From old barns to modern homes Reclaimed wood adds dash of ‘soul’ JODIE SINNEMA POSTMEDIA NEWS

NOVEMBER 2014

When Michael Ger rand walks into an old, leaning, wind-beaten barn from the 1920s or ’30s, he often heads to the horse stalls first. Most people see only manure. Gerrand has an eye for the floor beneath: Douglas fir from an old-growth forest that has been spalted or discoloured from horse urine over decades. Once Gerrand and his team have pressure-washed the salvaged timbers, then put them through a planer, a red wood emerges, perfect for beautiful modern tabletops. Gerrand and his wife, Michelle Spencer, launched Salvage Solutions (salvagesolutions.ca) in 2012, a business that reclaims and salvages antique woods from dilapidated barns and buildings in rural Alberta. T he couple sells that wood in bulk for hardwood floors or feature walls. They and a carpenter also design and sell mantels, headboards, tables and sliding barn doors that can be used in modern homes to offset glass and metal. “It adds a soul to a house,” Gerrand said of the antique wood additions. “All I see from my drive up from Pincher Creek to Edmonton is thousands of soulless houses and I think that there’s a market to putting a little bit of soul into some of these places and a little bit of history. I think people want it.” Buyers can even purchase entire sheds from Salvage Solutions that could become the perfect artist studio in the backyard, for instance. Gerrand and Spencer’s

A feature wall made from salvaged barn wood adds depth to this living area. own house south of Edmonton includes a hodgepodge of such used items: Their floor is from a high school gymnasium, the counter in the laundry room is made from the slabs of an old bowling alley and the kitchen counters are made from prisoner benches, complete with graffiti, from a demolished medium-security jail. But while Gerrand loves the charm and “soul” such historical pieces bring into a modern home, his first love is for rural Alberta and saving its physical history. Each time a farmer calls Gerrand to demolish a barn or shed, he first attempts to convince the farmer to save the old building and replace the rotting pieces with fir salvaged from other properties. “I’m a sentimental fool

and I think that our landscape should be dotted with our historic agricultural buildings,” he said. Gerrand has deconstructed about 30 buildings in disrepair, dismantling the roof first, then moving down by using a hand bar to manually and carefully take out every nail to save the wood. Every nail hole, every crack and burn from the sun adds to the character of the salvaged wood, he said. “This is better wood than you can buy,” Gerrand remembers learning from his father when he was 12 and growing up on a Manitoba farm. Back then, he and his father would take apart old granaries and use the wood to make new ones.

a piece of our history’

CONTINUED FROM F1 “He would always tell me, ‘you can’t get this type of wood in the store anymore.’” Old-growth forests have huge trees that grew slowly, undisturbed for more than a century. They produce tight-grained clear wood that has few knots from branches. “It’s extremely stable because it’s been drying in the sun and the wind for anywhere to 60 to 80 years,” Gerrand said. “Stable, meaning it’s a woodworker’s dream in that it’s not going to twist or dry and shrink. It’s already done all that and beautiful to work with ... The patina on a lot of the wood is amazing just because it’s been sculpted by the sun and the wind.” Wood saved from the south side of a building is often baked and sunburned brown. Wood from the west side tends to be grey from the sun and wind. Northside wood is darker and sometimes has lichen or moss on it, Gerrand said. “People can touch it, feel it and recognize they’re dealing with a

MAKE IT RIGHT

HOME DECOR

Weathering winter without woe

Dhurrie rugs resurrected from 1980s heyday JURA KONCIUS THE WASHINGTON POST

MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

Winter weather can wreak havoc on your home. But even when winter does its worst, feel confident that with the proper maintenance you can make it right. Here are some of the biggest problems I see and a few things you can do about them.

