Learn to Catch More Fish Ages: 13 and up

Join Ben Rahier, a retired tidal waters sport fishing guide for this exciting new course. The course’s curriculum will include, but not be limited to, describing different techniques and fishing strategies utilized for catching the variety of tidal water species found throughout the waters of British Columbia. This course will be broken up into three different 1.5 hr sessions.

Session #1 - Tidal fish other than salmon

will focus on fishing for species other than salmon in tidal waters. Fish including rockfish (including yellow eye), lingcod, halibut, flounder/ sole, pacific cod, kelp greenling, herring, surf perch and tuna. The goal of this session will be to give its participants a greater understanding of bottom fishing; techniques used, gear options, bait options as it relates to different species, habitat requirements for each species (where to find them), and current regulations and the reasoning behind them.

Session #2 - Tidal trap fishing for invertebrates

will focus on trap fishing for invertebrate tidal water species. Species like spot prawns, sidestripe/humpback shrimp, Dungeness/red rock/ box crabs, and Pacific Giant Octopus. The course will not only cover the fine details of these fisheries, but it will also provide a variety of tips and tricks that will help the average recreational angler haul in fuller traps.

Session #3 (1 of 2) - Salmon Fishing 1

will focus on tidal water salmon fishing techniques, gear types, rod/reel selection and application, bait types, locations, run timing, depths, how current plays a large role in picking a fishing spot, applicable regulations and the reasoning behind them, processing catch, general salmon biology, and more. This information will increase a fisher’s odds of being more successful when fishing for salmon in tidal waters. As there are just too many tricks of the trade to share in an hour and a half, the salmon fishing component will be broken into two sessions.

Session #4 (2 of 2) - Salmon Fishing 2

A continuation of Session #3. Please note you do not have to take Session #3 to enrol in Session #4. Session 1 Tues 6-7:30pm April 4 Session 2 Tues 6-7:30pm April 11 Session 3 Tues 6-7:30pm April 18 Session 4 Tues 6-7:30pm April 25 Fee: $20 per session/$70 for all 4 sessions Room: Elm Room
