Black is the new white in kitchens

Dramatic, and bold yet neutral JURA KONCIUS THE WASHINGTON POST Kitchens are going over to the dark side. Black is replacing white or grey as the go-to choice for trophy kitchens across the country. “Kitchen noir” is also trending on social media sites such as Pinterest and in the portfolios of high-end kitchen designers, where trends often are hatched. Customers are looking for something their neighbours don’t have yet, designers say. Black kitchens appeal to both men and women. Black custom cabinets are growing in popularity, as are black counters, islands, flooring and wall colours. Designers say that black is moody and romantic and brings drama to the room in the house where everyone likes to hang out.

“My clients are saying they want something different,” says Maria Stapperfenne, a kitchen designer in New Jersey who is president-elect of the National Kitchen & Bath Association. “They want something dramatic and bold. And they don’t want what their mother had.” “There’s a lot of interest right now in intense, deep tones for kitchens,” says Paul Lobkovich, co-owner of Lobkovich Kitchen Designs in Tysons Corner, Va. “Black is a new neutral. We’re doing a couple of kitchens now that are sort of a grey/brown/black or black with a little eggplant mixed in.” The 2014 National Kitchen & Bath Style Re por t asked members whether t h e y h a d u s e d a bl a ck colour scheme in at least one kitchen they designed in the past year. Of the respondents to that question, one-third said they did; five years ago it was only 12 per cent.

At GE Appliances, designers are working on new finishes for appliances that would blend with the darker finishes that are becoming popular for kitchen cabinets, countertops and floors. “Over the past year, we started hearing about black kitchens from high-end designers all over the country,” says Lou Lenzi, GE Appliances director of industrial design. Although GE has offered a black onyx finish for more than 35 years on stoves, dishwashers and refrigerators, the company is working on something new, probably to debut next year. “It’s going to be a much more sophisticated colour in terms of its gloss level and materials,” says Lenzi, who described it as a brushed, textured graphite with a low-gloss finish.

Although small black appliances blend in with black counters and cabinets, they also work with other finishes. “Black works well with brushed aluminum stoves, microwaves and refrigerators that are often featured in new highrise apartments or renovated spaces,” Carrie Crespo-Dixon, director of public relations at Williams-Sonoma, wrote in an email. “Black accents are easy ways people can make a statement without fully committing to one colour in their decor.”

Two more “contractors” are going to jail, this time convicted of charges under Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act. Their crimes? Not following through on kitchen and bathroom renovations — by far the two most popular renovation projects homeowners undertake. I’ve been saying it for years: We must have clear consequences for people who take people’s money, disappear — sometimes after destroying a home — only to move onto their next victim. When bad guys get caught and are penalized for it, the entire industry benefits. And stories like the one about these convictions give me hope. They tell us we’re on the right track. There are other signs, too. Growing up I didn’t have things like Skills Canada and WorldSkills, national and global competitions that recognize the trades for what they are — cool, something worth investing in, to be proud of and that you can turn into a great career. Canada’s tradespeople rank among its best natural resources. Being a contractor, carpenter, mechanic, plumber or electrician means something different than it did when I was growing up. These days, you’re likely to get a date if you are in any one of these professions. That wasn’t always the case in my day. The word is getting out that these are great careers attached to great paycheques. And that’s attracting some of the best students this country has ever seen — people who care about doing a good job and who are proud to do it. Take Our Kids to Work Day (held this year on Nov. 5) is another great opportunity that’s helping to improve the trades and educate another generation about them. The first time my son, Mike Jr. worked on a job site was on Take Our Kids to Work Day. Now he’s in his second year of carpentry earning his Red Seal, and he’s an experienced site supervisor who led the build on my garage. If I hadn’t taught my kids the trades were legitimate and respectable ways to earn a living and support a family, I don’t think they would have gone into them. So as

But what else is changing? The homeowner. T h e ave r a g e h o m e ow n e r ’s knowledge is growing. More people know what a good home-related job is supposed to look like, what a pro sounds like and how to avoid the bad guys. Do we need more homeowner education? Absolutely. But we’re in much better shape than we were

10, 20 years ago. A lot of that has to do with women getting more involved in decisions that affect a home — from construction and

functioning home. More information also means making better decisions, and that’s why an increasing number of homeowners are interested in energy efficiency, sustainable construction, greywater reuse, solar power, and green products and materials. You never used to hear homeowners ask about the R-value of insulation, if the windows are argon- or krypton-gas filled, if there’s underlayment on the roof, or whether a home has lo-flow fixtures, high indoor-air quality or better mould, moisture and fire resistance. I’m hearing more people ask the right questions. That tells you something about the market — it’s smarter. More people care about living in a healthy home and the impact on the environment. It’s not just about fancy finishes anymore. It’s about making it right, for you, your family and your future.