Roof — ice damming

Typically the two causes of ice damming are clogged eavestroughs and insufficient attic insulation. The attic should be properly sealed, ventilated and insulated with a minimum of 30.5 to 38 centimetres (12 to 15 inches) of blown-in insulation. Otherwise heat will escape, melting the snow on the roof. When it refreezes, ice damming occurs. And if you didn’t clean your gutters or eavestroughs before winter, backed-up water and debris will eventually freeze and prevent water from draining. This water will then freeze and ice damming will spread all along your roof line. Ice dams can cause water to back up under shingles and enter the roof structure, leading to rot and mould. They can also warp and damage your eavestroughs — remember, water expands when it freezes — potentially causing them to detach from your roof. If your house has ice dams, call a professional roofer. If the cause is clogged eavestroughs, he might recommend using a non-corrosive de-icer like a calcium chloride flake,

ALEX SCHULDTZ/The Holmes Group

Ice damming can damage eavestroughs and cause water to back up underneath shingles, possibly leading to mould and structural damage. which looks like snow. It’s sprinkled over frozen areas and once everything is melted the gutters can be cleared and cleaned.

Foundation — basement leaks

Water should always be directed away from the home, especially around the foundation. Grading, roofs and a system of eavestroughs and downspouts all work together to do one thing — drive water away from your house. During winter, shovel snow away from the foundation, otherwise, when it melts, you know where it will end up.

Brick exteriors — flaking and spalling

Typically, there is about 15 to 20 cm (six to eight in.) of foundation or concrete above ground on your exterior walls below the brick line. Clearing snow away from the bricks around your home allows them to breathe and helps to pre-

vent flaking and spalling. The same goes for a wood porch or wood columns. Clearing away snow will help prolong the life of the wood.

Plumbing — frozen pipes

Shut down exterior lines and/or hose bibs for the winter. Most homes have one in the garage and one in the backyard.

HVAC — snow-covered exhaust lines and venting

Newer furnaces have an exhaust line and a fresh-air intake, both made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, which is white. Older homes just have an exhaust line, usually made of black acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) pipe. Lines on the side of your house — typically near the location of the furnace — should be visible. Clear away snow or it will potentially choke the system. Older furnaces will exhaust through the roof; newer furnaces exhaust directly

out the side of the home. Newer homes might also have a power-vented water heater or hot water tank (as opposed to “gravity-fed”). That means there is an exhaust motor fan on top of the heater or tank that turns on when the system kicks in. Its exhaust line should be kept free of snow too.

Unsafe electrical — plug in safely

Make sure you plug electronics and appliances into a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) safety outlet. We use more electricity over winter, but avoid overloading circuits. Homes should be protected with a 15-amp circuit, which delivers 1,800 watts of available safe power. Also, inspect power bars and extension cords. If they’re frayed or slightly damaged, throw them out and get new ones. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. For more information visit makeitright.ca.

In the 1980s, dhurrie rugs from India, with their bright colours, geometric designs and sturdy flat weaves, were all the rage. In 1983, one of the first things my husband and I selected for our new apartment in Washington was a $499 red-and-white, nine-by-12-foot dhurrie rug from the Kellogg Collection. I wish I still owned it. Dhurries sort of disappeared in the 1990s (I gave mine away), but they’re back. Today, af fordably priced dhurries are showing up at retailers, including West Elm and Anthropologie, bringing this versatile, reversible floor covering to a new generation. “Dhurries are wonderful rugs and look beautiful in many settings,” says Pam Green, owner of the home decor store Kellogg Collection, which recently brought dhurries back. Dhur ries, which have

been woven for hundreds of years, are the reason Green opened her original Kellogg store in 1982. She had seen dhurries featured in design magazines such as House Beautiful and she found the look both fresh and classic. Yet she couldn’t find one for sale in the U.S. capital, so she travelled to India and started importing them herself. Eventually the market became flooded and she discontinued them. But Green says the simpler prints and stripes of today’s dhurries have a more casual look that resonates with today’s lifestyles. Vinta g e dhur ries are showing up on Etsy and eBay and at auction. Online purveyors of luxury goods such as 1stdibs have found an increased interest in fine antique and vintage dhurries. Designer Anna Matthews believes dhurries are a great way to add colour and vibrancy to a home. “I like them layered over a sisal rug,” Matthews says.

