULE OF COLOUR SCHEMES When creating that perfect colour scheme for a room, how and where you use the colours selected is key. Here are some tips to help you come up with the perfect colour scheme for your space.

Have you ever walked into a space and felt immediately at ease or into a showroom and thought wow I love this look? It’s not as hard as it may appear to achieve a well-balanced space. Applying the principles of design are important, with colour playing a big part in the end result. Colour can awaken the senses, evoke excitement or even calm the mind. Knowing how to use colour to create the type of mood you want in your space can be challenging, but using the 60-30-10 rule is a great place to start. The use of 3 colours are broken down into ratios of 60%, 30% and 10%. The 60% selection is the overall dominant colour in the space. The secondary 30% colour is used to provide contrast and supports the main colour while the 10% accent colour delivers interest and fun, as they meld together to create the perfect palette. Where to begin for interiors? Having a starting point or an object that you

30

wish to build a colour scheme around is a great place to begin. If you are building or renovating, create a colour scheme from your joinery or a tile, and if it’s a simple room refresh why not build a scheme around an object or piece of furniture. For example, a lounge room’s colour scheme can be created from the colour of the lounge itself. A colour wheel is designed to assist with creating colour schemes. A colour wheel can be a perfect way for beginners to work with opposite colours and create their own wonderful colour schemes. Another solution for creating colour schemes is to use the Coloursmith app and leverage the combinations function to create a colour palette that is guaranteed to please. You can heighten and lessen the intensity of your colours giving you the opportunity to create personalised colours and, when combined with the 3C principle, can help you create a beautiful outcome for your space.

BATHROOM COLOUR SCHEME Bathrooms are generally a wash of white to create a clean modern feel. Who said a bathroom needs to be white and on the cautious side? A bathroom is a place where you can really express yourself and what better way than with colour. White certainly optimises cleanliness however colour allows you to personalise your space and the most tranquil bathrooms use colour well. Greens certainly have a place in this zone, and muted tones still allow light to bounce around the room. Working with opposites on the colour wheel is a great place to start when deciding what colours to put together. Naturally, a dusty pink sings with a

LOUNGE COLOUR SCHEME Not sure where to start in this space? Why not look at the colour of your lounge and build your scheme around this. For example, a grey lounge gives you plenty of scope to work with and you can create a monochromatic colour scheme with ease. Whether you choose to saturate your space with darker hues for a comforting feel, or keep the space open opting for a lighter hue, grey is a very easy colour to work with and allows for an easy introduction of other colours.

HOW TO CHOOSE WHITES With countless whites available, the quest for finding the perfect white can be arduous. White is very much an on trend colour used to create the most amazing and inviting spaces. We share our top tips to ensure you fall in love with the white for your space.

Where to begin? Ask yourself what you want to achieve within your space, are you wanting to make a small space feel bigger, or create a space that allows for a seamless transition of cabinetry to walls, to ceilings and doors? If so, select a very softly tinted white and use the same colour on the ceiling, walls, doors and trims. This technique of placing one colour on all areas of the room offers a non-jarring approach and the eye merely travels around the room without a need to stop where a new colour begins. It creates the illusion of more space and is simply very easy to live with. Taubmans Crisp White, is a perfect white for achieving this look.

Make sure you use the appropriate products for each area you are painting, a ceiling paint, broad wall and of course a suitable water based enamel for your doors and trim. Why water based? It will stay true to colour and won’t yellow, essential when doing an entire white scheme. Other whites that are perfect for achieving this look are Miss Universe, Cotton Ball, and Cotton Sheets. TIP: Ensure you consider the amount of natural light the space receives when selecting your white.

How much light does the space receive? It’s important to consider the amount of light your space receives when beginning your journey with white. Cooler whites tend to work very well within a north facing room, yet warmer whites are far more palatable in a dim lit room or perhaps a south facing room. Dimly lit spaces need the added warmth in the undertone to create a space that is inviting, using cooler toned whites in this space can unfortunately make the space feel grey, adding to the gloom. Sample your whites first as the ultimate feeling of your space can be controlled by the colour that adorns the walls. Trial your colour via a sample pot – best money you will spend. We suggest you find a large piece large piece of cardboard and paint three coats of your pending white, once dry, move the cardboard around the room, viewing your colour in natural daylight, artificial lighting and in all areas of your home.

much your colour can transform itself when viewed here. When shopping the colourwall for whites, view your colour chip against a brilliant white colour chip or even a piece of white printer paper, or white card. Holding your white colour chip up against a white back drop makes it very easy to understand and identify the type of undertone that exists within the colour.