I’m always amused when I hear tales from financial advisers about recently landed clients with unrealistic expectations about what financial planning can do for them. Let’s face it, if you’re 63 years old, have no employer pension plan and have saved nothing or are still in debt, there’s no magic wand an adviser can wave to permit you to retire in luxury at 65. You’ll qualify for old age security (OAS) and, depending on your employment track record, the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). If the latter is spotty, then you may also get the guaranteed income supplement (GIS) to the OAS, and that’s about it. Financial institutions have conducted several studies that find one of the biggest regrets of older folk is not having begun to save earlier in life. Looked at from the perspective of the time value of money and the power of compounding, the best time to start saving is the moment you enter the full-time permanent workforce. I urge any young person who has reached the age of 18 to get started saving and investing in a tax-free savings account (TFSA), even if they have to tap the Bank of Mom and Dad to get started. The BOMAD could bribe the kids by promising to match any contributions. For example, if Junior can come up with $2,750 from some combination of summer and part-time jobs, then the BOMAD could add another $2,750, thereby maxing out the annual $5,500 TFSA contribution permitted. Do that for 30 or 40 years and you won’t have to worry about having enough money to retire. Of course, if the kids are bent on higher education long before they grow up, the BOMAD should be contributing at least $2,500 a year to a registered education sav-

ings plan (RESP), which offers a guaranteed 23 per cent return with no risk or fees, observes Chris Cottier, a Vancouver-based investment adviser with Richardson GMP. When did I start to save? Well, blush, of course they didn’t have the TFSA when I was a young investor. The truth is I hadn’t saved a penny till I was 31 and only started my registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) when I commuted the value of a defined benefit pension plan I had been in for four years. So technically, via the forced savings of a company pension plan, I could claim to have been saving on a regular basis since I was 27. This did not turn out to be too late to have begun saving, though like survey participants, I wish I’d begun five years earlier. But my relatively late start was no disaster and indeed many financial experts, such as retired actuary Malcolm Hamilton, have suggested there’s no real need to worry about investing in the stock market if you still have debts to pay off. Cottier is in the same camp with respect to TFSAs, particularly the variety that hold only investments that generate minuscule amounts of interest income. Better to pay off high-interest credit-card debt first, Cottier points out, since few investments can match the return of wiping out 18 per cent creditcard debt. That’s 18 per cent after tax, the equivalent of a pre-tax return of 29 per cent, he says. Where it gets tricky is mortgage debt. With the sky-high prices of homes in Canadian cities such as Vancouver or Toronto, I can sympathize with young people trying to get their first step on the housing ladder. But I still think a TFSA is a good thing to begin at age 18. Use it first to come up with a down payment on a home. Once that’s done, you could put new contributions on hold until you paid down a good chunk of the mortgage. If you have an employer pen-

And of course, if you’re employed, you’d also be contributing automatically to CPP. What about RRSPs? If you have a good workplace pension, you won’t have much RRSP room anyway. If you’re married and your spouse works and both of you are in the top tax bracket, you should be able to afford to maximize an-

nual RRSP contributions. If you’re living on a single smaller income, you can dispense with both the RRSP and TFSA until all credit-card debt is eliminated and possibly the mortgage is well on the way to being paid off. To return to the question posed at the outset, you should aim to have all debts, including mortgage, paid off by your mid-40s. By then, you’ll have been used to making large mortgage payments; once they’re gone you can divert a simi-

lar amount of money into maxing out your RRSP and TFSA contributions and perhaps add a bit to non-registered savings. With a 20-year run to age 65 or 67 (remember, for younger folk, OAS won’t start until 67), you’ll still have plenty of time to “get serious” about saving.