The Shapes dhurrie designed by Alyson Fox in collaboration with Hawkins New York is from Dwell Store.

HOME LIGHTING

PAT T E R N P L A N N I N G

Lusting for a new lamp?

Be wallpaper wise

JEFFREY FISHER POSTMEDIA NEWS

Q

I have lamp envy. Last weekend my husband and I stayed at our friend’s home in Boston for the first time. My girlfriend mentioned they used an interior designer to help with the decor, but I wasn’t prepared for just how beautiful their home is. One thing that stood out to me was her gorgeous lamps. I came home wanting to throw out every mediocre lamp I own. Oh, and that’s another thing I realized: I don’t actually have enough lamps. Help! I absolutely love purchasing lamps for clients or myself. They’re the finishing touch to an interior and I labour over choosing the correct lamp just like I do drapery fabrics or a new sofa. Too often by the time it gets to the lamppicking phase of a project, people are frustrated and tired of making decisions, so they settle. It sounds like your friend didn’t settle and the results are apparent. I’m forever recommending to clients or friends to add a lamp here or there. Ambient lighting can take an interior to the next level. Take a walk through your house and look for ar-

A

Garvey

eas into which you previously hadn’t thought of placing a table (or floor) lamp. I’m not suggesting you make your h o u s e look like a lighting store, but look at it through the eyes Lamont of your friend’s interior designer. A common mistake people make is thinking lamps have to be purchased in pairs. They don’t. Sometimes a lamp is so spectacular and detailed that placing two of them actually diminishes their visual value. Pictured here, the Metamorphosis and Garvey are two such lamps. Placed singularly on an entrance console or on a side table in a den, either of these lamps l o o k l i ke a work of art — while providing light. If you like shopping vintage and antique stores, single lamps don’ t typically sell as well as pairs do, so it’s often reflected in the pricing. I’m old school when it comes to bedroom lamps. Though I sometimes choose dif ferent nightstands, I like the continuity of matching lamps for a master bedroom. The lamp needs to be tall enough to cast proper light when I’m reading in bed. No squatty lamps for me. The Lamont lamp here and a Sidney lamp at 76 and 86.4 centimetres (30 and 34 inches)

respectively, are two of my favourite taller lamps. The base of the Lamont lamp features intersecting planes of polished crystal with brass fittings. Perfect in a modern setting or juxtaposing a more traditional interior, I’ve used a pair of these lamps on a dining buffet, but they would look equally beautiful in a bedroom. The Sidney lamp is great for a smaller nightstand or table because even though it’s tall, the shade is only 38 cm (15 in.) in diameter. The sleek base is made of snow marble and has my favourite feature on a lamp — double pull chains. Do you recall your friend’s lampshades? They may be another reason you loved her lamps and hate yours. Look at your shades to see if they’re dated or dowdy by comparison. If the majority of your shades are pleated or bell shaped, chances are they need updating. Of course there are exceptions. Sometimes a lamp comes to life with an atypical shade, shape or colour. The Courtship lamp, with a tapered square shade, looks cl a s s i c a l ly e l egant and works equally well as a single lamp on a table at your living room window or as a pair on your dining room buffet. Drum shades (where the top and bottom are essentially the same diameter) are extremely popular and can update practically any lamp base. For added drama, try a black shade like the one pictured here on the Metamorphosis. And don’t forget about finials. If you don’t like the one that comes with your lamp or want to infuse a bit more decorative personality, switch it out. Decorative finials are sold separately at many lamp stores or online — and though they’re a fine detail, you’ll be surprised at how an interesting finial can change the look of a lamp. The lamps pictured here are top-selling lamps in Canada from two of my favourite suppliers — Arteriors (arteriorshome.com) and

Courtship Currey Company (curreycodealers.com). Take a look online to find a dealer near you. Good luck. Send your decor question to askjeffreyfisher@gmail.com.

