Director’s Message Thank you to everyone who attended focus groups and public meetings over the past year to share your ideas and thoughts about Parks, Recreation and Cultural services throughout the Powell River region.

Ray Boogaards Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture rboogaards@cdpr.bc.ca 604-485-8907

During this year our study team spoke to almost all of the elected officials representing the Tla’amin Nation, Powell River Regional District and City of Powell River. Additionally, as part of the Expanded Regional Recreation Initiative Study, we hosted more than 55 focus group meetings and public meetings, involving local taxpayers, user groups, arts, culture and heritage groups, as well as sport groups, all in an effort to obtain your opinions about the importance of regional recreation. We conducted a public survey using portable data entry kiosks that were moved throughout the region between February 12 and March 15, 2016. The survey was also online and paper copies were available. A total of 2,600 surveys were filled out, which was deemed a great success.

Mayor’s Message Once again I am pleased to offer up a few words of encouragement about the value of staying physically active in order to foster and maintain good health. Exercise can be enjoyable and rewarding; it does not have to be a chore. I am confident that you will discover that there is some manner of exercise that holds appeal for you. And, if all else fails, simply go for a walk around the block.

Mayor Dave Formosa

Active Living Guide Fall 2016

When you realize how good you feel both physically and mentally after some form of activity, motivation to establish some form of exercise in your daily routine will surely follow. I know from personal experience that everyday stresses can be managed better after some form of activity. It truly does make a positive difference. It just takes a little effort to make the

We hope to share the results of the study with the Powell River region by the fall of this year. Watch for it, and again, thank you for assisting the study team with getting the data that we needed to complete this study. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture wants to ensure that residents living in this region have limitless opportunities to use recreation facilities and programs to maintain and improve their health. Take time to review the Fall Active Living Guide. There are activities for every member of the family, from public skating and swimming, to fitness and cooking classes. If there is a recreational activity that you would like this department to consider offering, or if you feel you would like to instruct a recreation program, I encourage everyone to contact one of our four recreation coordinators with your ideas. Most of all, stay active and stay healthy.

Ray Boogaards Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture

right choice for your health and the perseverance and discipline to stick with it. In short, get out there and do something, for even 15 minutes a day to start, either alone or with friends or family. You will gain so much more than you realize and set an example for others. As our children learn from us, let’s take our lifestyle choices seriously. Our future starts now, so let us be conscious of the lifestyle decisions we make. As the reward of healthy living brings the freedom to do the things we always wanted to do without being hindered by health factors, let us share a commitment to get active together! God Bless all of you!

Dave Formosa Mayor of Powell River 3

Pickleball

Pickleball has been around since 1965. It started as a casual adaptation of badminton (whiffleball, not shuttlecock), and grew into a hugely popular sport. In fact, it is one of Powell River’s most well-attended public programs. The International Federation of Pickleball now lists seven member countries, including Canada, India and Spain. Not bad for a sport named after a dog (“Pickles.”)

Karate ... a great investment More than ever in today’s world, your child needs positive values and self-discipline to succeed. Our unique programs will teach your child a series of physical skills which will quickly translate into a feeling of confidence and high self-esteem. This, in turn, will promote self-discipline and concentration which often pays off at school in the form of higher grades. Add to all of this a positive attitude, acceptance of responsibility, and leadership skills, and you can see why so many parents feel that martial arts lessons are the best investment that they have ever made for their child. So, ask yourself this - if you could create the perfect activity for your children, what sort of things would they learn while doing it? • What if they learn how to become more disciplined? (Maybe their school work would improve as a result?) • What if they learnt to be more self-confident? (Wouldn’t you feel better knowing your child could deal with pressure from their friends?) • What if they learn to have genuine respect for others, like parents and teachers? (Imagine that!) • What if they learn how to set goals and overcome obstacles to achieve them? (What if you had learned how to set and achieve goals when you were eight?)