LISA EVANS POSTMEDIA NEWS Gone are the days of enveloping a room in flowery paper resembling a field of wildflowers. Today’s wallpapers are bold and in large geometric patterns that draw attention to an accent wall. But with a range of patterns, colours and textiles available, choosing the right wallpaper isn’t always a breeze. Cindy Desjardins, an Ottawa interior decorator, offers her tips on choosing the right paper. What kind? There are lots of different types of wallpaper to consider. Vinyl is the most versatile and durable, offering the widest range of colours and patterns. It resists tearing and is easy to clean, making it a good choice for well-used areas such as a family room or child’s bedroom. Vinyl comes in self-sticking for an easy do-it-yourself project (simply peel off the backing and fix to the wall); pre-pasted, which requires wetting the paper before hanging; or non-pasted, which means applying paste to the back of the paper before hanging. More delicate papers include flocked, grasscloth and foil. Flocked wallpaper was originally designed to imitate velvet and textile wall coverings and has a luxurious look and feel. It’s more delicate than vinyl and is commonly used in a formal dining room or master bedroom. Grasscloth wallpaper is made of a natural fibre and is an environmentally friendly way to add warmth and character. Foil wallpaper is made of a thin sheet of metallic foil attached to a paper backing. It can create a dramatic look,

especially in a formal dining room where you want to add some sparkle, but can be extremely difficult to hang as the foil wrinkles and tears easily. ■ Cost: Wallpaper can be either budget-friendly or expensive, depending on the type of paper you choose. Vinyl papers start at $18 to $20 a roll, while specialty papers such as grasscloth, foiled and flocked paper start at $40 and up. ■ DIY or hired help? Although vinyl paper is easy to install and makes for an easy DIY project, Desjardins recommends hiring a professional to hang specialty papers such as grasscloth, foil and flocked paper. “If you’re going to put some expense into the paper, finish it off and get a professional to hang it for you,” she says. ■ Pattern overload: Survey key design elements already in a room and avoid using patterned paper where there already is a lot of pattern, such as behind a bed with an intricate duvet cover or a patterned headboard, as competing design elements will clash. If you’ve already got pattern in a room, opt instead for wallpaper with texture such as grasscloth or anaglypta (paper embossed with a pattern that resembles fine plasterwork) that can be painted any colour to match your room’s decor. ■ Create mood: Consider the atmosphere you want to create. Foil paper with a subtle pattern can add sparkle and fun to a dining room, while a flocked option offers a more formal, elegant atmosphere. ■ Get a sample: When you find a wallpaper you love, ask to take a sample home as the lighting in your home will differ from the lighting in the store. After all, wallpaper can be a chore to remove, so you want to make sure you’ve found one you will love for a long time.

TWAS…. 2 days before Christmas and all through the house……. The RE/MAX Realtors were stirring and so was the mouse. The documents were signed, the lawyers’ instructions had been sent, we were all thinking about heading home after another day well spent. I, too, could go home to my house full off love, take off my coat, my hat and my gloves. When what to my tired ears did I hear; the cell phone was ringing, a call from the RE/MAX office appeared. The Mortgage Broker on the line, “We are missing some paper work, The money won’t be sent, I thought we were through, The key turn over is tomorrow what do we do.” So grabbing, my coat my hat and my keys back to the office, I went Met with the staff, with file in hand, started make calls and reviewing a plan, Thought of the buyers who thought all was okay Who thought they were going to be at their new home, at noon the next day. The staff, the broker, the lender, the lawyer and I, put our heads together to give it a try. Retracing all our paperwork from the start to the close The lender looked things over again and found the cause A computer glitch, “technology…sigh” , he said with a pause”. So, at the end of it all and thanks all around, another problem solved, everything is well, we got in our cars and drove out of sight Merry Christmas, Happy New Year to all and to all a Good Night!
